Artist Analysis - Sixbane
1. Kindness:   In this piece, Sixbane has attempted to show the emotion and personality trait of Kindness, and in my opinion she has succeeded. The way the mother Kintaur looks so calm and gentle with her young, the way her expression shows that she knows no harm will come to them, helps portray the feeling of kindness; that she’s looking out for her children. One of the things I simply adore about this is the way Sixbane shades her work. She gives her drawings a sort of shiny/glossy look to them, and this is achieve by using both overlay and luminosity layers. This helps by showing how sleek and soft the fur of the kintaur is. The shading is also different from the other artists we have looked at, for example GabrielEXE used shell shading to achieve a more cartoonish look, however Sixbane uses a softer brush with more blending to make the piece feel more realistic, even though it is stylised. The colours of this piece also stay true to it’s title, for the muted greens and browns provoke a sense of clarity and calmness that the family of kintaurs are so obviously enjoying. Overall, I believe the piece to be a great example of how lighting and colour theory can provoke a certain idea or emotion in someone; and this is something I may look into more when it comes to me creating my characters. 2. Takeo-Juliet Sketch Sheet:   whilst this art piece is actually made up of a variety of sketches, doodles, and fully coloured and shaded pieces, I’d rather focus on the piece as a whole. This is because this sketch page is something that’s rather intriguing to me. Sixbane had created this as a way to show the relationship between two characters, showing how dynamic the two can be as well as their relationship, individual personalities, and their different moods and forms. I especially like this as it feels more alive, more fluid, and more emotional. This is something that I like as, in a character designing point of view, if I were to do a sketch sheet like this it would help me get across the personality of my characters much more naturally than writing about them, or by stating their traits on a personality sheet. Overall, I feel as though this form of artwork, whilst poor at showing the character’s overall design like a reference sheet, shows off the personality perfectly. If I have the time, I may do something like this in order to further explore my character’s personalities.   3. All the doubt in town: Chibi drawings aren’t usually my preferred taste in art, however when I saw this piece of theres I simply had to include it. Chibi drawings is a traditional Japanese drawing method where they exaggerate features of a human being to make them appear more cute, a little bit like how western caricatures exaggerate the looks of a human being to make them look more bizarre. This piece exaggerates not only the look of the character, but also their personality. This is shown in both their face, with the soft blush and large eyes indicating innocence, and in their pose, which implies that the character is shy. The chibi style is perfect for this, and the way Sixbane has used it is to create a cute art piece of a character that the style suits. I like the thin, black lines used and the scattered shading; it almost makes it seem watercolour in appearance. Overall, I think that I could take the exaggeration of some features of a design to create an overall emotion.   4. Bacon Flavoured Sunflower Seeds: This piece by Sixbane is much like GabrielEXE’s reference sheets, however Six has included two forms for her characters as well as more brief information. One thing I adore about this design is how Six has transferred some design aspects from the humanoid version to the feral one, showing that they’re still the same character without being too drastic. The colours used give off a steam punk feel, almost dystopian, with the only accent colour to stand out being the green of her eyes. I feel this is a nice touch as it shows her position of a pilot, someone who has to be around machinery just like those in steampunk universes, as well as giving her a defining characteristic that not only stands out, but would stand out across any transformation. In this piece, Six has gone with a quick sketchy style, not really minding about going back to line the piece more. I feel as though she did this to get her idea on paper, that she doesn’t fear mistakes but rather embraces them. Just like Pine and GabrielEXE, she too has coloured the lines to give it more of a realistic feel. Whilst this piece doesn’t portray much personality to the viewer, it sets the stage for what kind of world the character must live in, giving us an idea of the fashion of the lands they are from and what their culture may be like; this is something I hope to pull into my work.   5. Leofaeg Couple   Just like HiddenCities, even Sixbane has had their attempt at using the binary tool. However, they’ve taken the much more traditional route of attempting to pixel the characters as though they were in an old Nintendo game, giving it a nostalgic but also professional view. This is the difference between Pine and Sixbane’s pieces; Pine uses the binary pen as though it were a normal pencil, drawing a thick lineart and colouring it in, however Sixbane clicks every pixel to try to get it to look as realistic yet stylised as possible. One thing I like about this piece is the shading and how much time and effort it must have been to put in every single pixel to make sure the shading looked realistic in a medium that leaves little room for realism. Overall, I think this piece is adorable, showing the companionship these two characters have in each other, showing how they want to protect one another, and most of all I admire the sheer time and effort that would have to be put into the piece.   6. bfie448ucd A wolf walking alone across a road in a barely lived-in city, only accompanied by the buzzing neon lights that reflect the long-gone memories of a busy night life. This piece is beautifully crafted and composed, mostly to do with the shading and lighting used. Sixbane has been sure to include a lot of reflections to bring this place to life and to give it a realistic flare, since lighting and shading play an important part in realism. This piece also explores the emotions of being alone, but not lonely, as the character has a neutral expression, almost having a curiosity about them as they’re looking elsewhere as they’re crossing the road rather than at their destination. The complementary colour combinations draw the attention of the viewer whilst the blacks and greys set the tone for what time of day it is, all adding into the overall feel of the piece. I really love how they have been able to use multimedia aspects to bring this piece to life; using both line-less painting for some of the background, but using a lineart piece for the full body. This furthermore proves that they are talented in a variety of different styles and ways of drawing - something I may wish to explore whilst creating my test pieces to see what I myself would feel most comfortable to do style wise.
