mordred pierced his ear bc he hoped that if he matched with atlas, he'd stay home longer - he did it by himself with a sewing needle, surprised by how much it hurt, and he cried when it bled and there was no one there to clean him up, so he did it himself; and when it got infected he hid in the library and researched it and figured that out by himself too.
by the time atlas next returned to the estate, tugging gently on the silver jewellery with a smile and a murmured "we match", mordred had almost forgotten that was why he'd done it.
#he doesn't have any other piercings just the one ear#when he's especially mad at or upset with atlas he'll take the jewellery out - he's never wearing it when he says goodye#he has no idea that atlas always wears a silver earring on that side - so they're always matching#lavore brothers#no bc it makes me so sad that atlas DOES love mordred - he loves him a lot#he'll tell strangers all about his brilliant little brother and order his favourite meals when he misses him#he wants to spend time with him whenever he's back in morielle and does his hardest to find time but its. difficult#bc mordred has his routines and he's not going to disrupt them just bc atlas is visiting#and like ive said he thinks mordred doesn't like him!!#there's such a big age gap they think they have nothing in common and atlas often feels like mordred thinks hes lame and annoying#and we all know how mordred feels ):

Arthurian Legends | Dark Platonic King Arthur Pandragon x Daughter Reader x Dark Platonic Various
You are the twin of Mordred, and the child of King Arthur and Morgan Le Fay.
As you grew up, your mother mother shielded you, by placing protection spells on you, and also teaching you about healing using magic.
and she filled Mordred's head with hate on Arthur, claiming that he stole her birthright.
Mordred grew up with hatred in his heart towards Arthur, while you refused to hold ill intentions towards your father.
But that didn't stop you and Mordred from being inseparable and bonding as twins.
Whenever you have a suitor, Mordred gets rid of them with the help of his mother.
Morgan pushed you and your twin to reveal that you are his children at the court.
Mordred is quick to object on you coming with him, believing it to be dangerous.
"Mother, keep (Y/n) with you until I take revenge, I don't wish for her to meet the man who abandoned us and stole your throne"
"You and your sister have a connection, separation will only cause destruction"
You, on the other hand, did not want to ruin Arthur's marriage with Guinevere, yet you didn't wish to make your mother sad.
So, you started your journey with your twin.
Mordred made the first appearance by saving the king on a hunting trip, making Arthur knight him therefore he joins the Round Table.
Then Mordred introduces you to the court before announcing that the both of you are the children of the King
Arthur wanted to deny it even if he knew it was true, but when he saw how embarrassed you felt, he confirms it instead.
Later that day, you approach him and Guinevere shyly, stuttering out words of apology.
"I apologise for my brother's behavior and causing disturbance"
Your apology made Arthur obsessed with the idea of protecting you from any harm.
While Guinevere fall in love with the idea of you being her step-daughter.
She didn't have any children of her own, so you being her daughter is a really exciting thought.
Arthur makes sure to spend time with you bringing you on hunting trips with him and the knights of the round table.
He made you a tiara decorated with all types of rare stone gems for you to wear at all times.
Arthur would notice the closeness you have with Mordred which makes him decide to intask his son with many responsibilities so, you could spend more time with him instead of your twin.
"Your brother is occupied with his new responsibilities, allow to accompany you instead"
Merlin would grant you any wish you want, being more soft with you unlike how he is with Arthur when he was your age.
The old wizard also tries to advice your father to not keep you and your twin apart as it would might cause havoc.
But Arthur chose to ignore the warning, letting platonic obsession with you win.
On the other hand, Guinevere would take you with her on walks in the early morning.
Insisting you call her mother while she picks out expensive fabrics for the new dresses she ordered to be made for you.
"I wish for you to call me mother and to consider as such from now on"
"But, I have a mother, my queen"
"She is not here now, is she? I'm the wife of your father, so I'm your legitimate mother"
Mordred realizing that you are drafting away from him, your twin decided to cause chaos.
He exposed Guinevere in front of the whole court for having an affair with Lancelot, only to have his father cast her aside and order her death.
You try to reason with Arthur to spare her but seeing your love for her only made the king insistent on excuting.
The whole affair scandal caused a civil war.
Arthur decided to leave the kingdom and you in the care of Mordred while he went into war against Lancelot.
You helped Guinevere escape before she could get executed.
While Mordred seized the opportunity to ursurp the throne and become a king, allowing Morgan into the castle so all of you three could live together.
But you weren't pleased, taking a horse, you go to inform Arthur about what has occurred in his absence, making decide to return to reclaim the throne.
Thinking that Arthur has kidnapped and held you captive, Mordred almost went insane about how you, his twin, the other part of him, isn't by his side.
So, he went with an army to the battle of Camlann against Arthur's army.
The father and son stabbed each other severely, so both could die.
The end.
Actually, no, that's not the end.
Remember when your mother taught you about healing?
