The RCMP has arrested one woman after officers moved in on pro-Palestinian protesters at the University of British Columbia campus in Vancouver.
Global News cameras captured police officers and protesters at Westbrook Mall and University Boulevard on Wednesday morning.
There are no other reports of arrest so far.
The protesters are demanding the university cut ties with Israeli institutions and divest from companies connected to Israel, as the conflict with Hamas continues overseas. genocide of Palestinians is supported by the Canadian government (correction by poster).
Bus service has resumed, after TransLink said trolley buses were turning around at the Blanca Loop and diesel buses were being diverted. [...]

Notes from the poster @el-shab-hussein: I will no longer entertain these genocide supporting Western journalistic institutions as they whitewash the blood OF MY PEOPLE on the hands of this government. I will start crossing out nonsense in posted excerpts and fixing it as I see fit.

Helper service at Kegg by Greg Brown Via Flickr: On a late winter afternoon in 1985, one of Southern Pacific's SD45Rs shoves a westbound past Kegg Pit on the Black Butte Subdivision. The train is climbing the grade to SP's crossing of the Southern Cascades near Grass Lake.
The Canadian National cars just ahead of the caboose are interesting. They likely are carrying loads of lumber from British Columbia. This traffic was probably moved south from Vancouver, BC by Burlington Northern, and interchanged to SP in Portland.
Today, BNSF would retain this traffic, since it can move the cars from BC to Southern California/Arizona entirely on its own lines. It's just another reason the Black Butte Sub is quieter today than it was in the 1980s. These cars would now be moving over BNSF's Gateway Subdivision, roughly 20 miles to the east.

1st Canadian anon here! youre so welcome for the advice! In terms of other cities, maybe check in the maritimes....maybe St. John's in Newfoundland and Labrador or Halifax in Nova Scotia! I'm not too familiar with this region tho. Not as expensive as Vancouver or Toronto, but the cost of living is still bad. There is also Calgary, Alberta, in the west. Also not as expensive as Toronto and Vancouver.
As for Québec, there's been a lot of controversy in the government about people moving there who cannot speak french. Since English colonization and bc of current tourism, everyone there speaks English and there are a lot of predominantly English-speaking areas. However, the government is trying to make newcomers (kids in school for example) learn french and make Québec more french focused to preserve the language and it might be a bit difficult to get medical and other government services in English if things keep going the way they do. I'm all for prioritizing our language but these services are really important to be accessible for everyone. Right now, it's alright though.
Overall, as long as you try, people will appreciate you. It's similar to European tourism where they just want their language to be respected by visitors. So living in a large city or in an English area is ur best bet for Québec, but it's still a good idea to know some french, especially for a job. It would be very difficult (near impossible) to get a job if you don't know french, unless youre in a VERY english area. But pls dont rely on me for this info lol for all i know there might be some opportunities! Hope this helps, whether you decide to move or visit 🥰🥰
thank you so much for taking the time to write this! it's understandable that they'd want to preserve the language. i however don't think i have enough brain capacity to learn another language (i already speak four, a fifth one would be TOO much for me). But if i do visit i will definitely try to learn some phrases!
canadians seem like such lovely and kind people, you anon have only proved that point to me further! cant wait to visit your beautiful country one day!

canadian here - canada's pretty okay. if you wanna move somewhere progressive stick with the big cities and not to dunk on the other provinces but BC and Ontario are probably the best in that sense (and ofc the most expensive sorry). Alberta is only semi jokingly known as the Texas of Canada so do with that what you will. Never been but from what I've heard you do need to speak French to get by in Quebec so unless you do or want to learn I wouldn't super recommend it.
as a Vancouverite I gotta rep my city- it's super diverse and really queer friendly, and in those regards feels really safe. plus the Pacific northwest is fantastic - so so much nature, loads of beaches, ski resorts, islands, lakes, trails, forests, and the temp goes from about -3 to 30 degrees Celsius, so not too extreme. Not sure what you've been told about Canadian wildlife but it's really not that bad - you only get bears in the suburbs and outwards and as long as you keep alert and keep your head on you it's fine. same with the coyotes.
