@jaspvid-week day 6: angst/hurt/comfort, in which a merman who's gotten a little too comfortable coming to shore to see the human he'd saved from drowning, finds himself caught by a fishing boat and taken to a strange place.
More under the cut:
He peers around the corner warily, scouring the area for employees, ready to feign being lost at a moment’s notice.
He sees no one, hears no sounds of conversation or footsteps or working, so he creeps quickly over to the large tank, the most likely one that they might keep something as big as a merman. The wall is mostly concrete on this side with a few observation windows, but there is a set of stairs leading up to the second level that overlooks the large tank.
He bites his lip, waiting another pause to make sure the coast is clear before he starts tip toeing over to the stairs. As he passes one of the windows, he does a double take, seeing a large green tail disappear behind a coral formation.
“Davey!” Jasper whispers frantically as he runs up the steps, kneeling in front of the short glass wall between the tank and the floor, his eyes scanning desperately. He passes over schools of fish, a few small sharks, a sting ray, until he sees that tail again. He looks around nervously, wary of calling for the merman too loudly and attracting attention. “Davey!” he tries again, a little louder.
His heart races as he sees the figure turn and swim towards him, ducking down as it nears before abruptly turning upwards to launch himself out of the water just enough to grab the edge of the glass partition, hauling himself up just as Jasper reaches out to pull David into a hug, holding him tight and uncaring to the water that soaks into his shirt as the merman’s arms wrap around his shoulders in turn, David’s body trembling in his hold.
“Oh, Jasper,” the merman says in relief, eyes clenched shut where his face is buried in the crook between Jasper’s neck and his own arm.
“God, I’m so glad to see you,” Jasper whispers as they hold each other, remaining like that for several aching moments before separating just enough to face each other, one of David’s hands clenched over the edge of the glass as Jasper takes the other in his own. The clawed, scaly fingers shake in his hold, gripping tight.
His eyes rove over the merman, checking for signs of harm, before picking out a few scratches in the dim lighting, small patches of scales missing from his tail. His heart drops, putting his free hand on the ginger’s shoulder. “Fuck, what did they do to you?” he whispers in dread.
“They didn’t- it was mainly from me struggling in the net,” David replies, his voice shaking and hand clinging tightly to Jasper’s. “Jasp- I’m- I’m scared, they were talking about moving me somewhere, some place far,” he says frantically. “I don’t know what they’re going to do to me!”
“It’s okay, it’s okay, I’m gonna get you out tonight!” Jasper insists.
There's an uncomfortable pause, a shaky breath, a dread.
“T-tonight?” David repeats weakly, heart sinking in a sickening feeling as his fins droop. A cold feeling swirls in his stomach, almost feeling like he’s been sucker punched. “Why- why not-”
“I’m so sorry, I can’t do it now,” Jasper says, his heart breaking at the look on David’s face, how let down he sounds. “There’s too many people around, I’ll never be able to just walk you out. I have to wait til tonight when the place is empty, and even then I’ll still have security to worry about!” he insists gently.
David chokes on a quiet sob, trying to hide it. “I understand,” he whispers, looking away, his hand still holding tight and trembling around Jasper’s, his knuckles surely white under the dark scales.
“I’m so sorry Davey,” Jasper says, his voice breaking, his eyes welling with the beginnings of tears as a terrible feeling runs through his chest. “It’s my fault this happened, and I hate to leave you in here any longer… I- Believe me, if there was any way I could get you out now-”
“It’s okay, I understand,” David says softly, sincere, squeezing his hand tighter, his lips pursing briefly as he tries to keep himself together. He takes a breath, letting it out slow. “I’m just glad to see you,” he says, so soft Jasper almost can’t hear, eyes closing tiredly, tears dripping into the water below him.
Jasper frowns, his heart aching fiercely to see the merman like this, captured, frightened. Dreading whatever these people have planned for him. Jasper heard the news report speaking of this place he’s to go to, a national marine institute. He can’t let it happen or his chance of getting David out will be gone.
He leans down, prompting David to look up at him, and moves closer until their foreheads are touching gently, David’s wet hair mussing with his own. The ginger stares at him in surprise, his eyes bright, a little red in the face as the breath trembles past his lips.
“I will get you out, I promise,” Jasper says quietly as the merman’s eyes well with fresh tears. “Or I’ll get my ass arrested trying,” he adds with a weak grin, his voice breaking again.
David stares up at him for a long moment, tears running trails down his cheeks as his lip trembles a little. “I trust you,” he whispers, blinking against the tears that blur his vision, unable to muster a smile in return but still thankful for a sliver of Jasper’s usual humor. It’s a comfort it this strange place, this glass box of water that seems so small, so confined, leaving him so exposed. At least the aquarium staff hadn’t hovered around his tank too long, treating him like any other ‘wild animal’ that needed some observation but not too much so as to cause undue stress. Leaving him to acclimate.
It was probably the only thing that allowed Jasper to sneak in here to see him, and for that he’s endlessly thankful.
Jasper takes a breath, swallowing the lump in his throat. “I- I should go before someone finds me, I don’t want to ruin it for tonight,” he says regretfully, hating the way David’s face falls again, but the merman nods without complaint, his eyes flickering briefly down.
“Okay,” David whispers, looking up at Jasper again as the man leans back, preparing to release his hand, but Jasper hesitates. They stare at each other as the low buzz of the aquarium goes on around them, the hum of systems keeping the water filtered, temperature controlled, manufactured ocean currents lapping water at the edges of David’s tank. Lights and filters and fans filling the space between them.
The pause is both a comfort and curse, words needing to be said but smothered beneath the heavy tension. It’s all held back for now, everything that’s pressing to be said slipping instead through the desperate grip between their hands and the ache behind their eyes.
For a moment, Jasper almost considers scooping David out of that damn tank and making a run for the ocean right here and now, security and people and cameras be damned, but he fights the urge. Much as it hurts to leave the ginger here any longer, he needs to wait until closing to have a chance. He can’t be slowed down by crowds of people and aquarium employees on top of security.
So he takes a breath, bringing their linked hands close, and presses his lips tight against David’s bony knuckles in a chaste but desperate kiss. He closes his eyes, breathing slow through his nose, feeling the trembling in David’s hand and hearing his breath hitch and soaking up this little bit contact. It won’t be the last, he tells himself, just to tide them both over until tonight.
It’s not the last.
“Okay,” he finally sighs as he pulled back, meeting David’s eyes, wide and shining in the soft blue light of the tank. “I’ll see you tonight,” he promises.
“Okay,” David repeats softly, still frightened, still devastated, but finding himself comforted by that one small gesture. So raw and full of emotion that he can’t possibly begin to untangle right now. It will have to wait until Jasper gets him out of this terrible place, he has to have faith that his friend will succeed. Faith that he’ll see the ocean again, and not this big research facility he hears murmurs of.
Jasper moves his hand from David’s shoulder to grip the one hanging on the glass wall, carefully lowering David down into the water. When their hands finally slip apart, the merman drops down under the surface with barely a sound. Jasper watches his figure sink down with a heavy heart, his chest aching, but he stands and turns to go back down the steps. He quietly trots down the stairs and stops at the observation window in the big concrete wall, seeing David.
The merman swims closer, putting his hands on the glass and watching him, red hair waving slowly in the current. Jasper watches him back for a long, heavy moment, managing a smile and wave, wishing to give the merman hope. A wordless promise to see each other again.
David finally manages a shaky smile back, one of his hands returning with a small wave. Jasper’s smile widens, his heart racing, his mind whirling with a plan of action for tonight, and he turns and hurries out of the employee area. He’s already been back here a long time, he doesn’t want to push his luck.
Tonight he’s getting David out of here.

Introduction
Tumblr media
| David | He/him | 24 years old | Fictive |
Tumblr media
Hello, I'm an introject of Camp Campbell's very own David! I've redone this intro now that I've had time to develop into my own person, but honestly, not too much has changed!
My source is important to me, but it's not all that I am, so I tend to post about it from a third-person perspective! This blog is mostly for fun, for me to share nature posts and Camp Camp content with my own occasional thoughts about the show itself. There's a separate blog where most of my system stuff and rambles go, but note that it will still be here since it's a huge part of my life!
Don't hesitate to reach out! I'm absolutely looking for source mates, kin, fictive, it's alright by me! Of course, everyone else is free to interact, too! The one thing to remember is that this isn't a roleplay blog.
The tags I commonly use are:
☆David rambles
☆Nature tag
☆Bird friends
☆Bug friends
☆Dadvid
☆Chaos trio tag (Max, Neil, and Nikki)
☆Jasper tag (Sometimes paired with the Jaspvid tag)
☆CCBFF tag (Gwen, aka my CCBFF-CBFL!)
☆Daniel tag
Friends:
(Ask to be added/removed if you want to be!)
