Thinking about how aggravating it is that fandom boils down a lot of really fascinating Ace Attorney ships to "oh, so we're copying narumitsu's homework again, are we?" --as though the only reason that someone might find plausibly these ships (romantic and/or platonic) interesting is surface-level similarities to the fandom juggernaut pairing and not like the compelling characters and their established bonds in and of themselves.

I like narumitsu/wrightworth enough but you people need to accept that it’s not that deep compared to the rest of the series. Most of the cool things about it exist only in the fandom.

That said, to help you i have compiled a list of ships that are gayer/more canon than narumitsu/wrightworth, ranked by how gay/arguably canon they are:*

Asoryuu. Do not spoil the rest of tgaa2 for me, but i do know about some things that I haven’t gotten to yet. Anyways i think breaking the boat rules and risking your trip to Britain that you’ve been dreaming of forever in order to bring your childhood friend (for whom you were already about to risk the trip again in order to get him out of murder charges) with you is a bit gayer than starting work in a profession you’re good because you heard that guy you knew in elementary school is a prosecutor now.

Susahao. do not spoil the rest of tgaa2 for me. Anyways if you’ve played it you know what I’m talking about

Aurametis. If you try to tell me that “unnecessary feelings” is gayer or more canon than “her respect as a coworker isn’t all that I wanted” you should maybe see a doctor. This would be at the top of the list if I wasn’t also ranking for sheer gay energy

Shamseki. do not spoil the rest of tgaa2 for me. Anyways see my shamseki post, it’s gotten even gayer as I play through the case. Even if it’s not a true ship, they definitely fucked and soseki was topping

Klapollo. This is more vibes based with only a few lines that actually help it, but holy shit are those vibes there. Especially if you ship narumitsu, then it’s a narrative parallel

Gumwright. The entirety of t&t, maya is just constantly trying to get phoenix to date gumshoe and gumshoe isn’t denying it. My headcanon is that gumshoe told maya he liked phoenix and she’s trying to be his wingwoman

Gumworth. I have to concede that this is actually on the same level of gayness/canon as narumitsu if not slightly less but I’m putting it here because most people assume it’s far lower than that and that’s an injustice to poor gumshoe

A few things about the new narumitsu comic I'm working on!

As I said, it takes place after 3-5, specifically after dinner at Très Bien. They have a conversation and confess some things to themselves and each other. These are basically the points I'm going to address: - the earthquake at Hazakura & Miles's guilt over it - the conversation between Iris and Miles (namely the 'is it just possible that maybe... you yourself have a deep, dark secret in your heart?' <- I feel like this means more than just 'Miles doesn't present Phoenix's profile because he's jealous') - a nod to the hospital scene in the anime (where Miles says he just happened to be back in the country - he's such a bad liar I swear - but also consider: in the anime, Phoenix doesn't have the magatama. But if the same scene happens in the games.......) - the parallels between Godot and Phoenix (namely their obsession over saving people) - and general narumitsu things (namely they're both outrageously in love and bad at feelings)

So my Klaryan take is kinda a mega theory that takes a lot of mini theories into consideration so here it is. This will be long. This will be unhinged. This is my Pepe silvia

Tw for discussions of substance abuse and abusive relationships

1) AA4 parallel foils

Ok so this is semi common knowledge. Every character in AA4 is ment to be a direct foil to a character in aa1. This is well documented and also applies to a lot of the witnesses too. Apollo is a foil for Phoenix, Ema is a foil for Gumshoe, Trucy is a foil for Maya, Klavier is a foil for Edgeworth. This goes on for almost every charcater in the game.

But here's the thing. The trilogy already has foils already. So some of these charcaters end up being massive parallels to eachother. A non relevent example I think about daily is that Trucy and Franziska are very similar but where this is relevant is Klapollo and Narumitsu. I have a post explaining this I'm more detail but basically while far from identical there are a lot of perhaps unintentional but at minimum unexplored parallels between Phoenix and Klavier and Apollo and Edgeworth. This is important.

