11. mori kei
mori kei, meaning forest sty;e, is a Japanese fashion subculture inspired by the calm, natural beauty of the forest and countryside. known for its earthy tones, layering, and vintage inspired aesthetics, mori kei captures a peaceful, whimsical lifestyle centered on a connection with nature. here's a break down on mori kei!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
origins and development
influence of nature: mori kei was born from a desire to embody a tranquil, forest like atmosphere. it emphasized living slowly, appreciating nature, and creating an aesthetic that feels like stepping into a fairytale
mori girl: mori keis popularity grew in the late 2000s through a Japanese social media community called mixing, where users shared photos of their mori inspired looks, the style was popularized by designers and mori kei icon choco yamada, who outlined the mori girl rules on mixing, helping solidify its distinct, dreamy aesthetic.
philosophy: mori kei is not only a style but a lifestyle rooted in minimalism, nostalgia, and simplicity. it often encompasses interests like photography, nature walks, drinking tea, and home made crafts!!1
key motifs
earth tones and natural colors: mori keis color palette includes soft, earthy hues like beige, cream, brown, olive, and moss green. muted pastels and off-whites are also used to create a delicate and harmonious feel, imitating the forest.
loose, layered silhouettes: the clothing in mori kei is loose fitting and layered to create a cozy, lived in look. layers of dresses, cardigans, oversized sweaters, shawls, and skirts are worn over each other to give an impression of softness and comfort.
vintage and handmade accessories: mori kei incorporates vintage inspired clothing, often resembles garments from simpler times. dresses with lace, floral prints, Peter pan collars, and earthy textures like wool, linen, and cotton are popular. items are sometimes handmade or thrifted to add a personal, nostalgic feel.
natural accessories: accessories in mori kei are inspired by nature--- think floral pins, straw hats, scarves, and woven bags. jewelry is kept simple and often handmade, featuring materials like wood, dried flowers, and stones
natural makeup and hair: makeup is usually kept minimal and natural, focusing on soft, rosy cheeks, and nude lips to give a gentle, healthy glow. hair is typically styled in loose waves, braids, or buns, and natural or warm hair colors like brown and dark blonde are common to match the earthy vibes or the outfit.
music
mori kei is often associated with peaceful and fold inspired music that eachoes the serene, introspective spirit of the forest. genres like acoustic, folk, and indie are popular, as are artists like iron & wine, fleet foxes, and Japanese indie artists such as ichiko aoba. instrumental and ambient music, including soft piano or nature sounds, are also fitting for mori kei enthusiasts who enjoy quiet moments of reflection. here are 10 artists I recommend
cocoon
iron & wine
fleet foxes
sufjan stevens
kina grannis
lisa mitchell
angus & Julia stone
first aid kit
soley
aoi teshima
movies
studio ghibli: films like my neighbor totoro, nausicaa of the valley of the wind. an princess mononoke, reflect the mori kei values of nature and simplicity. these films emphasize a harmonious connection with nature, which resonates with the mori kei aesthetics
period and fairy tale films: movies like the secret garden, and little women, feature vintage, countryside settings and styles that aligns with the look and feel of mori kei. the film Anne of green gables also embodies the quiet, pastoral lifestyle that mori kei represents. here are more movies I suggest
my neighbor totoro (1988)
only yesterday (1991)
the secret world of arrietty (2010)
wolf children (2012)
when marine was there (2014)
the tale of the princess kaguya (2013)
the fox and the child (2007)
the whisper of the heart (1995)
song of the sea (2014)
the village (2004)
books and other media
classic and nature inspired literature: books that emphasize the beauty of nature, simplicity =, and introspection are popular within mori kei. titles like Anne of green gables, the secret garden, and works by Jane Austen offer vintage inspired worlds that match mori kei aesthetic.
photography and nature journals: mori kei enthusiasts often enjoy photography that nature natures quiet moments -- forest trails, close ups of flora, and cozy indoor settings with vintage decor nature journals re also popular, where one con press flowers, write poetry, and record observations about nature.
social media: platforms like Instagram, Tumblr, and Pinterest have vibrant mori kei communities, where enthusiasts share their looks, document forest outings, and connect over shared interests in slow living and natural aesthetics
inspo

overall, mori kei is a fashion style and lifestyle that embodies peace, simplicity, and a connection to nature. with its soft, earthy palette, loose layering, and vintage inspired clothing, mori kei celebrates the beauty of the natural world and a quiet, introspective way of life. it offers an escape from the fast pace of modern life, creating a cozy, fairytale like world filled with warmth, comfort, and a deep respect for nature.

