On this date, [September 4] in 1781, the city of Los Angeles was founded. This episode is part of African American history and heritage.l

Originally established as El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles, the second largest city in America was founded by 44 pobladores (people of color) from (then) New Spain, now called Mexico. The heads of the eleven founding families were Antonio Clemente Villavicencio, a Spaniard; Antonio Mesa, a Negro; Jose Fernando Lara, a Spaniard, Jose Vanegas, an Indian; Pablo Rodriquez, and Indian; Manuel Camero, a Mulatto; Jose Antonio Navarro, a Mestizo; Jose Moreno, a Mulatto; Basillio Rosas, an Indian; Alejandro Rosas, an Indian; and Luis Quintero, a Negro. The two Spaniards and three Indians had Indian wives; the remaining six had Mulatto wives. Despite their varied racial background, they shared a common language, culture and religion since all were Spanish subjects and Catholics.

The first Spanish civilian settlement in Southern California, the pueblo helped provide food for the soldiers in the presidios and secure Spain's hold on California. When an election was held in Los Angeles in 1788, Jose Vanegas, an Indian, became its first mayor. Manuel Camero, a Mulatto, and Felipe Garcia were elected to the first city council a year later. Juan Francisco Reyes, an early Mulatto settler served as mayor from 1793- 1795. Originally the owner of the San Fernando Valley Rancho, he traded it to the Franciscans in 1797 so they could establish a mission there. Tiburcio Tapla, the grandson of a Negro, Felipe Tapia, became a powerful figure in Los Angeles after 1833 serving three times as mayor and later as a judge. Catarina Morengo, granddaughter of the Mulatto founder Jose Moreno, married General Andres Pico of the famous Pico family. Her brother-in-law, Pio Pico was the last Governor of California under the Mexican regime. The Pico brothers had some Indian & African ancestors and central Los Angele’s Pico Boulevard is named after the family.

Several descendants of the Negro founder Luis Quintero are living in Los Angeles today. A grandson served as mayor of Santa Barbara; Eugene Biscailuz, a great grandson, as sheriff of Los Angeles. Maria Valdez, a granddaughter, once owned the rancho, which is now known as Beverly Hills. These are only a few of the many individuals of varied backgrounds who made important contributions to the development of Los Angeles, a great cosmopolitan city that now ranks second largest in the United States of America.

Synopsis: 

