In a damning exchange, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked,

“Who is the administrator of DOGE?”

Leavitt responded,

“I’m not going to reveal the name of that person from this podium…”

A substantial percentage of the world’s population knows that Elon Musk is the administrator, dictator, ruler, king, emperor, and “Dear Leader” of DOGE. The fact that the White House press secretary was afraid to answer that simple question shows that Musk is toxic—and Trump's advisors know it.

Their fear should guide our political attacks: We must be laser-focused on the GOP’s biggest political liability—the heartless, clueless, dangerous billionaire named Elon Musk, who is ruining the lives of millions of Americans while mocking them by wielding a bejeweled chainsaw on the CPAC center stage.

Blame Musk and Trump—rightfully—for every bad thing that happens from this point forward, for every job lost, every mortgage in foreclosure, every rent payment missed, every medical bill unpaid or medical procedure foregone because of lack of resources or insurance, every campground closed, every pothole that pops a tire, every flight delayed, every case of food poisoning, every new case of measles and bird flu, every beach closed due to contamination, and every disaster in which aid is slow or denied or stolen to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.

Blame Musk and Trump until their culpability becomes accepted truth of such irrefutable force that it enters the lexicon alongside well-worn swear words and curses of ancient origin.

Later in the day, the White House identified someone as the “acting administrator” of DOGE—a person who seemed surprised by the announcement and who was on vacation in Mexico when the announcement was made. See CBS News, This is who the White House says is the DOGE acting administrator.

Part of what motivated Karoline Leavitt to dodge the question about who is in charge of DOGE is that at least one federal judge is chasing the answer to that question without success. As explained in Talking Points Memo, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly has been trying to get to the bottom of who runs DOGE after administration lawyers submitted a declaration suggesting that Musk has no authority to make any decision or direct any government employee. When you are embarrassed to utter the name of the co-president, you know the co-presidency scheme isn’t working—even though it has the salutary effect of giving Trump more time on the golf course and less time to destroy US foreign relations.

But it is worse than merely knowing that Musk has become toxic. At a moment when Speaker Mike Johnson is trying to garner the last two or three votes necessary to pass the GOP budget reconciliation bill, Musk is on the sidelines, cheering on GOP anarchists in the House with snarky, cryptic tweets. As The New Republic reports,

“If the Republican budget passes, the deficit gets worse, not better,” MAGA cheerleader Representative Thomas Massie wrote Monday on X. “That sounds bad,” Elon Musk replied, reinforcing the MAGA wing’s opposition to Johnson’s version of the budget, which notably does not include the deep cuts to crucial programs that have huge standard-of-living effects, such as Medicaid—and leaving the budget in a precarious, vote-lacking position.

A GOP representative later replied to Musk’s tweet, saying,

“I hope we’re not going to have this come to whatever is said on X to change months and months of substantive work to actually do this in a deficit-neutral way . . . .”

Welcome to our world, House Republicans. Yes, Musk will try to undo months of careful, painstaking work with a single ignorant, thoughtless tweet meant to be funny.

So, as Trump and Mike Johnson are trying to pass a reconciliation bill against steep odds, Co-President Musk is trying to defeat that same bill. That dynamic makes it clear that Musk is in the dominant position and Trump has assumed the “Putin-bootlicking Position” in his relationship with Co-President Musk.

[As I write on Tuesday evening in London, the fate of the reconciliation bill is uncertain. I will address it on Wednesday evening.]

But having a co-president gets even worse for Trump. In the good old days of Trump's first week of his second term, he didn’t have to answer for the incompetence and screw-ups of Musk’s careless and ignorant actions. Now, Trump is not only blamed for his own ineptitude but is also tagged with Musk’s mistakes—which are abundant.

Musk has bragged about “keeping receipts” of the alleged hundreds of billions of dollars his reckless cost-cutting and mass firings have achieved. He even created a website with a real-time counter that toted the alleged savings. But the “wall of receipts” was so filled with errors that it deleted the five largest line items of supposed savings. When people realize that the massive pain and suffering inflicted by Musk amounts to a rounding error in the federal budget, they will be even angrier than they are now.

