авантура Цанмома у Београду
avantura Canmoma u Beogradu, or, the adventure of canmom in Belgrade
it's another one of these 'travels of canmom' posts! last time we went to Gamescom in Germany. this time I went to Belgrade for a company event.
Tumblr media
I can't actually talk that much about this one because the main thing I was doing was cooking up game pitches for what we might work on next (kind of like a game jam but just for concepts), and while that was very interesting and I learned a lot about how to get ideas across in limited time and make judgements about what videogames might sell and how long they'd take to make and such... it is however probably not something I can talk in too much detail about yet, because we might end up making these games, so I can't be like 'the theme was x and we pitched y'.
so instead I will mostly talk about Belgrade! and show some of the photos I took that don't have game developers wandering around in them.
Tumblr media
that's Nikola Tesla airport. did you know that Nikola Tesla was from modern-day Serbia (at the time, the Austrian Empire)? I didn't but I do now!
most of the week was spent in this fancy villa...
Tumblr media
...which is called the Villa Saga Paradiso. it must once upon a time have been some stinking rich family's holiday home, because it's a super weird building, with such features as a pool table, swimming pool, tennis court, library, and even a weird kinda stage thing on the top floor. definitely full of weirdly shaped rooms and interesting old furniture, it felt kinda like a place a moomin might hole up. so here's some pics of the place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also the view was kinda insane...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also! here's a pic of a Serbian snail that came out rather nice:
Tumblr media
anyway on Saturday we went into the city centre to do some more touristy shit. I went to the two places in Belgrade that presumably everyone goes, namely the Fortress and the Temple. but I also got some shots of the city centre...
(also a tram shot for the trams girls in the audience)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so as you can see, the vibes of central Belgrade are p Southern European sorta architecture, lots of pale stone walls and tiled roofs and the like. but you also have these crazy cool looking tower blocks from the communist period...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...which were unfortunately quite hard to photograph out of a moving car window.
But yeah, we were on our way to the fortress.
Tumblr media
Belgrade Fortress has a pretty storied history. At one point it simply was Belgrade; even after that, it's been occupied by variously the Byzantines, Turks and Austrians, who all made various additions and modifications to the fortress, and sometimes accidentally blew it up. Nowadays it's become a kind of park and tourist area, surrounded by the river, and thus some pretty impressive views...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as well as various things that tourists might like to look at, like statues of dinosaurs and tanks, and people dressed Historically.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
apparently you're only allowed 30 images in a post, so let me make another one for the Temple, which was the craziest building I saw, and the butt statue...

Jan, Vlastnik About Expo 2027 Belgrade Surcin Belgrade and Serbia will host the Specialised EXPO exhibition in 2027 and present themselves as the world capital of education, culture, and innovation. The theme of the exhibition in Belgrade is “Play for Humanity: Sports and Music for All” and it focuses on the importance of games, sports and music and their contribution to the development of humanity. About 120 countries, international organisations, and companies will have the opportunity to respond to the given theme by presenting through various programmes and activities on a 25-hectare exhibition space. EXPO 2027 Belgrade will leave behind new infrastructure, improved access and transportation networks, as well as the implementation of the latest technologies. It will also include permanent spaces and facilities – exhibition halls and open spaces, which will enable Serbia to meet the needs of society by organising competitions and events of both local and international scale. EXPO has a transformative power in shaping the perception of the host country in the world and drawing attention to its capacities and achievements. At the same time, EXPO is an opportunity to promote diplomacy, and the economic and cultural development resulting from the organisation of EXPO is an incentive for sustainable urban transformation, affecting architecture, urban planning, transportation, as well as intangible areas such as culture and education. It is expected that the organisation of EXPO 2027 Belgrade will result in a wide range of socio-economic changes, benefiting both the local population and the city of Belgrade, the Republic of Serbia, and the wider region. Since Belgrade will become a global hub for idea exchange in 2027, we will have the opportunity to see the latest technological trends presented at the Exhibition. EXPO 2027 Belgrade will contribute to the development of the capital, as well as the economy of the entire country. The organisation of the exhibition will have an impact on the increase in construction works, as well as the construction of new hotels, the National Stadium, the Fair, the river port, etc. The organisation of this event will have a significant impact on Serbia’s GDP, with the largest influx expected through hospitality, tourism, hotel industry, and other activities. Consequently, this will also mean higher economic growth and a stronger economy. The event itself will also attract foreign capital to Serbia, which is becoming an even more attractive investment destination. EXPO 2027 Belgrade will significantly impact the increase in employment and the creation of new jobs. Large infrastructure projects will be built, and they will be used long after the exhibition, following their conversion. Belgrade and Serbia will present themselves as a global capital of education, culture, sports, art, and innovation during the Exhibition. It is estimated that we will have over 4.2 million visits during the three-month exhibition. All of them, as well as media attention and public interest, provide an opportunity to present our economic and technological potential, science, culture, art, history to the world, along with the vision of Serbia’s future, as the largest regional centre and capital of innovation and development in this part of Europe.

