I haven't said much personally about Veilguard besides sharing my Rook and a few other silly things, but I do have a couple thoughts now that I'm so very far into my playthrough (halfway at about 50 hours).

I know the music hasn't hit like some hoped it would. I agree that it is not as good as Inquisition. That's still my favorite OST of the series. I understand BioWare wanted a new composer for the next game because each game has had a different composer. But given how very connected Inquisition and Veilguard are, I disagree with that premise and thought they should have stuck with Morris, and not only for that reason. He's a fucking musical genius.

All that said, I do enjoy Zimmer's and Balfe's work on this OST. It's not bad. I was shittalking the main theme for weeks after it came out but when you mash it up with the actual opening of the game, it fits. And I like all the softer versions of it, the less complicated takes with less instrumentation. And there are other tracks that call back to Inquisition. No, I'm not referring to the cameos where Morris's actual tracks were used. I'm talking about Zimmer/Balfe's new content where they threaded callbacks to Inquisition. Once I finish the game, I'm going to do a much deeper analysis of the Veilguard OST, but for now, I'm enjoying it as I play the game (I don't want to listen to the OST before I finish the game itself).

A couple other thoughts in shorter form:

The combat is fun. Compared to previous games, it's dynamic enough that, while there are patterns, you still have to be on your toes. Yes there's the rock, paper, scissors of get rid of armor, get rid of barrier, then spam left click/spells. But you know what, compared to the previous games, I'm enjoying that. It's a nice change of pace. I'm also playing a Mourn Watch Death Mage, so there's some nice flavor there.

Skin texture sucks. It's too smooth. It gives everyone a cartoonist look. I hate it.

Hair is fucking gorgeous. I just wish there were more styles I liked.

The story and quests are fantastic.

I find the dialogue to be a fun balance between seriousness, camp, and exposition.

Now on to my biggest fucking complaint about the game so far and given what I've read (without spoiling anything), I'm ultimately going to be disappointed in the long-run by the romances. My mage committed to Emmrich and I love him. He's wonderful. Read on for some spoilery-ish facets of his romance.

He's an artist. Both with his magic and his words. He's sophisticated and overly romantic in such a respectful way. Rook's interest in him takes him by surprise because I believe canonically there's an age gap (that I headcanon away), but it's adorable. Plus, graveyard dates. He's very Gomez Addams but without all the public displays of affection (which I also headcanon away because fuck that noise).

END SPOILERS

My last point in the spoilers section about Emmrich's romance is my biggest complaint of the game. There's very little actual romance! And it's because you can't roll up to your companions at any given time and open a dialogue with them. There's no open conversation option. You only get to talk to them if they have a time-sensitive marker or a quest marker on their icon on the map. No free smooches on the ramparts!

And the romance moments we do get are so few and far between in a game that is absolutely massive, not in terms of map size this time, but in terms of content. There is so much good content (as opposed to the shit side quests of collecting 10 bear asses in the Hinterlands of Inquisition). The side quests all feel directly tied to the area's story so they all feel worth doing. We're never doing dumb shit like drawing constellations in the sky or finding shards through tranquil mage skulls (don't ever forget that they used the skulls of mages forced into tranquility specifically for this purpose).

Now I'm not through the whole game yet, but I'm hearing and seeing that there's next to no nudity. Given that on top of the lack of open convos and sparse romantic content, I'm bummed. I still love Emmrich, and I know I'll enjoy the others when I do get to them (because I plan on it). But damn. I was hoping for Desk Scene (iykyk) levels of spice outta this crew.

That's it. Halfway through the game and this is how I feel so far. I'm thoroughly enjoying the game and will continue to binge it. I have Rooks planned for the rest of the companions, too. What do you think about Jessica's play? Did she write Rina and Marshall so unpleasant and flat accidentally, because she isn't a skilled writer, or she definately have complaints to Rachel and Matt and it was a provocation to a quarrel?

Did you mean Morris? Morris and Rina? Morris was the character that Matt finds himself partly based off, at least with being regarded as a pushover. His backstory originates from Rachel's history with her brother being assaulted by Roger. Rina encapsulates Rachel's aloof nature, but she's written as the comedic character. They're both supporting characters and likely designed the way they were to prop Juniper up as a character to root for. They both represent forms of apathy, whether rolling over or turning a blind eye to Teagan and the injustices they faced, and gives the audience a stronger reason to emphasise and relate with Juniper, who was a more serious character comparatively who wanted to fix things.

You've asked a good question. I don't feel we can answer any of those we reach a new chapter though to see if the damage from the play is long-lasting and whether or not Jessica wasn't necessarily thinking when she was writing the characters, or if there's something deeper here and her writing was instead venting. There's a chance that this could just be a thing that gets resolved in the background at the same time, it could lead to a splintered senior group.

Veronica, not keen on dealing with spoilers, being expectedly somewhat ominous on that front...

But it would be an interesting development if we find it had larger repercussions much later as Jessica has largely appeared as a level-headed supporting character for a long time. But we had seen some early warning sides that, well...Jessica might be willing to hold a grudge for a lot longer than we thought. That one time in Class of 2008 where she wasn't as forgiving as Rachel, for example.

I think it's pretty clear from how this chapter ends that Jessica, despite being pretty defensive initially that the characters had no relationship, ends up admitting that her writing shared a lot of her feelings, and perhaps too maybe her grievances with the people around her who had either decided to be apathetic about the situation, especially since she had found herself quite on her own when it came to dealing with the slander. Whether it was her feelings taking over her writing or something deliberate, we don't know yet.

We see this idea come to fruition when Jessica's main defense against these accusations is plausible deniability, much like a Southpark disclaimer "characters and events represented are entirely fictional and any resemblance to any alive person is completely accidental", and even gaslights Matt and Rachel when drawing conclusions between Aaron and Albert.

This works for a bit until it becomes less likely the case when Jordan gets involved and Jessica admits Tess may have been the benchmark for Teagan and not Tiffany, opening up the room for possibility for Matt and Jessica that their suspicions are right.