Well, it came to use, as you healed both Mordred and Arthur.
You made them both agree on peace, with Mordred returning the throne to your father, while Arthur forgives Mordred and open a new page.
Arthur banished Morgan, so she doesn't influence you and your twin ever again.
You, Arthur, and Mordred live in peace as a happy family.
A/n: I decided to give it a happy ending because I feel like it would be nice for a change.

things that make me sad this week
golsum has -3 to charisma despite being a realtor because he's a flesh construct so he looks scary and people don't like him
no matter how nice he is all flesh constructs have a charisma score of 5
he's banished because of his charisma score and then the teens that did it laugh about how uncharismatic he is for a realtor
everyone encountered in the house is a monstrous race - ghost, vampire, frankenstein, werewolf - instead of just making monstrous versions of npcs they took the ones that already sort of fit and took away their personalities
fabian came to alone in adaine's room surrounded by her blood
brennan said not to touch the items and i think fig full-on ate some of that cottage cheese
cassandra was trying to send them home to mordred manor in elmville and messed up
kalina was around when cassandra got married meaning ankarna had shared custody and everyone knows lesbian exes that own a cat together are more committed to co-parenting than most actual parents
kristen heard a wolf howl somewhere in the house and she probably assumed it was tracker, remembering when she turned in the nightmare forest
baron knows that riz fears his friends finding out that he's aroace and they keep teasing him about dating baron so when baron says they're mistreating him he's actually kind of right
and riz tries his best to explain the situation while not giving too much away because if he doesn't then baron will explain the situation in his own words
fig doesn't live in the piano bubble anymore

Cryptic God!Merlin & Number1Worshipper!Mordred au - part 2
(Kinda an escalation of this post ) the Magic ban was lifted for a while now and they definitely has encountered a few weird sorcerers/Druids who is in Emrys cult.
So, when Arthur first meets calm and collected Mordred, a druid who asks to be knighted instead of licking Merlin he is very relieved like OH GOD YES FINALLY A NORMAL ONE
Arthur: I am so happy you are not one of those who starts hyperventilating and mentally screaming straight into Merlin’s head the moment you see him.
Mordred, offended: Why would I do that
Later, when Leon and Lancelot are giving him a tour:
Mordred: I understand why some people will get excited at the sight of Emrys, he is a god to us after all, but seriously, only immature fans get over excited like that; a real and veteran worshipper like me have a private hyperventilating session while praying to a personal Emrys shrine at night
Leon: You have a what in at what in what now
Lancelot: NOW, WE DONT HAVE TIME TO UNPACK ALL OF THAT
Merlin doesn’t like it when people treated him like a god and also not quite aware of the extent of his godly power himself, so, at first he avoids Mordred because even though Mordred appears calm, he can FEEL Mordred praying to him EVERY NIGHT.
Mordred: why do you fear me Emrys? I pray to you everyday. You are my idol.
Merlin: BECAUSE LAST NIGHT YOU PRAYED TO ME TO GIVE YOU STRENGTH BECAUSE GWAINE CALLED YOU A BABY AND MADE YOU REALLY SAD, AND TODAY I WOKE UP AND PUNCHED GWAINE SO HARD ON THE FACE BECAUSE HOLY SHIT YOUR PRAYER WAS SO STRONG???
Mordred: It works?
Merlin: IT WORKS. THAT’S WHY YOU NEED TO ST—
Mordred: does that mean if I pray hard enough, you will be able to shoot fire beams from your eyes like you do in those bedtime stories druid elders used to tell me?
Merlin: DRUID ELDERS USED TO TELL YOU WHAT!?!
Three days later, the knights encounter wild magical beasts in the forest during a patrol, as they are so sure they are kicking the bucket tonight, Merlin appears and shoots fire beams from his eyes, annihilating all the threats in 0.3 seconds. Mordred is overjoyed.
And at that point, Merlin has no choice but to adopt Mordred now because have you seen how the kid’s eyes lit up when he saw fire beams? This boy's puppy eyes will be his doom. If the kid asks him to shoot electric bolts out of his mouth, he will fucking do it. Merlin’s mom instinct kicks in yet again.
Arthur, while finally is relieved to see them getting along, soon realises that his hope to have Mordred as a Calm and Collected Magic user who will help his ex-manservant, current-Court Sorcerer, permanent-his idiot make less stupid decisions has flown out of the window, THE KID IS AN ENABLER.
Merlin: Imma punch that castle-size wyvern with my bare hands
Mordred: Yes. you can do it #king. This is going to be the best day of my life.
Arthur: NO YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO STOP HIM

HI i just finished reading the comic and it's so so incredible!!!! your art is gorgeous and your work with the story is completely unmatched <3
I've been listening to the song Butcher Vanity by Vane Lily a lot and it strikes me as a Deepdark song!
