"I did it all by myself..."
Owen Hart. Was he my favorite wrestler as a kid? No. Did I like him? Yes. I'm not one of the many who claim he was always my favorite. Maybe it's true with some, but I feel it's usually said because fans feel guilty for not acknowledging him when he was here. I wonder if they believe showing him more support would have gained him a bigger push. A push that would have prevented Owen from being placed back in The Blue Blazer gimmick. Of course, we know now it wouldn't have mattered. Shawn Michaels didn't want Owen in the spotlight so Vince McMahon granted his wish. Stone Cold Steve Austin didn't want to work with him again. There was no other choice but mid-card status. Besides, Owen Hart himself didn't care about being a main eventer because it would cut down on time to go back home to his family.
In a previous post, I spoke on being a fan of Davey Boy Smith, but none of the kids I knew cared anything about him. Same went for Owen. The only time he was mentioned was a couple of days after "Over the Edge". Very few of my classmates had their parents order pay-per-views. None were ordered for me, and I had to settle on VHS rentals from Blockbuster and Movie Gallery. The next episode of Raw was the way we learned about the accident.
In the months prior to his death, my main focus was Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, and Chyna. I didn't have much interest in Owen's companionship with Jeff Jarrett like I did when he had Davey Boy Smith by his side. I liked Jeff Jarrett's in-ring abilities but didn't care much for his character. Debra wasn't that attractive to me, and her teasing Owen and Jeff's opponents with her "puppies" was annoying. The last thing involving Owen that sparked my interest was his feud with Ken Shamrock.
Owen Hart's passing was the first "celebrity" death that upset me. This man I watched perform week after week died in front of thousands of people. How could a stunt which I saw executed hundreds of times in not only wrestling but movies and other tv shows be so poorly handled? It was strange. I started to rent more VHS tapes featuring Owen. Searched his name on the internet when I visited my sister's apartment. It didn't take long reading about the real Owen to realize what a good-natured person he was.
Owen Hart isn't overrated when fans say he was an excellent wrestler who still deserves praise. However, Owen is overrated when it comes to saying he was better than Bret. As far as mat skills, Owen did outshine his big brother, especially matches prior to working for the WWF. Plus, his move set was more exciting. I'd rather see a missile dropkick than a figure four around a ring post. The enziguri needed to be his finisher instead of the sharpshooter though. The simple act of dropping it from his arsenal might have made Owen stand out more to fans and move him even further out of Bret's shadow.
Now I'm going to seem like I'm contradicting myself because of my previous post concerning Davey Boy Smith. I said Bret, Owen, and Davey weren't "characters". They didn't portray wrestlers who seemed like they could only exist on television, but they still had their on-screen personas. Bret had Owen beat by a long shot when it came to his character. Bret brought realism to being a tough guy. Owen came across as a loudmouthed punk. He was funny as a heel, but his babyface Blackhart gimmick wasn't that great. It was awesome to see Owen earning victories without sneaking in low blows or outside interference coming to his aid, but his interview segments were stale. He was overdramatic and yelled like he did as a heel. His natural voice was deep and raspy, but anyone who has heard Owen yelling knows he sounded nasally and cartoonish. Speaking and acting calmly like Bret did would have made things more convincing instead of unintentionally funny. Owen's threats about making life Hell for DX and constant talk of breaking Triple H's legs made him look pathetic as they manhandled and cheated him out of victories. The Hitman didn't make threats. He just went out to the ring, did his thing, and whatever happened happened.
Owen lost to Bret when it came to work ethic. Owen had good intentions putting on purposely bad matches for his co-workers to make them laugh, but I'm sure it confused and irritated them to some degree as well as the audience. Bret was serious about his work and always put forth one hundred percent. I know we all fuck up, but let's not forget the injury Stone Cold Steve Austin endured because of Owen. I'll get it over with. Owen not apologizing to Stone Cold was a shitty decision. There's one thing to remember. We all have times in our lives when we intentionally or unintentionally do something horrible to someone, and our embarassment and guilt hinders us from reaching out. I don't think any of us have always apologized. I know I haven't. And yes, I know Stone Cold caused the same injury five years before, but that's not the point. Bret truly was a professional.
I liked Owen Hart while Bret is my favorite wrestler. If I were a wrestler, I would want to carry myself the way Bret did. He might be my favorite wrestler, but I don't watch his matches non-stop. If I want to watch an old match, it usually includes Owen. He's just fun to see in action. Every move he made was performed with such ease.
"How do I want them to remember me? Well, I don’t want to become one of those watered-down guys, who just walked and talked in the ring. I want them to remember me as a guy who was diverse in his talents, could fight anybody and have a good match, whether it was Undertaker, or Vader. These big giant guys, I remember thinking, how can I have a good match with them, and coming back and saying, wow, those people were really entertained. They really thought that I had a chance to beat Vader or beat the Undertaker. And that’s going against the odds, when you’re 5’10”, 220 pounds fighting a guy that’s 6’7″, 320 pounds, or Vader that’s 6’4″, 400 pounds. How am I going to go up there and convince these people that I’ve actually got a chance of winning? When you go out there and even beat them, people believe it, that’s unbelievable, you know. It’s kind of an art to going out and performing. I’d like fans to remember me as a guy who would go out and entertain them, give them quality matches, and not just the same old garbage every week."
Owen Hart succeeded.

A Winter's Tale
Written as a gift for @justmeandmygayships for the @ts-winter-fic-exchange. I hope you like it! :) And check out @braingoburr's super cute fan art he drew for this story! (zoom!)
CW: swearing, Remus-typical innuendo (surprise), enemies-to-lovers, past divorce, happy ending - WC: 5662 - [ AO3 ] Playlist available on Spotify.
“Roman, are you quite certain I am at the correct cabin?” Logan trudged through the snow, the weight of his duffel bag seeming to increase with each step up the winding driveway. The rental car he’d reserved had heated seats, four-wheel drive, and snow tires.
The rental car he’d received barely had enough chassis clearance to avoid scraping the axles on every speed bump in the parking lot, let alone anything better than nearly bald tires, rear wheel drive, and a sub-optimal heating system. The car had skidded out at the bottom of the hill, forcing Logan to finish his journey on foot. At this point, Logan considered himself lucky to have made it up to the Prince family's old winter cabin in one piece.
“Really, Roman… I don’t see your truck up here.” Logan squinted against the glare coming off the fresh snow. It had snowed all night, which was another reason why Logan had arrived late to Xenia—and the car rental office—in the first place. His connecting flight out of Austin had been delayed, forcing him to spend the night in a cold terminal.
Ironically, the Tom Hanks movie with the same name had played on a loop on the large screen near his boarding gate. Someone in that airport had a sick sense of humor.
“Trust the magic. I can see where you dropped a GPS pin on my phone. Lo, you’re in the right place. Look up, I bet you can see smoke coming from the chimney.” Roman laughed as his best friend audibly gasped over the phone. “See? I told you, Professor.”
Logan sighed. “Alright, alright, I will trust The Magic next time. I do think I still should throttle you, though. You have a giant pickup truck. Tell me again why you couldn’t drive me here from the airport?”
“Because then I wouldn’t have been able to get your little surprise ready,” Roman’s voice was thick with a barely contained laugh.
Logan stopped walking. “I don’t like surprises, Roman.” He looked around the snow on the path. No footprints, no signs of odd trip wires or fake trees, no drone-operated fireworks… Just because he’s done it once, doesn’t mean that’s how he’d do it again, Lo.
“You’ll find out in just a minute.” Roman purred over the line, each day he spent with his new husband serving to increase the degree to which they sounded alike. “Just stay on the phone, okay?”
“Roman, what have you—” Logan grit his teeth when he was interrupted by Roman’s laughter.
“Just knock on the door, Lo….”
Sighing heavily, he snapped into the phone. “Fine, Roman, I’m knocking on the door!” He banged the ornate brass knocker several times. “Do you hear that? And then I am going to use up all of the hot water with a long shower and—” His voice died away when the door opened and there stood, not Roman, but Roman’s twin brother, Remus.
Logan’s ex-husband Remus.
“Surprise!” Roman cooed into the phone. “Enjoy your holiday!”
“Is that Ro?” Remus asked, arms crossed in front of him.
Logan held out the phone, Roman’s deep belly laugh clearly audible from a few feet away. “He’s your brother.”
“He’s your best friend.”
“He was certainly your brother before he was my friend.”
“Oh knock that shit out right now.” Roman said over the phone.
Rolling his eyes, Logan tapped on the screen. “You are on speaker phone, Roman. Care to explain yourself?”
“Yeah, what the fuck do you think you’re doing, Ro?
“I am sick and tired of listening to the two of you continue to talk about each other every single day.” Logan’s eyes widened and he adjusted his glasses as he looked down, stomping the snow off his boots. Remus didn’t notice. He’d looked away, his scowl deepening. “It was annoying enough before you got married, and then I guess it was kinda cute while you were married, but now it’s back to annoying again.”
Roman paused over the phone, and Logan and Remus looked at the phone instead of each other. “‘Skip to the song already, it’s getting boring.’”
The former couple yelled at Roman at the same time, voices overlapping.
“Yeah, thanks a lot, Mels!,” sneered Remus “Don’t use a Doctor Who reference against us,” Logan snapped.
“Thank you both for making my point.” Roman said, one layer of the joviality gone from his voice. “Look. Logan, your flight back to LA isn’t for a week—”
Glancing up at Remus, he interrupted. “I can change my flight.”
“Yes, but you won’t because it’s non-refundable and you would consider it an egregious waste of money to make the change simply because of a little emotional discomfort.”
Remus chuckled, “It’s almost like he’s met you before.”
“And you, Re.” Remus tightened his arms across his belly. “You aren’t going anywhere because you still can’t drive until you get re-authorized”—Logan’s brow furrowed and he watched Remus out of the corner of his eye—”and I’m not picking up your gremlin ass early.”
Again Roman grew quiet over the phone and Logan thought he heard quiet murmuring in the background. Apparently Roman wasn’t the only one on speakerphone. “Just enjoy your vacation. It’s a beautiful cabin. It’s been below zero degrees all December, so there’s ice skating on the lake, and plenty of firewood out in the woodshed, plus a backup generator. The kitchen is stocked and there are two bedrooms if you insist on doing things the stupid way.”
“Re, I’ll pick you up in a week.” Roman let out one more little laugh. “I’ll be sure to knock first.” Scoffing, Logan ended the call.
“Thanks,” Remus muttered, jerking his chin toward the phone. He half-raised his hand toward Logan’s duffel bag. “Do you want a hand—”
“I can handle it,” Logan snapped. The canceled flight, the disaster of the rental car, the cold, the snow, and Roman’s surprise all caught up with him at once. “I’m not a complete weakling.”
“Dammit, Lo, I didn’t fucking say that. I just offered to—” Remus rubbed the back of his neck and blew out a long breath. “Yeah, whatever.” He stormed off somewhere in the cabin and Logan turned around to close the door.