2) Krisnix as an allegory for substance abuse

So first of my opinion of this doesn't really influence my take on grape juice but it's pretty undeniable that even if you don't think Beanix has addiction issues, hes almost coded to. There's the comment about Ema and the white powder and then the extent to which he's always surrounded by grape juice which at minimum looks like wine. In universe it's easy to see this as a part of his mask and that is my in universe take, he's trying to look in a bad way to hide how he's actually doing.

But I think we can take this further. Miles and Kristoph are superficially very very similar characters however underneath are deeply different and as such have a very different effect on Phoenix's mental state. Miles is absent during the 7yg at his request. And there's a miles shaped hole left in his life that he wants to fill with something that is superficially the same but is in it's effects very different and very bad for him.

Anyone who has dealt with addiction will likely recognise that pattern.

3) Klavier is on some level (whether he's in denial about it or not) aware that Kristoph is in some way dangerous or abusive and was running from him with the band

This is mostly just my take on how he acts in sucession and another very good post that I'll have to find that talks about how similar him joining the band was to the things the other people involved with the Gramarye trial did to try and evade Kristoph.

4) Phoenixs biggest flaw and how Kristoph tests it

So I basically never shut up about this in some places but might not have talked about it here so the tldr of this is that Phoenixs biggest flaw is that he is constantly trying to see the best in people. The final test of this is not breaking the black psyche locks and accepting that just because he's a human being with complexity, doesn't mean his actions are excused or that Phoenix has to forgive or protect him.

So this is where we can start bringing it together a bit.

Klavier and Phoenix are both very similar characters and both victims of Kristophs abuse. Phoenix has a relationship that exemplifies his harmful behaviour after the trial, it's pretty interesting to explore the same thing happening to Klavier.

Especially when we start to compare Daryan to Kristoph and find that they're superficially very different even if both of them turned out to be murders. Kristoph is reserved, Daryan is brash. Kristoph is classy, Daryan is flashy. Kristoph is well spoken and poetic, Daryan is straightforward. You get the idea.

And isn't that fucking fascinating? That Klavier ran to someone who was the complete opposite of his brother but ended up being just as dangerous? And also is it not really interesting that as Phoenix has to learn to accept Kristoph's humanity doesn't excuse his actions. If we take Klavier running to Daryan in this way to be him refusing to acknowledge the human side of his brother, that but running to the superficial opposite and not recognising what truly did make Kristoph dangerous, he fell into the arms of a murder.

And of course, the person he then falls for, is someone who is Apollo. Who is genuinely a good person but was Kristophs mentor and is very similar to him in a number of superficial ways. He has to stop running from his trauma and confront it head on.

Basically this interpreation means the klaryan/ Klapollo and Narumitsu/Krisnix love triangles function as basically a microcosm for how these two handle their trauma and how they have to over come it and each is a direct mirror of the other.

My take on Daryan

Ok people might have seen me joke that he's straight. Here's the thing. I think he definitely has been sleeping with Klavier. They are in some kind of relationship. Buuuuut, I do not think the feelings he has about the relationship are ever well traditionally romantic or sexual. I think it's driven from his side primarily by envy and rage that Klavier gets the spotlight more than him. He can never upstage Klavier on stage, but he can posses him. He can make him feel like shit as revenge.

My General Klayran timeline

They start whatever their weird thing is during the 7yg.

After 4-1 Klavier spirals a lot and it puts intense strain on their relationship because Daryan does not care about this bitch and does not want to support him

4-2 Klavier meets Apollo, sees him in court and kinda starts to develop a big old crush. He realises that Daryan is making him miserable and breaks it off after the case

4-3 newly broken up and it's taking its toll. Then we'll 4-3 happens and that's the end of them.

i absolutely adore the way that relationships are written in this fic, maya's relationship with phoenix really shines through even through their brief interactions and later their texts.

