Gingerbread and Boxing Day!
DECEMBER POSITIVITY MEME
gingerbread: tag someone who is dedicated to their muse
okay, i can sort of personally attest to the fact that @intoxicatiing has been playing ruby for about . . . 4 billion years, something roughly in that area?? and never have i seen and loved such a thought out and wonderfully written muse. way back in the olden days when i was in reeā€™s rp group, ruby was one of my favourite characters, and that has honestly not changed, there is so much dedication put towards her history and characterization and the complexities of her emotions, and iā€™m still a little in awe of how good it all is. ruby is one of my favs because ree makes her one of my favs, and i honestly am so in love.
boxing day: tag someone whose writing style you love
okay i cannot talk about amazing writing styles without talking about @moscowsdragon bc their writing is so,,,, good that i dont even know how to reply sometimes. like what magic makes it possible for lexi to make andrei and marya getting drunk on badly flavoured vodka sound so lovely and put together, i donā€™t know, but it is so amazing. im a little lost for words trying to describe it honestly, just. itā€™s so lovely

Ā  Ā  dazed and confused , the room seems to spin , shapes and colors blurring into an intelligible mess. hand pressed to her head , marya struggles to find the face attached to the voice. spotting the blurry figure , apuzzled look passes over her features , which quickly morphs into one of horror and deep sorrow. Ā  Ā ā› Ā  oksana , is that you? Ā  Ā āœ Ā  Ā tears spring to her eyes , overjoyed and terrified at the possibility that her dearest sister was once again returned to her. terrified , that the sight of such a familiar face meant she had passed on as well.

my opinion on;
character in general: marya d is a hoot. sheā€™s just so blunt and aggressive and i lived for all the times she would show up in war and peace because i just knew something great was going to happen.how they play them: incredibly well. this marya tackles things head-on with guts and wry wit, but she also manages to be vulnerable at the same time and that makes her very easy to love.the mun: amazing. you know when you can just tell someone is a good person? i get that vibe with lexi. sheā€™s someone you can trust. if i was in a burning building iā€™d want lexi to be one of the firefighters.
do i:
rp with them:yes, itā€™s been known to happen! i think we had 3 threads going at the same time at one point. but iā€™d love to do it more consistently! marya and marya have some interesting interactions.want to rp with them:Ā  anytime.
what is my;
overall opinion: iā€™ve had at least one conversation with sarah about how great lexi is and how well she plays marya.

ā€œNO, I donā€™t think so.ā€œ pierre took her by the shoulders (with his big, big hands) and guided her back down onto the couch.Ā ā€œyouā€™re just going to S I TĀ for a moment. I think youā€™ve had ONE TOO MANYĀ glasses of wine, my dear masha.ā€œ after a teasing smile, he took her wine glass from her hand, unable to find another cup in his study, and DOWNED the remainder of the alcohol in it, then filled it with water and eased it back into her hand.Ā ā€œtake small sips, my friend, and let me know if youā€™re going to be sick.ā€œ

@moscowsdragon
glancing up from her knitting , marya sighs at the sight of the girl before her. but it is not an act of annoyance as in the past ā€” for now the action is accompanied by a sympathetic quirk of her lips , pulled down into an expression of sympathy. the past day had been terrible for both. with natasha and her sudden illness , they had been running ragged ; calling for the doctor and ensuring their beloved goddaughter and cousin would survive her ordeal.
she silently pats the seat next to her , offering sonya a place to sit. though the girl had never been her favorite , marya knew they both could use a touch of consolation. ā› Ā  Ā i wish i could speak words of comfort , but even i do not know what fate holds for our natasha. all we can do is wait , and pray. and try to get some sleep, hm? Ā  Ā āœ
Sonya hesitates, wondering if there is any meaning behind the gesture before she takes the seat beside Marya. She wonders if it is any use, asking the older woman for words of comfort, but then Marya speaks ahead of her, as if reading her mind.Ā
ā€œI suppose so,ā€ she said, folding her hands in her lap, wishing she had something to do, instead of sit and wait, but she had never been good at knitting, and without Natasha, was there any point in touching the harpsichord?Ā
ā€œMarya,ā€ she ventured, her voice small,Ā ā€œdo you think I did the right thing, thwarting the elopement?ā€