Minneapolis Braces for Verdict in Floyd’s Death (NYT) MINNEAPOLIS—Around midday last Monday, Samir Patel received a phone call from his friend, a dentist: Gunshots had rung out, his friend told him, and the contractors who were rebuilding the office he lost in last year’s unrest had fled. He was boarding up, and he told Mr. Patel he should move quickly to protect his own business, a dry cleaning shop. Elite Cleaners, Mr. Patel’s shop, is on a side street, not far from the shell of the Minneapolis Police Department’s Third Precinct station house, which burned last year in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death. The surrounding community of Lake Street, a corridor of immigrant-owned businesses—taquerias, furniture shops, liquor stores and cafes—was devastated by looting in the days of protests and the riots that followed. The city has said that the unrest led to $350 million in losses, with more than a thousand buildings either destroyed or damaged. As the trial of Derek Chauvin, the white former police officer charged with murder in the death of Mr. Floyd, a Black man, draws to a close, the city is on edge, fearing that a not-guilty verdict would bring anger, chaos and destruction once again.
New migrant facilities crop up to ease crowding, again (AP) For the third time in seven years, U.S. officials are scrambling to handle a dramatic spike in children crossing the U.S.-Mexico border alone, leading to a massive expansion in emergency facilities to house them as more kids arrive than are being released to close relatives in the United States. More than 22,000 migrant children were in government custody as of Thursday, with 10,500 sleeping on cots at convention centers, military bases and other large venues likened to hurricane evacuation shelters with little space to play and no privacy. More than 2,500 are being held by border authorities in substandard facilities. So many children are coming that there’s little room in long-term care facilities, where capacity shrank significantly during the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, minors are packed into Border Patrol facilities not meant to hold them longer than three days or they’re staying for weeks in the mass housing sites that often lack the services they need. Lawyers say some have not seen social workers who can reunite them with family in the U.S. Both Donald Trump and Barack Obama faced similar upticks in Central American children crossing the border alone in 2019 and 2014. The numbers have now reached historic highs amid economic fallout from the pandemic, storms in Central America and the feeling among migrants that Biden is more welcoming than his predecessor.
Students’ struggles pushed Peru teacher to run for president (AP) As schools across Peru closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, Pedro Castillo tried to find a way to keep classes going for his 20 fifth- and sixth-grade students. But in his impoverished rural community deep in the Andes, his efforts were futile. Seventeen of the students didn’t even have access to a cellphone. Tablets promised by the government never arrived. “Where is the state?” Castillo, 51, told The Associated Press after a day of planting sweet potatoes on his own land. It was the last straw for Castillo, who over 25 years had seen his students struggle in crumbling schools where teachers also cook, sweep floors and file paperwork. He’d already dabbled in activism with the local teachers’ union and helped lead a national strike in 2017. But now he went further, tossing his name into a crowd of 18 candidates in Peru’s presidential election. Defying the polls, the elementary school teacher came first in the April 11 voting, albeit with less than 20% of the overall vote. The stunning result gave him a place in June’s presidential runoff against Keiko Fujimori, one of Peru’s most established political figures and the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori. It is her third attempt to become president. Castillo’s unlikely campaign comes at a turbulent time for the South American nation that has suffered like few others from the COVID-19 pandemic. It recently ran through three presidents in a week after one was removed by congress over corruption allegations. Every president of the past 36 years has been ensnared in corruption allegations, some imprisoned. One died by suicide before police could arrest him.
New direction needed: EU launches website for citizens to discuss its future (Reuters) The European Union launched on Monday a website for citizens to debate the future of the 27-nation bloc as the exit of Britain, climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of nationalism force the EU to reflect on how it wants to develop. The website, available for contributions in the EU’s 24 official languages, is part of what EU institutions call the Conference on the Future of Europe—a forum for debate to help identify issues the EU needs to address in the changing global context. “The conclusions of the conference could be the backbone for reforms in the Union in the future,” one of the leaders of the initiative, member of European Parliament and former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt told a news conference. The website prompts debates on subjects including climate change, the environment, health, the economy, social justice and jobs, the role of the EU in the world, values and rights, the rule of law, security, digital transformation, democracy and migration. Citizens can also launch their own topics.
Cheating at Greek universities (Foreign Policy) Greek universities are experiencing a crisis of confidence in their students as remote learning takes the place of traditional education. Professors have noted surprisingly high marks from previously poor students, raising suspicions that the students may be using underhanded tactics. “Result averages are up, and people we haven’t seen in years are showing up for exams because the system makes it easy to cheat,” Kostas Kosmatos, an assistant professor of criminology at Thrace’s Democritus University told AFP. Sofia, a psychology student, admitted to have taken two exams “on behalf of two of my friends and nobody realized.” Resourceful students have created technological workarounds to boost their chances during exams, crowdsourcing answers in live chats with students at the University of Crete even enlisting a linguistic expert to help them during exams. “But even he got a verse wrong,” Angela Kastrinaki, dean of the University of Crete’s literature department, told AFP. “So I got 50 papers with the same mistake. It was funny.”
Russia Expels 20 Czech Diplomats as Tensions Escalate (NYT) A day after the government of the Czech Republic blamed operatives from Russia’s military intelligence agency for a series of mysterious explosions at an ammunition depot in 2014 and expelled 18 Russian diplomats, the Russian government announced on Sunday that 20 Czech diplomats would be ejected in response. The expulsions signal further escalation of tensions between the Kremlin and western governments, reaching an intensity not seen since the Cold War. The spat between the Czech Republic and Russia comes just days after the United States imposed heavy sanctions on Russian government officials and businesses in response to a large-scale hacking of American government computer systems. In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry called the Czech accusations “absurd” and accused the government of being an American puppet. “In an effort to please the U.S.A. following recent American sanctions against Russia, the Czech government in this instance even exceeded its overseas masters,” the Russian Foreign Ministry statement said.
