Description: Gold is forged in fire. Men in the furnace of adversity… Step into the extraordinary life of Jake Harper-Ronald, a man whose childhood dream of becoming a soldier led him on an unparalleled journey. In 1966, he fulfilled his ambition as a conscript in the Royal Rhodesia Regiment, only to embark on a series of adventures that most soldiers can only imagine. From early days in the elite Parachute Regiment in the UK to his pivotal role as the official photographer during the infamous 'Bloody Sunday' in Northern Ireland, Jake's path was one of courage and resilience. He left an indelible mark on history, capturing iconic moments through his lens that still resonate today. Returning to Rhodesia in 1974, Jake's journey continued with the ultra-tough SAS and the Selous Scouts. His daring cross-border raids and contributions as a professional soldier showcased his unwavering commitment. Despite facing the trials of combat, he persevered, even transitioning to a top-secret Special Branch callsign and later joining Zimbabwe's Central Intelligence Organisation. Jake's remarkable story unfolded further as he operated as an intelligence agent for global powers such as South Africa, Britain, and the US. His path was not without challenges; accusations of treason led to his time in solitary confinement at Goromonzi Detention Centre. Undeterred, he emerged from adversity, and in 1989, MI6 enlisted his expertise to train and lead militias combating Renamo in Mozambique. His efforts were so impactful that his Special Forces unit was integrated into Mozambique's National Army. Witnessing the harrowing realities of Mozambique, Jake's journey came full circle as he returned to Zimbabwe and ventured into the private security sector and then on to private military contracting in Iraq. Despite his health declining, his resolve remained unshaken until his passing in 2007 at the age of 59. Immerse yourself in an incredible narrative of bravery, sacrifice, and tenacity as 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' chronicles the awe-inspiring life of Jake Harper-Ronald. This is more than a biography; it's a testament to the indomitable spirit of a true soldier and a captivating journey that will leave you inspired and in awe. Read It Now!
My Review: This is a book about a man who was always THERE, or THERE adjacent, or knew the people who were right THERE. From his days with 1 PARA during Operation Banner, to his time with the SAS and Selous Scouts Recce Troop, his time locked up in Goromonzi, to his final years in Mozambique and Iraq, Jake was really in the thick of it time and time again.
You'll see a lot of people talk about his overcoming adversity, his struggles, or focus on his actions and incidents, and it's all there, page after page. If you want to know what selection was like, the physical and mental toughness required, if you want to know what the contact and firefights, an interesting view of the Paras in NI, and SAS operations across the borders, this book has it in spades.
But what Budd was able to write about that sets this book apart, was the more personal aspects. His two marriages, his feelings toward Rhodesia as a nation, staying on and working for the new government in Zimbabwe and more. To read the chapter on the election night and about Mugabe's slaughter of the Matabele cuts right to the bone and is raw in its emotion. To read the chapter about his time in Goromonzi is incredibly difficult to read because of its detail and horrors. More importantly, Budd and Jake never shy away from the trauma and its effects on him after that. How much that changed him, how much he continued to suffer because of that.
This is a man who killed, who had so many friends killed, who saw atrocities, and isn't shy about talking about an incident that he was ashamed to have partaken in. And a man who stayed, even when so many others left, who knew his faults and admitted them while sometimes trying to blame the stresses of the job, but accepted much of the responsibility for the things he did. Which is why that chapter on Goromonzi hits home so hard. As he succinctly put it, he was always willing to pay the price for the things he did, but to be tortured and destroyed in so many ways for something that someone else did, for something he was innocent of… that was too much to handle, too much to endure, and yet… he did. He survived, but surviving doesn't mean you aren't affected, don't carry the wounds and scars, and doesn't mean you are the same person you were before.
There is a lot to say about this book, and each section contains so much incredible info, so many good stories, and the writing is so fluid. From being a covert photographer and political shenanigans when he was with CIO and Special Branch, to the fireforce concept and what it was like fighting a war against all sides while heavily sanctioned. His experiences with the complexities of South Africa's machinations inside of Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, and how even his own former friends wanted him dead for staying behind all give you an incredibly vivid picture of his life and the world around him. I'm really glad I grabbed this book, and reading it was definitely one of the highlights of this years group of books.