Airport log:
5:40 AM: Loud maybe-drunk guy in line behind me at security who started yelling at two panicking girls who cut in front of me and Dad. (This was unimportant to us, as by this point we had already missed our own plane.)
6:10 AM: As I'm walking by, lady notices me, turns sharply, asks anxiously if I have a spare mask. I give her one. There are now 2 people wearing N95s on this concourse. Her: "NONE of the stores here had any!" Me: "I know, it's ridiculous!"
6:15 AM: Third N95 wearer is in a wheelchair being pushed by a worried-looking airport employee. I sit down by empty gate, and employee almost immediately asks if she can park next to me.
6:25 AM: Loud maybe-drunk guy at terminal yelling at gate agents because "I have got to be on this plane" (it had already left) and then making excuses to the silent woman with him that "his people" have really messed this up. Not sure if same as 5:40 AM guy - I decline to look at him, and he keeps changing his voice depending on who he's talking to. I decide that the phone call he makes telling off "his people" is probably just him talking to himself.
9:00 AM: Larger airport that has international flights. Significantly larger number of N95 wearers.
9:10 AM: Guy working at Pizza Hut looks like his soul has left his body. I'm sorry, guy working at Pizza Hut.
9:30 AM: Sikh (?) guy in black Soundgarden t-shirt + coordinated all-black outfit including turban, sitting immediately behind lady in full Mori Girl/Lolita fusion getup: all earth tones, HUGE floppy bow on head. In competition, on some level.
11:30 AM: Two guys talking really loudly about hunting; one is traveling with tense lady holding rosary. She comments on my hat (too big, getting in the way); says that her husband convinced her not to pack hers because it'd be too big and would get in the way. Come on. I carried a 9-inch pizza onto the plane, too.

Style and Fashion inspiration checklist
(Personal reference for me)
Style Ideas
This is mostly to get inspirations of new ways of styling i want to try.
Zero Mori : has really cool outfit making videos. Their style is mostly reminiscent of mori girl and fairy grunge. I use this mostly to learn accessorizing
Clothesnbits : office outfit styles and it has a cool video format
Ceynbi : soft makeup looks for darker skin tones. currently working on expanding the types of makeup looks i wear i feel like it can really make the look standout.
KALI : another make up inspo , but mostly for more technical help in making skin look dewy.
lilrotini : For layering clothes. This serves as like my template for every look that i attempt to do. Important to use these concepts and match it to the clothes i have and my body shape
jesseogn : i particularly like this video of Japanese street fashion style because there's such a drastic differences in each style and everyone is very extra but somehow they have a coordination to their outfit which makes it work rather than just putting some items together.
Fashion knowledge
This is to identify why some pieces work well together and why others done , and why it work better on different people differently.
Bliss foster : More effective way of learning how clothes are made is from reading (at least for me). Reading and putting into simple practice is ideal. His channel playlists are filled with good reliable information.
Fashion shows from 90s : one of my favorite eras , it helps understand the vibe and aesthetic. There are many more free shows in you tube.
Drew Joiner : body types and silhouettes essentially (most important part of fashion to me )
Daily Helen : petite fashion silhouettes , good insight on how clothes work
Frugal aesthetic : opinions on fashion i guess , but good video

The original card is built from Apr 2022. https://redwing2000.tumblr.com/post/681962292199424000/
...
I have no chance to release and use this card after I build.
Although the current release one is v2 already. v1 from tumblr link. Fate front hair doesn't looks good for most angle. And I need to mention. I didn't make the coordinate. I usually just make the face. Then I would put it down.
For my usage. I just need a naked. Cut them into meat. There is no point for me making coordinate. Except of Rangarok Online girls... They naked, you never know those are RO girls.
I pack all Coordinate. For Fate - Long Hair - Twin Tail - Both of them but mirror the front hair
For Nanoha - Twin Tail (Short and Long) - Side Tail - Mirror the front hair
The reason why has mirror front hair.
This is the reason.
Both of them has same anime hair liked Ran Mori (just not that serious). Just make different coordinator if I need to shot her left or right face.

Buddy Daddies final character bios
The character bios on the website have been updated somewhat throughout the season, so my previous translations are slightly out of date. Now that the series is over, I figured I’d leave you with the final versions of the bios, all compiled in one place.