Montenegro’s billion-dollar dilemma (NYT) Few Europeans thought it was a good idea for Montenegro to take a mammoth loan from China to build a highway. Now the tiny, mountainous country is asking the European Union for help to repay the debt—and the answer, so far, has been no. The situation in Montenegro is the latest skirmish in an escalating global push for influence by China, which has made inroads in economically weak countries by offering loans that demand loyalty to Beijing but otherwise have few strings attached. Montenegro’s first debt payments are due this summer. The $1 billion loan is nearly a fifth the size of the country’s entire economy. Montenegrin leaders say they won’t miss their loan payment this summer even if no E.U. aid is forthcoming. European officials said they wanted to help Montenegro but were searching for a palatable way to do so. Linking the aid to the loan too directly could be politically difficult, since many E.U. officials do not want to be in the position of effectively paying down a Chinese loan that E.U. leaders warned against in the first place. “China has been filling any opening it felt it could,” said Vuk Vuksanovic, a researcher at the Belgrade Center for Security Policy, a Serbian think tank. “Local capitals were hungry for cash, particularly on big development issues like infrastructure. And the Chinese were willing to go places where Western institutions were not.”
Afghan Women Fear the Worst, Whether War or Peace Lies Ahead (NYT) Farzana Ahmadi watched as a neighbor in her village in northern Afghanistan was flogged by Taliban fighters last month. The crime: Her face was uncovered. People silently watched as the beating dragged on. Fear—even more potent than in years past—is gripping Afghans now that U.S. and NATO forces will depart the country in the coming months. They will leave behind a publicly triumphant Taliban, who many expect will seize more territory and reinstitute many of the same oppressive rules they enforced under their regime in the 1990s. The New York Times spoke to many Afghan women about what comes next in their country, and they all said the same thing: Whatever happens will not bode well for them. Whether the Taliban take back power by force or through a political agreement with the Afghan government, their influence will almost inevitably grow. In a country in which an end to nearly 40 years of conflict is nowhere in sight, many Afghans talk of an approaching civil war. “All the time, women are the victims of men’s wars,” said Raihana Azad, a member of Afghanistan’s Parliament. “But they will be the victims of their peace, too.”
Hard-line Islamists take 6 Pakistani security personnel hostage amid deadly clashes (Washington Post) A hard-line Islamist group on Sunday took six Pakistani security personnel hostage after days of deadly clashes in the northeastern city of Lahore over a French satirical newspaper’s publication of cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad and the arrest of the group’s leader by Pakistani authorities. A senior police officer and two paramilitary fighters were among those taken after protesters surrounded a police station and stormed the compound, according to Lahore police spokesman Arif Rana. A week of violence across the country has left at least four dead, according to the protesters. Police officials say thousands have been arrested. The tensions driving the protests, led by the Islamist party Tehrik-e-Labbaik Pakistan, have been simmering for months after French President Emmanuel Macron honored a teacher who was beheaded last year in France after he showed a class the cartoons depicting Muhammad. For many Muslims, depictions of the prophet are blasphemous and deeply insulting. Macron’s comments sparked protests across the Muslim world last year.
India’s capital to lock down as nation’s virus cases top 15M (AP) New Delhi was being put under a weeklong lockdown Monday night as an explosive surge in coronavirus cases pushed the India’s capital’s health system to its limit. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said in a news conference the national capital was facing shortages of oxygen and some medicine. “I do not say that the system has collapsed, but it has reached its limits,” Kejriwal said, adding that harsh measures were necessary to “prevent a collapse of the health system.” Similar virus curbs already have been imposed in the worst-hit state of Maharashtra, home to India’s financial capital, Mumbai. The closure of most industries, businesses and public places Wednesday night is to last 15 days.
Pacific Ocean storm intensifies into year’s first super typhoon (Reuters) Strong winds and high waves lashed the eastern Philippines on Monday as the strongest typhoon ever recorded in April barrelled past in the Pacific Ocean, killing one man and triggering flooding in lower-lying communities, disaster officials said. More than 100,000 people were evacuated from coastal areas, according to provincial disaster agencies. The core of Surigae, or Bising as the storm is known locally, is not expected to hit land. But with a diameter of 500 km and winds reaching 195 km per hour, parts of the eastern islands of Samar experienced flooding, while several communities lost power. The first super typhoon of 2021 foreshadows a busy storm season for the region in the year ahead, experts say.
Lebanon’s crumbling capital (AFP) Beirut’s roads are riddled with potholes, many walls are covered in anti-government graffiti and countless street lamps have long since gone dark. At night, car drivers creep cautiously past broken traffic lights and strain their eyes for missing manhole covers, stolen for the value of their metal. Many parking metres have been disabled in protest over an alleged corruption scandal, while cars are parked randomly on sidewalks. To many, the dysfunctional capital has become emblematic of a country mired in its worst crisis since the 1975-1990 civil war after decades of mismanagement and corruption. Much of Beirut’s infrastructure started falling apart long before last August’s massive portside explosion killed more than 200 people, levelled the waterfront and damaged countless buildings. Amid the crisis, the Lebanese currency has collapsed and continues its downward slide at a sickening rate that in itself is deepening the problem. As the currency has dived by more than 85 percent on the black market, wary contractors are steering clear of any municipal repairs that are paid for in Lebanese pounds.
Eleven dead, 98 injured after train derails in Egypt (Reuters) Eleven people were killed and 98 injured on Sunday in a train accident in Egypt’s Qalioubia province north of Cairo, the health ministry said in a statement. The train was heading from Cairo to the Nile Delta city of Mansoura when four carriages derailed at 1:54 p.m. (1154 GMT), about 40 kms (25 miles) north of Cairo. More than 50 ambulances took the injured to three hospitals in the province, the health ministry said. The derailing is the latest of several recent railway crashes in Egypt. At least 20 people were killed and nearly 200 were injured in March when two trains collided near Tahta, about 440 kms (275 miles) south of Cairo.
South Africa wildfire (Washington Post) Cape Town ordered precautionary evacuations of communities living along the edges of city landmark Table Mountain on Monday as firefighters struggled to contain a fire that gutted historical landmarks, including the oldest working windmill in South Africa and a library housing African antiquities at the University of Cape Town. The fire started Sunday morning near the memorial to colonial leader Cecil Rhodes and quickly spread uncontrolled beneath Devil’s Peak in Table Mountain National Park in an area popular with weekend hikers and cyclists. By Monday morning, strong southeasterly winds, which were expected to reach more than 30 miles per hour (50 km/h) later in the day, had pushed the fire toward densely-populated areas above Cape Town city. Well-known tourist sites, such as the Table Mountain aerial cableway, were temporarily closed. Heavy smoke engulfed the city forcing the closure of a major highway and other nearby roads. Hikers, park visitors, visitors to the nearby Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and hundreds of students from the university campus were evacuated on Sunday.
NASA’s Ingenuity Makes First Powered Flight On Mars (NPR) “Orville and Wilbur would be proud. NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter has made the first-ever powered flight on another planet, 117 years after the Wright Brothers’ historic flight on this planet. The flight itself was modest. The 4-pound helicopter rose 10 feet in the air, hovered briefly, and returned to the Martian surface.