downsides of Vancouver: job market is TOUGH atm, especially for entry level jobs. cost of living and housing especially is also really bad, and there is a fairly significant homelessness/drug/mental health problem that makes certain parts of the city not super safe
politically we are coming to a crossroads - Justin Trudeau, the current PM & with the Liberal Party, is near universally hated at this point, mostly for economic reasons, and the NDP party is never gonna win, so unless Trudeau gets his wakeup call and steps down, at our next election we might be looking at a Conservative government, which would not be ideal. not trump-levels of devastating but not ideal.
anyways you should come to Canada indy!! it's definitely not perfect but we'd love to have you <3
i do know the area im going to be moving to already but this was super informative about the surroundings thank you so much for being thorough i really appreciate it. and for explaining the political landscape too! super helpful
right now my worries lie in the work visa and it’s stipulations because i know i can’t apply for PR or citizenship for a couple years at least. updating my passport and applying for a visa is my next move, and then i know the canadian gov has to let me know if i’m approved and then give me the info on where i’m allowed to work and how long.
i’m guessing since my record was expunged there shouldn’t be a problem with that at least. what i am worried about is my history with keeping a job is not super good, and i’m worried that if i obtain a visa to work a specific place, and then fuck it up, then i’ll be shit outta luck
my other problem is the cost of living and how i’ll basically be forced to work to keep up with the visa and to afford actually eating and being alive.
if you don’t mind me picking your brain a bit more, healthcare is a big thing for me right now. does it differ from province to province and does it cover mental health services and issues? would therapy be on the table or is that an out of pocket cost or would i need better insurance etc
if you don’t know that’s cool! i’m just gathering as much info i can on the subject before i dive in, as i often do

if you’re hearing I LIKE YOU (A HAPPIER SONG) by POST MALONE & DOJA CAT playing, you have to know MILAN “MILLY” EDWARDS (SHE/HER; CIS WOMAN) is near by! the THIRTY-THREE year old HOTEL MANAGER has been in denver for, like, ONE YEAR. they’re known to be quite OPINIONATED, but being ADAPTABLE seems to balance that out. or maybe it’s the fact that they resemble LAURA HARRIER. personally, i’d love to know more about them seeing as how they’ve got those SOUND OF A BELL RINGING, SIGHING AFTER A STUPID PHONE CALL, LIVING OFF TV DINNERS AND TAKEOUT, YEARNING FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER vibes. and maybe i’ll get my chance if i hang out around the DOWNTOWN DISTRICT long enough!
STATS:
full name :       milan ramona edwards
nickname(s) :     milly
birthplace :      miami, florida
date of birth :       01 / 01 / 1990
parentage :      elizabeth washington edwards & jeffrey edwards
relationship status :     single
gender identity :     cis woman ( she/her )
sexual orientation :     heterosexual
faceclaim :      laura harrier
BACKGROUND:
born in miami, florida to two… trying parents.
in no way was milan planned. in actuality, milan’s conception was meant to be no more than one last hurrah before her father left salt lake city, utah to fort hood in killeen, texas to join the military base
however, two and a half months later, sergeant jeffrey edwards receives a letter from the one and only elizabeth washington saying she’s pregnant and it has to be his
trying to do things the traditional way, the two find a way to get elizabeth to killeen and situated. around elizabeth’s four month mark, elizabeth and jeffrey decide to elope, tethering themselves together forever.
it’s around six and half months that the edwards’ are told they’re being relocated to florida.
milan isn’t due until mid january, but decides she wants to spend new years with her parents. she’s born on january 1, 1990 to a twenty-four year old jeffrey and a twenty-five year old elizabeth.
she spends the first year of her life in florida, but it’s at age one the edwards’ are told to move to seattle, and age three they’re told to move to washington d.c.
stability had never been a word milan was all too familiar with, seeing how she never lived in the same town for longer than two years at a time up until the age of eighteen
despite attending numerous public schools both on and off bases, milan had to really rely on herself if she wanted to retain any information. jumping from schools in the middle of the year always left her at a loss. either she was joining a new school ahead or behind where everyone else was.
neither of her parents were educated past the secondary level, but her mom tried to help her whenever she had time
luckily, the books and work she did seemed to be a constant in her life, which motivated her to do the work on her own. while the content of the work may have been inconsistent based on relocations, the expectation remained the same.