“Stanley Yelnats, a boy who has bad luck due to a curse placed on his great- great-grandfather, is sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention camp, for a crime he did not commit. Stanley and the other boys at the camp are forced to dig large holes in the dirt every day. Stanley eventually realizes that they are digging these holes because the Warden is searching for something. As Stanley continues to dig holes and meet the other boys at the camp, the narrator intertwines three separate stories to reveal why Stanley's family has a curse and what the Warden is looking for.When he was a boy, Stanley's great-great-grandfather, Elya Yelnats, received a pig from Madame Zeroni, a gypsy, in exchange for a promise. Elya's promise was that after the pig grew strong he would carry Madame Zeroni, who only had one leg, up a mountain and sing her a song that she had taught him. After becoming disillusioned with the girl he thought he loved, however, Elya hops a boat to America, forgetting his promise to Madame Zeroni. Elya marries and has a child in America and always thinks about Madame Zeroni, who he believes has cursed him because of his failure to fulfill his promise. He knows that Madame Zeroni's son lives in America, but Elya never finds him.One hundred and ten years before Stanley arrives at Camp Green Lake, the town of Green Lake is a beautiful place where peach trees bloom throughout the spring. In this Texas town, the schoolteacher, Katherine Barlow, falls in love with Sam, the onion seller. Sam sells onions to eat and to use for medicinal purposes. While Katherine and Sam are alive, racism is institutionalized in the United States and it is against the law for a black man to kiss a white woman. Because Sam is black and Katherine is white, the people in the town become irate when they find that Katherine and Sam have kissed. Charles, or Trout, Walker, the richest man in town has always wanted to marry Katherine. He is already mad that Katherine does not wish to go out with him so when he finds out that she is in love with Sam he gathers the townspeople to burn the schoolhouse and attack Sam. Katherine seeks help from the local sheriff but instead finds that the sheriff, who makes lewd advances towards her, also wants to kill Sam. Katherine and Sam attempt to escape but their boat is destroyed while only half way across the lake and Sam is killed. Katherine is driven mad by her grief and becomes an outlaw known as Kissin' Kate Barlow. Her name refers to the fact that she kisses the men she kills, leaving a lipstick imprint of her lips on their faces. In her twenty years of robbing people in the west, she happens to rob Stanley's great- grandfather while he is on his way from New York to California. She buries Stanley's great-grandfather's money somewhere and even though Charles Walker and his wife Linda try to torture her into revealing its location, Kate dies before anyone can find out where the money is hidden. After the day that Sam is killed, rain stops falling on Green Lake and the lake dries up.Because Green Lake dries up, the citizens of the town all move away and by the time that the land is serving as Camp Green Lake, the only people there are juvenile delinquents. Stanley has a hard time digging holes there due to the incredible heat and the hard, dry land. At one point Stanley digs up half of a lipstick tube that has the initials KB on it. Stanley knows that the Warden, who happens to be a descendent of Charles and Linda Walker, is interested in this find and he speculates that perhaps Kate Barlow used to live in the area. The other boys at the camp are tough and all have nicknames. Stanley tries to stay in the good graces of X-Ray, the obvious leader of the group but this becomes harder as Stanley becomes better friends with a boy named Zero. Although Stanley and Zero, also known as Hector Zeroni, do not know it, Hector is the great- great-great-grandson of Madame Zeroni. Zero eventually runs away from camp and Stanley, in an effort to save him, follows after a few days. The two help each other to reach the top of a big mountain, which turns out to be Sam's old onion field. Because Zero is very weak, Stanley carries him up this mountain. They survive on onions for more than a week and then return to camp, planning to search for Kate Barlow's treasure in the hole where Stanley found the lipstick tube.Stanley and Zero find a suitcase that has the name Stanley Yelnats on it. Although the Warden attempts to take the suitcase from them, Stanley's lawyer, Ms. Morengo, arrives to say that Stanley has been proven innocent and Stanley and Hector are able to leave the camp with the suitcase. It turns out that the suitcase contains many valuable items and is in fact the same suitcase that Kate Barlow took from Stanley's great-grandfather, also named Stanley Yelnats, so many years ago.At the end of the book, it seems that the Yelnats family curse is lifted. Hector is reunited with his mother, from whom he was separated many years ago and Stanley's father finally succeeds in inventing something: a cure for foot odor. While at Camp Green Lake, Stanley has improved his physical strength and his self-confidence in addition to making a true friend. While fate has so often seemed against Stanley, in the end it serves to help him, his family, and Hector.“

The end of camp.

Stage 6, (I have a personal code of behavior and I follow it)

Wow, it has come this far. I feel like camp was actually a good lesson. Even though I did not do anything, it was kind of fun. Well, now I am back home. It feels weird. I was at the camp for so long. I still remember the face when everyone realized I am innocent. I can't believe my friend was the one that stole the sneakers. "so you couldn't have stolen them." That is what Ms. Morengo said. Zero then said "He didn't. I did" (Sachar 100). I am still surprised that the camp closed. When I got home, a little time later I look at the news and what do you know, "The Attorney General closed Camp Green Lake" (Sachar 100). But to be honest, I feel like this is going to have a big impact on my life. I'm not a shy kid anymore. I feel different like I have my own behavior that I follow. Throughout the years I don't think that I will forget camp Green Lake. It will always hold a special place in my heart.