☆ @ihatecampcamp
☆ @postparadisesystem
☆ @theghostofspookyisland (♡)
☆ @mewsys
That's all I can think to write for now! Campe diem!

Notes:
•This blog is SFW only.
•We're not endogenic.

No ones asked me for jaspvid headcanons and it’s my comfort ship so here you kids go- this is with alive and grown up Jasper of course
Jasper is well aware of his crush on David but doesn’t have the guts to confess because he’s worried David won’t feel the same and it’ll ruin their friendship
David is oblivious to his crush on Jasper until he has that “ah ha!” moment
Once David starts dropping hints Jasper jumps on them almost instantly
They are both SUPER lovey dovey and cuddly
“Grossly in love” some would call them
Loves to call each other pet names. David gives more sweet pet names like: honey, sweetie, sugar cube, sweet cheeks, pumpkin, sweetie pie. While Jasper also calls David these, he mostly calls David: babe, baby, boo, sugar, and his favorite, Davey Baby
They like to sing and dance in the kitchen while cooking dinner
David loves cooking breakfast for Jasper because he usually wakes up before him and likes to cook breakfast (it’s an easier meal to prepare in his opinion)
On the note of waking up early, when Jasper let David play animal crossing on his switch and/or DS, David would always hop on and do all of Jaspers little morning chores for a couple minutes in the game
Jasper is about an inch or two shorter than David
No personal space, which they’re fine with. They love to be in each other’s space all the time
Everytime one is sitting/laying on the couch or bed the other will come up and just plop themselves onto them
David loves to lay his head on Jaspers chest and listen to him hum
I like to imagine they adopt a cute little baby girl named Bonnie
David loves to hug Jasper from behind and squish his tummy
David adores Jaspers awful fashion, and likes to borrow a couple shirts from time to time
Despite how much David loves to throw big romantic gestures, Jasper always seems to top them despite them all being usually at home but very thoughtful (I literally almost took a nap while thinking about a certain scenario lol)
They have a nature themed wedding
Like to play with each other’s hair
Jasper always forgets how strong David actually is and always swoons over it

Local Sunfish Taking Requests for Short Drabbles
Hey guys!  I’m in a bit of a creative rut, mostly because I took a break from writing and now I’m struggling to get back in the mood for it.  So in order to remedy that, I’ve decided to open up for a handful of requests!  I’ll be taking ten asks sent to my inbox, anon or not, and will be writing short drabbles no more than 1k long.  Accepted requests will listed down below, and completed requests will be linked back to the list for easy navigation.
My rules are:
Must be for fandoms I’ve written for previously (please see my page, “Tags for Fanfics” for the full list)
Ships are allowed, but I draw the line at incest, pedophilia, etc.  You know the drill.
No NSFW requests, sorry folks
Heavy topics are okay, but if I find a request that is too dark even for me (i.e. graphic torture), then I will be turning it down
I will be picking and choosing the requests I write for based on: personal comfort level, my ability to best portray the scene, and if it is feasible to complete under 1k
Request guidelines:
A brief summary/description of the general scene you’d like to see;
If you’d prefer to just see a specific trope, that’s fine too
If it’s a specific au, I’d prefer it to be something I’ve written before just because prior knowledge is a lot easier to manage than researching it
Specific fandom and characters, including:
Ships if applicable (remember to detail dynamics if there’s a specific portrayal you want to see!)
Platonic relationships (friendly or hateful)
Genre if applicable (i.e. romance, tragedy, comedy, etc etc)
Something I can manage for under 1k, meaning no full blown plots!  Those tend to get away from me very quickly
Request List Currently:
Jaspvid College Graduation
Iroha/Rin with Third Wheel Len
Red and Green Journeying/Camping Together
GF and BF Teach Pico to Skate
(Available!)

Your Ex-Lover Is Dead - Jaspvid fluff and whump
Part three is finished! So i’m posting it here.
Content Warnings: mentions of previous s-lf h-rm, mentions of previous su-cide attempts, mentions of child endangerment/neglect (canon-typical), mentions of mental institutions, mentions of food.
Has a happy, hopeful ending!!
I awake slowly the next morning and nuzzle deeper into the pillow. It takes me a moment to recognize there is someone holding me in place, and another moment to recall where I was. I roll over to my companion to idly watch him sleep. He was peaceful, completely relaxed. I notice all the marks I left on him and for a moment felt apologetic.
After only a few minutes of totally not weird watching, I slide my way out of his hold. At some point after I had fallen asleep he must have thrown our clothing in the wash because I noticed my clothes folded neatly on the dresser. It was a sweet gesture, that was for sure. Instead, I locate a towel in the hallway closet and take a shower.
Not even five minutes into the endeavor I hear the door creek open and David shuffles in. “Mind if I join you?” He asks in a groggy voice.
“Yeah, sure,” I agree, moving aside as he slides in. He wraps his arms around my waist so that he can bury his face in my shoulder from behind. For a few long moments, we just let the water wash over us. We had no words. I don't even think either of us had many thoughts at the time. With a gentle kiss, he pulled away.
“Did you sleep alright? Honestly, I wasn’t really expecting you to hang around this morning.” He admitted sheepishly. I turn around to kiss his cheek.
“Why wouldn't I? I told you I still wanted to catch up, and it's not like we did much talking last night. I got cheated out of a good conversation!” I retorted with a smirk. He laughed at that, gentle and bright.
“We can make breakfast and talk more, then. I’d really like for you to stay longer,” he turned to pick up the shampoo and placed a dollop in his hand before lathering up my hair. My eyes fluttered closed as I enjoyed the pampering. “You can stay as long as you’d like, really. I don’t mind at all.”
“Well, I don’t leave back home until Monday. I can stay until then.” I suggest, mind starting to drift back to the previous night when he gives me a little scratch behind the ear.
“Sounds like a plan to me!” He chirps, and we enjoy the rest of the wash with more conversation and a bit of fooling around.
Around 9 am we settled in the kitchen. He had a table with a few chairs and a small basket with various snacks and fruit in it. I grab an apple as he starts poking through the kitchen.
“Do you like waffles? I have a waffle maker I haven't had a chance to try out yet.” He suggested, pulling it out from the back of one of his cabinets.
“Hell yeah, I’ll take some waffles!” I agree as I join him. “What do you need help with? I haven’t made waffles since I was a kid!”
“What was your childhood like?” he asks as he begins to retrieve the ingredients. From my hesitation, I can see concern start to creep onto his face again.
“Oh, well, it was… fine. My parents are nice, and my older brother is pretty cool. Hes going to have a kid soon, so we’re looking forward to that.” I deflect as smoothly as I can. He seems to take the hint and steers the conversation away.
“That's always fun! I don’t have any siblings. I guess that's why I latched on to you when we were kids! You sort of felt like a brother to me,” He paused for a moment, red striking across his face. “Wait- ok, well, that sounds weird now considering- Oh, gosh…”
I blink at him and raise my brows. “Really now? You gonna rephrase that?” I chastize, nudging his arm with my elbow.
“You know what I mean, Jasper!” he scolds, handing me a bowl. “Here, mix this.”
I do as I’m told, still chuckling. He fusses about looking for other ingredients, finally settling with tossing in a handful of frozen blueberries into the mix.
“Can I ask you a personal question?” He asks in a delicate voice, not looking at me.
“Sure,” I allow, having a few feelings of what might come up. I set the mixed batter on the counter and we wait for the waffle maker to warm.
“How did… you get all those scars on your upper arms? And your body. Really just, all over. I mean, I have an idea but-” He exhaled. “And you mentioned the one on your neck.”
“Yeah, I’ve had my struggles growing up. As I said, they're mostly self-inflicted. The one on my neck I did when I was 14. Did a shit job and my brother found me right after I did it. It wasn't very serious since I chickened out mid-cut, but it didn’t stop me from trying other things when I got older. I’ve been in and out of mental hospitals due to attempts, and just my general psyche.” I spill. My expression grows dark and a little cold as I recall, fixating on one of the kitchen tiles as I ramble on. David listens, quiet, waiting for me to finish.
“I’m sorry. I wish I had been there to offer more support, or at least my friendship. I’m sorry I brought it up, we don’t have to talk about it if you don't want to.” He says finally, squeezing my hand. My concentration breaks and I look at him, letting the darkness fall away from me some.
“No, it’s fine. I’m used to talking about it by now. It’s been a long process, but it's gotten easier as I’ve gotten older,” I nudge him aside to begin pouring the batter. “I’ve learned a lot of tools to keep myself grounded.”
“Did it start after… All that happened?” He asked, watching me work.
