Sorry if you've been asked this before, but I couldn't find any posts about it. What are Catalan movies you'd recommend? Not matter if there is a translation or not

Salvador (Puig Antich) (2006), dir. Manuel Huerga. (In Catalan and Spanish). A real story about the events that led to the execution of Salvador Puig Antich, a young Catalan anarchist who was the last political prisoner sentenced to death by the Francoist dictatorship, in 1974. (Available on Filmin).

Herois [Heroes] (2010), dir. Pau Freixas. The protagonist remembers the best summer of his childhood, with a plot that runs parallel to her present. A beautiful and nostalgic film about friendship, adventure, first love, and memories that can move you to affect the present. (Available on Prime Video and Filmin).

Pa negre [Black Bread] (2010), dir. Agustí Villaronga. Cinema adaptation of best-selling books by Emili Teixidor, it starts with a murder. From there, it's a dark drama and mystery story that focuses on the relations between family members in a village in 1940, the post-war period, through the eyes of a child. (Available on Filmin).

Fènix 11·23 (2012), dir. Joel Joan. This drama movie tells the real story of Èric Bertran, a 14-year-old Catalan boy who was arrested for terrorism for having sent an email in 2004. (Available on Filmin, can be rented on AppleTV).

Barcelona, nit d'estiu [Barcelona, summer night] (2013), dir. Dani de la Orden. Romantic comedy of six love stories that meet on a summer night. It was very successful and has a sequel called Barcelona, nit d'hivern [Barcelona, winter night] (2015). (Available for free on RTVE Play).

El mètode Grönholm [The Grönholm Method] (2015). TV movie adaptation of a comedy theatre play, a group of aspirants meet for a job interview but are asked to do very unconventional things. As time goes on, they see that maybe there were more secrets between the characters than there seemed. It's funny and unexpected. (Available for free on TV3 a la carta).

Incerta Glòria [Uncertain Glory] (2017), dir. Agustí Villaronga. Cinema adaptation of the best-seller book by Joan Sales, it's the story of three friends who fought against Franco in the Spanish Civil War and who are in love with the same woman. (Available on Netflix).

Estiu 1993 [Summer 1993] (2017), dir. Carla Simón. A 6-year-old girl has to move in with her aunt, uncle and cousin after her parents die. Even though she is welcomed and treated well, she has difficulty adapting to her new life. This is an artistic film that was even selected for the Oscars, but be aware that it's one of the most "European artsy cinema"-style ones here. (Available for free under the Spanish name "Verano 1993" on RTVE Play).

Jean-François i el sentit de la vida [Jean-François and the Meaning of Life] (2018), dir. Sergi Portabella. A lonely 13-year-old boy finds a copy of The Myth of Sisyphus by the French philosopher Albert Camus and decides to run away to Paris to meet him, not knowing he's dead. On the way, he meets a girl who will accept to run away with him but has her own motives. (Available on Filmin and for free on RTVE Play).

El nom [The Name] (2018), dir. Joel Joan. Movie adaptation of a comedy theatre play, five friends meet for dinner and talk about two of them who will soon have a child. The witty chatter becomes a fight when the father-to-be says the child will be called "Adolf, like that man with the moustache". (Available for free on TV3 a la carta).

La vampira de Barcelona [The Barcelona Vampiress] (2020), dir. Lluís Danés. A dark story once again based on a real one. In the early 20th-century Barcelona, the investigation on a mentally-unstable woman accused of kidnapping children to sell them or harvest their organs will take a journalist through the poorest streets, brothels and secrets of the Raval quarter. (TW for child abuse & sexual assault. Not a happy film but it's worth watching). (Available on Movistar+).

Alcarràs (2022), dir. Carla Simón. Filmed not with professional actors but with the real inhabitants of Alcarràs whose story is being told, this film shows the story of a family of farmers. After generations of working the same fields, they are told they must leave because the land will be confiscated to install solar panels. A realistic rural drama about the loss of agriculture, based on the real experiences of rural people in Western Catalonia. This film has received many international awards and won the Berlinale Film Festival, but once again be aware it's probably the most "European artistic cinema" film of this list. (Can be rented on many services).

I've added what streaming platform they're in for an international audience (though sometimes it changes country to country), but if you have a library card from Catalonia they're available for free on the digital platform ebibliocat.efilm.info.