fic wars - week two
Tumblr media
pairing: bucky barnes x reader warnings: none? word count: 2.6k~ notes: this is for @revengingbarnes and @chillingbucky’s fic wars 2019! basically how it works is that each pair receives six prompts. each of the writers will write three parts (alternating every week) with the given prompts to form a single story. @writeyourmindaway and i teamed up ( aka coin tossing writer duo ) so please make sure to read the first part linked here! it’s technically friday here so i’m sliding in at very last minute. am i sweating bullets? abso-frickin-lutely. anyways, enjoy! prompt: we have to sleep together but we can’t agree on the ac temperature
Missions after your first memorable one went smoothly. Most were intel, a couple rescue ones here and there. Operations didn’t get any easier but time and practice eased your comfort into the field. Slowly but surely you were finding your place among the Avengers.
It became second nature to joke around with Sam, making sarcastic wisecracks left and right. You advised little Peter about what not to do in high school and how to deal with this Flash kid. Wanda became your closest companion that the team often paired you two up for missions. Team members no longer intimidated you but started feeling like actual friends.
Still, you weren’t sure where you stood with Bucky Barnes.
Sure, he bought that post-mission drink but nothing progressed from there. If anything, the gesture felt like a man simply keeping his word. Nothing more noble than a man buying you a beer. Of course you knew there was nothing wrong with that; you just wanted...more.
He went from stifled cordial greetings to smiling politely and engaging in brief small talk whenever you saw one another in the compound. No surprise that his loyalty towards Steve and Sam kept him constantly preoccupied with the two men. But after that first mission, you found yourself noticing the subtleties of Bucky Barnes.
The way he trudged in the morning, hair sticking in all sorts of angles. How he tied back his hair whenever he trained. His preference towards black coffee, refusing to add anything to the drink. How he only flexed his right hand when he was irritated. You wondered if it had anything to do with his metal arm, but you didn’t pry. Colleagues couldn’t meddle into those types of affairs the way friends did.
You offered a hair tie one morning as he stumbled into the kitchen wearily trying to mat his hair down to no avail. The tie was neon pink and you worried the flashiness would cause him to say no. Instead he gave a small smile as he tied his loose hair. He thanked you, commenting how great you were.
“Anything for a colleague” you shrugged off.
Out of the corner of your eye, you noticed his smile disappear as he searched for a clean coffee mug. “He’s just tired. He hasn’t had coffee yet” you assumed not bothering to ask him. After all even if you wanted progression, you weren’t one to force anything.
Despite not frequently working together, you knew the inevitable team up was bound to happen again. So it wasn’t shocking when Steve announced you and Bucky would be teaming up for an intel mission in Belgrade. Catching his glance, he gave you a smile and nod before turning back to Cap. You had gotten used to the rhythm of these assignments that if everything went according to plan, it wouldn’t be a repeat of last time.
Just as you suspected, this operation was nothing to worry about. The two of you blended with the party crowd as you immediately got to work. It had been simple enough on your part. An oh so clumsy fumble into the Minister of Foreign Affairs’s arms with the apology that perhaps you had too much to drink. No one noticing you slipping the bug onto his lapel and a tracking device into his drink.
Bucky had no problem with his assignment either. He effortlessly cased the joint as he noted the security cameras and bodyguards, reporting them through his hidden mic without so much as a blink.
When the Minister was on the move, the two of you held back before tailing them. It came as no surprise that the Minister and his guards made their way to a seedy motel outside the city, his frequent location for business deals.
What you hadn’t expected was for him to meet up with the black market dealers that night. Jackpot. Although the team had an inkling of the shady connections, the Minister divulged illicit details you couldn’t believe. He discussed his government’s “problem” candidates that needed to be resolved properly.
“This idiot’s really giving us everything” Natasha laughed over the radio. You and Bucky smiled to yourselves as you sat in the car, listening to the Serbian feed as the rest of the team made offhanded comments.
“Great work, Sugar and Spice.” You rolled your eyes at Stark’s comments. Bucky grunted irritably. “You know what, kiddos? Take the rest of the night off. Booked you two a room in 105. In fact, Cap handed it off to Manchurian Candidate before you two left the compound. Do things I wouldn’t do.”
“Gee. Thanks, Tony” you let out a dry laugh. "You treat all the Avengers like this?”
“Nope. Only for you two, Posh and Becks.” Groaning at the new nicknames, you shook your head.
“What is Posh and Becks?” Bucky muttered under his breath. You stifled a laugh as he thumbed through his jacket pulling out a hotel key.
As both parties left the premise, you and Bucky grabbed your belongings and headed to the booked room now that the coast was clear.
“You think Stark could spring for some nicer digs” you deadpanned scanning the layout of the hotel. The stairwell railing was falling apart and the hotel sign’s light flickered menacingly. You knew the lodging wasn’t his fault; after all, this was a mission not a retreat. It didn’t mean they needed to spring for the grimy place where your enemy did his business transactions.
“It was supposed to be the surveillance room. Don’t think they were expecting the Serbian to admit his treason that quickly” Bucky answered simply. Ah, now it all made sense.
As Bucky unlocked the room for the night, you grimaced taking it all in. Wallpaper peeled off the walls and the carpet was stained with various splatters. (Of what, you didn’t want to know.) The furniture looked old and had clearly been abused over the years by how they barely held together.
Bucky let out a grunt as he tossed his bag to the ground.
“I’ll take the floor.”
“Why would you-” you paused before glancing at the bed.
It was a full sized mattress, easily enough to accommodate you and him, but the thought of sleeping in the same bed brought a flush to your face. Apparently he felt similarly as he took a pillow and threw it to the ground. “Like I said, I’ll take the floor.”
“We’re adults. We can just share the mattress” you reasoned. There was no reason the two of you couldn’t sleep in the same bed. After all, you did it with Clint for a previous assignment. Granted, he passed out without thought after almost getting shot multiple times. But things weren’t in a strange stage between you and Hawkeye the way they were with you and Bucky. The two of you teetered a polite line, unsure about crossing over into a friendship zone.
After a bit of back and forth, he finally conceded to sleep in the same bed. With you. You sucked in a deep breath, reminding yourself that this wasn’t a big deal. People shared beds all the time.
As he tossed the pillow back onto the bed, you slipped into pajamas in the bathroom before getting onto the other side of the mattress. Turning on your side, you faced the wall willing yourself to fall asleep fast. Squeezing your eyes shut, you tried to think about anything but the man sharing the bed with you.
The sound of light whirring prompted you to sit up quickly. Had the Serbians returned? Did they know they had been bugged? The worst flooded your mind.
“What is that?” you asked looking around.
“AC” Bucky grunted. You looked over at the man now in his undershirt and boxers sliding into the bed, his weight causing the mattress to creak.
It was the middle of winter, the weather crisp and chilly. Forecast even called for snow. What person would turn on the AC in those conditions? Apparently Bucky Barnes would.
As soon as his eyes shut, you snuck out of bed and crept to the thermostat. Immediately you shut off the AC and cranked up the heat. If you were going to be sleeping in this poor excuse of a hotel room, you at least wanted to be warm.
Sneaking back, you quietly slipped the sheet over yourself. A couple seconds later the bed lightened and feet padded across the room.
“Bucky, what are you doing?”
“Adjusting the temperature.”
“And why would you do that?”
“Because I prefer the cold.” He made it sound so simple, like the possibility of freezing to death wasn’t an option.
“Don’t you dare touch that thermostat” you growled. Bucky looked you dead in the eye as he adjusted the settings and cranked on the AC.
You rushed over with a scowl, crossing your arms. “It’s freezing outside! Why would you turn this on?”
“Because I sleep better in the cold.”
He insisted he needed the cold air or he wouldn’t be able to sleep. He offered his sweater, which you argued you wouldn’t need if he just turned the air conditioning off. He shook his head as he listed off other suggestions.
“Take the whole blanket then.”
“I’m not doing that.”
“Why not?” He cocked his head to the side. It was his turn to cross his arms.
“Because I’m not a monster who steals the sheets, Barnes!” This earned you a raised eyebrow. All these new sides to Bucky’s usual polite front would’ve intrigued you if you weren’t so focused on staying warm. You groaned realizing this was going nowhere. Eventually you resolved to just borrowing his clothes.
He plucked it from his duffel, tossing it your direction. You pulled it on before grimacing. “Bucky, there’s blood on this.”
“Is there?” Were blood stains on his clothing a normal occurrence that he could sound so casual about the matter?
“I’m not sleeping in a sweater that has your blood on it” you scoffed, observing the stain.
“Don’t think that’s my blood, doll.”
You swore at him as you yanked it off, throwing the clothing at him roughly. “Now I’m definitely not wearing that!”
Still pouting you crawled under the cover, curling up to keep heated. As Bucky shifted, he pulled the blanket closer to him and coincidentally pulling some fabric from you.
“Barnes” you groaned, yanking the sheet towards you. With his tight grip, it merely rustled the fabric. “There’s only one sheet. If you got to have your way on the temperature, you can at least share the blanket.”
He faked a snore - one so painfully obvious - that you groaned louder. You smacked him in the shoulder and he opened his eyes smiling innocently. “Sorry, I must’ve fallen asleep from how comfortable this is.”
Your teeth chattered as you glared. He merely smirked in return, comfortably settling himself into the bed.
“You’re really enjoying yourself, aren’t you?” you scowled pulling the sheet once more to no avail.
“A little” he shrugged.
Thwack! You smacked him in the face with your pillow. It was a bit childish but so was this whole debacle.
“Did you just-” he asked startled before you hit him with the pillow again.
You shrieked as he swung his own at you. The next thing you knew, both of you were hitting one another with pillows before falling back and bursting into laughter.
The giggling subsided as he leaned over, arm digging into the mattress as he hovered above you. It was closer than the two of you had been all evening. So close that his breath gently fanned your face. “Friends don’t hit each other with pillows” his low voice caused you to shiver.
“Friends also don’t crank up the AC when it’s already freezing” you quipped back.
“So you admit we’re friends now?” Something flickered in his eyes as he looked at you. Something you couldn’t recognize but wanted to get lost in.
“Turn off the AC and then we’ll talk.”
The way those blue eyes flickered from yours down to your mouth had your heart pounding out of your chest. You wondered if he could hear it, how nervous you felt despite your casual words.
Bucky pulled away and stood up. The light from outside shone on his face as he turned off the air conditioning and adjusted the temperature. The whirring came to a halt and silence filled the room. You could hear everything so clearly now. The floor creaking as he walked back, the rustling of the cover, the mattress springs squeaking as he got back into bed.
You muttered a thanks, pulling the blanket around yourself. You turned towards the wall again, hoping he couldn’t see you blushing for whatever godforsaken reason.
“What are friends for?” he grinned before closing his eyes.
Loud knocking woke you the next morning. You lifted your head, struggling to get up. A couple more knocks and you finally opened your bleary eyes. They widened when you realized you had turned in your sleep and were now facing Bucky.
Studying his face, you understood why he would’ve been popular in his youth. Enough charm and a face like that would make anyone swoon. The temptation to brush the hair out of his face crept up in your mind, but you waved the idea away. Last thing you wanted was to explain your strange, sudden urge to touch him if he woke up.
The knocking came once more and to your surprise, Bucky breathed “Would you mind getting that?” How long had he been awake? His eyes remained close as he muttered a ‘please’.
Hurrying to the door, you peeked through the peep hole before swinging it open. The sun barely crept over the horizon as Natasha and Steve stood in front of you. The large quinjet only a couple feet away didn’t escape your vision. Natasha leaned on the door frame with her signature smirk as Steve peered into the room.
“Stark wasn’t kidding when he said it was a dump” Steve muttered as he shook his head.
“Better than Ankara” Natasha commented offhandedly as she stepped in. This was your cue to get dressed and collect your belongings. Within fifteen minutes you managed to make yourself presentable while the team made sure the room was properly swept. No trace that two Avengers member had been and slept there.
All of you walked towards the quinjet, ready to head back to the compound.
“How was the hotel, Buck?” Steve asked.
“Wasn’t half bad really” he yawned, stretching out his arms before scratching the top his head. His hand reached into his jacket procuring a bright pink hair tie. You dry swallowed as he bundled his hair together, eyes unable to focus on anything besides his hair. He turned back to you, and your face flushed knowing you had been staring.
“Wouldn’t you agree?” he asked, a cheeky smile rising to his face.
Biting down on your lip, you merely shrugged before he turned back to Steve to discuss the upcoming debrief.
Concentration was at an all time low on the ride back. Natasha spoke of an exchange between Scott and Tony and you nodded along barely paying any attention. Instead you replayed last night in your mind, wondering what this meant for you and the super soldier. Every so often you’d turn back to Bucky focusing on the band in his hair. It was clear you were more than colleagues at this point. But how he viewed you was still a mystery, one that struck your curiosity and one you wanted nothing more than to solve.