And further so when the two girls who made fun of Jessica initially when Tess spread the rumors come to apologise, and Tess admits there might have been a few layers from her personal life that might've influenced her story.

Even further blown apart when Jessica shies away from Madison when Rachel gives her the possibility of an idea she had a character based on her too.

Things wrap up as we expect towards the end and we see a bit deeper into the feelings, where one side wishes there was one communication, but one would rather wear their heart on their sleeve given the opportunity.

But yes, I guess we'll find out where this goes in the future. There is a chance this will get resolved quickly given their status as supporting characters, then again, the seniors have had it too good this year and they need some drama. It will be a question if whether Jessica bundling up her feelings for too long will have resulted in a fractured seniors table or just some animosity between close friends.

As far as the writing goes though, I feel Jessica might've had a better play in the end of things given she was able to attain an awful lot; venting her feelings, being the hero, appealing to a few people and even getting an apology out of it. But having a successful play at the cost of friendships is likely all the more reason to believe that the plays are cursed and will turn into a disaster no matter who the writer is.

My Autobiography in Love Stories

What better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than to show the love stories that made me who I am? But even better than that, I'm going to show all the various forms of love stories! If you've ever spoken with someone who loves Ancient Greek, then you'll know there are 4 four words in Greek that the English language translates with the paltry word "love." There's Eros, which is the romantic love that most people think of around Valentine's Day (and which is what most people seem to think is the only love that matters); storge, the love between family that implies comfort and acceptance, sometimes also called philios; the love between friends, which is commonly referred to as platonic love; and agape, which is a selfless love, usually used in religious writings to describe the love a deity has for its creation. (In Judeo-Christian writings, this term is ONLY used when talking about God's love for humankind.)

Now, some of these will be romantic love because, despite being ace, I do love a good love story. It does draw me into a world and drive characters. But there are plenty of stories that made me who I am that don't have a romantic love story or whose *driving* love story is one of the other three loves.

Warning: This is long as fuck! But I had so much fun writing it!

The Scooby Gang is first, with platonic love. These characters were my groundwork for not only deductive reasoning, but also what a solid friendship group should look like. Everyone pulls their weight and contributes something to the greater relationship system, but no one does it alone. Also, Shaggy's relationship with Scooby is one I always try to emulate with each of my furbuddies that I have accrued in my job.

My dad put on the film of To Kill a Mockingbird late at night when I was 5 years old, hoping it would bore me enough that I'd fall asleep. Instead, he birthed a life long obsession with this movie and with the relationship between Scout and her father, Atticus Finch. Obviously, this is Storge love, and one of the greatest examples of it in literature and film. Atticus is devoted to his children and to justice, even when it seems to be a lost cause that will win him no favors with his community. Every time I watch this movie, I see a lot of my relationship with my father in Scout's relationship with Atticus, and it makes this movie a comfort watch for me, even though the subject matter is far from comforting.

This image is missing Screech, but I just couldn't find a gif of the whole gang together in a quick search. Obviously, the gang as a whole is the personification of platonic love. The friendship is very realistic in that none of the get along ALL the time, but no one is always totally in the right in one of their arguments and as such, none of the fights last for more than an episode or two. (Not that this show has the greatest continuity, lol, which the 2020 continuance loved to poke fun at). But this friendship love is directly tied in to my next one, which is...

Zack and Kelly from Saved by the Bell, which is romantic love that stems from platonic love. This is the first story that I can remember where I cared about whether two characters got together. And while I can't remember completely what my thoughts were when I initially watched my way through this show at 8 years old, I do remember staying up until almost midnight one Friday night to watch Wedding in Las Vegas on WGN, convinced that if something got in the way of Zack and Kelly's marriage, then I was going to riot. When I was a kid, daydreaming about what teenage life and high school was like, the friendships and the love story of Zack and Kelly was 100% what I hoped for. Sadly, my school was NOTHING like Bayside and there was definitely no Zack Morris. (Not that I was anything like Kelly Kapowski anyway, more's the pity. I was more like Screech.)

Buffy and Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which is, once again, Storge love. He's not her biological father, but by the time we get to the season 3 episode "Helpless," it is more than evident that both Buffy and Giles consider each other family and that she loves Giles like a father. And well, as the episode shows, he loses his job as her Watcher because "[Giles'] love for the child is useless to the cause." And as much as Giles loves all of Buffy's friends, it's Buffy herself that keeps him in Sunnydale and/or returning to it whenever he does leave. It was supposed to be a simple job that lasted only as long as Buffy's destined-to-be-short life. Instead, after only four months in Sunnydale, he was willing to sacrifice his own life for hers and his greatest fear (revealed in "Nightmares") was that Buffy would die, which meant that he had failed *her.* (The fact that he eventually lives out this fear at the end of season 5 breaks my heart.) And when Joyce dies halfway through s05, it's Giles that she calls and it's Giles who sits with her in those first few hours...exactly like a father would do with their child when she's lost her mother.

Xander Harris and Willow Rosenberg, also from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which is also platonic love. Now, Xander gets a lot of hate in the fandom the last few years or so, but I could never hate him. He's far from perfect, but he is a very realistic portrayal of a lot of guy friends I had in high school and in college. I never expected perfection from them, and I don't from a tv character who is the walking epitome of dude in the late 90's either. And this friendship has always had me by the emotional balls. From the first time I saw the episode Surprise at age 10 (which is the first episode my dad let me watch with him as it came on), straight through to the end. I love Willow and Buffy's friendship and Xander and Buffy's friendship. All of them...but Xander and Willow's blows all of it out of the water. This is what childhood friendship looks like it when it carries on into adulthood. It really does do things like forgive one of them trying to end the world because it always sees the original person behind those actions. S06 of Buffy has some serious writing problems, but the decision to have Xander's friendship with Willow be what saves the world instead of any strength of Buffy's or magic of Giles' was a brilliant call.

