Fine Motor Skill Development
Fine motor skills play a vital role in child development. It's crucial to actively engage your child in various home activities to foster their growth. Experts note a decline in the motor skills of today's children compared to previous generations, possibly attributed to changes in early upbringing practices. Additionally, some children may face delays in the development of their fine motor skills, emphasizing the importance of having strategies to enhance these skills.

a great way to combat genAI in the future would be educating kids (and teens and college students and all ppl) on art way more.
#i had art classes growing up but i know a lot of ppl didn't and even less kids get art classes nowadays#we need all kinds of art classes too! music and history and painting and woodshop and drawing and life drawing#i think art history is especially important bc it connects us to our past and shows why art is so important#and all kinds of art classes help kids develop different important skills#like fine motor skills and critical thinking and making choices and noticing details and how to really SEE things rather than just looking#and a lot of art skills like woodworking and ceramics and sewing are all very practical basic adult skills that we should all get to learn#there's reasons arts and crafts and other skill based electives are the first to go and its not just bc they're undervalued#its cause a population that feels capable and confident and skilled and knows how to think critically#is harder to make work shitty jobs for shitty pay#harder to control!#same reason they're banning so many books and trying to make education worse#damn maybe i should learn how to teach better#im already planning to at least try doing a workshop for adults but maybe if i end up liking that#i could work towards being able to teach kids#i feel like teaching kids would be harder cause idk what concepts they do or dont know at whatever age they are#id have to do research and maybe talk to someone who has experience teaching art to kids#but even a simple art class would be beneficial i think#like going outside to draw things in nature maybe#or portrait drawing#or a class on how to make comics or animate on paper to impress their friends lol#i would've loved that!#id have to do that with the help of another teacher maybe#idk#vague future plans#anyway the reason education would help combat ai is cause ppl would learn abt what goes onto making art#all the choices and skills and thought#and they'd be able to more easily see the difference btwn real art and ai images and understand why making art is important

I was thinking of Mia and the complicated relationship she had with water after the Baker Incident like Mia would not be able to stand the smell or feel of water covering her like in a bath. of course not. she drowned in it, she was locked in a cell next to a stagnant pool with a body in it for a month plus many more reasons
it would take her family to get her this close. Rose being able to sit up by herself was a huge deal breaker holding onto ethan another
#resident evil#ethan winters#mia winters#rosemary winters#in a happier albeit random note I can see them both doing tummy time with rose#Time on their tummy can be a really fun activity for your baby and is also a good way to bond. It helps your baby to develop their core str#as well as their motor skills which will help them explore the world around them.#resident evil village#the winters saga

Sorry if you've already said but can I ask what age you started drawing? I'm in my twenties wondering what sort of skill level I can acquire if I haven't been applying myself very much before this point
i have been drawing for as long as i can remember. i started wanting to actively improve my technical skills when i was a teenager; i think i started learning how to actually actively improve my technical skills (on purpose instead of by accident, lol!) in my 20s.
(also -- as wordy as it may be, you'll notice i'm really particular about saying "technical skill" over and over! this is because it is only one factor of what drawing is, but a lot of times when ppl talk about being "good at" drawing, tech skill is what they really mean. when i say technical skill, i'm usually referring to draftsmanship, the ability to draw things not just accurately/realistically, but as they appear in your head; your hand doing what your mind tells you to, your ability to meet your own intentions/expectations for a piece, however it makes sense to conceptualize it. it is NOT the most important part of drawing, not by a long shot, but realistically it's often the sticking point for people who are learning + it can be one of the big struggles in keeping morale up.)
these may seem like finicky distinctions to make, but to me they make sense! bc the benefit we may have starting as adults is a better grasp of how to CONSCIOUSLY study and improve on specific areas of a skill, vs the passive improvement that will generally happen from pure directionless repetition. i feel that i've had jumps in my technical skill level over the course of a year or two as an adult that are bigger than my improvement through all of middle + high school, for example -- and i bring this up bc if what ur concerned about is technical skill, that is not purely 100% about time invested, and starting later than some does not mean you're at some kind of massive insurmountable disadvantage.
in that specific example, the difference as an adult was going into it with intentional curiosity and a drive to specifically improve, vs middle + high school was six years of me happily drawing the same 4-5 characters floating from the waist up in perpetuity. were those years wasted bc i wasn't drilling myself and doing studies? fuck no! but my progress was different, bc i was focused on other, equally important parts of learning to draw. (like discovering + honing my own tastes, consuming a lot of media that inspired me, and having fun!!!!)
SO, anyway, my personal perspective on the skill level u can attain if u start now: the same as anyone else!! and i don't think i'm being like, sunny or unreasonably optimistic in saying so. i think keeping ur chin up and being patient w urself as u learn to draw is generally way harder than actually drawing, for literally everyone. u have to make a lot of dogshit drawings to eventually make good ones, and that is the part that's actually really really hard. but u can make decisions about how and where to apply the time u invest that may show u visible progress in ways you'll find surprising! (pls balance that time with shit that's just fun, too.)
in case it's helpful, i'll leave u with a different very wordy multi-para response where i talk about where to start if you'd like to learn to draw with no/little prior experience: here! it's def not comprehensive and is totally colored by my own opinions/perspective on art, and specifically on illustration/comics, but i hope it might be a starting point :)
#resources#tutorials#also: i didn't want to cram this into the main text bc it's already long and this isn't as important#but all of those years of 'jump start' that u may feel other artists have on u from starting as kids? for most of them ppl drawing as kids-#-were like. also just battling their own motor development. like yes i got way better at drawing thru childhood... bc i was learning to -#-use my hands. period. and happened to be drawing while doing so. like we also all learned to write. u know?#obviously it's not as if all the motor skills u have as an adult will AUTOMATICALLY transfer neatly over to drawing#it will have to be adapted. but it wasn't like u were learning Nothing that applies to art skills all this time