if she can’t control anything going on around her, she can control her own person. her grades were always good, and she always took really good care of herself. as she entered her pre-teen / teen years, she began reading different fashion magazines to figure out what to do with her hair, skin, and makeup. something she’s always had, though, is an incredible care for her teeth. it’s at age thirteen she decides she wants to go into dentistry when she gets older.
when she’s fifteen years old, jeffrey edwards is discharged from his military services. after living on bases all around the country, he decides he wants to settle down in vancouver, bc.
living in vancouver from ages fifteen to eighteen meant she was going to have a new record for place she’s lived the longest.
it’s not until things have really settled that milan notices her parents don’t seem to have the connection she thought they did. with the chaos of moving all the time with two parents working, it was never apparent to milan that they might not be a good match.
things are tense, and she hears harsh whispers across the hall when her parents believe she’s asleep.
still, they refuse to divorce. milan is almost out of the house, then they can be free to live life as they wish. after giving her years of instability, the last thing they want to do is spring yet another new life change on her. sometimes she wishes they had.
to get away from it all and back to what she’s familiar with, milan looks for a school in the states where she can get a degree in dental hygiene.
at age eighteen she moves to sacramento, california to attend carrington college. the program promises licensure in less than two years, and the sooner milan can get herself to a normal life, the better.
when she’s twenty and unfortunately after some mishaps with fiscal services and payments, milan is halfway through her program. just one more year and she’s done. and that’s when she meets her first boyfriend. she’s never been in one place long enough to really care to meet anyone, so this man is both nerve-wracking and exciting.
he is good to her. in fact, she’s never felt more COMFORTABLE in her life. with his love and support, the last year of the program is a breeze and she passes her licensing exams with flying colors.
she’s twenty-three and a year into her new job when she messes things up ROYALLY. her boyfriend’s sister is now engaged, and milan begins to think. she begins thinking of her parents timeline versus where her and her boyfriend were. they were almost the age her parents were when they had her. her parents never had the heart to tell her the truth about her conception, and although she knows their relationship is not good, she has no one else to look up to. she didn’t meet many friends parents growing up, and her parents would talk to more people on each base than she could keep up with.
for the first time in her life, milan is not fully in control of herself. sure, for the most part, everything is her choice. but wanting to be married was a decision they both had to make, and it didn’t seem like he was going to budge. before she knows it, she’s pushed too hard and he’s moving his things out.
not long after that, her parents finally decide to pull the plug on their own marriage as well. a cherry on top of the shit cake life had seemed to hand her.
with everything she knows crashing down around her, she feels herself spiraling. being a dental hygienist is not nearly as fulfilling as milan had planned for it to be, but the gig did come with some pretty decent benefits.
it’s the only way she can afford therapy. while she desperately needs multiple years to unpack everything she needs to deal with, it only takes a year for her to decide she needs to find a new job.
when her and her boyfriend were together, she was always the one planning dinners and parties, and she always felt her calmest when doing so. her therapist suggests it gives her the opportunity to have control, something she’d lacked the majority of her life. so, getting a degree in hospitality management and seeking jobs in that field seems like a no brainer.
she’s twenty-nine when she finally finishes school for the second time. she knows through social media that her ex has found his way to denver, colorado, and seems to have found peace for himself.
they haven’t spoken since he in years, but she ( hesitantly ) reaches out to catch up. she asks how he’s liking the city and what it’s done for him. in the end, she asks if denver is big enough for the both of them. ❛ I WANT SOME OF THAT PEACE YOU’VE GOT, ❜ she jokes.
to her surprise, he says yes. she goes back to work as a dental hygienist while planning small events on her off time. that, and selling most of the things still remaining in the apartment she never moved out of, seemed to be a bit lucrative. she saves enough money to get her to denver by february 2022, and her parents were kind enough to chip in what they could to help.
she quickly found a job at a hotel-- a receptionist, but there’s always room for growth. she moves up fairly quickly. it’s not long before she’s promoted to hotel manager.
she’s currently still trying to find her footing of life in a new(ish) town with a new(ish) career. overall, my girl is strugglin !!!!!