it may not look like it but this took a long time to make
heres a rough ability breakdown for the totk rewrite project (i know its hard to read in the pic so let me clear it up and add some extra info)
theres two ability wheels now, sages are not frame rate killing glitch ghosts around you but their abilities are selected through the wheel on the right (pic is rough concept, it is clearer what is selected and what isnt + it has names in final version, symbols are placeholders as well) and bound to the player, when you acitvate it an aura appears similar to the arm abilities and their ghostly form appears besides you, charging or firing when you hit A while the ability is active
SHIEKAH ARM WHEEL
ANALYZE: zelda tells you info about targeted enemy/NPC, it gives you info about it and informs you more dynamically about important things than the foto-entries do
FOTO its fotos :) zelda joins selfies tho and does silly poses with you
REWIND: functions like the time recall in canon, but this time it is a more developed version of stasis instead
AMIIBO: its ... amiibo
HOOKSHOT: grab onto anything (perhaps restricted but not yet decided), you pull yourself+zelda to heavy stuff, light weight objects are pulled to you (including light enemies like bats or small slimes) grab onto something and hold onto it, usable like a vine (think, ww grappling hook) but with limited duration (battery power?)
AUTOBUILD: like in canon but it uses luminous stones if material isnt all there (or other material you put out to so its more versatile and you are more aware of what you have, no accidental spending then)
BUILD: similar to canon, but no glue (it kinda just fuses with no extra graphic unless pehaps like a bolt or sth), you put stuff together anyway you want; build is also used for weapons (no extra ability needed), you just build a weapon on the ground and pick it up afterwards (it has to be a weapon handle part and then sth else to it, otherwise it wont turn into a weapon)
INFUSE: infuse somethign with ancient energy, useless on normal objects usually(?) but reactivates broken or deactivated tech like elevators and doors; used to dynamically access caves and especially labs (labs serve a similar function as shrines, they are old shiekah labs that broke over time, puzzles are diverse things like traversal and little quests in which you help the researcher ghosts of the people that died in these labs (by the calamity, earthquakes, accidents, or killed by the royal army when their tech was banned and they refused to give it up)
SAGE WHEEL:
WIND GUST: same as in canon
LIGHT SHIELD/LIGHT LASER: zelda uses a shield of light to protect herself in combat, it does not affect the player (or perhaps only when you happen to be within range, which is small, this is more a character thing for her than useful for you) for the player through the selection wheel; aim and tell her to shoot a light laser like rauru did in the moldora cutscene in canon totk (a bit more dynamic) it deals very high damage to anything hit but has the highest cooldown of all abilities; deals extra damage to miasma enemies
THUNDERSTRIKE: similar as in canon, it charges through you however (so the charging only gets stopped if YOU shoot an arrow or get hit)
FIRE .. BOOM THING: similar as in canon but yuno has a little animation of daruks shield around him again :)
YIGA TELEPORT/KOGA CLONES (undecided yet): A: target a location in range and koga grabs you like a naughty kitten and teleports you both to the targetted location, you spawn in a little above ground giving you time to either perform a bullet time move or a sword attack from above B: summons a bunch of koga clones that serve as a distraction for enemies and combat support, they die in one hit (reference to kogas and monk moz kyoshias similar moveset; since there are no sage ghosts around you all the time and a max of two companions (zelda always, sage in sage dungeon) it serves as a replacment for that)
WATER ...WELL(?): sidon gives you a shield of water, elemental effect is applied to weapon and lasts as long as the shield does no matter how many times you attack; if it is hit by an enemy it breaks but you dont take damage; if the shield lasts it entire duration without getting hit it it grants you a percentage of your missing health back upon dissolving (ref to mipha healing powers anyone??)