Help a CARAT! Please read!

So uh, I don’t know if anyone will read this (probably not) but I guess I’ll give it a try since i know it could help. Well as I said in a post over a month ago, I lost my internet service provider. I live in a neighborhood outside of my city, Cartagena in Colombia. It’s a government project so all houses here were subsidized by them because these families situation.

Right now I use mobile data packages. $1.50 usd and I have free use of twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp for six days + 340 MB’s for navigation (those are which I’m using to post this).

Our ISP was subsidized by the government too and it was the only one with network here. It was called ‘Total Play’. Other ISP’s in the city like Claro, Movistar or Tigo don’t have network around here. My brother is starting his college semester soon and classes will be online so we’re very worried about that too. The thing is, we found an alternative: satellite internet connection.

A very few people here have it already. But, it’s very expensive. Too expensive to afford right now because my job temporary suspended me (I work at the airport) and my mom does enough with the bills and food. We have to pay for the installment of the equipment and then pay for the service of the first month in advance. We only want to achieve at least the payment for the installment and the first month. We will worry for the next months when it’s time. Right now we need $100.000 Colombian pesos for the installment of the equipment and $100.000 Colombian pesos for the first month service that have to be payed in advance. It’s around 65 USD for all. (Dollar value changes here every day but right now 1 dollar is around 3.500 Colombian pesos).

For some of you it might not look like a lot because dollar works different here. gathering that kind of money right now is very very difficult for us. I want to ask if you have any money to spare to please considerate donate it for this. My brother and I would be forever grateful. Even one dollar can make a huge difference for us.

This might seem frivolous. Wanting money to get internet. I know a lot of people is struggling to get food and health care and here I am asking help for something like this. If you think it’s wrong please just skip this. I know it seems like it’s not something we need to live (and we don’t) But at this point my brother and I are getting desperate. His father doesn’t help him and we can’t ask my mom for more than she does already. He is starting classes soon and if we don’t fix this he might not be able to do it. Also, we don’t have cable tv (again) because we can’t afford it but we were okay with it before because we had internet and we’d just search online if we want to watch something. But now we have to stick to the regular tv which actually sucks so that + being quarantined is getting to our mental health. At least with internet we’d find stuff to do.

I miss tumblr. And now that I have a lot of free time I feel awful that I can’t help Seventeen in streaming and voting just because I don’t have WiFi. I can’t afford albums right now for obvious reasons but I thought I could help with the online stuff. Right now I can’t even do that and it feels not good. especially since in twitter everyone is trying to tell you how much your value as a fan lays in the hours you spend streaming. I hope I can go back to work soon but the pandemic situation in my country isn’t looking much better than the rest of the world and well, airports might not open anytime soon.

I’m gonna… With due respect, I’m gonna take my mask off but just to be able to talk, we are maintaining a safe distance on the stage. The fourth and final season of Skam, an original production of Movistar + along with Zeppelin. And here, on stage, and in Digital Studio we have with us all main characters of this fourth season. We have - I’m gonna be reading bit by bit everyone that’s gonna be here, by the way, thanks to all the fans that are watching us live, we’ll say goodbye to you later, for the press conference, but thank you for being there and following the show. We have with us the two brains that make Skam so cool. We have… We have Rafa Taboada and Begoña Álvarez. Begoña Álvarez is the… I wanna read it correctly: “director and executive producer of Zeppelin”. Welcome, thank you a lot.

Begoña: Thanks a lot.

Iñaki: Let’s see, we’re always gonna be doing the…

Iñaki: We have Rafa Taboada, colleague in Movistar, executive producer of the show. How are you?

Rafa: Really excited to be here. I only have to add that there are a lot more brains that make Skam possible, and a lot more important than me. Not more important than Begoña, but more than me. A lot of people from Movistar have poured a lot of love into the show, and a lot of people from Zeppelin and the producers have been working very hard in this four seasons and have made possible us being here, because we started in smaller rooms than today’s.

Iñaki: Well, there are more than two brains then. Okay? And, of course, if you have taken a closer look in the master shot from the crane, here we have Skam four protagonists. We have - wave with the hand and take down the thing, okay, so people see you at home and know you are for real - we have: Irene Ferreiro, Cris in the show.

