In 1968, researcher John B. Calhoun conducted a famous experiment known as “Universe 25,” in which he created a "mouse utopia" with unlimited food, water, and no predators. At first, the mouse population grew rapidly, but as overcrowding increased, their social behaviors began to deteriorate.
Mice formed aggressive cliques, mothers neglected or attacked their offspring, and some individuals became isolated and apathetic.
Despite the continued abundance of resources, reproduction eventually ceased altogether, and the population collapsed to extinction.
Calhoun described this phenomenon as a "behavioral sink," suggesting that social breakdown, rather than material scarcity, was responsible for the collapse.

Happy 38th Anniversary, An American Tail
Today is the 38th Anniversary of Don Bluth's An American Tail!
It had been 38 years since we have seen young Fievel Mousekewitz had his first adventure in America alongside his new friends, Tony Toponi and Tiger.
So I am announcing that I will be roleplaying the characters of that film here.

imagine you have almost unlimited magical powers and live in a post-scarcity utopia with flying cars and teleportation and supposedly no illness or violence but that is slowly rotting over the course of a century because an entity of cosmic evil which no one knew existed before is corrupting people into doing theft and hatecrimes on each other for the first time ever so you decide to get yours while the getting is good so you swear allegiance to the cosmic horror corrupting your society but then you accidentally get trapped outside of reality in the pit of all evil and now that guy you were having fun playing cat and mouse with has been dead for what they say is three thousand years and there's no bitcoin to embezzle or biomedical research to fuck with and you’re stuck with these short lived practically illiterate peasants who don't even know what electrons are, much less have running water or know who you, fantasy bin laden, are or are capable of so they don't know they're supposed to be afraid of you. that’s the last month from the forsakens' perspective.

Joy | j.wooyoung

ꨄ summary: as a child at heart, he takes his family to a magical place.
ꨄ pairing: wooyoung x fem!reader
ꨄ genres: romance, family, and fluff
ꨄ word count: 0.8k words
ꨄ warnings/tags: none. established relationship. idol!wooyoung, non-idol!reader, married couple, wooyoung is the cutest father
ꨄ a/n: yay!! i finally got the chance to write again! wooyo made me soft in this one