im open to constructive feedback but overall im quite happy of makign it work out like that, although there are quite a few things that need polish i think this is both realistic and works well with what else i have been writing; remember tho, this is my rewrite so im undoing the things i dont like, like riju never being there when you need her bc she runs right up to the enemy and her losing her charge bc she keeps getting knocked over + overall uselessness of minerus robot (to me)
(totk rewritten project)
#ganondoodles#zelda#art#tloz#loz#totk#ganondoodles rewrites totk#this took me so long omg#i hope this all is somehwat cool#i liked the idea of all the abilities being a thing you can swap on the fly but i couldnt get it to work with the controls#and putting it all into one wheel would be hell to try and select anything#so you choose a wheel with left stick and the ability with right stick#of course the wheel that isnt selected turn grey and all that and it will get a better look too#this is a mock up after all#... took alot of brain juice to try and balance it how i liked#hope you like it too :D

My puter is not working so while I try to figure out how to fix it I'm trying to fit the triceratons on lone man au (name pending)
More under the cut :)
Whether is trax or Moz, they all came to earth bc the triceratons obviously have beef with the kraang, the problem is that they're 10 years late (the war's over buddy, go home) but there's still a lot of kraang influence all over the planet so either way they're staying bc the triceratons HATE kraang and want them OBLITERATED GONE REDUCED TO NOTHING
They don't like earthlings either, so this is not a "we're here to help :D" this is a "I don't like you, but I dislike them even more, so stay outta the way"
Raph doesn't trust their asses ofc and as the former leader of a resistance he keeps a close eye on them and tries to make them his allies, it's hard, but at the end of the day he gets one particular triceratons to open up to him (just barely)
SO if it's Trax then it's a lot more easier for Raph to gain his trust, Trax already plans to leave the triceratons army anyway, he's just there 'cus they REALLY hate the Kraang, (they whipped out most of their race, ofc he wants to kill them) so the story goes on from there, triceratons want to destroy the earth bc there's so much kraang left overs on it, most of the living beings are already extinct amd it will take forever to build it up again (also the risk of the kraang influence leaving the earth and spreading again is far to great) , then it's up to Raph to stop this bc why not, hero moves are totally his style
Trax warms up to him bc they're both warriors on a resistance, fighting for what they believe and for those who matter, they've got a lot more in common than they think, and Raph's a sweetheart (and fucking HOT /j) so Trax would eventually leave the triceratons and join the Earth's resistance (and kiss 😳)
If it's Mozar then I'm thinking more of an enemies to lovers lmao, Mozar being the commander is the one planning on destroying the earth, Raph tries to have a convo with him, from former commander to commander, on how the world is worth saving, Mozar ofc doesn't really care and it's actively trying to blow up the planet, and Raph (and a few resistance guys ofc) stops him every time (just barely most of the time)
I guess Mozar would eventually warm up to him thanks to his spirit, they're both COMMANDERS, they've got people under their charge, Raph KNOWS what's like to have to fight to defend your people and to survive, Mozar finds his intentions honorable and that's something he can get behind
Idk, I'm digressing akdjakjs but don't be afraid to say what you think :> I'm always taking suggestions C:
#nickkk.txt#lone man au#does Mozar blow up the planet at the end?#probably yea#listen i had a HUGE FAT CRUSH on him when i was like 8 😔 he was my first hear me out (nobody heard me out 😔😔😔)#so i HAD to get him on this aksnskdhs#whether he loses or wins imma make raph and mozar kiss <33333 that would heal me (probably) /j#nobody's gon read this skjskajskahskwbdja

NAURETH // MK OC kombat set // a bit mixed between 11/12 games

Ability 1: Tombstone. Invoking curses she summons a sword-wielding skeleton that appears from beneath the ground and attacks the enemy 1 time.
Ability 2. Pestilence. With her free hand she casts a ray of decay magic to the signed direction, D.O.T. Improved vers: summons a bigger ray, which makes more damage
Ability 3. Knight's pact. summons 3 ghost swords of the dead warriors which fly to the signed direction. Improved vers: summons 6 swords.
Ability 4. Plaguebringer. Calls for Moz, four legged demon that pounces on the enemy from behind.
Close range style: wide, aggressive, reckless, strong attacks. Really reminds me of Kylo Ren's fighting style.