Harry Potter and Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter Series by She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. In canon, they're platonic love, but I always shipped them and I will honestly never understand why the story *didn't* go that way. I do love Ron in the trio friendship, but these two are the dynamic I continuously come back for when I re-read my way through the books. Starting from Prisoner of Azkaban and continuing onwards, the adventures these two had together on their own in the books were always my favorite moments. When Ron got included, it tended to just be Ron and Hermione snapping at each other with Harry awkwardly being triangled into their arguments, and I didn't like that for him. Dude had enough to be getting on with. Just, other writers, if you've ever wondered what a good male/female friendship looks like, here you go. It's these two and the friendship between Zack and Lisa on SbtB as my go-tos for badass m/f friendship dynamics.

Max Evans and Liz Parker from Roswell (1999). Romantic love, obviously, as this clip is from their wedding in the series finale. Don't get me wrong, I love Max Evans and Liz Ortecho from Roswell, New Mexico (2019), which is an adaptation of the same source material of young adult novels called Roswell High, and there will be more from that later. But man...this show and this couple had my brain chemistry altered so hard. This was pre-internet days for me so I literally had no idea of things like fan fiction or fan forums, and none of my friends from school were heavily into this show and so I was stuck obsessing over them all by my lonesome and frightening my parents with how obsessive I was over this show and the books that inspired it. (Spring Break my freshman year of high school is famous in my family because we went to New Bern in North Carolina and I didn't leave our condo at all and skipped eating meals the entire week because I could not put down those Roswell High books for ANYTHING. Whether Max and Liz ended up together was too important and definitely more important than food or mini-golf or whatever. This bad habit with my obsessions has not improved...at all.)

Sydney Bristow and Michael Vaughn from Alias. Theirs is slow burn romantic love that starts out as platonic love. It had that whole forbidden love aspect going for it -- she's a double agent undercover and constantly being monitored by the enemy agency, so they can't acknowledge each other when in public together, but he's also the ONLY person she can talk to about a lot of stuff. And the scene this gif is from is the one where I started shipping them (which is episode 3 btw). This is the ship that got me to start reading fanfic and introduced me to fan forums and showed me that my tendency to analyze shows frame by frame was NOT as strange as my childhood friends had led me to believe. There are, in fact, thousands of people who love the same shows or relationships as I do and pick them apart just as much. So this pairing will always hold a special place in my heart for that, in addition to just being a brilliant couple. I still revisit this love story at least once every year and a half, and sometimes more often even than that.

Jack and Sydney Bristow from Alias. Another one of my Storge love, father/daughter stories. I have a strong love for them because, as you can probably guess, I have a strong bond with my dad irl and I love stories that celebrate the complexity of that relationship. In my initial watch through of this series in my teenage years, this relationship took a back seat to my shipping of Vaughn and Sydney, but on re-watches (of which there must be close to a hundred or more by now), it is evident that the writers of the show used this relationship as its main structure. And I love them for that. It was always one step forward and two steps back with these two -- I mean, they were both spies with a lot of secrets, especially on Jack's side -- but they would give up anything for each other or someone the other one cared about and I loved them both for that.

Joan Girardi and God from Joan of Arcadia. This is the only one on the list that qualifies as Agape love because, well, God is involved. Also, I typed in Joan Girardi in the gif search and everything was just Joan and Cute Guy God, which I found HILARIOUS. If you've never seen the show, God does not always look the way God does in this gif. God sometimes shows up as a little girl, as a lunch lady, as a goth kid, as a waiter smoking a cigarette. It all depends on where Joan is and how she'd be most receptive to hearing God's words and challenges. Heck, one time God was Zachary Quinto. (Yeah, that legit happened!) This show, man...it makes me cry every episode. And a lot of that comes down to the realistic relationship between Joan, who does what God tells her but not always in the best way, and God who, in typical God of the Bible fashion, tends to be vague in their commands and it often leads to hard fallout for Joan. But God is always by her side in the end, even in the silence. (Goodness, I need to re-watch this. I could use a good cry.)

The Girardi Family from Joan of Arcadia. (Storge love, obviously). The most realistically written family I have ever seen on television. They're messy and chaotic, but they're supportive of each other and they work together to keep the family afloat. Every dinner family conversation sounds like one my family has had around our dinner table. (Despite being in our late 30s, both me and my brother eat dinner with my parents at their house multiple times a week cos neither of us can cook for shit.) While this family has their comedic moments, they also comfort each other and give each other much needed reality checks.

The Doctor and Rose Tyler from Doctor Who. The greatest romantic love story ever told, bar none. If you want to write one better, I'm sorry. It can't be done. Russell T. Davies beat you to it. I love it all. Every single damn second of it. From the Ninth Doctor's introduction to Rose becoming Bad Wolf (which I guess kind of verges this into Agape love, at least for a key canon moment) to the Tenth Doctor literally being born out of love for her, to the painful separation in Doomsday, to the Doctor spending most of s03 and s04 trying to be the person he was when he traveled with Rose and not being able to do that, to finding her again on that street in Chiswick at the end of the world in Stolen Earth, to the creation of TenToo, to getting his happy ever after with her in Journey's End, to the reveal that the Doctor went back and revisited ALL of his past companions (revealed by the Eleventh Doctor in The Death of the Doctor in The Sarah Jane Adventures) and saved Rose for last and made her the ONLY companion he actually spoke to before regenerating. Just...ugh. Sorry, people. RTD wrote a perfect love story and you can't beat it. Not with me at any rate. It's been almost 19 years since I first saw an episode of DW and they still leave every other one in the dust.

Peter Bishop and Olivia Dunham from Fringe. Romantic love that literally re-wrote the universe TWICE. Doesn't get much more epic than that. (There's a reason that the only times I've done a cross over story with DW, it's with this show. The characters work together way too well not to play with them all.)

Walter and Peter Bishop from Fringe. Storge love, once again, but this time a father and son. This father loved his son so much that he almost doomed two universes to collapse because he couldn't let go. (Lucky for him, his son fell in love with a woman from a different universe and the two of them fixed his mistake). It's a story about forgiveness and how love both drives us and can cause us to make mistakes. It's just a beautiful story from start to finish.

Henry Tilney and Catherine Morland from Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey. Romantic love born from platonic love (on Henry's part at least. Catherine was pretty into him from the getgo). They are my literature OTP. They're funny and they tease each other in the nicest way, and there's just this *comfortableness* about them. Just...go read the book. I can't explain it, but if you read it, you'll understand. Eat dust, Darcy and Elizabeth! Henry and Catherine are where it's at!