I keep seeing this post going around so I have to ask. Are kids really not going to learn writing principals because of ai? Or have students always been cheating on essays and finding ways to not do english assignments? Before chat gpt the cutting edge of cheating was finding essays written in foreign languages and then translating them back to english. Before that it was paying another kid to write one for you. Kids have always been able to cheat, it hasn't caused the downfall of western society yet and I don't think it will any time soon.
#the art bit is different imo just because the type of art taught to kids is less to make them professional artists#and more for like fine motor skills development/creative thinking/fun

Its always fun to laugh at kids not knowing how to use older technology like a casette or vhs player, or even CD, and then be concerned about their lack of knowledge about these things but the problem can be very easily resolved. Just... show it to them. Literally all youd have to do is play a cd in the living room at the age of 4. Let them pick out what music to play. And keep that up from time to time.
Its a dumb example but i just saw a bunch of 13 year olds stare at a cd as if they were in the caves handling fore given by prometheus himself. And theres so many more examples out there, of subject matters that are probably much more concerning.
I swear to god parents expect their children to just learn shit by themself, forgetting it is their duty to educate and nurture.
#yeah they go to school#but the parent has to help in their kids fucking development#but whatever the babys got an ipad#its fine#good luck with those fine motor skills

how to write the physicality of children
(this is part of my series, how to write children in fanfiction! feel free to check it out if you want more info like this!)
now, with the physicality of children, we will essentially be describing how children move, and how the physical abilities of children can change overtime. every single child in the entire world is different, but this is a general guide for how to make your child characters look and move more accurately in your writing!
how children move
now, the physical development of children can largely depend on a lot of factors, but this guide is general, so the information i will be using is based on approximated averages. there are a lot of resources out there that can help guide you if you are writing a child character with any sort of disability, or something else that would affect their physical development!
we're going to be looking at motor skills. a motor skill is essentially just a function that allows your body to move and perform tasks throughout your life. motor skills start developing at birth, and they get more and more advanced as you age. there are two types of motor skills: gross motor skills and fine motor skills.
gross motor skills are the skills that use the larger, more prominent muscles in the body. they are typically skills that require strength, coordination, or reaction time. these skills tend to develop before fine motor skills. examples of gross motor skills include sitting up, jumping, and bending at the waist to pick up an object.
fine motor skills are the skills that use smaller muscles in the body. they are typically skills that require precision or high degrees of control. these skills tend to develop after gross motor skills. examples of fine motor skills include unbuttoning clothes, hand-eye coordination, and drinking from a straw.
most children develop most of the motor skills they'll need for life by the time they're around five years old. many children still struggle with certain things after this age, but usually, the majority of things they need to know how to do are at least somewhat mastered.
in the sources, i will link a very detailed guide to what motor skills are developed at what age, but here are some of the biggest ones:
-gross motor skills: children tend to start crawling, standing, and walking with support when they are around 6-12 months old. they tend to start walking without support when they are around 12-18 months old. around 18-24 months, they start to learn how to run and jump, though these skills are still fairly underdeveloped. once they hit around 2-3 years old, running, walking, and jumping are usually considered to be fully mastered, even if they are a bit clumsy.
-fine motor skills: from birth to around 6 months old, children start to learn how to hold objects. from 6-12 months old, they learn how to do more advanced holding skills such as transferring objects from one location to another. from a year old on, their skills with their hands rapidly increase, and they pick up on doing things such as scribbling (12-18 months), turning doorknobs/using zippers (18-24 months), holding scissors correctly/turning individual pages of a book (2-3 years). once they turn around 5 years old and they learn how to write their name and brush their teeth, and other basic things like that, they are considered to have mastered the basics of fine motor skills. also, around this time, they tend to develop a hand preference (right handed or left handed).
