Pokémon World Geography and Real World Geography: Not The Same

It’s a common idea that the geography of the Pokémon world reflects that of the real world, and I would not begrudge anyone for thinking so (especially given the series’s origins). However, I’ve found that fewer people than I expected are aware that it actually doesn’t line up and that it hasn’t for at least ten years– the evidence is not compiled in one easily accessible place, making it often hard to explain why it does not match up.

This is, unfortunately, not a full map of the Pokémon world. Such a thing would be a big undertaking, and I do not believe we have enough evidence to completely coherently construct one as of now. If people are interested in my take, let me know!

As with my prior posts, direct main-game quotes will be in orange, and quotes from supplementary media like demos and spin-off games will be in green.

This is going to go in order of most damning to least damning. Starting with:

Kalos & Hoenn

This is probably the most famous example. Within Pokémon X & Y, you can find Swimmer Kieran at Azure Bay, who says that he “swam all the way here from the oceans of Hoenn” upon being encountered.

In addition, the map description for Hoenn’s Route 108 states that “People come swimming from as far away as the Kalos region to see the site of Sea Mauville.”

One more piece of media reiterates this: the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Special Demo Version. While the two demos are not canon, as seen by their having nonstandard takes on the settings of both ORAS and SM, including an entirely otherwise nonexistent area in SM, different protagonist names, and the like, they still likely reflect the actual nature of the setting. Within the ORAS demo, which is set in Mossdeep City, you can meet a Swimmer who leaves for Kalos, telling two other swimmers that he’ll “swim back to Kalos on my own.”

Overall, all three of these paint the picture that swimming between Hoenn and Kalos is possible and, in the case of the Route 108 description, not uncommon. In real life, though, the distance between France (the basis for Kalos) and Kyushu (the basis for Hoenn) is approximately 9600 kilometers / 6000 miles in a straight line, not even accounting for water. The longest recorded human swim, even accounting for multi-segment swims, is only 168.3 kilometers, only about 1.7% of the necessary distance. These two areas being at their real-life inspirations’ distances is, frankly, infeasible. This is the most damning piece of evidence, but it’s worth bringing up some more minor discrepancies.

“The East”

Throughout the various games, there have been occasional mentions of an eastern region, such as in the story of the Treasures of Ruin. However, the relevant case here is in the Pokédex entries for Arcanine. In older dex entries, Arcanine was said to be revered in China. In line with modern Pokémon cementing itself as not being in the real world, however, that specific dex entry did not return at all after HeartGold until Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee, which rewrote it to be in line with modern lore (much as it did for other bits in Kanto such as Surge’s tagline): 

“A legendary Pokémon in the East. Many people are charmed by the grace and beauty of its running.” 

However, Kanto is based on Japan, which China is notably west of. Even the original Japanese text refers to this eastern region as “the Orient”, a term that literally means “east”, also historically used in China to describe Japan. Therefore, this unseen Chinese-based region from Arcanine and the Treasures of Ruin’s lore has to be east of the Japan-based Kanto and Johto, despite that not matching real life at all. (Thanks to @kiskeym on Twitter / @boh.nonso on Medium for the Japanese translation and for explaining some of the nuances for me!)

Hoenn, Galar

Hoenn is based on Kyushu and Galar is based on the United Kingdom. However, as many people know, both of these regions are rotated compared to their real-life counterparts. Hoenn is rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise, so real-life north equates to Hoenn’s west, while Galar is rotated 180 degrees, so real-life north equates to Galar’s south. If their real-world geography applied, they would be at their proper orientations. (We know that north is up in both Hoenn and Galar from various pieces of dialogue and world design, such as the four sisters in Mauville City and the names of the Wild Area’s lakes).

Paldea & Unova & Kitakami

Next up is the trio of regions featured in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. In-game, the player takes plane flights between the three of them, with the time shifting according to each region’s timezone. (It’s not just the time of the plane flight, which is abstracted away, as the in-game map shows the time correctly regardless of which region the player is in.)

In-game, Kitakami is 18 real-life minutes ahead of Paldea, and Unova is 18 minutes behind Paldea (Source). The day/night cycle in-game is 72 minutes long, thus making 18 minutes equivalent to six hours in-universe. 

In real life, Spain is in the UTC+1 timezone, while Portugal is in the UTC+0, making up Paldea. New York City, the basis for Unova, is in UTC-5, which does match up with Spain, which represents the majority of Paldea. However, the issues come with Kitakami, which is based on the real-life region of Kitakami in Japan. All of Japan falls into the UTC+9 timezone, putting it eight hours ahead of Paldea instead of six. This is, ultimately, a relatively minor discrepancy, but it is still a discrepancy.