Thank you! I'm so glad you like the comic. I agree, Deepdark's desire to kill and eat and never stop consuming is what defines him. I'll use the chance to share a PMV by my pal Katti, the creator of The Exiled comic who made a really excellent PMV with the song :)
youtube
I think someone else had the same idea as well, it looks like it's already been suggested before :) but yes it does fit very well! Any song about a land/town/etc that's been cursed and rotten forever works great.
Tell me now of the very soul that look alike, look alike Do you know the stranglehold covering their eyes? If I call on every soul in the land, on the moon Tell me if I'll ever know a blessing in disguise
The curse ruled from the underground, down by the shore And their hope grew with a hunger to live unlike before
youtube
I never knew this song was from the Justice League movie?? Wow, that's wild. It is a good song for PATFW as a whole.
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed Everybody knows the war is over Everybody knows the good guys lost Everybody knows the fight was fixed The poor stay poor, the rich get rich That's how it goes Everybody knows
youtube
I have! In fact, the song "Hellfire" is the character theme song for Cootstorm. I made a drawing of it awhile ago.
youtube
Did you know that in fact someone made an animated video with Rainhaze to this very song? It's really cool, you should check it out!
youtube
Yeah, it's pretty Rainhaze! Especially in his post-Asphodelpaw murder manic phase.
If you knew what I knew, if you saw what I see You’d look through illusions, hallucinations, and lucid dream And I know that meaning can be such a pretty thing to keep But I got facts and I’m not afraid to use ‘em, take the good with the bad, take off the back you make a new front Some days I'm glad that I am a madman and I’d rather be that than An amicable animal, mild-mannered cannibal
youtube
Aww wait :(
Looks like the cat did a number on you Vienna, oh He took a brick off the side of the stoop Poor vienna It'll be over soon Your mamas waiting for ya But you're not coming home
Your mamas been so worried Cause you never came home Beneath the ground you're buried In memoriam
youtube
Yes I think it could be! Even more, I think it's exemplary of Deepdark's general charisma and desire to recruit people into Defiance, reminiscent of his speech from Issue 28.
You and me should go outside And beat 'em, beat 'em, beat 'em, beat 'em, beat 'em All pathetic flag waving ignorant geeks And we'll eat 'em, eat 'em, eat 'em, eat 'em, eat 'em
Come join the cause, come join the cause Who wants to come with me and come join the cause? Hide in the sky, hide in the sky Who wants to come with me and hide in the sky?
youtube
Oh, my mom loves this album, I grew up listening to it. This does remind me a bit of them, how sweet and sad.
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes Let them know you realize that life goes fast It's hard to make the good things last You realize the sun doesn't go down It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
Do you realize That you have the most beautiful face? Do you realize?
youtube
What a unique take on their relationship! I do like the theme of Ranger guiding Rainhaze's hand, and the parent-child energy is very interesting for them. Interesting take on Mordred, for that matter.
Guileless Son, I'll shape your belief And you'll always know that your father's a thief And you won't understand the cause of your grief But you'll always follow the voices beneath
Loyalty Loyalty Loyalty Loyalty Loyalty Loyalty Loyalty only to me

If Mordred and Freya grew up in the same Druid camp.
There was a moment of weakness. The two were in the tavern. Merlin was telling Mordred about the Druid girl he had once saved and protected. . . Well, he tried to, anyway. Her life slipped through his fingers and he blamed himself. It wasn't usual for Merlin to chug back the alcohol like this and certainly not to be so vulnerable around people, especially not around Mordred. But Mordred was the only one who could know, being a Druid and a magic user, and on nights like these, the feelings he had pressed down came spilling out of his heart.
While Merlin sobbed incoherently over this girl, Mordred tried to put the pieces together. Merlin told him that this was a Druid girl, who was captured, because she was dangerous. But she wasn't dangerous at all, she was kind and loving and compassionate, and lonely. Though Mordred had a hard time deciphering the words between Merlin's hiccups, he did know one person that could match this description.
"Was her name Freya, by any chance?"
The look on Merlin's face at the mention of her name. . . His eyes widened, his jaw dropped, and he teared up. "How do you know that?"
Mordred smiled, but only in sadness. "She lived in the same camp as I. Her parents were kind people and took care of all the children. Freya was as kind as her parents and took care of all those who were younger than her. She sang melodies that I can no longer remember the sound of, only that she sang them with passion and love. I've always seen her as an older sister. The day her parents passed away, we were all grieving. Us children the most."
Merlin looked at him. "Why did you cast her away?" he asked. "It wasn't her fault."
The young knight frowned. "I was just a child," he said. "The other children and I wanted her to stay, no matter what form she took. But the adults thought it was best for her to leave and never return. He said we were all in danger if she was around."
There was a brief pause. "I asked Freya what happened. A man attacked her while she was gathering herbs in the woods, so she defended herself. His mother found her and cursed her. It was horrible to hear. None of this was her fault."
