It’s the 23rd in Aotearoa already which means it’s the first day of @mppmaraudergirl’s alight with happiness, married Jily fest.

Please accept my humble @jilymicrofics offering.

Day One - The Big Moments:

James was still half asleep as he brushed his teeth in front of the bathroom mirror. Back to back reconnaissance missions were taking their toll on his circadian rhythm. He was mid spit into the sink when Lily’s cry from the kitchen pierced the air.

“JAMES!”

He took off at a run, wand withdraw from his pocket and taking the stairs so many at a time he may as well be flying. Which he almost was as he descended just far enough and then soared over the banister, propelling himself with one arm.

Oh Merlin, he’d only left his wife a few minutes ago. Had he kissed her cheek as he got out of bed? Had he mumbled a sleepy I love you? He couldn’t remember. Had Voldemort found them, and was he too late?

Lily stood in the kitchen eyes wide and brimming with tears. James saw no sign of an assassin but still his heart was in his throat as toothpaste dribbled off his chin.

“Lily what-” She reached out desperately for him and he stepped toward her, offering his hand. “I’m right here love just tell me what’s wrong… oh.”

He felt it the second his hand connected with her belly. His heart rapidly returned to his chest once joy replaced his fear, and it gave a painful, longing squeeze. There was no questioning it. Their baby had started kicking, and it was suddenly so much more real.

“Well hello to you too,” he whispered to the bump.

As long as he lived he would never forget this first kick.

She raised her eyebrows at the sight that greeted her as she opened the door to her office, folding her arms, hip jutted to the side, she spoke: “I thought we agreed to use your office only. That mine was off limits?” “Potter,” he grumbled. The use of his last name in relation to her caused one of the corners of her lips to curl up, pleased as she was to share this name with him in a private setting. His eyes were closed and he looked crumpled in his dress shirt that she had ironed - he was useless in this department, used to ask Remus to do it but now the honour was all hers - only the night before. “The last thing I am capable of at this very moment is getting you off. Day 1 Big Moments: Witch and Wizard, Husband and Wife

“C’mere,” he whispered, wrapping her into a deep hug, her nose buried against his chest, his chin resting atop her head. “I won’t let go until you’re ready.” He said, knowing deep in his bones it’s what she needed.

And so she stayed, maybe drawing attention from their peers as they passed - but she couldn’t find it in herself to care all that much. Hogwarts was a gossip mill, it took seven years, but Lily got over it. With her Headboy by her side.

It's James and Lily's wedding day, and emotions are…complicated. There's a target affixed to their backs — a muggleborn witch marrying the last Potter — and Alastor Moody plans to use that target to the Order's advantage.

Lily stood before the full-body mirror in the corner of their bedroom, admiring the care with which Dorcas had charmed her hair into a style pulled back from her face. Her hand skimmed the soft material of the white dress that clung to her stomach, the loose bell sleeves falling back at her wrist. It all seemed so familiar, even though it was all wrong. “I really don’t want to do this,” she breathed, sharp eyes darting up to catch James’ gaze in the mirror. He stood not far behind her, wand held tightly in his hand as he tried in vain to organize the curls atop his head. The smile he gave her didn’t quite reach his eyes, his jaw set tight. “Now, I feel like I should be hurt by that,” he joked lightly, through the tension that swelled around them.

“This is my house. Aren’t I supposed to be the one offering tea?”

“Oh no, for the next few months until Baby Potter pops out, I’m afraid you’ll have to deal with me servicing your every need. Consider it as me getting a head start on fulfilling my godfather duties.”

Lily let out an exasperated sigh, “Now, how did you know we were going to ask you to be the baby’s godfather?”

“Really, Lily? Who else would James ask? Wormy?”

Day 3: Thrice Defied (overcoming obstacles ~ probably not quite what was in mind but this is what you get TW: pregnancy and labour) @jilymicrofics

Pain. All Lily could feel was pain. She had anticipated a sense of relief between waves, but it never came. It was more like she was given a reprieve enough to suck in a couple deep breaths before being subjected the worst pain she’d ever experienced (including the time she’d found herself on the wrong end of Bellatrix’s wand).

She’d tried bouncing and rocking and even a warm bath. It felt like nothing was taking the edge off anymore. She barely even registered the way James was stood behind her, squeezing her hips the way the healer had shown him during their antenatal classes, as she leaned against the kitchen table.

“You’ve got this Lily,” he soothed.

“I feel like I’m being set alight from the inside out!” she cried through gritted teeth.

Merlin she couldn’t do this.

“This is the worst of it love. You’re so close. Just a little longer.”

Another wave crashed over her and she let out a guttural animalistic sound. Easy for him to say when he wasn’t the one who’d been contracting for over twenty four hours.

“I can’t. I can’t,” she chanted breathlessly.

“You can. You already are love. I know you’re tired, love.”

Tired was an understatement. Everything in her body was screaming at her to lie down and curl up in a ball. But she couldn’t relent to fatigue.

James slid to his knees, cradling a towel. “Their head is right here, love. You’re so close. One more push!”

Lily tucked chin hard into her chest and pushed with all her might as the next wave came. The heavy feeling leaving her. Replaced by panic as she felt their baby tumble into James waiting towel covered arms.

“You did it! You did it Lil!”

But James words of encouragement meant nothing. Their baby wasn’t crying. Why weren’t they crying?

James brought the bundle up through her legs and into her chest. Lily gripped their slippery baby tightly while he rubbed them with a towel.

Cry. She pleaded. Please, please cry.

A piercing wail broke the silence of the night and relief flooded her.

“It’s a boy. Our little boy.” James kissed her sweaty forehead. “You brilliant thing you!”

Day 2: The little doe-mestic moments

Mornings had a routine in the Potter household. James (ever the fidget) was first to rise, starting his day with a couple of laps around the block. It was him starting the shower that usually roused Lily from the land of nod. She’d shuffle downstairs in her slippers to pop the kettle on and they would end up eating breakfast and being horrified by the front page of the Daily Prophet together.

Except this morning was ever so slightly different. When Lily went to flick the switch on the kettle she found it already hot to the touch. Surprised, she noticed a steaming mug of tea already sitting pride of place on the kitchen table.

He’d been doing that a lot lately. Making her cups of tea without having to be asked. Doting on her in the minutest of ways.

With a smile she returned the favour, twisting the dial on the toaster to its highest degree of toastyness. Just the way her husband liked it.