After a fond farewell to Days Inn by Wyndham, Vancouver we picked up our Toyota from the airport and set off for Hope BC. The reason for booking this place seems a little lost, but we assumed that it was that we needed a break in what would otherwise have been a very long journey to Naramata tomorrow. Whatever it was, it would appear to be a commonly held view because it appears that the place is mainly geared up as a place to pause to eat and sleep on route to other places all points Rockies. Hope, population 6,181 was first noted when some two third of the native inhabitants were wiped out by smallpox in 1782 after a community having existed here for 10,000 years. Next Simon Fraser arrives in 1808 giving his name to the river, Hudson Trading Company opens in 1848 before being engulfed by the golf rush in 1858. Hope along with the rest of BC became part of Canada in 1871 and in 1886 acquired a station stop on the Canadian Pacific Mainline Railway. The 512km Kettle Valley Railway was built in 1916 to service the copper and silver mining industries and passed through Hope but was closed in 1961 and the track bed now used for recreational pursuits. Skip forward a couple of decades and Rambo First Blood was made here in 1982. However, the Hope we have today is a town set in glorious mountain countryside on a fast flowing salmon spawning river with the beautiful Kawkawa Lake nearby. It doesn't deserve to be just a stopover town because it has fantastic virtues of it own for many outdoor activities. We are staying at the Hope Springs Eternal B&B. A well used phrase from Ecclesiastes, later a poem by Alexander Pope, a film in 2018 and now a B&B. Jolly good. Well it's a great place to stop, although how the postman finds number 65882 in a street completely defeats me! We are told bears visit the very pleasant garden in the morning from the woods beyond. Hmm that old one. The area sits in a bowl created by surrounding mountains making the weather a little volatile. The sky was blue and the sun shone this afternoon, then within a very short space of time the clouds gathered and we had an enormous thunder storm accompanied by torrential rain. Then it all cleared up and we went for a walk along the disused railway track.
Tomorrow we move ever onwards deeper into the Rockies, climbing ever higher. Next stop is for 3 nights giving us more time to explore the area.
ps Some local controversy in these parts due to a federal project forcing an oil pipeline to be cut through forest from Alberta. Feelings are that locals get the construction noise, dirt and grief and Alberta sells its oil and gets rich. All this and accusations that Alberta would like to be part of the USA!
pps A sign in McDonald's says No Soliciting. What kind of town is this?

what do you mean by wait time? I thought you were canadian? Don't you guys have free healthcare?
So, unfortunately in canada, Free healthcare doesn't mean "timely" health care, or getting whatever care whenever you want it. Its sadly not like poppin' in for a hair cut, or showing up for dental work. (dental is private still. I'm fairly sure. ) Like health care in canada is very very VERY backed up. It was like that prior to covid but it covid defs I feel like exhausted existing gaps. Like in BC - because I lived there for awhile, and I feel comfortable speaking about BC. there's areas were people don't have access to GPS/family drs and no walkins. (Or didn't in 2022) Like Canada also has health care deserts. Interior of BC is like that. (Outside of the vancouver/greater vancouver area. Anything outside of there, its very spotty depending on areas.) Which means too people sadly have to go to hospitals. (And this sucks because people need prescriptions.) Like it wasn't uncommon to see questioned posed on fb groups aimed for the city I lived in for 9ish months. About does that city have a walk-in/gp/family dr. And are waitlists being taken, etc. I heard this question even at a pharmacy, a lady came in with her small child, who had what she believed is a ear infection& wanted drops. She was told they can't give drops, she needs a prescription. So she asked are there clinics in the area? She was told there's no clinics local - and she'd have to take her wee one to the hospital. This is the same message fb groups would have. No clinicals locally, hospital. I couldn't even get breast imaging done in that town. you can't self referral. You need a gp/family dr/ walk in to give you the paperwork/do referral. ^^;' Which is one of the things I had to wait for. Until I moved again, to Alberta. & in alberta, my GP isn't close to me. He's almost 2 hours away. But he was also the only one accepting patients when we moved. And this is closer than my previously dr in bc. I do see some work towards offering more options that are in person. (everyone constantly pushes people to telus and there telehealth. Telus is a phone/internet/cable company. For americans this would be like AT&T getting into the health market.) I've noticed pharmacys now can write scripts for mild health issues, or for things like diabetes. (YAY) I do see some family drs opening up now, collecting lists of patients, and some walkins. (also some walkins are ran by pharmacists, so they are again for "mild" causes. Like probably could go in with a rash from your squashes and be like 'this itchy, i touched squash leafs' pharmacist be like 'new to gardening huh? alright well uh. here." - Squash leafs can cause rashes. just so folks know lol. ) But yeah. I also don't think this is all of canada. I can only speak about what I see locally. But health care in canada is extremely backed up, and depending on service and severity medical professionals believe you are, (I.e. they believe your moderate/mild vs severe) you could be waiting. I've been waiting on my referral since March this year. Even with the rectum bleeding i'm still counted as "mild/moderate". & I won't be able to "see" my specialist until late sept. (And what I mean by "see" I mean, we have a phone call aptoment scheduled... from there hopefully I get referral for colonoscopy, and for follow up that can be in person. but I honestly don't know.)

