tagged by @wilsonthemoose for spn season tier list challenge! this was very fun and i spent way too long on it lol here's my justification:
legendary fave: i'm a kripke era girl. as if it's my fault. not ranked in any particular order, equally love 1-5 (but esp 2) this is just objectively good television
really good: by "really good" i mean i love the stupid motw eps here but the season arc is just ok. 11 would be higher if they weren't so fucking weird about born-sexy-yesterday amara, 6/7 would be lower if i had any self respect (i don't) sorry i love a dumb motw ep! sorry i love a spray tan and a dick joke!
decent: 8 would be really good if not for the amelia of it all, just so ooc for sam i can't take it. sam's tarzan hair and the gay cajun vampire sidepiece almost make up for it. 12 is objectively bad on paper but i'm feral for mary winchester and the bmol are camp and terrible and STUPID and i love to dunk on them. the kelly kline of it all...i'm not sorry that republican fucking died. also mark pellegrino as lucifer again...pass. rick springfield as lucifer? SMASH
barely tolerable: s10 commits the cardinal sin of being boring. it's boring. i'm bored. handful of cool motw episodes and sexy conceits (deanmon) but they have the least amount of fun possible with it.
unwatchable: there is not a single episode of s9 i care about. skip.
it's complicated: i refrained from ranking 13-15 bc i'm rewatching rn and hoping my opinion will change bc if i had to rank them rn it would be...not good. scoobynatural save us all
no pressure tags: @spiritmunie @spnyuri @evermqres @not-roman-and-not-a-god

I was tagged by @according2thelore to complete a supernatural seasons tier list! thank you for the tag :D
my (subjective and depends on my mood) ranking:
I know others will disagree with me on this but I think season 3-5 are better than seasons 1-2 ^^;
I like shows with a strong plot arc to connect across the MotW format, and season 3-5 have major plot elements in a way that s1 just... doesn't? in general I think s1 is still figuring out its plot pacing, even if it has a special place in my heart. i generally only rewatch a handful of eps unless i'm doing a full rewatch so? season 2 is exceptional but i don't know, the show only hits as hard as it does for me in the more plot-connected episodes (except playthings. maybe playthings alone justifies it being in the s-tier. hmm...)
season 9, contentious and could probably knock down a tier depending on my mood because i have some beef with the retconning and other decisions made but. but sam got double-possessed. i am weak to that, okay? it was disturbing and sexy and the entire fucked up gaslighting plot was absolutely horrible in a very fun way that i ate up like candy.
s11 could maybe go up a tier for me because absolute married bros, but to be completely honest, i didn't like amara. like at all. that plot fell completely flat for me.
i don't think i need to explain s6, 7, 13, 14, or 15's placement here. jack is a redeeming factor, to my surprise, but overall at this point i'm just watching for the brother scenes and tuning out almost everything else.
it's complicated:
s12, fascinating concepts poorly executed. there's a secret better s12 laying underneath the actual s12 we got, if we scrape the surface off the existing s12 and just keep its bones. i live for the potential s12 had and all the incredible things it could have done and been if andrew dabb was more of a proper sicko.
s8? the first half, especially the first few eps, are completely unwatchable. the trials arc is incredible. it's complicated.

Oh there's another one of these @iprefertheterminsane tagged me to list 8 shows to get to know me
Heroes - This was the first fandom I was super active in! Heroes was smart, sleek, sexy, the characters were compelling and the concept was really cool, it launched Zachary Quinto's career, and if you pretend there was never more than one season it still holds up AMAZING.
Star Trek TOS - There's not a ton of shows where rampant optimism and hope are the core values of the program, but Star Trek is the OG for that, and that's why it still resonates so strongly with so many people. I remember watching this with my dad as a child.
The X-Files - In a similar vein, I remember watching this with my mom. When I was young I didn't know if I wanted to BE Dana Scully or if I wanted to date her (the answer actually WAS both). X-Files did monster of the week episodes RIGHT. Squeeze and Tooms are still some of the best motw eps from any show ever made. The mythos arcs almost always kept me on the edge of my seat, and when they made a character for you to hate, you HATED that character. No way to poor little meow meow the Cigarette Smoking Man.