Fiore & Almia & Oblivia

Lastly, I’d like to delve into the spinoffs a little bit. The three regions of the Pokémon Ranger series, Fiore, Almia, and Oblivia, are all based on real regions of Japan– the Okoyama/Hyogo Prefectures, Oshima Peninsula, and Oki Islands respectively.

However, a girl in Cocona Village in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs says that “This Oblivia region is very far south relative to both the Fiore and Almia regions.”. Looking at the real-life inspiration map, this does not make sense– the Oke Islands are north of Okoyama/Hyogo and southwest of Oshima, neither of which I’d describe as “very far south”. In addition, Oblivia is quite tropical, unlike Fiore and Almia.

Conclusion

Overall, there are quite a few pieces of evidence that Pokémon geography does not line up with real-world geography. Kalos to Hoenn being a swimmable distance is by far the most damning, but that doesn’t mean that there’s a dearth of other evidence. Regardless, I hope this was informative! He had it marked down on his calendar.

It was their 10 year wedding anniversary.

And this is the most excited Maxie had ever been in YEARS.

It was disappointing though, he couldn’t take the day off from work to be with the love of his life, but he was certain that Archie had planned something wonderful for them before he left for work.

He sat up, but saw that his husband wasn’t in bed with him. Ideas flooded through his mind. Was he going to go downstairs to find that Archie had made an amazing breakfast for him? Who knows? He had already planned a wonderful present for him. Excitedly, he emerged from bed and threw his clothes on, then headed down the stairs.

When he stepped into the kitchen, he saw his husband sitting at the table with a bowl of cereal in his hands.

��Morning, love.” He smiles.

The redhead seemed a bit confused and disappointed. “Good morning, dear. Is.. there something you want to tell me this morning?”

He saw Archie’s confused look. “Huh? Nothing I can’t think of. Why?”

“Dear god, he forgot.” Maxie thought. He cleared his throat. “You know what today is, right?” He asked, being a little more blunt this time, and hoping that Archie was just playing with him.

“Mmm.. it’s Friday?” Archie chuckled.

Tears almost started to prick the corners of Maxie’s eyes. “Y-yes, it’s Friday. N-Never mind. Forget I asked.” He walked over to the fridge, grabbed a protein shake, then started heading for the door. “I’ll be home later.”

“Okay, sweetheart. I love ye!”

“Yeah.. love you too.” He glumly shut the door and began walking. He finally let the tears flow.

Yes, Archie can be forgetful at times, but Maxie had never counted on his husband forgetting their 10th wedding anniversary. He had to have been toying with him. He had to of! He let these thoughts race through his head as he made his way to work.

Meanwhile Archie was still sitting in the kitchen. He did sense how upset Maxie seemed, and felt bad about the act he put on. He could tell he was about to cry.

But Archie did not forget. In fact, he was planning something extraordinary for his husband. For both of them. Hopefully Maxie would forgive him by the time the surprise was over.

He couldn’t get the smile off of his face. He started making a few calls, then began his plan for the evening ahead.

Back with Maxie, the poor man was depressed the rest of the morning and all afternoon. He could barely concentrate on his work. Courtney and Tabitha would clearly tell that something was wrong, but they didn’t want to make his mood worse.

Maxie didn’t know how to feel. Angry? Upset? Confused? All 3?? He couldn’t understand why the man he’s been married to for 10 whole years had forgotten one of their most important anniversaries. Even his Pokemon were starting to get worried about him. He had assured everyone that he was fine, but he was easy to read.

Once he was finally finished, he left his office and headed back home. Once he stood in front of the door, he was hoping, praying that Archie really didn’t forget.

He opened the door, and saw that the house was dim. Archie was lying on the couch waiting for him.

“Hey, Max. How was your day, baby?”

“It was fine.” He grumbled.

Before Maxie could slip his shoes off, Archie stopped him. “Wait, Max. I’m a little tired from working today, and I don’t think I can cook tonight. Would you like to.. go out?”

He didn’t suspect a thing. “Sure. Just.. let me change.”

Archie’s stomach dropped. Perhaps he should’ve let Maxie know that he at least didn’t forget. He could tell that he was so upset, and didn’t blame him for being short with him. But he’s hoping tonight, he could make it up to him.

They both stepped into the car, and Archie drove them nearby a steep hill in Mossdeep city.

“Um, Archie.. this doesn’t look like a restaurant to me. What’s going on?”

Poor thing, he was still clueless.

Archie smirks and parks the car. “C’mon, I wanted to show ye somethin’ first!”

Hesitantly, Maxie stepped out of the car and follows Archie up to the top. He gasps, seeing the cutest little picnic setup he’d ever seen.

“A-Archie..”

Archie sat down on the blanket laid out and picked up an acoustic guitar.

He began singing. “When I first saw ye, I saw love~ and the first time you touched me, I felt love~ and after all this time, yer still the one I love, mmm~”

The redhead’s eyes watered, until the tears were flowing.

