I actually agree with that as well! I think that’s very plausible, especially given Deceit’s reaction to everything in the “Selfishness v. Selflessness” video.
When I first theorized that Virgil was a dark side, I mentioned the fact that the dark sides were only dark because Character!Thomas saw them as dark. Virgil was the main antagonist until Accepting Anxiety, after all. So I do agree with that.
Deceit is definitely a gatekeeper for the other sides (regardless of if he directly opposes anyone or not), and quite honestly according to my theory there may not be any moreDark Sides unless more “light sides” are going to be introduced. We’ll just have to see!
And on that note of Deceit’s power of the dark sides — did he allow Virgil to go out in all the videos, or since Thomas has heightened anxiety, did Virgil have the power to go out on his own?
Much to think about.
What are The Dark Sides, anyway?
I think I’ve cracked the code.
(I know I have this tagged as spoilers, but just in case, PLEASE don’t read this unless you’ve seen Thomas’s newest video, thanks!!!)
With the introduction of Deceit way back when, the main illustration of the “dark sides” was that they were opposites of one of the “light sides” that made up the main cast.
In thinking about the SSCU (Sanders Sides Cinematic Universe), I actually think that the Dark Sides aren’t opposites of the Main Sides, but in fact two sides of the same coin.
Dealing with Intrusive Thoughts essentially confirms this, all with the existence of our newly beloved trash boy Remus:
Tumblr media
He is “The Dark Side of Creativity.” He and Roman are twins, and his perversive thoughts and twisted humor are in stark contrast to Roman’s fleeting fantasies of unicorns and dragons. However, as stated in the video, he is still creativity, just a side of it that Thomas prefers not to think about.
Obviously Remus is Roman’s Dark Side, but what about Patton?
Tumblr media
Since Deceit pretended to be Patton in his debut video, we pretty much assumed that he was Patton’s Dark Side, especially considering how Deceit seems to be very amoral. He appears to only care about pushing Thomas forward regardless of rules or expectations, as revealed in Selfishness v. Selflessness. With that in mind, Deceit and Morality seem to be a good match.
However, I propose a different analysis, especially after watching Dealing with Intrusive Thoughts:
Deceit isn’t Patton’s Dark Side. He’s Logan’s.
Tumblr media
At first glance, Deceit is obviously “The Dark Side of Morality” given his amoral, selfish beliefs that serve to push Thomas ahead in the life. Deceit even backs his beliefs up with evidence, what with mentioning Plato’s views on honesty in Can Lying Be Good? Obviously Deceit is very knowledgeable, but…
He misconstrues his knowledge. He uses information to push his beliefs forward, instead of using the information to form his beliefs. THAT’S what makes it deceitful.
Using the Plato example, Deceit uses it as the basis for his argument instead of an exception to a moral principle like Patton does. In Selfishness v. Selflessness, Deceit uses Max Stirner’s view of society and the self to further his agenda, ignoring that Stirner himself was a racist, drunk anarchist. He takes what supports his views and goes on with it, taking things that seem to or even HAVE merit and twisting them for his gain.
Thus, Deceit is the “Dark Side of Knowledge.”
But if Deceit is Logan’s dark side… who is Patton’s?
Virgil.
Tumblr media
As revealed in Dealing with Instrusive Thoughts, Virgil confirmed a widely accepted fan theory: he used to be a dark side. Thus, with our definition of a Dark Side, he must share “a coin” with another side, which is Patton.
Both Patton and Virgil deal with emotions. While Patton definitely bears the bulk of it, Virgil has an important seat at the table when it comes to how Thomas perceives and feels about the world around him. Patton typically tries to look on the bright side and push away bad feelings (as shown in the Moving On two-parter), while pre-AA Virgil worked to twist every little thing into something bad. That’s what anxiety does after all, look at the negative side and only the negative side. In some ways, like in today’s video, Virgil still does this.
This makes Virgil “The Dark Side of Emotion.” Even though he actively works to help Thomas with the other three main sides, his anxious thoughts still get the best of him and work to hinder Thomas, as shown in the latest Sanders Sides.
So we have the pair of Remus/Roman, Deceit/Logan, and Virgil/Patton. Dark and light, yin and yang, two sides of the same coin.
What do you guys think? Start up a discussion in the notes or DM me! :D
Thanks for reading!