Renting A car - It's Not Just for Travel Any longer
Tumblr media
rent a car belgrade
It used to be that people rented an auto when they went on vacation and so they needed to get close to the metropolis. But now, people rent automobiles for an array of reasons. Someone does not need to be on vacation to rent a car. Some people get one for the special occasion. Maybe they are taking someone on a fancy day or taking someone out for his or her birthday or an anniversary. Luxury automobiles can be rented though they usually cost more than renting an everyday full size vehicle.
rent a car belgrade
For entrepreneurs, renting an automobile generally is a nice touch when taking an essential consumer out to meal or picking up someone from the airport. It shows that you are going the further mile to help the consumer sense at ease also to show that your company is professional and stylish.
If you are taking a road trip out of town but you don't desire to push your gas guzzling vehicle such for a truck or SUV, you may want to rent a compact automobile to save a few bucks. Gas can really incorporate up when you are driving a car that won't get very good gas mileage. Especially if you are going on an extended road trip. You can save loads of money by renting something with a smaller, more economical motor. Maybe you own a car that is not very reliable or has been in and out of the shop many times. You wouldn't want that vehicle to stop working while you are on a road trip or taking the family on a vacation. Getting stranded in an unfamiliar place is usually a very frustrating and stressful expertise. Not to mention it will put a giant wrench in your plans with the loved ones vacation. Instead, renting an auto will give you peace of mind that you will safely get there at your destination. Plus, depending on what type of car you rent, you may have more room and it may be considered a more comfy ride. People also rent vehicles to save on the wear and tear that traveling long distances puts on their vehicle. Maybe they don't need the additional mileage on their own motor vehicle.
If you need to move some furniture but do not own a truck, you may need to rent one. It may actually be much less expensive than hiring a shipping and delivery business to help move your furniture. Particularly if you might get the job completed in one afternoon. There are a few rental firms that can demand because of the hour or allow you to rent the auto for just a half working day.
Most towns have several auto rental firms with aggressive prices. You can perform a search online to examine rates and reserve an auto right over the internet. Some firms will actually come to your location and pick you up. This works out well if your motor vehicle is in the shop and you also have no way to get to the rental office.
Even though there are many reasons to rent an auto these days, you really never need a good reason. You can rent a car or truck only for fun and hit the road with friends or spouse and children. It's always fun to travel something different.