New Post has been published on https://bloornews.com/blog-toronto/bc-company-granted-permission-by-health-canada-to-produce-and-sell-cocaine/
BC Company Granted Permission by Health Canada to Produce and Sell Cocaine
A British Columbia cannabis company says it has received approval from Health Canada to produce, sell, and distribute cocaine.
A woman (L) prepares to inject herself with an unknown substance as a man sits in a wheelchair outside Insite, the supervised consumption site, in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, B.C., on Feb. 21, 2017. (The Canadian Press/Darryl Dyck
In a news release on Feb. 22, Adastra Holdings Ltd., which produces marijuana for adult use and medical sales out of headquarters in Langley, B.C., announced that it was granted a Health Canada amendment to its Controlled Drug and Substances Dealer’s License on Feb. 17.
The company can now “legally possess, produce, sell and distribute” cocaine, in addition to previously being allowed to deal up to 1,000 grams of psilocybin and psilocin, otherwise known as magic mushrooms.
The news release indicates Adastra can “interact with up to 250 grams” of cocaine, and can import coca leaves to manufacture and synthesize the hard drug in Canada.
Adastra’s Health Canada approval follows a federal government approval for B.C. that, as of Jan. 31, granted the province a temporary three-year exemption to allow adults to legally possess up to 2.5 grams of any combination of opioids, cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA, heroin, fentanyl, and/or morphine for personal use, at no risk of being arrested, charged, or having their drugs seized.
The CEO of Adastra, Michael Forbes, is a pharmacist who formerly worked in multiple methadone pharmacies, according to the company, and is a proponent of “harm reduction,” which is a philosophy that promotes reducing negative consequences associated with drug use, but without requiring abstinence from drugs or addiction treatment.
Adastra’s release says he previously “piloted a needle exchange program” at the direction of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in 2010. Forbes is the creator of the Forbes Group, which has multiple companies ranging from moving storage, cannabis, health care services, and advertising.
The federal government has been supportive of the B.C. decriminalization plan, with federal Mental Health and Addictions Minister Carolyn Bennett saying on Jan. 30 that it will reduce “the stigma, the fear, and shame that keep people who use drugs silent about their use, or using alone.”
Conservatives have been critical of the plan, with leader Pierre Poilievre saying B.C.’s approach to the issue has been an “abject failure.”
“Decriminalization has been in place in B.C. now since about 2017 in reality,” he said on Feb. 1. “The results are in. The debate is over. It has been a disaster, an absolute abject failure.”

Jang Mo Jib, 808 Bute St, Vancouver (Downtown), BC V6E 4H6, Canada
Tumblr media
We found Jang Mo Jib back in 2011 and we fell in love with their seafood pancake (hae mool pah jun). We hadn’t had that pancake for many years and never found a better version.
Jang Mo Jib moved to another location and the newer restaurant looks fancier and more like a late night lounge/bar. The space is dark with loud music. Diners sit in booths with some privacy, coat hooks, and a call button at each table. We preferred the feel of the homey older location.
Banchan: There were four kinds (slices of thin fishcake, spicy cabbage kimchee, blanched bean sprouts, potato cubes) and they all tasted fresh and well-seasoned.
Hae mool pah jun ($29.98 CAD): The seafood pancake was as good as it used to be. It’s served in a cast iron pan, so the exterior is crispy, but the rest is chewy. It’s studded with calamari and shrimp and topped with crunchy bits of shredded pollack.  The house dipping (soy-based) sauce really complements the pancake.