“‘Yeah, whatever,’ indeed.” Logan muttered to himself. He sighed, untangling his scarf from his neck, wincing as a clump of wet snow slipped down his coat. “Fuck, it’s going to be a long week.”
~~~~~
As the afternoon stretched into the evening, hunger drew both men out of their self-imposed isolation and they found themselves together in the kitchen, awkwardly poking around the pantry and the refrigerator.
“Well, Ro certainly planned ahead,” Remus muttered, fishing through the vegetable bin before closing the refrigerator door.
Logan was checking cans in the pantry. “Hm… Indeed,” he hummed. Remus chuckled, quietly mouthing ‘indeed’ with a little smile. “It appears that there are the raw ingredients for well over a week’s worth of meals, however…”
“However, everything requires a fuckton of prep.”
Logan poked his head out from the pantry, lips twitching. “Eloquent,” he finally said.
Remus gave him a little bow. Logan watched Remus for a moment as he pulled open the freezer drawer and rooted around, then shook his head and returned to the pantry. “I could make a stir fry for tonight. That’s pretty quick. And there’s some chicken already defrosted in the fridge.” He pulled a package of chuck beef from the freezer. “And maybe do some prep for a stew for tomorrow night.”
“You always did make a nice stew,” Logan said quietly.
Remus stood up and leaned toward the pantry. “Say again?”
“I’ll chop the vegetables,” he said, closing the pantry drawer and moving to the sink to wash his hands.
~~~~~
After dinner cleanup was done, they settled in opposite ends of the living room, the warmest room in the house. Logan finished counting the splits of wood then looked out the window. “At the rate at which we are consuming firewood, we will likely need to replenish this stock before tomorrow night.” He adjusted his glasses and glanced toward Remus, who’d put down the book he’d been reading, listening to Logan. He cleared his throat. “Well, the weather is clear right now.” He shrugged. “It would behoove us to gather more before the need is urgent and while the weather holds.”
Remus put down his book and stood. “Sure thing, Lo—gan. I’ll get my coat.”
The pair left through the back door of the cabin. Stepping down from the porch, Logan was surprised when his first step left him in snow nearly up to his knee. “The snow is significantly deeper back here than in the front of the house.”
Remus smiled sadly, looking around the small clearing between the cabin and the trees lining the trail to the lake. “Yeah. It’s the way the wind blows coming off the lake. Creates these big snow drifts back here.” He pointed to a tree with a thick, low branch about chest-high. “One year, the snow covered that branch and Ro and I climbed up there and pelted our cousins with snowballs.” Remus laughed and Logan smiled, looking up at the tree.
“You used to talk about this place quite a bit.” Remus’ smile shrank at Logan’s words and he shoved his hands in his pockets. “I regret we never made it up here while…”
“Yeah,” Remus said. He pointed to a small dark spot about ten yards away. “The woodshed’s up there.”
They were still a few feet away, trudging through the knee-deep snow, when they spotted the shiny new combination lock on the shed. “Oh, fuck no, Ro.” Remus swore, taking out his phone. Roman answered on the third ring. “What’s the combination, Ro?”
Logan stood to the side, shivering slightly, arms wrapped around himself.
“Fine, you’re on speaker phone.” Remus rolled his eyes. “Oh, tell us, oh great one, what the fucking combination is!”
Roman’s warm laugh did nothing to chase away the chill. “I will happily send you the combination… after you send me pictures of both of you ice skating.”
“Roman! It is negative eighteen degrees centigrade” Logan finally hissed.
“Dammit, Ro. This isn’t a fucking game,” Remus swore.
His laugh fell away. “I know.” He let them sit in silence for a while before continuing. “Look. I know how much you both enjoy ice skating. This isn’t meant to torture either of you. It’ll be fun. You’ll see.”
~~~~~
The following morning, Logan’s attention had been focused on his weather app as they ate breakfast together. He scrolled through the hourly forecast, finishing a bite of his oatmeal before glancing up at Remus just in time to catch him refilling his coffee cup. He narrowed his eyes. “Have you been doing that all morning?”
Remus covered a smirk with his own cup and shrugged. “What, you’re picking today to cut back on caffeine?”
“Well, no.” He shifted in his seat, crossing his legs before taking a sip of the freshly hot coffee. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” Remus tore the crust off his toast and took a bite. “So what does your app say?”
“We’ll have the best chance of avoiding the worst of the windchill if we leave for the lake after lunch.” Logan put down his phone, eyes still trained down at his place setting. He finished his coffee and rose to clear his dishes. “Thank you for breakfast…” He looked down at his cup. “And the coffee. I’ll make breakfast tomorrow.” He brought them to the sink, calling back over his shoulder. “If you clear your place, I’ll wash up.”
“Nah,” Remus drawled. “Imma leave ‘em out so we get rats in here.”
“Remus!” Logan said, spinning around, coming face-to-face with Remus as he offered his empty dishes with a cocked eyebrow.
“Wow, you’re easy.” He waggled his eyebrows. “But not as easy as you were—”
“Remus!” Logan snapped again. “If we’re going to be stuck together all week, I am going to have to ask you to refrain from those kinds of comments.” He turned back to face the sink. “Please.”
“Sure, Logan. It was just…” Remus crossed his arms and stepped back. “Never mind. I was gonna do sandwiches for lunch. Use the bread while it’s fresh then bake another loaf when we need it.” He stared at Logan’s back as he scrubbed the oatmeal pot. “See you then.”
After a minute, Logan turned around, mouth falling open to speak, but Remus was gone.
~~~~~
The pair ate lunch together, cleaned up, and made their way out to the frozen lake in near silence. The sat on a log near the edge of the ice and laced up their skates before stepping out gingerly. Logan frowned at the ice. “I have not actually been out skating since…” He looked down at his skates, tapping the toe pick and testing the tension of his laces. Logan risked a glance over at Remus, who was adjusting the cuffs on his gloves. “Well, since that time we saw the tree in New York.”
Remus nodded, a little smile pulling on the corner of his mouth. “That was something.”
It had been their last big trip before everything fell apart. At that time, neither Remus nor Logan had ever made it much further from their hometown than Cleveland, let alone out to either coast. It had become something of a drinking game between them since they were newlyweds. Anytime either of them spotted the tree or the rink in a film or television show, they would shout, “Tree!” and clink their glasses or mugs or, one time, ice cream cones.
And then, one year, for Logan’s birthday, Remus had surprised him with plane tickets to New York. They’d found a cheap AirBnB out in Queens, two miles from the nearest subway stop, and lived on bagels, cheap pizza, and dirty water dogs from street vendors. And coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.
On the last night they spent in New York, they’d skated together at Rockefeller Center, where the shining warmth of thousands of lights on the famous tree cast a glow over the couple that they’d carried with them long past the trip had ended.
“That was the last time for me, too,” Remus said at last. He sucked in a breath and clapped his hands together. “Well, let’s get out there. Um…” He blew into his gloved hands, sniffling against the cold. “How do you wanna do this?”
Logan re-fastened the top button of his peacoat and frowned. “I suppose we… each go out there and…” He waved his hand, shifting from one skate to the other. “And the other takes a picture?”
“Yeah. Yeah, that should work.” He looked down at Logan’s feet where they stamped in place. “You wanna go first?” Logan’s eyes flicked up at him, guarded. “C’mon, man, your skates look like they’re about to take flight.”
Logan looked out over the ice, eyes tracing the edge of the lake, fingers twitching at his sides. He looked like he had music playing in his head. Finally, he nodded. “That is acceptable.” He turned around and glared at Remus. “However, if I fall and you are tempted to laugh, you would do well to recall that I have an advanced degree in chemistry and know where you are sleeping tonight.” Face still stern, he winked, then pushed off onto the ice.
Remus watched as Logan started to skate. His first two pushes were tentative, a little softer than they needed to be, and at first he wobbled, but then he picked up speed and the wind whipped at his scarf and the fringe of his hair peeking out from underneath his wool beanie. Logan’s arms, initially tight, with his hands clasped behind his back, soon loosened, moving softly on either side of him as he skated in a wide, smooth ellipse over the border of the ice.
Logan looped around again, faster this time, adding little crossovers and bunny hops as he regained his confidence. Remus caught a bright smile splitting Logan’s face as he passed him, the scrape of the blades on the ice and the wind whistling through the trees the only sound. Soon, Remus’ smile matched Logan’s and he nearly forgot to take pictures.
Pulling out his phone, he got one of Logan just as he’d stretched out into a glide, his free foot almost parallel to the ice. A light dusting of snow began to fall and, with Logan spinning around on the ice, framed in the golden afternoon sun, Remus just snapped picture after picture, wishing he could capture this moment in a bottle and hold it forever.
After a while, Logan skated back to him, his breath rapid puffs of white, cheeks red, smile still curving his full mouth. “The ice is great.” His face grew serious as his breath slowed. He tilted his head toward Remus’ phone. “Did you get a photo to satisfy your brother?”
Remus chuckled, putting away his phone as Logan took out his. “Yes, I think I got something that will satisfy your best friend.” Remus stomped in his ice skates. His toes had gotten a little cold from standing still for so long and he wanted to get the blood flowing a bit more before attempting to skate. While they had a shared love of ice skating, the skill was heavily weighted on Logan’s side of their broken partnership.
“I’d say don’t laugh if I fall,” Remus tried to joke, his voice falling flat. “But we both know I’m gonna fall on my ass so… uh, just don’t laugh loudly enough that I can hear.” With that, he pushed off, taking little step-step glides across the ice. He avoided looking in Logan’s direction, afraid to see a smirk at his impression of a drunk baby fawn.
He’d made it half-way around the diameter of the lake when he fell for the first time, landing hard on his backside. He sat on the ice for a moment, grateful, at least, that he was far away enough from Logan to not be able to hear any laughter. He clambered to his feet, forgetting just how difficult it could be to get up again after falling on ice. Without, at least, someone’s hand to hold.
He kept skating, heading back to Logan and hoping he’d gotten enough pictures to satisfy his brother—and hopefully none of which included him on his ass. He’d just started to pick up speed again when he didn’t lift his foot high enough and his toe pick caught on the ice and he fell again, this time nearly face planting. His hands and his knees hurt, and so did his pride.
Remus managed to get his knees under him and back up on his shaky feet and had gotten another few yards before his legs just went to jelly and he went down again. He looked around. This side of the lake was bordered by a high snow embankment. The only way back from his position was across the ice.
Slower this time, he again got up and got only a few dozen yards before he wiped out again. He was really starting to feel the impacts on his knees and back.
He hung his head, trying to catch his breath before struggling to his feet again. Remus briefly imagined staying there until the ice thawed. The surface of the lake would crack around him and he’d just slip into the cold water. By then, he’d probably be too numb to even feel it, wouldn’t he? Just the water closing over his head, pulled down by the weight of his heavy skates and water-logged clothing.
The scrape of metal on ice nearby stirred him from his thoughts and he looked up. “Come to laugh where I can hear you?” he asked.