i also really enjoy the way edgeworth is written in this fic, his initial caginess and awkwardness really feels true to the character and is done in a way that doesn't want to make me die of embarrassment, more in a way that makes me want to see him work past his issues and enjoy watching warrior of neo olde tokyo with maya ^_^

maya's written really well also, i appreciate the way she steps back when she realises she's gone too far with edgeworth (like when she grabs his arm and immediately realises her mistake and apologises) - far too often i've seen interpretations of maya where she takes things too far and makes people uncomfortable, when in the games it's really the opposite. (read: stopping phoenix from showing edgeworth a picture of his dad's dead body) i'm always a big fan of a good maya fic too :-)

all the steel samurai content here is also really cool as someone who enjoys seeing different writers' (strangely cohesive with each other's) interpretations of the show (and by extension, the steel samurai and the evil magistrate). huge fan of the 'magisteel is actually narumitsu' thing that a bunch of aa authors have going on and i especially love when they expand on it, i just love media inside other media, it's one of my favorite things :3

OUGHHHH THEY WOUND ME!!!! Intellectually attracted. Lana fumbled Mia soooo badly and honestly I ship them as an OT3 including Diego <333 Lana had to become corrupt to save her sister while Mia fought corruption and died because of it… Lana the chief being called by Mia’s killer and informed through that (which I get was a translation error BUT MY GOD THE IMPLICATIONS!!!)… Imagine Godot trying to contact Lana to discuss Mia after he wakes up or them meeting in prison after TT…. UGH. Lanamia.

KRISNIX:

I’m fuckding crazy. They are toxic. They match each other’s freak. They pretended to be friends but they knew they were lying to each other (but what if those feelings got too real? What if it wasn’t an act? but you can’t let your guard down, no, not now, not after everything you’ve worked for). THEY SPIED ON EACH OTHER. for seven years. Kristoph made Phoenix more corrupt but Phoenix made Kristoph more human but they damaged each other and spiraled into madness. Kristoph ruined Phoenix’s like and Phoenix returned the favor. They are the same polar of a magnet, the same in every sense but always five steps away from each other, never able to get too close.

WRIGHTWORTH/NARUMITSU:

What is there to say that hasn’t already been said? I went through the pipeline. I hated Edgeworth and then instantly understood why the pairing is so popular. Childhood friends, to strangers, to enemies, to friends, to enemies again (one sided), to friends, and then lovers. They have long periods where they don’t talk or see each other and yet their bond only gets stronger each time. I don’t believe in soulmates and I hate the concept but if soulmates did exist, Narumitsu has that going.

SOLKAT:

Homestuck is fucked for separating them but at least they were put back together RECENTLY. They are so DOOMED in the main webcomic. They are best fucking friends and the closest each other has (outside, maybe, Sollux and Aradia). “kk dont u2e the computer explo2iion code iit wiill explode your computer” “FUCK YOU” and then the computer exploded. Sollux is Karkat’s IT guy (romantic). I think they could easily vacillate flushed and pitch and pale and. Yeah they are soo multi quadranted (with flush as the main). Goddd I miss them. When Sollux left it BROKE me. Davekat could never have what they have.

VRISREZI:

EVERYBODY GIVE IT UP FOR TOXIC DOOMED YURI!!!! WOOOO!!! They find each other in every universe. They are perfectly pitched (but also a little flushed). They have a POWERFUL rivalry like nobody else and are always evenly matched, bouncing one step ahead of each other. They act like they hate (platonic) each other at times but it’s sooo clear how much they care about each other. They would do anything to stop the other (cuz they are pitched rivals) but they would do anything FOR each other too. They make my head hurt and I mean this positively.

ZOSAN:

The fandom has them so wrong they are NOT CUTE YAOI they are MEAN and they FIGHT and that is their love language. They are a great example of Homestuck pitched. Sanji cooks Zoro’s favorite food because he has it memorized and Zoro eggs him on and threatens him but he’s eating the food and so clearly enjoying it and they keep up their bickering which escalates to a fight but they are fully in sync every step. They are a POWERFUL duo in fighting and they cover each other’s weaknesses FLAWLESSLY. They CARE about each other and their “love to hate” was clearly shown early on through Dorry and Broggy’s parallel, which is the same arc where this dynamic started. I don’t want them canon because I do like the friend dynamic the crew canonically has, but they are WONDERFUL in fanon.