The menu has a wide variety of Korean dishes. Service was fine, but we were disappointed that they no longer offer complimentary hot barley tea.

Why Consider Home Renovation in Vancouver?
Vancouver, BC, is known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant urban life. With its rich architectural diversity, from modern condos to classic heritage homes, it’s no wonder that so many homeowners in the area are choosing to renovate rather than move. A home renovation Vancouver project can dramatically enhance your living space, ensuring it meets your needs while aligning with your personal style.
Many people in Vancouver, especially those living in older homes, find that their property needs more than just a fresh coat of paint. Whether it’s a kitchen, bathroom, or full home renovation, updating and renovating older properties can provide many benefits. Renovations often include structural upgrades, energy-efficient improvements, and updated designs, offering both aesthetic and functional benefits. Plus, it can significantly increase your home’s resale value, making it an investment that can pay off in the long run.
What to Consider Before Starting Your Renovation
Before you start any Vancouver home renovation project, it’s important to consider a few key factors. These will help ensure the process runs smoothly, stays within budget, and meets your expectations.
Budgeting and Financing Renovations can be costly, depending on the scope of the project. It’s crucial to establish a clear budget early on, accounting for both the material and labor costs. Be sure to include a contingency fund for unexpected expenses, as home renovations often reveal hidden issues that need to be addressed. If you’re financing the project, you’ll need to explore your options for home equity loans, lines of credit, or other financial products available in Vancouver.
Choosing the Right Professionals One of the most important aspects of a successful renovation is working with the right team. Choose a reputable home renovation Vancouver contractor who has experience with your type of renovation project. A skilled team will ensure the work is done to code and that all permits and inspections are completed properly. They’ll also guide you through the design process, offering suggestions and insights on how to maximize your space and budget.
Design and Functionality The design of your space is key to making the most of your renovation. Whether you're modernizing a kitchen, adding an extra bathroom, or creating an open-concept living space, the design should align with both your needs and aesthetic preferences. If you're unsure about design choices, many renovation companies offer design consultation services. These professionals can help you choose colors, materials, and layouts that will complement your home’s style and enhance functionality.
Timeline Renovations can take time, and it’s essential to have a realistic timeline in place. Depending on the size and complexity of the project, renovations can take weeks or even months. While delays are sometimes unavoidable, a professional team will provide a timeline and keep you updated on progress. Keeping the lines of communication open with your contractors will ensure that there are no surprises along the way.
The Most Common Home Renovations in Vancouver
Home renovations in Vancouver can cover a wide range of projects, but there are a few that are particularly popular due to the city’s architectural trends and lifestyle needs. Let’s take a look at some of the most common renovations in Vancouver homes:
Kitchen Renovations The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home, so it’s no surprise that it’s one of the most renovated areas in Vancouver homes. Whether you’re updating appliances, adding an island, or changing cabinetry and countertops, a kitchen renovation can have a significant impact. Not only does it improve the aesthetic appeal, but it can also enhance the functionality of the space, making cooking and entertaining easier and more enjoyable.
Bathroom Renovations Vancouver homeowners also love to renovate their bathrooms, transforming outdated, cramped spaces into luxurious retreats. Upgrades such as installing a walk-in shower, replacing old vanities, or upgrading to energy-efficient fixtures can completely refresh your bathroom. A Vancouver home renovation expert will help you design a space that maximizes storage and functionality while also incorporating modern materials and designs for a spa-like feel.
Basement Suites As Vancouver’s real estate market becomes more competitive, many homeowners are converting basements into rental suites or additional living spaces. These renovations provide an opportunity to maximize your property’s value and generate rental income. A well-designed basement suite can become a fully functional and stylish living area, with the proper insulation, lighting, and finishes to make it comfortable year-round.
Outdoor Living Spaces Vancouver’s beautiful weather and stunning scenery make outdoor living spaces highly sought after. Renovating your patio, deck, or garden area can increase the appeal of your home while providing a relaxing outdoor retreat. Whether you’re building a deck for entertaining or creating a peaceful garden oasis, an outdoor renovation adds both beauty and value to your home.
Structural and Energy-Efficient Upgrades Many older homes in Vancouver require structural updates, such as reinforcing foundations, improving insulation, or replacing outdated electrical systems.