Kurusu Kazuki
28 years old, assassin
Birthday: 16th May
Voice actor: Toyonaga Toshiyuki
Lives with his colleague and buddy Rei, and looks after his daily needs. When working with Rei, his responsibilities are mostly arranging the contract, gathering intel in advance, and setting up the plan for execution. Excellent communication skills. Fond of women and gambling. Good at cooking and cleaning, and periodically chides Rei for his sloppy lifestyle. Was married in the past, and his wife was pregnant, but she died as a result of some shady business dealings. As penance for this, he sends part of his earnings to his wife’s younger sister, but she refuses to accept it.
Suwa Rei
25 years old, assassin
Birthday: 10th August
Voice actor: Uchiyama Koki
A man of few words. Usually doesn’t even bat an eye when Kazuki comes staggering home. Outstanding physical ability; at the top of the field in hand-to-hand combat and marksmanship. There is a drastic contrast between his ON (professional) and OFF (private) modes - at home, he just shuts himself in and plays games. Born into a large mob family, he received special assassin training from his father ever since his childhood. Unable to escape the conflicts in his family, he has no understanding of normal parent-child relationships.
Unasaka Miri
4 years old
Birthday: 8th November
Voice actor: Kino Hina
A truly lively, innocent girl who fears nothing. Showed up at a hotel in search of her father, and got caught up in a gunfight, but was rescued by Kazuki. Her father was a prominent human trafficker and a mafia boss; he was killed by Kazuki and Rei as one of their mission targets. Her mother was the boss’s lover. Miri’s favourite food is the hamburg steak her mother makes; she has no idea that she has been abandoned. An affectionate child, she calls Kazuki “Kazuki-papa”, and Rei “Rei-papa”.
Kugi Kyutaro
32 years old, cafe owner
Voice actor: Morikawa Toshiyuki
A go-between who coordinates jobs for Kazuki and Rei. Usually puts on a friendly demeanour as the owner of the cafe “Mistletoe”. Keenly perceptive, and remarkably well-informed. Knows a lot about Kazuki and Rei’s pasts, but for some reason, has never intervened, and keeps their relationship squarely within the limits of a business transaction. Generally acts like a kind older brother, but when a job goes wrong, will also readily discard all that to be completely businesslike. A reliable partner to Kazuki and Rei, but keeps them on their toes.
Ogino Ryo
Age unknown, assassin
Voice actor: Madono Mitsuaki
A killing machine who has murdered many people without a trace of emotion. He’s destroyed numerous organisations with his massive physique and overwhelming strength, and travels all over in search of work. Acquainted with Kyutaro. He is connected with the incident in which Kazuki’s wife died, but Kazuki is unaware of this.
Unasaka Misaki
34 years old, bar hostess and singer
Voice actor: Mori Nanako
Miri’s mother. After an affair with Miri’s father, who was a mafia boss, she had Miri as a single mother. Has bad luck with men, and leads a wild life.
Hanyu Anna
24 years old, daycare employee
Voice actor: Terui Haruka
A staff member at “Blue Sky Daycare”. Has a calm and gentle personality. The children call her “Anna-chan”. Not good at playing the piano.
Kurusu Yuzuko
25 years old at death
Voice actor: Ito Shizuka
Kazuki’s beloved wife. Passed away in an incident while pregnant.
Izumi Karin
22 years old, student
Voice actor: Hasegawa Ikumi
Yuzuko’s younger sister. Was sincerely delighted by her sister’s marriage to Kazuki. Plans to go abroad to study fashion in France.
Suwa Shigeki
Age unknown
Voice actor: Fuji Shinshu
Rei's father, and the boss of the organisation. Ever since Rei was a child, he drilled the techniques and mindset of an assassin into him. As head of the organisation, he shows no mercy even to family.
Kaji Satoru
40 years old
Voice actor: Kinoshita Hiroyuki
A member of the organisation. Taught Rei how to use firearms and handle missions.

dead by daylight's issues
i just watched SpookyLoopz's most recent video about how he feels currently with the shift of content in DBD, and he made some very valid points. i reccomend watching it before reading on.
tl;dr- he says that the two newest killers, The Knight and The Skull Merchant, are boring to play against and play as and that DBD is becoming stale.
i very much agree with this. i, myself, am a content creator (i stream on twitch- and am currently planning my revival after a two month long hiatus) and DBD is one of the main games i play. now, i didn't fully get into DBD until May/June 2022, roughly when The Dredge came out and the game was celebrating its 6th anniversary. I am still a baby at 300ish hours of playtime. even within the limited time i have interacted with the community, as well as playing the game and learning the ropes, there has been a serious shift in the culture surrounding the game. from metas to the camping/tunneling problem, these problems seem to have no end.
