Little health update (as a disabled person) to anyone who's curious

I started using forearm crutches in August, and it's been amazing. They help me move around better and keep less fatigue and make morestable, its wonderful to have that freedom back. It's been kind of odd to have to explain to people but for the most part they're pretty accepting and understanding with a few exceptions.

I went through a steroid trial in July. Basically the idea behind it was to see if my condition is inflammatory because if it helped a lot then it likely is, and if it's inflammatory a rheumatologist is more likely to see me. It was during when I had band camp, something that would usually cause a lot of pain and fatigue and I was actually fine. At that same time I did strain a muscle in my neck though so that was not great.

I've been having some flare days recently. I've had to keep from doing things for pain or weakness but it hasn't been as bad as I've had before, so that's nice. I think fatigue has been the biggest issue recently, I need a lot of rest and I don't really have the chance to get it, and I get exhausted very easily.

I'm a bit concerned that I might have either a heart condition or a swollen axillary lymph node, or I guess it could be both. Swollen lymph node makes sense because I have lyme disease and that can cause that, and the symptoms mostly line up. The only reason I think it might not be is because it's not just in the one side and it's not always in the same place. I kind of have mild symptoms of what your typical heart attack symptoms would be. Dull, deep pressure in various areas of my chest and arm, along with pain in my back and neck, though those two could easily just be because of other disabilities. Its often on my left side, but I get it on my right too. So it could be something like an angina but also I'm not really at risk of heart disease (especially angina) because I am young and thin. I do have heart failure in my family though, so you never know.

I need to make a follow up appointment anyway, so I'll be sure to mention it when I go. Hopefully it's nothing serious but I suppose we'll see.

Overall I've been doing pretty well though. Feel free to share your own experiences!

So, you know I like to do the pilgrim-esper with all unstable genomes. I made one with a random name, Mumushworum or something, and... he died immediately. Obviously.

So I said, okay, fine, I'll try some actual abilities. So I gave him purely defensive mutations—force bubble, teleport (to get out of danger), teleport other (to get danger out of me), and precognition (to check if there's danger). And, of course, quantum jitters. Love me them spacetime vortices. I named him after the last stillbirth, and called him Mumu the Wayfarer.

...except I accidentally took force wall, not force bubble. Mulligan!

So he came back as Mumu the Foolish Wayfarer, and... he's actually making progress! This is my first pilgrim to make it through Golgotha. The reason is I like a lot of useless and/or self-destructive abilities. Head explodey is my favorite, but since plants, slimes, and robots—the bulk of the enemies in this game, honestly—don't have minds, there's nothing to melt. I also like stunning force, which hits myself, and disintegration, which exhausts me for three rounds, during which the slumberling that someone woke up gets free hits.

So, purely defensive this time... which led to a slow start, of course. Well, I got to level 5 for free, going to the Stilt and donating my starting books, and with those mutation points, I opted to buy a new one and try to get some offensive powers. My options were: time dilation... not a very offensive ability. Could be useful defensively, but, I had enough defense. Second two were from a mod: psychobrachiomancy, which lets me create psychic arms... to do what with? The only weapon I had was the starting staff, and also I've got low strength and toughness so going about it melee would be no good. This was hydropartuma. This gives you the active ability torrent, which shoots water.

Due to the Curse of Jewel, I'm affinitated toward water. I want my mind esper pilgrim to have purely mind powers, which it technically is, but I mean more like mind sunder. Still! I need power, and this was it. The way it works is it shoots a cone of water that knocks enemies away, and deals damage for each tile they move. It's kind of counterintuitive, I guess limitations with what the modders could do, so if a guy resists knockback you only get one tick of damage, and if they're against a wall you only get one tick, and also, it doesn't go into fog of war, so even if it's level 10 and stretches across the screen, if you have a puny torch, you only get a few tiles. Nonetheless, it's an attack.

Anyway, between force bubble, hydropartuma, and my laser rifle, I've been doing pretty good. He's up to level 24 (my highest-ever is 28, our wee weed, who died in no spoilers but it rhymes with Mainbow Morest) and through Golgotha. I don't know what I'm going to do about Bethesda Susa, though. My previous character got one-shotted by the trolls there, and the sprout got through by burgeoning the everloving fuck out of the area. I read a book that taught me to deploy turrets, so maybe I'll bring those extra lightning guns and just set up a perimeter and then hide in my bubble, let them do all the work.

Also, it took a goddamned while, but I finally found a dromad that sells crysteel, so I can start getting some decent stuff aside from the junk that goats drop, so that's nice. I did find a fullerite maul early on, somehow, but that's my backup in case my laser runs out of batteries.

Speaking of defensive, I'm carrying three recoilers at all times, in case two get rusted. My motto is "Don't Push Your Luck," so whenever anything, I think: no, just leave. I got the droid at the bottom of Golgotha and said, should I take on the slug? No—recoiled without ever seeing him. I keep precog or teleport on cooldown so when I use torrent and proc two spacetime vortices, which might collide and kill me instantly, I can teleport away, or see the future and try to just run. If all else fails, jump in, and teleport home after.

...which is nice unless there's baddies at the other end of the hole! I did that once, and found a flock of quartz baboons, which I didn't know where a thing? I started lasering them and, hey, guess what! They can reflect laser. They're also resistant to knockback. So, it was dicey, but there was a glowfish by a pond at the other end of the room. I was able to use that to teleport some distance away, get to the next screen, and recoil back home. I was kind of reluctant to do it, though, they were worth a lot of experience...

I've only tried Bethesda Susa three times ever. The first guy got poisoned by some snails below the troll spas. The second one cleared the whole thing, though it was an Adventure. The third guy got killed by the first troll. As for Mumu? He's prepared to run as soon as anything. In fact... I think he'll go get another four levels and try to buy himself a new power! Last time he got... psychotelemetry. So he knows the blueprint to everything, but doesn't actually have any tinkering ability. Great. You can pick from three mutations when you buy one, and it seems to be the next purchase is fixed. I used precog to preview my options, and it was telemetry and a could less interesting, or at least less thematic, things. I gained some more levels and did it again... same options. Kept trying, standing here or there, same options. So, it's set in stone. Well, maybe next time I can get head explodey, and just blow up the trolls' brains from the far corner. We'll see.