Iñaki: No, no, here you are the important one. Are you alright?

Iñaki: Well, we’ve run through the lineup of everyone that’s going to be in the presentation of this fourth and last season of Skam, and now… Well, we’ve been seeing the trailer, well, I wasn’t allowed to do it, but… They have been watching the trailer, in the backstage, and they screamed a lot. Let’s go with the Season 4 trailer.

Iñaki: That’s… That’s the season 4 trailer. The cast started dancing here… Hajar Brown, the season 4 main character, let’s talk for a bit, okay? Because… The fans of the show already know this, but this last season follows Hajar’s character. Let’s see, what can you tell us about the character? Without spoilers, I’m very scrupulous with these things!

Hajar: Shut it, I… I feel like my face is already a spoiler, so I’m really scared, let’s see what I say, but I’ll be cautious.

Iñaki: Of course, it’s a spoiler…

Hajar: Really, my eyes can tell you all the plot…

Iñaki: How have… how have you taken in your character, for this 4th season?

Hajar: Ummm… I thought it was gonna be way easier than it turned out to be, to be honest, basically because supposedly we’ve already been knowing Amira this last 2 years, supposedly… yeah, that, I’m… The plot…

*Iñaki shushes*

Hajar: See, see? What I was saying…

Iñaki: I was seeing you, I was seeing you doing it.

Hajar: I knew it, and that’s what my mother said to me, like “don’t talk too much because you will spoil something”.

Iñaki: Well, if you want… What has the character meant for you, Hajar?

Hajar: Ummm… Well, a challenge. Like, I’ve always said this, I’ve always believed strongly in this, and I’ve always needed and wanted role models similar to me, that would go… I don’t know, similar to me, with my fight, with… with my stuff, and being myself the one that has had to step forward well, it’s… it’s an honour making… making this show, like this, and with these people, like, the best.

Iñaki: I’m not gonna ask you any more questions, okay? To… To avoid… Because I already saw you before that you were this close.

Hajar: Yeah, yeah, I’m really a blabbermouth.

Iñaki: Hajar, really good. Really good. Hajar is gonna be the season four main character, and then, also, thank you Hajar, we have, in Digital Studio, Lucas, that plays Dani in the show, and that is gonna gain a lot of weight in this fourth season. I’m not spoiling anything with this, right Begoña, Rafa?

Lucas: Well… If in the second season we saw him more protective, more… more like a big brother, more… helper, now… now I think that stuff’s gonna happen that he’s gonna want to live, and that will make him be more vulnerable, more… more overflowing with emotions, and with desires, and, well, we’ll see a funnier, tender, clumsier Dani. That’s what I think it’s gonna happen.

Iñaki: Even more tender?

Lucas: Even more tender.

Let’s see, I’m gonna get comfortable because I suffered the third season a lot, because, even if you don’t believe me, and even if I have a beard with a lot of gray areas, I watch the show with my cousin María, and we talk about it via messaging, via Whatsapp, and so. Nicole: Yes?

Iñaki: Nicole. Celia. Why? Why everything? Why the money from the trip to Mallorca? I understand it

Nicole: It was… I think one of the seasons… at least for me, obviously, because *laughs* I was the one with the most weight in it, but… I enjoyed it a lot and… and then, seeing each other after (all that’s happened) was… now it’s really sad, cause I’m really sad that I won’t be able to see them anymore, but… but good.

Celia: Yeah

Iñaki: And Celia, what about you?

Celia: The same thing. Really nice and… oooof, I never want to step away from this, I swear.

Iñaki: I’ve won two awards during my life, two, and I’m not gonna say what they were for, they are not important, okay?

Celia: Okay

Nicole: Perfect

Iñaki: One was “Mister Friendliness” in High School, that’s it, okay? How did you see the award that you won… that was won at the festival, the Equality award?

Nicole: Well, I was in Málaga with some friends when we… found out… when I found out, and it was amazing, to be honest

Celia: Yeah

Nicole: I think that was the best award they could’ve given us.

Celia: Yes

Nicole: Really cool. I didn’t see it coming at all, at least for my part. It was so sudden, also in the middle of… it had already finished, there was nothing on air, that suddenly they were giving it to us, it was cool.

Celia: Yes. In all honesty, it was unexpected and an honour.