Supernatural - Look. We were all there. or a lot of us were. In the trenches. SPN Started out SUPER super good. The Destiel years...immaculate. I watched intermittently after season 5, but I took it to heart when the writers said 5 was where it was meant to end. And they were right! It was a satisfying ending. It wasn't a HAPPY one. But it was satisfying.
Sense8 - This show had EVERYTHING. Multisexual polycule. Martial arts. Trans power. Psychic links. Empathy. Big orgy scene. It was SO good and so smart and that it was cancelled is STILL gut-wrenching.
NBC Hannibal - Heather can have a lil cannibalism as a treat
The Sandman - I mean, obviously my current obsession. I read a good amount of the comics when I was in high school and thought of them as appropriately dark and edgy and goth for me at the time, but the tv show really has brought it all slamming back home again, and I'm much more able to appreciate more nuanced themes like depression and personhood and grief now.
House MD - Combines several things I'm fascinated by: medical procedurals, Sherlock Holmes AUs, weird diseases, and Hugh Laurie. Shows like House are what I tend to gravitate back to when I want to watch something that I KNOW I don't need to think too hard about, but I want to see cool medical or forensic stuff. Bones and Criminal Minds also fill this itch, but House has a special place because, y'know, Hugh Laurie.
I am tired n nauseous so tag to ANYONE who sees this and wants to, I would love to know what you watch and if you'd recommend it <3

xf rewatch: squeeze and conduit
(As if this wasn't already apparent, I'll warn you that any off-the-cuff posts I manage to spew out as I rewatch are going to be rambly, unorganized and rudderless. I am tagging all of these "xf rewatch rambling." And I will be kind to us all and put in a cut.)
Eps 3 and 4, and we're still building some real foundational XF DNA here. Squeeze of course is our first MOTW and it's all nicely laid out for us: Colton and the jackass squad are all like, hurrrr it's ol spooky mulder he thinks a flying saucer did the murders, and even Scully is like, so whaddya think, these are the stretchy fingerprints of ALIENS? And it gives him a great opportunity to say, please Scully, I have range, we don't ONLY do UFO episodes cases on this show in this basement, sometimes we might have a "week" where we are investigating a "monster"! That will keep us busy!
It's also really interesting to see Mulder interact with the rest of the federal law enforcement universe for the first time, and how he plays into it in a smartass way, but how it really is relentless (with Colton in particular like physically blocking him from the crime scene even before he calls off the stakeout). Mulder doesn't get really mad about it until it gets to the point where he knows they've let a killer go and no one will listen to him about that. He's just such a fundamentally Good man, and it's a lovely thing to once again see through Scully's eyes how he is not the unreasonable one here, that despite his willingness to connect the dots to make a picture that is Beyond the Realm of Science, he IS, in fact, connecting dots, he's not just making shit up, and none of these dudes making fun of him are actually listening to him. I am loving watching how they draw his character in these early days.
Then with Conduit we're back into UFO stuff and it's our first Gordon/Gansa ep. This is the first episode I don't know like the back of my hand, although I remember it pretty well (and I don't know Squeeze AS well as Pilot and DT). It is quite solid, and MUCH more based on Carl Sagan's Contact than I remembered. As I rambled to a friend earlier today and will now do here again probably even less coherently, this whole thing was great for me until it falls apart at the end with the pieces of paper forming the portrait of Ruby. Despite this being a nifty reveal, the portrait is just SO GOOFY!!, and it is just a step too far for me. The aliens are sending numbers through the TV to Ruby's little brother — sure. And he's compelled to write them down and they turn out to be, in binary, the aliens repeating back to the humans what they've heard in transmissions from Earth, in what is assumed to be a way of reaching out or saying hello (this is what happens in Contact). I love all that, it's very spooky, it's a fun side-swerve when M&S get interrogated by the NSA because Kevin was accidentally transcribing top-secret military info, and it is undeniably a great moment when Scully goes upstairs and looks down and has the realization that it's a picture of Ruby. But... how can the 1s and 0s be BOTH encrypted satellite transmissions AND the precise sequence that makes a physical picture of Ruby's face? Also, is it like, a school portrait? Why is she smiling so hard? Did the aliens tell her to smile and snap a photo of her on the spaceship? Are they reading Kevin's mind and that's how he pictures her, with a giant cheeseball grin? It just kind of falls apart for me and it is silly enough that it breaks the momentum of the episode.
