disagree w/ the idea that this is a wildbow misogyny moment tbqh, altho i might be misremembering the way it's framed in-text? it's not supposed to be awful because it makes her objectively less attractive according to men/society/whatever, it's supposed to be awful because it's something that She would hate. it's something that disfigures her in Her eyes. just like her younger brother, she compensates for having been an unloved child who was only as wanted as she was useful by compulsively attempting to portray herself as someone powerful/special/desirable/scary/etc. alec does this by going for the Specialest Ever Prince aesthetic, and cherie values being a hot & scary mean girl. being a vasil meant her childhood was defined by the traumatic experience of constantly having her autonomy stripped away & identity subsumed into that of what her father wanted for the family. her ability to present herself as she chooses now that she's finally left the cult is very important to her. for her to have the way she chooses to present herself violated by being forced to get a tattoo that's the exact opposite of what she wants to appear as, something she finds disgusting, something that demeans and degrades her--that's utterly devastating for her. sure, they would be cool tattoo designs if someone consciously chose them, but that doesn't change that they're permanently marring cherie's identity & marking her with exactly how she doesn't want to be seen. it doesn't matter what her audience thinks--her self-expression was ultimately for her, and that part of her has been unalterably violated. mannequin couldn't possibly choose something more distressing for her.