The community is going to be the thing that kills Dead by Daylight within the next year or so- i feel. im going to outline the main things that i see when playing myself.
playing survivor
while playing as a survivor (my main game mode), the tunneling and camping is horrendous- especially for persons like me who have TTV or YT in their username. there have been countless times where i was pushed out of a game because i am a streamer, or because other creators are in a lobby with me, they assume i am a part of a swf (survive with friends). ive also had killers that hold myself and my friends hostage since they assume we're streaming- not becuase we're creators, but becuase they think we are actively streaming in that moment.
another thing i see often is fellow survivors disconnecting seemingly randomly. now, i, myself, am guilty of disconnecting from a match- everyone has their moments- but the type im talking about is when they see a killer they dont like (im excluding The Plague and The Clown from this becuase emetophobia and colourophbia is real), if the killer brings a mori, or if they feel like they're losing after getting downed. i have played with someone who is toxic like this and it is insufferable because this puts you at such a disadvantage later in the game. stop abandoning teammates just because The Legion brought a mori. Killing yourself on hook to get out a game is still bad- dont get me wrong- but at least its more tolerable than straight up leaving.
the survivor meta is purely influenced by whatever the current killer meta is. dont ask me what is considered 'the meta' i dont know and dont care. i think you should run perks that suit your playstyle, not to be one with the crowd. if you wanna sneak around, be a gen jockey, get chased all game, make builds that will help you! coordinate with the friends that youre playing with! this makes the game so much more fun that using a build you saw a big time content creator use.
playing killer
oh boy, here we go.
to start off, i am a Sadako (The Onryo) and a Freddy (The Nightmare) main. Sadako is my number one best girl.
playing the killer is so stale and unbearable. from bully squads to toxic survivors its so much worse than it used to be. the highest rank i got to when i was playing everyday for 6-8 hours a day was Gold 2 (? i just remember being in gold) and it was amazing back then. nowadays people are bringing gen rushing builds and want to get in and out of games as soon as possible. dont even get me started on the end game shit talking people will do if you do bad as a prestige 12 killer.
the current killer meta, from my understanding (again i dont care about the meta), is generator regression and aura reading. i see a lot of pain res/dead mans switch (pain res blows up a generator and forces you off of it, when someone is hooked on the scourge hook, and dead mans blocks it for a short time- for those who are unfamiliar), call of brine/overcharge/pop goes the weasel/eruption being used interchangibly. its all about regressing gens from getting done. wheres the spice? how about tracking perks or chase perks? on Sadako i use a lot of aura reading because its useful with her power, same with Freddy. i never see killers using perks that work well with the killers power.
speaking of powers, lets talk about the two latest killers, The Knight and The Skull Merchant. they suck ass! the knight allows you to camp hooks without needing to be there, and the merchant can track you on the map with drones. these are doing very little to solve the tunneling/camping issue the game has. they are also really boring. their powers are meh, their chase music is meh, and the skull merchant doesnt even have a new map, just a refurbished shelter woods, tell me how thats fair.
final remarks
we as a community need to do better. need to be better. stop with the toxicity, the cheating, everything. i understand that this really isnt possible, people will still find exploits and play competitively, but there is a way to go about it that doesnt make you a piece of shit.
we cannot expect the devs to give us anything good if we buy up bullshit like the latest DLC. the only way to truly fix the tunneling, camping, and toxic players is to change as a community, to make the game fun again. the group that takes everything seriously and competitively is going to keep destroying the culture around this game until is so unberable that people who just want to have the slightest bit of fun go somewhere else.
i love Dead by Daylight. i really do. i've made some amazing friends and made a start to streaming with it. however i feel that if we dont change as a whole, its going to continue to grow staler and staler until its cold and barren.
