Dr. Levi Zurcher, FCOVD, an optometrist in Olympia Washington, discusses several reasons why someone might have difficulty copying notes from the board. It could be due to binocular vision dysfunction which is the inability our eyes to converge together at one point or poor visual processing which makes it difficult for us to handle large chunks of information. It can also be due to spatial localization where a child may lose its place when reading and have to reread the complete passage to get back where they were. This makes it difficult to copy notes from a board or a book.
If your child has a hard time copying notes from the board, they may be one of the estimated 10%-15% of students that have functional vision problems such as binocular vision dysfunction that impact school performance. If you would like to schedule a pediatric eye exam which includes a binocular vision assessment, you can call our office at (360) 491-2121 or fill out this form: https://amplifyeyecareolympia.com/appointment-request-form/. - Discover more about Do you have a hard time copying notes from a board? In this video, Dr. Simran Toor, an optometrist in Olympia Washington, discusses how often you should have a comprehensive eye exam. The following timelines are recommended for different age groups:
● Children who are six to 12 months old should have an eye exam once a year. ● If you are under 18, she recommends having a comprehensive eye exam every year especially if you wear prescription glasses or contacts. ● If you are between the ages of 18 and 65, it is acceptable to get an eye exam every two years. If you have an eye condition, vision problems, family history of eye disease, or any symptoms that impact your quality of life, you should see your eye doctor annually or as frequently as they suggest. ● Once you reach 65, it’s advised to have a comprehensive eye exam every year to make sure that there are no changes in your vision or eye health.
In the event that you start noticing sudden changes in your vision, it is vital to see your eye doctor sooner than the recommended schedule for an eye exam, to get it checked so that we could make sure your eyes are healthy and it doesn’t lead to a serious eye condition.

Dr. Simran Toor, an optometrist in Olympia Washington, describes what happens during an eye exam. Each eye exam is different from the other and may address a specific eye condition such as low vision, dry eye, post trauma vision etc.
The first step in an eye exam is a pre-test to gather information for our eye doctor to review. Our eye doctor will then ask you some questions about your eye conditions, symptoms, etc. After that, they will take a look at your prescription and see if anything has changed. Then they will dilate your eyes to look at the back part of your eye to check for retinal diseases. Afterwards, our eye doctor will have you sit in the exam chair in front of the slit lamp. It is an instrument with a big microscope and a light attached. It allows them to look at both the front (cornea) and the back part of your eye (retina). After assessing your eyes and vision, our eye doctor will discuss the findings of the eye exam, and the available treatment options. If eye disease is present or a visual condition exists our eye doctor will discuss how the condition is progressing, treatment options, and management. Please feel free to ask our eye doctor any questions during any part of the eye exam.

Dr. Simran Toor from American Family Vision Clinic discusses what you should do if you ever experience a scratched eye. The first thing you should do is call our eye doctor. Even though many minor scratches heal on their own, or with artificial tears, it is still important to see a doctor. Watch full video here - https://youtu.be/n6_r3PMddKA. The biggest concern is infection. Therefore, we want to make sure that any infection is prevented. In cases of corneal abrasions or scratches that are more severe, our eye doctors may use a bandage contact lens to ease the pain and speed up the healing process. Depending on how deep or large the scratches are, they will either heal in a few days or require a bit more attention.
You should always see an eye doctor if you think you have a corneal abrasion or scratch on your eye to make sure you are receiving the proper treatment. To schedule an emergency eye exam with our eye doctor, call (360) 491-2121. #eyeexam #eyedoctor #olympia #eyehealth #eyedisease - Discover more about What you should do if you have a scratched eye? https://amplifyeyecareolympia.com/ocular-disease/scratched-eye/ or Visit our website 🌐:https://amplifyeyecareolympia.com/ Visit us at 📍:  400 Yauger Way SW. Dr. Simran Toor from American Family Vision Clinic discusses what is a scratched eye. Watch full video here - https://youtu.be/n6_r3PMddKA A scratched eye is medically referred to as a corneal abrasion. A sudden injury or something stuck under the lid can cause it to occur, leading to scratches on the eyes as you blink. Corneal abrasions are more likely to occur in people with dry eyes, in those who wear contact lenses, or in people who work in dusty or debris-filled environments. This is why eye doctors are very vocal that people should always wear protective eye wear whenever they are in a dusty or debris-filled environment. - Discover more about What is corneal abrasion below! https://aecare.link/zNYXzyTn or Visit our website 🌐:https://amplifyeyecareolympia.com/ Visit us at 📍:  400 Yauger Way SW. Macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of severe vision loss in adults over age 50. Dr. Simran Toor, an optometrist in Olympia Washington, discusses causes, symptoms and prevention of macular degeneration, an eye condition which can affect your central vision. It is caused by damage to the back part of your eye called the macula which is responsible for your central vision. AMD can be classified as wet or dry. Wet form of AMD has a more severe impact on your central vision and is more difficult to manage. It can cause blurred vision, reduced contrast sensitivity, and inability to perform everyday activities like reading, walking, and driving. It is not possible to cure macular degeneration as there are several risk factors that are beyond our control, such as aging and having a family history of the disease. However, you can do other things to improve your retinal health and slow the progression of AMD like taking vitamins, wearing sun protection, and quitting smoking.

Color blindness occurs in 1 out of 12 men (8%) and in 1 out of 200 women (0.5%). Dr. Simran Toor, an optometrist in Olympia Washington, discusses causes, types, and diagnosis of color blindness, an eye condition which affects the ability to distinguish colors. In addition to being inherited, color blindness can also be acquired because of several different reasons, such as optic nerve disease or atrophy. Different medications, strokes to the eye, and toxic materials can cause color deficiencies. Different types of color blindness include deuteranomaly (reduced ability to see green color), protanomaly (reduced ability to see red color), tritanomaly (difficulty distinguishing between blue and green and between yellow and red), and protanopia (difficulty distinguishing between red and green). If you're having trouble distinguishing colors, contact our eye doctor at 360-491-2121. Patients with color blindness visit our clinic from all over Washington, and we are proud to be a leading provider of eye care services including color blindness tests for patients from Olympia, Lakewood, Tacoma, and Lacey. #colorblindness #protanomaly #deuteranomaly #protanopia #Tritanomaly #colordeficiency - Discover more about Color Blindness below- https://amplifyeyecareolympia.com/routine-eye-care/color-blindness/ or Visit our website 🌐:https://amplifyeyecareolympia.com/ Visit us at 📍:  400 Yauger Way SW. Dr. Simran Toor, an optometrist in Olympia Washington, discusses anisocoria, an eye condition in which pupils differ in size. Normally, our pupils are round and equal in size between both eyes, but about 20% of the population has naturally different-sized pupils. The difference is usually very small, like one millimeter. We encourage you to see our eye doctors if you notice that one pupil is bigger or smaller than the other, perhaps as a result of an injury. While anisocoria isn't curable, it's important to do the workup to figure out what the underlying causes are and treat them.