Defence: Naureth holds the blade of the sword with her other hand and defends herself with it.
OST Music:
Vígundr - Loddfáfnir

"The Necromancer"

*chuckles* "You can do better."
X-Ray:
Harbringer: With a wide swing, Naureth's sword hits her opponent's shoulder, slicing it down to his chest, then with her free hand she places a hand on her opponent's head, green magic penetrating through her fingers into the opponent's eyes and nostrils, shattering his skull.
Fatality:
EPIDEMIC: Naureth casts a curse on her opponent and afflicts him with a blight. His limbs begin to decay. When there is only a skeleton left, Naureth subdues it as well and forces it to kneel.
Fatal blow:
EXECUTIONER: Summons arms of skeletons that fly at the opponent. If they hit, fatal blow starts. After kameo, Naureth curses the ground beneath the opponent, and skeletons begin to appear from it and grab his legs. Then 4 ghostly swords fly into him, cutting off his limbs. After the opponent falls, Naureth finally chops off his head with the sword.
Brutality:
Naureth whistles, behind her slowly walks Moz, who jumps on her opponent and eats his face. UwU
Friendship:
Naureth sighs, upset, then looks down, surprised to feel Moz nuzzle against her legs. She chuckles, sits down on the ground and hugs the demon as he licks her face.
p.s. I hope it's not too edgy anyways sorry for typos and be minded that I might add some things in the future, this is like wip inspiration for the sheet, as always: @scentedcandleibex @theelderhazelnut love yah

did you already do 🌾 for moz? gimme evil mirror version moz pls 👀
oohhh i think... evil moz knows what she looks like. she knows she's small and pink and that no one is intimidated by her when they see her. she knows, and so she uses that to her advantage. she smiles and sweet talks and gets into people's good graces and when she gets there, she manipulates things to go her way. evil moz is very charismatic. she's everyone's friend, up until they prove useless, then they become close to nothing to her (never fully nothing, because they might become useful again)
evil moz doesn't care about anyone but herself, and when she becomes ruler of vegas, she gets more and more hungry for power, using her robot army to expand her reach until, eventually, she overreaches and gets assassinated :) but she manages to get quite far, i have to say. flattery can get you anywhere, after all

Two hearts beating one isn't a rare thing. Especially when two are so connected as so.
Both Nadia and Mozenrath stay seated beside each other in Mozenrath's lair, having a grand ol' time tasting their sugar lips and hearing their hearts beat as one. It was so calm, so blissful.
Then-
"And he just walked away!"
Joe and Malachite look at each other before back to their little sister with groomed eyebrows rose. "And?" Asked Joe with a shrug of his shoulders.
Nadia's face twist to a pot, "And? We've been seeing each other for a month now and it's been fine! I'm worried, is it...is it cause of me..?"
The brothers look at each other again before Malachite reached out and gently held Nadia's hands as he spoke, "Nadia, has it ever dawn on you that maybe Mozenrath is...different?" This time the girl rose a brow. "Different? Duh, he's a wizard who lives in a castle in a magic filled world and has a army of the undead and a Eel." The man chuckles, "I don't mean that. I meant in dating."
Nadia's eyebrows knit together as she thinks. She thinks back on the times they kissed and got so close to a heated kiss only for him to interrupt. She thinks back on his very rare affectionate sides . She thinks back on his awkward look down to the floor when she changed just behind the door of the room.
Mozenrath walks into Nadia's room, as per her request, his mind curiously wondering what could his princess ask all of a sudden in this summon. The man soon sat down on her soft bed, eyes wandering the room as if searching for a hint of the visit.
Luckily, he didn't have to wait for long as Nadia walks in with a paper in hand. "May I ask why I was summoned here princess?" Asked he with a soft smile. Worry consumed his chest as he sees her sit beside him not looking at him as she usually does when they're together. "Moz," Started the voice of the maiden, "You do know I like you right?"
There was a pause.
A slow weight hit Mozenrath within his mind as the words sunk in.