“Hello, Atiny!”
A bubbly voice from a handsome, cute, sweet, talented, and hot man waves at the phone.
Wooyoung begins to talk about today’s adventure. “I am in the hotel bathroom because I just got done showering and ready to head out with my little family. I would’ve made the members come along, but they denied it because they wanted me to have a good time. Ever since we’ve been touring, I haven’t seen my family for a while. To my surprise and happiness, the love of my life and the babies came out here to see me.”
He sighs softly because he still can’t believe his wife is doing it for him and the kids. Wooyoung continues, “I am truly blessed to have amazing people in my life. So, to make it up to them, I bought Disneyland tickets. Woohoo!” He does a tiny fist bump in the air. “And yes, Atiny. Your Wooyo is taking you there.” He nods his head earnestly with a wide smile.
The video transitions from wet-haired Wooyoung in pajamas to a much dapper Wooyoung. He is dressed in a yellow button-up, ripped denim jeans, and tennis shoes. The man goes for something casual because he wants to feel and look comfortable. He reveals himself through a full mirror in the hotel room.
“I don’t usually wear bright colors, but I figured it was appropriate for a place with excitement,” Wooyoung stated. He gingerly brushes his long bangs that frame his face. “I am keeping this a little longer. I think it’s my favorite out of all hairstyles.” Not only he, but his wife agrees. You like how super soft his hair is.
He then hears high yet adorable singing voices. Wooyoung turns his attention to the noise. A grin etched on his rosy lips. He sees you putting on matching outfits for the kids.
The Jung Twins are the prince and princess of ATEEZ.
Wooyoung moves his attention back to the phone. He still has that smile. “Y/N has Woobin and Wonhee dressed as Mickey and Minnie Mouse.” The father couldn’t stop looking at his angels. He predicts the uncles will die of cuteness once he takes millions of pictures. Woobin and Wonhee have their father’s gorgeous eyes and inherit his playful behavior. As much as the members find it cute, they believe it’s uncanny.
Little Wooyoungs can cause more chaos. However, the guys love them to death.
“Is everyone done?” Wooyoung asked his family.
“Yes, appa!” The little ones answered in unison.
“We are ready!” You joined your kids.
He shifts his gaze from his gaze to his beautiful wife. You are matching his yellow top but with a pretty sundress. Wooyoung is oblivious about being mesmerized by you that he forgets he is still recording. Soon enough, he clears his throat and yells out. “Let’s go!”
The munchkins trailed behind Wooyoung like ducklings in a line. You happily giggled at how they’ll forever follow their dad.
In the vehicle, Wooyoung tells the viewers they are heading to Disneyland while listening to ATEEZ. During the drive, he shows a bit of his kids singing. The twin’s favorite song is Utopia because it brings them comfort. Also, they love to sing along to Uncle Seonghwa’s high-note.
An hour later, the family arrived at the amusement park. Wooyoung got greeted by a few Atinys when entering. Plus, they recognized you and the twins. Wooyoung heard the fans yell they wished them the best of luck as a family.
“Thank you!”
The idol gives his appreciation for his fans’ love. He sends them a finger heart, and they return the gesture.
Wooyoung turns on his phone to film more videos. He has you record him walking with the kids. Woobin and Wonhee hold one of their father’s hands and swing them back n forth. Wooyoung speaks, “I feel like a little boy again. I missed coming to places like this. But I am grateful to experience it with my family."
"Right, guys?” He looks down at his children. Wonhee nods and flashes a cheery smile. “Appa! The castle is so pretty!” Woobin points his tiny finger up ahead. Wooyoung might’ve melted on the spot.
His babies are too cute!
Overall, the four were having endless fun. Wooyoung and his family went on thrilling rides, took pictures with Disney characters, ate delicious food, and gravitated to the park’s beauty. For the final shot of his vlog, Wooyoung records the fireworks.
A rainbow of stars in the galaxy blossoms the night.
Wooyoung stops recording to bring you into a back hug as the kids watch in awe at the bursting colors. He rests his chin on your shoulder. You turned your neck to see him. The fireworks created enough brightness to show your husband’s smiling face. Wooyoung leans close to press his soft, elegant lips onto yours.
“Do you regret marrying me? I haven’t been there for you, Woobin, and Wonhee.” The husband asked his wife in a solemn voice.
You let out a snicker. “Of course not! I vowed to love and care for the biggest baby in the world. Plus, raising the angels of our lives.” Despite his music career, you tell your husband you’ll always be there for him.
Wooyoung's content smile never left his face.

Researchers at Yale University have shown that educated people are more unshakable in their convictions than anybody. After all, an education gives you tools to defend your opinions. Intelligent people are highly practiced in finding arguments, experts, and studies that underpin their preexisting beliefs, and the Internet has made it easier than ever to be consumers of our own opinions, with another piece of evidence always just a mouse-click away.