Iñaki: For the ones that have been living under a rock, I’m gonna read why are they giving them the award, conceded by CIMA, the “Association of Filmmaker Women”, for contributing in extending the feminist values among young audiences, which is really important. But don’t make me suffer, okay?

Celia: I’m sorry

Iñaki: Does the fourth (season) make me suffer?

Nicole: It depends. It depends on what is suffering for you *laughs* No, no, I don’t think so. No, no, it’s not our turn to do so. It’s time for other people to do so

Iñaki: Shut up!!!

Nicole: Everybody suffers

Iñaki: No! No! Everybody suffers, okay, you saved it. Let’s go with Digital Studio, cause we have Fernando on the other side… Fernando, my buddy, Fernando! What’s gonna happen with your character, with Alejandro, because at the end of the third (season) we left him a bit…

Fernando: Yes hehe. Well, I can’t tell you exactly what’s… what’s gonna happen with Alejandro, but… I think… I think Alejandro’s character has evolved a lot during the show’s runtime. Like, at the beginning you could see Alejandro more concerned about his appearance and… and conditioned by the leadership he had within his group of friends. I think… I think that this season, the last one, is gonna be very interesting, to see the evolution from a teenager to a mature youth that… that shows openly his sensibility and… and his simplicity.

Iñaki: Fuck… Applaud, applaud!

Irene: Bravo, bravissimo

Nicole: Olé, handsome!

Celia: Really good

Iñaki: I’m not gonna ask you anything more, dude, like… you explained it perfectly. You did it perfectly

Celia: Yes, yes

Irene: Okay, I know what that look means.

Iñaki: Do you know… You and Tamara… and I, we form a special triangle, because in one of the initiatives of Movistar+, I had to narrate your pool kiss.

*Irene laughs*

Irene: It’s true! I’d forgotten about that. I loved it.

Iñaki: I mean, we have a relationship that… we saw each other today and there was a connection, with the whole cast too.

Iñaki: Well, what’s going to happen to Cris this season? Generally speaking.

Irene: Yeah, no spoilers. I don’t know, I mean Cris has evolved a lot, I think, and she still has to keep evolving, she’s going to face some challenges, in her friendships and her relationship and, let’s see how she deals with it.

Iñaki: Well… Pff you can’t say anything, really. *girls laugh*

Irene: I’ll tell you later.

Iñaki: I was going to push her for more information but we’ll spoil the whole season. In the second season, there was a character with a big role, apart from Irene. Joana, the character named Joana, in Digital Studio. We have Tamara and Alex Reina, Joana and Lucas on the show. Skam’s boom, let’s have Tamara answer first and then Alex, how has Skam’s boom been for you? First season was a big deal, but the second… and don’t get me started on the third. How has this been for you?

Tamara: It’s crazy. I remember when they told me about the show I was playing in Austin, and when I came back everything had blown up already and it was like “oh, ok, perfect”. And then when the season came out, people loved it so much, it was so crazy. I remember when the kiss was trending, we were all freaking out. Very cool. What do you want me to say? Everything was perfect. *laughs*

Iñaki: And you, Alex?

Alex: I think that the first season, it was like watching it all from a little window, we were all like, hidden, no one knew who we were, and everything was a secret because of the format, and when it came out we all freaked out. I mean, the fans’ reaction was incredible. We were all very happy and we are very happy right now. We have constant support.

Iñaki: Would you like to send a message to the fans?

Alex: That we love them, as always, and thank you so much for being there and we are so happy that they can watch this season, because, with everything that’s happened, everything has been on hold and so we’re twice as happy that it’s coming out and people can watch it. Everything’s great, really.

Iñaki: Tamara, a message for the fans.

Tamara: The same, I’m awestruck by Alex, I love him so much. Wise words. *laughs*

Iñaki: It’s so cool what you have. It’s just like how you are in the show. Thank you guys, really. It’s been really cool talking to you. Thank you, Irene. Protagonists of the second season. Before, we have talked about the possibility of us talking to the protagonist of the first season, with Alba. She’s not here in the studio because she’s busy. She’s busy… Alba, for the people who are just tuning in, what are you doing? Where are you?

Alba: Well, look. I’m here, inside a trailer, because I’m filming, can’t say what, but…

Iñaki: Are you filming a movie?