As a sign of the rising resistance to Musk, more than 20 staffers have resigned from Musk’s “DOGE” Department, which previously existed under the name Department of Digital Services. See AP, Federal technology staffers resign rather than help Musk and DOGE.

Per AP,

More than 20 civil service employees resigned Tuesday from billionaire Trump adviser Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, saying they refused to use their technical expertise to “dismantle critical public services.” “We swore to serve the American people and uphold our oath to the Constitution across presidential administrations,” the 21 staffers wrote in a joint resignation letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press. “However, it has become clear that we can no longer honor those commitments.”

As bad as Trump is, deciding to compound his own criminality, incompetence, and narcissism with the incompetence, cruelty, and ignorance of Musk is a lose-lose proposition for Trump, Musk, and the GOP.

Trump administration continues to ignore court orders to unfreeze grants

Trump has violated Article I of the Constitution by claiming for himself the ability to withhold funds appropriated by Congress and by shuttering federal agencies established by acts of Congress. Several federal courts have ordered Trump to unfreeze the frozen funds, and Trump's administration lawyers have agreed to comply with the courts’ orders.

Or at least they have claimed they will comply with the court orders. At a hearing on Monday, a frustrated US District Judge, Amir H. Ali, tried repeatedly to force the Trump administration to state whether it had released previously frozen funds—as ordered by the court. Per AP, the following exchange occurred:

“I’m not sure why I can’t get a straight answer from you on this: Are you aware of an unfreezing of the disbursement of funds for those contracts and agreements that were frozen before Feb. 13,” the judge asked Indraneel Sur, the lawyer for the government. “Are you aware of steps taken to actually release those funds?”

“I’m not in a position to answer that,” Sur said.

Judge Ali ordered the funds unfrozen nearly two weeks ago. The fact that the administration lawyer cannot answer whether that has happened should be interpreted as “No. The funds have not been unfrozen—but I am afraid to admit that fact to you.”

Readers may be tired of hearing this mantra. Still, the fact that Trump has illegally impounded funds in violation of Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution and then refused to abide by a court order compelling him to unfreeze those funds is more than lawless. It is a wholesale overturning of the Constitution, which is a coup. Call it whatever you want, Trump has suspended the Constitution. That is a five-alarm fire.

Far away in the land of Sylvania, some woodland creatures have gathered to celebrate Pride. There’s a cross-dressing fox, a PVC-clad boar, a rabbit in full drag on a float. Rainbow flags and bunting abound. But just out of sight, perched above an ice-cream kiosk, are three sinister little figures in black face masks. They could be hedgehogs. They could be squirrels. One of them has a machine gun.

Isis in Sylvania was the work of the satirist Miriam Elia, a set of tableaux which was meant to be shown at the Passion for Freedom art exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London in 2015. The pieces were withdrawn after police said they might cause offence. That the gallery capitulated so easily would suggest that its self-declared “passion for freedom” was limited.

Elia’s display brilliantly lampooned our infantile response to the growing threat of Islamic terrorism, and it seems more relevant today than ever. After the police had sent emails to the gallery declaring that Isis in Sylvania was “not art” and that “all mentions of it should be removed from the promotional materials, social media etc”, Elia responded:

“The decision to censor shows that our establishment is more threatened by satire, clarity and truth than by young men willing to kill, rape and pillage in the name of Islam. Apparently my images were ‘potentially inflammatory’ to terrorists. This is the equivalent of saying an anti-Nazi cartoon in the late 1930s was offensive… to Nazis. Those who justify and protect barbaric totalitarianism, in whichever form, are on the fast track to becoming totalitarian themselves.”

The reaction of the police, of course, exemplified the very problem that Elia had been satirising in the first place.