On the other hand, I get that they wanted to make it unequivocal that the aliens were communicating to Kevin about Ruby specifically — and to make that explicit tie between this situation and Mulder's memories, as expressed in the hypnosis in the (very emotional) last scene, about Samantha's abduction: the voice saying that she's ok and she'll be returned to him. This is a touching consistency that I never really picked up on before, that it is the aliens' MO when abducting a kid to make an effort to let a nearby loved one know that they don't have to worry. So working instructions for how to arrange the papers on the living room floor into their tv transmissions in order to make a giant Sears portrait of Ruby is another way of delivering this ultimately benevolent, hopeful message, I guess.
You couldn't keep it this way indefinitely, but I really do feel wistful about these early days when there was such a sense of wonder with the possibility of aliens, and so much unknown, before it all got bogged down in super soldiers and magnetite and consortiums and viruses and black oil and impregnating people with science against their will. You can FEEL Mulder's agitation and urgency in wanting to get Ruby's story and his agony at being blocked from it, and yet also understand Darlene's refusal to let this crazy-sounding stuff that has branded her a kook her whole life define her daughter's life as well. Just good stuff.
I will note though that there have been 4 episodes here so far, 3 of them dealing with UFOs, and in all 3 of those they have done the thing where you think you're seeing UFO lights and then it turns out to be a vehicle Very Much Of This Earth. I think you could give that one a rest for a little while, show.
Let's get real, this is all prelude to Jersey Devil, up next. Yeah baby.

okay i have no efficient way to respond to your tags on my conduit post but you lit rally read my mind. i just finished rewatching the first five eps and i had the EXACT SAME thoughts. the set up of mulder and scully's relationship + intro of alien mythology in the pilot. intro of government distrust in deep throat. a paranormal motw in squeeze. mulder's tragic backstory unlocked in conduit. cryptid motw in jersey devil. like!!!! you are so right. those first five episodes go SO hard and they do an amazing job of setting the tone for the entire series. please keep using the tags to talk about your humble opinions, i love reading them :D
yes yes yes!!! great minds thinkin alike or whatever!! like they are so cohesive and set the tone so well altogether but are also such good standalone episodes, deep throat probably being my favorite in the whole series. like name a better first 5 episodes of a show!! i will keep rambling in the tags as long as you keep making gorg photosets, i love them so much (♥‿♥ ✿)
#asks#publicly saying deep throat is my favorite makes me feel like i'm betraying all the other episodes that i refer to as my favorite lol

Predictions: A Pre-Review (TXF S8)
Oh-kay, now that I've finished Je Souhaite (and finally found where the thumbnail from S07E01 came from!), we're up for the crossover into S8, and therefore the pre-review. Ignore the fact that there have been several weeks (more than a month?) between Je Souhaite and this...I know that this is going to be hard ;-;
Thoughts going in are that this season will be angsty, and I believe that there are some more characters added, also that Skinner becomes a regular. Maybe a new credits sequence? Hopefully not a revamped theme, please. What fun awaits me? Let's go ahead and guess...