Itališka morenga

ITALIŠKA MORENGA - tikrai kietas riešutėlis. Sakau, nes žinau. Sakau, nes keli bandymai ją suprasti ir perprasti, įskaitant ir entuziazmą, iškeliavo šiukšliadėžėn. O po kelerių metų entuziazmas rado kelią atgal, užrišo man prijuostę, privertė tikėti rašytiniais ir sakytiniais šaltiniais (pastarasis buvo vienas, nes niekas mano aplinkoje, apart mamos, jos nėra gaminęs), liepė akylai stebėti verdamo sirupo burbuliukų tekstūrą ir plakti...be paliovos plakti tol, kol inde rasis neįsivaizduojamo purumo elastinga saldžiarūgštė masė. Baimė įveikta, darbas nudirbtas, su žaislais pažaista - einu ieškoti medalio ir kaisti vandens arbatai.

Čia tekstas iš kažkada - tada dar nė svajot nesvajojau apie jokius ten tinklaraščius. Tąkart, dideliam mano džiaugsmui, pavyko. Bet, kaip dažnai man nutikdavo iki šiol, nei kur pasirašiau ką, nei žymėjausi. Matyt, įsivaizdavau, kad darytos klaidos jau niekad nepasikartos. Mama pagelbėt irgi nebegalėjo - kremą paskutinį kartą ji maišė gal prieš 30 metų...Liko knygos, internetas ir draugė, kuri, mums bešnekant telefonu, prisipažino, kad gaminimo procesą, sužinotą iš manęs (o čia tai naujiena!) dar mokyklos laikais (negaliu patikėti tuo, ką girdi mano ausys ar, tiksliau, ausis), ne tik nešiojasi su savimi, bet ir nuolat gamina. 

Knygos lyg ir tiko, internetas baisiausiai nuvylė, nes niekus tauškiančių aptikau daugiau, nei norėjosi, o draugės patarimai išmušė iš vėžių - morengą ji daro iš akies. Tu tik pagalvok - iš akies!

Iš akies daryti, aišku, galima, bet tik tada, kai gamini ne pirmą, penktą ar dešimtą kartą - dvidešimtu, manau, pasikliauti jau galima. Todėl šį bei tą patarsiu.

Bendri patarimai norintiems pagaminti itališką morengą:

Kremui imkite dvigubai didesnį cukraus kiekį, nei sveria baltymas. Pvz., jei baltymai sveria 70 g., reikės 140 g cukraus.

Plakiklio šluotelė turi būti sausa ir jokiais būdais ne riebaluota, antraip baltymų standžiai neišplaksite. Gaminantieji sako, kad šluotelę reikia nuvalyti spiritu ar degtine, bet niekada to nedariau, o jums pašnibždėsiu - niekada neleiskite jos plauti sutuoktiniui ar vaikams ir viskas bus gerai. Jei jie primygtinai nori padėti mamai ar žmonai, turite 2 pasirinkimus. Vienu atveju akylai stebėkite procesą (ar tikrai plovė naudodami indų ploviklį, kuris pašalina riebalus. Ir ar tikrai plovė karštu, o ne šaltu vandeniu). Arba, pagalbininkams nematant, šluotelę perplaukite - neskausminga ir nieko neįžeidžianti procedūra. 

Jei tinkamai neįvertinote verdamo sirupo tirštumo ir kremas, kad ir ilgai plakamas netirštėja, įdėkite kelis šaukštus cukraus pudros ir išplakite. Žinoma, tai nusižengimas technologijai, o ir sustingusi morenga bus kiek kietesnė, bet gudruoliais negimstama - jais tampama. Todėl turėkite kantrybės ir užsispyrimo - kitą kartą dirbsite atidžiau ir papildomo tirštiklio  (cukraus pudros pavidalu)   nereikės.  

Tarkim, kremą pagaminote ir jau papuošėte sausainius, bet pastebėję, kad net praėjus pusdieniui kremo paviršius gražiai blizga ir yra lipnus, gaminius kiškite į 50*C karštumo orkaitę, šiek tiek praverkite dureles ir kokią valandžiukę pašildykite. Itališkos morengos kremas turi sukietėti be orkaitės, bet nors šitas veiksmas atitolins nuo originalo, tai bus tikrai geriau, nei supykus viską išmesti lauk. 

Šis kremas dažytas burokėlių milteliais - matot mažus taškelius? Miltelių netirpiau, nes taškiukai man gražu.