It should be clear to everyone by now that kowtowing to the wishes of terrorists only encourages them. Last week Lindsay Hoyle, speaker of the House of Commons, was pressurised into overriding parliamentary convention because of an apparent risk to security. He spoke of “absolutely frightening” threats directed at MPs because of their reluctance to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. He also alluded to the murder of MP David Amess by an ISIS sympathiser. “I never want to go through a situation where I find a friend from any side has been murdered,” he said, “I also don’t want another attack on this House.” The word “Islamist” was not mentioned, as though not talking about the problem might make it disappear.

Hoyle is correct that the threat of violence is very real. Nobody would seek to downplay the murder of David Amess at his constituency surgery in Essex in 2021, or the beheading of schoolteacher Samuel Paty in Paris in 2020, or the massacre at the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in 2015. But our tendency to forget these atrocities, and move on as if nothing has happened, is chilling. Many of our politicians are too afraid to address the issues out of fear of being branded “islamophobic”, an absurd neologism often deployed to conflate anti-Muslim hatred with legitimate criticism of Islam.

How much reflection was there after the Manchester Arena bombing in May 2017 in which children and teenagers were slain? After the killing of Amess there was endless discussion in parliament about how we needed to crack down on social media, as though the radical Islamist responsible was motivated by online trolling rather than the creed of a medieval death-cult. We are like the woodland animals in another of Elia’s scenes, blissfully enjoying a picnic while armed and masked assailants appear on the horizon.

So while I have sympathy for Hoyle’s very human reaction to the spectre of violence, it is clear that the failure of politicians to accurately diagnose the problem is only making matters worse. Those few brave individuals who are prepared to speak out are putting themselves in danger. But with a collective effort the risk could be spread and at least become tolerable. After the Charlie Hebdo atrocity, media outlets refused to show the offending cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, but if all of them had done so simultaneously, the threat could have been diluted.

If the speaker of the House of Commons is prepared to modify parliamentary procedures due to threats from far-left cranks and radical islamists, where does this leave our democracy? It is hardly surprising that increasingly we are seeing commentators claiming that the values of liberalism cannot be sustained against this particular brand of authoritarianism. They suggest that liberals are too weak to tackle those who do not share their commitment to individual freedom.

It is true that too often exemptions have been made out of fear of causing offence to religious minorities. Police in the north of England failed to enforce the law against predominately Pakistani grooming gangs for fear of being branded “racist”. The inquiry into the Manchester Arena bombing found that security guards held back from intercepting the killer for similar reasons. Sharia courts have been operating in the United Kingdom for decades and, although their rulings have no legal standing, they do hold authority within Muslim communities. And we have seen how police have overlooked some of the worst behaviour at the now regular pro-Palestine marches in London.

But this is not a weakness at the heart of liberalism; it is the failure to properly follow its principles. All branches of liberal thought – from the conservative liberalism of Friedrich Hayek to the social liberalism of John Rawls – share an understanding that the rule of law is paramount. Individual autonomy cannot be preserved if the state is unable to maintain the peace and impartially resolve the natural conflicts of human existence.

A well-intentioned commitment to multiculturalism has enabled parallel societies to flourish within the United Kingdom. In turn, this has granted authority to the most reactionary elements within religious communities. Sharia law may be an ambition for ultra-conservative theocrats, but many female and gay Muslims will not find it such an appealing prospect. We need to stop appeasing these minorities within minorities, small groups of extremists that by no means represent the average British Muslim. And this means that our parliamentarians must retain their courage, even in the face of violent threats.

More than anything, we need to be able to talk about this crisis with honesty and candour. However comforting it might be in the short term, our political class cannot go on living in their Sylvanian fantasy, wilfully oblivious to the masked elephant in the room. This denialism is a form of procrastination, putting off the inevitable for another day. The values of our liberal democracy and our hard-won rights are under threat. It’s time to grow up.

Three female MPs have been given taxpayer-funded bodyguards and cars as concerns over politicians’ safety are escalating.

