An ode to the iRiver iHP-120

For whatever reason, I've found myself deeply nostalgic for high school as of late. And for me, that is intractable from nostalgia for what is perhaps the peak mp3 player ever made:

The iRiver iHP-120 was released in 2003, my sophomore year of high school, and it changed my life. This thing held an astounding 10GB of music—for comparison, most mp3 players at the time were flash based, and held 128 or 256 MB of music. The only big competitor at the time was the 1st generation iPod, a mac-exclusive device that transferred data over firewire and had to be synced using the fledgling iTunes. Juxtapose that to iRiver, who took what I like to call the "we don't give a fuck" approach:

When you plugged in the iHP-120 with USB 2.0, it just showed up as an external hard drive—you could throw whatever you wanted on there. Naturally, it could read mp3 files, but this thing introduced me to the world of audio codecs and processing in a way nothing could have prepared me. WMA files worked fine (a big deal at the time because of DRM issues, during the heyday of KaZaA and Limewire). You want to play uncompressed .WAV files? No problem, put them on there. FLAC files? Absolutely, let your audiophile freak flag fly. Fucking OGG Vorbis files played on this thing. Hell, you could put text files on here and read them.

(The firmware for these was also basically open-source, and people did even crazier stuff with them. By the time I retired my player, it could do gapless playback, crossfading, 10-band equalizing, normalization and more. I think I also changed the boot screen to a picture of Sailor Moon.)

But the magic didn't end at uploading music to the iHP-120—controlling this thing was more intuitive than any other device around at the time. All of your music was displayed on the player in whatever folder structure you loaded onto the device—navigating the music was as simple as using Windows Explorer. You had your standard play/pause, skip forward/back and volume controls on the front joystick, but what are the other buttons for?

Yeah. This thing was also a portable recorder. At anytime you could just hold down the Rec button and start recording with the onboard mic, or using an external input (more on that later). On the right side, an A-B Interval control. You ever wanted to just listen to one part of a song on repeat to learn the lyrics? Just hold down the button. Lastly a hold switch to disable control inputs while it was in your pocket—no accidentally pausing the music.

Okay, back to the external input mentioned before. The top of the iHP-120 is wild.

From right to left, you have a 3.5mm headphone jack (naturally), a 2.5mm microphone jack, the remote control port (more on this in a bit), and in white you have Line In/Out jacks which you could use to record as well as just plug in a second pair of headphones for a friend—jacks which support both 3.5mm analog input, as well as 3.5mm TOSLINK optical cables.

The TOSLINK 3.5mm male plug. A plug I only ever encountered on this device and the Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium, a sound card I wrote a review of in 2009 which seems to still be up at PC Gamer and reading it now I don't know how any of my writing was ever published, let alone in print.

Chances are good you've never encountered this, it's phenomenally uncommon, and TOSLINK as a whole largely died with the emergence of HDMI—but this fucking mp3 player could both record and transmit fiber optic audio in uncompressed stereo or lossy 7.1 surround sound. In high school, I would plug the iHP-120 into our home theatre and listened to Porcupine Tree's Stupid Dream on repeat (side tangent, I'm pretty sad 5.1 album recording never really caught on, but the Dolby Atmos music format is better in every way, and I'm grateful Apple is bringing it into the mainstream).

THE REMOTE

Let me take you back to 2003. I was a depressed theatre kid teenager who would listen to Rooney on repeat on my Koss UR40s while crying over a girl who wanted nothing to do with me.

The other thing I wore everyday besides those headphones? Baggy cargo pants (it was acceptable at the time, I swear). Inside the right cargo pocket was my iRiver iHP-120, and clipped to the velcro flap of that cargo pocket was the iHP-115R remote control.

Every function of the iHP-120 could be controlled from this little fucker. Play/pause and stop buttons. Volume, skip track and recording are all here on rocker switches. You could even change the fucking bitrate of playback on this little thing, all without taking the actual mp3 player out of your pocket because the LCD screen on the remote has all the same info you'd get on the main unit.

