i fucking figured it out. the differences between bard colleges and wizard schools is literacy.

if you were a common civilian or peasent, you didnt read or write. those in ellitist societies would ve the only people who could read/ write and religious factions might choose to keep the masses incapable of interpreting their precious scripts.

but that didnt mean people were dumb. stories, history, skills, tradition, and even culture. these types of information were still heavily documented and preserved but through the art of oral storytelling and narrative. song would allow one to encode memory better than simple recounting and it is indeed an artform. bard would be considered what we see scholars are today and might even be respected people in society, especially small communities for their work.

the reason it takes wizards so damn long to even advance to level one.... is that they needed to learn to read. and not just read but to also write whole languages. d&d likely takes place in societies that are very rarely dependant on people to have actual literacy when bards already get the job done and u dont need to read motzard to live a decent quality life.