šŸ”„ + the fandom's interpretation of andrei
send Ā šŸ”„ + a topic for an unpopular opinion ( accepting )
where do i even fucking begin? okay, there are a lot of not so good interpretations of andrei through the great comet fandom ( which is what iā€™m gonna focus on, the war and peace book fandom is pretty good ) and so i think my unpopular opinion on them is that they justā€¦ exist at all, tbh. like, the source material ( literally just one song ) is not exactly great at portraying the depths of andrei, i get that, but there are some ways that itā€™s taken that are totally off the mark and it really bothers me. iā€™m gonna put the general things here and you can read more if you want to, because i have a lot to say about a few particular things: first, andrei is not a villain, second, andrei had every right to refuse to forgive natasha and this should not be seen as a malicious action on his part ( because it fucking isnā€™t ), and third, ( in a bit of a different direction ) andrei and natasha would not have had a good marriage. explanations under the cut.
andrei is not a villain. heā€™s not. itā€™s just not a thing, heā€™s not a villainous character and when heā€™s malicious itā€™s because heā€™s trying to contain a very deep grief through repression, and because he grew up in a household where expressing emotions was not okay ( especially for andrei, who was being molded by his father into a very traditional and unhealthy image of masculinity ), heĀ ā€˜s trying to suppress those emotions. the way he knows how to do that? by being cold and very standoffish, and then by just completely refusing to talk about it.
when pierre comes to see andrei, andrei refused to see him at first, and is engaged in a debate about politics. while he and pierre talk, andrei is reserved and pretty much just pushes away every emotional question. he says he canā€™t forgive her, and thatā€™s it, thatā€™s the end of the story, he doesnā€™t want to talk about it, and the way he expresses it is almost forceful because thatā€™s the person heā€™s been told to be by traditional russian society ( via his father ). when he tells pierre to go and to never speak to him of the matter again, itā€™s about avoiding questions. and after that, youā€™ll note, he and pierre relationship as friends is essentially over, because andrei has just buried himself so deep in repression and this desire for revenge against anatole ( to defend honor and because heā€™s understandably upset ) that friendship wonā€™t do anything. andrei self isolates, but it is NOT out of a desire to be malicious or evil. itā€™s just a thing that he does, that is unhealthy and comes off kind of badly when you donā€™t have the whole context of the rest of his reaction.
further, and thereā€™s a post out there somewhere about this but iā€™m not going to dig it up, when heĀ ā€œ smiles coldly [and] maliciously ā€ itā€™s not because heā€™s happy about hearing natashaā€™s in bad shape - he most certainly is not. rather, heā€™s trying to push thing away, and again it comes off as kind of horrible, even if that is in no way his intention. you gotta remember, andrei is not very adequate socially, heā€™s not good at these emotional cues, and so sometimes the right expression just wonā€™t translate. expressing grief with a sort of pained smile is one such miscalculation, in my opinion, and it shouldnā€™t be taken as an expression of actual and intentional malice toward natasha.
andrei had every right to refuse to forgive natasha and this should not be seen as a malicious action on his part. my mom kind of put this in perspective for me when i told her about great comet, and it basically goes like this: andrei doesnā€™t have to forgive natasha, because even though itā€™s sad, and even though we sympathize with natasha and know she made a mistake and was definitely manipulated in some degree by anatole, she still fucking cheated on him. as far as andrei knows, she had every intention of going through with her elopement and she refused him very much on her own volition. the complexities of those actions are known to us, but they are not known to andrei, and again. she cheated on him, no matter the motivation behind it, and so he has every right not to forgive her because of that.
also important is that in refusing her, andrei is not acting maliciously ( imagine me, having to clarify this again and again ) against natasha, but acting in accordance with his own grief, and with the sense of betrayal thatā€™s come with her refusing him. no matter the circumstances of their relation from his perspective, which i will get in to in the next section, what she did hurt him a lot, and he has every right to respond to that pain with not wanting to forgive her immediately and reconcile their relationship. take what happened and put it in another story, and weā€™d all be agreeing with andrei, not having this discussion about the ethics of refusing to reconcile your betrothal with someone who very much intended to refuse you for another man despite having already promised marriage.Ā
( all of you who made it this far: thanks for putting up with me, and be warned that this next one is the unpopular opinion that is probably the most controversial. )
andrei and natasha would not have had a good marriage. listen, i know itā€™s nice to think about them living in a happy marriage with each other and all of their problems being solved, but it wouldnā€™t work out. whether you count in the anatole drama or not, they just wouldnā€™t have been able to sustain happiness together. there are reasons on both sides for this, but this unpopular opinion is about andrei, so iā€™m going to focus on why he wouldnā€™t have been happy marrying natasha. thatā€™s not to say they did not love each other: andrei loves natasha lot, even after she refuses him, and he is indeed very invested in her happiness and would do a lot of things for her. he loves her unquestionably, but that does not necessarily make up the basis of a happy marriage when there are other factors at play. so here we go;
exhibit a: before he leaves, when he asks for her hand and when she says yes, he already suddenly loses a lot of the hope that he has. like, she says yes, and he suddenly clues into her faults and starts to forget that very temporary bout of happiness he has after otradnoe. itā€™s not natashaā€™s fault, itā€™s just who andrei is: he has a disillusionment deeply ingrained in him, and the moment he gets too close, the moment he can lift the veil of ignorance, heā€™s going to find faults and its going to make him unhappy, and itā€™s a pervasive problem: much earlier on, he says to pierre that he canā€™t sleep because he has all these intellectual burdens, and that applies just as much to marriage.
this is because andrei is not so cool with the idea of marriage itself. there are some sexist reasons ( which i do not condone and completely downplay here, because tolstoy was a dick and iā€™m not making that a part of my portrayal ) and more importantly here, there are some objections to theĀ ā€œ consequences ā€ of marriage that andrei has. namely, a life that is heavily focused on inaction and society, one wherein people talk about political affairs and military operations as though theyā€™re games, when it fact theyā€™re something he sees as an enormous tragedy and failing of mankind, that should not be taken likely. he feels useless when heā€™s married ( see: his very bad marriage to lise ) and marrying natasha, regardless of love, wouldnā€™t change that.
exhibit b: andrei and natasha are fundamentally different people that, though in the early stages of their relationship, might be okay, would not have led to a long term happiness between them. andrei has a very cynical view of the world and of other people, he does not enjoy things in society, and he is intensely intellectual and judgmental and harsh to those who cannot necessarily keep up with that intellect. natasha is wonderful, and i love her, but she and andrei couldnā€™t have kept their happiness up for long because andrei would inevitable become disillusioned with her, and then likely get bored and end up miserable again. not because he would fall out of love, but just because theyā€™re not exactly that compatible. andrei needs someone in the long term who can not only offset his cynicism, but can also fight against it, and who also has at least enough similar interests that theyā€™ll never lack for intellectual conversation. because, after all, andrei does not do talk about emotions and other people very well, he needs that political and intellectual side as well, and for all the things she does have, natasha doesnā€™t really have that.
thereā€™s also the thing about natasha being very young and still quite inexperienced whereas andrei has had a lot of very terrible experiences and some difficult trauma from them, and the fact that they cannot seem to keep up their relationship with separation, which is something that would have happened a lot in their marriage - whether he wanted it or not, andrei would have been going away frequently. so, while thereā€™s a lot of points for their relationship, like that love and affection, it doesnā€™t exactly lend itself to something long term and sustainable.
tl:dr: their marriage would have been a bit of a mess, and probably would have caused them both unhappiness even if they continued to love each other.
anyway, i guess i should conclude that long, completely unedited rant with a saying that if you have a different opinion, thatā€™s fine, this is just the interpretation that i take from having read the book. if you want to hear more anger ranting about andrei, i actually do have more opinions, so send me that ask with the same topic and i will continue, i promise. otherwise, um, thanks for putting up with me and my bitterness.

