Tatsuya Endo's Character Commentary from the Official Spy x Family Fanbook English Translation Part 2:

Long post ahead. <<Part 1 here>>

Franky:

(Endo) The model for his character is Mozzie, who is next to the main character of the foreign drama "White Collar". The glasses are also exactly the same. He's a really good character who talks a lot of nonsense, but not a despicable one. It is rare to find a character with a model in "SPY x FAMILY".

This is Mozzie from White Collar, played by the actor Willie Garson.

The stripes on his socks are intended to make him look a little more fashionable, to give him a popular look.

He is well liked by the people from the underground. The tobacco shop is a sort of hideout for Franky, and if he's chased out of there, I think he's got another place and identity. His name "Franky" seems like not his real name too.

Sylvia Sherwood: 

(Endo) The cool big sister superior officer. Big sister...? Her design was inspired by the Paris Collection, or whatever fashion magazine I was looking at. Her glasses, curly hair, and the hat are all a bit too troublesome to draw...

She has the appearance of an independent woman, but in her private life, she is a very sloppy person. She lives in a very dirty room. I may draw that in an extra chapter soon. Her fighting ability is unknown, but it seems she's not that strong. 

Yuri Briar:

(Endo) His visual is exactly like Yor, a male version one. I thought about him having short hair, but it didn't feel right, so I decided to go with my current style. If he doesn't talk, I'm sure he'll be popular (with girls). I wonder if he's interested in anyone other than his sister? 

(Hayashi) I think he's interested in his job?

(Endo) Yuri is certainly a very hardworking and a serious person. He really wants to protect the peace of Ostania, and I think he truly believes that this is for the sake of his sister. After all, she is his sister. He doesn't seem to have any hobbies that involve spending money, and since his taste buds are spoiled, he doesn't seem to eat gourmet food either. 

He thinks Anya is a "despicable little brat". Compared to Franky, he's not used to children, so he competes with them in the same way.

Henry Henderson:

(Endo) Most of the characters are introduced only for a particular episode, but if I try to draw them and find them easy to move, I stick with them. I never thought that Henderson and Yor's boss, the shopkeeper, would play such an active role...

By the way, he's the only character who has a fanservice scene (the shower scene) in the work.

I liked the mismatched jersey he wore during the dodgeball round, so I'd like to have him do various cosplays as well. Like doing "Today's class is [redacted]", but I don't think there will be much demand for it.

Damian Desmond: 

(Endo) He's exactly like Domyoji from "花より団子 / Hana Yori Dango / Boys Over Flower" (by Yoko Kamio) (Laughs). In his first appearance, he was a jerk who boasted about his status, but he soon became a good boy. I wanted to make him a meaner character though.

This is Domyoji Tsukasa, the main lead of the romance series Hana Yori Dango or Boys Over Flower, a manga by Yoko Kamio

(Hayashi) Because Ewin and his friend are good guys, I think he's getting better hanging around with them. They're really good guys who are always there for Damian and give him the attention that he needs. Damian should be thankful to the both of them.

(Endo) In the future, there may or may not be a dark episode of "After all, humans only want money and power...." (Laughs)

Becky Blackbell:

(Endo) Like Damian, she started out as a tsun-tsun (tsundere), but she soon became friendly.... And she was able to get along with Anya in just one episode. She's very easy going.

She thinks people her age are "brats" and doesn't have many friends other than Anya. I would like to make at least 1 more person to be her friend. Her personality and design are probably based on Marika-chan from "愛してるぜベイベ★★ / I love you baby ★★" (Yoko Maki). She's precocious and cute.

Unrelated, but I kinda like her last name "Blackbell". I don't remember the reason why I gave it to her though.

Fiona Frost: 

(Endo) I really like "Nightfall's" design including her coat. The image color is "blue" in contrast to Yor. In terms of standing position, her character is to stir up the romance part of the story. I thought of it as a way to add variety to the story.

(Hayashi) There was quite a bit of talk about putting out a character on WISE's side as a friend during Twilight's meeting. I thought it would be nice to have at least one colleague for Twilight.

(Endo) The name "Nightfall"  means to "follow around after Twilight (evening)". Emile and Ewin start with "E" because they're following Damian "D". I know people might think that the names of the other characters also have meanings to them, but I actually just added them on a whin (Laughs)

Donovan Desmond: (I can't add his pic anymore)

(Endo) Since he's the last boss, I'm careful not to make him look like a dull character. With a face like this, I'm sure that Damian looks like his mother (Laughs)

He was a member of the ruling party during the war, but now he's a member of the opposition party, so I have an image of him hiding in the background.

