im current like... a cardrive away from ploiesti, romania. cannot wait for rolin jones to be MORE xenophobic than the old xenophobic woman who wrote this in the 60s while pretending he knows and "challenges" the original material.

mountainmen!141 x Reader
Let's say you leave the city behind to rent a small cabin in the middle of the woods you found on the internet under the name of John Price.
Let's say you meet him for the first time when you get to the cabin. He waits for you to give you the keys and show you around. He mentions that they live nearby, at the other end of a narrow path winding through the trees.
Let's say you call him because you can't shut the bedroom window, but instead of John, a man named Johnny shows up. His accent is thick, and his words are sometimes hard to follow, but he fixes the window for you.
Let's say you go over to them after a few days with some cookies. When you get there, you meet Kyle, who invites you in for tea. He explains that the others have gone into town to pick up supplies for the approaching storm.
Let's say when the storm finally hits, it's worse than expected. Simon comes over to check on you, making sure you are safe in the cabin.
and maybe maybe
Let's say looks can mislead. Here they are, buff, handsome men, living together in the middle of the woods. You'd think they could have any woman they wanted, right?
But why are they here then, isolated like this?
I will tell you why.
Despite their successful military careers, their personal lives have always been a mess.
John? Divorced. Twice. His job and his loyalty to his men team always came first. His marriages didn't last long. His wives left when they realized they would never be his priority.
Simon doesn't talk much. Stoic to a fault. It's hard to build a relationship when you barely say a word. He is great under pressure, but dating? A whole different battlefield.
Kyle? He learned early that his looks are more of a curse than a blessing. No one ever trusted him. His partners always thought he'd cheat. He's charming, fun, and smart, so why would a guy like him settle for just one person when it seems like he could have anyone?
And Johnny, poor Johnny. He's never been with a woman. People say he's too clingy, too much in every way. He wears his heart on his sleeve, and not everyone can handle that.
But now, you are in the picture too, aren't you?

Aight so, I've only read about 200 of the +1400 anecdotes Evald Tang Kristensen collected about hillfolk/mountainmen/trolls/dwarves/undergrounders, but already I feel confident saying 1) those used to just be different names for the same phenomenon until nationalistic folklorists came along in the 1800s and wanted to define a "Danish folklore canon," and until they were commercialized in the 1900s which only made them even more separated terms, and 2) the hillfolk bear a lot of similarities with the anecdotes I've heard about djinn - they're primarily people, not "creatures," and they can be as good or bad, as strange or predictable, and as private or outgoing as humans. They really just appear as... people, y'know?? Not human, they live by different customs and have certain abilities that humans lack, but they're people, as much as humans are. There are a lot of vættr who can be defined clearly, like the brook horse, the night mare, or the lindworm, but the hillfolk? You'll have as much luck defining the hillfolk as you'll have defining humans.

Yeah. There's a whole genre of conservative-aimed television over here, faux-documentary shows about ~mountainmen~ and other such nonsense, that's pretty much dedicated to making its audience hyperventilate about predators. There's like 16 people who own 80% of Wyoming and the Dakotas, and the amount of money they've put in to trying to relegalize wolf-extermination because "they're a danger to cattle" is absurd.
As much as we Americans give guff (and rightfully so) to Europeans for being so weird about nature, let's not forget that Americans are super not immune to it either.
Americans insist constantly that coyotes are going to attack children (your child is exponentially more likely to be seriously injured by their own dog) or that coyotes lure dogs to their deaths by leading them into the waiting pack (your stupid idiot dog with no recall chased a pack of coyotes that fought back and suddenly the coyotes are at fault here?)
But the one that drove me insane the most was the guy who shot the first opossum to be documented this far north in hundreds of years because he was afraid that a 3 pound opossum was going to kill his dog.
It's barely bigger than a guinea pig I promise you it's not going to eat your fucking husky you brain dead idiot loser. Stop being such a mindless coward.

Scotty V. Casper has written a WESTERN FRONTIER... Historical Mountain Men making their way through the American Frontier.
Tumblr media
During the early days of America, people clustered together along the eastern seaboard, but after many years brave pioneers began venturing westward and each stop along the way was considered the Western Frontier. Then in 1764 American pioneers settled St. Louis on the Mississippi River, and it became the newest Western Frontier. Thirty years later Lewis and Clark’s expedition traveled all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Once the expedition returned to Washington DC with their report, trappers began moving out to the West to trap beaver. At that time there was a big demand for beaver pelts because gentlemen in the east and in Europe were fond of hats and other accessories made from beaver pelts.
In the 1820s, and into the 1830s, there were roughly 3,000 trappers roving about the Rocky Mountains. They enjoyed the wide open spaces and the freedom afforded them trapping beaver in the Rockies; it was a magical era. But trapping beaver was hazardous. Trappers were killed by Indians, grizzly bears, snakes, rivers, exposure, gun accidents, and by other means.
Jax Jepperson, our protagonist in this tale, starts out from St. Louis to ride by horseback to the Wasatch in the Rocky Mountains. He wants to be a mountain man. His father and brother were murdered in St. Louis so he found himself at loose ends, so he started westward to fulfill his dream. He starts out as a callow youth but by the time he reaches the Wasatch in Utah he has matured immeasurably. It turns out that the Wasatch is very beautiful. At the time beaver plews were bringing $1.25 a pound at the rendezvous, and at a number of newly established trading posts, or in St. Louis. So if a man was smart and diligent he could make a fortune trapping beaver. Jax intended to make a fortune.

#Yuhaaviatam - The Original Mountain Men!
Tumblr media
For some 2,000 years, the Yuhaaviatam thrived in the Valley as a self-sustaining community. The Big Bear valley was home to the indigenous Yuhaaviatam (a clan of the Serranos). These natives inhabited what they called Yuhaaviat meant 'Pine Place'. The name 'Serrano' or 'mountaineers' was given to the natives by Spanish explorers. The development and expansion of the California Mission System marked the first contacts and initial removal of the Serrano from their ancestral land.

House of Hoia: by Syker Fotograf - Own work, GPL, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=6611320 *The county of Hoia\Hoya is now in Lower Saxony in Germany. The castle of Hoia had seen disputes at least from thirteenth century while noble families in the region as well as church authorities were constantly in a tassel to acquire power over the county. Count Henry acquired it in the beginning of fourteenth century. The story is probably about his descendant Count John V and his son Count Jobst of fifteenth century. By the time Count John V died, his sons were still under-aged and hence, unable to rule the county. Later, Mainly due to Count Jobst’s effort, little detached branches of the family were reunited to hold the power over the territory. Like every other legend, we cannot determine the truth behind the story; what it tells us is that the unity of the ruling family was matter of discourse among people of the region.     #folktale #hoya #lowersaxony #germany #german #feudalism #nobility #countskustoms #dwarves #mountainmen #familylove #familyhistory #sagen #grimms Read it here: https://kathamukh.wordpress.com/2021/10/16/the-story-of-a-count-from-hoia/?preview=true https://www.instagram.com/p/CeNfeojrb02/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
