Love My Life is the touching tale of a young lesbian who upon coming out to her father learns that both her parents were gay as well. 

As a through and through josei author Yamaji Ebine continually brings the real world of adult women to her pages in a way that is both familiar and fresh. The worlds of her characters go beyond realism in a way that not only captures the intimacy of love and of everyday connections, but in a way that captures intimacy with one’s self. With her focus on clean line art and exceptionally lonely panelling we are privy to seeing our protagonists rich inner world and are offered a chance to think as they do. Using her beautiful writing style we are able to follow Ichiko as her views on sex, relationships, gender, and mostofall family are put into question and transformed in subtle and touching ways.

Other than Ebine’s unique and intimate form of storytelling, I would certainly have to say my biggest draw into this particular work is the litany of very different LGBT character organically introduced  and how it affects the protagonist’s understanding of her identity. Regardless of whether you do have as many LGBT touchpoints as Ichiko does, these encounters remain real and potent. For any readers who are sick of seeing girl’s love stories relegated to schoolgirls, this is a wonderful start, and a very uplifting story.
