I'm a huge fan of both Mo Willems and comfort objects, so today's book was a no-brainer. This week at the Read With River Book Club we're sharing books on fear in its various forms, and the Caldecott-winning "Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale" (2004) is one of my favourite books about the fear of losing something that you count on, and of being unable to communicate your needs clearly...both of which are BIG THEMES with tiny humans. 🐇🐇🐇 In "Knuffle Bunny", toddler Trixie loses her beloved bunny at the laundromat, but cannot speak yet to convey the reason for her distress to her dad. The resolution will make you sigh with happy relief. And the artwork!! Cartoon-style drawings over real-life images of New York City bring the story very much to life. There's nothing lovelier than appreciating a little variety in life! And I've loved Mo Willems's "Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed" (2009) from the very first time I read it for precisely that reason. Well, and because it's a fun story too, of course! 📚📚📚 When we're first introduced to Wilbur, a naked mole rat breaking all of his community's taboos by reveling in his love of clothes, it seems like Willems could go in one of two obvious directions with the story: he could laud Wilbur's brazen individuality, or push the notion of compromising for tradition's sake. Instead, in a bold move worthy of Wilbur, the author chooses to embrace BOTH, reminding us that it is okay to be the person who likes to be different, but there's also nothing wrong with those who are more comfortable doing what's familiar.