Beograd: window shopping
Today, i am ready with a little continuation of our Belgrade walking holidays in September. Now, every girl´s fav topic - shopping, and namely i'd like to show some interesting stuff spotted while walking along the historical center of Belgrade. Also, i want to mention that i had some really tough time passing by so many eye-catching things tempting me from nearly every shopwindow! The good thing is that even inexpensive things in Belgrade, be it clothes, shoes or accessories, do look tastefully! Sincerely, most of stuff I saw in the category had been like this. So, if you want a budget-friendly but smart shopping, welcome to Belgrade!ツ
Tumblr media
↑... i fell in love with this awesome rooster at first glance! Really, i was hardly coaxed to move on from the shopwindow! And though this time a giant art purchase wasn't in our plans, but it is now in my mind to be back for my rooster and take him with me! Please, dear anyone, don't buy it! Let it enliven the street... until i come!😇
Tumblr media
↑…here, in the window of a restaurant (unfortunatelly, i didn't remember the location:(, i was caught by these picturesque dry flower arrangements! Floristics is my big passion, so floral creations wherever displayed always have my attention.ツ
Tumblr media
↑... how beautiful is this collection of shabby chic goodies!? And yes, each time i can reasonably explain why i need pretty every single piece showcased in front of me, and how & where i would use it! At least, "it being another one creative prop" sounds always like a good excuse...ツ
Tumblr media
↑... also, not far from the souvenir shop, there is an indoor flea market where you can find any kind of treasure imaginable!!
Tumblr media
↑... as you may guess, i am in l💗ve with this painting! Alas, my photography can't show it, but the painting was obviously done in some special technique which my untrained eye couldn't guess... I was captivated by the colours and the incredible lightness of... drawing!;
Tumblr media
↕... the Victorian in me was so excited at the sight of this fine cutlery, vessels, mirrors and purses!!
Tumblr media
↕... there followed a space where antique furniture, lighting and statuettes were displayed for sale.
Tumblr media
↑... always loving antique and vintage lamps; and such wash jug and a bowl is my one little dream! ↑... [s e c o n d   p i c ] i love this richly framed roses and a striped chair together! such a lovely corner!
Tumblr media
↑... as far as my amateur acquaintance with historical design styles may allow me to judge, this curved.... drawer (correct me if this is not quite proper word for it) belongs to Art Nouveau epoch. ツ We spent there some time indulging in contemplation of all that Beauty, but there came a time when we had to continue our walk...
Tumblr media
↑… but, on our way back to the hotel, there was waiting for us, as a little consolation prize, -- an antiquarian shop, located somewhere in the same, Kneza Mihaila, street. This prettiest armchair with English-style roses is nothing but a dream! ……… Well, now leaving you, hopefully inspired by all these treasures, and see you soon! 😎