Nikita Mears and Seymour Birkhoff from Nikita (2009). I know. It's heresy. I have the platonic love of Nikita and Birkhoff on my list of influential love stories, but not the romantic love story of Michael and Nikita. Don't get me wrong, I love my Mikita, but this friendship gets me every time. Even when Michael and Birkhoff still work for Division, Nikita doesn't have it in her to really hurt Nerd; and, in turn, Birkhoff never manages to really help Percy track down Nikki. When Nikita leaves them all behind at the end of s03 to go on the run, Birkhoff is just as hurt by her decision as Michael is, though for very different reasons. This show and friendship proves that it doesn't have to be romantic for love to be all encompassing.

Nikita Mears and Alexandra Udinov from Nikita (2009). Every friendship on this show gets me. Every character in the core group over the years have distinct relationships with the other members and they're all interesting. But in this iteration of the Nikita story (the fourth version of this originally French story), this friendship is the first one we see. And it is SO FUN. And so complicated. There's back stabbing, there's deceits and outright lies. But there's also loyalty and compassion and a true sisterly bond despite not actually being related. They started the fight together in 1x01 and in the final episode of 4x06, they finished it together, too. I loved that for them.

Shane Madej and Ryan Bergara from the web series Buzzfeed Unsolved: Supernatural, Buzzfeed Unsolved: True Crime, and creators of the production company Watcher Entertainment. Real life besties creating chaos on the regular. I love to see it! I discovered BFU in June of 2018 when I was putting off working on my conflict analysis project for my graduate program. Why do research when I can watch two dumbasses ghost hunt instead? And I have watched everything they're involved with since. Their friendship comes across as so genuine and so closely resembles what my hangouts with my best friends look like when we feel like really cutting loose that it feels like hanging out with people when I watch them. They razz each other, but they also support each other and hold each other accountable. A+ platonic love representation. (Also, got to love two guy friends who tell each other they love each other on the reg and don't appear to feel awkward about it at all. No toxic masculinity with those two!)

Max Evans and Liz Ortecho from Roswell, New Mexico (2019). Romantic love that started as platonic love when they were teenagers. (Though it was always romantic love on Max's side.) I have issues with the writing of this show on the whole. (God, I could write a whole essay about it.) But one thing this show got right is the instant chemistry between these two characters. (Hell, they even had Shiri Appleby, the OG Liz, direct the episode where these two have their first kiss! She also came back as a guest actress in s04, and Jason Behr, the OG Max, guest starred in s02.) So, this show knew what the fans of the OG series would be looking for when they premiered this newer adaptation. And for the most part, they got it. I was definitely hooked, at least...but we'll just ignore the terrible ending this show gave their lead couple. I just...I have no idea what the hell they were thinking there.

Damon Salvatore and Elena Gilbert from The Vampire Diaries. Romantic love, obviously. And if you're wondering why they're showing up so late -- post 2019 -- it's because while I did watch the first three seasons of this show as they aired, I gave up on it on 4x08. I came back to it on Netflix in 2020 and marathoned it. I always loved Delena though and the reason I stopped watching it was because the show finally put them together and then did the sire bond thing, and I was just like, "Nope. Stop ship-baiting me." and I moved on to other fandoms. But when I decided to finally watch the show and read the books, they had me again. I just love these two. This is a beauty and the beast story in long form, done right. Damon doesn't become a good person overnight, and he still falls back into those old behaviors occasionally even six seasons in because they're trauma responses ingrained over 175 years. They're never going to just disappear. But Elena also learns what she can forgive and what she can't, and by loving him, he discovers he wants to be the man she believes he always has been. Beautifully done and wonderfully re-watchable in its entirety. (Although the books are not so re-readable. They're pretty bad, lol.)

Damon and Stefan Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries. For me, even when the love triangle stuff was getting old, and in s07-s08 when Elena was stuck in a magical sleep, the relationship between these two kept the story afloat for me. I love a good brotherly love story. (I did, after all, obsess over Supernatural for a decade). I read an argument back in my days in the Olicity side of the Arrow fandom that the crux of any good story is that every character has an epic love. It's just not necessarily *romantic* love. It's just whatever love is acquired that was not a guarantee of being returned and the love that is the impetus for change in a character. And I think that's what works so great here. Damon's great love is Elena. Stefan's great love is Damon. It makes all their ups and downs have a resonance that so many of the other relationships on this show just seem to lack.

Mac Morris and Daisy Jimenez from Saved by the Bell (2020). It's fitting to end with the continuance of one of my earliest favorite love stories. Now, these two are platonic love although the show runners did say that they had planned to have them date in s03. However, the show got cancelled after s02. But even in that, the show made it more than clear that Mac had a serious crush on Daisy (in a way we've never seen Mac have one) and Daisy hinted in the final moments of the s02 finale that she was also interested. So platonic starting to push into romantic by the end. (Also, the fact that I'm typing up this entry while wearing a Bayside High Tigers t-shirt has me giggling so hard.) Forever cursing Peacock for canceling this show because it was the most perfect continuance I've ever seen of a well-known IP. And I say that as a person who loved the newer iteration of Are You Afraid of the Dark? and Goosebumps, etc. But these new characters felt original, and it knew how to poke fun at the original series and its shortcomings without being malicious about it. And the friendships in this new version felt just as authentic and true to life as the OG series. (Hell, we even get to see the characters of the main series back again several times, minus Mr. Belding and Screech, the latter's actor sadly passing away before the filming of s02. In the premier of s02, we get a mention that Screech as a character has passed away, and the OG characters gather together for a memorial to their old friend at The Max. Loved that they did that.)

I'll forever be upset that I'll never get to see what the writers had in store for Mac and Daisy as potential romantic interests -- would they be like Zack and Kelly and stand the test of time or would they have ended up like Slater and Jessie and broken up and moved on, only to find each other again years later? *sigh* Guess I should write a fanfic and answer that question for myself. Sadly, I suck at comedy writing.