I know that many ancaps/libertarians are pro population growth and pro development, I however think that the global population and megacities are a government abomination. I keep thinking that places like the UK/Beltway/LA of USA are so fucked up because they don't have any real wilderness left. it's just a cultivated grid of human housing, industry, agriculture, the largest undomesticated creature being a racoon or fox or something pathetically small and unthreatening. Even the meme "birds aren't real" I think is a riff on this; you live in a 100% man-made environment, even the birds might as well be government spy robots.
When you fundamentally have to interact with an artificial rules based world all the time you have a tendency to systematize everything, and believe the lie that imaginary things like laws and governments are real physical things, and not just the whims of the police officer on the corner. Somewhat like abuse victims internalize the rules of their abuser to avoid punishment and cope. The urban landscape is the breeding ground of the cancerous and parasitic human survival strategy we identify as socialism/collectivism/progressivism.
The only real laws are those of nature, physics, chemistry, biology, evolution. Humans are an animal and we adapt to our environment, which is a mouse utopia. The modern world is so sick and against nature because our power to wall it out of our lives has created a hubris to rebel against these things. Progressivism in a sense, is rejection of natural order, a rejection of subjection to nature or nature's God. This is how you get to where we are today. I don't need to list the examples, but the unreality of thinking we can abolish scarcity, inequality, sex, the family, etc...
I don't want civilization and cities and humans not to exist. I just want radical concentrations of those things. We had 2.5% the global population in antiquity and still got innovative and talented thinkers that we still discuss today, artists, engineers, etc. These people had ample access to an untamed world, one that was unpredictable, and challenged them.
The urban human is a domesticated one. They have no real self-determination. Without a world unmade by humans, they have no reference for something beyond the imagination of another human, no blank canvas to make their own. Like the shadows of Plato's cave I'd wager it's like a person forced to look into a mirror their entire life. They would have no ability to identify themselves in the mirror as they have no reference that the mirror isn't just the entire world.
Climbing mountains, navigating rapids, scaling rock walls, skiing couloirs... the physical conquest of nature yields a surprise that cannot be claimed from an artificial challenge.
Think of the sweating, yelling, heaving mass of Cairo,
Bangladesh
Lagos
Mexico city
You might just assume they make great films, music, art, thinkers, engineers, and we just don't hear about them because they don't get distributed here or something. No it's just a mass of human flesh consuming the natural world, no ability to reflect and create, just consume.
Almost all of these places import food from the temperate climates of developed nations. A two year breakdown of global supply chains would result in them starving in the millions.
Even here in western civilization we yield the prime 'high-density walkable" real-estate to degenerates via council and section 8 housing.
Government programs of fiat currency, the welfare-warfare state, followed by deindustrialization has resulted in a massive mismatch in human population and economic/environmental capacity. Sure, here's where someone could politely chime in that "humans have infinite creative capacity, we just need to unlock their potential and your Malthusian doomsday is no more" and I grant that to a degree.
But massive declines in human population, the standard of living, and technology are regular historical occurrences. Western science has had an absolute "ick" towards actually understanding and implementing Darwinism towards human populations. Country-wide datasets of IQ probably remain stable due to the continuing rise/Flynn effect of the middle/upper class offsetting the sliding downward of the welfare class. There's no evolutionary biologist who wouldn't recognize that the market economy selects for intelligence and the welfare state was our feeble altruistic effort to carry the "but I did have breakfast" population along with us.
We've had nearly a century and, in some cases of repeated teen pregnancies, 6 or 7 generations who were never asked to provide for themselves meaningfully. They live in an ever more confusing world of late payments, cash advances, welfare office applications, prison stints, evictions, and unplanned pregnancies. Each generation more befuddled than the last. Recent studies show that there have been population bottlenecks through human evolution. In the bronze age as few as 1 in 17 men reproduced at all.
Biological imperatives of reproduction rule over all other sentiments and altruistic masochism. For the silent generation and the boomers, the welfare state was a token price they agreed to pay to keep the peace and they could afford it as they got race-rioted out of their downtown homes into the suburbs. Now the jig is up and millennials en-masse are finding that they can't afford to have kids *intentionally*. They look at their pay stub getting taxed at 40% so that, over at the section 8 housing, "baby mamas" collect government checks for the consequence of a hookup with serial felons, who are also housed and fed with working people's taxes. The boomers made a devil's bargain, they cucked their children!
Now we enter the final death spiral of empires and welfare states: below replacement fertility rates and above GDP national debt!
The group most prepared for the coming calamity, the group who predicted it, and who will emerge as victors are those who are internally pro-growth/pro population but maintain in-group preferences. The stats bear out:
Now this shift isn't just conservatives but libertarians also. In a couple generations we have gone from 1% in the 70's to 10% in the 2010s and now easily 25% in the 2020's (many libertarians simply don't vote or vote republican). We will replace left-wingers, who only reproduce vampirically via public education, in the next generation. There is hope at the end of this journey but it will be difficult in the mean time. Prepare yourself accordingly.

