Lawrence Fine Arts is pleased to offer this iconic work, “Four Dancers,” by American master Moses Soyer, c.1930s. Soyer, along with twin brother Raphael, and younger brother Isaac painted one the Social Realist style. Even with the advent of Abstract Expressionism, he remained true to figuration and the Eutopean artistic tradition exemplified by Rembrandt, Corot, Courbet, Degas and Eakins. He would go on to become, according To one Museum Director, “unquestionably one of the most important figurative painters of this century (20th century)”. Early on Soyer studied with Robert Henri and Bellows, members of the Ashcan School. As America emerged from the Great Depression, his work changed and his paintings became imbued with a deeply felt, higher romanticism. This work comes from that period. One critic explained that Soyer portrayed “not only the physical likeness of his subjects but also something of their inner lives.” His work can be found in the collections of the Whitney, MOMA, MET, Brooklyn Museum, Phillips Collection, Hirshorn Museum and many others. We dedicate this Caturday to Bright Eyes the cat.
Painter Moses Soyer (1899–1974) showed great affection for his only son, David, in many illustrated letters. This letter is written from the perspective of the family cat, Bright Eyes. “I certainly have grown bigger—haven’t you?” writes the handsome feline.
This letter is currently on view in our exhibit 'Before Internet Cats' http://s.si.edu/2o7sJWN

"Dressing" by Moses Soyer. We know of few painters who can seem to capture the psychological reality of their subjects the same way that Soyer does. #mosessoyer #renoir #bonnard #realism #socialrealism #artoftheday #paintingoftheday #modernart #fineart #oilpainting #bestpic #picoftheday