“Yeah. Having two near-death experiences in one summer does a thing to two to a child’s mind. By all accounts, I should be dead, or at least a lot worse off. Even though I survived I… I never felt like I did. I feel like a big part of me did literally die then and like… I’m a ghost. Like I’m not real and that I shouldn’t be here. Like I need to free my spirit from this world and pass on to the next, wherever that is,” I scoff at myself. Way to sound like a fucking basketcase in front of my childhood crush. “Sorry if this like, changes things. I don’t know, I don’t really talk about this to normal people.”
“Oh, no! It’s fine, really!” He insists, squeezing my hand harder. “I’m glad you’re sharing this with me. It's important. Also, I mean, we did share those experiences together. I didn’t think much of it until I was a lot older how lucky I was that summer, and it always had me worried about you! Wondering how you were. You never came back. Mr. Campbell just swept it under the rug like he does with everything.”
My expression twists in anger and disgust at the mention of Campbell and I take the opportunity to handle the waffle-making again. “Campbell as an ass, and if I never meet him again that’d be great.” I grumble.
Davey scans again as if looking for the right words. “During the summer I actually work there. If you’d like, you can come with me next summer. Maybe being back there will… Help put your soul to rest. It's also an excuse to spend more time together!”
“Only if Campbell isn’t there, I will.” From his expression dodging away, I had my answer.
“He comes by every now and again. Not often, but there's no way of knowing when he will show up.” He explained, fussing with the cuff of his sleeve.
“Well, I’ll… I’ll think about it, ok?” I finally reason. He smiles in a slightly strained way, still visibly worried.
“Please do. Now come on, let's eat while it's still hot!” He finishes plating our breakfast and whisks it away to the table. I take a seat, watching him buzz around setting the table, and grabbing our drinks. Even so soon after waking up, he was full of energy. Even after the heavy conversation, it didn’t ruin his mood. He notices me watching and offers a big, bright grin. I feel like I’m staring at the sun.
We enjoy breakfast. The conversation stays light, mainly about school or our friends. We exchange funny or weird stories from our childhoods. Before long the weekend slinks by and I make my departure home. we keep in touch, but he makes another suggestion; we should become pen-pals. Thinking the idea is cute and nostalgic, I agree and brush off my stationary set once I arrive at my family home.

Okay, Okay. So Maxvid
*long ass sigh*
I know I'm probably gonna get alot of hate for my opinion buuuut can everyone just shut the fuck up on how it's pedophilia. Technally it is in the show- BUT in most FANFICTIONS it's usually not. I tend to stay away from the underage ones becauae I dont really like them. Also! For all of those people saying 'don't ship it if you wouldnt ship it in real life' well good thing for us- it's called fiction. Basically anything is possible in fiction. I don't ship people in real life because that's REAL people shouldnt be egged on or forced to be together in real life, it happens when they want it too- not by someone's else's (your) will.
So in short- don't hate on every single person that ship Maxvid or other ships like it because the mass majority is writing or reading 18+ Max x David. And in general- don't generalize people, put it like this.
You have a group of friends, One is in the LGBT-and the rest including you aren't. A person finds out that one friend is in the lgbt and assume you and the others are aswell because of that one friend. Now if your not defensive of your sexuality I get It you probably dont care- but you get the picture. (If your in the lgbt switch it around)
Right- so just stop hating it gets annoying. You can acknowledge the fanfictions that are fucked up but know there are some people that read those and feel either selfconsious or pissed at you (the author of whatever you wrote) and that causes reaction. Neither one is good- I get that you think they should be self consious but it's also a factor if you don't know if They already are and now they just feel worse going on Tumblr- or Instagram. Which are my favorite apps and I cant imagine if someone made me feel uncomfortable here.
I'm basically saying- keep your opinion to yourself. Everybody has an opinion- you can share it but just remember not to generalize everyone.
Now I'm exspecting hate so if you repost this to bash me- coolio my dude. That's your opinion and I knew what I was getting into.
P.S~ I don't soely ship Maxvid- there's also Dadvid, Max x Preston, Jaspvid. So no I have mulitple ships with Max and David, (mostly David) with other people.

Jaspvid 10, 26, 41 and Stage Dorks 11, 31, 40 8D
10. Who drives? Cooks? Does the handiwork? Cleans? Pays the bills? Handles the public?
I think David loves cooking and is more likely to clean bc he’s always optimistic about everything and like if someone enjoyed ceaning, hen it is definitely this man. They can both drive, they take shifts during long trips. But I think Jasper would get much better-paying job lmao, so he handles the bills and also he’s much more chill so he should talk with others |’D
26. How do their friends feel about their relationship? Their families?
Honestly, I have no idea? I think David would really care to impress Jasper’s parents (I think they’d like him). When it comes to David’s parents, idk? I think the same ;;
But I think their friends really enjoy these two and also can hang out with their friends bf 8D
41. Are they party-goers? What are they like when they’re drunk? Does it happen often?
Nah, not really. Sometimes they can force themselves to go to the party but mostly they’re rather chill there anyway.
David gets super emotional and sappy? Starts talking about everything he’s been hiding. He can also just go fight someone and then like start crying and apologizing 5 minutes after the fight.
Jasper is very chill, sleepy and clumsy. He’s literally laying on the table or the floor. Usually wakes with food on his face|D
11. Do they celebrate holidays? Anniversaries?
Hmm, If I’m not wrong, Jeremy is Jewish? I think Christine would be super excited to learn something about his traditions and she’d share hers with him. Also I think they don’t strictly celebrate anniversaries… but they celebrate anniversaries of random things together? Not like the “since we are together” but the “since we’d both went bangee jumping and Jeremy nearly got the heart attack” or “When we saw this silly movie and Christine started laughing so hard that she started to cry and it was the first time I saw her like this” |D
31. Do they finish each other’s sentences? Pick up any phrases or habits from each other? Know when the other is hiding something?
They’d definitely try to jokingly mock eachother’s jinxes, but they’d do it in a heartlighted way! (See Star retending to be Marco and paying him compliments anyway) Christine is the one to finish Jeremy’s sentences. Mostly she gets them wrong but he rolls with whatever she said bc he finds it sueper adorable c:
Also I think they both are bad and hiding secrets and seeing if someone is hiding something from them so they just tell each other eventually when they feel like it |D
40. Any special memories? Do they have a special place they like to go to?
I think both of them tried doing something that touches other one’s interests? They weren’t that good at it but eventually both of them enjoyed it ;w;
Honestly? They enjoy sneaking in the school theatre, talk endlessy while siitng on the stage and they’re usually trying acting. They have good memories of this place, even Jeremy ;u;
Thank you! 8D

how was 2017 campcamp like?
The fandom was definitely at it's peak in 2017!! You had the series trending on Tumblr tags, fanart, fanfics, and animatics were coming out DAILY, a buncha big name artists were drawing fanart, it was a blast
The fandom was really active and fun at this point, it had a lot of jokes and shit (SHRIMP!! HEAVEN!!! NOW!!! being a big one), it had a lotta ma///vi///d shippers tho. BIIIIG problem back then.
AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON ALL THE AUS!!! Everyone and their mom had a supernatural au and that's partly bc everyone has a different vision for what kind of monster everyone would be (but MOST people agree on werewolf David which is it's own au)
Serial killer David was a pretty popular au, haven't thought about that one in a hot minute tbh fndndndfnnd
My cc next gen au was at it's peak here and that's SAD. I need to get back to it at some point dndnefnrnejf
I loved all those damn aus, esp teenage dadvid, we need to bring that one back.
Dadvid was HUGEEEE back in the day, it was basically it's own damn fandom. It still has a soft spot in my heart but like... there's more to the series than dadvid dndfndjfbjd
God, the fanfics back in 2017 were BOMB. They were more lengthy back then and a lot of them were actually completed start to finish, but I still sob over Runaway Home not being finished 🥺😭😭 I'm about to reread it bc I'm really relating to it now
If you remember "turn me on deadman" you're eligible for a veteran's discount AND a free therapy session and I feel like if the 2017 fandom watched the campfire tales episode they'd fucking combust
Danvid, jaspvid, makki and maxpres were some of the most popular ships back in the day and now they're all MOSTLY dead. I pour one out 2 the maxpres shippers
I vaguely remember there were a FEW cases of teens trying Daniel's kool-aid and somebody wound up at the ER (last i remember they were fine, just a bit of fucking INTENRAL BLEEDING. Please don't put rat poison in your kool-aid u dumbasses)
There was so much happening this is only the tip of the iceberg

It Seems Fitting
Summary: (get it cause they meet at the fitting rooms)
Well this is something I’ve had sitting around for a while and it was going to accompany a piece for day 7 of Jaspvid week until the other idea hit me. Since I had this mostly fixed up to post by that time I decided to finish up and post it anyway.