@kiokijin @sirbonesly @anonmousegosqueak! The transportation system! It's literally integrated in the plot to be relevant at MINIMUM in the second and third act of the first book (the thing I said about domestic terrorism my or may not actually happen, but I really like the idea of something created by the government that is against it in the worst of ways without having to hit civilians) and it doesn't have to be super in-depth because how many people do you know that nerds on transportation systems (escluding me obviously, if you are interested there is a youtube channel calle NotJustBikes that is where my most knowledge comes from)? No? OK, your social circle is normal. Basically in still indecisive between suspended rails (look futuristic but aren't efficient and distract quite a lot) and underground rails (realistic, more cost effective, actually provides cover if you are trying to hide, can me made multi-level to add an extra layer of complexity and efficiency) so… I guess it shows where I want to go. It looks almost completly like a modern transportation system, it doesnt make sense to make it that much faster than what we already have but it can be extensive and can have some cool features like wagon separation (basically it is divided in half and at a certain stop one half goes in one direction and one half goes to the other, it is particularly good for the suburbs of the city if you don't have a lot of people but making them wait half an hour between public transportation would be a little too cruel🫠 (I see you Padua and your waiting times)
Also you can consider that all cars are automatized and constantly communicating via satellite connection (so if all the cars know where everyone is, it is easier to avoid accidents) but this also adds the idea that you can be tracked every time you use a car😎👈😎👈 (i know, it's an incredible obstacle)
Also there are obviously busses and other types of transportation, but it's basically a monopoly of the producers, who have ma5ching designs so all the cars and busses 1)March and 2) are aesthetically pleasing on the streets. Obviously the car manufacturer is government approved (like 95% of the public stuff available)
Opinions? Ideas? Improvements? Next topic?
☝️☝️☝️
I don't know what else to say, this is amazing on its own and I feel like anything I'd add would just make it worse. 。:゚(;´∩`;)゚:。
May I suggest -mostly because I never see it in any type of dystopia and I'm curious- what about pets?
You might be like "wtf Mouse, what do you mean?" And to that I say "my brain is scrambled like bacon, let me have this"
So going back to other dystopias, I feel like it's just never mentioned. I'm not exactly mad, I understand, but I'm curious about your world. I mean usually the utopia with the happy people walking dogs or the dystopian leaders with small scruffy dogs (I have a small dog and will not be getting into the small dog debate right now).
Is it one of those things that just isn't on the table (aka no one has pets and it's not normal or whatever)? Is it a privilege?
Again, it doesn't usually come up so consider this your certified "mouse's difficult question for world building"™
You don't have to answer, either way I'll still love your writing!

Last Monday of the Tuesday 2025-01-26
Got waylaid by situations, sorry. It will happen again.
Listening
The entirety of the BADBADNOTGOOD album BBNG2
Ya like jazz? Ya like big spooky electronic jazz? BBNG2 has it for you.
Reading
Working my way through Pale Fire by Nabokov. It's a very funny book, and also very odd. I can see why they call it perhaps the first hypertext!
The poem itself is 1000 lines in rhyming couplets with Vladimir "I Just Learned English And I'm Using The Whole Thing" Nabokov flair. It's very pleasing to read out loud.
Still working my way through the notes. The eBook I bought lacks the index so I had to pirate a copy for that. RIP Nabokov you would have loved Homestuck.
Watching
We had Megalopolis at Bad Movie Night. This movie is not good and a lot of it is straightforwardly shit but some of its failure modes are interesting.
This movie vacillates between looking pretty good and looking totally dogshit. I don't know if Coppola was trying to be like ooh what if I use an old fashioned looking rear projection technique for this elevator scene because Movies nah dog. It looks like garbage. A lot of this movie looks like it was a PS3 game cutscene, both in texture and in thoughtfulness of framing.
"Average man thinks about Rome every day" factoid actually a statistical error, References Coppola, who lives on a wine farm and thinks about Rome every twenty milliseconds, was an outlier adn should not have been counted. Seriously man so much of this movie is making a reference to a cool thing that Coppola has seen. Getting Adam Driver to deliver To Be Or Not To Be is so fucking tryhard.
Unfortunately when you write about utopias you put yourself in a very vulnerable position where you are saying not just that I think this way of living is good, but that everyone else should as well. This movie has some lines that would get you the Liberal award in Disco Elysium in two seconds flat. Adam Driver stands up at the end to give a huge speech about how we have to have a serious debate about the future. I pregamed this one with Metropolis (1927) and it also suffers from this. Yes Fritz I know you didn't know that the great war was gonna get a sequel but you can't just make a movie that's like "Communism is cool. But watch out!"
Look okay I hate big name actors in movies now. If you're going to sell your wine farm and spend one hundred million dollars making your thing, maybe don't spend so much money on candles Giancarlo Esposito. This is a thing that sucked about Cats as well. There's so many Guys in this movie and at no point did I ever want to call a guy by anything other than their real human name. I don't care if your name is Fundi that is Laurence Fucking Fishburne. Maybe get some normal actors, you have 100 million dollars, surely you can find some.
It's so funny to set a story about building fucking anything in New York City, The City That Hasn't Built Shit In 80 Years.
Playing
I've finished most of the major sidequests of Cyberpunk but I'm now doing Phantom Liberty and man the opening of Phantom Liberty is slick. I love it when a game makes you feel urgency even though there isn't any. It's one of my favourite video game tricks. Busy trying not to eat shit as I approach the crashed spaceship of the president of the New United States of America.
They finally put some good outfits in the game but they're all hidden inside Phantom Liberty! I walked up to the first clothing vendor in Dogtown and bought like half their stock. There's zany skintight leotards and cool helmets and bizzare transparent blazers oh my! Where is this shit in the main game.
Making
Spent a while debugging cursed filament on my printer, which was frustrating.
Ongoing design of small coffee table. Throwing away a lot of half-assed CAD models.
Tools and Equipment
If you have to use a mouse in a very confined space, you really should consider a trackball. Trackpads are all good and well but there's a reason why so many CAD platforms in workshops have a trackball superglued to an piece of sheet steel. One of my other projects is a lapboard for my HTPC setup and I have basically settled on "slotted in commodity trackball" as the ideal way to handle mouse input here.