He shifted in his seat. "Freya's magic is strong, but her heart is delicate. She wouldn't want to use her powers when every night she is forced to. . ." Mordred shook his head and stopped there. "I was afraid I might never see or hear from her again. But thanks to you, I know that she passed in peace."
"In peace?" Merlin wiped away his tears.
"In peace," Mordred repeated. "You've shown her compassion. You've shown her what love is. I'm happy she could feel loved in her last moments."
"You know Freya, you say?" Merlin asked, slurring his words. "How can I believe you? What if you're just making things up?" He was bitter, but how could he not, after all that had happened to him? "What was her favourite fruit? Do you know that?!"
Mordred scratched the back of his head. "I'm not lying to you about this," he said, "but I don't remember her favourite fruit. . . She always picked strawberries for us when we were little. But she also gave me apples, because I particularly liked those. I don't know. Maybe she just liked red fruit."
It was then and there that Merlin passed out, dropping his cup in the process. The tavernsmaid scolded Mordred for it, so Mordred quickly got off his seat and tried to carry Merlin out of the tavern, back to his room. He wasn't as heavy as Gwaine, thankfully, so carrying him was a lot less terrible. When he arrived, Gaius was sitting at the table.
"What is this?" he asked, surprised that Merlin would let himself be carried by Mordred out of all people. Gaius walked to them and helped Mordred put Merlin back in his room.
"I think he should rest," Mordred said. "Not only does the prophecy weigh heavy on his shoulders. . . He carries a heavy heart with him, too."
He gave Gaius a smile and walked towards the door. Right before he walked out, he stopped and turned to Gaius.
"I wish nothing for love to flourish the world," he said. "I wish for Emrys to feel the same kind of peace I feel when I am around him. I hope that one day, he can feel safe, and he can rest."

Random predictions for tonight's finale, just to have them on the record!:
We don't get any kind of explanation for why Jace is following Porter.
None of the current Ratgrinders survive. The party tries not to kill Mary Ann but she goes into the lava attempting to murder Fig.
On the flip side, Lucy gets established as being raised in the epilogue, as does Yolanda.
Riz's spell he's holding onto is Hold Person; I'm not sure that Kipperlilly bites on it, though - tactically it makes SO MUCH more sense for her to try to kill Kristen, but she DOES have that specific hate on for Riz.
We do get an end of season cliffhanger into a theoretically Senior Year, involving something with Bobby Dawn.
To my dismay, we don't find out Ayda's reaction to her library being overrun with cats (who are freely going through the portal in between Mordred and the Compass Points because of course they are), forcing me to write at least three fanfics on the topic.
Gorgug dies but gets revived.
Fabian has a TERRIBLE time in the epilogue, with something getting established about Chungledown Bim AND Gilear and Hallariel announcing that she's pregnant with Octuplets.
Fig and Ayda kiss.
Kristen and Cassandra fully reconcile, but Cassandra keeps more elements of the Nightmare King than they had at the start of this year.
Bucky does NOT convert to Cassandra.
Seacaster Manor has to open the pool to all students since it is now located on school grounds. (The pool was part of the manor that went into the sky - you can see it on the side of the ship mini.)
Porter dies and ends up stuck in an ironic hell, a plane of pure peace and passiveness.
I have a wave of sadness at the season being over approximately three seconds after the last playing of Teenage Rebellion starts.

i think part of the reason the ending of high noon over camelot is hitting me so much harder than once upon a time (in space) or ulysses dies at dawn did is that they had a chance
we go on and on about “it was always going to end like this” and “they’ve been dead since the beginning”, and those are very good but like. knowing that it didn’t have to go like that—that’s a little worse sometimes
ouat(is) is a story about a war, a rebellion specifically, and those tend to end with everyone dead. it’s pretty clear from the beginning that all or most of the characters won’t survive. there has never been a war that wasn’t a tragedy
udad, well, it’s in the title. and while it wasn’t impossible for ulysses to survive that, the story was a softer kind of sadness anyway, in that dying in the vault, where his brain couldn’t be taken for the acheron, was really one of the better ways things could have gone
but hnoc. they could have lived. they weren’t doomed. they had a chance. they didn’t even only make bad choices, they did so many things right! camelot and the saxons could have reconciled and were very close to doing so. but then the scorpion, and gawain, and it all went to shit. the pendragons could have used the grail to fly the station to safety, and everyone could have lived, and they were very close to doing so. like love won! it won! they all loved each other enough to not kill each other over the grail, they had it figured out! but then camlann, and mordred, and it all went to shit.
i just—they were so so close to fixing everything, or at least fixing a lot. and then they failed anyway. and i went into this knowing they would because, well, these are tragedies, it’s to be expected, but tragedies are so much sadder when they didn’t have to be tragedies
#so anyway that’s why i’m sobbing on my couch listening to once and future king on repeat#the mechanisms#high noon over camelot#hnoc

nonbinary fig and transfem bigender gorgug are things that can be so real. what other gender hcs would you like to speak of?
