um now that you mention it, my own hands start hurting after drawing for too long ,,, do you know where I could learn those stretches you mentioned ???
If you find that your hand/wrist/arm/shoulder get painful when you're working on art set a timer for 1 hour [if you feel severe pain, you should rest, but in lieu of that, set your timer for every half hour.]
Every time that timer goes off, you can go through these stretches. They're the ones I do, anyway:
Do this thing with your arm extended, grab the fingertips in your other hand and pull back. You should feel a gentle stretch in your forearm. I will hold both of those positions for around 10 seconds. You can hold for longer if you want a better stretch. Some people hold it for 20-30 seconds.
Then I repeat those stretches but with my palm facing inwards like this:
I like to curl my fingers when I do it too. Wiggle em around a little.
After that, place your palm flat on the table and bend your elbow at a 90° angle, like you're doing your best impression of an alligator crawling out of the water. [Or if you're a nerd like me, you can pretend you're summoning the jaguar from Road to El Dorado:
[getting on the ground isn't necessary for your dramatic recreation, you can do it on your desk. Anyway.]
With your elbow bent at the angle, you're going to push down gently on your palm and roll your wrist in a circle. This loosens up your elbow and your shoulder, as well as rotates your wrist.
After that, roll your shoulders a few times. Shrug them a few more.
Then extend your arms out to your sides [T-pose for dominance] and make circles with your arms. Big and small. You can do 10 big and 10 small, or just make circles to your heart's content.
Finally, wiggle it out. Pretend you're in grade school and your teacher just told you to wiggle out your energy. Do your best impression of a limp loose rubber goose. Just get silly. This is just to shake out any remaining stiffness, and gives you an excuse to stand up, if you haven't done so already.
If you're incorporating these stretches into your art routine, now is also a good time to take a drink of water. Stay hydrated.
Important things to remember:
At no point in time should these stretches cause severe pain. If you feel shooting pains, pins and needles in your hand/fingertips, or burning in your muscles, stop what you're doing and rest. That is your body telling you something is wrong and it wants time to heal. Whatever you're doing, it will wait.
Also, if you find you are resting, but everything still hurts, one thing I've done in the past is sleep with a wrist brace. This keeps your wrist/hand from flopping around and getting into awkward positions at night. If you too would like to sleep with a wrist brace, remember to keep the brace firm but loose. It should be firm enough to keep you from bending your wrist all the way, not so tight that it cuts off blood flow, makes you sore, or makes your fingers tingle. Especially if your joints swell at night.
This is not a magic fix for your wrist/arm issues. I am not a medical professional or a personal trainer. Do get help if you have pain that lasts more than a week, or at a severity that it impacts your daily life, or makes it hard to pick up objects.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.
#spazzcat barks#answering asks#anonymous#hey by the way#resting includes not playing video games#not using a keyboard/mouse#not doing wrist intensive crafts like knit and crochet#if you stop drawing to do something else that involves fine motor skills and wrist/gand control#your pain will continue or get worse#mine flairs up the most if i play video games for more than an hour a day

Ah, I always seem to hurt my wrist around the same time every year. Maybe I'm gripping everything a little bit tighter because it's the end of the school year? I think I can trace what happened to aggravate it this time:
Playing too many games on my phone (nyt connections) -> Pain alleviated by stopping -> Aggravated again by playing too much Splatoon -> Playing too much stitch. -> Playing too much stitch. -> Scrubbed the shower -> Playing too much stitch. -> Cutting stickers for too long
CONCLUSION: I need a gamer break
#I thought stitch. wouldn't aggravate it too much because picross doesn't cause much stress to play#but it has a different button system were you don't press and hold only click#it's like clicking the mouse too many times; there's no variation in clicking that repetitively stresses the muscles (and nerves I guess)#My left hand was staring to tingle today and ho kay!! I really need to show some self restraint!!#<- SHE IS PHYSICALLY HURTING HERSELF IN ORDER TO PLAY MORE OF A SO CALLED 'COZY' GAME#Got to go to a funeral this weekend out a state which sucks and is but at least I can finally give my wrist a rest!!#I've worked on the ergonomics of my digital drawing set up a lot so at least I can still draw on my tablet! ^_^#But not while I'm out of state.... and not in my sketchbook...

i just want to draw, this is getting ridiculous
yes it is counter intuitive to draw myself complaining, when drawing is presumably the source of said pain. but it's surprisingly cathartic.
#i started drawing again recently bc my hand hurt anyway#so how much worse could it get#the answer will not surprise you!#also my other wrist also hurts#presumably from using the mouse and typing? not sure#either way it's bullshit and i want a refund#for those wondering yes i have rested#a lot#yes i've worn braces and seen doctors and gotten tests done#nothing has worked and it's been almost 3 goddamn years#the answer is probably something like#'rest for 1-2 months straight with no exertion and then immediately go into PT for another few months to recover before doing anything else#but without a guarantee that would work i can't exactly do that#also i dont have access to PT anyway#im rambling i'll stop#sketch#sketch art

Ok the LotLDTIYS drawing is FINALLY ready! I’m following my release schedule for YouTube and posting the speedpaint Friday afternoon, so expect the official announcement here around the same time!
Also quick PSA: if you’re an artist, STRETCH YOUR WRISTS AND TAKE BREAKS. If you use a keyboard/mouse all day, GET THE GOOD SHIT. I now use the wavy keyboard with the wrist rests and a vertical mouse but I didn’t switch soon enough. Tendonitis is a BITCH and a half (and Carpal tunnel is apparently WORSE). Do not suffer the same fate as me.
The LotLDTIYS sketch was done like 3 weeks ago and it was supposed to be finished/posted 2 weeks ago, but I was unable to draw until this past weekend cause my wrists felt like garbage. Learn from my suffering.
So I hope you’re all as excited as I am! See you Friday!
#lotldtiys#land of the living#Ninjago#announcement#also don’t worry too much about my wrists I’m going to physical therapy for it and my doctor specifically WANTS me to draw#I’m fine I promise#just dramatic#it’s more annoying than actually painful#but still be careful#my coworkers all think I’m deranged cause I actually got a left-handed vertical mouse even though I’m right-handed#but I want to rest my right hand as much as possible so I can still draw#can anyone else just casually switch from a right-handed to a left-handed mouse?#maybe it’s cause I play piano and you gotta be able to do that shit independently with both hands? idk lol

What I typed:
Twas brillig and the slithy toves did gyre and gimbel upon the wabe, all mimsy were the borogroves and the mome raths outgabe.
#Typing#Because I'm bored and it amused me to show off my eccentric typing style#(One right finger plus left thumb and two left fingers mostly)#Yeah my right hand has to travel a lot when typing like this#And the left sometimes crosses over into what's normally the right hand side of the keyboard when it's a closer reach for it#40-odd years of typing and apart from a few years in high school when I was concentrating on it I've never really been a home-row typist#On the other hand with my hands floating around this way rather then resting in a tilted-back home row position#Despite often typing at speed for MANY hours of the day#I have only very rarely had any symptoms of carpal tunnel#And that mostly in my mousing hand following lengthy sessions of mousing while gaming#Because when my hand is on the mouse it tends to be flexed back at the wrist rather than in a more neutral position

so here's a fun thing i have learned after starting my new job. turns out you can get "tennis"/"golfer's" elbow just from using a mouse all day. like it is also now being called "mouse elbow."
repetitive stress/use injuries gonna manifest no matter what i guess.
#anyway i already use a wrist rest in both my office and home workspace and now i have a tennis elbow brace to wear#but i'm also like idk am i positioning this right#*crosses fingers*#tennis elbow#mouse elbow#this has been a post