S07E22 'Requiem' - Revisiting their first case?! Hell yeah! However. It seems to come up a lot in AO3 tags, so. Potential for the Sad. 6/10
S08E01 'Within' - I recognise this guy from GIFs. On another note, WHY ARE WE MANHUNTING FOR MULDER. FIND MY BOY PLEASE. NOW. I'm scared for this. 7/10
S08E02 'Without' - That thumbnail hello??? I think we found him, get him to a hospital??? I don't think his arm should be that shape. I'm even MORE scared for this, but staying cautious. 7/10
S08E03 'Patience' - NEW PARTNER??? And it's matey from E01? What in the hell is going on here. Where is my boy. Murderous bat-like creature I can get behind though. 7/10
S08E04 'Roadrunners' - A Scully solo ep, could be fun. However, getting in over her head sounds less so. It probably can't beat Chinga. 6/10
S08E05 'Invocation' - Weirdly non-aged boy. Sounds like a standard MOTW, with a side of Scully and matey arguing. What does invocing something have to do with anything. 6/10
S08E06 'Redrum' - I have a fic idea with a very similar title! The episode sounds nothing like it though, pretty run-of-the-mill MOTW. Could be fun but I'll be cautions. 6/10
S08E07 'Via Negativa' - Skinner is serving someone a Look in the thumbnail, so this could be a fun little ep. Either that, or I will be giving the series a similar look by the end. 6/10
S08E08 'Surekill' - Oh, he would need x-ray vision? He probably has it then, we are in the paranormal show after all. Apologies for the consistency, but anyway. 6/10
S08E09 'Salvage' - Man Of Steel! This ep kept coming up when I was trying to see if that song actually appeared int he show. Something about the Gulf War? Could be good, actually. 7/10
S08E10 'Badlaa' - Oh dear, this looks as though it could be another Cultural Episode(TM). If we get through it without any cringing, I will let it above half way. 5/10
S08E11 'The Gift' - I don't even want to know what is going on in this thumbnail. Sweaty man lying in the dirt. Also MULDER IS STILL DISAPPEARED??? >:( Could have my boy content though. 6/10
S08E12 'Medusa' - A real medusa? In the Boston subway? Cool. Probably not for the victims, though. Also, I don't think she stripped flesh, more went in for turning it to stone. I'm not convinced of this one. 5/10
S08E13 'Per Manum' - Oh that's a name I know from AO3 tags, so something's definitely up. Thumbnail has Scully in white holding her stomach and the summary mentions pregnancy and there's a warning for 'scenes of surgery' so. This may be a f*cked up one. 5/10
S08E14 'This Is Not Happening' - From the thumbnail of a dead-looking Mulder, I am in full agreement, this is NOT happening and my boy is alright. Please. PLEASE. The angst potential though... 7/10
S08E15 'Deadalive' - Another known offender from AO3 tags, I think I know what happens in this one due to Spoilers, but basically WAAAH. BIG CRYING. ANGST AND REUNION AND WAAAH. 8/10
S08E16 'Three Words' - And we're back to MOTW! With Mulder in the thumbnail with Doggett?, so he's all good! This is a rollercoaster. Please just let them all be happy. 7/10
S08E17 'Empedocles' - So many hits in this summary. Who is Reyes? Doggett had a son? Now he's dead? Also Mulder is here? Where is Scully? I am confused but intrigued. 7/10
S08E18 'Vienen' - Return of black oil!!! Man, I hated this stuff to start with, but we've got a Mulder thumbnail and there's h/c potential. I have medium hopes. 7/10
S08E19 'Alone' - Doggett and his partner have disappeared now! Full house! Everyone involved with the X Files has gone missing in one way or another. I hope we get some echoes of early-season Mulder and Scully. 7/10
S08E20 'Essence' - BILLY MILES??? AGAIN??? I really thought he would be a one-time character...though they did apparently investigate his case again in the previous season finale, so...huh. 7/10
S08E21 'Existence' - Oh, oh. THIS thumbnail. With the baby and the kiss (I've seen GIFs) and...I have heard of this ep and suspect that it may not be as cutsey as all that. Probably one shining scene. However. He has the benefit of the doubt. How will they make it run into S9 though...? 7/10
#txf season pre-review#yall is this really a good idea or am i being dumb#we left my fave seasons behind long ago...ive still got them though right? i can do back whenever i want and pretend thsi never happened...#i am basically treating it like a revival 0.5 though because apparently everything goes wack#wish me luck ;-;#x files#the x files#the scientist speaks

Episode 87: 5.05 Fallen Idols
It’s a short one this week, friendos! The podcast, yes, but also the episode itself. It runs so short they included a SOON segment at the end of the ep promoting the next three episodes!
And for one filled with painful irony-- a god cosplaying as beloved icons in order to devour fans of said icons-- and a good number of classic lines (four score and seven years ago, I had a funny hat!), the episode overall is pretty straightforward.