Logan didn’t speak, just examined his eyes and offered his hands, angling his own blades to brace himself against the ice. Remus closed his eyes. This was how they’d met.
Remus had been determined to learn how to ice skate and had shown up at “Beginners” hour at the local ice rink. Beginner Olympiads, maybe. After he’d been lapped by more eight-year-olds than he could count, Remus had tried to get off the ice, but had instead stumbled, falling into the path of one of the college-aged teachers. He’d stopped and pulled him to his feet and convinced him to keep trying.
Shaking away the memory, Remus took his hands as Logan, again, pulled him to his feet. “Thanks. I, uh… I hope you got Ro what he wanted out of this.”
Logan nodded, “Yes, I believe I did.”
~~~~~
It was nearly dark by the time they got back to the cabin. As they approached the back door, both of their phones buzzed. Roman sent the combination. Logan sighed heavily, eyeing the distance between the cabin and woodshed. “Perhaps, as long as we’re out here, it would be wise to gather a cord or two and bring it in?”
Remus stopped and nodded, covering a wince as his back twinged from the change in movement. He pocketed the woodshed lock after he opened the shackle. “Ro’s smoking crack if he thinks I’m not keeping this.” Logan chuckled as he helped Remus open the doors and piled several split logs into his arms.
“I fully endorse your minor larceny,” he muttered dryly. Arms full, they worked together to nudge the doors closed, latching them shut to protect the wood against the elements.
The pair trudged inside, laying the wood on a bench while they peeled off their damp coats, scarves and boots. Logan shivered as the wet edges of his trousers clung to his ankles. “We—I should change into dry clothes and hang these somewhere.”
“Yeah.” Remus stood up, his boots half-laced. “Um, Lo—Logan…” Logan turned around and Remus opened his mouth, but no words came out for a moment. “Th—thank you for—” he jerked his head toward the door. He licked his lips and shrugged, shoving his hands in his pockets. “Thanks.”
“You’re welcome, Remus.” Logan nodded and made his way to his room, shuddering at the cold blast that hit him as soon as he opened the door. He immediately tried to adjust the thermostat but couldn’t get the panel to activate. Swearing under his breath at the fragility of the fancy WiFi-connected system Roman had installed sometime last year, he walked down the hall to Remus’ room.
The door was open, so he knocked gently and opened it further. His room felt just as frigid. “Remus? Is your thermostat broken—” He let out a yelp and turned his back. Remus’ was already stripping off his wet clothes, dressed only in his boxers. “I—I—I apologize… I—”
Remus chuckled, “It’s okay Logan. I’m not naked. They’re like swim trunks,” he joked, referencing an old argument.
Narrowing his eyes, Logan swallowed back his usual counter argument that at a minimum, swim trunks couldn’t possibly be the same as boxers because they had two layers and not only one. Instead, Logan turned around, averting his gaze. Until, that is, he caught a glimpse of dark purple on Remus’ legs. He looked closer and saw dark red and purple bruises forming on Remus’ knees.
Logan met his eyes. “Oh, my god, Remus, are those from the ice?” He stepped closer.
Shrugging, he looked down at his legs. “Yeah, I think so. No wonder that last fall hurt like a motherfucker.” He turned around, unzipping his bag and pulling out a pair of heavy joggers.
Logan’s eyes widened again. More fresh bruises were blooming across his lower back and along his shoulder. “Remus, your back,” he whispered, face pained.
Twisting with a grimace to catch a glimpse of his back in the dresser mirror, he shrugged. “Yeah.” He raised his eyebrows and smirked. “Good to know I can still skate as well as I always could.”
“They look painful.”
“Eh,” Remus said as he dug through his clothes, finally pulled out a T-shirt.
“Wait,” Logan said, rushing from the room. He came back with a small tube of bruise cream. “Let me at least get your back.”
“Hey, what other goodies did you pack away?” Logan glared at him and made a turning motion with his finger. “Oh, I get it… You packed to spend the week with my brother… Thought things might get a little rough?” he cackled, smirk bright, but Logan caught something wounded behind his eyes in his reflection above the dresser. “That’s right. Keep it in the family.”
Logan scoffed, lips curled in disgust. “I am not interested in your bro—This is—” He scowled, but he didn’t miss how Remus’ shoulders relaxed when he said that he did not wish to pursue a romantic relationship with Roman. “It’s a basic first aid supply.” He jerked his thumb toward the door. “I can leave.”
“No,” Remus reached for his shoulder, smirk gone. “Please don’t go. I’m sorry.”
Nodding once, Logan uncapped the cream and spread some on his fingers. “This is cold, I apologize.” Remus flinched wordlessly when Logan touched it to his shoulder, gently rubbing it into the bruise. “That is actually what I came in here for. The thermostat in my room appears non-functional.” He looked at the panel on the wall and Remus followed his gaze. “It seems mine is not the only one.”
“The rest of the house seemed fine.” Remus met Logan’s eye in the mirror. “I can feel the heat coming in from the hallway.”
Nodding, Logan applied cream to another part of his shoulder. “It would appear your brother doesn’t want us in our rooms.”
“Yeah, better to let us annoy each other in the living room,” Remus laughed.
Logan applied more cream, starting on Remus’ lower back. He nodded. “Yes, I—” He caught Remus watching his expression in the mirror. Remus looked away. Focusing on the bruises, Logan murmured, “Yes, I suppose so.”
After a few minutes, Logan finished treating the bruises on Remus’ back, and he offered him the tube. “Here, for your knees. You can reach those, use as much as you need. I’ve got a back up.” He blushed, anticipating Remus’ usual joshing about his ‘just in case,’ back up supply of, well, everything.
Instead, Remus looked down at the tube. “Uh, w—would you? Um… It… kinda hurts to bend that way.” Logan raised an eyebrow with a deep frown. Stepping back, Remus raised his hands and shook his head. “Nothing dirty, I swear! I just… Never mind.” Remus sighed and reached for the tube.
“Sit,” Logan said. Remus sat down slowly on the edge of the bed, wincing as he moved. Logan tilted his head. “You were serious.”
Remus looked away and nodded. With the same diligence he’d used on Remus’ back, Logan applied the cream to the constellation of bruises along his knees and shins. When he was done, he stood up, capping the tube. “We should reapply after your next shower.”
“Thanks, Lo—gan. It actually feels a little better.”
He nodded, then gestured to Remus’ clothes. “I’ll let you change. I suppose I will see you by the fireplace.”
Remus let out a breathy laugh. “Yeah. Then we can call Ro and yell at him.”
“If we need to,” Logan said quietly as he stepped into the hall and closed the door behind him.
~~~~~
Logan and Remus decided to wait Roman out and delayed calling him until after dinner when they saw the thermostats in the bedrooms were still disabled. Remus rolled his eyes as they listened to his phone ring. “Ugh, son of a—”
“Your mother is a lovely woman,” Logan interrupted, a smile tugging at his lips despite the circumstances. “It’s not her fault Roman thinks he’s Loki.”
Remus laughed. “That’s quite the reference. I didn’t know you liked Marvel.”
“Comic books?” Logan shook his head. “No, the Norse trickster god.”
“You haven’t heard of Loki and the MCU? I know you’re above all—” Finally, Remus looked up from the phone and noticed Logan’s smirk. He laughed. “Alright, alright, you got me.”
“Give me some credit. I know about Marvel. I loved Heath Ledger’s performance—” Logan burst out laughing at the brief outrage that splashed across Remus’ face.
“Oh, ha ha ha,” Remus said, grinning as he tried to call Roman one more time.
Logan stood, looking around the room. “Given the advanced hour, I suspect we will need to spend the night out here.” He checked his weather app. “It’s due to go down to negative 21 centigrade.” He briefly met Remus’ eyes then looked away, scanning the couch and the area around the fireplace. “While it may be a… regrettable lack of privacy, the bedrooms will become dangerously cold tonight.”
Remus shrugged, getting up and plugging his phone into a charger in the kitchen. “You want something to drink?”
“I do not believe these are the best circumstances for alcohol, particularly this close to bedtime—”
He raised his hand, “I meant like hot chocolate, Mr. Rogers.”
“Oh,” Logan looked down, feeling his face flush. “I… Ah, yes. Hot chocolate sounds nice.”
~~~~~
While Remus prepared the drinks, Logan retrieved the pillows and blankets from their bedrooms. He made a nest for himself on the floor near the couch, then made up the large sofa with the blankets from Remus’ bed.
“Lo—” he began.
“Nope. No argument.” Logan crossed his arms in full strict teacher mode. “You are already bruised. You do not need to spend a night on the floor.”
Remus fidgeted with the bottle of vanilla extract. “Thanks, that’s… that’s really nice of you.”
“Basic courtesy,” Logan mumbled as he adjusted the pillows on the couch. He went back to his room and returned a few moments later with a thick book.
“You’re re-reading The Overstory,” Remus remarked.
Logan looked down at the book, blinking in surprise. “Yes, how did you—”
“I recognized the cover.” Remus poured the completed hot chocolate into the first mug.
Thumbing through the book, Logan shrugged. “It seemed appropriate… Given the venue.” He chuckled. “It was either this or Annihilation…”
Remus laughed. “I’m glad you chose The Overstory.” He put the now-empty pot in the sink and filled it with hot soapy water, then carried the two mugs to the coffee table. He sat down carefully, and picked up the book. “Do you remember when you read to me from this book… That year I had the flu?”
Logan’s mouth hung open for a moment before he consciously closed it. “I—I thought you were too sick to notice.”
Smiling sadly, Remus shook his head. “I probably didn’t get a lot of it, but… But yeah, I noticed. I liked it.”
They sat together in silence for a long while, Remus on the couch and Logan under the blankets on the floor. They sipped at their drinks and listened to the crackling fire and the wind whistling outside. Remus held the book in his lap, stroking the textured cover. Finally, Logan broke the silence. “Remus?”
He hummed, taking another sip of his drink and putting down the book. He looked at Logan.
“Yesterday, Roman said that you needed to be reauthorized to drive.” Remus clenched his jaw and stared down at his lap, mouth tight. “What was that about? Did you have another seizure?”
Remus looked away and tugged at his ear. “Yeah. I did.”
“It… it must have been some time ago to already potentially qualify for a re-authorization.” Logan frowned, counting months in his head. “It would’ve had to have been before we—” His eyes widened and he put down his mug. “Remus? You never told me you had a seizure. Wh—what happened? Were you—”
Remus shook his head and waved away Logan’s concerns. “I was fine. It happened at work. They brought me in, got me checked out. The no driving thing was the biggest hassle, but you know I don’t like to drive anyway, so…” He shrugged and drank more of his cocoa. “The worst that happened was a few crazy glue stitches in my hair and I got paint all over me from the mural I was working on.”
The crease in Logan’s forehead only increased. “But… how did I not notice you—” Logan froze, his voice falling away. He slowly looked up at Remus. “It was that night. That night you came home so ludicrously late. I was already in bed. You took a shower before you even said hello.” Logan paled, hugging his knees to his chest. “You made up some story about a flat tire and having to wait for AAA but… But it never showed up on the records.”