#dead by daylight#essay#hopefully this makes sense#its like 2am and im half asleep writing this#but it had to be said#thank you for coming to my ted talk

But the town’s new fusion café changes everything. Between the Mori’s struggling shop and the Moreno’s plan to sell their bakery in the face of the competition, both boys find their dreams in jeopardy. Then Theo has an idea—sell photo-worthy food covertly at school to offset their losses. These Witches Don't Burn by Isabel Sterling
Hannah's a witch, but not the kind you're thinking of. She's the real deal, an Elemental with the power to control fire, earth, water, and air. But even though she lives in Salem, Massachusetts, her magic is a secret she has to keep to herself. If she's ever caught using it in front of a Reg (read: non-witch), she could lose it. For good. So, Hannah spends most of her time avoiding her ex-girlfriend (and fellow Elemental Witch) Veronica, hanging out with her best friend, and working at the Fly by Night Cauldron selling candles and crystals to tourists, goths, and local Wiccans. But dealing with her ex is the least of Hannah's concerns when a terrifying blood ritual interrupts the end-of-school-year bonfire. Evidence of dark magic begins to appear all over Salem, and Hannah's sure it's the work of a deadly Blood Witch. The issue is, her coven is less than convinced, forcing Hannah to team up with the last person she wants to see: Veronica. While the pair attempt to smoke out the Blood Witch at a house party, Hannah meets Morgan, a cute new ballerina in town. But trying to date amid a supernatural crisis is easier said than done, and Hannah will have to test the limits of her power if she's going to save her coven and get the girl, especially when the attacks on Salem's witches become deadlier by the day.
The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer
Two boys, alone in space. After the first settler on Titan trips her distress signal, neither remaining country on Earth can afford to scramble a rescue of its own, and so two sworn enemies are installed in the same spaceship. Ambrose wakes up on the Coordinated Endeavor, with no memory of a launch. There’s more that doesn’t add up: Evidence indicates strangers have been on board, the ship’s operating system is voiced by his mother, and his handsome, brooding shipmate has barricaded himself away. But nothing will stop Ambrose from making his mission succeed—not when he’s rescuing his own sister. In order to survive the ship’s secrets, Ambrose and Kodiak will need to work together and learn to trust one another… especially once they discover what they are truly up against. Love might be the only way to survive.

Afternoon everybody, I just finished watching the Flip A Coin documentary (and calming down afterwards) so you know what time it is! It’s…
✨REACTION TIME✨
Thoughts so far (not spoiler-free, read at your own risk):
Emotions. Just…emotions. I’m not entirely sure what I’m feeling but it sure is a lot.
I went into this documentary not knowing what to expect at all, but it really gave us everything. Behind-the-scenes stuff, really personal content about their lives and backstories, musical performances, EVERYTHING.
❣️❣️❣️TOMOYA WITH THE KIDS❣️❣️❣️That bit was so cute, he clearly loves his little toddlers (and his wife!) so much and watching him light up while he played with them was adorable. And the little baby at the end!!!
(I like that the camera crew gave him and his wife a bit of privacy when they said goodbye at the hospital though. Thanks for respecting them, camera crew.)
The bit with Taka and his dad made me feel things too. When Papa Mori said he could relate to Taka because he ran away from his own home at around the same age and didn’t want his son to go through the same things as him…it really gives a whole new perspective on their relationship. And he’s so proud of his son now!
It’s just such a touching reminder that all our parents are human too, and most of the time they’re just trying to do the best they can for their children and trying to protect them from the things they had to deal with. Sometimes it doesn’t work. Sometimes the results are very mixed. In the end, I think you just have to accept that your kids need to make some wrong choices and learn from some mistakes themselves and try to support them as best you can, and I think that’s what Papa Mori understood and did.
The bit where they talked about the pandemic was somehow…weirdly reassuring, for lack of a better word? To quote All Time Low, “I guess it feels good to know that I’m not alone.” My mental health really crashed and burned for large parts of the pandemic and it’s somehow good to know that they also felt trapped and had really bad days and everything.
I really feel for Taka though. He’s such an active, outgoing person who lives for performing and is always running all over the place doing things and trying new stuff, so not even being allowed to leave the house must’ve hit him extra hard. And Toru stuck in the hospital, interacting only with nurses in protective suits that covered everything but their eyes…I would’ve quite simply lost it. I’m glad they all came out okay.
Taka the mastermind was such a delight to watch though! I always knew he was a perfectionist and a visionary, but it was so fascinating to see just how much he coordinates the big picture and how high he always reaches. He was really the driving force behind this show and you can see it in everything he does.
Watching them perform again. Watching them perform again!! They all look so happy!!!
Absolutely loving all the bits from the Field of Wonder concert in this. A girl might just have to get her grabby hands on the DVD because wow!
I know opinions on “Wonder” are divided, but personally I enjoyed it a lot. It’s such a Taka song to me, it really carries his spirit and philosophy—the drive, the optimism, the burning passion and hunger for life and everything in it. And it’s got that high-pitched guitar solo thing in it like in “We Are” and it very much carries their handwriting across too. Looking forward to the official release tomorrow, I’ll be blasting this for sure!