The women – who have not been named but include representatives of the Conservative and Labour parties – have had their security upgraded as MPs are said to be “petrified” at the abuse they are facing.

In an overhaul of safety measures in place for MPs, Security Minister Tom Tugendhat has been working with the Home Office, the police and the parliamentary authorities, as well as the royal and VIP executive committee (Ravec), a secretive organisation responsible for the security of senior politicians and the royal family.

The new process, launched following a referral by police or parliamentary authorities, comes as the threat level faced by British politicians has shot up in recent weeks.

A senior security source told The Sunday Times: “Many MPs are petrified by the abuse they are facing.”

The newspaper understands the three female MPs have been given close protection from private companies, as well as chauffeur-driven cars, which are usually only limited to senior members of the cabinet and the leader of the opposition.

“We’ve taken a front-footed approach to co-ordinating action against the people or suspects that intelligence suggests most threaten MPs,” said a senior Whitehall source.

Other MPs’ security is also under review if they are deemed at risk, while, for those not needing the highest level of protection, thousands of security measures have been put in place in London and at hundreds of constituency offices and homes. 

Private security operatives have been used at thousands of members’ surgeries and hundreds of events, alongside a police presence if required. MPs also have access to security advice, including via advisers based throughout the UK.

Ravec’s membership and decisions are mostly opaque, although insiders do say it has a budget of hundreds of millions of pounds.

It comes after the Palestine Solidarity Campaign defended the right to lobby MPs “in large numbers”, amid reports the group wanted so many protesters to turn up that Parliament would “have to lock the doors”.

The group said the issue of MPs’ security was “serious” but should not be used to “shield MPs from democratic accountability”.

The organisation’s director Ben Jamal said thousands of people were “shamefully” denied entry into Parliament on Wednesday as they attempted to lobby MPs to vote in favour of a ceasefire in Gaza in what he described was one of the largest physical lobbies of parliament in history.

The Times reported that Mr Jamal told a crowd of demonstrators in the build-up to the protest on Wednesday: “We want so many of you to come that they will have to lock the doors of Parliament itself.”

Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Commons Speaker who has faced calls to resign after going against convention during the SNP’s Opposition Day debate on a ceasefire, said his motivation for widening Wednesday’s discussion was fuelled by concern about MPs’ security because of intimidation suffered by some parliamentarians.

Mr Jamal said the group “does not call” for protests outside MPs’ homes and believed parliamentarians have a right “to have their privacy respected”.

The government’s political violence tsar has said police should have the powers to “disperse” protests around Parliament, MPs’ offices and council chambers that they deem to be threatening.

Baron Walney, the Government’s adviser on political violence and disruption, said on Friday that the “aggressive intimidation of MPs” by “mobs” was being mistaken for an “expression of democracy”.

The crossbench peer, who in December submitted a Government-commissioned review into how actions by political groups can “cross into criminality and disruption to people’s lives”, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme he was calling for police forces to act “uniformly in stopping” protest outside MPs’ homes.

Threads of Power: Who Is the Master of the Veil?

I have three theories: one obvious, one fun but no real evidence, and one that IMO would be amazing but is probably bat-shit crazy.

Spoilers ...

Oren Rosec

This one feels obvious. Maybe a bit too obvious.

The narrative introduces Oren Rosec when Alucard meets him in the pleasure garden right before his rendezvous with the White Rose.  The White Rose meets the Master of the Veil right after Alucard leaves.  So, same place, same time.  

And the narrative spends too much time on Oren for him not to be a player in some way.  The bit about his sister possibly being dead (“was”) is clearly setting something up.  

The Master of the Veil is an Ostra or a Vestra.  In the meeting with Berras and Ezril, the Master is described as having “burnished” hair.  (Ciara says dark at one point in her POV, not sure what that means).  Oren is blond.  In both the Master’s appearances, there is a lot of emphasis on the eyes not being visible, implying it is significant.  Oren has distinctive all black eyes.  Alucard sees a blue thread by Oren, signifying water powers.  The Master uses ice.  Berras describes the Master as being young.  Oren is young.