With a soft smile Nadia handed the paper to her partner who looked at her puzzled. "Well, I was worried that I did something wrong so I searched. Of course I had to remember in your world such things aren't really a thing you learn naturally so I thought I could help..." Mozenrath looked at the paper and spoke, "Demi-sexual?" "It's a sexual orientation like how I'm pan which means I like all genders. This is different, demisexual is someone who doesn't feel sexual attractions to others until they have a very deep and strong emotional bond between them. Sometimes they don't feel it at all."
The wizard pause as he listens. It makes sense...but-
"You...You won't leave...?"
Nadia smiles and held his hands as she spokes soft, "Mozie, you didn't leave after hearing my... adventures and still remained confident to be in a relationship with me despite that and me being mortal. A idiot will have to leave you after all that. I care so much for you to do that... We'll work through this and if in the end you don't ever want to have sex...that's okay. It's not a focus in a relationship like ours."
Nadia, Joe, and Malachite belong to @crazyyanderefangirlfan and Mozenrath belongs to Disney

THANK YOU for making a smiths ask game!!!!
if this is too much i'm sorry lol don't feel pressured but: 3, 6, 10, 15, 16, and 18 :)
Thank you for participating in the askgame!! it makes me so happy when ppl talk about how much they love the smiths aaaaah
3. Top 3 songs
I Know It's Over - is my most streamed song of all time. It has the most profound and beautiful lyrics I've ever heard, set to absolutely heartwrenching music (and in 6/8!!)
I Won't Share You - cried the first time I heard it and if I'm not careful still end up crying to this song lol. Must be the Perrier going to my head
Reel Around The Fountain - a beautiful opener that perfectly encapsulates the Smiths' sound, and dripping with gentle melancholy. i did a really rambly writeup in the past about this q here
6. Favourite music video
Does Sheila Take A Bow count? I just think everyone looks so lovely here, and JOHNNY especially just seems to be having the time of his life. If not, it's gotta be Stop Me... bc ack, moz and his army of mini-mozzes, so cute😍
10. What’s a popular song that’s not really your cup of tea?
answered here :)
15. Favourite drum part/s?
Gotta be "What She Said" for me, I don't think it's very clear in the album mix, but you can hear it really well in this live performance. I've always preferred the live versions of this song, and I think that clear audible drumline is most of the reason why.
16. Do you follow any solo work / projects that the members have taken on post-Smiths? If so, any highlights?
answered here :), tldr: love Electronic, very obsessed with Speedway (prefer the official live version but album ver is good as well!!)
18. How did you first get into The Smiths?
answered here :)
Thank you so much for the ask!!

Ian ‘Strawboss’ Garner at Heaven’s door
Pics c. Lisa Puzi
I had this image in my head of Ian, standing at the pearly gates, putting a wristband on Tina Turner. ‘Hold out your right hand’, he’d say to Tina, before she strutted through the door of Heaven. It made me smile.
I had a bond with Ian. We had a great fondness for each other. I like to think we still do, as his place in my heart reaches beyond life and death, into the immortal.
I called him ‘Boss’, after his nickname, ‘Strawboss’, a hands-on leader, but also because Boss just suited him, and he’d smile when I said it. I can still hear his warm voice in my head, telling me stories, showing me things on his phone, taking pictures, sending me messages. Like many others through that door, I was connected to him instantly, when we first met ten years ago.
This was the Ian Garner effect, fondness, gentleness, calmness. Incredible to think he was a doorman, and a good one at that, dealing with situations professionally and politely. I only saw one time he had to ‘sort things out’. He didn’t fight fire with fire, he just doused the two people with calm words, and the bother stopped. ‘Dad' had entered the room, and under his spell they did what he said and went back to their dancing.
He really loved the Mozarmy Meet, said he looked forward to it all year, to see every face and name from around the world he came to know over the decade. The best part of the Moz Meet, for me, as I’ve said many times before, was walking up to the door and seeing him there, the smile, the cuddle, the warmest welcome. I am very fond of all the Star and Garter staff, especially Andy and Gaz too, we are all good friends. But the great unsaid was Ian’s magic. He had magic around him, a sparkle of something special, a dust, and the more humble he was, the more it emanated from him, everybody knew it.