The First Thing to Do When You Enter a Hotel Room, and Other Travel Tips

The First Thing to Do When You Enter a Hotel Room, and Other Travel Tips
Tumblr media
Designer Karim Rashid is known for his sexy but simple designs, such as the Bobble water bottle or the Garbo plastic trash can. His next project is a new wine bottle for Stratus Vineyards.
He describes his style as "sensual minimalism" and calls his products "blobjects." His love of pink and white appears not only in those products but also in his own wardrobe, which consists almost exclusively of white, pink, and a few bright yellow clothes. His latest project includes the new integrated architecture and design firm, Kurv. He logs around 400,000 miles in the air each year and has several million miles banked on each airline alliance. “I’m on Aeroflot a lot this year, as I’m working in Russia.” He also spends 180 nights, or half the year, staying in hotels.
How to Make Your Own Coffee on a Plane.
America has a history of bad coffee—all the airlines, whoever they are, the coffee is atrocious. And I love coffee, I’m completely addicted, so I carry organic single-serve powdered coffee with me—it’s basically freeze-dried, instant coffee. So I get a cup of hot water from the cabin crew and use that—sometimes I order a half-cup of hot milk, too, so I can make a strong latte, which I love. There was one woman beside me on a plane complaining about the coffee, so I handed her one of my packets. When we disembarked, she thanked me profusely, I don’t know how many times.
How to Ensure You Always Have Something Interesting to Do at Night

Kraftwerk performs in Düsseldorf.

I always check the Bandsintown app when I book a trip to a city to see what bands are playing when I’m there. When I get to a city, I can just open my phone and know who’s playing that night, the location, and its distance from my hotel, and buy tickets on the app. I’ve seen some amazing concerts in Berlin (Pink Floyd), Stockholm (XX), London (the Killers), Kiev (Disclosure), Milan (GusGus), Moscow (Tesla Boy), Belgrade (Air), Düsseldorf (Kraftwerk), and on and on.
How to Unpack: Just Fill up One Drawer
When I design hotels I don’t put any storage anywhere except the main area—that’s the one closet where you can put everything. If there are drawers in the bedside cabinet, so many cupboards, even an over-the-top TV console that is also a cupboard? It’s so unnecessary, and you end up leaving things behind or losing them. The cleaner the room is, the more minimal it is, the lower the chance you’ll leave anything behind.
The First Thing to Do When You Get Into a Hotel Room
Tumblr media
A room inside the Hudson Hotel
Source: Hudson Hotel
The hotel industry loves to fill rooms up with things, which comes from the idea that a hotel room is an extension of your home. But for me, it’s too much stuff, too much clutter. If I’m going to spend three days in there, I need to be really free and able to think. I take every piece of paper, every note or book, and put it in drawers to hide them. I don’t like visual clutter. And in the bathroom, too—there’s a crazy amount of stuff they shove in there. The worst for this is the W hotels: There are so many Ws around everywhere, on everything—the desk, pen, the pad, the soap, it’s too much. Once, when I was staying for two weeks at the Hudson Hotel in New York, which Philippe Starck designed in the late 1990s, I removed almost all the furniture and rearranged the bed. It was up against the window, with the light behind you, and you want to wake up looking at daylight coming in through the window. When I left, the manager came to me and said, ‘Thanks, we really like what you did with the room.’
How to Truly Make Sure You Remember a Place: Get a Tattoo
It started 25 years ago, when I got my first tattoo in Toronto. After I moved to New York, and I started getting busier, traveling, it became a habit, a present to myself: I consider each of them a poetic memory of places [where] I’ve spent a lot of time. To date, I’ve done 26 in 26 different cities. There’s a guy in Istanbul, Emre Dizici, near Taksim Square, who is really fantastic; he’s been practicing for almost 30 years. Japan was the hardest place to get one done, as it’s still frowned upon [as a symbol of organized crime]—in fact, I was recently at an Intercontinental hotel there, and they wouldn’t let me in the swimming pool because of my tattoos. I found my tattoo artist there when I went for a drink with a young guy I was working with; he rolled up his sleeves and showed me his tattoos and told me not to tell anyone at the office he had them—and then recommended his tattoo artist.

(Day 13 of 2017)
Woke up at Shaina's and went to meet Tori at Walters Coffee in Bushwick. Sat there writing about my week for most of the day and then realized I hadn't eaten so I made place to meet Maria Damon at Bedouin Tent. Afterwards Maria payed me to move some furniture around her new apartment. On the way there I found a lamp in the trash that had three glass spheres with holes through them so I took the lamp back to Maria's and cut the cord to get the spheres off.  I then took an hour long train ride across Brooklyn to met up with an AirBNB host. He was a Serbian man who lives between here and Belgrade. We talked about immigration issues for an hour or so. I took a shower and then hung out alone reading the internet for a few hours till Kristiana arrived.

Driving all the way from Monaco to the City of Lights
We packed our car and left Monaco Friday morning on December 23, 2017, heading for Beaune in the heart of Burgundy. More than 6 hours later we arrived to Hostellerie Le Cedre, got installed in our beautiful and comfortable room, and immediately went out for a stroll in the charming village of Beaune. We bought some excellent bottles of wine from our friend Johan Björklund who owns L’Hotel de Beaune (that unfortunately was closed during the holiday season), the Bistro and the Wine shop, of course. Back at our hotel we had drinks by the fire followed by a delicious gourmet dinner at their Michelin recommended restaurant Le Clos du Cedre.
Early next morning we were on our way to the City of Lights, arriving around midday to the apartment we rented on rue de Belgrade on the 7th arrondissement, with a view of the Eiffel Tower. (Photo insert: The Eiffel Tower on our arrival to Paris @CelinaLafuentedeLavotha)
We love the location for many reasons, but especially because we have a great boulangerie nearby and is just a few blocks from Rue Cler, the most famous market street in Paris! There you find a selection of fresh produce, specialty food stores, patisseries, butchers, delicatessens, cheese specialists, fishmongers, greengrocers, flower shops and cafes. For the main shopping we went to the Grande Epicerie de Paris, but there were so many people at this time of the year that we went only once, preferring a daily visit to Rue Cler.
This legendary street is pedestrian and still has its original cobblestones. It is where the locals go to buy their favorite foods, stroll or hang out on a café terrace to watch the world go by. My husband who loves to cook believes that when in Paris staying near rue Cler is an absolute must!