“Looks like we made it, look how far we’ve come, my baby~ We mighta took the wrong way, we knew we’d get there someday~”

“Oh, Archie~”

“They said, ‘I bet they’ll never make it’, but just look at us holding on, we’re still together, still going strong, mm~ Yer still the one I run to, the one that I belong to, yer still the one I want for life~ yer still the one that I love, the only one I dream of~ yer still the one I kiss goodnight~”

His husband just sat next to him and cried. He was so happy.

“Ain’t nothin’ better, we beat the odds together, I’m glad we didn’t listen, look at what we would be missin’~”

He sang the chorus once more beautifully.

“I’m so glad we made it, look how far we’ve come, my baby~”

He stops, puts down the guitar, then pulls a sobbing Maxie close to his chest.

“Shhh, Shh shh.. don’t cry, my love.” He removes his glasses and kisses his temple. “Happy anniversary, darling.. *kiss* I should’ve never pretended to forget our anniversary, Max… I just didn’t want ye finding out the surprise. I’m so sorry I upset ye.. please forgive me.”

Maxie lifts his head up, wiping away his tears, holds Archie’s face, and presses his lips against Archie’s.

“Mm? Mmm~”

“I love you, so much.”

“I love ye too, baby.”

When the kiss was over, they started eating. Archie was excited for what was coming next.

Soon, they both saw glittering meteorites in the sky. Archie saw Maxie’s eyes light up at the sight, and smiled.

“I made sure we’d be here for the meteor shower tonight~”

“It’s absolutely beautiful.”

“Mm hmm~ and so are ye, my lovely lava man~ C’mere~”

*blush*

He pulls Maxie close to his side, and they watch the rest of the meteor shower. Afterwards, Archie drives them both home. Once he opens the front door, Maxie makes him sit on the couch.

“You wait here. I’m going to get YOUR present ready~” He purrs, kissing his cheek.

This made Archie’s face turn red. This was such a perfect evening for them both, and now, it was going to be even better.

After about 15 minutes, Maxie came behind his husband, who was still waiting, and covered his eyes with his hands.

“Ohoho~ so it’s one of those kinds of surprises, eh?” Archie chuckles, standing up. “Alright, I’ll keep my eyes closed~”

Maxie just laughs and leads him upstairs to their bedroom. Once they’re at the doorstep, they stop.

“Are you ready?”

“Mmhmm~”

“Alright, open your eyes.”

Archie does so, and he sees their whole room covered in rose petals, candles lit around the room, and his husband already in his night clothes.

“Oh my…” Archie exclaimed. “Wow, babe… this- this is..”

He leans into his chest. “All for us~” He giggles, leading him to the bed. “Let me show you how much I love YOU~”

“Hold on, lemme change first, baby.”

Archie never changed so fast in his life. Can anyone blame him? Cuddling with his husband, on their anniversary, surrounded by candles and rose petals?? It’s romantic!

He came back, and practically ran to the bed, embracing Maxie into his arms. “This is amazing, Max~ I love ye~ *kiss*”

“I’m glad you love it, darling. I love you too. I was worried that it wouldn’t be good enough-“

“-Absolutely not! There’s nothing I love more than to be lying here.. with ye.”

The redhead smiles and starts kissing him around his collarbone and neck.

“Hehehehe~ Maaaaax~” Archie snickered, squirming in his grasp.

“Mmmm? *kiss* What’s the matter, dear?” He teases, continuing his kisses. He knew what he was doing.

“N-nohohohothing, it’s just- pffff- y-yer kihihisses- gahahahahahahah!!”

He couldn’t finish his sentence because the redhead decided to tickle his belly.

“What was that, honey? I couldn’t hear you~”

“B-Bahahabe, cuhuhuhut it ohuhuhuhut! Ahahahah- yehehehe- *snort* ye know Ihihihi’m ticklish!”

“Ohhh~ so I see~” He smirks, tickling faster. “That’s what I was missing on this perfect day~ your laughter~”

“AHAHAHAH-! OHOHOKAHAHAY- YEHEHE WANNA PLAY LIHIHIHIKE THAT? FIHIHIHNE!”

He shoots his arms out and begins tickling Maxie’s ribs.

“GAH-! Ahahahahahah-! Nohohoho!! Nahahahaht the rihihihihibs!! *snort* Ahahaharchie, stahahahahahp!”

He just grins and nuzzles his beard into his neck, kissing him while he continues to tickle his ribs. “Hehe! Ye started it! Ye ruined the romantic moment by tickling me! *nuzzle*”

“Nahahahahohoht thehehehe beheheheard-! Not thehehehehehe beheheheheheard- ahahahahah-! *snort* Okahahay okahahahay!! Ihihihihi suhuhuhurendeheheheher!” He squealed.