Ian also had a mischief about him. A glint in his eye. He was really fond of my sister, Louise, and she, him. I remember when Louise was driving to Glasgow to collect me from the train station, and she passed Barlinnie prison. On Facebook she checked in for a laugh, putting ‘I’m just visiting Julie’. Ian sent her a private message saying ‘What’s Julie been done for?’
During the Moz Meet, over the years, I’d run to the door a lot, to take breaks and just hang out with Ian, Andy and Gaz, a lot of the time just laughing and gassing about nothing important, the best times. Ian always had Andy take a picture of us together, then he’d send me a copy. You could clearly see the love in all those photos that he made frames for. I treasure that.
I remember when Louise had a few extra wines (all right, me too) and she lost her jacket. I said, ‘Boss! We have been absolutely everywhere looking for this jacket, can you help?’ He nipped away in a flash, two seconds later he was back, ‘Is this it?’ And it was the exact jacket we’d spent half an hour combing the place for. We stood there in daft awe, ‘How did you do that? How did you know…’ Ian Garner always knew exactly where drunk people left their jackets.
Another time he messaged Louise after she had fed a two-day out of date cheesecake to her chickens. ‘Never mind the bloody chickens’, he said, ‘I would have ate that! Your chickens get better fed than I do.’
There was a broken string of a venetian blind he spent hours re-threading, only to find it had frayed completely, and in the end he had to chuck the whole thing in the bin. There was ‘two red wines’ at the bar, ‘Your sister just got two, I think she drank both.’ There was the un-Royal family visit, when Ian came upstairs to find me and very formally said, ‘Julie. Those gentlemen we spoke about, they have arrived.’
He loved music, and we shared a favourite, ‘And She Was’ by Talking Heads. We talked of The Divine Comedy and Kate Bush, Ian loved ‘Army Dreamers’.
When he found a decent pint he talked about it like it was a new born child, or a world cup he had won, a thing of beauty, the flavour, the froth the, bubbles rising, the coldness. He was a bit of a poet about pints; fish and chips too.
Ian gave me a little Scotland pin. I’ve still got it. I still wear it. I wish we had got him the vacuum packed smokies from Arbroath that he wanted. The truth of the matter is Ian, that Louise didn’t bring them because she was afraid they’d burst on the train and she’d be ‘stinking of fishy smokies the whole way down.’
Ian was always talking of things he had uncovered, discoveries from times gone by. We had our annual in-jokes on the door when Danny Marsh asked if the Moz meet would have a ‘meat raffle’, young Dan’s (rescue) Cardboard Moz when the first one was kidnapped, ‘Where do you think it got to, Julie?’ The double outrage when Dan’s was also stolen, then the hilarity when ‘Anonymous' returned it the next day. I remember how he laughed when Andy suggested I should do a Jane Fonda style hula hooping fitness video. ‘A video would make a bomb.’
Ian Strawboss Garner was pure class, upstanding, A-list, remarkable, one in a billion gent in braces. They don’t make them like him anymore, I’m not sure they ever did. After 20 years of doing the door of The Smiths night, and the indie disco Smile night with Andy and Gaz every week, he died on 22 May, 2023, Morrissey’s birthday. That’s surely some kind of final wink from him, right there.
The last time I saw him, he was in his bed, leaving this world. I told him I loved him, and he said ‘I love you too, Julie’, words I will forever hear, and hold in my head and heart. He said, ‘It’s nice to know so many people care about me’, and they did, Ian, they really did. Even if they only met you once, I can say with hand on heart you were truly loved way beyond that door, way beyond Manchester; your smile, your kindness, your glitter flew around the world and touched every single one of us. You were a celebration of the simple beautiful things in life. You knew what mattered when the rest of us didn’t.
I’m in awe of Tracey, Ian’s daughter, thank you for putting that picture of us on the wall by his bed. Tracey has been remarkable throughout this terrible journey with her beloved dad, she is an inspiration. I want to thank Andy Martin too, for keeping me in touch, my lovely grumpy miserable but secretly wonderful pal for life who is ‘Young At Heart’, and one who Ian adored. (But he’d never say that publicly).