Klapollo:

Truth be told, I don't have a strong opinion about the ship, mostly because both Apollo and Klavier are characters I, well, never came to care about. Nor do I have other ships with the characters I feel strongly about to start actively avoid this ship (like with certain Meiji lawyers, but that's a talk for another time). So this is why this bingo might be seen pretty uninspiring, but my opinion on klapollo is somewhat neutrally-positive.

Narumitsu's legacy is really something terrific and legendary, partly because it gave birth to its parallels, references that are formed into the new lawyer-prosecutor dynamics as we see with Klavier and Apollo. And, I admit, there's this air of novelty and excitement with this new era duo.

AJ is my least favorite AA game, but the dialog on the basic level - all the banter, jokes, humor - is written impeccably funny,and this goes to the main rivalry in the game. I have a lot to say how it's not really meaningful in the end, given VERY questionable plot choices, so it's not like I have a lot to say about klapollo on a grander level, unlike narumitsu or asoryu, but it's not a specific problem with the pairing, more like AJ having a very weird and abrupt plot and character progressions, and second trilogy being essentially a potpourri of bafflingly different plots and whatnot, so canon klapollo loses itself a bit. But!! At least their interaction, banter and clash of their personalities work so well, it's so funny, and you can't help but think how it will all work out if they were partners

Also - pessimistic stuff aside, this whole thing leads to something really inspiring. Klapollo is one of the ships with potential unresolved in canon, but really blossoming into the fanworks. Honestly, of all Big Three Holy Gay Trio ships (narumitsu/asoryu/klapollo) klapollo shippers are ones I respect the most. They turn these possibilities into various inspired fics/artworks etc, and fanon klapollo is something I really can appreciate

Saw someone say that Klapollo is poor man's Narumitsu and I have A Lot Of Things to say about that. First off, Klapollo's dynamic is in no way comparable to Narumitsu, each ship has their own unique value and merit to them. You have these two guys who used to be childhood best friends until the other got adopted by his father's murder and had to leave for Germany and when Phoenix saw his face again, he learned that he had become a prosecutor, when he wanted to be a defense attorney like his father. His demeanor had also changed, gone was the Edgeworth who stood up for him in the class trial, he seemingly became a man who would do anything to win a case. And so Phoenix dropped everything he had planned for his life to become a defense attorney JUST SO HE CAN TALK TO THE MAN AGAIN. Now let me remind you that Edgeworth spended most of his life thinking that he had killed his father in that elevator, here comes Phoenix when Edgeworth got framed for murder. He reveals the truth to Edgeworth, that he hadn't killed his father, the real murderer was the one who had taught him everything he knew, who took him under his wing and acted as a guardian for him (a terrible one for sure though). He is able to take off this guilt that Edgeworth has been letting cosume him for all these years. He is able to deliver closure to Edgeworth's trauma.

It's also worth noting that Edgeworth has a customized chessboard that has the pieces look like him and Phoenix. Also we musn't forget "You've saddled me with... unnecessary feelings".