I decorated the apartment for Christmas while my husband prepared delicious meals, but we also went for lunch to L’Esplanade near Pont Alexandre, L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon, and to Café Flore and Les Deux Magots for tea and the typical Croque Monsieur. On Christmas Day we had lunch at Ralph’s and visited their boutique of course. That same evening we went to a very heartwarming Vivaldi Concert at La Madeleine with the orchestra of Les Violons de France. It was sublime!

We welcomed the New Year in style with a black-tie dinner at the sumptuous apartment of friends of friends on the Quai de Louvre overlooking the Seine River. Our hosts were lovely and dinner delicious! On New Year’s Day we met dear friends at the legendary Brasserie Lip, so Parisian! The rest of the time we walked around Paris, with an umbrella because it was raining on and off with sunny spells!

The highlight of our trip was the chance to visit two important couture exhibitions and the Louis Vuitton Foundation.
Paris is couture and couture is Paris
Thanks to the help from a very influential art connoisseur from the Principality we were invited to the two main couture exhibitions in Paris: Yves-Saint Laurent and Christian Dior. We not only avoided the very long lines, but had the privilege of being treated to a private visit!
An intimate glimpse into YSL’s fantastic universe
The Yves Saint Laurent Museum is on 5 Avenue Marceau in the 16th, where YSL blossoming business moved on July 14, 1974, a magnificent Napoleon III-style mansion (“hotel particulier” in French). The haute couture house that had over two hundred people working on a daily basis, closed in October 2002 and became the Fondation Pierre Berge – Yves Saint Laurent, recognized of public interest later that year. Its main mission is to conserve and promote Saint Laurent’s legacy of thousands of designs and the many records related to their creation, celebrating the creative mind of one of the greatest fashion designers of the 20th century.
Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge had an unique relationship and together they created and ran a high fashion house making into an empire. It was Saint Laurent who described their couple as “that great eagle with two heads who navigated the seas, transcended boundaries, and invaded the world with its unparalleled scope, that was us.” They also gathered one of the world’s most important private art collections, auctioned off by Berge in the “sale of the century” in 2009 at the Grand Palais, in Paris. (Photo insert: Portraits of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge @YSL archives)
The exhibition starts on the ground floor housing the Haute Couture salons where the designer welcomed his clients for private appointments after the introduction of each collection, with each client assigned a personal sales attendant to oversee the fittings before the final tailor-made attire was finalized. Fashion shows were also held here, but in 1976 were moved to the Inter-Continental Hotel where they became fantastic spectacles with music.
The first section of the exhibition gathers the designs that became YSL’s signature style, each one appropriated from menswear adapted and adjusted to the feminine figure, combining clean lines and elegance. YSL created these pieces in 1970 coinciding with the women’s liberation campaign.

The exposition continues with the history of a collection, season after season, with countless of sketches the designer made that were later transferred to his ateliers together with the fabric swatches, classified according to specific type: suite, dress, or coat. A collection consisted of approximately one hundred designs with accessories, reflecting the artist’s inspiration, mood, and era. YSL collaborated with highly skilled artisans such as weavers, dyers, printers, embroiderers, goldsmiths and silversmiths, with creations that needed hundreds of hours of work that resulted in unique masterpieces. (Photo insert: Heart by YSL (the heart became his symbol) @CelinaLafuentedeLavotha)
YSL’s Studio was central to the mansion, as a contrast with the magnificent salons, bright, quiet, neutral space with a mirrored wall, was the perfect environment for him to create. In the bookshelves you find the publications that were his source of inspiration, and the mirrored wall allowed him to study the model’s reflection from all angles.

Christian Dior and his timeless legacy
The Decorative Arts Museum in Paris, on Rue de Rivoli near the Louvre, celebrated the 70th anniversary of the creation of the Christian Dior design house, with a complex, extraordinary and intense exhibition costing over 10 million Euros. The last retrospective dedicated to the designer took place in 1987 at the same museum, focusing on ten years of the couturier’s designs (1947-1957). This objective of this new exhibition was to invite the visitors to discover the world of his founder and those who superseded him: Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferre, John Galiano, Raf Simons and recently Maria Grazia Chiuri.
Dior was a leading figure in the world in the 20th century fashion when he launched his New Look spring/summer collection in 1947, changing the direction of the feminine shape, leaving in the past the masculine silhouette of the war years, by bringing flowing curves and the bearing of a classical ballet dancer. Dior said: “My prime inspiration is the shape of the female body.” Dior’s were loyal to his desire to “make women happier and more beautiful,” perpetuating his legacy and spirit, enhancing harmony of elegance, splendor and simplicity.

The selection of more than 300 magnificent haute couture robes, created from 1947 to the present, connect with emotions, stories and inspirations. Standing alongside there are workshop paintings, fashion photographs, and hundreds of illustrations, sketches, letters, manuscripts, plus fashion objects such as hats, jewels, bags, perfume flacons. Christian Dior was a passionate of art and loved museums, so that his creations blend in with the paintings, furniture and art objects.

Louis Vuitton Foundation an architectural marvel
We also visited the Louis Vuitton Foundation that this time around was showcasing a selection of 200 works tracing MoMA’s collection history. It was really interesting, but I have to confess that every time we are in Paris with visit the LV Foundation especially for its architectural design, so the photos I show will center on this architectural marvel. The photos speak by themselves.