(Hayashi) He's a character with a lot of secrets, but the goal is to get into his heart, so please pay attention to him in the future!

Imagine Catching Neal's Eye at the Library

(Alternative Title: Reading is Fundamental)

A/N: Requested by anonymous. I'm actually thinking of using this as a sort of prologue to a oneshot for another request. This just barely missed the mark of being a short oneshot, so enjoy this long imagine!

The Harry Belafonte Public Library, located a mile away from June’s, was comfortably within his radius and the route to it just happened to pass right by a little Hungarian bakery. Books and Wi-Fi seemed to cost an exorbitant amount of money when rent and a phone plan ate up over ninety percent of his stipend, so no matter how much Neal would prefer to own his own books, he was resigned to making use of the library. The interior design, at least, was a refreshingly minimalist take compared to the clutter of the outside world.

Neal leisurely followed the signs around a couple of bends to find the computer desks. A couple were unoccupied, so luckily he wasn’t going to have to wait. As he pulled out a chair, he looked to his right at the woman using the computer bank at the far end. While he gracefully sat and pulled up his seat, he couldn’t help but look her over a second time.

She was so beautiful. Her H/C hair was hastily pinned out of her eyes and mostly covered in a slouchy knit beanie that matched the color of her bookbag. One of her hands was controlling the computer mouse, while the other one held a fine-point pen over a notebook. Her eyes looked between screen and paper swiftly as she multitasked, and her lips moved just a little as she read in a way that reminded him achingly of Kate.

The artist had wanted a computer for a reason. Mindful that he shouldn’t expect the bureau to respect his privacy, even on a public terminal, Neal reigned in the impulses to visit any sites or make any searches that may be considered suspect while combing current events, brushing up on the art scene in New York, and even browsing some art supplies at an online store.

The whole time he made use of the computer bank, he kept catching his attention drifting to his right. He gleaned several things between his inconspicuous glances and looks through reflections. Chiefly among them was that the woman was named Y/N. She had taken her planner out of her bag and he had seen the name embossed on the front. Secondly was that she was either a researcher, a student, or a very avid hobbyist, because she were so absorbed in her searching and notetaking that she didn’t notice his repeated looks, even when Neal knew he should have been being more subtle. Y/N either lived with a pet or had recently been to the dwelling of someone who did, and she liked live music – her shirt was from a concert.

Y/N left just over an hour after he had sat down, leaving Neal mulling over what little he had learned and why he felt so drawn to the woman. Maybe it was because she wasn’t a fed, like the many he was surrounded by. Maybe it was his inner romantic, wishing to have a sweet meet-cute story such as using side-by-side computers at the library. Whatever it was, Neal left picturing her face and the way she had scrunched her nose when she read something she hadn’t liked.

On the next day Neal had off from work, he decided to go back to the library again. An important part of being a competent conman and forger was to be up-to-date on major events and news within the art world. Reading was a familiar and crucial pastime.

He went straight to the computer banks now that he knew where they were, and only when he didn’t see Y/N did he realize he was disappointed she wasn’t there. Neal made a slight face at himself as he sat down. Meeting her may have been nice, but he hadn’t struck up a conversation when he’d had the opportunity and he had no business pining to see a woman whose name he only knew because he had been benignly spying.

That Sunday, the library was unusually busy and Neal had to wait to use a computer. In the meantime, he decided to apply for a library card, browse their selections, and pick out a few books. After checking them out, he went back towards the computers and found a seat, where he started reading while waiting for someone to finish with their screen.

Movement caught his eye as a girl vacated her spot, and that was when he clocked the knit beanie. It was the right color – he looked to her face and saw it was Y/N. After a second he realized he had frozen, so Neal picked up his books and took them with him to the empty space by the computer.

He didn’t have a very good view of her from where he was this time. Neal considered making up an excuse to talk to her so he would know what her voice sounded like, but for some reason he just couldn’t bring himself to deliberately pickpocket her, then return her wallet on her way out.

Partly because Mozzie wanted to try a seafood bar on Saturday, and partly because Neal had either a hope or a hunch that Y/N had a library routine on Sundays, Neal went back to the library exactly a week after he had last been, this time arriving earlier. He was able to get a computer almost right away, but there was no sign of Y/N or her comfy hat.

Neal read online for long enough that he lost track of time, becoming interested and invested in the articles and soaking up what he was learning. International incidents were always fun to read about. It was when a chair scraped that he next looked up – and there she was, sans hat this time, but still with the bag.

International incidents suddenly didn’t seem nearly as interesting as what could happen next, if he could just get over his inexplicable nervousness when it came to meeting this beautiful woman.