Remus looked down at his hands. “Yeah.”
“I thought—”
Remus looked away. “Yeah, I know what you thought.”
“But why didn’t you tell me the truth?”
“I didn’t want you to worry.”
“No, I mean… When you realized what I thought had happened… What I… What I accused you of…” Logan’s chest heaved as he rubbed at the blank spot on his ring finger. “When I filed for the divorce? Why didn’t you tell me then?”
Remus shrugged. “I figured that… that if you thought I could ever do something like that to you, that… That I was doing a really lousy job of… of loving you.” He swallowed the last of his drink and stared down into the mug. “I figured I should let you find someone better.”
Logan peeled back his blanket and moved to Remus’ side. He took his empty mug and placed it on the coffee table, then held both of his hands. “There’s no-one better than you.”
He reached over and wiped away a tear tracing down Remus’ cheek, then leaned in and whispered against his lips. “There is no-one better than you, Meus.”
Remus gasped at the old pet name, then wrapped his arms around Logan’s shoulders, their mouths coming together in a kiss, one year late and six days early.
If New York’s Madison Avenue is popularly regarded as the symbolic headquarters of the American advertising industry, then Times Square would surely be the showroom. Positioned at the very heart of the nation’s commercial capital, Times Square has long been a prized platform for the latest and greatest in spectacular outdoor advertising. As early as the 1910s, the area was renowned as what O.J. Gude, the pioneer of illuminated display, called a “phantasmagoria of lights and electric signs” (Taylor, 236) –– and, a hundred years later, Times Square still attracts crowds from around the world who flock to experience its distinctive blend of kinetic urban energy and promotional razzamatazz.
The vital blocks of Times Square between 44th and 46th streets have been an especially desirable focus for advertisers in their ongoing efforts to capture consumer attention with shock-and-awe ballyhoo. Over the decades these two blocks have been home to such promotional wonders as a gigantic neon sign with truck-sized bubble-blowing goldfish, an illuminated box of tissues woven out 25,000 light bulbs, towering bottles of soft drink four storeys tall, a Marilyn Monroe colossus, and, a 120-foot (36.6m) long waterfall flanked by a mammoth pair of neoclassical statues (Levi and Heller, iv; Shepherd, B5).
In 1956, the Arkraft Strauss Sign Corporation, New York City’s preeminent sign designer and manufacturer, consolidated a range of formerly separate advertising spaces above the western side of the block between 45th and 46th streets to create what was proudly proclaimed as “the biggest billboard in the world” (Starr and Hayman, 194). Dubbed ‘the Astor-Victoria billboard’ because it sat atop two movie theatres thus named, the huge advertising hoarding ran the full length of the city block along Broadway and wrapped partially around the sides down W.45th and 46th streets. It rose to a towering height of 60-feet (18.3m) and had an overall surface area of 15,000 square feet (1394m2), or a third of an acre (“New Super-Billboard,” 3).
The gargantuan billboard’s first ‘tenant’ was a hugely controversial advertising poster for Baby Doll, Warner Bros’ steamy 1956 film based on a Tennessee Williams’s one-act drama (Berger, 23). Designed for maximum visual impact, the poster for Baby Doll featured a towering image of the film’s young female star, Caroll Baker, sprawled across the horizontal length of the city-block hoarding –– “almost as big as the Statue of Liberty,” trumpeted the film’s pressbook (Palmer and Bray, 130). Semi-clad in a revealingly loose nightshirt, Baker was depicted lying in an over-sized cot sucking her thumb, gazing out from the billboard with sultry allure. In convincing the studio to finance this unprecedented promotional endeavour, the film’s producer-director, Elia Kazan argued the billboard would make Baby Doll “the talk not only of Broadway, but of the show world, of cafe society, of the literati, of the lowbrows, and of everybody else” (Palmer and Bray, 130). And he was right. The Baby Doll colossus of Times Square was an instant cause célèbre: suburban visitors gawped with wide-eyed disbelief, conservatives were scandalised, and the Catholic Archbishop of New York fulminated from the pulpit of St Patrick’s (Haberski, 61ff). Newspapers across the country carried stories––and pictures–– of the scandalous billboard, ensuring practically everybody in America knew of the film. It was a PR masterstroke that paid off handsomely.
The spectacular success of the Baby Doll campaign instantly marked the Astor-Victoria billboard as the premiere New York venue for blockbuster movie promotions. Over the ensuing two decades, the billboard would host a cavalcade of big screen luminaries including James Bond, The Vikings, Dracula, Krakatoa, Doctor Dolittle, and, even, The Bible. It was also used to promote the odd Broadway spectacular. Not surprisingly, rental of the site was at a premium with average leasing costs in the 1960s of over $30,000 per month (“Advertising”, 27). Because of the expense, the billboard typically saw rapid turnover. Most displays would feature for two or three months at most, before being painted over to make room for the next promotional colossus.
In mid-1968, the billboard hosted one of its most lengthy––and iconic––campaigns when Twentieth Century-Fox took out an extraordinary six month lease to advertise their big new Julie Andrews musical, Star! Like all of the advertising displays featured on the Astor-Victoria site, the Star! display had to be hand-painted because the billboard dimensions were simply too big for preprinted posters. Working from a studio-produced plan, the crew of 12 artists, sign hangers and outdoor painters spent over 1500 man-hours and 100 gallons of paint to produce the finished product. Work on the billboard started in mid-May and was finally completed in early-June (Messick).
The Star! billboard was a prominent feature of the mid-Manhattan landscape right through the celebrated ‘summer of ‘68’ till after the film’s New York premiere on October 22, before finally being painted over in late-December. Because the Star! billboard was in situ for so long, especially through the peak summer season, it pops up frequently in photographs, postcards, tourist snaps, newsreel footage and even the occasional oil painting. Indeed, at times it seems as if more people possibly took pictures of the Star! billboard in Times Square than saw the actual movie when it come out in October!
After Star!’s departure at the end of 1968, the iconic Astor-Victoria billboard suffered a slow but steady decline. In 1972, the Astor movie theatre closed its doors, lying fallow for many years, while the Victoria rebranded as a porn venue (Morrison, 158). As the 70s wore on, the billboard was still used for the occasional Hollywood blockbuster, but it was increasingly reduced to advertising B-grade exploitation pics and flash-in-the-pan rock groups. In 1982, the whole site and, with it, the billboard fell victim to the wreckers’ ball as part of the city’s master plan for the gentrification –– some might say the “Disneyfication” –– of Times Square (Shepherd, B1).
In a neat historical coincidence, the former Astor-Victoria site was eventually redeveloped as the Marriott Marquis, a hulking 50-storey hotel with a huge basement theatre that opened in 1985. The Marquis was the very theatre where Julie Andrews made her long-anticipated return to Broadway in 1995 in the musical stage version of Victor/Victoria (1995-97). It was a move that effectively saw Julie’s name back up in lights in more-or-less the exact spot where the Star! billboard had towered in 1968.
But there’s a further historical twist! In late-2014, the Broadway facade of the Marriott Marquis was redeveloped to accommodate a massive state-of-the-art LED advertising screen that was breathlessly claimed to be –– you guessed it –– “the world’s biggest billboard”. So half a century later, the western side of Times Square is once again home to a giant billboard the size of a football field.
Now, we can’t help but wonder if these historical synergies aren’t possibly trying to tell us something…like, oh I dunno, that this new state-of-the-art advertising screen in Times Square should host a special homage to mark the 50th Golden Anniversary of Star! Just imagine a digital recreation of the 1968 Star! billboard shimmering in 24 million-LED-pixel high definition glory across the night skies of midtown Manhattan! Anyone feel like starting a GoFundMe campaign? :-)
24 Years Later TICKS Continues to Latch Onto Horror Fans
Ants in Them (1954), bees in The Swarm (1978), and cockroaches in Mimic (1997), the insect subgenre of horror goes back decades and is showing no sign of slowing down. Long before movies like Stung (2015) could be found streaming on Netflix, there was another small horror flick that was a fan favorite amid the direct-to-video horror craze of the 1990s. This May, Ticks is celebrating its twenty-fourth anniversary. Like the one word title, the film’s official synopsis via Google is simple and to the point: “Teenage campers and their chaperones encounter a horde of bloodthirsty mutated ticks.” IMO, with that title and synopsis, how can you go wrong?
The Cast and Crew
Ticks stars Ami Dolenz, Seth Green, Rosalind Allen, Clint Howard, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air‘s Alfonso Ribeiro in his feature film debut. For the majority of movie goers, Seth Green is probably the most recognizable cast member, as he went on to appear in a string of major studio films during the 1990s (Can’t Hardly Wait, the Austin Powers franchise, and Idle Hands, to name a few) and landed the role of Oz on TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Despite the current name recognition of Seth Green, Ticks was released before he became a well known actor. In 1994, Ami Dolenz was the name that horror fans gravitated toward. Dolenz appeared in several horror films during the early part of the 90s and seemed to be on the brink of becoming a breakout star. In addition to Ticks, Dolenz starred in and Children of the Night (1991), Witchboard 2: The Devil’s Doorway (1993), and Pumpkinhead 2: Bloodwings (1994). Dolenz and Green’s Ticks co-star, Rosalind Allen, is also no stranger to genre fare. Prior to Ticks, Allen starred in Children of the Corn 2: The Final Sacrifice (1993) and To Die For 2 (1991). Clint Howard, brother of actor/producer/director Ron Howard, has had a long career of appearing in both lower budget fare as well as mega budget Hollywood productions. For example, The Ice Cream Man and Apollo 13 were both released in the same year, 1993.
It’s not just the actors where genre fans will find interest. Ticks has recognizable horror talent both in front of and behind the camera. The film was directed by Tony Randel of Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) fame, Amityville 1992 (1992), and Children of the Night (1991). The special effects for Ticks was led by Doug Beswick who had previously worked on such high profile titles as Ghostbusters (1984), A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), and Darkman (1990).
Marketing
Leading up to the May 25 VHS release date, Ticks had a lot going in its favor. In addition to the horror-friendly cast and crew and flashy VHS box art that featured a screaming close-up of Ami Dolenz being surrounded by the titular creatures, Ticks also appeared on the cover of Fangoria magazine. Here, the film took precedence over two Stephen King adaptations, Needful Things and Tommyknockers, both of which got side-panel placement in comparison to the gory full page image of Ticks.
While researching this article, I came across a cool marketing video for Ticks. The video was attached to screeners that were sent to movie rental stores prior to the release date as a way to convince store owners that they should purchase copies of the film for their shelves. The promo reel pushes the film’s special effects, star Ami Dolenz, and the “bug” factor as the major selling points. In addition to receiving a cool 5′ Ticks standee and shelf talkers, the video offers several other marketing ideas that would “keep your store infested with horror fans”, including setting up a blood drive that would give a free rental of Ticks to anyone donating a pint of blood that day.
youtube
Is It Any Good?