Long hc post so this will be in bullet point form!!
(minor fhjy spoilers!!)
Enby Fig and bigender Gorgug 10/10 no notes
Ayda researches nonbinary people so hard once Fig comes out to her and sends Fig so many articles
Fig reads them all and takes notes <3
Transfem Adaine is so tragic with Aelwyn and her parents and adgeasresd
Aelwyn paid for Adaines estrogen using their parents money but never told her
Adaine knits all of the bad kids their pride flag
Pangender Cass. That’s it that’s the headcanon
Riz Gukgak transmasc detective
His mom would absolutely buy his T if he asked but knows how expensive it so he refuses
He uses a lot of home remedies (a lot of *checks google* legumes in the Gukgak household)
The second Riz comes out to Fabian he insists on paying for Riz’s T
Does NOT wear his binder correctly
Called Fabian in literal tears when he noticed he was starting to look like his dad
Ok enough sad hc’s. For now.
TRANS JAWBONE TRANS JAWBONE TRANS JAWBONE
T R A N S R A G H T R A N S R A G H
Mary Ann starts calling Gorgug her partner and Adaine immediately starts working on a spell to make a cowboy hat appear on Gorgugs head every time she says it
Bigender. Bisexual. Biclass. 🎵Bye bye by-
I think it’d be a little bit funny if Kristen was the only cis one but she/they demi girl Kristen is just too strong
For pride month Kristen convinces Adaine Fig and Ragh to get up at 12:01 am June 1st to spray paint Mordred Manor the trans flag
They also. Set fire to Bobby Dawns car
Fig makes it their mission to look as androgynous as possible but not in a ‘no gender’
In a ‘double d tits and a 5 inch bulge’ type way
They appear at the end of Garthy O’Briens bed one night to ask for tips like the cryptid they are
Kristen comes out in virtually the same way she did the first time just way more drunk
They whisper it to Adaine and Adaine is just like “Kristen last week you googled ‘how to tell if demigirl’ directly in front of me and then told me what you were googling when I asked”
Kristen’s just like oh. Then they throw up
For transfem Fabian Mazey (also transfem because her) figures out she’s trans before Fabian does but doesn’t try to like push her out of the closet because she knows that won’t help
She does however try to like nudge her in that direction by like sending her transfem memes and getting her to try on Mazeys dresses (read a fic where Fabian tried on Mazeys dress and I loved it so much) and stuff like that
Transmasc Fabian comes out to Riz when Riz comes out to him
Kristin assigns themself binder boy (Ragh Fabian and Riz) duty
Also known as showing up in each boys room 8 hours after she finds out they had a binder on and beating them with a pillow until they take it off
Usually Riz
Kristen shows up in his doorway he’s immediately sprinting out the fire escape as fast as he can
Jawbone has top surgery scars on his untransformed body but you can’t see them on his usual half and half body (they are still there)
Fig keeps casting dream to show up in Bobby Dawns dreams with a nonbinary flag

could you please tell me more about lot because everywhere I see him he's portrayed as an awful abusive husband and even worse dad and I had never heard of a positive/good Lot?
Hey there!
I’ve actually made a list of positive Lot portrayals before, but that’s retelling focused. @gawrkin has made multiple posts about early medlit King Lot which shows he survives Gawain and this is an explanation for why later medieval narratives fail to account for who the heck is ruling in Orkney after Lot and Morgause bite the dust. Gawain is necessary for the end of the story and yet there’s a gaping monarch shaped plot hole after the story of Pellinore killing Lot and Gaheris killing Morgause comes into play.
Anyway like I’ve said before I’m not going to go on record saying Lot is a great dad or husband or anything that’s just not a metric to measure medieval men by lol but I still think he’s done pretty dirty in retellings a lot of the time. It’s never indicated in medlit that he hit or raped his wife. He scolds Agravaine for implying rape. (He has Gawain beat the shit out of him, so as I said, not a good parent, but if we’re examining everything in isolation, it’s something). Whether Lot’s reasoning for condemning rape is because he believes a woman’s bodily autonomy shouldn’t be violated (doubtful) or because it’s a matter of principle is neither here nor there if the result means he teaches his sons not to do it. I know that’s a low bar to clear, but when he’s up against the likes of Uther and Pellinore, it stands out to me. And like I mentioned in the last post, in the early Vulgate, The Story of Merlin, Lot was very distraught to be separated from Morgause and baby Mordred, and immediately began plotting an elaborate scheme to take Guinevere from Arthur in order to have some leverage to get Morgause back.