WIP Wednesday (on a Thursday!)

Look, I just got back from holiday I have no concept of time and space anymore. Plus @greypetrel tagged me so hold on to your butts!

I've been out of town on vacation for the past week and while I brought with me things to do, I didn't write a single damn thing or draw even the smallest doodles of pictures. And you know what? It was good for me! I was "no thoughts head empty" for the first three days and it was very relaxing and very re-invigorating. The first time I thought to maybe crack open a fic or drawing was on the flight home (thank you, WestJet, for having an absolutely shitty app for your "complimentary in flight entertainment"). And boy, did I write! I went back to a fic I had started about a year ago that I got sidetracked from and it felt good to go back to it and make some progress and be happy with the results.

So here is finally some more Grand Tourney Incident fic to share with you! Fun Fact for friends I have only met recently: Horatio Morris was invented for this fic despite the fact that I then wrote a prequel fleshing him out more before I ever finished this one. Funny how that happens.

For context: A young Quinn Trevelyan delivers a freshly painted shield to his older brother ahead of the afternoon's joust. Quinn plans on entering the Grand Tourney himself, forever freeing himself from having to squire for his brother - provided, of course, that Ser Emile Trevelyan doesn't catch wind and do something to stop him.

He found Emile inside his tent, half-dressed only from the waist down in his arming trousers and polished obsidian greaves.  He had leaned a piece of cut glass against what looked like several of Octavian's accounting books, and set up a washbasin where he was currently focused on trimming his beard. Emile Trevelyan was not unhandsome and he and Quinn both cut very similar profiles.  They had inherited the same nose from their father though Emile had more of their mother's coloring - bright red hair and steel-grey eyes.  Emile's hair had much more of a curl to it too and between his mop of hair and the beard he always kept carefully shaped and cut in the style typical of Ostwick men he would have been a popular knight among tourney fans even if he hadn't been good at what he did.  Unfortunately, however, Emile happened to also be exceptionally talented on a horse and had several tourney wins under his belt.  Even the years when he didn't place first, he still consistently finished in the upper part of the lists and was constantly favored to win among the betting pools.  He'd made himself a celebrity among the Free Marches and the only reason it hadn't gone to his head was because he'd always had an insufferably inflated ego for as long as Quinn could remember. Emile gave Quinn only the barest of glances at first as he entered the tent until he saw the painted shield tucked under his arm.  He set down his razor and snapped his fingers at Quinn - just as he did with all the servants - and told him he wasn't about to go stashing away a shield that didn't meet his approval. Quinn huffed and rolled his eyes, but held up the shield for presentation anyway. Emile got to his feet and walked over, snatching the wooden shield out of Quinn's hands.  He turned it over carefully, narrowing his eyes at Quinn when he couldn't find any overt or obvious fault with the painting.  "You had that boyfriend of yours do this." Quinn crossed his arms defiantly.  "It's done and it looks like a horse." Emile frowned, but he put the shield aside with the rest of his armour anyway.  "Some of these lines are crooked.  But I'll let it go only because Otto has been looking for you." "Did he say what for?" asked Quinn. "No, and I didn't care to ask," said Emile curtly, returning back to his washbasin and razor. Quinn frowned, watching Emile carefully.  It seemed odd for his brother to simply dismiss him like that, but Octavian wasn't just their older brother this time.  He was acting head of the family until they returned to Ostwick which meant even Emile had to watch his tongue and follow along.  Quinn couldn't imagine what Octavian would want with him - everything Quinn knew about the business of horsebreeding and the Trevelyan stock was knowledge Octavian had tenfold.  But then maybe his brother didn't actually want anything from him.  Maybe this was his way of making sure Quinn was free for this afternoon's archery and his way of letting him know that the papers from their father had been delivered. The frown changed into a smile and Quinn hurriedly left Emile and his tent before his brother could notice and question why he was suddenly wearing a haughty-looking grin.

1. Are you named after anyone?

Nova: I’m named for Novellia Ventura, a soldier who served under my father in the Southern army. She was a spy who did so well that Cosimo honored her with the name of his child. There’s a reason I don’t talk about it.

Livia: My first name is for Imperatrice Lavinia, who’s an ancestor of mine. And my middle name is Domitilla, for my grandmother’s aunt--she was a great stateswoman who’s been mostly erased from the history books. (If you’re curious why)

Adrasteia: Nope. Naming people after someone isn’t as common in Bellamagna, we aim to name children something they can grow into. For example, my name means “not inclined to run away”, meant to ward off cowardice in battle.

2. When was the last time you cried?

Nova: That last night at home. If I see Ottavio again I’m hunting him for sport.

Livia: I don’t cry

Adrasteia: On the anniversary of my parents’ and siblings’ death. They don’t have an actual grave I can visit, but I try and do as much of the mourning rites as I can from here.

3. Do you have kids?

Nova: Nope! And I’m not sure I want them, considering the world right now

Livia: Not yet, but I’m expected to have some eventually

Adrasteia: No, and I don't want them

4. Do you use sarcasm?

Nova: Yes. Cloelia thinks it’s too much. 

Livia: Depends who I’m talking to

Nova: Their expression--if they’re smiling, or angry. I try to know how to behave going into an interaction

Livia: Their eyes--I can tell an ulterior motive from a mile away, and it’s all in the eyes--smiles can be faked

Nova: Black, unless I’m doing...let’s just say they sometimes turn gold

Nova: History. It’s fun how we never learn from mistakes

someone asked about this au so I'm gonna talk about it

It's based off of various modern au fics that I've read. i like drawing from au fics or books with no film adaptation because the designs are fun to make and to suit them to the characters

Anyways here's what the characters are like:

Alison- therapist, she's basically the same as in the show just she doesn't live in button house

Captain- history teacher lives alone with his pet cat monty, retired army captain after an injury in his knee, he says it was because of a heroic act that had to remain classified, he really just had a spectacular fall down the stairs after a mild heart attack and miraculously survived, havers died on the frontlines several years ago before the captain had a chance to tell him how he felt about him, he has a massive crush on pat 