Alba: Yes.

Iñaki: So, from being the person that… your character being, in the first season, the one that breaks the ice; to filming a movie. Not bad, right? The jump.

Alba: No, it’s been super cool, plus, we started the first season like, holding Begoña’s hands like, please don’t let go. And I think that Bego, Tapi, the other director, the whole team, have sheltered us so much and showed us this path that has made possible that, now, each of us can start making our own way, and I’m super grateful, honestly.

Hajar: Aw, we love you!

Alba: I love you so much.

Iñaki: Alba, tell us something about your character in this season, without spoilers. I’m getting really serious about this, like an annoying teacher.

Alba: Ok, so, I don’t think I can spoil anything because I’ve already forgotten everything that we’ve filmed. But, I think that Eva is still having a great time, she’s going to go back a bit to the Eva of the first season, and she’ll mess up a bit, can’t say how.

Iñaki: But she’ll mess up like… sorry, like the first season? Or more?

Alba: No, a bit different, maybe with less tears, but yeah, different.

Let’s see, I don’t want to leave anything out. First, the award. We’ve been talking with Nicole… the award. The award that CIMA grants to Equality… for all the good and positivity of the show, how do you feel?

Begoña: Happy, proud, because we’re super grateful to CIMA, the “Association of Filmmaker Women”, that they’ve taken notice of a show like this, because it’s where we’ve put our focus on, specially on the third season, talking about toxic relationships and how easy it is to get into them and how hard it is to get out, and throughout the seasons we’ve tried to tell the stories of these girls with a feminist message, with empathy, sisterhood … very powerful. So it was very exciting and coming from that association that we love… We’re very happy.

Iñaki: Begoña, how… I mean, the ages of the… because I’m looking at them

Begoña: It doesn’t matter.

Iñaki: The ages of the team… it’s insulting. The cast is really young, how is it to work with such a young ensemble?

Begoña: It’s a rush, really. We’ve gone through some things, from them calling us “mom” or “teacher”...

Iñaki: What?

Begoña: I swear

Iñaki: Let’s stop right there, people like us, of a certain age, if you call us, this goes to you too (the audience), Mr or Mrs, the formal “you”, we don’t like that, ok?

Begoña: It’s tough

Iñaki: Who thought of “teacher”?

Begoña: None of them, it was Gonzalo, Dilan, who’s the youngest, the “teacher” thing happened a few times. But working with people so young is wonderful, because we’ve learned, we’ve all stepped up thanks to them, and it’s been really fun.

Iñaki: And how has it been for you, the evolution of the show in these two years?

Begoña: With a lot of joy and excitement, we’ve put so much into this show and we have a very small team, both the Zeppelin team and the Movistar team, the cast, it’s a small group of people doing something that’s very big. So, watching it grow, and watching them grow, literally, these two years, and how it’s been gaining importance and it’s transcending in the media and with the audience, the fans, it’s very satisfactory. Because it tells something very beautiful and very important. So, satisfactory, is the word.

Iñaki: It’s true, that’s the truth. Umm… Rafa

Rafa: Tell me

Iñaki: How… How do you feel being part of a team this cool, and that’s promoting such important stuff?

Rafa: First of all, fortunate of being able to be on a team this diverse, with so many points of view, and… I feel, as I said, fortunate of working in fiction that not only entertains, but that also leaves messages and some streaks of learning for those that want to catch them or detect them.

Iñaki: Why did you decide to tackle Skam?

Rafa: Well… Skam… We were all big fans of the original version, of the Norwegian show

Iñaki: Norwegian

Rafa: And we thought it was the perfect show to agglutinate the elements that we were interested in or the ones we wanted to tackle, a real show about teenagers and that lifestage, that approaches with respect their interests and conflicts, and… and also that it does so from an interest, peeping out of a window, seeing how they interact, how is the world, how… how do they see everyday problems, how they get over them… It’s not very easy to agglutinate those elements when you start making a show, and Skam gave us the really sturdy structure of a format that had them and had already worked.

Iñaki: And how did Covid affect… Because, we are wearing masks here in the presentation, we maintain a safe distance, that is a thing all of you watching have to do, always the mask on, I take it off to speak, but… How did all of that affect the show?