The remote itself connected to the iRiver with that big plug you can see in the picture above (shamelessly stolen from Nathan Edwards who I worked with at PC Gamer in the late 2000s and only while writing this post discovered has already written a much more professional ode to the beauty of the iHP-120 this year).

You would plug your headphones into the remote, (or in my case you could also plug in your 1988 Chevrolet 2500 suburban's tape deck adaptor and have controls at your fingertips. No more distracted driving).

I think I'm about done waxing nostalgic, but I really do miss the days of discrete devices—I kind of find myself fighting back against my smartphone. I have a camera I carry around, a pen and paper planner and writing notebook, and a kindle for reading. There's something appealing about not having my phone be my access to music either—rather, having a device that I just threw my music on and it plays it really well was rad. The iHP-120 was really fucking rad.

If your mom was a teacher, would you want to be in her class? Oh my, I doubt she would even pass the simulation/screen test haha. Her temper is not built to last long around kids or teenagers.

As a kid, did you love playing on Neopets? I used to have this Neopets game on my phone where my character had to jump over obstacles, and I loved playing that for hours. But I had to connect to the internet if I wanted to have access to more Neopets stuff, and as an 8 year old in 2006, I had no idea how that would even work or if we even already had that kind of technology available in the country then.

What is the background on your desktop? Why'd you choose that? It’s one of the default backgrounds available on my laptop; I chose it because it’s pink-ish, and because it looks nice enough that I don’t feel the need to look on the internet for another background.

Are you one of those people who keep everything charged (iPod etc.)? Not until recently. Before Covid, when I used to go out more often and when life had generally been more ~hectic, it was hard to keep track of the battery life on my devices so sometimes I’d leave the house with just 20% on me haha. These days, since I seldom get to go out, it’s easier to pay attention and ensure my laptop and phone are both at 100%, or at least 80-85%.

Are you confortable with people going through your phone? For the most part yes, but I probably wouldn’t let them since I have apps I don’t want them checking, like Safari (because I’m conscious about my search history) and Notes (because I ramble on there - a lot).

Be honest. Are you really good or bad at lying? I am good at it, but it makes me feel bad.

How do you react when you get a gift you REALLY don't like? I’ve never been faced with this situation before, but I’ve gotten gifts that I never vocally asked for and it’s really not that hard to thank the giver and keep the gift close to me so that they can see I appreciate their present nonetheless. 

Do you really care about what toothpaste you use? Not for the most part, but as much as possible I obviously would want to avoid cheaper brands if there are better-reviewed ones out there anyway.

What's your number one most played song on you MP3/iPod? Spotify doesn’t really release this information until they show you your year-end stats, sooooooooo. 

Do you find that hair never cooperates when you're going out? I don’t think it never cooperates; it’s just nothing special, is all.

Ever kept a textbook that you were supposed to give back to the school? ...Students give back their textbooks? That’s new information to me. Here, we have to buy our textbooks, but we get to keep them. My mom used to donate our old textbooks for less-fortunate kids or hand them down to my younger cousins once we were done with them, so that they don’t end up deteriorating or taking up space at home.

Would you like it if the whole world spoke one language? I can understand how this would be incredibly convenient, especially business-wise; but as someone who loves and is passionate about learning different cultures I feel like this would make things very bland very fast.

What shoes do you most like to wear to school/work? I wore sneakers every day when I was a student. I don’t get to go to an actual workplace yet, but I imagine I’ll have to stock up on flats and Oxfords should the time come for us to be allowed.

Would mind-reading really be a blessing or a curse? For me, probably more of a curse because I tend to have difficulties handling the truth.

You can eliminate homework for one subject, what would it be? Calculus.

Are you looking forward to summer of '10? Any plans? I have no idea what I did then.

Are you satisfied with the results of the Olympics? I never paid attention to any of the Olympics I’ve caught in my lifetime.

Do you often get bitten by mosquitos, or rarely ever? Yeah, many of them hang out at the rooftop so it’s common for me to sport bites and red marks all over my legs.

