2023 motogp le mans recap/review
it was a fuckin race wasnt it
marco bezzecchi won the 2023 le mans motogp with a 5-second gap to 2nd place jorge martin. it was not an accident that he led the championship for a hot minute, and it's not an accident that he's now only one point away from the top again. if you send him an invitation to lead at the front, he's just, gone. kid drives. yeah, the desmosedici gp22 is eminently drivable, but c'mon, he's schooling the two current spec pramac ducatis completing the podium behind him. if bez can improve and have better bad days from this point on, he's gonna be a challenge to pecco bagnaia's championship campaign that's not pecco bagnaia. well, i guess at least it's not pecco bagnaia that took out pecco bagnaia this time around
top gun maverick vinales is very scary. both in the sense that he's very quick and he makes iffy moves. having said that! i certainly do not have enough wheel knowledge to assign blame on this occasion. i'm not being an enlightened centrist here; i'm just really that stupid. it's certainly fucking horrid that mav slapped pecco who was sat on the ground, that's poor form (it's fucking funny that they were fucking made to shake hands right away and had to be ridden on the same bike into the paddock in cabe-cabean configuration). but, was it just impossible for mav to turn his bike back to make the chicane there? he was just sat up there in the middle of the road, after making the pass on bagnaia at the first part of the chicane. pecco turned first for the over under and was just met with a faceful of aprilia. i had a silly thought in the middle of the race, just the usual anlic brain momento, "'i actually like the aerodynamic devices because you can't ride as close to each other, therefore reducing the jeopardy of the sport, and reducing half-assed passing moves; you only pass when you've got a good plan and full confidence', says me, an idiot". well. what we've got is this perilous move. and various others. i know that i sang high praises for bezzecchi up top but he didn't pass marc marquez for second place as much as walked him towards the long lap track, letting jorge martin pass both of them for second. and then he passed jorge for second proper, and then the stewards told him to drop one place, so he gave the place back to martin and then passed him back again (on that penalty: i guess making another rider go off-track is slightly more severe than "just" contact racing like marc's pass on pecco in the sprint? is this the stewards being consistent at least this weekend? i don't know. i don't think the stewards know either). all the while the true victim in all this marc marquez stayed in fourth. it's a mess. it's pretty funny
i had a thought while watching marc's incredible defensive struggle against jorge martin for second place, having been able to pass him again. seeing how he just braked better into turn one compared to martin, offsetting the pace deficit of the honda against the ducati. seeing 2020 world champion joan mir and recent multiple race winner alex rins fall of their respective hondas unceremoniously in the teens places. how did quartararo pulled off his early 2022 challenge with that yamaha? how is marc marquez pulling off this with this honda? the answer is, well, he doesn't. he drove that honda on the edge, and then it just went from 100 to 0, and he too fell, granting local johann zarco the final podium place. it's frustrating. we always wonder about how world champions would fare on midfield equipment, having to "fight for positions" again. well, at least lewis hamilton is finishing races right now
juxtapose that 100 to 0 with jack miller's cinderella shoes crumbling underneath him in real time. i heard the world feed commentator wondering whether jack miller's on management mode after slowing down and getting overtaken by bez. rofl since when does jack miller know management. early in the race i joked to myself that with all the carnage, everyone's gonna take each other out and it's gonna be augusto fernandez charging towards a cooked miller for the win. hmh. miller's pace was entirely gone by like lap 13 out of 27. and then he literally fell off. i guess that's the point of jackass, isn't it: pain
brad binder got taken out of contention (well, "contention", he started from 10th) when alex marquez touched him and made him go wide in the lap 1 carnage. and then later on in the race binder had to pass a Very struggling miller, he made that ktm go sideways like it be doing, he utterly failed, went off track and had to take a long lap penalty. horrid day for factory ktm. at least brad got to Pass Some Fucking Bikes (™motorsport101 shout out) on the sprint yesterday
luca marini almost became a legend doing a marc marquez save with his elbow on the ground, and then alex marquez unfortunately just ran into him anyway. it's comical and horrifying seeing alex trying to baby crawl out of the racing line while also sliding along it at 80kph or something. and it was just a local yellow. my f1-watching heart was quite challenged. f1 we roll out the red flag if 3 pieces of gravel got on the track
a lot of attrition in this race, with only 13 bikes finishing. and moto2 champion augusto fernandez actually just kinda survived all of it, fended off aleix espargaro, and finished fourth, making me deliriously giddy. ha, you thought i was just joking about him a few paragraphs back. that gasgas red looked really good near the front. make it happen more often