Rafa: Well, like everyone, we had to… we had to stop, we came back when we could, and format-wise, in what affects the broadcasting, I think before we go in depth talking about that, the cast can explain it better than anyone.

Rafa: Well, we are going back to Amira’s story as if a pandemic hadn’t happened. I think that… We’ve all lost things due to the pandemic, like having to be here with more distance, with masks… But all of this is to try to enjoy what came before, and there’s so much stuff that the pandemic has stolen us, for some, in the worst case scenario, even loved ones. We thought Skam could be a small stronghold in this pandemic we’re going through, going backwards and seeing all that a generation, or some, have lost. Skam is gonna portray it how it should have been, and how we would like to be again, to remember for a bit what’s the objective, why are we struggling, why are we putting masks on, and why we have to be responsible, to go back to what we had before, that is very worthwhile.

Interview with Estíbaliz Burgaleta

Interview with Estíbaliz Burgaleta, head writer for SKAM España

Estíbaliz Burgaleta is a script writer (SKAM España, Cable Girls, Morocco: Love in Times of War, Seis Hermanas, Velvet), writer (The Winner Takes It All, Loser), short film director (Bichos Raros, Mañana, La Leonera), webseries showrunner (Cataclismo), and script writing professor (Gona Estudios in Oviedo, Fiction Script Writing Master’s Degree at ECAM). As prolific as she is versatile, in her career she has alternated between melodrama and comedy, science fiction and teen shows, weekly shows and daily soaps, script pages and literature. If that weren’t enough, she blogs at Bichos Raros. She did Media Studies in Navarra and Script Writing at ECAM. She currenly heads the writer’s room for the Spanish remake of the Norwegian show SKAM, which is produced by Zeppelin and airs on Movistar. We’ve taken this opportunity to talk about this remake and, while we’re at it, try and find out how to do so many things and all of them well.

Estíbaliz, in your career you’ve done many things: television scripts, short films written and directed by you, the webseries Cataclismo, you’ve recently published two novels, you also teach… Is it a way to understand the job?

It’s more a way not to get bored, to try new trades, to pass the time when you’re in “between projects” (that is to say, unemployed), and also, to keep learning. For instance, when you shoot a short film you learn about the many things that can go wrong in the process of turning a script page into images. And writing novels it’s a way for me to do whatever I want, without having to be limited by network interference, or head writer interference, or scheduling problems with the actors, or anything like that. Actually, every project is a result of a specific moment in time because, right now, I wouldn’t direct short films for anything. Although who knows, never say never.

Season two of SKAM España just premiered, and you were also head writer for season one. What was your biggest challenge when you got started, and what was the biggest challenge when it came to season two?

Every time you start a TV show there’s a feeling of starting from zero. When it came to SKAM España, besides, we were a team who didn’t know each other beforehand. And, since it’s a remake, we had to decide to what point we were going to be faithful to the Norwegian show, which features we were going to keep and which ones we weren’t. We decided we couldn’t copy SKAM shot per shot, especially when other remakes were so faithful. We realized there was no sense in offering more of the same. The challenge in season one consisted in not disappointing SKAM fans, to be faithful to the tone of SKAM and to tackle the same topics: bullying, loss of your childhood friends, loneliness and the need to belong somewhere… but adding plot twists that fans of the original series wouldn’t see coming.

SKAM España season two goes down a different path than the original. What made you take this decision?

In addition to knowing from the start that it made no sense to offer a copy of the original show, we also noticed a desire, on the part of teenage audiences, to see a romantic love story, an iconic story, but where the characters were girls. In the Spanish audiovisual landscape, there are many stories that reflect the process of coming out by a boy, but we were missing something like that with a teenage girl, a referent for all these girls who are in the process of figuring themselves out and need to see themselves represented on screen.

What differences do you notice in a show like this, so dependent on real time, its audience and internet use, compared to other more classic offerings, such as Morocco: Love in Times of War, in which you also took part?

SKAM España is very different from other shows, from conception to format. It can be watched like a normal series, in episode format and weekly on Movistar, but it can also be watched on the website in real time and with additional information, such as the characters’ messages and the pictures they upload to their social media. That results in a different way to work, even the format of the scripts is different, because we include the Whatsapp chats and characters’ instagrams. That said, when it comes down to it, I think every show has its own rules, thus that feeling I mentioned earlier about starting from zero every time you come into a new project. When it comes to Morocco: Love in Times of War, we delved into the Rif War and we tried to research not just the era itself, but also medicine, military strategy…

What do you do to capture today’s teen slang? And, in general, to reflect teens properly.