It’s not the ‘best,’ but rather the best find lol - I spotted Beyoncé’s first album (released in 2003) at a mainstream music store in the freaking 2010s. I didn’t have a lot of money at the time but I instantly bought it anyway since 1) it was the only physical album of hers still missing in my collection, and 2) I knew I would never see it anywhere ever again.

Have you read all of the Twilight books, or do you not care for it? I’ve read the whole series like 2-3 times.

The last concert I went to was Hozier here in Grand Rapids, last year sometime. I think it was last year. :x My time sense is all fucked up. Anyway, I’ve been to way too many concerts to start naming one as the best one ever, that’s crazy. Most of the shows I’ve been to were awesome as fuck (there were a couple ehhhh... ones, and then there was one I was way too high to enjoy lmao, but usually I have a great time).

17. Do you have a favorite movie soundtrack? What is it? >> I have a favourite movie soundtrack composer, actually, and that’s Clint Mansell. Everything he does is just... AAAAAAAAA for me. 18. Would you want to be a band groupie? Why or why not? >> I had a phase way back when where I was obsessed with groupie culture (from like the late sixties through the eighties) and if you’d asked me then, I’d have said yes. I’ve wised up by now and I definitely would not want that.

19. What is a band/singer you would like to see but haven’t gotten a chance to yet? >> Yeah, there’s a lot of bands and singers like that. But I’d have to be really picky nowadays about who I went to see, because I just can’t deal with most concert environments as well as I used to anymore.

20. Do you care more about the beat of the music you listen to, or the lyrics? >> I mean, when it comes to the first listen, it’s going to be the melody that catches me. If that doesn’t happen, then I’m not even going to bother looking at the lyrics, so...

21. Does anyone in one of your favorite bands play an unusual instrument? >> I listen to some prog bands, so there’s definitely some unusual instruments happening in at least some songs.

Which method do you prefer, and which is your favorite? >> I would love to watch musicals live, but I definitely cannot afford it. I’m fine watching recordings of them (or movie adaptations, in some cases). My favourite stage musical is Phantom of the Opera (I say “stage musical” because I also have a favourite movie musical, and that’s Repo! the Genetic Opera).

33. What was the worst concert you’ve ever attended before, and what made it the worst? >> Taste of Chaos at Nassau Coliseum. It was the worst because arena shows are just the worst, period. I was right up in front (my friends and I camped out overnight) and I just got repeatedly slammed against the barricade and crowd-surfers landed on my head multiple times, et cetera. I’m surprised I didn’t leave with actual injuries (was wondering if I was gonna need a neck brace by the end), but I did feel pretty damn shitty the next day.

I’ll just say that I love nineties-era music videos, and some from the aughts as well. As far as recent artists are concerned, I think Orville Peck makes really evocative and moody (not necessarily moody like pensive or depressive. mood-y. mood-evoking) videos that I appreciate.

Through the Looking Glasses: AR’s Platform Will Be Right Before Your Eyes by Ravi Jain

In my last blog post, I looked at the rise of wearables up to where we are now, with the predominant category being the wrist-mounted product market which is often broken into subcategories of smartwatch and fitness tracker, though those are quickly converging. In fact I would posit that one could map these broad categories of growth in wearables looking ahead to 2020 and beyond:

Wrist mounted

Head mounted (goggles/glasses)

Ear mounted

Skin patches

Misc clothing

Again, this is just my take after ingesting a lot of analysis on wearables over the last few weeks. For the purposes of this post, I want to take a look at the future with just one of those segments, the market for head mounted wearables. And after lumping categories together, I will “de-lump” by just taking a close look at the smart-glasses market and the implications of that market.

So let’s define what we mean by smart-glasses. I would consider how we’ve named our phones “smart phones” based on their computing capabilities so I would extend that modifier’s purpose to the phrase of “smart glasses”: eyeglasses with integrated computing power that both ingest and create content and data. There are some products that have come to market that fit this description but none have made enough of an impression to be considered significant players in the overall wearables market.