how children look/move physically
from birth to the age of 5, there are so many factors that contribute to growth that it is very difficult to determine milestones and averages. but here are some general attributes from 6-12 years old that could be written in to hint at a child's age:
-6-9 years old: growth rate slows, established hand preference, coordination is not fully developed, needs frequent rest (around 11 hours of sleep), can dress and undress completely, able to play ball, tag, and catch.
-9-12 years old: develops more adult-like proportions, may begin growth spurt, eats neatly, starts developing secondary sex characteristics, able to perform more specific motor skills such as running, gymnastics, baseball, swimming, writing, art, music, and crafts.
now, i don't have a lot to say specifically about looks, but here are some tips to writing a child's appearance!
not all children are very skinny. it is common for children to have very high metabolisms compared to adults, but due to genetics, medical complications, and situational circumstances, many children are overweight or obese as well, and many children are somewhere in between. consider writing a child that's on the chubbier side, because they definitely exist, and it is representation that is not written enough.
some children are unusually tall or unusually short. a lot of things contribute to this such as genetics, race, medical conditions, situational circumstances, or just plain chance.
as children grow older, they develop more and more control over their appearance. maybe play around with that! think about the age that you were able to choose your own clothes, or tell your guardians how you wanted your hair to look.
also, a lot of kids don't develop awareness about their appearances and how they look until they reach around 9 years old. as you're writing children younger than that, think about how you felt about your appearance. was it fairly neutral? did you even think about how you looked at all?
---
i hope you guys enjoyed this guide!! it's not quite as detailed as the speech impediment one, but i wanted to write this one in case people struggle with making the child's skills match their age accurately!

Idk I think if you're having a child "the aesthetic of the toys they play with" should not be a concern? "Oh this toy is SUCH an eyesore in my living room." Do you hear yourself talking? Just curious
#elias howls#in what WORLD would I ever care about the eyesore of my babies toys??? Toys. Playing. Two vital things to thier development and fine motor s#skills. also. like. someone's home being messy BECAUSE of baby toys??? quite honestly 1. not my place to judge a parent on that 2. THATS A G#IVEN WITH KIDS?????#i was friends with a few kids who had play rooms. I vaguely remember this. Those rooms were ALWAYS messy. Cuz its a playroom!!!!#commentating on a video I'm watching. Sorry I get so heated over the topic of (early) childhood

Baby Brains
The human body carries on developing after birth – but the rate of these changes is still in question for developmental biologists. Here scientists take magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of sleeping children’s cerebellums over the first two years of life, showing months 1–5 (top row) and regular intervals afterwards (bottom) from three different angles. While the young brain is constantly growing, it’s growing at a faster rate (warmer colours) during the first six months. The researchers investigated further, analysing the scans from 235 healthy children and looking at how 27 individual regions of their cerebellums change – finding, for example, that changes in specific ‘lobules’ corresponded with milestones in fine motor skills. This data could be used to pinpoint developmental windows for further study, or even to diagnose health issues or injuries during a toddler’s early life.

does it make anyone else absolutely crazy insane that like. you and every single person you talk to or interact with in the world is a product of being cared for. regardless of what happened later someone had to feed you and hold you and keep you warm and safe for you to even be wherever you are. regardless of who it was... someone cared enough to come to you when you cried and to pick you up and talk to you and put you down to sleep safely as a baby.... we're all products of care!!! we don't get anywhere alone!!!!
#i think i've maybe definitely said this before but i'm thinking about it again reading about this like absolutely insane abuse case#and thinking about how like 85% of your brain develops in the first five years of life and all the stuff we do on a technical level like#talking and motor skills and even things like. nodding or whatever. are all learned and formed in that foundational period#but so is like. our sense of communication and safety and the way we react to affection and humor#like. babies cry because they know someone will come if they do. but if no one responds they stop crying#yknow?#teddyposting