Admin, shut up about Taka already—no, I won’t. Because watching him perform made him realize how much he’s not just a performer, but a natural-born entertainer. Let me compare him to my other fave vocalist for a sec, Joel Hokka from Blind Channel. They’re both people who were born to sing and perform, but their performance styles are very different—Joel is all about the contagious joy of music and being on stage while Taka is almost an actor, playing a lot with expressions and eye contact and dance moves and everything. I just think it’s fascinating.
The speech at the end, during “We Are”. I won’t even elaborate. Watch it and cry.
When the show ended and Taka started crying! And then everyone started crying!! And then the audience (me) almost started crying too!!!
It’s just. They’re all so close and they love each other dearly and they love what they do and they love performing so much. And Taka’s optimism is just…exactly what we needed last year, and exactly what we need now. Yes, Taka! I WILL live!! We will see each other again or so help me!!!
That’s all I can think of for now. If you made it to the end of this post, have a cookie. Feel free to add your own thoughts and clog everyone’s dash with this already overlong post.
TL;DR: The documentary was amazing and if you haven’t watched it already, do it ASAP. Admin out.
#i'm pretty sure you can get more thoughts out of me but this post is already way too long#one ok rock#flip a coin#wonder#reaction tag#analysis tag#unquote#long post

[ it takes two to tango ]
pairing: chuuya nakahara x f!reader
word count: 2.4k words
contains: enemies but they flirt a lot basically, so much sexual tension and teasing, flirty!y/n, fight scenes and dance scenes basically carry the same amount of sexual tension and i will die on this hill
summary: chuuya runs into you, his arch-nemesis, again at a masquerade ball on a mission and reluctantly allies himself with you to fulfill the same goal
a/n: okay here’s ANOTHER chuuya fic from your resident chuuya fangirl. this is my first time writing an enemies to lovers-ish fic and i had so much fun with the setting and sexual tension here so i hope you guys like it
▸ 🎕 ┈┈┈┈ 🎕 ┈┈┈┈ 🎕 ┈┈┈┈ 🎕 ┈┈┈┈ 🎕 ◂
chuuya was being watched, he could feel it ever since he walked into the large mansion on undercover mission that mori sent him out to do. at first, he didn’t think much of it since he was going to a masquerade ball, after all. of course there would be a few girls or two who’s eyes he managed to catch.
except, when he went off on his own inside the mansion to search for info on the enemy faction’s leader, who also happened to be hosting the party, he could tell he was now being followed. chuuya wasn’t particularly alarmed, he could handle anyone by himself. but he was pretty pissed off when he realized who those familiar footsteps, that grew nearer than ever, belonged to.
without hesitation, chuuya pulled out his knife and whirled around to face a pistol directed at his face. even with the black, feathered mask covering half your face, chuuya would recognize his arch-nemesis anywhere.
he watched your red lips curl up in a smirk. “fancy seeing you here, nakahara,” you purred.
“fuck, you again?” chuuya growled, not lowering his knife.
“try as you might, i’m afraid you just can’t avoid me,” you said, lowering your gun. “so, you’re looking into boss tanaka too, huh? i’m afraid i already searched his office before you came in.”
“that so?” chuuya snorted, mentally cursing himself for not coming earlier. but then, you were always just one step ahead of him.
you and chuuya had been arch-nemeses ever since you crossed paths at a mission a few years ago. he had never heard of you at all and knew very well that you weren’t part of any organization. rather, you worked alone as a paid criminal: assassinating anyone or stealing information all depending on who your boss was. if you were from an enemy organization, chuuya would have thought better of you.
“unfortunately not,” you sighed, raising the skirt of your scarlet dress and tucking your gun away in the holster strapped to your thigh. chuuya tried not to let his eyes linger too long on this show off skin and realized, with a lot of discomfort, that you looked really good tonight. the dress you wore complimented the color of your lipstick and fit you like a glove, hugging your curves in all the perfect places. your hair was even done up too.
“like what you see?” you smirked at him, causing chuuya to blush and dart his eyes away, only for you to chuckle at his response. “don’t worry, you’re not the only one enjoying the view tonight,” you winked. unlike chuuya, you were a tad bit more, upfront, about your attraction to him. after all, he was an amazing fighter and ability user, a port mafia executive, and very good-looking to top it all off. and tonight, he was especially stunning in his dark gray suit and the white mask that covered his eyes and part of his left cheek.
oh, if only you two weren’t enemies. but then again, sometimes working together had its benefits.