So, lots of signs pointing to Oren, but so far he’s not a very interesting choice.  Of course, we may get a lot more of him in the next books and if he is the Master, I’m sure Schwab will make him great.  

But there are a couple of more speculative possibilities:

2. Kell’s identical twin brother

Pure speculation and there isn’t much to support this. 

The biggest reason for it is the narrative - it opens up so many possibilities.  Lots of opportunity for “the man in the iron mask” swashbuckling and identity theft fun.   Someone from Kell’s family would be a lot more interesting in terms of the plot than a random Vestra we aren’t yet invested in.  Kell’s biological family is major unfinished business from the first trilogy.  Plus, the Master seems to hold a grudge against the royal family.  If the Master is Oren, why would he?  Whereas a brother of Kell could have plenty of reason to hate Rhy and the royals.  

Physically, there is nothing much to exclude a brother of Kell’s, but nothing much pointing to it.  “Burnished” hair could mean red, but much more likely blond.  If the hair is “burnished” and dark, it could be auburn.  

The use of the mask is interesting.  Kell’s identical twin would need to conceal his face, not just his identity.  

Reasons against: if Ciara is right that the Master is nobility, Kell would have had to have been born at least an Ostra.  That seems like a stretch.  Kell’s parents could have been anyone, but in A Life Erased, they certainly don’t act like nobility and they obviously aren’t rich.  And if his family was powerful enough to have ambitions for the throne and to be accepted by chummy with Ezril and Berras, it is hard to imagine them voluntarily giving up Kell.

Minor point, but the Master speaks Veskan, but like someone taught the language, not like a native speaker.  Kell’s father was at least part Veskan, so the family would be more likely to be native speakers. 

Also, the Master shows no real concern for Kell dying.  He’s back at the palace at that point, so if Berras’s plan works, Kell would be targeted along with Rhy and his family.  “I take it no one should be spared.”  There is really no mention of Kell at all, and if the Master was motivated by revenge for the loss of his brother, you’d think there would be something. So family of Kell is a stretch.

The last is the one that is really out there.

3. Astrid Dane.

She died at the end of the first book - or did she?  Astrid was possessing someone in the Red London palace right before her death.  She seems to have been wearing the possession pendant with Holland’s blood on it when she died.  She carried on a conversation with Kell early in the book while still in control of Rhy.  If she was controlling someone when she died, part of her could still be alive in that person.  And that person could have been Oren Rosec, in the palace as a guest at Rhy’s twentieth birthday party.

The big argument against would be that Alucard didn't see any suspicious magic threads on Oren. But there are ways to get around that. Maybe possession wouldn't be obvious if there is no link to a living person.

If Oren was possessed, his sister’s death makes sense.  They live away from the capital.  Their father was dying at Rhy’s wedding.  Nobody would be left who knew the original Oren well.

There is a sadistic element to the Master:

She flinched, but his grip tightened, seeming to enjoy her discomfort.  She’d handled enough patrons to recognize the ones who took pleasure in another’s pain.

And when discussing the killing of the royal family:

The humor in his voice was clear.  “I do wish I could be there. It is only so much fun to watch.”

Looking at Astrid’s first appearance in Kell’s POV in DSOM:  Astrid had draped herself over one of the two thrones… “  There are parallels to the Master’s first appearance in Ciara’s POV in FTOP: She noticed the way he draped himself across the chair …

Kell in DSOM: ..her hand slid past the paper and closed around his wrist … lightning danced up Kell’s arm, followed almost instantly by pain.  Ciara in FTOP: ... his hand closed around her wrist, his fingers burning cold.

Kell in DSOM: Kell did not realize she had risen from her seat until he felt her there beside him, running a finger down the silver buttons of his coat.  Ciara in FTOP: …the Master of the Veil was right there, no longer behind the desk but in front of it, in front of her … and later It left an awful, eerie feeling, like his fingers sliding over her skin.