Archie chuckles and kisses his check after he stops his nuzzles and tickles. “Yer so cute.”

“Hehe.. heheh…” The redhead wipes the mirthful tears off his face and hugs his husband. “Ihihihi love you, you big dork.”

“Awww, I love ye too, Maxie. *kiss* Happy anniversary, baby. Here’s to 10 more years of ye putting up with my bullshit~”

“Oh, you shush~” Maxie scoffs, wrapping his arms around him. “You know well by now, my darling… that I love you and your bullshit. Now, kiss me.”

Archie growls playfully and returns the kiss, cuddling the rest of the night away with the love of his life, until they both fall asleep. This was an anniversary neither of them could ever forget.

Director Urushida

Director of Devon Corporation's Pharmaceutical Research Department, 46 years old.

This is his public persona, but secretly, he is plotting evil schemes using Pokemon.

He has manipulated President Mukuge into providing funds to create the underground organization "Tunnel Gang."

He has also infiltrated his subordinates from the Tunnel Gang into the company as his assistants.

Captain Kusonoki

The leader of the pirate group "Marine Gang" (tentative name) that controls the western sea, 38 years old.

However, in reality, he is a protector of Pokemon, trying to defend them from the tunnel gang.

He is misunderstood as a kidnapper because he protects endangered Pokemon from the Tunnel Gang and others.

He plans to release the Pokemon he has gathered using a rocket being constructed on Tokusane City's island.

He is also the gym leader of Neirin city.

The 12 Generals (tentative name)

12 trainers who resonate with Captain Kusonoki's noble cause and act alongside him.

So all that being said this contextualizes a few things. Why Devon even exists, why the last gym is water type, why Mossdeep has a space center.

I've been using this map as my imagined visual of the Japanese Pokemon regions. (Kitakami is an actual real world city located south of "Sinnoh" aka Hokkaido! Actually there's a whole mountain range in that area known as the Kitakami Mountains)

Mossdeep City, the location of the Space Center is actually 1:1 where Japan's Space Center is, not kidding. A bit weird, right? While in the games, we think as Mossdeep being East of Mt. Chimney, but it's actually South of it when oriented the correct way.

Whether regions do make up an entire country when put together is not confirmed, there might not be a typical government that we see IRL, but regions that are very close to one another probably have unity in very similar cultural identities.

Anabel in my verse is Japanese, and I'm wondering about the the idea that she is Kanto born and her parents have business HQs in Kanto (Celadon City is where Tokyo City should be! Gosh, but every city in Kanto looks so small even in remakes! They need to fix this because Celadon is LITERALLY TOKYO i should know i went there) -- and while Anabel is Kanto born, she spent the majority of her life in Hoenn or at least near Hoenn with her grandparents/extended family.

Looker in my verse is European, but he speaks in a distinctly American accent... Wondering if perhaps he was born in a region equivalent to Germany or whatnot and spent a lot of time acclimating to America? Or he's only ever grown up European and he just developed an American accent for hiding identity purposes... Also! Kalos does have two regions! North and South. The mountains that border Paldea are primarily belonging to Southern Kalos. (Just wait until Legends Z-A destroys this with a random line of dialogue or random map asset.)

EDIT: The Legendary Beasts and the Kanto Birds are migratory and have been spotted all over the place! It's interesting to note that Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres go north as Professor Oak said "it is part of their migration," possibly implying they are a Japanese species. Legendary Beasts can appear in Kanto! (Don't hunt for them, FRLG Beasts have three IVs set to 0 due to a glitch they're practically useless) and additionally, Regirock/Regice/Registeel seem to have units in Sinnoh, though another Regigigas can be encountered in Hoenn. Perhaps Wherever there is a Regigigas present, there will be Regi Pokemon somewhere buried in the area?

Onto the final quarter and we've got a couple of blue Balls to choose between!

The Jet Ball is the final Hisuian Ball in the contest, and it's a good one! It has one of the most intricate designs of any Ball, and the wings it are very fitting indeed for how far this Ball flies when it's thrown! Used for catching those Pokémon in Hisui that fly far out of reach for normal Balls, and when it does it has a very respectable 2.75x catch modifier- tied for the highest catch modifier available in Legends Arceus. Otherwise, it still has a 2x modifier, the third highest modifier in Hisui for regular Balls. A unique Ball in design and function, will it fly to Round 2?

The Net Ball used to be a specialty of Mossdeep City, and it makes sense for an island city to make a Ball so well suited to the water! As you'd expect, the Net Ball is designed for Water and Bug Types, and it's very good at what it does. It has a 3.5x catch multiplier on any Pokémon of those types, buffed from 3x in Generations 3 to 6- and this accounts for a little under 25% of all Pokémon! For the remaining 3/4, it has the standard 1x, but can you complain when it has such a wide selection of Pokémon available to catch with such a solid multiplier?