continued from @moscowsdragonā€‹
Marya had watched the other woman in concern, wanting to judge how badly she was injured but hesitant to actually ask, or to reach out and touch her. The terrible RA of Moscow had definitely earned her title and a childish part of her was SLIGHTLY concerned that she would bite her head off if she tried.
She instinctively flinched at the older womanā€™s words (never a fan of harsh tones), but though Masha could be considered a frazzled, anxious mess a lot of the time, years of experience in dealing with her father left her seemingly CALM when dealing with these types of situations.
ā€œItā€™s alright,ā€ she said. ā€œJust stay still.ā€
After retrieving her backpack, Masha took her cold water bottle and offered it a little shyly. ā€œIt might not be ice, but..I think it will help.ā€

@moscowsdragon || group verse starter call
Tumblr media
ā€œI understand having a FIERY TEMPER, of course, but isnā€™t this just a touch unreasonable?ā€ Anatoleā€™s hands are raised in that universal posture of surrender and of innocence, but otherwise he does not seem terribly daunted by Marya Dmitrievna. She can hurt him, absolutely, but beyond some nasty burns he has little to fear from her so long as she does notĀ send for a priest.Ā ā€œCome, come! Letā€™s not make this personal. It could have been any young lady, not just yours. Itā€™s a necessity, after all.ā€

You know, I might make that literature multi after all. I had a character I wanted to write with @moscowsdragon, I think I told them and followed them from his blog, but Iā€™m never online over there. I could stick him on my literature multi along with those other book characters I told @whambamthxnkyoumaam I was doing and then never did. Iā€™m so tempted now that I think of them, damn it.

@moscowsdragon // ā„ļø winter starters ā„ļø
the bottle tilts back, and the smallest sip is enough to give andrei a sense of their picked poison for the evening ---- and enough to allow him to decide he doesnā€™t like it. a pained expression accompanies his swallowing the stuff down, and after wiping the lip of the bottle with his sleeve, he holds it before him to see what exactly theyā€™re drinking.Ā ā€œ is this marshmallow vodka? ā€ andrei throws a glance at marya, one eyebrow raised,Ā ā€œ why did you buy this? ā€ and a better question: ā€œ why does it even exist? ā€
there are a lot of reasons for andrei to hate the holidays, and products like this are among them.

@moscowsdragon liked for a starter and someone has been driven from their home.
It was barely dawn and the world was BURNING. Masha was unsure of how long sheā€™d been hiding in the church for, and had been praying for those she knew to have made it out of the city when she spotted a familiar figure. ā€œMarya Dmitrievna!ā€ Masha made her way over to the older woman, attempting to hide her surprise. She had heard that the terrible dragon had been FORCED out of her home, but hadnā€™t actually expected to see her.
ā€œ..Iā€™m sorry about what happened.ā€ Not usually one to act so impulsively, the princess found herself hugging Marya all the same. And then, maybe because she was scared and tired of hiding it, she continued:Ā  ā€œNow Moscow is burning and- do you think weā€™ll live through this?ā€