Now Klapollo? Sure they share some similarities to Narumitsu but the appeal is different. For you see, here is this lawyer who was a prodigy in school and he's also a world-renowned rockstar, here's this Guy who is a fan of Phoenix Wright and got into law as he was inspired by him. Klavier sees this average-looking man and goes "I've never felt this way with a man before~", Phoenix and Edgeworth would never be able to have done that, nah man everything these motherfuckers do together has to be dramatic as shit (sure you've got comedic moments here and there but these two are so angsty istg). The thing with Klapollo is that unlike Narumitsu, they are actually able to maintain a friendly relationship before the big climax of the games. Klavier is able to act professional (sorry Edgeworth but um... yeah) towards Apollo and doesn't go out of his way to antagonize him. You see, one of the main appeals for this ship is that Klavier twirls his hair and daydreams about this Some Guy who is the most Some Guy to ever live and probably takes pride in that (of course he has a shounen anime protagonist backstory but we'll get to that in a bit). And now we reach the part where we learn more about Apollo, and how you can draw parallels to Klavier's situation. Apollo just like Klavier has an estranged relationship with his brother, of course Apollo's brother had to be separated him due to Ga'ran's reign of terror and Nahyuta was forced to send defense attorneys to their deaths to keep his little sister safe, unlike Kristoph who did everything on purpose to achieve glory. Klapollo are not in any way comparable to Narumitsu, because Klapollo offers a healthy relationship with a solid foundation, a fun dynamic and some depth to it while Narumitsu is... I mean it's not unhealthy it's just that they're a fucking mess like they added way more extra steps in friends to enemies to lovers

First impression: wahh the silly....

Impression now: pls hasn't she suffered enough.... hasn't she lost enough... hasn't she been accused of enough murders....she is so silly and soo sad but also strong enough to still be silly after all this. I love her.

Favourite moment: that one moment in turnabout goodbyes when she spoke up against vk and gave phoenix a chance to save edgeworth....she had spent such a big part of that case feeling useless it felt very nice to see her be strong like this. Admittedly I haven't played aa3 yet nor have i spoiled myself everything about this game the way i had for the first two so i can't really speak about any potential maya moments here but i just know that there are some POWERFUL ones. Can't wait to see them play out.

Idea for a story: none </3 sowwy

Unpopular opinion: Ahhh welll. Admittedly i don't really see the appeal of franmaya....? Like sure the parallels are definitely there, ive seen them, i enjoy them and yet i just don't really care about it. But that's definitely a me "problem", i just can't possibly bring myself to care about more than one (1) romantic ship per franchise and narumitsu managed to hoard any and all potential interest for fictional romance i could possibly have.

Favourite relationship: Phoenix and maya seems like a pretty obvious answer but also....mia and maya.... because as per usual i cannot be normal about fictional sibling relationships.

Favourite headcanon: Food is just. A big comfort for her. Every time she is upset, or someone else is upset she strongly believes that hanging out and eating something will make things better. She probably can't cook to save her life tho. Also!!!! Her relationship with Mia was complex!!!! She was mad at her for leaving her behind just like their mother did but at the end of the day she just misses her so so so much. They really were all each other had at the beginning of the series and then Mia went and died......man....

Stick... His eyes flick down to his note cards. He swears he’d printed them in his best penmanship, atop one of the library's extra premium desks, but everything is spinning and he feels faintly like he's going to throw up. "Did you uh," he starts, letters swirling in his eyes. "Did...you fall out of heaven...?" Genius prosecutor-in-training Miles Edgeworth regards him with a blank stare. Phoenix thinks now would be an opportune time for him to locate the nearest possible bridge and promptly jump off of it. - The joys and woes (mostly woes) of being in love, as told by BratFeen.

misc commentary/musings under the cut :)

the way i wrote feenie inner monologue and narration parallels my informal writing style, so writing his freak outs weren't challenging. consciously changing sentence structures/verbiage to be more or less extra, on the other hand, totally was.

the bulk of my pain came from writing fluff in the first place, stumbling through dialogue exchanges (as always), and attempting larry dialogue...all of which i honestly think i failed at pretty badly HAHA. who cares tho? it's my work!

bratfeen is one of my favorite narumitsu "eras" if you will. i've always wanted to write them. i didn't know the opportunity would come so soon (and at my expense considering i still have a zine fic to finalize for a diff fandom), but i took the shot. the full fic was written over the course of a day which i do not recommend anyone experience. i was on a writing hiatus for months and wrote 8k words as soon as i came back. do you see why i burnt out in the first place?