So I think back to that image with Boss at the door of Heaven, and then I think, maybe he's not doing the wristbands. Maybe it’s God or St Peter waving him straight in, because he’s a VIP; there's no wristband needed. And I reflect; I bet he’s got a job up there, he’s busying himself, because he never stopped working, repairing, fiddling and fixing. I know for sure he’s up there mending an angel’s wing or a strap on a Jesus sandal or a string on God’s venetian blind.
RIP Ian. How could I ever forget such a special man. I never will.

MOZ ARMY WEEKENDER – STAR & GARTER, MANCHESTER 29 APRIL 2023
Since 2011, Morrissey fans from around the world have been traveling to Manchester’s Star & Garter to dance, drink and celebrate all that is Morrissey.
The Moz Army community started on Twitter when a small band of Morrissey devotees started sharing tweets and stories. This led to the MozArmy hashtag, and a monster was born! This was the 10the event and always promised to be special with appearances from ex-Morrissey producer Stephen Street, drummer Andrew Paresi, bass-player Johnny Bridgwood as well as John Robb, The Roberts Family Band and The Salford Lads from NYC featuring Mexican Morrisey Jose Maldonado!
We drove down to Manchester on Friday night in time to arrive early Saturday morning for the annual bus tour with the wonderful Manchester Music Tours. The MozBus drives around important locations including Strangeways Prison, the Iron Bridge, and 384 Kings Road where Morrissey and Marr first met. It was a fantastic few hours, spent taking too many photos and having a laugh with our pals. I especially love visiting Salford Lads Club that featured inside the cover of The Smith’s album ‘The Queen is Dead’, an important pilgrimage for any Smiths fam.
Special mention to the Gill family who run Manchester Music Tours. The company was initially founded by Craig Gill, drummer of Inspiral Carpets but the tours are now led by Craig’s wife Rose following Craig’s untimely death in 2016. Craig and the Gill family will always be an important part of the MozArmy community.
The main event takes place in the Star & Garter pub that hosts the longest running Smiths Disco. On Saturday night we had the pleasure of Jonny Bridgwood playing bass with The Salford Lads, a fantastic Smiths/Morrissey tribute band from New York. Johnny wrote and played bass on 3 Morrissey albums including his rock-a-billy days and he also worked with Siouxsie Sioux and Adam Ant. It was amazing to hear him talk about some of the bass lines that I’ve been listening to for almost 30 years and seeing the joy in being on stage. I tried to stay cool when I was talking to him but the fan boy in me had other ideas.
There was also an impromptu interview with Jaime Harding, lead singer of Marion. Jaime has had addiction problems and it’s great to see him doing well. He sang ‘Let’s All Go Together’ on his own and I had goose-bumps. Jaime is an incredibly talented singer and it’s amazing to see him do well. John Robb also made an appearance to talk about his new book ‘The Art of Darkness – A History of Goth’.
To warm the crowd up for The Salford Lads were The Roberts Family Band who entertained the audience with Smiths and Morrissey classics. They are the loveliest people and amazing that Jeff and Tess’s girls are only 13 and 15. Such a talented family and the nicest people you could ever hope to meet.
It was an amazing night, and it would be wrong to write this without mentioning Julie Hamill. Julie is a author, radio DJ and all-round lovely lady. She is the fuel that drives the MozArmy community, and the work that she puts into organising and publicising these weekends is incredible. She organises the best weekend of the year, and this year was no different and we’re so pleased to call Julie a friend. There is always so much love and joy in the room and as the hangovers disappear, we’re already thinking about next year.
5 stars, always 5 stars.