Ticks was released straight to video on May 25, 1994. Let’s keep in mind that the fact of movies (horror especially) skipping past any type of theatrical release wasn’t necessarily a bad thing; VHS horror was hot during the decade, and Ticks was aimed to give horror fans specifically what they wanted in the form of giant mutated insects wrecking havoc on a group of teen campers.
The Acting
For me, the standout performance of Ticks goes to Ami Dolenz. In the film, Dolenz stars as Dee Dee Davenport, one of the group of troubled teens who, along with their social workers, ventures into the woods. Based on her performance in Ticks, Dolenz proves to be a capable and likable horror actress. As mentioned earlier, she appeared in several other horror flicks around the same time as Ticks. These days, it seems that Dolenz is taking a break from acting. According to IMDB, her most recent credited film role was in 2010’s House Rules for Bad Girls. Personally, I would like to see Dolenz make a return to the screen. With all of the 90s nostalgia in full swing at the moment, I could easily imagine her playing the mother character to a new generation of teen horror stars.
The Cinematography and Effects
In addition to Dolenz’s recognizable on-screen presence, the promise of gooey and gorey special effects is what caught the attention of most horror fans and was reason enough for us to tune in. I mean, let’s face it, this kind of movie is obviously not for everybody. When you commit yourself to watching a movie about mutated, bloodthirsty ticks, what do you want to see? Well, I’m happy to report that the practical effects on display in Ticks will deliver. Just take a look at the trailer and the promo reel and you’ll get an idea of the fun ride that the movie promises.
Reception
For horror fans, Ticks was a video store staple through the 90s. Over the years, the film has gained a small following. With only 6 critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, Ticks currently has a “fresh” score of 67%. As far as purchasing goes, a copy of the film is hard to come by. On Amazon, the price of the DVD starts at a whopping $79.99 and goes up to double that amount (!) for a Blu-ray.
I like to think that Ticks has made a lasting impression on the insect subgenre of horror. Are you a fan? Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, and in the Horror Fiends of Nightmare on Film Street Facebook group!
How to Select a Great Movie to Watch
Some of the time you simply feel like a young ladies' or a guys' night in, thus comes the topic of how to choose an extraordinary film to watch. My companion Sam consistently disclosed to us that a gathering of three individuals ought to never go into a DVD rental store simultaneously, in light of the fact that you'll wind up being there for quite a long time and never truly settle on which motion pictures to recruit https://putlocker-online.com/golden-collection/hdmovie14 At the point when we're choosing motion pictures, we never go for the most recent discharges, since you pay a superior rate for films that are new to the DVD racks.
On the off chance that you generally select the motion pictures that have been around for some time, at that point prepare to have your mind blown. You have your own choice of "new" motion pictures to browse following a couple of months sincehat time the most recent discharges are downsized to ongoing discharges at a limited cost. In addition to the fact that you save yourself some cash, however you've additionally showed signs of improvement possibility of having the "pick of the pack" of the ongoing discharges.
Here's a rundown of things to assist you with concluding how to choose an incredible film to watch:
1. Choice by a topic
Regardless of whether it's a guys night or a chicks night, you can choose a topic. Some incredible romantic comedies incorporate the "Cap Movies" the class of Jane Austin's "Pride and Prejudice", "Emma, etc.
For the guys you may choose the "X-Men" arrangement, James Bond or such like.
2. Determination by Actor or Actress
Regularly we'll sit and watch a lot of Russell Crowe or Nicole Kidman motion pictures, you may have some most loved entertainers and on-screen characters that will help you in your selection of films to watch.
3. Choice by Genre
There's some incredible motion pictures to inspire youthful games players, for example, Basketball, Baseball, or Grid Iron motion pictures. You might be an enthusiast of blood and gore flicks, rom-coms, or activity spine chillers.
4. Genuine Stories
They state that there's nothing more bizarre than reality, and when Hollywood screen authors are taking a gander at new thoughts for film storylines, they frequently go to taking verifiable occasions and making some incredible motion pictures.
Inside the classification of genuine stories you despite everything have a great determination of motion pictures to watch about wearing saints, national legends, and even common people that have done some unprecedented things.
5. Determination by appraisals
While choosing an extraordinary film to watch, you have to think about the crowd, as this can help with your dynamic. On the off chance that you are picking films for a lot of little youngsters, at that point it's commonly a smart thought to have viewed those motion pictures yourself first, so you don't have any astonishments that could stun or terrify the kids.
6. Picking a Foreign Language Movie
While there's an entire stack of incredible English Language motion pictures, there's additionally some phenomenal unknown dialect motion pictures that merit your consideration.
Try not to be hesitant to consider outside movies since they have captions. After the initial couple of moments of viewing an outside film and perusing the captions you before long get brought into the film and "it slips nearly's mind" that you are not tuning in to English.
7. Informal exchange
We've never truly discovered that individual referrals of film titles from our companions have been of much advantage. Everyone has various tastes, and in light of the fact that one individual doesn't care for a specific film doesn't really imply that you won't appreciate it.
This is regularly evident with media film pundits. We've every single heard tale about motion pictures that have been hammered by the pundits just to become film industry victories.
There's a lot of different approaches to conclude how to choose an incredible film to watch that incorporate watching the sneak peaks or film trailers, just as watching film survey appears on TV and the web.
Interview: Larry Cohen (King Cohen)
Larry Cohen is known for writing and directing cult titles like The Stuff, It’s Alive, and Q, in addition to penning the screenplays for such films as Phone Booth, Captivity, and Cellular. Now he’s the subject of a documentary titled King Cohen. The prolific filmmaker discusses the honor with me, in addition to dropping exclusive details about the upcoming anthology series he’s developing with J.J. Abrams.
What was your reaction when you found out that Steven Mitchell wanted to make a documentary about you?
I was delighted that somebody would be interested in my career. I didn't know these people. I didn't participate really in the making of it. I didn't supervise the production or have input into the production; I just did the interviews and allowed them to follow me in certain places and film. I gave them addresses and names of people, contacts that they might use, but I didn't try to take over the picture. You know, I'm a control freak on my movies. I write, produce, and direct everything. So if I started getting involved I would have ended up taking over the whole production, which I didn't want to do. I left it up to them.
And how did you react after seeing the final product, King Cohen?
I just saw it up in Canada [at Fantasia]. It was almost two hours long, so I'm still trying to react to it now. It's odd seeing a movie about yourself.
Speaking of Fantasia, I understand you were given a Lifetime Achievement Award. What was that experience like?
They gave me a Lifetime Achievement Award and ran four or five of my movies. That was a nice event up there. Who am I to turn down a Lifetime Achievement Award?
Michael Moriarty was there to honor you. Can you tell us a little bit about your relationship with him after casting him in so many movies?
It was wonderful seeing him again. He was just fabulous. We had so much fun up on stage, our repartee, kidding each other. It was nice. His mind is so sharp; it was all there. He's had some physical problems over the years, but his mind is sharp as ever. I think he was as delighted to see me as I was to see him.
What do you think makes you a good subject for a documentary?
Oh, I don't know. I have a unique career as an independent filmmaker. I made 20 movies and had control of every aspect, from the casting to the script to the editing. There's a lot of other filmmakers around, but very few who write and direct and do everything on their movies. Woody Allen is one of them.
Looking back at your body of work, what stands out as your favorite project or the one you're most proud of?
Well, I like a lot of them. It's like asking, "What's your favorite child?" I like a lot of them. I particularly like The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover. It was so atypical of my work and such an interesting picture in terms of the research I did and the newsworthy aspect of it. Although people did not pay attention to the newsworthy part of it back in those days, in 1974, because nobody would give any accreditation to a movie maker as far as breaking any news. It was a very newsworthy picture, and they paid no attention to it, but if you look at it now in retrospect you realize how far ahead of its time it was and how much information there was there that hadn't been revealed before. That was an exorcise in dealing with a real subject, a real figure, the real FBI. And today, with all this fuss about meetings between FBI directors and presidents, it's interesting to see that period in American history when Mr. Hoover and the presidents met all the time privately and had a lot of secrets between them.
I think being ahead of its time is something that can be said of many of your films, in addition to containing social commentary. Do your scripts usually begin with the social statement that a plot is then built around, or vice versa?
I don't really know the answer to that. The ideas come to me all at once, then I sit down and start to write them, and usually I have no idea where it's going when I start. I don't have an outline or a fixed focus on how it's going to end or where it's going to take me. I just write it, and it comes to life. A lot of it comes from the subconscious, I'm sure. I think most great writing comes from the subconscious, and you're just like a stenographer putting it down on paper. There was social comment on everything I did, even on television when I was writing episodic television and creating series. There was an underlying social message to each thing, but it was always cloaked in entertainment values rather than it being a right-on-the-nose political statement.
As someone with longevity, how were you able to overcome all the challenges you faced as a low budget filmmaker?
I always felt that I wasn't going to continue in the industry every time I made a movie. I thought, "Oh, well. Is this going to be the last one, or am I going to get to do another one?" You're always afraid that your luck will run out. I did 20 pictures, and that was quite a good number, and I sold at least 20 to 25 other scripts to other producers and companies that got made. That doesn't count the ones that I sold that didn't get made, that I got paid for but they didn't produce the pictures. There's many Larry Cohen scripts in the archive at Paramount and 20th Century Fox and MGM. They're all there, but nobody's going to go down in the basement and go through those filing cabinets. Nobody's interested in what was done by a previous administration, so those are kind of lost projects. But there must another 10 or 15 of those around. My gosh, I've written a lot of screenplays.
Do you have any advice for aspiring filmmakers who want to do things independently the way you did?
Well, people are doing it today. It's somewhat easier in terms of shooting things because of the change to digital filming. You don't need big cameras, and you don't need a lot of lights, and you don't have to edit on film. You still have to have the good script and you have to have good performances, but the actual overhead is less. However, there's very few places to get your picture played anymore. Very few low budget pictures get any kind of distribution at all, and usually that's just a horror movie. Some of my movies would qualify as horror movies, but I never thought of them that way. I thought of them as Larry Cohen movies. That's what they were!
It's been several years since your last produced screenplay and even longer since your last directing credit. With the documentary reintroducing your career to a lot of people, do you think we'll see another Larry Cohen movie?
We're working on a series now for cable with J.J. Abrams, who is a big fan of mine, and his company, Bad Robot. Each season would be 10 original one-hour Larry Cohen thrillers. We've got about two seasons already written, ready to be shot. If that happens, it'll be a whole new renaissance, and there will be a lot of my material out in the world, and I'll direct some of them.
That's excellent news! So it would be anthology style?
That's what it's going to be, a thriller anthology. I'm hoping to get somebody like Christopher Walken to be the host and introduce them in a comedic way.
A lot of your material seems ripe for a remake. It's Alive has already been remade, and Maniac Cop is in the works. Have you been approached about remakes of any of your other films?