the easiest part about writing bratfeen is that none of the things i write are exaggerated for the purpose of carrying the plot forward. feenie believing that bratworth is better of a human being than everyone makes him out to be? sounds about right. feenie insisting to others that miles is the best thing since grilled cheese? his raging savior complex says that's likely to occur. feenie fumbling the bag because he thinks miles is the prettiest thing he's ever seen? yeah, 20 y/o feenie would! feenie shoving the asshole who talked shit abt miles? we saw the exact same thing with doug swallow (and we all know how that ended...). all of it is in line w his character. also miles being a try hard. that's a given.

i am hoping i can showcase more of my technical skill aka the angst writer in me with my next work, though i've been closely following fictober (haven't been publishing because, again, zine fic obligations) and have plenty of angsty fics stored in my drafts. i hope you enjoy my poor attempt at humor and fluff. may i muster the strength to finish the rest of my zine fic...please...

I can see why it's really well liked (especially with the Beanix characterization), and honestly, if I found when I was older or something, I probably would be more into it

Character Parallels

I've been replaying the trilogy recently, and it made me think... there are so many parallels? Some may be unintentional perhaps, but still. But what fascinates me the most is that all the paralells have pretty blatant contrasts by the end - somehow emphasized by the 'ending' of it all. Gregory - Phoenix Both become parents at 26, but Gregory loses Miles when he's 9 and Phoenix gets Trucy when she's 8 - so the difference is that basically Phoenix resumes where Gregory left off. Trucy - Miles Both adopted by lawyers at around the same age - both lose their parents in a courthouse - both precocious children who excel in their chosen path at an extremely young age - both somewhat extravagant, Trucy with her magician getup and Miles with his formal way of dressing and fancy talk. The difference between them is obviously that Trucy was lucky enough to have a decent, loving parent while Miles was not. * the above stuff is also why I really want Miles to co-parent because it would just come full-circle and would be fodder for great character development for both him and Trucy but I digress Phoenix - Miles The contrasts between them are mostly about their attitude towards things and nothing too specific, so I'll focus on the similarities here. They're both manipulated by someone they trusted, both accused of murder because of that person's plot - both kinda try to rush to their deaths because of it (Phoenix eats a necklace(d) with poison, Miles confesses to a crime that would lead to a death penalty). The difference here is basically that Phoenix tends to prefer taking care of things himself - he likes to help, but hates to be helped. Probably didn't even let Miles be in the country during the whole thing, he probably only him help with the implementation of the jurist system from afar. Both try to hide their emotions and are secretive (but Phoenix is more successful, while Miles kinda sucks at it) - both accused of forging evidence (although Miles doesn't get disbarred because of it). Both try their darn hardest at helping people because they've helped each other and were inspired by the other's words and actions in the past and become the person they are today because of it. They're mentors, but they also learn from their mentees, and each other - okay this is turning into narumitsu real fast I'll stop Kristoph - Manfred Both manipulative, egotistical and prideful to the point where a minor blow to their ego makes them go murderous and vindicative - both dedicate their life to ruin the one that offended them. In Kristoph's case, it's both towards Phoenix and Zak, actually - Kristoph also murders a father (well, actually, he murders two fathers), like Manfred killed Gregory. Both also have a relative that needs to cope with what they did (Franziska and Klavier). The contrast here is mainly that while Manfred ultimatelly confesses fully, we never discover what Kristoph's black locks were truly about. Franziska - Manfred Both shot, but in different circumstances - Manfred takes a vacation in order to recover and make sure absolutely no one knows anything, but Franziska tries to go straight to court and wears her injury with something akin to pride (a bulletshot won't stop her, neither will what people think of her) Dahlia - Kristoph They both manipulate their sibling to do their bidding (although Klavier was unaware, unlike Iris) - both fans of poison - both destroyed by the person they despised the most - the difference here is that Kristoph did everything by himself (he manipulated Klavier, but he wasn't aware), while Dahlia conspirated with multiple people (Iris, Morgan, Valerie) There are probably others, but these are the ones that stuck out to me the most. Gosh I love Ace Attorney's writing.
