Short Story Tournament - S2
TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT TWO-TONGUED JEREMY by Theodore McCombs (2018) (link) - tw: child abuse, manipulation, suicide, homophobia, revenge porn
His name was Two-Tongued Jeremy; he was a monitor lizard with a forked tongue, thick glasses, and a wild, wagging smile meant to convince children that learning could be fun, too. He came highly rated. He updated automatically. There were no red flags. There was no warning.
MORRIGAN IN THE SUNGLARE by Seth Dickinson (2014) (link) - tw: war, death
Like weaponized poetry, except that deep down your poem always says "we have to live. They have to die."

people who really love the short story morrigan in the sunglare would probably go insane about ange and AK-12's relationship in girls' frontline. and also vice versa...
though admittedly the people already into GFL/ange and AK-12 are probably the easier sell here since it's telling them to read a 6,290 word short story vs. one fucking million words of girls' frontline. alas!

Haven’t done a book haul post in a while. Got these over the last couple weeks and mostly for $1-$3 each.
I still don’t have Honor Harrington #1 to start but also I really just am running out of things to collect and buying pretty much anything I recognize vaguely if it is only $1, you know?
I am collecting them as much for the stories as the old school covers cuz I love the beat up and loved aesthetic with the goofy fun art.
I got the Mil-SF antho cuz it has Seth Dickinson’s Morrigan in the Sunglare story and I found it by chance and have been meaning to read it. Harrington I am reading cuz my gf’s dad loves it and it’s a good thing for us to Bond Over. Also I know there is some lesbian retelling/fanfic on the interwebs somewhere.
Uhh that’s really it. I’m not sure if Zahn and Novik are my type of books but enough people rec them that it’s worth the shot and also the covers are good. I still kinda want to read Zahn’s original Thrawn triology but like, when will I ever find the time.
Anyway books.

It’s your secret Santa again! So I’ve actually stumbled upon an idea I really like. (I am keeping this secret of course, no spoilers!) It’s incredibly rare (read: unheard of) that a fully fledged idea plops itself into my mind, so I’m grateful for that. More questions will develop for you as it goes on and I need a push in some direction or other.
I’ve been reading more recently to try and feel out my own voice. I’m curious, what are some of your favorite authors/books/stories?
Hi again!! Aw that’s so exciting I love when ideas just Appear fully-formed and ready to go :) and of course feel free to ask me whatever you need down the road!
And ooh I have a lot of “favorites” but here are some off the top of my head. When it comes to fantasy, two of my favorite authors are Tamora Pierce and Sharon Shinn--they have such a natural, grounded way of writing fantasy, and their worlds have so many pockets of coziness and kindness and safety while also being full of adventure and mystery. I also love Diana Wynne Jones, she’s so funny and so wise, and I adore how she writes magic as a messy thing where you can’t know all the rules. Also Terry Pratchett is just the GOAT, I feel like I miss him every day of my life.
Contemporary is a little harder because I don’t read a lot of contemporary adult fiction; but my favorite contemporary author is Mary HK Choi, whose books I think fall more under YA/new adult. She’s so sharply observant and hilarious, and her characters’ internal monologue is always so unique. If you’re looking for books that have really strong character voices, I highly recommend her work (Emergency Contact is I think my favorite book of hers).
Romances I’ve enjoyed in recent years are How to Be A Normal Person by TJ Klune, and Red White and Royal Blue by Casey Mcquiston; both of those books read a lot like fanfiction in the best possible way, and they’re queer as hell and just great cheer-up reads.
I feel like “original fiction on AO3″ deserves its own special mention, because Swan Song by earlgreytea68 and the Shivadhverse by copperbadge are two of the universes I’ve loved in recent years and found myself revisiting multiple times. They’re great comfort reads for me and I am so fond of all the characters in them.
I don’t have a single favorite book, but I think A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki is a very strong contender.
Also, these are some of my favorite short stories and novellas that I wind up recommending to pretty much everybody, so if you’re looking for more things to read I will happily share them with you: “Windrose in Scarlet” by Isabel Yap, “The Tea Master and the Detective” by Aliette de Bodard, “Morrigan in the Sunglare” by Seth Dickinson.
This was such a long answer but I hope this helped (?)! Thank you again for reaching out :)

morrigan in the sunglare fascinates me. its a really interesting choice to lean into the earth as pacifist - this might be the first short story i've read that's made me read a wikipedia page on philosophy! - but also to contrast it with war and if it could be necessary. having read the story, im still not sure what to take away - is war necessary? do we just tell ourselves it is? is it human nature to be pacifist or to be violent? if y'all have thoughts on the story, i'd love to hear about it!