Finally, on the narrative, Astrid as a villain draws Red and White London together, and has plenty of unfinished business with the MCs, particularly Holland.  

None of this is the smoking gun, and who knows what Schwab is really planning.  Whatever it is, I’m sure it will be great.

Chapter 1 - All answers lead back to Lila

Felix stared at the rusted metal door, trying to push down the bile working its way up his throat. The air permeated his nostrils with an unpleasant mixture of vomit, stale cigarettes and sour urine. He was itching to grab the handkerchief in his blazer and hold it over his nose. If it smelled like this out here, what would it smell like inside? 

Holding his breath, he opened the door slowly. A waft of cigarette smoke bellowed through the open door, exhaling into the Parisian night air. Like an omen, he felt as though he were walking into the dragon’s den, trying to find a jewel guarded by a sleeping, simmering threat. 

He still had time to turn around and walk away. There was this small fracture of himself that told him he shouldn’t piss off the most unhinged person in Paris. 

He walked into the dimly lit lounge. The speakers crackled with old rock hits from the seventies and eighties. The floorboards were rotted, sticky wooden floorboards, creaking with every step he took. The carpeted walls were dingy and yellowed from the smokey air of the bar’s patrons. There were a few patrons lingering in the booths off to the side, talking in hushed conversations. Most of the drinkers were playing cards or shooting pool in the back area. They reflected the bar they lingered in, haggard and torn by life with little care for themselves, mingling in the rotting filth they’ve succumbed themselves to. 

Why did he come here? Why did he think he’d get answers in a place like this? 

Because the fox said that all clues lead to her.

Sitting on a metal stool at the bar, Lila Rossi shot back one of the caramel colored liquor shooters that sat in front of her. Her hair was a dark chestnut filled with split ends, pooling all around her shoulders. Her once sharp green eyes now dull with all the life drained out of her from years in federal prison. Her bony fingers were lingering around her next shooter, toying with the outer rim. Her fingernails were unmanicured and unpolished, showing years of neglect. She wore a slinky orange Y2K print halter dress with a deep, plunging neckline and some strappy brown faux leather heels. 

Felix took a seat next to her. In a prior life, Lila was never someone Felix would ever feel pity for. She was always too prude for those kinds of pleasantries. He had to admit, something about seeing her disheveled and haggard form sitting here made him almost feel sorry for the woman sitting next to him. The once twisted, maniacal villain that Felix came to know, now reduced to a drunken, poor imitation of the woman before, a ghost of her prior life.

While Felix himself was a villain at one point, other than scoffs and odd looks every once in a while, he went on to create a life for himself outside of his personal transgressions. He had a wife and a daughter. He lived in London in a warm, comfortable home. He owned a successful business. He moved on. He wasn’t constantly plagued by a stupid choice he made in his teens and early adulthood. 

Looking at Lila was a bitter reminder that his life could have turned out much different than it is today. Another reminder that Adrien saved him in more ways than he could ever repay. 

Another motivator to find out who killed Adrien Agreste. 

“I knew one of you would stoop down to my level at some point.” Lila’s tired, mirthless voice croaked. She pushed the shooter she was toying with over to him. 

Felix met her eyes, the message they were sending conflicted with the coffee-stained teeth she displayed proudly with a bitter smile. 

Raising the shooter in front of her and nodding at Felix like an old friend, she sarcastically cheered, “Bottoms up.” She opened her chapped lips and threw the liquid back, swallowing it down without a grimace. 

Felix nodded back at her, took his own shooter and threw it back, swallowing the liquid down and tasting the familiar cinnamon flavor of too many drunken nights in his university days. His nose wrinkled at the thought of an oncoming migraine caused by the cheap alcohol. 

Lila hummed as she thought. “So, what brings you here, hmm? Are you expecting some answers for our recently fallen black cat and pig?” She asked while flagging down the bartender for another drink, tapping the tip of her finger on the bartop. 