- - - -
David hummed softly as he turned back and forth in the mirror, tugging the dress shirt down a little and trying to see how it rested in the back. He liked it, it looked good with the slacks and vest but he would have to get the seal of approval first. He turned around and opened the door to step out of the dressing room stall, looking down at himself as he did so. “Okay, how does this look?”
“Rockin.”
David froze because that was most definitely not Gwen, looking up to see a man standing there with a pair of black pants slung over his arm, paused midway to find an open room. He looked nonplussed, but David immediately flushed red in mortification regardless. “OH, I’m- I’m sorry I was expecting my friend to be out here I’m so sorry-” he stammered.
“Hey hey, it’s chill,” the man said with a grin, making David’s stomach flutter. “But for real though, it’s good on you.”
“You really think?” David asked, his shoulders hunching a little closer to his ears.
“Yeah dude. I mean, I’ve been told my fashion sense is shit so take my word with a grain of salt, but I think you look baller,” he said matter-of-factly. “Classy.”
“Oh. Thank you,” David replied, pleasantly surprised.
“David I found you another tie that’s less stupid looking- oh, hey, friend of yours?” Gwen asked as she walked up, looking between the two curiously.
David stammered for a moment before the stranger cut in, rescuing him. “Impromptu outfit rater. I was just tellin’ your boy here he looks-” he paused to click his tongue, rocking a fist side to side with his thumb and pinky extended. “Awesome.”
David flushed as Gwen let out a bark of laughter, giving him a look that doubled his embarrassment and told him he’d never live this down. “You giant dork, did you just barge out here and ask a stranger?”
“I wasn’t looking and I thought you would be out here like you said!” David protested in mortification, his ears and cheeks red as can be and suddenly feeling too hot under the bright lights of the fitting rooms.
“I’m sorry but I had to get a different tie, that one with the pine trees is so fucking stupid,” she shot back while the stranger watched on, obviously amused by their bickering.
“But I like it,” David whined in protest.
“Fine, let’s ask your new outfit rater,” Gwen teased as David started to protest, holding two ties up to the man while ignoring David’s hurried attempt at intervention. “Which one do you think would go best?”
“Gwen, come on, leave him alone I’ve already bothered him enough-”
“I like the pine trees,” their new friend replied calmly, smiling at their incredulous looks.
Gwen groaned, her eyes rolling so far skyward and her shoulders dropping in defeat. “God, seriously, you too?” she demanded, giving him a betrayed look despite knowing this man for all of two minutes.
“Yeah man! I’m not a big tie guy, but when I am absolutely forced to wear one, I do like me a good fun pattern,” he said, winking at David. “The trees are cute, and the green matches your eyes.”
David’s face went redder, his heart giving a big uncomfortable thump because excuse me pardon but what did the wink mean??
Meanwhile Gwen made a frustrated noise. “Fine, keep your stupid dorky pine trees,” she grumbled, tossing the tie at David and earning a surprised noise as he fumbled to catch it. He blinked down at the tie before looking up to watch Gwen as she left to put the other one back.
David swallowed, looking back over to his impromptu outfit rater. “Um, s-sorry,” he said, trying to smile.
“No worries dude, it’s all good. I’m Jasper, by the way,” he dropped casually, shoving his free hand in his jeans pocket and resting his weight to one side.
“Oh! Uh, David!” the redhead replied pleasantly, straightening out the tie in his hands before he could wrinkle it. “It’s nice to meet you.”
“Likewise,” Jasper grinned, making David’s stomach flip again because gosh what a nice smile he was such a sucker for a nice smile and he was so not prepared to have a conversation with someone so handsome in the dressing room after embarrassing himself like that-
“So Fancy Pants, you guys gettin’ ready for a thing?” Jasper asked, breaking him out of his spiraling thoughts.
“Oh, yes, Gwen insisted that I get something new otherwise she won’t be seen with me,” David murmured, embarrassed.
Jasper laughed kindly. “Well I’m sure you two will look great together no matter what.”
David was about to reply, when something hit him and he suddenly furiously did not want Jasper to think the wrong thing even though they’d probably never see each other again but he had to let it be known- “Oh, no we’re not d-dating,” he corrected hastily, making the other man’s eyebrow quirk slightly, that calm smile still on his face. “But we are going together to a friend’s wedding this weekend, since we’re both single.”
Jasper suddenly blinked, losing his amused look. “This weekend? Long shot, humor me here, but it’s not Deena and Sai, is it?”
David’s mouth dropped open just a tiny bit. “Yes, it is. You know them?”
“Yeah dude, I’m goin too!” Jasper said with a grin, holding his arms out a little. “Sai is one of my buds from high school.”
“Gwen and I have worked with Deena for the last two years,” David said in surprise.
“Small world,” Jasper replied, looking amused and a little… delighted? It was an unexpected break from his so-far casual demeanor that threw David a little bit for a loop. “Well then, I’ll let you get back to it. Hope I see you there, Davey,” he said with another wink, making David’s heart to that stupid flip-flop thing again.
Who gave this perfect stranger authority to send him so completely off kilter?
“Y-yes, see you then,” he said, trying to sound like he hadn’t just been run over.
Jasper’s grin stretched a little wider before he headed down the row of dressing rooms, disappearing into one of the doors.
David let out a shaky breath, trying to compose himself just as Gwen appeared at his side again and made him jump. “Are you still standing here? You been talking to your new boyfriend that long? I don’t blame you, he’s hot.”
“Shhhh!” David shushed her frantically, waving a hand in the direction Jasper had gone as his heart raced double overtime now between the interaction and Gwen’s sudden reappearance. “He’s just down that way,” he whispered, still red, still flustered.
“So what? God, what a dork. Are you gonna get that or what?”
“I’m- I was- you-”
“Come on David I don’t want to be here all day, I want to get lunch,” Gwen insisted, crossing her arms impatiently.
David sighed in frustration, retreating back into the changing room to get back into his normal clothes and most definitely not pouting. “You didn’t even tell me if it looks good,” he mumbled petulantly, just loud enough for her to catch.
“You didn’t need my opinion, you seemed to hold his high enough,” Gwen teased calmly from outside the door, making David go red again. Was he that obvious??
“Gwen, please keep your voice down,” he whined, imagining Jasper several doors down probably hearing at least Gwen’s half of the conversation and maybe his whispering and probably deciding that David was in fact a giant mess and now debating whether or not he actually hoped to see them at the wedding-
“Why? What’s the big deal?”
“Because,” David said pertinently as he gathered up the clothes and opened the door, stepping out. “He is going to the same wedding this weekend,” he hissed, his lips pursing in what liked to think was a stern glare but in all actuality looking like a peeved child.
“What! No way!” Gwen exclaimed as the redhead quickly shuffled her out of the fitting rooms.
“Yes, and I’d rather not be a complete mess if we see him and he overheard,” David grumbled softly.
“Why not? He seemed kinda sweet on you and you were a total mess already, like, near disaster levels and he was still cool,” she mused. “You can talk to him again, maybe get his number!”
“I- nonono, I don’t think he- he wasn’t-” David stammered.
“He totally was,” Gwen shot back. “He low-key complimented your eyes and winked at you, he is not straight.”
David took a shaky breath as something hit him. “Twice,” he said softly in realization.
“What?”
“He… winked at me again after you left,” he said, embarrassed. “When he said that he… hoped he’d see us there. And he called me Davey.”
Gwen looked incredulous and maybe on the verge of hitting him or strangling him or both if the mood struck her right. “And you still think he’s not interested?? He thinks you’re cute you idiot!! If you don’t find him at that damn wedding and get his number I will end you! Did you at least get his name?” she asked, her tone clearly pleading work with me here.
“Jasper,” David said, hunching his shoulders a little.
“Well at least you got a foot in the door,” Gwen scoffed, her murder plans paused as she gave him a not-so-gentle but still friendly nudge where he’d slowed a little. “Pay for your shit and let’s go eat, then you can sigh and daydream about his smile and whatever all you want.”
“Gwen,” David whined miserably.
- - - -
Nerves ate him up all week as David found himself simultaneously dreading and anticipating seeing Jasper at the wedding. He had a hard time imagining someone so handsome and easygoing would so easily take a shine to his awkward self when he’d been such a disaster, but Gwen was adamant. That didn’t stop him from dreading making a fool of himself again as he stood there sipping from his water at the reception on Saturday. But also meticulously scanning the crowd looking for Jasper...
So what if he’d mentioned David’s eyes. And complimented his outfit. And looked kind of excited to find out they were going to the same wedding. That didn’t mean anything. Gwen insisted he’d been flirting but no one ever flirted with David how was he supposed to know. There was no way Jasper had been flirting with him. Right?
“You got the threads!”