i really resent the growing idea that media with clear cut queer representation is inherently better than its counterparts with just queer themes and allegory. stop patting corporations on the back for the slop they throw on your tray in the hopes you’ll spare them a single dollar. the guy who wrote all the songs in the little mermaid (1989) was a man named howard ashman, and if you didn’t know, he died of aids shortly after the movie made it to theaters, two years to be exact. many of the people who worked on the film talked about how condition worsened as the production chugged along, and how through all of this, he poured his heart and soul into those goddamn lyrics. working tirelessly to tell the story HE wanted to tell. obviously no one would have allowed a children’s movie with a gay main character during the fucking reagan administration amidst the aids epidemic. so instead of a story about a teenager coming out as gay, she comes out as “loving humans”. the rest of the queer allegory is kinda obvious if i’m being honest. the only part that matters for this discussion is the ending. king triton accepts ariel for who she is, and lets her love who she loves. and now to this day, the little mermaid has stuck with queer people (and more specifically trans women, but i digress) to the point you can regularly see mermaid imagery throughout queer organizations and online groups.
howard ashman’s life was cut short by aids, and a huge part of that is undeniably due to the rampant homophobic discrimination. he’s dead, but now his story lives on as one of the most important films of film history. a story that will be remembered long after his death, and probably ours as well. that’s fucking beautiful! and it’s all possible because of queer allegory and storytelling. to act is if this film would have been better if ariel was actually trans or gay is foolish. we’re never going to live in a utopia where anti-queer bigotry is eradicated, and howard stern certainly never got to either. so to write off stories like these for “not actually having gay characters” is foolish as well. to do so ignores the queer history we should be preserving, and continuing to tell. would faceshopping be better if sophie said “i am a transgender woman”? how about the matrix? the only correct response is a resounding no.
if the revolution comes, i want mickey mouse’s head served on a platter.

Oh, don't you wonder when the light begins to fade? And the clock just makes the colors turn to grey Forever younger, growing older just the same All the memories that we make will never change
Young and Beautiful by Lana Del Rey
Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful? Will you still love me when I got nothing but my aching soul? I know you will, I know you will, I know that you will

“Cognitive dissonance,” he coined it. When reality clashes with our deepest convictions, we’d rather recalibrate reality than amend our worldview. Not only that, we become even more rigid in our beliefs than before. Mind you, we tend to be quite flexible when it comes to practical matters. Most of us are even willing to accept advice on how to remove a grease stain or chop a cucumber. No, it’s when our political, ideological, or religious ideas are at stake that we get the most stubborn. We tend to dig in our heels when someone challenges our opinions about criminal punishment, premarital sex, or global warming. These are ideas to which people tend to get attached, and that makes it difficult to let them go. Doing so affects our sense of identity and position in social groups – in our churches or families or circles of friends. One factor that certainly is not involved is stupidity. Smart people, concludes the American journalist Ezra Klein, don’t use their intellect to obtain the correct answer; they use it to obtain what they want to be the answer.