Every once in a while somebody calls up and asks me about the rights to something. I always tell them what it would cost, and then usually I don't hear from them again. But it's okay. I don't care if they remake any of my pictures. I like them how they were. Most of the remakes that have been done of classic thrillers or classic horror films or classic science fiction, the original is better. The new version has better special effects and great CGI and a bigger budget, but in general the original pictures were better.
I know you're not involved on the production side of it, but do you have any insight about when everyone can see King Cohen?
We'll, we're going to show it in Austin, Texas at a big jamboree down there, and it's scheduled to show in London and in Sitges, Spain. After that, there will be a premiere [in Los Angeles] at the Egyptian Theater, and then screening perhaps in New York. After that, it'll get distribution, whether it's on cable or we get some theatrical run. But I'm not out there trying to sell my own life story.
This might be a poor question on that note, but for someone who may not be familiar with your work, why should they check out King Cohen?
If you want to see my movies, you can go on the internet! There's like 14 movies of mine that are available for rental. They're about $1.99 each, and they're well worth it. If you want to see a good Larry Cohen movie, you can see any one of them or all of them. The internet provides some longevity for these pictures. You don't have to wait for them to play in a revival theater anymore. You don't have to wait for them to come to the video store. They're all there, and you can just push a button and they're in your home instantly. And you don't have to return to them!
And no more late fees!
No more late fees. Well, it is an entertaining picture. It's longer than thought - it's almost 2 hours long - but you never get bored. There's all kind of surprises. Even I was surprised!
Thrill your Good friends with your brand-new House Cinema System
youtube
So you remain in the marketplace for a brand-new home theater system? Why not? Everybody you understand either has one or wants one. Are you tired of having to go to your friend's place to watch the game on the big screen? Have you been playing that SNES system, circa 1995, considering that, well, 1995? Is your treasured flick collection in laserdisc layout? Possibly it is time to purchase a new residence cinema.The first thing you should do is develop a spending plan. You can invest hundreds of bucks on your brand-new system, so give some consideration to what you have the ability to spend. There's no factor spending your rental fee loan on a TV, if you will certainly not have a home to see it in.As soon as you have actually chosen exactly what you have the ability to invest, draft a want list of components you would like. Big screen TV or LCD projector? X-Box or Playstation? Exactly what concerning surround noise? 5:1? 6:1? 7:1? There are many options, as well as the opportunities are apparently countless. Keep it straightforward. Do you truly require a 51 inch HDTV, for your 10x10 living area?In any case, your system will absolutely require certain components to qualify as a house theater. For the sake of being small, why not consider getting started with a home-theater-in-a-box? These packages normally include a surround sound receiver, a set of speakers, as well as a DVD/CD gamer. These systems are fairly cost-effective, as well as will leave you with adequate cash flow to buy that new Sopranos box set! Capice?A lot of individuals want to consist of pc gaming systems in their home theater, particularly if they are able to play on a big screen. There's nothing like playing Halo in life dimension! If you do the majority of your pc gaming on your computer system, the majority of decent video cards will have a video clip line out that you can make use of to link to your TV or projector. Otherwise, you can include any other console system into your residence movie theater.Your sound system will likely contain a variety of speakers (left, right, and also facility front, border left and right, and a subwoofer). This is the conventional border system. The power level of the amplifier you are utilizing will considerably impact the noise being generated, so make sure to make use of one with adequate power to efficiently supply your system. Austin TX real estate As I said, the alternatives are relatively endless for home cinema systems. Be sure to purchase from a reliable supplier, as well as do not buy anything that does not have a 30-day cash back guarantee... just in situation you have to return it to pay your rent!
While You Were Sleeping, Sandra Bullock Was Building Her Real Estate Empire
Vera Anderson/WireImage; realtor.com
Actress Sandra Bullock’s approachable, big-screen appeal has made her one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood, with a reported net worth of $200 million. In turn, the “Ocean’s 8” star has plowed some of her hard-earned cash into real estate. This, of course, piqued our interest.
The Oscar winner recently made housing headlines with the $2.93 million sale of an investment property in Los Angeles. Bullock had rented out the charming home in Hollywood Hills West for years, for $15,000 to $18,000 a month, Variety reported. She had purchased the home through a trust for $1.49 million in 2001.
The 3,000-square-foot, three-bedroom rental offered an eat-in kitchen, skylights, and a pool. Located just behind the famed Chateau Marmont Hotel, it’s down the street from actress Cameron Diaz.
Rental property in L.A.
In addition to this property, Bullock has bought and sold buildings for decades, and even owns some commercial assets.
So we decided to crash headlong into the holdings of the 54-year-old A-lister.
Hope floats in Austin?
Bullock starred in the 1998 rom-com “Hope Floats,” which was partly filmed in Austin, TX.
She wound up putting down roots here, even opening an office of her L.A.-based production company. She reportedly owns several homes in the area.
In 2004 she won a lawsuit against a contractor who built her an “unlivable” lakefront home in the late 1990s. She never moved into the place and told Good Housekeeping in 2000 that she oversaw much of the construction of her dream home that turned into a nightmare.
“It’s addictive to me. I love to do a lot of hands-on stuff,” she said. “But now I know all about construction, so no one can rip me off.”
In 2012, Bullock listed a different Austin home for $2.5 million. The 5,300-square-foot property featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, a wine cellar, pool, hot tub, and downtown views was eventually sold for $2 million in March 2013.
At the time, she was reportedly commuting between Austin and Los Angeles, renovating a mansion in L.A. (more on that later), and hoping to permanently relocate to SoCal to focus on her life with her newly adopted son, Louis.
Speeding through SoCal
On the heels of her 2010 divorce from motorcycle builder Jesse James, Bullock turned to retail therapy, purchasing a “legendary” estate in Beverly Hills, CA, for $16.2 million, Variety reported.
The home had previously been owned by Marlo Thomas, David Geffen, and Hard Rock Café co-founder Peter Morton. Bullock embarked on a renovation to make the home her permanent digs.
The 4.1-acre property includes an 8,110-square-foot Tudor with eight bathrooms and seven bedrooms, including a master suite with fireplace, sitting room, and dual baths. There’s also a paneled dining room, home gym, and “serious” security system, Variety noted. (Perhaps it wasn’t serious enough: Bullock had a terrifying encounter with a stalker on her property in 2014.)
Bullock also picked up two units in the celebrity-filled Sierra Towers in West Hollywood. She purchased the first one in 2014 for $3.35 million. Previously owned by actor Matthew Perry, the furnished high-floor condo was offered earlier this year for $22,000 a month.
Bullock picked up the second, larger unit on a lower floor in an off-market deal for $5.13 million, according to Variety.
While they were married, Bullock and James in an oceanfront estate in Sunset Beach, CA. After their divorce, James sold the property for $4.5 million. The remodeled Mediterranean came back on the market for $5.4 million in May, but has since been reduced to $5 million.
Crashing in Soho
Of course, you can’t be a movie star without having addresses on both coasts. In the early 2000s Bullock reportedly purchased a small townhouse in downtown Manhattan for the not-very-small price of $3.35 million.
Built in 1899, the 3,000-square-foot, single-family home, according to the website Sohostrut, is estimated to be “probably worth around $12 million today.” Another savvy buy by Bullock!
Georgia getaway
Island escapes are ideal for high-profile celebrities who want to vacation outside the Hollywood spotlight. In 2001, Bullock snagged a 3,400-square-foot, plantation-style home on Georgia’s Tybee Island for $1.5 million. (She later won an Oscar for her role in 2009’s “The Blind Side,” which was filmed entirely in the Peach State.)
Due to a hectic schedule, she isn’t able to spend much time at her Georgia getaway, which is probably why it’s been available for rent. Going for $1,400 a night with a four-night minimum, the spacious home sleeps 12, with four bedrooms, two baths, and a pull-out couch.
The layout also includes a double-height living room, dining room, game area, workout room, screened porch with water views, and pool.
Tybee Vacation Rentals
Bullock also loves the Big Easy
In 2007, the actress starred in the mystery “Premonition,” which was filmed in Louisiana, with a good chunk of the movie shot on a soundstage in New Orleans.
Through a trust, Bullock acquired a glorious Victorian in the Garden District in 2009 for $2.25 million. Known as the “Swiss chalet house” and built in 1876 by William Freret, the elegant residence features 6,174 square feet with ornate details, columns, and moldings.
The vintage charmer is located near homes owned by John Goodman and Nicolas Cage, as well as a residence once owned by author Anne Rice. Bullock also has ties to the area: Her two adopted children come from Louisiana.
Jackson Hole
Bullock has also adopted the A-lister habit of heading to Jackson Hole, which is known for its winter sports and relaxing atmosphere. She picked up 5 acres, which come with a ski house and “equestrian center,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The cozy three-bedroom log cabin is surrounded by firs and aspens. Details are scant, but we know the star spends time there, as she made headlines for heading to the snowy locale for her 50th birthday.
Come Back, Be Here - Chapter 6
“Lauren right?” The brunette asks and Lauren nods. “Sorry I’m pretty bad with remembering names. Well remembering anything these days.” She chuckles and Lauren feels her chest tighten at the sound, one of her favorite sounds, that she has been deprived of hearing for over a year.
“Y-yeah it’s Laur-”
“Chancho, I’m coming!” A voice interrupts Lauren. “Let’s go get pizza I’m starv…ing.” Dinah pauses when she sees the green-eyed girl. “Well well green eyes couldn’t stay away.” She smirks as Lauren’s face turns a dark shade of red.
“Yeah well I was apartment hunting and I ran into Camz.” Lauren gestures toward her wife.
“Well I guess the hunt is over huh?” Dinah gives her a quick thumbs up when Camila isn’t looking and the green-eyed girl chuckles.
“Yeah. I think I’ve found a good one.” The green-eyed girl glances at the younger brunette in front of her and watches as a blush rises to her olive cheeks. Lauren internally dances for still being able to have that effect on her.
“Mmhmm. Well we are going to get pizza. Wanna join? Mani is meeting us there.” Dinah speaks up, effectively breaking the staring contest that’s going on between the two former lovers.
“Sure. I could go for some pizza.” Lauren pipes up. A little too enthusiastically probably. Dinah smirks and shakes her head at the enthusiastic reply.
“I’ll drive.” The older brunette offers as she pulls out her keys and leads the girls to her rental car. Lauren clicks the unlock button from a distance and Camila sets her sights on the car.
“Hey I used to have a car just like this in high school.” Camila scurries to the black car ahead of the other two girls. “I loved that car.” She comments as she runs her fingers over the hood of Lauren’s rental car.
“I know.” Lauren whispers as she smiles fondly. She hoped to get this reaction from Camila when the brunette saw the car for the first time. Lauren knew it was her first car and she got it when she was 16 so the brown-eyed girl would still have a memory of the car.
“That’s so fucking cute.” Dinah whispers as she stands by the green-eyed girl and watches Camila inspect the car. “You rent out a car like the one she had in high school and yet Dorito can’t even pronounce her name right. My Camren heart.” Dinah dramatically places her hand over her chest.