Morengai reikės:

- 2 (67 g) kiaušinio baltymų;

- 134 g cukraus;

- 3 v. š. vandens;

- šiek tiek druskos;

- 1/2 a. š. rūgščios druskos;

- maistinių dažų (nebūtinai).

Gaminimas:

Cukrų berti į puodelį, įpilti vandens ir užkaisti. Pradžioje pamaišyti, bet kai sirupas užvirs, maišymą nutraukti. Kai sirupo paviršiuje pasirodys dideli burbulai, pradėti plakti baltymus (plakant įberti druskos). Baltymus plakti tol, kol tūris sutirštės ir padvigubės (patrigubės), o apvertus indą jie pasiliks vietoje.

Grįžti prie verdamo sirupo. Kai paviršiuje rasis sunkūs burbulai (o ir spalva turi būti kiek patamsėjusi), o į šalto vandens stiklinę įlašintas sirupas ne išsisklaidys, o gražiai nusės dugne, galima pradėti! Karštą ar, tiksliau, verdantį sirupą plona srovele pilti į plakamus baltymus (pilti ne ant šluotelės, o į pačius baltymus). Nenustoti plakti - kremas pradės formuotis ne tuoj pat, o gal kokią 5-ą plakimo minutę. Kai ims tirštėti, įberti rūgščios druskos ir vis plakti. Kai kremas sutirštės, įmaišyti maistinių dažų.

Jei baisu rizikuoti, naudokite maistui skirtą termometrą - kai jo stulpelis, įkištas į verdamą sirupą pasieks 118-119*C temperatūrą, galima jį pilti į plakamus baltymus. 

Kremas susiformuoja 8-10 plakimo minutę.

Kremui sutirštėjus, dėti jį konditerinį maišelį su pasirinkto dydžio antgaliu ir raityti visokius gražumynus ar puošti iš anksto tam reikalui keptus sausainius. Beje, itališka morenga buvo puoštas senelio gimtadienio tortas su itališkais sūriais ir matcha - kai kuriuos papuošimus raičiau ant medinių pagaliukų, o vėliau juos susmaigsčiau į tortą

Kremas, jei pagamintas teisingai, sukietėja savaime, be jokio kaitinimo. Ir tas kietumas nuostabus - paviršius tvirtas, o prakandus vidus subyra kaip sniegas sausą žiemos dieną.

Ingredients for making the Chicken Morengo 1 1/2 pounds boneless chicken breasts (sliced) 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 3 to 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 large sliced onion 1/2 sweet sliced bell pepper 2 tablespoons butter 8 ounces sliced mushrooms 2 pressed garlic cloves 1/2 cup dry white wine 1 cup chicken stock (preferably no-sodium or low-sodium) 1 (14 1/2-ounce) can diced tomatoes 1/2 lemon juice 2 tablespoons tomato paste 3 sprigs parsley 1 bay leaf Salt to taste 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper For Garnishing – 2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley Method of making Put the chicken and flour in a food storage bag and shake to coat the pieces thoroughly and keep aside. In the skillet over medium heat, sauté the onions and sliced bell pepper, in 2 to 3 tablespoons of the olive oil until translucent, Keep a side. Add the remaining 2 to 3 tablespoons olive oil to the pan and heat over medium heat. Add the coated chicken to the pan and sauté, turning frequently, until browned. Remove the chicken to a plate and set aside. Add the butter to the pan and heat over medium-low heat. Add the mushrooms and sauté until tender and lightly browned–about 3 to 4 minutes. Add the garlic and continue cooking for a minute until it get sweat. Pour the wine into the pan and cook until almost evaporated. Add the chicken stock, tomatoes, lemon juice, and tomato paste. Blend well and bring to a boil. Add the chicken and vegetables back to the pan along with the parsley sprigs and bay leaf. Taste and add salt and pepper, as needed. Reduce the heat to low. Cover the pan and simmer for about 10 minutes, or until the chicken is thoroughly cooked. Remove the bay leaf and parsley sprigs from the sauce. Spoon chicken mixture into a serving dish and garnish with fresh chopped parsley.
