Queerness in Indian Media
↳Film: RRR (2022, Telugu), dir. S.S. RAJAMOULI
RRR is a historical fantasy action drama that follows Bheem (NTR Jr), a Gond warrior who is in search of a Gond girl who was taken away from their home, and Ram (Ram Charan), the British Army officer assigned to catch him. Ram and Bheem meet under false identities and quickly grow closer, but everything is thrown into chaos once the truth is revealed and Ram is forced to choose between his ambitions and his attachment to Bheem.
Long before any white person had ever heard of RRR, queer Indians were cautiously optimistic that there would be something for us in this movie. There was the song Dosti, which felt more romantic than the average song about friendship; Bheem's intense declaration toward Ram in the trailer; Rajamouli explaining that there is no boy-girl romantic song (a staple of masala Indian cinema in any language) because "the romance angle is between these two guys only...bromance...they are the heroes, they are the hero and heroine, and they are the hero and villain"; the lead actors repeatedly questioning interviewers who referred to Jenny and Seetha as Bheem and Ram's love interests; and the writer, V. Vijayendra Prasad, being a huge fan of Salim-Javed movies, particularly Sholay, whose homosocial pairing has been read as queer by queer Indians for decades.
The movie itself gave us more than we could have hoped for from a project made on such a huge scale. Ram and Bheem mimic many of the "hero and heroine" pairings in so many masala movies, doing everything from the "slow-mo staring" for the first meeting, to getting a whole montage song for the progression of their bond, to dressing each other up, to dancing together at a party, to carrying each other, to rescuing each other.
The final rescue scene is perhaps the most telling, as it twists a well-known myth from the Ramayana by putting Ram and Bheem in the position of heroine and hero. It is not Hanuman who tells Rama where to find Sita in Lanka, but instead Seetha who tells Bheem where to find Ram. Bheem, upon finding him, promises to get him out 'even if [he has] to burn this Lanka down to do it'--then promptly carries him on his shoulders the way Hanuman carried Rama, to do away with any suspicions from homophobic audiences.
Those homophobic audiences still made their complaints--a glance at the oldest comments on any clip or behind the scenes video for RRR will make that clear--but they were drowned out by the many fans of the movie. Ultimately, like with any coded movie, the interpretation is up to the individual, but it is undeniable that a number of queer Indians felt that there was a romantic bond between Ram and Bheem. To dismiss that would do a disservice to the many queer people who have, are, and always will work quietly behind the scenes to write our stories, even if they can never say so directly.

I can totally see y/n forcing rafe to watch bollywood films like zindagi na milegi dobara and yeh jawaani hai deewani and them being so invested sharing popcorn while watching, and then y/n having to explain some of the jokes and romantic dialogue cause it doesn’t translate to english properly

I watched it on Netflix but i looked it up on a few other ahem websites and on EVERY SINGLE ONE Telugu audio wasn't even an option.
there was not one single chance to tie things together or make a connection or do a setup/payoff or callback that was not taken. not a single one.

honestly i really like that ram and bheem were, well, ram and bheem. but i mean im glad they weren't like ram and lakshman or bheem and arjun or something. not even just because that would've been brotherly like i'm glad they weren't arjun and krishna or something either. i liked that their names weren't from the same story. i liked it better this way and i can't even articulate why.
i am never ever ever going to get over the progression of part of bheem's introduction being something going wrong and him holding two ropes (he has all the power) with his arms spread and that being used to show us how incredibly strong he is -> something going wrong and bheem with ropes around his wrists (he shouldn't have any power at all) holding his arms spread and that being used to show how incredibly strong he is in a completely different way
like every time there were ropes or chains in bheem's hands or around his wrists it meant something, and it was a beat in the rhythm of a discernable arc, but now i can't remember all of them gdi
oooohhhhh there was SO much more symbolism i wanted to talk about but it's so late that i have a headache and this post is so long my computer's lagging like two sentences behind so i should stop and go to bed. sigh.