David whirled around in surprise, his heart racing upon seeing Jasper approaching, looking unlawfully handsome in black slacks and a purple dress shirt. He’d rolled up the sleeves and there was the ends of a black tie with little rainbow polka dots hanging from his pants pocket and now it was going to be ten times harder talking to him. He was toeing the line between causal and formal and it just looked so good on him that it wasn’t fair. “J-Jasper,” he greeted, smiling and trying to control the butterflies in his stomach.
“Hey Davey, you look great, just like I said,” Jasper grinned. “Even better without price tags hanging off ya,” he added playfully.
David just barely stifled his surprised laugh. “Thanks, you- you do too. Purple really suits you,” he said shyly.
Jasper didn’t seem the type for formal clothing, judging by the jeans and well-worn t-shirt he’d been in the other day, but he sure pulled this off nicely. It didn’t even seem out of place that he still wore the few colorful woven bracelets David had spotted in the dressing room. It fit him.
“Thanks dude, I can clean up alright sometimes,” Jasper teased, shoving his hands in his pockets. “Where’s your friend? Gwen, right?”
“Yes, she’s talking with Deena and some of the other ladies.”
“She abandoned you? Weak,” Jasper tsked softly. “I’ll hang with you, if that’s cool?”
“O-of course,” David replied, receiving a grin in response that suddenly rendered him a little bit weak.
They talked for a little while about standard casual things, work, hobbies, interests, the stupid stuff Jasper had done with Sai in high school, and David found himself slowly relaxing as time went on. It was getting easier to talk to Jasper, he was so casual and laid back it was like a vortex of calm that was drawing him in, telling him to stop being such an anxious mess. He would love for that to happen, it would be a lot easier of finding someway to see Jasper again in the future if he weren’t a total anxious mess.
But no matter how nervous he was, he couldn’t help but laugh at the cheesy quips and jokes Jasper made, and the other man seemed a tiny bit delighted at every little laugh and giggle he got in response.
Without realizing it, they’d gotten lost in their own little corner of the reception talking for nearly an hour. When the band started playing again after a break and people headed for the dance floor, Jasper’s eyes fixed in that direction. They’d both gone silent when the music started, Jasper’s keen gaze remaining on the crowd for a few moments before suddenly clicking his tongue as if a decision had been made. “Soooo,” he drawled slowly, casual, glancing over at David. “Yoooouu... wanna dance?” he asked hopefully.
David met his eyes in surprise, a blush burning his cheeks as his mind fought to catch up. “I- y-yes, I’d… love to,” he said softly.
Jasper’s face lit up. “Sweet,” he said happily, holding a hand out.
David took in a quiet, shaky breath before placing his hand in Jasper’s and letting the other man lead him over to the dance floor.
“I’m not like… a super great dancer? So do you wanna lead or should I?” Jasper asked, surprising David because he hadn’t even thought about who would lead.
“Oh, um, either way is fine?”
“Well you’re taller, so I think you should,” Jasper said matter-of-factly, turning to David as they found a spot and bringing the redhead’s hand to his waist without missing a beat. He arranged their hands together on the opposite side before resting his free one on David’s shoulder, giving him a disarming grin.
David flushed at the feel of Jasper’s waist under his palm, swallowing. “Well I don’t think that- has anything to do with it- but- okay,” he stammered, moving to start the dance and placing his feet carefully.
“It’s a way to decide and get us dancing sometime today,” Jasper shot back playfully.
“Fair enough,” David laughed softly, watching their feet for a few moments as they continued to move, slowly getting used to the contact. “You’re not that bad!”
“Gimme time, I’ll fuck it up, don’t worry. And that’s not a threat just a promise,” Jasper replied casually, making David laugh again. “That’ll be the true test, how many times can I step on your feet before you get sick of me,” he teased.
“Well, I have to say your charm far makes up for whatever you may lack in dancing,” David replied.
“You think I’m charming?” Jasper asked, his eyes alight.
“It’s hard not to,” David said, smiling at the adorable and sincere delight on his dance partner’s face.
“I’ve been told goofball, dork, manchild, square, way back when anyone but me still said that, but never has my me-ness been described as charming. It’s pretty cool,” Jasper decided. “You’re pretty cool,” he added, grinning.
“Oh, I am not,” David chastised softly.
“Nah dude, seriously, otherwise I wouldn’t be taggin’ after you like a lost puppy,” he laughed, going a little pink actually. “I’m stoked and amazed I haven’t driven you nuts yet.”
“I don’t mind at all,” David replied, smiling at Jasper’s surprised look. “I um, I really like talking with you,” he added.
“Most excellent,” Jasper said, his grin coming back full force and his cheeks going a little darker. It made David feel better to finally not be the only one who was flustered, even if it was only a little on Jasper’s part.
They continued to talk and dance into the next song, and while they kept a respectful inch between them, it was never tense or uncomfortable. Despite Jasper’s earlier insistence that he wasn’t a good dancer, they flowed well together. No one’s feet ever got stepped on and things got even better when the band switched to something a little more upbeat.
People around them started dancing to match the new mood, and Jasper so smoothly pulled David into a new style of dance he took a few moments to adjust. It was… he didn’t know what it was. He thought maybe Jasper was making it up on the spot but then again it kind of seemed like that’s what most people were doing.
“C’mon Davey, loosen up, this is the part where we just wing it and no one gives a shit if we look like dorks,” Jasper teased, lifting David’s hand up and spinning under it so easily and casually that it pulled a delighted laugh from the redhead before he could stifle it.
“There ya go!” Jasper egged happily, the grin nearly splitting his face, his eyes bright and shining under the lights strung above the dance floor.
David’s face was flushed with delight, his own smile rivaling Jasper’s as they fell into a comfortable rhythm together.
They danced, happily oblivious and lost only in each other for some time. Without even realizing when it had happened, David had grown much more comfortable with Jasper. He was still a bit of a mess and the butterflies would not let up the whole time, but it became much easier to talk and joke with the other man.
He wondered where Gwen went, catching glimpses of her through the crowd sometimes but otherwise it was just them. Eventually they decided to break for some water, leaving the dance floor and heading over to the refreshment table to catch their breath. David felt like he was in a dream the whole time, as Jasper seemed perfectly content to stay with him as they leaned against a low stone wall near the venue’s fountain, talking quietly.
He wasn’t sure when it had gotten dark, but a bit of a chill was definitely setting into the evening air, and it made him very aware of Jasper’s close proximity next to him. He could feel the man’s body heat where their arms were nearly touching, creeping in through the fabric of his dress shirt and making David feel warm, hazy.
During a few moments of comfortable silence, David felt his phone buzz in his pocket and took it out to see a text from Gwen.
Want to wrap up your shit? Go in like 30 min? Tired.
When had it gotten so late? Had it been so easy to just get lost for hours with Jasper?
Sure, he texted back, setting his water down so he could use both hands while Jasper glanced curiously at him. I’ll meet you in front at 10:30?
Better, she responded, and he could hear her grumpy, mostly seriously threat even through text.
He smiled, looking up at Jasper. “That was Gwen, she’s almost ready to go and I’m designated driver. So I’ll be leaving at 10:30,” he explained, half because he felt rude for texting next to Jasper, even though there had been a lull in the conversation, and half in apology to cut short their evening.
“That’s cool,” Jasper replied evenly, not quite hiding a touch of disappointment in his voice. He was graceful about it though. “I’m a night owl but I’m feeling ready to bail too. I’ll hang with you until then?” he asked hopefully.
As if David could possibly turn down even a few more minutes with him. “Of course,” he replied, smiling.
He’d completely forgotten about asking for a phone number and now would’ve been the perfect time, but he just found himself soaking up that last little bit of time together. They talked quietly, worn out from dancing and just the overall noise and energy of the reception. Talking about nothing in particular just to talk, and as much as David loved Jasper’s constant jokes and his fun energy, the low, soft tones of his voice now in the calmer atmosphere was soothing, warm.
A few minutes before he was supposed to meet Gwen, they stood up and started heading for the front, passing through the dwindling reception and into the building where the ceremony had taken place, and finally outside again facing the parking lot. They stopped a short distance away from the doors to be out of the way of people leaving, but still visible to Gwen whenever she arrived.
“Soooo,” Jasper drawled playfully, much like he’d done earlier, scuffing his shoe on the pavement with hands shoved in his pockets, the tie still hanging off to one side.
Even though he’d glanced down when they were dancing, David only just now realized that Jasper was wearing all black sneakers, not dress shoes, and it just… fit him. He made it seem like a perfectly normal thing and not at all out of place for the formal event, and David found it very endearing now that he’d noticed. Dress shirt and pants, sneakers and worn out bracelets, and those piercings… It was all so charming. So Jasper. He came out of his little reverie when the other man continued.
“If you think I’m cool enough, you wanna like… hang out sometime?” Jasper asked, looking up with a hopeful grin.