“boss tanaka’s downstairs mingling with the guests. i recognized a few of his co-executives there with him,” chuuya said, walking ahead down the hallway and back to the dance floor.
“oho? are you suggesting we team up for a bit?” you raised an eyebrow at him.
“only until we get what we need, l/n,” chuuya flashed you a look. “after that, it’s free for all, like always.”
“you got it,” you mused as the two of you entered the ballroom of the masquerade ball. you were thankful for the theme giving you an opportunity to look less inconspicuous after you snuck in uninvited. the two of you scanned the sea of masked guests before spotting the unmistakable large figure and bald head of your target in the middle of the dance floor, chatting with a few of his associates.
“alright, follow my lead,” you said, holding your hand out to chuuya.
“your lead?” he said, looking at your hand with more than a hint of suspicion. you rolled your eyes at him.
“how do you expect us to get close and listen on him without drawing attention?”
chuuya looked from you to the dance floor and understood what you were talking about. still, “no way am i dancing with you.”
“how come? don’t know how?” you mocked, grinning at the infuriated look on chuuya’s face as he grabbed your hand and pulled you with him to the dance floor.
“you’re following my lead,” he said lowly, placing a hand behind your back and pulling you close. you two were inches apart and up close, you could smell chuuya’s usual cologne and the faintest hint of cigarette smoke. then slowly, the two of you began to move with the music.
chuuya had only happened to learn dancing, from koyou-san of course, when he realized it was useful for certain missions and mingling with a crowd. he was confident with his skill and maneuvered the two of you effortlessly through the dance floor and getting within earshot of boss tanaka. the whole point of dancing with you was to get in close and overhear his plans.
except, chuuya was unbelievably distracted by how close you were to him. everything from your the intensity of your gaze as you listened into your target’s conversation, to the warmth of your bare arm against his, to the scent of your perfume, was enough to make him feel more than a little warm. damn it, was he attracted to you now?
“one a.m., tonight,” you suddenly leaned in to whisper in his ear. with a start, chuuya realized you were relaying the info you just heard. “they’ll leave for yokohama tower and conduct the trade there. they’ve got a buyer for the information we’re after. about no less than a billion yen, would you believe?” you chuckled.
“good,” chuuya nodded, leading you away to the middle of the dance floor when he felt your grip tighten.
“you’re not thinking of leaving me here, are you?” you narrowed your eyes at him.
“why? so that you can screw me over sooner?”
“there’s still a few hours until one a.m, it would be strange for us to leave, don’t you think?” you said innocently, smiling when the live orchestra began to play a livelier music piece. “we’ve got time to kill.”
talking to you constantly felt like making deals with a devil. previous experience told chuuya to drop you here right here and now. but the need to be kept on his toes around you was terribly exciting. it was a different kind of rush that chuuya couldn’t get from fighting even the strongest of opponents.
and you were the only one who could give it to him.
chuuya noticed the shift in the music at the same time you did and without warning, moved his hand down to your lower back and dipped you close to the floor. reading his movements, you smirked and wrapped your leg around his as chuuya lowered you.
“good choice, nakahara,” you said, drawing out the syllables of his name and leaning in to whisper in his ear. “it takes two to tango, after all.”
...
years of running into each other in missions and having to fight only made you and chuuya familiar with each other’s movements. when you danced, you were in complete coordination that you didn’t even have to think about where to move your feet. the fact that your faces were partially hidden by masks did nothing to remove the intensity behind your gazes and by the end of the dance, both of you were breathless.
dancing was almost no different from fighting. of course there was movement involved, a whirlwind of limbs but this time with weapons in hand. and then, there was trust involved. but the trust you placed in your dance partner to lead was very different in the trust you placed with a rival who happened to be fighting for your side momentarily.
“well, well, guess we have no choice but to beat all these guys up,” chuuya smirked, shrugging out of his jacket and draping it carefully against the fire exit ladder. he wasn’t sure if he was going to get a chance to fight some people tonight but the chance presented itself when you two barged into the trade-off on top of yokohama tower.
“i’m sure you enjoy that immensely,” you sighed, eyeing all the mafioso members surrounding boss tanaka that now had you and chuuya surrounded on all sides.
“why, tired?” he taunted you.
“no,” you snorted, taking out your pistol and loading a new magazine. “i just bought this fucking dress.”