Screen Direction in RRR
Okay so as a cinematography nerd, it bewilders me that during the flogging scene, there is no screen direction.
Let me explain.
In visual media, we have the 180 Rule, which basically means that stuff on the left side of the camera stays on the left, and stuff on the right side of the camera stays on the right. (There's a lot more to it, but for now let's go with that.) This gives visual continuity so you can tell what's going on and who's where, even when things are moving around.
The thing is, this rule isn't followed at all during the flogging scene. Sometimes characters are on the left facing right, then in the next shot they're on the right facing left or right facing right or however. Randomly.
I screencapped every camera shot in the scene (all 178 of them) and the only continuity of screen direction is in the shots of Jenny and the people watching the event on the right facing left, and the Governor & Co facing the camera. (In the single shot when Jenny turns around to face the Governor's wife, the camera remains in its fixed position, so that still counts as visual continuity.) Aside from that, there's absolutely no consistency of screen direction.
This isn't a thing in the other major scenes. During Bheem's first attempt to save Malli (with the animals,) he starts on the right and, except for the end, is always trying to go to the left. It's the same with the big barracks escape - starting right and going left. (This in itself is odd since (at least in Western media,) the goal is usually to go from left to right, which makes sense since that's drilled into us in reading and writing. (The LOTR and Snowpiercer movies come to mind as prime examples.) Telugu, the original language of the movie, also reads from left to right, so this whole thing struck me as odd. Then I remembered Bheem's whole mission is to rescue Malli and go back home. It's established from the beginning that home is on the left, and Malli is taken to the right. So the whole movie, the goal, both thematically and visually, is about going back home. (Ram goes back to his home roots and Bheem literally goes home.) ANYWAY.) The cinematographers obviously do know the 180 rule.
In the flogging scene however, the cinematographers don't just break the 180 rule, they snap it in pieces and trample all over it. Given how other scenes stick to the rule, this seems intentional. Why? My best guess is that they wanted to make the scene chaotic and disorienting, despite there being little actual movement of the characters. Think about it; Ram's horribly conflicted between love and duty, and Bheem's life just got turned upside down. What better way to show that than a scene that visually feels off-balance and unpredictable?
Gutsy move.

Researching Characters so you don't have to Part 2: Pavitr Prabhakar & His Dialect

Pavitr Prabhakar's accent is basically non-existent in writing. Its not like Hobie's where you make some letters silent and enunciate specific parts of the words. Indian accents, especially Pav's aren't shown through writing, which is perfectly fine. The difficult part of trying to write Pavitr Prabhakar is his dialect, not his accent.
Like I explained in my last post, dialect and accents aren't the same thing. An accent is the way someone pronounces things while the dialect is an accent along with vocabulary and grammar. Pavitr's dialect would be heavily influenced by Mumbai dialect, considering the fact that he lives in Mumbattan.
First off, Indians speak English. Like if you go to India, I guarantee that 90% of the people there under the age of 40 will speak fairly fluent English. Schools in India teach multiple languages, one of them usually being English, and Indian children are almost fluent in English by the age of 10-13. Its basically a necessity.
So if you're going to write Pav, don't butcher his English and make him sound like he doesn't speak it well, because thats not true. Most Indians speak English really well, and you shouldn't feed into the stereotypes with your writing.
However, he would speak a mixture of languages together. Think of it like Spanglish, where you use English grammar for Spanish words. Its the same thing with Indians. They often toss a couple of English words into a sentence using the grammar of whatever language they're speaking, whether its Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, etc. They would also do it the other way around, tossing Hindi/Marathi/etc phrases into English sentences. So if you're going to write Pav, writing him tossing in Hindi phrases is going to be a lot more accurate than writing broken English or even full English, Especially if you're going to be writing him with his aunt, uncle or Gayatri, because they are all going to be speaking the same, if not a similar language, even if you're going to write them in English.
There's not much else to say, besides the fact that Indians tend to use some English words much more than they do in the west. For example Indians say the word "bro" a lot. Its seen in movies and just in general as well. Teenage boys and young adult men say "bro" almost all the time, usually referring to their friends, classmates, cousins, etc. But, they wouldn't say it to someone older to them or someone they need to be respectful towards, like a boss etc.
Some other phrases (Hindi) that Indians tend to use a lot are:
Bhaiyya (older brother - used to refer to boys older than you)
Achha? (really? - often used sarcastically but can also be used normally)
Arre! (Hey, hey you! - used to call someone, used to get someone's attention)
Yaar (friend - light/friendly slang term for a friend)