One could argue this is just a matter of honor, and it’s definitely is a component of it. It could also be said that Lot’s perspective ignores the will of his wife and children, who pledge loyalty to Arthur (Mordred’s babyhood notwithstanding). But the text specifically states Lot was sad about losing Morgause and “his little son” Mordred and that he desires their love which he cannot have while they’re in Logres with Gawainet and Arthur. That hits differently than if he was plain angry. There’s definitely an element of treating the women like property, take King Arthur’s wife to trade for his own wife, an exchange of tokens. But he misses her! Can a man abuse a woman he loves? Of course. But I just think Lot has been written so extremely evil in retellings that it’s gone overboard. Like he doesn’t have to be woobifyed but come on. He can be a little more normal than whatever Lavinia Collins was doing with him.
Anyway that’s my opinion in the matter. I think in the same way T. H. White’s portrayal of Morgause has colored all that came after it, Lot has also been unjustly maligned. He’s not as innocent as Morgause, but how does Pellinore get to be a quirky funny guy in Camelot (1967) and other stuff but Lot is a brutish abusive guy in 98% of everything? Make it make sense.

Merlin rewatch -- S2E11: The Witch's Quickening
Merlin stared at Morgana very suspiciously throughout the episode. I loved how intimidating he looked with a sweet smile when he caught Morgana sneaking into Arthur’s chamber. ‘He trains every day. The same time, same place.' He looked like he saw through Morgana’s pretence but then WHY DIDN’T HE CHECK THE KEYS!? I’m so mad.
~~~
Merlin was quite quick to tell Arthur the intruder’s whereabouts when he only heard Mordred’s voice who was historically very friendly to Morgana and for all he knew could be with the druids. Maybe he was worried that Morgana would escape again and cause big trouble, or that he already heard about the dead guards but I think a part of him viewed magic people in Camelot as threats in default now. Or perhaps after he witnessed the power play Mordred pulled last time, the prophecy became more and more real in his head as time went on.
--which made him actively try to make Mordred get captured later. I really hope Mordred would remember it like he said… sad. It would be so interesting. It’s quite a big shift in Merlin’s character. Mordred was conspiring with criminals, yes, but Merlin also thought Mordred was being used. He did this purely to prevent the prophecy. While Morgana was heading over the dark path, Merlin seemed not so far off. The youth and hope in s1 Merlin was slowly fading in s2 while he was plagued by prophecies. Poor child.
It's one of the few times I actually appreciated Gaius’ presence. Merlin had a place to show his fear, and Gaius actually gave wise advice, saying that the future wasn’t set in stone. His voice was so kind and warm.
~~~
I love the way Merlin handled the dragon though. “ (I will set you free) when I know Camelot is safe.” “because you don’t have a choice (but to trust me)” He was more and more authoritative. Although I’d prefer him not to go down in the first place. It doesn’t matter if he knew how the crystal works or not he already knew it’s dangerous and must be retrieved.

Fantasy High Characters and the song I think they'd listen to the most off the new Taylor Swift album
Kristen: okay early Trackerbees Kristen would listen to But Daddy I Love Him SO much and probably post lyrics on instagram. Judgemental small town with religious overtones opposed to a relationship? Just like her fr. Post-breakup Kristen blasts So Long London SO LOUD that the rest of Mordred Manor starts to have weird pavlovian responses to any song with the same chords.
Sandra Lynn: Sandra Lynn would not make it past Fortnight on the album I fear she would hear one song about an affair and turn off her phone. Sorry Sandra Lynn I love you queen but she would not have a good emotional time with this ablum
Jawbone: Jawbone WOULD love Fortnight but he doesn't pay attention to anything but the chorus and sort of assumes it's about the game. Occupational hazard of working with youths.
Riz: I truly beleive Riz was a Dateline kid and he'd like a cool song about going to Florida because you murdered someone. It's got burying bodies in swamps and stuff! Florence + The Machine is there! Great song for murder-obsessed teens.
Fig: I Can Do It With a Broken Heart because, she claims, "it's got a great beat!" (she misses Ayda)
Sklonda: Just pick whatever song you think people would listen to during sex and put it here. We know next to nothing about Sklonda/Gorthalax but I assume the sex is good so fill in the blank.
Kipperlilly: Kipperlilly was actually listening to Who's Afraid of Little Old Me on airpods when she stabbed Buddy Dawn and Brennan just didn't mention it. She's like 'oh an angry song for a short person that people don't want at parties? that's me.' Yes good question she WOULD sing the asylum lyric without any irony
Rueben: Rueben HATES Taylor Swift he DETESTS her no one can bring her up around him or he will go on a RANT but catch him crying to loml and thinking about Wanda Childa
Tracker: Nara walks on in her listening to How Did It End? and is like "oh why are you crying???" and Tracker has to lie REAL FAST and say she's thinking about Gallicea (sorry Nara)
Gorgug: All of the Bad Kids band together to keep him from hearing a single song off this album so that he doesn't think about Zelda and start crying.
Aelwyn: imgonnagetyouback because she loves to sing about violence
Adaine: Adaine listens to the first eight seconds of The Prophecy over and over against her will because Aelwyn keeps sending it to her under various guises being like "did this happen? did you see this? is this what the old elven people want?" it's like Elven Oracle rickrolling. To be clear - Adaine hates this song.