Fanny- successful accountant, lives button house, divorced her husband because he pushed her out of a window after she found out about his affair, she managed to get the house in the divorce despite the fact that it was george's, she worked as julian’s financial advisor before he decided he knew what was best with his money

Humphrey- history teacher, works with the captain, he lives alone after his wife left him, has a knighthood for god knows what reason and lives in a huge house he inherited from his father before he died, shares his money and pays for everything he can because he doesn't know what to do with his money (julian suggested an offshore bank account, humphrey refused)

Julian- ex tory mp, after being involved in a sex scandal where he very nearly died from a heart attack and drug overdose, he was forced to resign, his wife divorced him and took custody of their child he decided he wanted to become a better person, he never did anything about this except for moving to a marginally smaller house with a new room mate robin, he still had the same awful worldview and political stance, but he can’t really do anything about it, he is now a successful lawyer

Kitty- works in mary’s coffee shop, studying at drama school, lives next door to the captain and is quite close with him, childhood friends with alison who is a regular at the coffee shop, she fell out with her sister when alison helped her realise how horrible she really was.

Mary- owns her own coffee shop/farm shop which she co-runs with annie,everyone spends time at the coffee shop, her and annie are married, annie helped her overcome her social anxiety.

Pat- french teacher, he works with cap and humphrey, he also runs the local scouts troop, he lives alone after carol and morris eloped, daley usually lives with carol and morris but he comes to stay with pat at weekends, he has a crush on the captain

Robin- honestly hes probably just a homeless guy, julian found him on the street on his self redemption arc and was like ‘hey do you want to move in with me’, then they moved in together and they’re married now, he dresses in pyjamas all the time, this guy has never worn real clothes, he wore a hoodie and sweatpants to a wedding once

anyways thats all i have to say i think if anyone would like to add anything that would be cool idk if you have any headcannons for like a modern au PLEASE tell me

hey uhh what are your lgbt headcanons for the interns

Nothing is set in stone for me. I see other people’s ideas that I like and change up in my head a lot so anything I say here can probably change. Also I was gonna draw the characters with their flags or something but considering I can’t decide, I am just gonna ramble.

Norma: I’ve seen people call her a lesbian, which I like a lot, but I can also see her as asexual or at least aromantic. An aro lesbian seems like a nice fit for her. I can also see her as either a cis woman or trans woman, keeping the she/her pronouns.

Lizzie: I think I saw someone use all pronouns for Lizzie and I honestly love that. So like for me, He/It/They/She, mainly It/They with He/She being put in every so often. I’ll probably forget about this tho, but I really like that as an idea! Gender-wise would probably be either agender, genderfluid, or nonbinary. I’m liking agender. For sexuality... hmmm, this one I’m not sure about, I’d honestly like it to be asexual as well, but that I just because I really like Lizzie and want to project onto them, but also being pan or bi is something they could definitely be!

Morris: He/Him for Morris, and probably gay, or bi/pan/omni leaning a bit to the masc side, tho he probably doesn’t realize that yet. I can see him being pretty fluid and open in his sexuality, willing to try new things when he can. Um, probably a cis man, could be nonbinary.

Adam: Either a straight trans man, or an intersex person who likes women. Pronouns would probably be mainly he/him but he’d experiment with other pronouns and neopronouns, especially with Lizzie. Trying new things to see what sticks or doesn’t. Honestly I can see Adam trying yo/yoself pronouns for a while, maybe they stick or not, idk.

Sam: Definitely a neopronoun user. Has a whole list. Any pronouns work for Sam, except maybe it/its pronouns. So like, the standard she/her/they, but also things like ze/xir/mew/star. I can even see them using emojis when texting as pronouns. Literally just have fun with pronouns with Sam, she’d love it. And xe’d be aromantic but wanting a queer platonic relationship someday. With gender they would still identify as a woman, but does not care about gendered terms being used on them though likes it when people mix things up for fun instead of just using the same identifiers for xir.

Gisu: Trans woman. She/her. Either like straight or poly. Or like polyamorous but only attracted to guys, something like that. She can appreciate a woman’s beauty, and could romantically date one, but is sexually attracted to guys, or at the very least masc people. I don’t know if I am explaining this right. Though, honestly in some interpretations of Gisu I can see her being aromantic or just unlabelled. The only reason I am leaning towards the first part is because I am starting to come around to the Gisu/Dion ship, though her being aromantic and dating Dion is something that is definitely possible. Like Sam, she could want a queer platonic relationship with guys.

Raz: Raz is technically an intern so I’ll add... him? I’ll be honest, I saw Raz as a cis man (boy? considering Raz is younger would boy be a better word? idk), but then I started seeing trans Raz, both transmasc and transfem. And I really like both of those ideas. Kinda leaning a bit more towards the transmasc idea, but honestly transfem Raz where she realizes she’s a woman later in life and has Lilly to help is something really nice to think about. So Raz’s gender is in the air for me, but I do think Raz would like women at the very least, either just women or both genders (and anything inbetween). So Raz either Raz being straight (transmasc), a lesbian (transfem), or bisexual works for me. Transmac Raz would be he/him for a long time and then go to he/they at some point, while transfem Raz would start off as she/they and then go entirely to she/her.

Kai: the hair was somehow the most fun and the most frustrating to make. I spent like 15 minutes going through your drawings tryng to see how the fuck you shade stuff I was in scrolling hell going through the same 5 drawings deciding on a style

Just went with flat shading because I refuse going on full render for a drawing that’s caused me so much mental torment. Eyes and pose were fun tho. Also now I see why people just put a color over it and lower the opacity for shading, that part was easy

Milo: this one was kinda easier because of that drawing you made me but I still didnt want to copy it but I wanted to replicate your style. The thing I struggled with was the lines you have like 28 drawings with completely different lineart what the fuck am I supposed to do with that. I adore how some parts came out but I want to beat up other. The thicker outline looks cool

Just gave myself a Henry Morris hairstyle bc I refuse to think after making Kai’s shading. Ad yet I still spent 20 minutes going thru every art piece trying to figure out how tf you draw legs

So the only way their fans tell them apart is by that

But there are times where Mike has his tattoos covered or Ike took his piercings off in public alone. A fan mistakens them for the other twin but they still respond to the other name because they don’t feel like there’s a need to correct them since they’re mostly known by Mike and Ike anyways. When the fan posts it on instagram and tags the twin they thought it was the twin that was tagged would comment “wrong twin but nice pic you two”

Happens wayyyyy too many times. Their fans are officially scared to approach one of the two in public alone without their differentiating indicators on which is which

And yes it is widely known that they argue a lot when it comes to writing songs

LoSH S2 discussion

I love Legion of Superheroes. And i love season 2, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think about how it could have been improved. In terms of quality, it varies more than season 1. Some parts are top tier while others… eh.