Plus, as a nice break, Sam and Dean actually communicate well! They make a little bit of personal progress! Hooray for MotW episodes!
LINKS!

Also, if you know of the spn script hunt group, we’re currently raising money for the Trevor Project (and giving away autographed scripts!). So if you’ve clicked through the links in any of my episodes to read various scripts, casting sides, and other items in our collection, maybe consider making a donation. Podcasts in review 2022
It was decidedly NOT a good year. Hence all the actual play podcasts.
Actual Play :/
These Flimsy Rituals - Divine cycle but fantasy. No seriously, they have Divines, the Rapid Evening, the Crystal Palace - and I'm 90% sure it's a coincidence. Severe lack of Keith J Carberry (or equivalent) makes it hard to listen to. Play their own system, Blades and a variety of other small games to expand the story.
Eidolon Playtest - Jojo stands in a tabletop world with moves such as "reveal your masterplan". Tarot card pulls are much cooler than dice. Their mini seasons (Giants? in particular) are a great place to start. The cast is mostly trans women who both loved and disliked Jojo (and Persona) enough to unionize and make something of their own - one of the characters in the current season is legit Naoto but good (trans). Play different versions of their own game.
Spout lore - somehow they play Dungeon World nigh gmless. The players supply the world, its geography, fauna, even reasons for this particular group of bad guys to kidnap them. Even if I consider the results of their world building inferior to some others, there sure take a ton of joy in creation (and that's beautiful). Also a TON of dick and fart jokes and the weirdest cases of no(?) homo from the cast. ALSO they do a goof (dndads style) by stealing from a more popular podcast thinking it was just a thing (princept as a gender neutral term for "ruler of a principality". look it up. there is only a urban dictionary entry from after partizan has started. a song, a firm and FaTT Wiki entry). Play Dungeon World and Blades (in bonus Patreon content).
Naddpod (Eldermourne) - there had to be a point where I put my foot down. No more dnd podcasts from now on.
The Unexplored Places (Deliverance, OH; Tango Sector) - Deliverance, OH is a cool name for a place to see monsters every week. Tango Sector is a cool name for a place to be scum and villains in, but the sum of its parts is less than. Catfishes: the Rock opera is a masterpiece. Play MotW, Scum and Villainy, Masks, Fiasco, smaller games.
Qomrades - a friend group that plays not dnd decided to record themselves on game night. Play whatever.
Tales Yet Told (Season 1) - discovered through their post in the FaTT tag here (good hustle). Cute (and sufficiently creepy) little story about siblings lost in the woods. Not in a rush to catch up, but I'm looking forward to. Play Babes in the Woods.
Rusty Quill Gaming - absolutely atrocious beginning (eps 2-8 are the same fucking combat encounter). The ending felt out of nowhere: was the fandom as analytical organ required to understand it? Grizzop voice makes me so happy it's illegal. Play Pathfinder (ugh) and a variety of games as bonus content.
Audio Drama :)
Wizards Seeking Wizards - it can be difficult to fill your quadrants when you are a wizard - but you should try anyway. Wacky wizards go on weird love, hate and friend dates. Product of voice actors in quarantine.
The Ballad of Anne and Mary - have you ever wanted to hear cool historical female pirates to sing about their life? Now is your chance. Product of actors in quarantine.
The Doctor Is Dead - ahhh!!!! Cool weird queer (thematically and otherwise) musical. Complete with astonishing songwriting and music. Favorite thing I've encountered all year.
Out of Place - alternate dimension puzzles are more fun when they are based in history (season 1), and not in sci Fi the author has read (season 2).
Beneath our Feet - doctor but not cool.
Mirrors - normally I am very easily impressed by both women and ghosts.
The Tides - I really wanted it to be In Other Waters. Hard to do so without visuals or scientific basis.
Woe.Begone - I won't be listening to another Homestuck while also being personally victimized by the writer (/j but I refuse to elaborate).
Malevolent - possession narratives are sooo fun I will keep listening to another Homestuck 💛
Arden - when fem!Hamlet goes to the nunnery. Oh my god. Oh shit. O fuck. So unfortunate you have to get through the first season to reach the second.