Fabian: I think Fabian would hear ONE sad song, think about the immense loneliness he feels every day, and throw his special edition vinyl out the window like a frisbee.
Gilear: Gilear accidentally downloaded an Enya album
Arthur Aguefort: this one is hard to explain but I think Aguefort would choose Clara Bow as a karaoke song despite it being one of the worst potential karaoke songs on the album. This is deliberate on his part. Also I think he'd be a real Stevie Nicks girlie.
Feel free to comment/argue/tell me your thoughts!

what if i said "but I would die for you in secret" but imagine merlin and arthur.
peace lyric analysis as merthur:
"Our coming-of-age has come and gone
Suddenly the summer, it's clear
I never had the courage of my convictions
As long as danger is near
And it's just around the corner, darling
'Cause it lives in me
No, I could never give you peace"
OUR COMING-OF-AGE?? okay, listen. as we know, arthur's coming-of-age moment is linked to his coronation. He literally has an episode called "The Coming of Arthur" parts one and two (S03 E12-E13). it's arthur becoming king and merlin starting to finally feel like he's getting somewhere with their destiny because of arthur's crowning. this is our setting. we're now in the after.
"I never had the courage of my convictions as long as danger is near" SHUT UPPPP SHUT UPPPP like actually oh my god. as long as danger is near is so so sick and speaks so loud. merlin absolutely does have the courage of his convictions and just to clarify, collins dictionary [colin morgan ;) ] states it as the confidence to do what you believe is right, even though other people may not agree or approve. BUT when arthur is in danger he does not do the "right" thing. he listens to the giant lizard instead or gaius (still love him) and does anything, anything, to make sure arthur doesn't get harmed no matter what.
rip morgana and getting poisoned.
rip mordred's entire existence.
although arthur attracts danger, merlin attracts just as much. and merlin is magic. (ugh, I'm getting sad and the only reason i won't cry is cause i'm in the middle of a lecture. a nighttime lecture). merlin can never give arthur peace because he is everything arthur was conditioned to hate. arthur can never give merlin peace because he's a king with expectations from Camelot and neighboring kingdoms. aka they can never be peacefully together without the threat of danger from them both and towards their relationship.
"But I'm a fire, and I'll keep your brittle heart warm
If your cascade ocean wave blues comes
All these people think love's for show
But I would die for you in secret
The devil's in the details, but you got a friend in me
Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?"
merlin lights arthur fires. that's it. that's the tweet.
merlin is also arthur's closest friend and confidant. he definitely gets arthur to see other perspectives on a situation and makes sure he remains compassionate and fair. for example, that look arthur gave merlin in S05 E11 during kara's trial?? my god. or the episode where arthur killed that one king's son under the influence of his uncle, the sleaze.
THEY WOULD DIE FOR EACH OTHER IN SECRET. NO ARGUMENTS. they've proved episode after episode again that they would no questions asked. people who don't know them just go "he's just a servant" or "you would choose him over your kind?" (ouch) not knowing the depth of their relationship. but yes. yes they would. and they would not have a single regret. they would deny the hell out of it but the proof is in their actions.
but you got a friend in me yes ma'am they do.
and it would be enough. it would. do they need a reminder that they were both born in mind of each other? that it was written since the beginning of time? that both of them have their own personal demons that instead of running away they'd take care of each other instead? that they're the most important person for each other and nothing can split them apart because they've grown to trust each other so much that their souls have intertwined? two sides of the same coin? other half of my soul, as the poets say???
"Your integrity makes me seem small
You paint dreamscapes on the wall
I talk shit with my friends
It's like I'm wasting your honor"
from arthur's pov he knows merlin is better than him. the way he interacts with people, his morals and values, his humbleness, just everything really. he pretends to be mad and upset about it but there's such deep admiration in it that he's actually self-aware.
dreamscape (google) definition: a landscape or scene with the strangeness or mystery characteristic of dreams
arthur finds merlin so strange!! so strange and mysterious.
the walls: i read this one fanfic on ao3 called "The Tragedy of Godhood" by Lilmia_Casand (read it!! it's so good. short, but beautiful) and the summary states:
"Merlin had gotten better at controlling his magic over the years, but it still spilled over, as if he were the source instead of someone calling upon it. It seeped into the castle walls, into the stone floors..."
This was the first thing I thought of (this quote stuck with me, it got bookmarked) and i couldn't have said it better. here's a play by play: arthur lives in a castle. the castle has walls. a lot of walls. he sees these walls everyday. the walls are familiar. the walls stay. the walls are forever. he can't imagine the castle without his walls.
walls = life/the future
magic is part of merlin's mystery because he's essentially hiding HIMSELF.