“So you’re the one that came up with our ship name?” Lauren turns to her after hearing the familiar name.
“Duh.” Dinah tosses her hair back. “I might not have met you, but Mila always told me about you over FaceTime and I shipped you guys.”
“Good to know you still do.” Lauren laughs as she makes her way over to where Camila is standing. She goes to the passenger’s side door and opens it for the girl. Lauren watches as another blush spreads across Camila’s cheeks.
“Thank you, Lauren.” Camila offers her a warm smile before sliding into the car.
“You’re welcome, baby.” She mumbles after the door closes.
As soon as the older brunette enters the car, she plugs her phone in and turns on The 1975. She patiently waits for a reaction from the girl to the right of her. Sure enough, as soon as “Girls” starts playing, the brown-eyed girl freaks out.
“I love them!” Camila exclaims before singing the first verse loudly. Butterflies erupt in Lauren’s stomach as she listens to her wife sing .
“I know.” Lauren smiles over at her and starts to reach for the younger brunette’s hand, but stops herself and brings the wandering hand up to the wedding band hanging from her neck. It’s a piece of Camila and if she can’t hold the girl to the right of her, she’d hold onto the band that symbolizes the promise the two of them made to each other a year ago. Lauren’s fingers absentmindedly trace the smooth part of the band, just as she used to do when she held Camila’s hand in hers. She glances in the rear view mirror momentarily and sees a smirk plastered across the Polynesian’s face. Lauren sees Dinah mouth “Camren” and she just shakes her head and continues to listen to her favorite girl sing her favorite songs, with the occasional interruption from Dinah to give directions.
“That’s it on the left.” Dinah leans up and points so Lauren can see the building she’s talking about. The green-eyed girl pulls into the parking lot of the establishment called “Brooke’s Pizza” and all three girls shuffle out of the Charger. Lauren once again has to stop herself from grabbing the teacher’s hand as they are walking. She does, however, open the door for Camila and let her walk in ahead of her.
“Thank you.” Camila offers her a shy smile.
“Anytime.” Lauren sends her a quick wink and then shakes her head as Dinah walks through the open door with a smirk still present on her face.
“Dinah! Over here!: Normani yells from across the restaurant. Lauren watches as the Polynesian makes her way over to the booth in the back with Camila trailing behind.
"Hi baby. How was your day?” Dinah slides in next to her fiancé and gives her a quick peck on the lips. Lauren’s eyes go wide in shock as she slides into the booth next to Camila. She didn’t see that one coming. She knew the dark-skinned girl said she was engaged, but she didn’t know it was to the sassy Polynesian across from her.
“You two are cute.” Lauren smiles and points between the two of them.
“Duh.” Dinah scoffs and wraps an arm around Normani’s shoulders. Lauren rolls her eyes and Camila chuckles.
“Oh baby I forgot to tell you that Lauren thought I was hitting on her at the bar the other day.” Normani snorts as she informs the Polynesian of what happened at the bar the other night.
“Psh you aren’t her type Lo.” Dinah remarks. “She’s only into hella cute Polynesians, isn’t that right Mani?”
“That’s right.” The dark-skinned girl grabs Dinah’s chin and pulls her in for a kiss.
Lauren, not wanting to stare at the kissing couple, turns to Camila. “How did they meet?"
"They were friends for like 2 years and then decided they wanted to be more.” She answers while also trying to avoid the couple sucking face across from her. “They were never just friends though. All the longing stares on movie nights and at sleepovers were a dead give away. I always knew it was more.” Camila smiles in approval at the two girls before her.
“When you know you know.” Lauren whispers as she admires her wife’s flawless side profile. Camila having heard the whisper, turns to her right to make eye contact with the green eyes that are already staring at her intensely. She feels a tingling sensation in her stomach, but dismisses it as just hunger. Camila breaks their staring when she feels her phone vibrate. She turns it over in her hands and cringes when she sees the name on the screen.
Lauren notices Camila’s change in demeanor and steals a glance at her phone screen.
Austin.
The green-eyed girl rolls her eyes as Camila looks at her pleadingly. Lauren gets the hint and shuffles out of the booth so Camila can do the same.
“I’m just going to uh call him back.” Camila points to her phone and then outside. Lauren watches Dinah roll her eyes as well. “Order me a Coke please Cheechee.” The teacher says before turning on her heels and walking out of the restaurant. Lauren’s eyes follow her as she steps out of the pizza place. Lauren turns around occasionally to keep an eye on her and sees the young brunette pacing the parking lot. She knows the conversation is not friendly because every couple of seconds Camila runs a hand through her dark locks. Lauren knows she only does that when she’s stressed, worried, or frustrated.
“Does this happen a lot?” Lauren turns back around to address the couple in front of her. “Is he always this.. controlling?”
“What you’ve seen is nothing. What we’ve seen is nothing compared to what I know goes on behind closed doors.” Dinah sighs and runs her fingers through her curls.
Lauren sits up straighter and glances at the pacing girl outside the restaurant to make sure she is still there. “What do you mean by that?”
Dinah starts to open her mouth, but is interrupted by a shorter girl who appears at the table.
“You guys didn’t tell me you were coming!” Ally screeches as she takes in the three girls before her.
“Allyson!” Dinah pipes up and quickly slides out of the booth to get to the younger girl.
“Damn babe you don’t even greet me with that much enthusiasm.” Normani chuckles at her fiancés dramatic welcoming.
“Oh shush. I haven’t seen my short stacks in a couple of weeks.” Dinah throws her arms around the shorter girl. “You work too much Ally.” The Polynesian pouts.
“Well owning a restaurant is a lot of work.” Ally sighs and releases her grip on Dinah. “Where’s Mila?”
Dinah points outside and Ally observes the younger girl who is pacing the parking lot still. “Austin?” She asks knowingly.
“Always.” Normani rolls her eyes.
Lauren, having felt a little awkward just sitting there, clears her throat. “I’m Lauren.” She extends her hand to the shorter girl in front of her. Ally finally sets her gaze on Lauren and takes the girl’s awaiting hand.
“Oh hi! Nice to meet you Lauren. I’m Ally.” She releases the pale hand after a couple of shakes. “Friend of Mila’s?”
Dinah almost chokes on her own spit. “More like wife.”
“Wife?” Ally’s eyes grow excessively wide. “I knew Camila liked girls, but I never thought she’d have one of each.
This time it’s Lauren’s turn to choke on air.
"They were married before Mila’s head injury.” Dinah explains the situation to the restaurant owner. “I still don’t know all the details, but green-eyes will tell us all at the right time I’m sure.”
“Oh…” Ally’s mouth forms an O shape. “That’s hard. I’m sorry.” She offers Lauren a sympathetic smile.
“Thank you, Ally.” Lauren offers a smile in return.
“So Lo, how you planning on getting Mila back?” Normani chimes in and Lauren just sits there stunned. She opens her mouth, but then closes it back again. Luckily a voice chimes in.
“Who’s getting who back?” Camila asks as she gives Ally a quick side hug and slides back into the booth next to the dark-haired girl. Lauren just shrugs and scoots over to make room for the girl.
“Ally wants Troy back!” Dinah pipes up in panic and Ally shoots daggers at her.
“You can do better.” Camila offers her two cents to the shorter brunette.
“So can you.” Dinah mutters only loud enough for Normani to hear.
“So what can I get you guys?” Ally tries to diminish the awkwardness. “I don’t usually waitress, but I’ll get you losers and Lauren a drink.” She pulls out a pen and writes all the orders on her hand. “It’ll be out soon.” She announces after sliding the pen back into her pocket.
Camila notices that she’s still standing there smiling at all of them like the ray of sunshine that she is. Her stomach rumbles again and everyone at the table looks at her. “Well get to it, Allyson. The food won’t cook itself and I’m hungry.” Camila rubs her empty stomach and looks pleadingly at the shorter girl. The other four girls at the table laugh and shake their heads.
That’s my girl. Lauren thinks as she smiles fondly at the smaller girl beside her.
The Best 27 Websites Like Craigslist to Buy and Sell
Did you know there are so many other sites like Craigslist to buy and sell your stuff?
Of course Craigslist is the most well-known and for good reason. First, the site features hundreds of thousands of items for sale in pretty much any category you can imagine.
Second, (and probably my most favorite reason) it’s so popular because it’s free. F.R.E.E. Free to list, free to sell, free to buy. If you’ve ever had other types of sites eat up your profits via listing and selling fees, you know what I’m talking about.
However, with the ever-expanding world of e-commerce, there are now dozens of other (better) sites like Craigslist to choose from to list the stuff you want to sell, or to buy the things you want or need. Here are the top 27 of the most popular alternatives to Craigslist you might find helpful for buying or selling things or services.
How to Safely Buy and Sell These Sites
Summary
The Top 10 Sites Like Craigslist
These sites are listed in order of my favorite sites to buy and sell online that are very similar Craigslist. Right now Offer Up is my favorite, but the Facebook Marketplace is also a very quick and easy way to sell your items as well. When I am looking for services, I lean on Offer Up and when I am looking to sell something quickly, I will head on over to the Facebook Marketplace.
1. Offer Up
Offer Up is a selling site where you list your items or services by type, and you search by type, city or zip code. There’s an added filter letting you choose how far away you can search from that city or zip code.
Categories
Antiques
Appliances
Arts and crafts
Auto parts
Baby and kids
Beauty and health
Bicycles
Boats and marine
Books and magazines
Services
Okay, the list is seriously too long to post here. Offer Up has a lot of categories and a ton of stuff or services for sale from appliances and auto parts to used textbooks and antiques. You can also ask the seller a question or even make an offer. No listing fees or selling fees. Offer Up is my favorite for security as well. They take your safety seriously and will advise you to as well.
2. Facebook Marketplace
If you have a Facebook account, then you already have access to the Facebook Marketplace. Facebook does a really great job with their marketplace and makes it extremely simple to buy or sell. All communication is done via Facebook Messenger and can be done from mobile or desktop. With the amount of people shopping on Facebook, you can usually sell your stuff the fastest on this platform.
3. Facebook Groups
Selling on Facebook started inside Facebook groups long before the Facebook Marketplace. Once you request and are approved for a local Facebook group (often called “YOUR CITY Swip Swap), you can begin selling your items and finding other things to buy in your local area.
It can be a bit tedious to find the right sale group for your items on Facebook which is why I like the Marketplace better. However, I do like the fact that if there are any complaints about someone inside the group – they are usually kicked out of the group. This causes buyers and sellers to be extra nice (and fair) with each other to remain in the group.
4. Letgo
Letgo shares items for sale by using your location. The site is easy to use, and there are no listing and selling fees. The site is pretty basic but it works. It’s easiest to search by item.
5. Oodle
Probably the most comparable to Craigslist is Oodle, but it also does something Craiglist does not do – Oodle aggregates listings both locally and nationally from sites like eBay, ForRent.com, BoatTrader.com, Cars.com, and many more. Oodle uses these networks of online marketplaces to buy, sell, and trade products and services.