David smiled back, his heart racing excitedly although a little toned down both from being tired and less nervous around the other man. “Yes, that sounds wonderful.”
“Awesome,” Jasper replied, digging his phone out. “Let me just get set up… okay, number?” he asked, typing the digits as David spoke and saving it into his contacts. He kept typing, clicking his tongue as the glow of his phone lit his face in soft blue. “Wig, here’s me,” he added, just before David’s phone buzzed in his pocket. “So you have mine. Well! Where’s your friend at?”
“I’m… not sure,” David frowned, looking around. He’d seen her from a distance but hadn’t talked to her in some time, and he wasn’t sure if that was intentional on Gwen’s part or not. “She’s only a couple minutes late...” he mused, checking his watch with only a little furrow to his brow.
“I’ll wait with you? Or I can help you look for her if you’re worried,” Jasper offered, sounding a little concerned himself.
“Oh- there she is- Gwen!” David called, waving and catching her attention.
“There you are you bitch,” Gwen greeted as she walked up. “Are you two still just flirting or did you get digits yet?” she demanded, poking David in the chest. She wasn’t slurring but she was definitely drunk, he decided.
“I- we- Gwen-”
“Listen,” she said, turning to Jasper and giving him a deadpan look. “He really likes you, but he’s a fuckin’ mess and I saw you two dancing like forever, so please put me outta my misery and say you two are gonna date or somethin, yeah?”
Jasper stood silently through her tirade, gaze flickering to David, who had a hand over his eyes in mortification. He looked back to Gwen, taking everything in surprisingly easy stride. “Well, hopefully,” he said with a grin, seeing David’s hand drop as the ginger stared at him, wide eyed and blushing. “We did phone numbers and I was planning on asking him out, sooo...” he trailed off, eyes flickering briefly to David with a warm smile.
“Well good!” Gwen insisted, poking Jasper now to emphasize her point. “Cause he’s a weenie and you gotta ask him, otherwise he’ll just be a sad little shit and tell me you don’t like him and whine about how hot you are and how nice your stupid smile is I’ve heard all about it-”
“Okay, Gwen, sweetheart, I think that’s enough please, thank you so much,” David interrupted softly, a little frantic, setting his hands on her shoulders. “How much did you have to drink?” he asked with a frown.
“Daviiid, it’s a fuckin’ wedding, you’re supposed to get plastered,” she complained.
“All the same, I think it’s time we get you home, alright?” he asked, steadying her as she wobbled a little in her heels, the first physical sign that she was feeling the alcohol. Definitely a good time to take her home, both to rest and before she made an unfortunate step in those heels.
“Whatever mom,” she shot back.
“Want a hand?” Jasper asked sympathetically.
“Please,” David replied softly, ducking under one of Gwen’s arms just as she waved her hand dismissively before their new friend could help.
“I can walk David for fuck sake, just gimme a second to get out of these heels from hell-” she grumbled, bending one leg at the knee and hanging onto David as she slipped the shoe off, before repeating with the other and pushing away from him. “Jesus christ, mother hen,” she huffed, holding the shoes by the straps and walking towards the car as the men trailed after her like ducklings.
David trotted ahead a little to unlock and open the passenger door, dutifully allowing Gwen to clamp onto his shoulder as she got into the car, making sure her dress and hands were safely inside before shutting the door. He sighed, straightening up and turning back to Jasper. “Well, thank you, for… everything today,” he said shyly.
“Course, thanks for hangin’ with me,” Jasper replied, holding his hand out.
David blinked, hesitating only briefly before relenting and placing his hand in Jasper’s once more. The other man brought it up and kissed his knuckles, making David flush. If he wasn’t already smitten, the hopeless romantic in him would’ve taken a nose dive off a cliff over that small, but tender gesture. Hell, he had anyway. It was still sinking in that Jasper liked him, wanted to ask him on a date, and he’d momentarily pushed that out of his head while making sure Gwen got to the car okay-
“I had a great time with you,” Jasper said softly, giving his fingers a gentle squeeze and pulling him out of his spiral. “And I really meant it, that I’d like to take you on a date sometime, if that’s cool?” he asked, giving a hopeful look.
David took a shaky breath, smiling. “I’d like that.”
“Rad,” Jasper said, a wide grin lighting up his face.
The torrent of butterflies in his stomach was so strong, and he was so high on cloud nine and a little bit of panic from everything, that before he could overthink it David found himself leaning in and placing a quick kiss on Jasper’s cheek.
Now it was Jasper’s turn to look gobsmacked, as he flushed bright from the action. “Oh, wow, double rad,” he whispered.
David giggled softly, gesturing over his shoulder to the car. “I’d- I’d better get her home.”
“Yeah, yeah, course, take care of Gwen,” Jasper said, releasing David’s hand finally and ruffling his hair nervously, looking a little shell shocked. “Drive safe, yeah?” he grinned, still pink in the cheeks.
“I will, you do the same,” David replied, his smile growing. “Bye Jasp, talk to you soon?”
“Absolute,” Jasper replied, shoving one hand in his pocket and giving a mock salute with the other. “Bye Davey,” he said happily, walking backwards a few paces before whirling around midstep to practically float off to his own car.
David took a deep, steadying breath and let it out slow, unable to keep the silly look off his face as he watched Jasper disappear among the departing guests, his heart still pounding in joy and disbelief...
“Hey!” Gwen barked from inside the car, startling him both with her shout and the loud slap of her palm hitting the window. “Let’s go pinetree, sometime tonight!”
David took one more breath and turned to walk around to the driver’s side, pointedly ignoring Gwen’s rude gesture.
Despite her tendency to get ornery when drunk, Gwen still offered him a playful congratulations on ‘bagging his man’ once they were on the road and heading home. She teased him the whole way about the way they’d been connected at the hip since finding each other, and it confirmed his suspicions that she’d ditched him to give him time alone with Jasper. Why he’d seen her only in passing all night as she seemed to avoid him.
Which was why he was very sincerely thankful this one time to be abandoned by a friend at a social gathering. This thought found him smiling fondly the whole way walking Gwen to her apartment, keeping an arm around her as she fumbled keys out of her purse and unlocked the door. Despite more protests, she allowed herself to be escorted inside and to her bedroom.
David carefully unraveled her hair of it’s pins and twists, got her a glass of water while she changed, and made sure drank at least half of it before bidding her goodnight and leaving, making certain the lights were off and the door was locked on his way out.
Once he was finally home and able to start getting himself ready for bed, his ears rang in the blessed silence after listening to the sounds of the wedding all day. He’d changed and brushed his teeth by the time his phone buzzed, and David was ridiculously elated to see Jasper was already texting him.
J: Hey, sorry for the late text, just wanted to make sure you got home okay and Gwen is good.
D: We’re both fine, thank you. I got her situated and I’m at home now.
J: Cool, good to hear.
D: Thanks again for today, I had a really great time.
J: Yeah totes, me too! I’m really glad the wedding came up cause I thought you were real cute but there’s no smooth way to ask for someone’s number in a changing room without looking like a creep, ya dig?
David giggled softly, flushing.
D: I don’t think I would have minded but I’m glad it worked out how it did. Besides Gwen getting in your face at the end there.
J: No big, she’s cool, outspoken. I like her. Anyway, it’s really late so I’ll leave you alone. Talk to you later?
D: Sounds good. Thanks again, and goodnight.
J: Night!
David let out a happy sigh as he set his phone down, almost unable to believe how lucky he was. He didn’t know what Jasper saw in him, but he wouldn’t argue. He really hadn’t even expected to have that great of a time at the wedding, let alone meet anyone. He’d expected to stay close to Gwen, talk to Deena and Sai and maybe some other people from work the couple had invited. He certainly hadn’t expected to dance with anyone but Gwen.
Then along comes Jasper, looking happy to see him, chatting with him, asking him to dance. He’d never expected someone so fun and handsome to be interested in his dorky self, but Jasper really seemed to like him. He stared at the ceiling of his bedroom in the dark that night, still smiling like an idiot as that sweet but casual kiss to his hand replayed on loop in David’s head, all the while wondering how soon he might see Jasper again.

(AO3)  (2020)  (V-Day)
@jaspvid-week
Familiar Faces, Worn Out Places
Summary: It's only been one year since the supposed end of the world, but David and Jasper still linger to wander these quiet lands. So then, it shouldn't come as a surprise that they stumble into a place that's too familiar and close to home than they like. David's heart squeezes as the memories bombard him from every which way.
Just how much has changed? And how prepared is he to face these changes headfirst?
Word Count:  3583
FHAKJSLDFJAK WHAT A WAY TO START, ONE DAY LATE ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGH ALRTH-

They didn’t think their journey would lead them back here.  There’s something eerie with seeing a town they recognize still look the same but also… not.