Tech won't save us - host's name is Paris Marx, which makes everything else self explanatory. Your leftie tech podcast.
Various unnamed philosophy podcasts - not good enough to mention. None of them compare to the One (GSSB) which isn't even one primarily.

God you guys, I have infected so many people with winchester derangement syndrome over the years. I LITERALLY got someone LAST WEEK who I am p sure has now started watching the show.
Saw @roguepayasa talking about being an ex ex spn fan and it really is a once in a lifetime kinda thing, huh? This show is truly unparalleled media experience. I wish I could go around telling people about it with pride but no, I’ll have to give them a homophobia and suicide tw first :(

Supernatural Season 7 Review/Thoughts
honestly it seems crazy that we're here but we are!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Notes: so i'm reading dta and i'm almost done with MOTW, if anyone knows of an audio format of the rest of it, please send it my way, i would greatly appreciate that!! (also I'm recovering from my second vaccine shot, it hit me pretty hard, so if this is incomprehensible i'm sorry!!)
Things I liked:
godstiel. very interesting, kind of wish we saw him more
jody!!!
oh my god the leviathans,,, they really are a different kind of spn villain
krissy!! Dean really has a lot of child figures huh
GARTH <3 I love him so much
charlie and kevin's introductions as well were really really nice, especially charlie being a woman and gay and kevin not being a white guy
the way bobby took his abusive dad experiences and then completely rejected that and was an amazing dad figure to sam and dean was really nice
Things I didn't like:
damn they really tried to kill cas off so many times didn't they
no. becky. that whole ep with marrying sam just felt really r*pey to me
why why why would you give Dean a biological child, kill her, and then never mention it again?
Other thoughts:
repo man made absolutely 0 sense to me
7x02 Hello, Cruel World was sort of really hard for me to watch and every time I think about it I have to sit down to process it lol
oh MY god the way amy is introduced and approached was just,, very interesting
sera gamble's back,, and i actually kind of like her episodes
Favorite Episodes: Party on, Garth, The Girl With the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo, Reading is Fundamental
Least Favorite Episodes: Season Seven, Time for a Wedding, Out with the Old, Of Grave Importance
Episodes I cried at: Hello, Cruel World, Death's Door, Plucky Pennywhistle's, The Born-Again Identity, Survival of the Fittest
ok i’ve only seen seasons 1-11 but i’m doing this post so here’s my thoughts, fellow spn thotties please sound off with yours in the comments or make ur own post and tag me cuz i wanna know. here we go
best season: season 5. daddy issues. the finale. the raw energy of destiel. need i say more
most coherent: i kinda wanna say season 4?? most clear goal, most clear character arcs, everything everyone did actually Made Sense for once
most memorable: season 7. why did they do that besties
highest number of solid episodes: either have to say 2, 3, or 5. 3 loses points bc there’s only like 16 eps total. 2 is classic MOTW hit after hit. however, 5 is by far the sexiest if you’re into destiel and the death/apocalypse storyline which I Am ❤️
best overarching plot: sorry not to be that guy but it has to be 4-5. like. cancel me for being a shitty little bitch for kripke but ........... just can’t beat it :)
favorite: 5 again. hiiiiiiiiiii
think about the most: whatever season they killed kevin. that’s when i realized once and for all that the spn writers were cunts
honorable mention not in the original post but i feel like also matters is like... your favorite standalone episode that everyone doesn’t universally agree on as Good Spn (u can’t choose lucifer rising for example): for me it’s 11.04 “baby” from the perspective of the car. or s6 the man who would be king when it’s all from cas’s perspective. i love all the heaven stuff before it got weird and conversion therapy-esque
i didnt want to be overly negative in the tags of that post so OH my god i hate those fucking conversations at the beginning of eps so much. just start the fucking episode. i would have watched every late season so much faster if every episode didn't begin with some sheepish half hearted explanation for why they're doing a motw. JUST DO THE EPISODE! if you didnt have that conversation nobody would have noticed that you're not doing a plot related episode and pointing it out just brings down the quality of the entire thing . god i hate it.