In this Telugu action movie, Ram Charan is once again annoyingly invincible.This is quite typical for Indian action movies, especially Telugu, where the hero is invulnerable until it comes the time to martyr him. So, in "Naayak" there are a lot of fighting scenes where he is barely scratched, but there are also several moments to savour.
He plays two characters, Cherry and Siddharth, who are complete lookalikes. And no, they are not relatives, or clones, their similarity isn't explained in any way. And they both have their whumpy moments.
Siddharth:
59:50 - emerges from under the water like feaking Aquaman with a freaking TRIDENT, all sexy wet, fights, gets electroshocked and carried away.
1:20:40 - finds his brother dead and cries, hugging the body.
1:43:40 - hit over thr head, dizzy, spewing blood, stabbed thrice, presumed dead.
1:45 - drowns, comes to his senses in the water.
Cherry:
59:35 - at the gunpoint.
1:59 - gives himself for Siddharth, is brutally beaten and hanged from the construction crane with explosive vest on (he survives).
Alas, V. V. Vinayak, the director, missed the golden opportunity to torture Siddharth in the prison (which is allowed in India), and the moments of Cherry's whump in bandits' hands are on the "blink and you miss it" level. Shame on you, Mr. V. V. Vinayak. Shame on you.

Nani regrets lashing out against Arshad Warsi for his remark about Kalki 2898 AD turned Prabhas into a ‘joker’: “My choice of words was poor”
Nani, a Telugu celebrity, is in damage control mode after his comments on Arshad Warsi generated a new scandal. Nani found himself trending online just a day after releasing the teaser for his new film, Surya's Saturday, but not for the reasons he had planned. The dispute erupted after a journalist questioned Warsi about his criticism of Prabhas' involvement in the summer movie Kalki 2898 AD. Warsi had expressed his dissatisfaction with Prabhas' portrayal on Unfiltered by Samdish, referring to him as a 'joker' and comparing him to Mel Gibson in Mad Max.
Nani's initial reaction, when translated into English, appeared harsh. "The guy you are referring about must have received the maximum publicity in his life. "You are unnecessarily glorifying an insignificant issue," he was quoted as saying. While this elicited cheers from Prabhas' followers, it caused outrage from Hindi filmgoers who perceived it as an insult to Warsi.
In an interview with Mid-Day, Nani emphasized that his remarks were 'lost in translation.' He acknowledged his feelings for Prabhas and his natural desire to defend him but said that his opinion changed after watching the entire video of Warsi's interview.

When technology is introduced in the classroom it is called technology-enabled education or education using digital Aids.
I am an 80’s Kid. I grew up in a traditional chalk and blackboard environment and being a topper of class, I was forced to sit in the first lane taking all the chalk dust onto my face and uniform. Of course, this does not have to do with this context, just I wanted you to remember that I grew up in the traditional education system.
English and Telugu were okay, but when biology, physics, and chemistry were taught it was a fun time for us. Because our teacher used to draw a diagram and she used to take 15 minutes and our class was 40 minutes duration. After drawing she could get only 25 minutes times to explain.
While the teacher was drawing on the board, we were busy with our in-door and on-bench games. Similarly, the same scene for physics and chemistry classes. Ample time used to go waste in the drawing.
Visual Learning’s Challenges in Traditional Education
Many times, we could not visualize what the teacher explained. Sometimes it was very difficult to remember too. Somehow we passed out and if you ask me, I don’t remember anything I learnt that time as it was never registered in my brain.
But, I can tell the story of Nagarjuna’s Shiva or Chiranjeevi's Gang Leader Movie story, fully even though I saw it almost 25 years back.
So, is this because I lack interest in education? and interest in movies?
The answer is NO. Even though I had an interest in education, my brain did not register the subject. My brain registered only English or Telugu subjects as I didn’t need to visualize anything. In the case of biology, and physical science, I need a lot of visuals to register which was missing in those days.