Sleepy Peaks was never meant to be this sleepy, he thinks.  David reaches for Jasper’s hand, squeezing it tightly as his eyes skirt from one store to another.  The wind rustles the doors left ajar, wood smacking against wood as familiar, old stores creak from the damage they’ve sustained.
Time has passed too slowly for it to have only been a year.  Has it only been a year?  Maybe a bit longer?  It feels like ages since they’ve shared that chocolate in an attempt to celebrate Valentine’s day.  Their worn boots crush the shattered glass still speckled across the ground, windows shattered like so many other stores, and yet, seeing it in a place from their childhood?
It feels wrong.
“Davey…”  Jasper looks over at David, concern clear on his features as they stand in what remains of the sleepy town.  “Maybe we should head out somewhere else.”
“No.”  Despite his misgivings, he wants to continue forward.  There’s things he wants to see.  Things he… wants to see one last time before moving on.  “There might be some useful things left over, you know?  We gotta look around some more.”
“If you say so.”  Still, Jasper never drops that look of concern.  “Just tell me when you’ve had enough, alright?  We can always bounce if it becomes too much.”
“Yeah…”  He smiles cheerfully despite their memories slowly creeping in from years long since passed.  It’s strange - they never really explored this town much as children, despite stopping in it often before being dropped off at that old camp.  But as they approach the rickety General Store, the sound of excited, chattering boys echoes in his mind.
”Jasp!  Ma said we can get some candy!”
“Radical!”
“David, I said one candy bar each, not everything at the counter!”
“Heeey, I remember this place.”  Jasper whistles as the ransacked store sits full of memories before them.  “You tried to shoplift from here once!”
“Jasp!”  A bright, embarrassed blush raises to David’s cheeks as his criminal past is brought up.  “You know it was just a phase!”
“Suuure.”  He grins easily as he steps into the store, head turning this way and that before he makes his way to the counter.  Another whistle escapes him as he plants his hands on the counter.  “Damn, this used to feel so tall when we were kids.”
David walks to his side and imagines a pair of small hands barely reaching the top of the counter.  “Yeah, we could barely see over it.”
“You used to think that since you couldn’t see the cashier, the cashier couldn’t see you when you stashed a bar in your pockets.”
“Really?  You’re still going on about that?”
“Really.”  Jasper waggles his eyebrows as David laughs.  “Your mom got so mad when you got caught each and every time.  You’d think you’d learn after three straight years of getting caught, but nooo, you had to be Mr. Bad to the Bone.”
“Stop it!”  David playfully shoves him as Jasper snickers.  “Like you were any better!”
“Hey!  Between the both of us, I’m pretty sure I was the goody-two shoes.”
“Says the master of the puppy dog eyes.”  David shakes his head as he strolls over to the empty shelves, hoping to spot something overlooked.  “You could give the cashier the saddest eyes, and he’d give you a free candy bar.”
“I bet I could still pull it off if I tried hard enough.”  With that, Jasper sidles up to David and bats his eyelashes at his boyfriend.  “I bet you’d give me a free candy bar if you were the cashier!”
David groans guiltily before pushing Jasper’s face away.  “...I’d at least pay for it first with my own money.”  Jasper’s boisterous laugh echoes in the empty store as they continue following the ghosts of their childhood through the aisles.  Nothing seems to be left behind, even as they check the broken-into backroom and behind the cashier’s counter.
Nothing remains.  A store that once housed the goodies and rewards for a well-spent summer now sits haunted with the memories of the two men still standing in its shell.  David takes Jasper’s hand and squeezes it once, before looking over to him with a strained smile.
“It’s been a year anyways, it’s no surprise that it’s empty.”
Jasper only nods along before tugging him out of the store.  They pass by familiar storefronts, ghosts of their former selves taking peeks through the broken glass as they whisper about the newest, coolest gadgets, or the delicious smelling scents coming from the restaurants and diners.  Lumps and bumps line the road as the pair traverse on the old asphalt, the road cracking here and there from whatever disaster may have struck this town.  Earthquakes perhaps?  David eyes the sides of buildings blackened by forces that could be man made or naturally caused.  Fires too, it seems.
How many of the residents died?  How many escaped?  Sweat beads at the base of his neck as they approach the entrance to the woods, the road leading into it impeded by fallen trees and debris.  It’s a good thing they’ve long lost the use of cars by now.  They climb over the trees and carefully trek along the road, watching out for potholes and largely uneven parts of the road.  Tree roots have managed to grow underneath the asphalt, lifting chunks of it high enough to trip over.  A year of overall disuse has the entire road littered with fallen leaves, branches, and countless coverings of debris.  Jasper grunts as he trips over a well hidden crack, caught just barely in time by David as he straightens himself out.
“Christ,” he grumbles, looking ahead into the shadows of the forest, “how much further?”
David looks up and follows his gaze, the end nowhere in sight.  The car ride to the camp always felt like it took way too long, while also being way too short.  It took him a while to really warm up to the place, but by the time he truly started to like the place, he stopped going to camp.  What can he call the memories?  Happy?  Bad?  Bittersweet?
He looks to Jasper as their hands linked together silently.  “It shouldn’t be much further.”
“I’m bankin’ on that.”
The trek isn’t the hardest one they’ve made.  They’ve traversed over rockier terrains, neighborhoods ankle deep in water where fallen telephones can be anywhere out of sight, and stepped over rickety, unstable planks of wood in houses falling apart at the seams.  They’ve fended off desperate, violent survivors many a time before as well, running when possible, fighting when inevitable.
They don’t talk about the blood that covers their hands.
...So yes!  They have been through much, much worse.  A walk through a forest with a neglected road?  Should be a breeze through the park!  And yet, they drag their feet as if they’re travelling through muck, looking over their shoulders with an unneeded precaution, hoping to delay the inevitable.  Jasper’s memories couldn’t have been as fond as David’s, given their last year together but…
“Oh.  Shit.”  Jasper’s mumbled exclamation draws him out of his thoughts.  “Looks like you were right, Davey.”
Turns out, they didn’t drag their feet long enough.  Ahead of them stands the familiar old sign of Camp Campbell, though half the letters are missing.  The rickety old sign is hanging loose and limp, the one remaining chain allowing it to swing idly as a strong wind jostles it.  Apprehension grips David as he looks over the once familiar campgrounds.  When did the disasters start?
When did they begin?
“Are you sure you wanna do this?”  Jasper looks over to David, concern clear on his face as the old camp remains eerily quiet.
“...I mean, who knows, right?”  He laughs nervously and slips his hand out of Jasper’s grasp.  “There might still be some supplies!  Some things we can take a-and stuff…”
“Davey…”
“I know what you’re thinking.”  He takes a step away from Jasper, rubbing his arm nervously as he looks up at the faded sign above them.  “But I-  I just want to make sure.  You know?  I know the disasters started just before summer hit but I- I just want to make sure.”
A hand lands lightly on his shoulder.  “You sure about this?  What if you find something you don’t like?”
It takes him a moment, but he finally looks over to Jasper with a wobbly smile.  “I think we’ve both gotten used to that feeling by now, right?”
An uneasy smile rises to Jasper’s face as he nods.  “Alright, bud.  How do ya wanna do this?”
He looks ahead to where the mess hall is.  The place used to be so lively but now…  “Can we split up?  Just to cover more ground, and stuff.”
“...Right.”  A skeptical look crosses his features before Jasper’s hand lowers to squeeze his arm with a comforting smile.  “Just promise me you’ll holler if something’s up, capiche?”
“Capoche.”  His response gets a chuckle out of Jasper, before his eyes search his one last time before stepping back.
“Alright, let’s meet back here before the sun sets.”
“Gotcha!”  David waves as Jasper wanders off to the left, disappearing from sight as he goes to explore the grounds there.
Now he's all alone.  He takes a deep breath and sighs.  Well, it's not a bad thing, after all.  It's what he wants.  It's what he... needs.  He shakes his head to clear it.  Right!  Exploration.
Right.
He walks right into the mess hall, the old doors creaking as he forces his way in.  Tables and the like are covered in dust, but otherwise look mostly untouched.  Nothing seems worse for wear, but the windows have been cracked, and some are even broken.  His boots crunch over the shards as he examines the windows.  It's not easy to determine if the broken windows were the cause of the many natural disasters, or if they were man made, but judging by the lack of disruption and chaos in the mess hall, he can hazard a guess and blame it on the elements instead.
...Oddly enough, the mess hall smells like nothing.  It's not something that should take him aback, but it does.  If he remembers correctly, it always smelled like mashed potatoes and butter in here.  It was a staple for every meal.  Thinking back, he always hated the mashed potatoes, but Jasper loved them.
"C'mon, Davey!  It's Quartermaster's specialty!"
"Ugh, well maybe he should do a better job at his specialty.  It tastes like wet paper and crud!"
"Davey!"