This is one of the aspects in which SKAM España differs from other shows I’ve worked on. I had never in my life gone to rehearsals with the actors and in this show I’ve been able to and it’s super funny. This helps us in the process of reflecting the way they talk. Besides, the series directors [translator note: Begoña Álvarez and Tapi Ayerra] go through the effort of ensuring the cast makes the script theirs and inserts the slang that feels more natural to them during shooting. It ends up being contagious, and everyone in the crew has started saying things like “me renta mazo, tío.” I, personally, love the verb “stalkear” [translator note: from English, stalking] and I already use it daily. It means to look someone up on the internet to find out everything you can about that person, without them knowing, that is. I should also mention that before we wrote the series, there was field work done with psychologists, who interviewed teens aged 15 to 20, to find out what they worry about, their interests, the way they see life. Again, this was something I’d never done before for any other project, and it was really helpful.

Do you think they worry about the same things people of our generation worried about?

Resoundingly yes. They’re worried about their grades, what other people think of them, what they’ll do in the future, what they look like physically, fitting in. The feeling they repeated the most often in the interviews with the psychologists was “feeling overwhelmed.” They’re aware that they live in a crucial time in which they must make huge decisions, and most of them feel lost. What changes the most in this generation compared to ours is the tech. Cellphones, social media and the internet are part of their daily lives, and it’s manifest. But I think my generation, if we’d had today’s tech, would have behaved the same way with their obsession with self image, for instance, or with control and social media “stalking.” Then there are other details, such as fashion or music, that change, clearly for the worse. Because, let’s be real, was it really necessary for the fanny pack to make a comeback? Trap music is also something which escapes me and makes me feel like an old lady. Grunge was so much cooler.

What do you think about the golden age of TV, this boom? Do you think it’s a bubble or a progression that will continue going up?

I’m sorry to be a little fatalistic, but I have the feeling it’s a bubble. When it comes down to it, the number of viewers is what it is, and the budget to produce shows isn’t bottomless. But I hope I’m wrong and this lasts a long, long time. Just in case, I would recommend all the script writers to start saving.

You have also worked a lot as writer or head writer on daily soaps, such as SMS, Ciega a Citas or Seis Hermanas. What did you learn from these shows?

You learn so much on a daily soap, you develop a savage ability to work and savage reflexes. The dialogue team has to come out with five or six scripts per week, the rundown team has to come out with five or six rundowns. The crew works like an assembly line where you can never, ever take a break, or you fall behind airing date. I like that adrenaline rush. Besides, it’s precisely because the schedule is so tight that you get to see your work on screen quickly and with less changes that when you take part on a weekly show where the schedule extends over time, and there are so many edits to the script that in the end what you see on TV has very little to do with what you wrote.

Excluding SKAM España, what is the show you have learned or enjoyed the most from when writing it?

I have a very good time writing Cable Girls, because it’s a show where many genres fit: intrigue, romance, melodrama and even some humor. I enjoyed working on Ciega a Citas a lot because we did some really weird storylines, the vibe of the show allowed us to get even surrealistic and that’s always nice. With Seis Hermanas and Morocco: Love in Times of War, I delved into the early 20th century. And, since I love history, I loved being able to research.

And lastly, what do you think of female representation on TV?

I think we still have a long road ahead when it comes to female representation. I miss more women and, of course, older women and fat women, really ugly women or average ones. I’m a little fed up with all these women under 30 taking their clothes off for no reason. Even in “Love, Death & Robots,” which is an animated show, they have a healthy dose of topless girls. I think this is a result of both there still being more men in TV crews and the dominating gaze still being male. When it comes to “women’s” media, it’s more of a brand to help sell a product than a reality. I’ve found myself working in what were theoretically women’s shows (romantic melodrama, with female protagonists) where I was the only female writer. There won’t be any changes in the audiovisual landscape until there exists more parity in the crew. In addition to that, it’s still commonplace to check the credits of a series or a movie and find they’re a complete dickfest.