Day 79 (20/12/16) pool day! 07:40 up! Croissants next to the school. Free cup of coffee from the school’s front desk and 08:15 tuk-tuk to the pool, eight of us in the back, with the driver, Sam and Si in the front. We compared notes on where we were staying. As it turns out, we were all in the Tropicana. The deal must have just been too good for everyone to pass up. Pat & Charlotte had the penthouse. Very nice! When we arrived at the pool, we were all invited to take the swimming test; eight laps of a very modest pool (see the pics). It was at this point that the Monkey and Panda both realized that whilst they can both swim with reasonable confidence and proficiency, they do in fact swim almost twice as slow as other people. A lot of laughing and joking as we doggy-paddled around the pool, trying to count all the way to eight. Passed that one. Tread water for five minutes? No worries. They even gave us the option to float. As the most “buoyant” of the group, Panda sailed this one. Next up was getting acquainted with our equipment; Buoyancy Control Device (BCD), Regulator, Blah Blah Blah. Sam took our group and we were told how it works, how to put it on, how to maintain it and how to use it. We got briefed on the exercises that we’d be doing once we got in the pool, confirming the hand signals that we’d get to start us off. Wet-suited up, it was time to get in the baby pool (even smaller than the last one and only about 1.5m deep to make sure that you don’t drown… unless you’re a dwarf). Hopped into the pool, strapped ourselves into our rigs and played around, breathing through the regulators. Face in the water, blowing bubbles and trying to sink a bit, the group tried to get to grips with this new skill. We were the aquatic version of Bambi on ice. The Monkey didn’t like it. Breathe through the mouth-piece on the surface? Fine. Face in the water? Fine. Sink? Nope! It’s by no means a natural feeling to be underwater and still breathing and right now, this wasn’t something Monkey was up for. Sam was amazing, balancing encouragement and space brilliantly. By this point, Panda had just about figured out how to get to the bottom of the pool and was now breathing whilst kneeling on the floor. The next 20 minutes were spent fin pivoting, taking the regulator out, filling the mask up with water and clearing it, taking the mask off, taking the equipment off of your back underwater, all the while concentrating on not drowning. Graduating from the baby pool, we made our way to the big pool, at 2.8m deep. Once in there we did some more of the same, but this time using the BCD to hover in the water whilst we did our drills. Then for some surface drills. We learnt two different ways of getting your buddy back to the boat if they’re too knackered to do so under their own steam: The normal tandem tow and the Mickey Mouse Porno. In the Monkey’s absence, Panda’s buddy would be the Brazilian instructor. It’s funny how things work out. On hearing the Mickey Mouse Porno brief, Panda’s (weight) belt instantaneously fell off. Sam claimed that she had nothing to do with it, as she was at least ten feet away from the Panda, but we know… At this point, Monkey was acting as camera lady and figured that the best way to ensure that anything incriminating going on in the pool was captured correctly, was to take as many compromising photos as possible. Oddly Charlotte declined Monkey’s offer of a Mickey Mouse Porno photo. What a prude! All of the splish splashing done, we headed back to the school for a spot of lunch and the second classroom session. The second followed the same style as the first. Little bit of book, little bit of DVD. All done by 14:30, we thought it might be quite nice to have a walk along the beach. The place where we were didn’t have a proper beach as such, but there was sand and water and it was nice enough. We found a little place to have a beer and practice some more Portuguese. Sam had recommended seeing the New Heaven Dive School’s baby turtles. We managed to find the four big concrete tanks with half a dozen of the little fellas all paddling about. At the size of your thumb they were so cute. “Fin! Noggin’!” “Sweeeeeet!” and “Remember: Rip it, roll it and punch it!” The weather had been particularly damp the last couple of days and it had rained while we in the pool. This meant that the conditions were perfect for bloody mozzies! The whole place was swarming with them and we’d need to douse ourselves in repellant. Our homework study session went very similarly to last night’s, with some Changs, before heading up to Tukta, another restaurant recommended, this time by Sam. Lovely Thai Green Curry and Pad Thai. It continued to rain and Koh Tao’s drainage system doesn’t seem to be too well designed to accommodate this. The streets were flooded, the ditches were flooded and the place was generally very wet. We got back to the hotel to have a few more drinks in the garden (confident in our 90% deet mixture’s efficacy). While there we heard the strangest noise, like a cow. Moooooo. Pause. Moooooo. Pause. Repeat. At a volume not unlike a cow, but at a regular frequency just outside of our hotel. When we got to the room, the noise was no quieter and Monkey had failed to imbibe sufficient sleepy night night juice (Chang/Spy) to block it out. The Panda went sound.