His steps falter as he steps closer to the kitchen.  They were never allowed back here but...
Well, that never stopped him as a kid, now did it?
He pushes the door open and peeks around the kitchen.  Nothing much has changed except the microwave looks both newer and incredibly beaten up.  A shelf catches his attention, but his nose immediately crinkles up when he realizes the foodstuffs on the shelves are nothing but perishables that have long since perished.  Another door catches his eye, and if he remembers correctly, this was where the staff kept the rest of the food.
"I dunno, Davey, this doesn't seem like a good idea."
"I didn't think you were such a goody-two shoes, Jasp."
"I'm not!  I just don't think you should do it during activities!"
"Exactly, no one's gonna expect us to come in during the daytime-"
"What are you two doing here, children."
"..."
"..."
"..."
"SCRAM, HURRY!"
The memory nearly pulls a laugh from him as he opens the pantry door.  Like the shelf outside, all the perishables have long since succumbed to pests and mold.  He picks up a can and looks at the best by date.
19... 98?
He quickly puts it back down and chooses not to think about the implications.  Okay, maybe the pantry is a bust.  He turns on his heel and walks back into the mess hall.  The unspeakable silence makes him swallow hard.  It's... unnerving to see it so empty and quiet.  He can still hear the laughter and groans of disgust that used to reverberate within these very walls.  As he walks past a table, he swears he hears a familiar giggle from his memories.  He turns to face the childish giggle, but nothing but a shadow from his memories greets him.
...Maybe some fresh air will do him some good.  All that mold is messing with his mind.
His feet take him back out and towards where he thinks the campers were supposed to stay.  Noises fill in the blank spaces, excited campers making conversations from the past that he once overheard in his youth.  The crunch of the dirt keeps him tethered in the present, but even as he glances to the side, he swears he can see the shadows of former friends running around in the corner of his eye.  This place used to be so sunny, so bright and full of life.
Now, all he sees are the broken down remains of yellow tents.  Leaves and twigs cover some of them, and a fallen tree crushes a good few of them further off.  He approaches a particular one, the third one to the left, and carefully tries to set it back up.  It's no use - the poles on the inside have snapped into pieces, rendering it impossible to get upright.  Still, he tries to at least straighten it out.  He grabs some broken branches and props it up haphazardly.  It works, but it won't last.  A strong breeze could topple it over.
Still.  He stands back to admire his handiwork.  It's strange how he's taller than the tent now.  Before, it used to feel kind of big with enough space for him to do a little jump inside if he felt like it.  Now, it looks sad and tiny, with its tree branches keeping it upright in a poor resemblance of its former self.  It's... not the best.  The sides are sagging, and it looks ready to topple into itself but...
He blinks, and he can see Jasper's childlike appearance duck out from the tent, laughing boisterously.
"Come on, Davey!  We're gonna miss the bonfire!"
"We can't miss the bonfire, stupid, it's still gonna be there even if we're an hour late."
"Still!  C'mon, broski!"
"Don't call me that!"
"Broski!"  Jasper's young laughter fades away as he rubs his eyes.  The tent topples into itself like he predicts.  He sighs and looks away from its remains, instead looking towards where the dock should be.  A tree blocks his path, but that's never really stopped him before, now has it?
He climbs over it with ease and follows the dirt path down to the lake.  The dock is largely untouched, but the kayaks are long since gone.  In the distance, he can see the familiar sight of Normal Island, but he feels no need to explore that place.  If there were any survivors, maybe they would be there but...
Splashes and excited shouts fill the insides of his ears, his gaze remembering the counselors that helped kids learn how to swim, or fellow campers having summer fun by swimming around the lake and splashing each other.  He considers jumping down to check under the dock, a place he used to hide under until Jasper swam under and dragged him out, but getting his pants soggy is the last thing he wants at the moment.  Instead, he sits at the end of the dock and keeps himself from giving into temptation and letting his legs dangle into the lake.  He looks up and sees the clear, blue sky with not a cloud in sight.  If this were a normal camp day, all the campers would be going out for a pleasant hike.
No fallen trees.
No eerily silent woods.
Just a normal, noisy, exciting hike.
A shuddery sigh passes through him, and he closes his eyes.  Camps aren't meant to be quiet.  It's wrong.  It doesn't feel right.  Even when he hated the place, he'd only seen it as lively and inexplicably loud.  Now it's... it's...
Dead.
The lake laps at the shore softly, but there's no laughter to accompany the noise.  No splashes, no cries, no shouts.  Even as he tries his hardest to remember, the loud silence is the only thing that reigns around him.  That, and the sound of heavy boots marching up behind him.
"Thought I'd find you out here."
He looks over and offers a weak grin.  "Hey, Jasp."
"Heya."  Jasper plops down next to him, a distant look to his eyes as he stares out at Normal Island.  "...Feels weird, huh?"
"Yeah..."
"Different vibe from..."  He gestures vaguely before dropping his hand to his lap.  "Different from broken down stores and dank cafes."
"Strange, huh?"  David hugs his knees to his chest and rests his cheek against them.  "We had some good memories here too, though."
"Yeah."  Jasper sighs as he leans back.  "Good and bad.  Nothing like stealing candy bars though."
David snorts.  "No, nothing like that."
"But we did steal that kayak one night."
"I stole the kayak.  You were just along for the ride."
"Mr. Bad to the Bone strikes again."  Jasper turns and grins with a touch of sadness to it.  "You always did have this thing for stealing things as a kid."
"I did, huh?"  David shrugs with a small smile.  "You were the only one who seemed to notice."
"And the cashier."
"And the cashier."  A small chuckle escapes him as the breeze ruffles their hair.  "...So did you find anything?"
"Nah.  Just some dust, expired rations, dirty mags in the counselor's cabin..."
"Jasp!"
"What?"  He laughs as David lightly shoves his arm.  "We're all adults here.  You can't tell me you've never looked at a dirty mag before."  He waggles his eyebrows and it's enough to draw a laugh out of David.
"No, I never really looked at one before.  But was that all you found?"
"Yup.  Nothing else."  A pause.  "Not a single body, not a single skeleton.  Hell, I couldn't even find the Quartermaster."
"I'm pretty sure he must be dead by now."
"You think so?"  Jasper raises an eyebrow at that.  "That dude seemed like he could live forever.  Like, I'm pretty sure I saw him stab himself with a hook once.  Preeetty sure that happened."
David laughs as his thoughts circle back to Jasper's previous statement.
"So no bodies?"
"None."  Jasper grins as David feels a weight lifted off his shoulders.  "Just an empty campsite."
Not completely.  David looks out to Normal Island and thinks the campsite will never quite be empty.  No one truly died here, but he knows it'll always be haunted by their memories.  He stands up and dusts himself off before reaching a hand out to Jasper.  "Just an empty campsite."
Jasper takes his hand, and he pulls him up with ease.  "Ya ready to bounce from this joint?"
David takes one last look around the place.  A part of him wants to look around more thoroughly, maybe explore the activities field one last time, or walk into the mess hall one last time, but the weight of the memories might crush him even if Jasper's by his side.  And besides, he trusts Jasper's words when he says there's nothing left for them here.  He smiles as he nods his head.
"Yeah, I'm ready to go."
"Sweet."  Jasper leans in for a quick peck on the cheek, his thumb rubbing comforting circles into the back of his hand.  "Where to next?"
"Don't know."  David leads them back to the entrance of the camp, where the rickety sign continues to swing and perhaps will always continue to swing.  "Wherever the path takes us?"
"Sounds like a valid reason to me."
They walk away from the remains of their past, never knowing if they'll ever come back to revisit it.  A part of David hopes that they will come back to the old campgrounds.  Maybe life will one day return to this old shell of a place.  Maybe it will forever remain lifeless like today.
He's not sure what is left for a place like this.
"Wanna watch me try and vault over that tree like an Olympic track star?"
"Jasp, don't-"
"Too late!"
"Jasper!"
There's a lot of maybes on his mind.  But maybe something will change someday for the better.  Jasper laughs as he runs at the fallen tree in front of them, only to trip and smack his face against the bark.  David yells and comes to his aid and is met with boisterous laughter, and he can't help but join his fallen boyfriend in his fit of giggles.
Maybe.
But until then, he'll cling onto these old memories.  If these are all that remains of this old place, then he'll hold onto each one in its memory.  For the sake of the place where they met.
”Hey, you’ll come back next summer, right?”
“No way, dweeb.”
“...Aw.  Then how are we gonna meet again?”
“...Stop looking at me like that.  Fine.  Fine!  I’ll come back next year!”
“Radical!  That’s a promise, right?  Pinky promise me!”
“Ugh, fine, you nerd.”
For the sake of their memories, he’ll let it rest fondly in his heart.  Until he can finally leave them all to rest.
