I’m on Thanksgiving Break and have nothing better to do with my waking hours than to categorize every single time Mr. Robot appears onscreen. This post only documents season 1!

1.01 

7:01--7:25 : Robot with hat and sunglasses talks to Elliot on the subway. He takes off hat then puts it back on. Blue flannel scarf.

23:51--23:54: Robot with hat and sunglasses begs for change outside of restaurant. Blue flannel scarf.

34:18--40:17: Robot shows up holding his hat on the subway. He puts on his hat when he leaves the train. He keeps hat on until they reach fsociety at 38:41 then he removes it. 39:51 is the first appearance of Robot with reading glasses, telling Elliot there’s not much he can do without a CPU. Blue flannel scarf and cardigan.

44:33--48:23: Robot enters with his hat and sunglasses (and snacks!). Once on ferris wheel, Robot no longer has a hat or sunglasses. Blue flannel scarf.

20:26--25:39: Robot is playing a shooting game without hat or sunglasses inside fsociety. Robot puts on sunglasses and takes them off talking about blowing up Steel Mountain.  Red flannel shirt.

42:24--46:27: Robot sitting on pier with hat and sunglasses, reading Resurrection by Leo Tolstoy (for the Tyrell conspiracy theorist in me, eyyyy). Robot takes off the sunglasses, talks about his father, then puts them on before shoving him off the pier. Different red flannel shirt. Gray and orange flannel scarf.

16:02--19:15: Robot shows up in Elliot’s office wearing reading glasses--no hat. Robot takes him to a bar, he’s still wearing the reading glasses--no hat. Blue scarf. Can’t tell color of his shirt, looks orange.

43:34--44:07: Robot reading Resurrection with reading glasses--no hat. Wearing blue scarf.

Elliot’s having a monologue about daemons, “Primal urges repressed memories, unconscious habits...Intentions are irrelevant. They don’t drive us. Daemons do.” Elliot throws up. Now Robot has reading glasses--no hat. Scene’s way too dark to see any color.

20:36--22:26: Robot without hat or glasses, waiting with Elliot going through withdrawals. 21:26, Robot has his reading glasses on again--no hat. Red flannel.

33:58--34:23: Robot appears, no hat no reading glasses, telling Elliot he won’t leave him. Red flannel.

40:24--40:46: Robot with reading glasses--no hat. Red flannel.

4:13--6:20: Robot with reading glasses and hat putting tip in jar after scanning a guy’s badge.  Robot in van, reading glasses and no hat. Puts on hat when Elliot is ready to enter Steel Mountain. Blue scarf. Red shirt.

11:12--15:36: Robot with reading glasses and no hat, telling Elliot to tear Bill apart. Blue flannel scarf.

19:51--20:20: Robot wearing reading glasses--no hat. Blue flannel scarf. Red shirt.

37:09--39:40: Robot enters fsociety, reading glasses--no hat. Robot argues with Darlene. Red flannel shirt. Blue flannel scarf.

17:27--20:01: Robot with reading glasses and hat talks with Romero and does some really aggressive shit. The writing in Mandarin is present on the left side of Robot’s hat all the way back in this episode. Robot calls himself crazy and pulls a gun. Fucking hell, Robot’s wearing a green shirt.

Important note here. Elliot stares at a picture of a barn In Krista’s office. This reminds me of the barn in season 3, which might explain why Elliot stares at the building in season 3 so strangely.

6:12--6:29: Robot with sunglasses and hat. Blue flannel shirt.

31:08--32:17: Robot with reading glasses and hat, speaking with Tyrell in car. Blue flannel shirt.

Elliot’s known Robot 3 months by this time. Robot goes on a rant that there are people out there that don’t want him alive. Blue flannel shirt. 

16:43--18:13: Robot outside train station wearing hat and sunglasses, talking about Elliot’s memories of going into the city. Blue flannel shirt. 