Categories
Merchandise
Motor-operated vehicles (cars, boats, motorcycles, RVs, etc.)
Rentals
Real estate
Jobs
Pets
Tickets
Services
Personal ads
Community-related ads (announcements, groups, etc.)
Currently Oodle has over 15 million monthly users and is available in the United States, Australia, Canada, India, UK, Ireland, and New Zealand. There are no fees for listing or selling, however there are limits to how many listings you can post at a time based on your selling categories.
6. Locanto
When you think of Locanto, think of the word “local”.
Instead of offering up ads from around the country, Locanto is best for those who are looking for something locally such as a used car, a babysitter, a job, or anything particular to the vicinity of where you live.
It’s very simple to post an ad on Locanto and the ads are meant to feel and look like ads you see in the local newspaper (what are newspapers again?). My favorite part of Locanto is your ad will remain live for 60 days which exposes your ad to a very large audience.
Bonus: You can upload pictures into your ad and you can use HTML codes to send a link to your website if you choose to do so.
7. Trovit
Trovit is a site where you can list your homes and cars for sale, or list available job positions you may need to fill. How Trovit works is it lists ads for over 50 countries including the United States, Mexico, the UK, United Arab Emirates, Australia, Mexico, and many, many more.
The site is pretty well organized. When you search for a vehicle you start with the country you want to buy in. From there it brings you to another screen where you can choose a make, model, etc. You can choose cars by area or by make and model.
Searches for real estate work similarly. You start by choosing your area, and from there you can narrow down the search based on the type of house/number of bedrooms, etc. you want.
The site has an expansive amount of listings on it. Most all of the listings seemed to be taken from/linked to other sources. FYI, you can only advertise items for sale on Trovit if you own a coordinating website.
However, if you’re advertising on Craigslist or similar sites you can be pretty sure your ad will show up on Trovit anyway.
8. Gumtree
Gumtree is just like Craigslist and is wildly popular in the UK and is also frequently used in Australia, South Africa, and recently Gumtree has began to increase in popularity within the United States
No matter where you live, Gumtree is still a great alternative to Craigslist because of the ability to buy and sell to anyone in the world.
Gumtree can also be used as an app and can be found in both the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store.
9. US Free Ads
USFreeAds have been around since 1999 and I don’t think they’ve ever done an update on the look of their site. It’s about as plain and simple as you can get which isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes keeping it as simple as possible works the best.
After doing some digging, there are two separate sites for US Free Ads – USFreeAds and USNetAds.
10. AdLandPro
AdLandPro allows you to post up to 20 ads for free and the ads will stay on their site for 4 weeks. However, if you update your ad inside those 4 weeks, you can keep your ads up indefinitely.
Once you post your ad, it is then sent to their database which is linked to over 57,000 affiliates websites.
The Rest of the Best Sites like Craigslist
Some of these are older sites that many have forgot about or they may be brand new and just getting started. Often I will find the best deals on these sites listed below because they may not have as much competition from other buyers and sellers.
11. Geebo
What makes Geebo (pronounced G-bo) unique is the personal touch in the digital age. Every single ad is actually manually approved by a human being instead of a robot or algorithm.
Geebo is only offered in the United States and is currently in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami, Chicago, Dallas, Austin, Phoenix, Washington, DC, and Seattle. To date, Geebo has spread to over 160 communities nationwide.
12. USA Today
Not much to explain here. USA Today is a giant in the print and digital media niche and reported over 102 million unique visitors and 1.2 billion pageviews per month in 2017.
One thing is for sure – your ad will be seen by a lot of people!
13. Ads Globe
Ads Globe is a nice looking site, it’s free, and you can choose ads from a drop down list of multiple countries.
However, after looking through their site for United States based ads, very few ads were found. If you’re going to try out Ads Globe, be sure to set your location at the very top left of their site.
14. PennySaver USA
I am sure the founder of Craigslist (Craig Newmark) had a PennySaver print ad in his hand well before he ever thought of starting Craigslist.
Penny Saver has been around for more than 50 years and survived the shift from print media to digital media in the online world. If you live in California, you can still find the Penny Saver in print, but everywhere else is online as PennySaver USA.
Also, PennySaver USA is visited more than 1 million unique visitors per month.
15. City News
City News offers free classified ads to help you sell or buy all over the world. You can post in City News if you live in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and more. There’s also an option for upgraded ads, but there are charges to upgrade.
Categories
You can choose from a variety of categories to sell or shop in, including:
Antiques and collectibles
Astrology, holistic and religion
Auto and motor vehicles
Boats and water sports
Business opportunities
Real estate
People connections
And more. I even found ads for medical treatment services, such as knee surgery in foreign countries, which was….interesting.
16. 10 Day Ads
10 Day Ads has an interesting concept going for them. It’s free to list and sell stuff online, however the ads only stay on the site for – you guessed it – 10 days.
The goal, according to the site, is to keep the ads new and fresh so people aren’t seeing the same listings over and over again like can happen when people post on Craigslist.
Not only does this concept help buyers to avoid seeing old ads, it helps them minimize the chances of seeing an ad for an item that is already sold.
Categories
Antiques and collectibles
Employment
Music/records/CDs
Appliances
Everything else/miscellaneous
Personals/video profiles
Art
Fashion
Pets
Automotive
Baby items
Home and garden
And several other categories. The site is pretty well organized and easy to use. The site offered ads from all over the world, however when I checked the listings a lot of the categories had “zero” items for sale.
17. Ad Toad
Ad Toad isn’t as aesthetically pleasing as most of the other sites featured here, but it does have some stuff listed for sale and you can list and sell for free.
Categories
Some of the categories they have include:
Services
Vehicles, boats and aviation
Shopping
Rental and roommates
Personal
Hobby
Houseware
Home electronics
And others. Many of the categories had zero listings, however. I’m not sure this site is real well-known yet, but it is a free place to list your stuff for sale.
18. FreeAdsTime
FreeAdsTime looks and runs a lot like Craigslist. You start by choosing your state, and then the city you want to browse in, from the home page.
Categories
From there you can choose from several different categories such as:
Jobs
Services
Vehicles
Pets
Real estate/rentals
Community
Musician
Items
“Items” refers to things for sale and under this banner you’ll find links to items such as clothing, collectibles, computers, kids’ stuff, heavy equipment, jewelry, furniture and more.
You don’t have to create an account to post here, however, doing so will give you added benefits, such as being able to track the number of views on the items you’ve posted. It’s free to create an account too.
As I searched the site, I found there were several ads to browse for some items, and zero ads to browse for others. The site was attractive and easy to use.
19. Recycler
Recycler is another site where you place your ads directly. The site is easy to use and has categories such as cars and vehicles, pets, real estate for sale, rentals, sports and recreation, community, jobs and more.
It seemed to me that the majority of the stuff listed for sale here consisted of vehicles. Some categories, such as pets, had no listings when I was doing my research, however in the vehicles category there were thousands of ads to browse through.
You have to create an account with Recycler in order to post an ad, however it’s free to do so. This is a site I’d use to advertise a vehicle I had for sale, but it doesn’t look like it gets a whole lot of traffic for other items.
20. Pawngo
Pawngo is a site where you can sell your stuff to a pawn company. Their primary goal is to lend people money using their valuables as security, however it looks like they will buy items within certain parameters.
Items they accept for pawn include: jewelry, precious metals, camera equipment, musical instruments, Apple computers, luxury cars, and designer handbags. You can also buy these items directly from Pawngo.
21. Classified Ads
The Classified Ads website seems to be a pretty popular place to list items for sale.
Categories
Some of the categories they run ads for include:
Vehicles
Real estate
Rentals
Pets
Personals
Jobs
Items for sale
And others. You can place ads directly on the site, but I also noticed they had ads that seemed to be pulled from other sites. The site is simple, but organized and easy to use.
22. Classifieds Giant
Classifieds Giant is a well-organized site that allows you to post ads for a variety of items. Their “for sale” category includes antiques, arts and crafts, baby and kids, appliances, household items, electronic items, sporting equipment and more.
Like most other sites they also have ads for cars and trucks, real estate, jobs, services, community, personal ads, etc. You do have to create an account to post on Classifieds Giant, but it’s free to do so.
23. OLX
OLX offers items for sale that include all of the usual stuff: vehicles, real estate, electronics, used furniture, clothing, etc. They have sites for a couple of dozen countries, including Pakistan, Guatemala, India, South Africa and more.
However, when you click on “United States” it brings you to LetGo’s website. It’s a good place to search and list if you live in countries outside of the U.S.
24. Bookoo
Bookoo brings buyers and sellers together. They have site pages for all 50 U.S. states, as well as sites for Germany, Italy, Belgium, Japan, the UK and more.
As far as U.S. ads go, some states had dozens of cities listed while others, like Minnesota, Michigan and Idaho, had between zero and two cities listed.
Within many of the states and cities listed, however, there were quite a few ads to choose from if you’re shopping. This looks like a site that’s doing very well in some states, but still has room to grow in others.
25. Kijiji
It’s a crazy name, but Kijiji is dubbed Canada’s most popular free, local classifieds site. Kijiji shares ads in all of Canada’s major provinces and surrounding territories. Ads are listed by province and then narrowed down from there.
Categories
There are dozens of categories to choose from, including those listed below:
For sale
Housing
Electronics
Jobs
Pets
Home and garden
Community
Cars and vehicles
Services and resumes
26. U-Exchange
U-Exchange is a bit different than the other sites listed here in that it’s a bartering site – there is no cash or currency exchange. When you sign up with them, you list what services and/or products you have to offer, and what services or products you are willing to give in exchange.
There are a wide variety of services and products offered for trade and needed by others from people all over the U.S. and the world here.
27. Hoobly
Hoobly classifieds offer the usual stuff: vehicles, clothing, jobs, etc. You don’t need an account to browse listings, however you will need to create one (they’re free) to communicate with sellers or to list something for sale.
There weren’t a ton of listings on this site, but it’d be worth a look if you’re searching for something in particular. States, such as Michigan and Florida, had a lot more listings than many of the other states featured here.
How to Safely Buy and Sell These Sites
Whenever you’re buying – or selling – on websites like the ones mentioned here, it’s important to use safety precautions in an effort to prevent scammers or criminals from taking advantage of you.
You can start by never giving anyone your personal credit or debit card or other financial information. Deal in cash only (or a cashier’s check from your bank for large ticket items) and don’t give sellers money until you’re sure you are getting what you are paying for. There are also apps for sending money online.
Also, when meeting up with someone, bring a second person along if possible, meet in a public place and always let someone know where you’re going and when you should be back.
Done right, you can get some phenomenal deals using online websites!
Summary
As you can see there are a ton of great other sites like Craigslist. Whether you’re looking to sell your car, get a deal on a washing machine, you need to create extra cash flow flipping “stuff” or just need money now you have options.
Also, in the comments below, please let me know if you have tried any of these and what you think of them. Or, if I am missing any other sites, please drop me a comment below and I will get them added in!
Thanks so much!