Season 2 is darker than season 1. And there’s the inherent stigmatism that darker means better. But it’s not true.

A horror schlock film is not inherently better than an animated film.

I don’t blame the staff on all its shortcomings. Kids WB was on its deathbed, so they probably had less time to work and iron out ideas. And executive meddling.

The second season had a lot of good elements, but there are things that weighed it down. I am here to discuss how to improve said things.

Heads up: ended up editing part of this post after rewatching the episodes.

This first bit is more of a personal preference, but instead of the 41st century, maybe move the original source of conflict to a farther region of space, one that the UP doesn’t interact with, and has been growing in terms of turmoil until they finally resort to bringing the Legion over. In other words, it has just been put aside by everyone else to the last minute.

Parallel to Brainy’s relationship to Brainiac. He doesn’t want to deal with it. He never brings it up. But maybe if he did, he wouldn’t have gotten corrupted.

This place still has plenty of old documentation of the original age of superman, so Kell is disillusioned with the ideal glory days. Keep Kell Edgy.

Kell’s home and K3NT still gets destroyed - reflects Krypton’s own destruction.

SPEAKING OF KELL:

Make his story more apparent that it’s one realizing that kindness is not an inherent weakness. And neither is being soft. He was raised for fighting and killing Imperiex, and was taught to think that they were weaknesses. Have him realize his identity can be beyond the Clone of Superman made to kill Imperiex. Or rather, have him react more to realizing that he’s moving beyond his given identity.

To clarify; they do address his development in the show a few times, but I want more continuous development instead of the rapid nods we get. Have him try to interact in a more humane way with others. Especially with other members of the Legion. Where they have to take a double take in seeing him acting not that edgy. Maybe offer more flashback of him fighting Imperiex in comparison, and how he treated allies then.

Also put K3NT’s story under the microscope. I doubt Imperiex just came out of nowhere with his attacks. Plus the fact they went far enough to send a hitman after a fucking child? That screams yikes and maybe we need to double check the story.

And an overall issue to be addressed is what rights do robots have and what conditions need to be met? Because let’s face it, we make robots to do complex work for us. But Colu is a culture where the main people ARE robots. Like in Transformers. What line do we draw between non-sentient robots vs the sentient ones in the 31st century? And what about cyborgs/people who give up their original bodies for robotic ones?

Plus Imperiex himself came to be because of the perfected combination of organic tissue and robotics. This topic of robots and individuality/personhood could have been a fun topic to explore.

Don’t sideline the girls. Leave TG alone. 

Don’t put SG in a coma for nearly the whole season - seriously it’s the reason why the guys make one bad decision after the other. Although with that said, it’s because she’s not around we got the majority of s2 plots. She’s the goddamn mom of the squad. Just make her busier and unable to keep an eye on her idiot boys for the plots based on bad decisions to happen. 

Or have her deal with after-effects of what Esper did to her. Maybe after a whole season of being the emotional support character, have her be the one in need of emotional support or not being able to help directly, especially when the group needs emotional support. Emotional support paradox.

Maybe don’t make Cosmic Boy appear as much as a dick in the episodes where he does show up. He’s trying to hold this goddamn team together, and there’s a goddamn tyrant trying to conquer the galaxy. HE’S FUCKING TIRED AND STRESSED. AND IM SURE THERE ARE A BUNCH OF JERKS WHO WANT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT TO DISSOLVE THE LEGION. Better yet, throw in some more backstory with him and his little brother Pol!

And in regards to Imperiex… The dude has a lot of potential. I like his voice actor, Phil Morris. The guy voiced Dr. Sweets from Atlantis.

But his writing needs help.

In the original DC comics, he’s the embodiment of Entropy. Anyone who’s seen Madoka is probably familiar with what that is. But if you're not, here’s a definition: “ the measure of a system’s thermal energy per unit temperature that is unavailable for doing useful work...” He’s the embodiment of that energy that cannot be used for anything. And Entropy grows over time.

Another definition of what Entropy is “lack of order or predictability; gradual decline into disorder.”

In the comics, he’s more of a cosmic being as a result of him being an embodiment of unusable energy. He’s been in existence since, well, the beginning. He had destroyed the universe and recreated it multiple times. Okay, so that lines up with how the show portrays him. And technically, he does get the universe to reset itself in the 41st century when he alters the 31st century enough.

But I personally feel that making him a cosmic being is kinda… meh?

I personally prefer more personal villains most of the time. Don’t get me wrong, an Eldritch being done right makes a great character, but I can’t see Imperiex as one. At least not LoSH’s version.

Plus I like it when the protagonist sees the villain has a point and has changed as a result for the better.

You know, over a year ago, I used to think that it was impossible to make a tyrannical villain who’s presented as real evil seem complex.

And then… I was introduced to TFP Megatron.

Now for you LoSH fans who haven’t watched Transformers Prime, Megatron was once Megatronus. A low caste member who worked in the mines and Gladiator games. He wanted to fix the growing corruption of Cybertron. To make things better.

But his worse personality traits took over, and he lost that good motivation. Now he’s just fighting to win and defeat Optimus Prime. 

But despite the change of goals and ideals, he doesn’t want to simply abandon his relationship with Optimus. He and Optimus, or as he used to be called, Orion, were fighting for the betterment of society. And they meant something to each other. Megatron doesn’t want to just get it over with. He wants fanfare for his victory over Optimus. And he doesn’t want anyone else to rob him off that. But he isn’t opposed to getting Optimus/Orion back on his side. It’s because of this you can still argue that there is a remaining shred of good in him.

