1- who is/are your comfort character(s)? :-)

It changes around, but at the moment we've rotated back to Marceline Adventuretime and (shilling for my OC voice) Morgan my best friend Morgan B Slater, witch, librarian, and incredibly just some girl who needs a break

But yeah I've been going on kicks of listening to Marceline songs on repeat because they just kinda hit and Olivia Olson has a beautiful voice.

And then with Morgan (context that she's an rpg character) sometimes I'll just go and write soft moments from her life and she's the only character I have that I can say I've been inspired to do that with, so yeah :)

I don't know if you've expanded anywhere but your post about the curtainless twin peaks horse lives inside my brain so presently and I am extremely interested in hearing your thoughts on that symbolism please?

I have not! Or, I've probably rambled about horse and horse byproducts off discord but it's lost in the swamp of 2017 TPTR meta.

So for me, the horse (in s3 and merrily reframing its previous appearances) stands for passive evil, for allowing bad things to happen through inaction, through closing an eye. This mostly comes from the "the horse is the white of the eyes and dark within" lines, which I think describe that very thing, and from the fact that it appears to Sarah whose role in the story is doing precisely that. (then the horse is arguably Judy's biggest symbol and so that's how I ready Judy - after all, it's from a diffuse state of uncaring that Bob can emerge)

Then there's the red room, the "waiting room" as it is described. The one liminal space where you can still think in terms of humanity and psychology, I feel. It is the place dominated by the color red, which I think in general the show uses as shorthand for the illusion of the world, "veil of Maya" sort of thing. In a moment of clarity (well, of extreme confusion and trauma, but you gotta roll with the punches and make the most of those), the curtains as an actual veil are parted and show what lies behind this construct of human lives and connections we've built for ourselves. And it's... an empty, alien expanse, with only the symbol for "not caring" standing in it.

And maybe I'm completely off the mark when compared to the authors' intentions, but that's what I got out of that scene and I think that's of a piece with those beautiful quotes from NitW and Disco.

yall are very kind to me. let’s go with a snippet from the aforementioned fantasy drama, cantor, because i’m feeling bold:

The nights slip through my fingers in glittering shards and leave me crossed with wear and tear I don’t remember—a bruise here, a slowly beading scratch there. I fall asleep at one countertop and wake up at another; the threshold of any halfway decent dive bar becomes more home than home. From one week onward, I only remember in fragments. Raised voices and calloused palms between smoked-barrel shots and curling up in corners with someone’s good fortune, rouse, cash in, repeat.

as i’m usually an avid fan of third person, and an avid critic of first, i wasn’t expecting to write this in the latter. it ended up working in my favor, especially because a lot of the writing in cantor is sensory-heavy and impressionistic, and that style with an unreliable narrator makes for a delightfully heady effect.

19. is there something you always find yourself repeating in your writing? (favorite verb, something you describe ‘too often’, trope you can’t get enough of?)

oh no, so much! let’s see: people in my writing do a whole lot of gazing, sighing, pursing their lips, angling their shoulders. i’m a big fan of the verbs “snapped” and “quirked”, and i’m a proponent of adverbs to the point of overuse. i write a lot about characters with secrets as integral aspects of their identity, found family, devotion to the point of codependency, and this. oh, and eldritch horrors, of course.

Beca I'm like pretty sure (hold on lemme google) well okay apparently science says that's not a health hazard if you're washing it but that still feels. A little sketch. None of us are alone.

It takes Hamid a long time to realize this, after he moves to England, as he rattles through places that he hasn’t managed, doesn’t manage to make home. There were some shining moments, when he didn’t feel so alone, but it never really felt like him. Jagged bits of broken glass lodged their way into his heart every time he laughed with Gideon or with Bertie.

The only times he felt like maybe he’d escaped were when he had moments to spare with Liliana, or when a letter from one of his sisters arrived and he could imagine himself in their arms, laughing at the twins’ latest antics instead of just reading them off paper.

And it all fell apart. English schools, Cambridge, his world. Then there was blood on his hands.

It’s almost fitting, he reflects, later, that he found his family when his hands were once again covered in blood, conjured to save them. Even if what led him there was Bertie, one of those shards of glass, suffocating him every time he tried to take a free breath, a breath that was his own.

But even tempered glass can’t withstand dragonfire. Not flames born of bonds forged while living and laughing and thriving together. Almost dying, yes, and tears, and partings, and loss, but there’s no place in Hamid’s heart for those shards when he can have it full of love. His friends. His family. Grizzop, in his own way, even as they shouted and argued, who was there for him. Zolf, with his own past to work through, who left this fragile thing in Hamid’s hands, and left him room to grow. Sasha, who didn’t know how to talk to people, but who knew what she was doing, and who belonged with their little broken family all the same. And Azu. Azu’s love is far too much to allow broken shattered glass to stay in Hamid’s heart, and he lets them go without a second thought once he knows what true friendship is.

Even when he was left in a brave new world with only Azu, mourning, unable to snatch a moment to properly process or grieve, he had their memories, their warmth.

None of us are alone.

Jon (TMA), Caduceus (CR), and Nine (17776) for the ask thing 👀

That sure is an interesting array of characters okay lets see

I’ve been going back and forth on this one, but I think I’m giving getting stuck in an elevator for 10 hours to Nine. It’s between them and Caduceus, and as funny as I think it would be to have a sentient satellite train me in a mcdonalds, I don’t think I can pass up the opportunity to get to chill with them uninterrupted for 10 hours. I just wanna get to know Nine and talk about humanity and stuff and it’d be real nice.

That leaves getting trained to work fast food by Caduceus because I’m sorry Jon but I do not want you in a position of authority over me. I feel like working with Caduceus would do a good deal to help with the anxiety I usually feel working customer service and also I want to see him give unsolicited yet uncannily helpful life advice to random strangers including myself pls i want to know what Cad would think of me

Which leaves Jon for randomly assigned lab partner. I mean c’mon the boy’s a nerd! And lab partners would be the least awkward way to get acquainted. Just a couple hours a day over the course of a semester. Plus it would be really helpful if he could Know how the hell lab reports are supposed to be formatted I could never get that right.