Description: An eye-opening and intimate memoir about life as an international humanitarian aid worker in the field in Rwanda, Sudan, Sierra Leone, and Haiti. Jessica Alexander arrived in Rwanda in the aftermath of the genocide as an idealist intern, excited to be a part of the international humanitarian aid community. But the world that she encountered in the field was dramatically different than anything she could have imagined. In this honest and irreverent memoir, she introduces readers to the reality of the life of an aid worker. We watch as she helps to resettle refugees in Rwanda, manages a 24,000-person camp in Darfur, and helps a former child soldier in Sierra Leone get rid of a tattoo that was carved into his skin by a rebel group. But we also see the alcoholic parties and fleeting romances, the burnouts and cyncism, the plans and priorities that constantly shift and change. Tracing her personal journey from idealistic and naïve newcomer to hardened cynic to hopeful but critical realist, Alexander transports readers to some of the most troubled locations and shows us not only the impossible challenges, but also the moments of hope and recovery. Review: It was a pretty decent book that gave the reader some insight into the situations in Darfur, Haiti, and Sierra Leone from the perspective of a humanitarian aid worker. You'll understand why the help offered is rarely helpful at all, and good intentions is really a double edged sword. There's some good, a lot of bad, a lot of stress, confusion, and a system rigged to fail for the most part. But there's also the human element, and the people that are affected at every level make this a story worth reading.

Back on the chain gang- Morrissey
youtube
I found a picture of you, oh oh oh oh
What hijacked my world that night
To a place in the past
We've been cast out of? Oh oh oh oh
Now we're back in the fight
We're back on the train
Oh, back on the chain gang
A circumstance beyond our control, oh oh oh oh
The phone, the TV and the news of the world
Got in the house like a pigeon from hell, oh oh oh oh
Threw sand in our eyes and descended like flies
Put us back on the train
Oh, back on the chain gang
The powers that be
That force us to live like we do
Bring me to my knees
When I see what they've done to you
But I'll die as I stand here today
Knowing that deep in my heart
They'll fall to ruin one day
For making us part
I found a picture of you, oh oh oh oh
Those were the happiest days of my life
Like a break in the battle was your part, oh oh oh oh
In the wretched life of a lonely heart
Now we're back on the train
Oh, back on the chain gang

Bio: Naureth comes from a secretive family of hereditary witches from medieval Europe who long ago found a connection to the Netherrealm. For decades, the women of the family fed their powers from there, in exchange for sacrifices and loyalty to demonic forces. They have, for the most part, kept their blood pure, remaining human. If necessary - they were infiltrated into politics and the church, at the behest of the Netherrealm demons and the current ruler.
Wanting to live longer than the rest of their family, the aging high witch of the cult - Ongran decided to sacrifice her granddaughter in order to get a longer life. Naureth was about seventeen years old at the time. She had inherited the ability to see the souls of the dead who had fallen in battles on Earthrealm. After performing a ritual, half of Naureth's heart was desiccated and forever chained to Netherrealm, transferring half of her life time to Ongran. Deeply hurt and maddened, Naureth decided to run away from her family, in search of greater powers, so she can get revenge on her Grandmother.
Fueled by rage, Naureth travelled the Netherrealm for 5 years. Looking for artifacts, trying to find anything that can fuel her powers, until she met Jataaka, who brought her into the Brotherhood of Shadows, where Naureth found her sorcery mentors.
After Naureth joins the Brotherhood of Shadows, she becomes a follower of Shinnok and apprentice to Quan Chi. After several years of training, she masters necromancy, decay magic, and undead mind control. When Shinnok decides she is ready, he sends her on a mission to dethrone Ongran as supreme witch, get revenge and lead the cult to serve him and Quan Chi.
With the help of Jataaka and Sareeena and Kia, Naureth kills the witch, but the life forces do not return to Naureth, leaving her with half of her life still shortened.
Dying, her grandmother remarks that she is proud of Naureth, but Naureth is outraged. The cult joins forces with Quan Chi's army, and she marches off to Shinnok.
Shinnok, says that only under his command will she be able to live longer, and bestows the black crown of Ongran, powers that can extend her life, making her life almost infinite as long as the crown is on her. Of course this was a lie, he could give her life back, as it was sealed in Netherrealm. Without knowing it, Naureth simply stays in the brotherhood. Quan Chi appoints her captain of the undead squad along with the witches from her cult.