27:21--28:35: Robot with reading glasses--no hat, hat in hand, enters Elliot’s old room. Elliot tries to push Robot out the window. “Elliot, you thought you deserved it. You felt guilty about this your whole life, about telling people my secret. This anger was never at me. It was at you. Please, Elliot, you don’t have to be angry at yourself anymore. Just let it go.” Blue flannel shirt. 

32:01--33:06: Robot and Elliot at the cemetery. Robot has reading glasses, no hat. Robot calls Elliot “son.” Blue flannel shirt.

34:44--34:48: Robot hangs up a call Elliot was trying to make to get himself arrested. He’s wearing reading glasses and a hat. Can’t tell the color of the shirt.

36:36--38:24: Robot wearing reading glasses and hat. Here’s a clearer shot of the Mandarin. Robot makes the “sex with your mom” joke that gets him beat up. Blue flannel shirt.

44:02--48:35--Robot with hat and reading glasses in Time Square. He makes a huge rant about pills and advertising and brainwashing. Robot disappears then shows back up on screen with reading glasses and hat. Blue flannel shirt.

I'm curious, what started your passion for writing Brio? Was there a scene or moment that prompted it? Do you have a process or a beta?

Funnily enough, I can actually tell you the exact moment I started writing Beth x Rio fic, anon! 

I think I’m one of like, four people who’s been watching the show since 1.01 dropped last year. I watch a lot of TV (although you probably wouldn’t know it from this tumblr, haha) and that varies between shows I watch fairly seriously (like right now: Total Control, Mr Robot, Bob’s Burgers, The Good Place, Superstore, etc.) to shows I throw on in the background while I’m doing other things (Riverdale, How to Get Away with Murder, pretty much all of the superhero TV shows which I really need to quit, haha). Good Girls was a big ‘To Watch’ show from the announcement of it because of the combination of Christina (who I loved from Mad Men), Retta (who I loved from Parks & Rec) and Mae (who I loved from Parenthood), and while I can’t remember the exact scene, I do remember about halfway through 1.01 settling in and knowing it was a show that ticked a lot of boxes for me, and was going to be a show I watched fairly seriously

And I know a lot of people cite the scene at the end of 1.03 where Beth and Rio eyefucked in her kitchen as The Moment they started to ship it, but I actually started to feel it at the end of 1.02, with him on her picnic table helping Kenny with his homework. They just crackled in a way that they completely shouldn’t have given the context of their relationship in the first two eps and I loved it. 

I remember starting to play around with my first fic in the fandom - An Antique Form - after 1.06 and getting into the thought of Beth and Rio potentially working together, and then completely scrapping it and re-writing and posting it after 1.08 - Shutdown aired because that episode just completely destroyed me in sooo many ways, haha. After that, I wrote Like an Unsung Chorus during the S1/S2 hiatus, and the first chapter of As If They Knew too. 

All my other fics have been posted after S2 started airing. I think the way the fandom sort of exploded certainly helped that - while I write fic because I enjoy it, it’s certainly motivating to post when people are encouraging or sending prompts and you don’t just feel like you’re sending stories out into a void, haha. Plus - TMI - but I was actually pretty unwell with a severe infection in the upper palette of my mouth and up through my sinus very early in the year and have had two minor reparative surgeries on it at different points during the year (my last one was actually about six weeks ago - I’m a lot better now!), and wasn’t able to work easily, and writing fic and answering asks was really good escapism for that. 

As for my process - I’m not sure it’s an especially good one, but it works for me. I usually latch on to either an image or a line of dialogue and I start to build a story up around that. Hilariously, by the time I’m done, the original image or line of dialogue is often edited out, but it always works as a jumping off point. I have a few people who I bounce ideas off or talk through issues with (and who I ask about American things!), but I don’t have a beta, which I probably should have, haha. I do have a pretty extensive editing process - and work in writing and editing professionally, so have a system in that regard, but I’m sure things slip through, as they always do when editing your own work.
