avocado
This past week with Mother Goose Time we learned about “Skins and Shells” which included walnuts, chestnuts and avocado...
^Zo doesn’t particularly like the taste of avocado, but she still had a lot of fun learning about them.
^ One of the activities of the day was learning about nutritious foods vs unhealthy foods. We set out a selection of different foods, and Zo had to select which ones were healthy vs unhealthy. After, we discussed what makes a food healthy and how it benefits our bodies... and why processed foods like marshmallows, although fine in moderation (and tasty!), make us feel sluggish and don’t give us the very BEST “fuel” to give us energy for the day!
^Apple taste test! Yum.
^ Guacamole! Like I mentioned before, she is not the biggest fan of avocado, but she was more than willing to give it another taste after putting in so much hard work mixing and making it herself. Getting kids involved in food prep is such a wonderful way to keep them interested and open to new foods (or foods they aren’t generally fond of).
^ The verdict: she wasn’t a huge fan BUT she was so happy to share with her daddy and I, and it was delicious!
^ We played a really fun game called “Texture Match”. We put two matching scraps of a variety of materials into a bag. Zo then closed her eyes and reached into the bag to grab a scrap. She had to describe the texture of that piece, then reach back inside and try to find the matching piece. She did a great job!
^ We also played a game called “Orchard Race”, which was essentially a fun way to review the letters we’ve learned this month! I love the games like this that are included every month. They are simple but so effective and fun. We have a lot of fun left before the month’s end, including a Pumpkin Patch Party! Stay tuned for an overview of the festivities (And yes, all of the materials for the party were included in this month’s box!! I’m constantly impressed by this company!)

cherries
This week’s preschool fun was dedicated to learning about fruit trees. We explored apples, lemons, cherries and oranges to name a few. Here are a few snapshots of “cherry” day...
^ We practiced our “ABB” pattern skills with pictures of cherries and oranges.
^ We made a Cherry Tree Collage using popcorn and paint!
^ She manned the microwave all by her lonesome. Big girl status! (side note: the curriculum even came with the bag of microwaveable popcorn. At Mother Goose Time, they are always stepping up their game with the included supplies, and I love it!)
^She painted her palm & forearm brown and pressed it onto the paper to represent the trunk and branches of the cherry tree.
^Then, she painted the popcorn pink for the blossoms. We ate the rest!
^It was fun to watch her with project. She usually is very careful to create exactly what the picture shows to the best of her ability. But with this craft, she went a little wild and made a few “tree trunks” didn’t worry about it being perfect. Definitely nice to see! To finish off the day, we learned the ASL signs for “Thank you” and “Tree”, and we brushed up on our identification of the letters A, O and R! Unfortunately, our local grocer didn’t currently stock fresh cherries (and maraschino cherries really gross me out, so I couldn’t settle) so we weren't able to incorporate them into the lesson. Luckily, we had been stuffing our faces with them all summer long :)

living in the dirt
We ended our Mother Goose Time “Nature Detectives” theme this week. We’ve had a lot of fun as we “investigated” trees, air, water and dirt! Here’s a peek in to our day spent learning about what creatures/plants live in the dirt.
^ “Undergroud Story”. Discussion: what would you bring to an underground party? Zo used the animal cut-outs to tell an imaginative story about this party. She decided it was a dance party, of course. She didn’t want to bring anything to the party, because “rocks are not a good idea ‘cause they get squished”. Also, the snake was hissing too loud so he was escorted off the premises.
^ Who Lives in a Hole? We created a bilingual book (eng/spanish). This was an exercise in letter/word recognition and second language acquisition.
^ “Invite the child(ren) to build a burrow from blankets and place their animal photos in it.”
^She LOVES when I let her use the stapler (supervised). If I was a horrible mother, I’d buy her a stapler for Christmas because she’d think I was the bom diggity. Unfortunately I’m just one of those “cautious/boring” moms who would rather not have their kid own something that could staple their lips/eyelids/fingers together (or their sibling’s). Sorry, Zo.
^She is convinced that she’s already fluent in Spanish, but really it was just “Po No Ga ZooZoo”. So, we've got a ways to go. Or she’s secretly been learning Mandarin Chinese behind my back. Typical.
^Cutest art project ever. I secretly wanted to make one too. Where do they come up with all of these clever but simple ideas?!
^While she worked on it, we discussed what plants live in the dirt.
^Ta-da! The Teacher Guide said to “encourage each child to invent an animal or creature to love inside the house. Make it from art supplies or draw it on paper if desired”.... BUT THEN....
^....Zo found THIS GUY. So she decided that he really needed a home, and that the mushroom house was the perfect space.
^I’m really nuts when it comes to frogs, snakes, bugs..all creatures in general. If the kids touch or play with them, I make sure they are very gentle and respect that they belong outside and in their own environment after they are done investigating them. So, I told Zo that the frog would be leaving the house after a few seconds (assuming he’d hop away)- but he stayed in there for a good 5 minutes. She kept peeking in at him and giggling. I will miss Nature Detectives! We’ve had a blast.