“do you two really think you could get out of this situation?” boss tanaka sneered. you and chuuya broke in right before the trade-off actually happened and he tucked the USB containing the information you two were after into his pocket. maybe he was right to think that, after all he had one of the largest organizations in yokohama second only to the port mafia itself. he dealt in the illegal weapons trade in the city and you could bet that your new client and the port mafia were hoping to take over that.
but you were a highly-paid mercenary for a reason and chuuya nakahara was the port mafia’s best fighter. this was child’s play at most.
chuuya rolled up his sleeves and got into his fighting stance beside you. “try not to drag me down, l/n.”
“speak for yourself, nakahara.”
and with that, the two of you sprung into action. chuuya, not letting his ability to give an unfair advantage, dodged bullets left and right before sending kick after kick, knocking opponents down to the ground. he easily dodged a punched aimed at his jaw and gripped a man’s arm before throwing him over his back. once he pulled out his knife to use it, he was even more deadly.
as much as he hated to admit it, you caught up with him with easily. you had both pistols out at ready, firing them at your opponents without missing a single shot. your movements were practically seamless, filling in for each other’s blind spots and hitting targets with just the briefest of signals.
at one point, chuuya whirled around to find one of your pistols pointed at him. without a second thought, he moved his head a fraction to the side as a bullet whizzed past his cheek to hit someone behind him.
“that was a bit too close, don’t you think?” he growled at you.
“you really think i’d be dumb enough to kill you with a bullet?” you snorted, walking past him to where boss tanaka now lay on the ground, bleeding from the gunshot wound.
“im- impossible. those were my best fighters,” he coughed, staring up at you.
“well, rest assured, they did put up a fight,” you smiled sweetly before reaching into his jacket pocket and pulling out the USB you were after. “what do you think’s in here?”
“trade routes, probably,” chuuya said, taking his jacket and slipping into it again before stuffing his hands in his pockets and addressing you. “so, how are we going to do this?”
“well, i was the one who killed boss tanaka,” you raised your eyebrows at him, tossing the USB up and down in your hand.
“yeah, but i killed more of his henchmen,” chuuya reasoned.
“those are henchmen. everyone knows it doesn’t end until you take the boss.”
“any one of those henchmen could have killed you if i hadn’t taken them out first.”
you sighed. “i really don’t feel like fighting you tonight, nakahara.”
“let’s just get it over and done with then, l/n,” chuuya cracked his knuckles and before you knew it he had you bent over backwards against the railing of the rooftop with his hand wrapped around your neck. you tried to move but the red glow around chuuya’s body and the heaviness around you suggested that it was futile.
“no... fair... ability,” you choked out. now it was chuuya’s turn to smirk as he had you right where he wanted you.
“l/n, you’re the last person who gets to talk to me about what’s fair,” he said, plucking the USB out of your hand and tucking it into the pocket of his shirt before finally letting you go. you gasped for air, massaging your throat as you glared at chuuya. “that’s what you get for double-crossing me last time.”
“guess i kinda deserve it after slashing your motorcycle tires,” you laughed.
“go to hell, l/n.”
“are you asking me out on a date, nakahara?”
“you wish.”
“one last thing,” you sauntered up to chuuya, your bodies as close as they were earlier while dancing. he braced himself for anything else you might pull. you raised a hand and for a moment, chuuya thought you were going to make another grab for the USB, only for you to lean in and plant a kiss on his cheek.
he was beyond surprised and it took all of chuuya’s willpower to appear uninterested when he could feel his cheeks burning from the contact. the amused smile playing on your lips only aggravated him more.
“the hell was that for?” he scowled.
“just wanted to see how you’d react,” you shrugged nonchalantly, sliding your pistols back into their holsters. “until next time, nakahara,” you waved before stopping by the door that you two came in and looking at him over your shoulder. “maybe sooner than you think.”
...
chuuya shrugged out of his jacket and took off his mask as soon as he got into his car. it had been a long night, especially after running into you, and he wanted nothing more than to get home, take a long, relaxing shower, and get as much sleep as he could before going to the office later that day.
but before all of that, chuuya took out the USB that he had spent all night trying to get and opening his laptop to check its contents. however, when he finally opened it to find a single .txt file inside, he knew something was wrong.
“fucking bitch,” he cursed under his breath, realizing that you must have swapped out the actual USB for one that you brought with you when you kissed him earlier. it was even more frustrating when chuuya remembered that he was caught completely off-guard by it.
after collecting himself, he finally opened the .txt file, even though he knew it would just contain a gloating message from you. but the message was just two words, typed beside what appeared to be your phone number.
chuuya could almost hear your voice as he read it: call me.