Not hard to be a ‘pro’ women rider because there is no money in it so instantly you only have an extreme minority of women who want to dedicate their life to something that pays only a few thousand dollars are year for flights and basic hotels. Ive never met a womens pro (Ive known a lot of them the last 20 years) who ever earned enough each week to pay their own rent. They are always supported by their parents or husbands or work part time. I remember doing a few rides with Rachel Neylan back in 2007 and told her she could be a gun cyclist. She said to me ‘do you think so??’ and I said ‘100%. She went on to get second at the world road champs but never made any money from it and had to work part time as a physio to fund herself even though she was one of the best womens riders in the world. Same with Cromwell, Taylor, Burns, Rhodes etc. Gun riders who started out as noobs and went right up to the top with the constant support of their parents but both never earned enough money to buy a house etc or even pay rent. They always lived at home when they came back to oz.Then you have local guys like Bobridge who equally talented but because they are male they make fucking bank and buy houses and cars in the first/second year contract lol. 4. If you want to make money as a pro sports women DON’T choose cycling or running. Go with tennis, tennis and tennis.

5. Big T wont ever win many big field races because tactics are so important and there is nobody who is going to take time out to show her how to learn those race tactics. Ive watched a few races over the years and even the pro women do stupid shit in races and Im like ‘who the fuck is guiding these women?? lol’. When I started racing I had a really cool bunch of vet riders who knew the race craft and who would pull me aside and tell me what I did wrong. That generation is totally gone now in the amateur scene. Why? Just because there is so many snotty nosed rich kid brats that show zero gratitude so nobody really wants to help them from the old guard. Those really helpful guys are all 60-70 and burn out or passed away. That is why Orica does so well because you have old skool crew like Matt White who can give the noob riders the inside tips. Same with Quickstep and Lefevere. He is a gold mine of race tactics and mentality. Unzué with Movistar etc etc.

You have a super motor BUT if you don’t hardcore race support then you never going to get anywhere in cycle racing and if you do become world champ then you MIGHT earn a bit more than your average Aussie K mart employee who works in better conditions and doesn’t end with massive scars on their elbows, knees and hips.

1. just caught up on a ton of social media posts, including all the ones from last night. a handful (specifically from the mallorca instagram) haven’t been posted just because I need to double check my translations with víctor, and he’s fast asleep right now lol. he’ll be up shortly though, and he will post them. there’s also a handful of social posts from mid-December I’ve yet to post, and most of you likely don’t care at this point, but i’d still like to for archival reasons, so those will come your way in a bit.

2. we’ve decided to stop tagging all skames variants except for “skam españa” so algorithmically we can use our tags more effectively (because tumblr only tracks like the first 5 tags 🙄). so if you want to track a tag for our updates, “skam españa” is the tag to track, and also the tag searching on our blog will now work much better.

3. for the videos - i know I am very behind. first two clips have been posted by me, and the transcripts for clip 6 and 7 are coming shortly. i solely do the tech for our enterprise, and the pure setup of this operation has taken a lot of effort. plus, my 6+ year old computer was not cooperating at all today when i was trying to export the subbed clips, so i’m going to try again tomorrow. i will have every clip, and hopefully the full episode (with viri’s clips!), uploaded by midnight CST Sunday, or SO HELP ME GOD!!! i will drag steve jobs up from the grave to fix my computer if i have to!! 😡

4. on a lighter (yet relevant) note, an important question for you all - does anyone know how to download videos from the Movistar+ site? i have an account contributor Julia kindly gave me the password to, and i can stream the videos just fine. but even after diving into the code to get the m3u8 link, as well as trying to rewrite some of the page’s html, it still won’t budge. it seems to be very encoded. i’m good with computers and pirating, and i’ve never encountered a website i couldn’t crack, but the Movistar+ one is surprisingly tricky. i guess i can just screen record for Viri’s clips, but those are always lower quality than a pure download, so it disappoints me a bit. if anyone has any insight on how to get HD Movistar+ videos, let me know!

that’s all of the crazed ramblings from me for now. time to sleep for a few hours, then get up and work some more! though this is a lot of effort, it’s effort i don’t mind putting in because i love this show, and i love y’all and my fellow translators so much. goodnight, and hope they don’t drop 5 clips tomorrow again!