To really understand how the smart glasses market will emerge, we would need to take a deep dive into the goggles market which for now is primarily driven through gaming and Virtual Reality experiences. Many of the technical and UX improvements in headset goggles can be leveraged by smart glasses. And in fact, recent news of Apple’s entry into this market suggest this is a path they will take by first offering a headset goggle product before following up with smart glasses.

In real broad terms, a key differentiator between goggles and glasses is that the head-mounted goggles are a fully closed visual system: you essentially are looking at two small screens that utilize algorithms to simulate depth. Some do have cameras that can effectively show you what you are looking at, often with the intent of then manipulating that visual, but still it’s not actually what you are looking at, it’s still one generation removed. Thus the strong push for gaming and other virtual reality experiences that showcase the technology. Why replicate your humdrum apartment when you can instead be looking at the desert of Tatooine (or Jakku for any Star Wars neophytes!)

[completely esoteric sidenote: my first VR experience was actually when Verizon gave out free Google cardboard headsets that enabled one to experience Star Wars original VR content, way back in December 2015!]

Smart glasses on the other hand are devices that have lenses that you can actually look through. So when you look at your hand and shake it, it’s your hand, not the giant lobster claw you might see while wearing an Oculus Rift headset. However the lenses do offer the ability to also act as a screen to overlay content/information. I’m going to write that word out again, because it’s an important one. Hell, I’ll even all-caps it!

OVERLAY

The difference in overlaying content on top of “reality” vs. 100% manufactured content is what differentiates AR from VR. Augmenting reality by adding to it vs completely creating a new “virtual” reality. A factor of the experience of this is also a “sometimes on” vs “always on” experience. Some of the user experience challenges with VR were reports of “VR sickness” or what some people with far greater science understanding than me term “vergence-accommodation conflict” (which coincidentally will also be the name of my upcoming EDM-themed band… just kidding!)

My most extended VR experience was with the mind-blowing installation my multimedia artist/musician/creative-all-around Laurie Anderson out at MASSMOCA, the Chalkroom. I spent a good 20 minutes or so flying around this amazing immersive space and as I staggered out of the room to the rest of the galleries, I definitely felt residual queasiness. It was a touch of motion sickness with just general mental unease… wasn’t horrible and I’m glad I did the experience, but it was definitely kind of like an art hangover!

I would imagine an overlay experience to be much less disruptive (and I say imagine because I haven’t had the opportunity to try any existing smart glasses.) Instead of your entire field of vision being hijacked or replaced, additional contextual content is placed over this. Some mainstream AR experiences that might help one visualize this include Pokemon Go.

But instead of animated cuddly figures, you might have arrows that show you directions to the nearest coffee shop. Or perhaps it’s a translation of a sign to a language you understand. Or background information about sculptural pieces in a outdoor park. It’s adding a layer of data driven content to your existing environment.

Beyond the AR capabilities, smart-glasses could also work with your phone in a similar way that smartwatches do, by enabling phone calls and/or video chats; by offering customizable notifications or messages. The challenge as with any product is to make the user experience an intuitive one and make the price point not a prohibitive one. Based on Apple’s record of success with transforming existing digital products like mp3 players, mobile phones and fitness trackers into the iPod, iPhone and Apple Watch, I do have confidence that their product could be the one to make smart-glasses mainstream.

Most likely he would have his Spotify account, playlists full of hard rock, metal, alternative rock/metal, nu metal, emo, and other subgenres of rock and metal. He either blasts it in his police car or when he’s on his motorcycle, through his bluetooth device he often uses for work which doubles as his earphone. 

47. do they like tv shows or movies? or neither?

He will occasionally watch it here and there, but he’s never been a TV person who could sit like a couch potato and binge watch the series for long. He’s a busybody, a workaholic law man who works tirelessly and relentlessly, because his work ethics and dedication to his profession is what acts as his coping mechanism to get over the deaths of his family and the gnawing heartache and guilt that bombards his heart. He does prefer movies in that regard, because they’re mostly between one to two hours long and he doesn’t have to be obliged to commit too much of his time while watching them. He would often have crime, psychological thrillers and dramas on as a white noise while he works.