Felix’s anger built with him, but he quickly swallowed it down, not giving into her bait. This is what she has always done, stroked the wrong nerve, trying to provoke. “Straight to the point as always,” He calmly replied, keeping his tone even. 

“I believe in consistency. Unlike some people. Too many secrets.” She smugly replied, bringing the freshly opened bottle of beer to her lips. 

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Felix inquired with a quirk of his brow.

Lila shrugged. “ I mean that those who keep their secrets don’t end up dead. Isn’t that right, Argos. ” 

"I’m retired," he briskly replied. He could feel Duusu ruffle in his breast pocket. The brooch was pinned neatly under his tie, hidden away from the world - just another way he was like his uncle, he hated to admit. 

"No one actually retires. That’s how Adrien met his end, isn’t it?"

Felix’s head whipped to hers, searching her face for another lie. 

Lila huffed a laugh, bringing her finger over to caress his arm up and down. 

Felix ripped his arm away. He felt disgusted by her presence. Why did he come here? She didn’t know what she was talking about. Adrien retired. He and Marinette started a family. He wouldn't pursue the hero's life again. He pushed back from the bar and started to get up when Lila hooked her unpolished talons into his sleeve. 

“I know what everybody’s thinking, but it wasn’t my fault,” Lila pressed, batting her cheap, glued-on lashes at him.  

"Then who’s fault was it?" Felix snapped lowly, gripping his hands tightly on the bar. “Because no one seems to have answers as to what happened to him!” 

“Look between the shifting waves. There you’ll meet Ra. You’ll find the answers there.” Lila whispered, her eyes conveying a desperation, one only seen in a threatened animal. 

Felix furrowed his brows, thinking about the words she said. Making a mental note to remember the riddle, he nodded.

She released her tight grip, saying in a normal voice again, “I hope you won’t mind paying my tab, Fe. Old bugs like us have to stick together.” She cooed. 

Felix dropped a fifty euro on the bar as he corrected her, “You mean buds.”

Lila shot him a knowing look, saying airly, “That, too.”

Felix left the bar, hoping he’d never have to go back. He didn’t receive the answers he wanted, but he gained something else. He knew Lila wasn’t behind the attacks. Another thought tickled the back of his mind, one that made his spine shiver. 

The real question is: who was Lila Rossi scared of?

The Spirit Bares it's Teeth- Book Review (Part 2)

(I)While I have read other books that take place in 1800 century Victorian England (The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue) this one was unique with its fantasy twist, it was also the first one that I felt like it tackled the cruelty of medicine back then. When it came to picking this book, I was already interested. I had read “Hell Followed With Us” and already knew I wanted to read more from A.J. I struggle with starting books, and the first chapter was rather slow for me, but after that I never wanted to put it down. It held my interest throughout the book. When it came to the black pages I was always excited, interested in what the spirits had to say. Sometimes it took a little to decipher their meaning but they were intense. I enjoyed the little plot twists present, they changed the whole perspective and looking back added much more depth to the characters.

(L)When it came to the logistics of the book, it made sense to me. What I truly appreciated was that it went past the setting of London and often talked about other places in the world, specifically America. It is something that was lacking in A.J White’s previous book. I enjoyed that the characters always acted within their roles and motives, even at the beginning when it wasn’t all that clear. It made their later actions not seem out of nowhere. I would have enjoyed it if the magic system rules would have been a little clearer with the veil. But it fits in the character, since we are in Silas’ point of view and he does not care much for the speakers. The world building presented fit in with the story and the characters.

(E)Overall, I liked the story. I knew I was going to like it from the moment I read it. As I read my enjoyment was consistent throughout. There were moments I did not like it, but that was consistent with the trigger warning given at the start of the book. Even those moments did not take away from the enjoyment, it was real and it did not shy away from reality. It made me bleed and weep, it cut into my soul, there are quotes that will never leave me. I will be thinking about this, the message and ideas it brings forth and what it argues for, as long as I live, it will resonate with me.

I overall give this book 4/5