They were the best young lovers anD NO I AM NOT CRYING OVER THEM!

Also, the fact we know he was part of a minority group in the form of the lower cast  that was enslaved can make us sympathize with Megatronus of the past, as well as understand how he came to be.

It doesn’t mean we forgive him for his actions - and he has done a lot of shitty things. And I mean a lot.

But his history is more understandable. TFP Megatron’s a fall from grace.

OK I’m done dissecting TFP Meg’s writing.

We know Imperiex was a slave, and was originally organic, who’s from a society where his purpose is literally just to fight, and was gradually stripped of his original body. He was originally stripped of any agency before then though.

But he says this was a good thing. Calling his original body a weakness. And refers to his old self as a pathetic slave.

He gave up whatever softness he had.

Also, this is where K3NT’s story needs to be reexamined. Imperiex was made during what K3NT described as “A Time of Extended Prosperity”. That time had freaking slaves. And K3NT says that when Imperiex did rise up, they were unprepared. So… they were prosperous, but lacked defense to prevent anything like that happening? Or perhaps those who were in charge were that unpopular that it was easy for Imperiex to start the war.

What made him decide conquering the galaxy was the next thing to do after he had every bit of his original self stripped away? Why go as far as destroy it?

What I’m trying to say is that they could borrow a few pages from the Megatron book. Maybe he was once trying to better the society he was part of, but he decides to play the violent card at some point. And somewhere along that strategy, he starts to lose sight of the initial goal. With that, being the victor and in control becomes the main one.

Or perhaps he has grown cynical of the galaxy as it is and decides it just needs to go all together, and then start from scratch.

Like the second definition of Entropy, he gradually declines in predictability and descends into disorder.

Maybe to juxtaposition the fact that Brainiac became the main threat at the end, make him the opposite or foil to him. Rationality or logic do not serve as first-or-second influences to decisions under pressure. Emotions and his own perceived ideas do.

Speaking of Brainiac, maybe offer more of the OG Brainiac. Give us more of that smooth-voiced Corey Burton. 

Or TFA Megatron.

I’m sorry I have fallen for the shady-business-mafia-boss-but-morally-grey robot.

Also, the members of the legion that only get one episode focus? Give them more screen time. You can’t just introduce superman’s new adopted son Karate Kid and just not bring him for another speaking role again!

Actually, that brings me to another point.

As @spandexinspace​ pointed out, his episode is not the best, and is arguably the worst written of the whole series. Things that are issues do get brushed off to the side.

So a proposal on potential rewrite:

First, have the legion look over its current rules and what exceptions/changes they need to make.

Explore the subject of kids having to participate in these fights.

To clarify, kid shows are meant to be escapism for kids.

Shocking, I know.

So it makes sense that some characters would be the same age as the viewers. 

But while this is good representation, as you get older, you find yourself going “WHY WOULD THE ADULTS LET THEM ENDANGER THEMSELVES?!”

Kids having to fight at that age does have consequences. Batman Beyond certainly addressed it. So did Steven Universe Future.

Steven ended up being responsible for so much, that when he no longer needed to take care of things, he was unsure of who he was. And then there’s the fact he ended up with PTSD because of him having to fight so much. Then you have the fact that Greg and Rose never intended to raise him like their caretakers did... but as good as their intentions were, they still caused damage. Rose for… all the gem stuff. And look, Greg is a great dad, but not enforcing anything for Steven when he’s growing up still has it’s cost.

With Batman, he’s obviously going to do his damn best to keep kids safe, including the Robins. But sometimes, it’s not enough. He wasn’t able to keep Tim safe in the event with the Joker in Batman Beyond. Where he was held captive and tortured.

But the Batkids are never expected to resolve this stuff by themselves. Because Batman knows how much you can get screwed up as a kid. He fucking cares.

And to be fair, in most continuities I’m aware of, the other sidekicks came out pretty okay overall.

Except Jason Todd.

So my proposal?

Have Val originally with Grimbor, as a sort of Protege. But have the legion capture him, only to go “uhhh this is a child with no powers”. And Superman, being the good, wholesome paragon we all love, takes him under his wing.

In all honesty, I want Superman pulling a batdad for Karate Kid in his intro episode the whole time. That was the best part of the episode for me.

Plus after the events of “Cry Wolf”, the Legion should examine the no-killing rule. Because they do need to kill Imperiex to save the universe. But that goes against the code. But they can argue it’s a necessity. But Mar Londo is also a monster. He’s the everyday monster some of us have grown up with.

When do you need to make exceptions to kill someone?

And my final main suggestion:

Add more Mekt.

What the heck were you guys expecting? You all KNOW me by now. I LOVE MY GARBAGE BOY.

Joking aside, here’s what I would do.

Have the Chained Lightning episode pushed back, but have Mekt with Imperiex earlier. Most of us would yell “Why the heck would you join the guy whose main goal is to destroy the galaxy?!” But this is one of the easiest things to address.

Explore more of his past. Use the comic sources with him being outcast for being a solo on Winath. With that in mind, him deciding to side with Imperiex can make sense.

Why try protecting something that has done nothing but hurt you?

There’s actually a pretty good reason why he would side with Imperiex, as seen in Champions and Lightning Storm. Remember, Mekt was willing to cheat to get ahead of the sports competition he was introduced in. And also was thrilled when fighting Garth and was beating him on his own. He likes being in power.

Imperiex offers him that.

As for why Imperiex would bother with Mekt? That’s a little harder to answer. He knows that Mekt has a soft spot for his brother, and in turn sister, which proves to be the reason why the Tachyon Cannon fails. You’d think Imperiex would remove a huge fatality.

But he doesn’t.

Maybe he could hold another type of value for Mekt. Perhaps... nostalgia?

I’m still sold on the idea that they were sleeping together.

Also, give us a conclusive answer on where Mekt stands with the LSV. In the comics, he was the leader, but that role was given to Tyr in the cartoon more or less.