(does this make sense? no, prob not but bear with me)
there's an air about merlin where when you think about him, you realize you actually don't know much about him. he's a mystery. you know his jokes, you know where he's gonna be at whatever time of day (not the tavern, contrary to what arthur thinks), you know his favourite food. you don't know about his parents, you don't know why he saved arthur at his first feast, you don't know why he stays around.
arthur reflects on this and realizes it one day when merlin starts to become unavoidable in his mind. then he thinks, 'i really know nothing about this boy.' over time, merlin stays by his side, always, and arthur is so dependent on him that he starts worrying if he'll ever leave and if not him, camelot (he has abandonment issues 100%).
also see: S01 E10
hence, "you paint dreamscapes on the wall" is arthur saying, "you're the biggest mystery i've ever met and you make me wonder what every day will be like with you. will you be here tomorrow? and the day after that? until I'm married and have children who will favour you over me? will you be here to see them? to see me? i can't see it through the haze. i can't see you through the haze."
moving on—fuck that was so much longer than it needed to be—arthur and merlin talk shit about each other ALL THE TIME it's hilarious. and they know the one "bad" thing they talk about doesn't define their entire character because they hold each other in such high regard but... well...
(they definitely have regrets after)
"And you know that I'd swing with you for the fences
Sit with you in the trenches
Give you my wild, give you a child
Give you the silence that only comes when two people understand each other
Family that I chose, now that I see your brother as my brother
Is it enough?"
they both go all out for each other but with a focus on merlin, he goes ALL. OUT. it's war with him. nothing is half-assed. he fights, and fights, and never takes it less than seriously. but he also is there at arthurs lowest moments. when they're losing and when arthur is feeling too much or has too much on his shoulders. he's there. through it all.
merlin will give arthur anything he asks. he's already given him the purpose of his life and has hidden his magic until arthur's dying day because he thought that's what arthur needed and thought he would never accept him as he is so he gave it up.
but he's also given arthur the best thing he has. a friend. understanding. communication without words. souls recognizing souls, so much that the silence may be quiet but words are being exchanged through that same silence.
also, speechless eye conversations that range near the line of sexual tens—
then in the last line, merlin is saying: your people are my people. your burdens are my burdens.
"But there's robbers to the east, clowns to the west
I'd give you my sunshine, give you my best
But the rain is always gonna come if you're standing with me"
this goes both ways!! the only difference is that arthur's is visible and merlin's is hidden. explanation: arthur no doubt has enemies, it's not a secret. being a king and a target from the magic community, that man is almost getting killed everyday. it is not a peaceful life. he knows that. but nonetheless, he has shown merlin his best before—merlin is literally the reason he reaches the best person he can be, like the growth omg—so he knows he can give it but he knows there's a lot of baggage (external and internal) that comes with being with him.
as for merlin, his enemies are a secret. and they're dangerous. arthur faces some of those same enemies but from the product of what they've created, not them personally. no, merlin goes head-to-head with the people who curse/try to kill arthur. and he gives arthur a version of his best (he still has to keep many many secrets) but even if it's limited it's still genuine. although his secrets, his late nights, and his pure exhaustion are a part of him as well. and you can't have sunshine without rain.
okay ,WOW, i'm wrung out. it feels incomplete so i might add additional things later on but for now, enjoy.
once again, thank you if you read this, thank you bbc merlin, and thank you taylor swift.
(notice how i didn't use the word love once)

Is it really accurate to use the word "selfless" to describe Merlin?
"Selfless" is a word with an undeniable good "white" connotation and when it comes to Merlin, I don't think we can say something is black or white in its entirety. So this question is kind of tricky and, honestly, far too complicated to answer it with a simple and short yes or no.
Let me elaborate.
He was not selfish when it came to himself as a person —that part is right— as he never hesitated in giving his life for others, always helped his friends no matter what, never seeked power nor recognition for himself, etc.
But I do think he was selfish, extremely so at times, when it came to his own self-interests. The main one being Arthur's safety and wellbeing.
And why do I say this? Let's go back to memory lane and remember some of his decisions throughout the show!
1. He condemned (heartbrokenly, I'll give him that) his whole kin to continue living in the shadows and most probably to be executed if they were caught practicing magic in Camelot just so Mordred could die and Arthur could live by extension.
2. Talking about Mordred, he never gave him the chance to prove himself trustworthy and loyal to Arthur, he just decided he was evil since he saw he was destined to kill his friend instead of trying to change that outcome or understand where would that could come from.
3. He lied to Arthur about himself and what he was for the whole decade they knew each other so Arthur wouldn't feel bad for choosing him over his father when he found out about his magic. Or viceversa.
4. He always put Arthur's life before any other's, including his closest friends: remember when he repeatedly tried to talk Arthur out of going to save them from Morgana because he was worried about him as the druid seer showed him he was going to be killed by a man aka Mordred?
5. He lied to Arthur about his mother and what Uther did to conceive him (he also robbed him that unique and beautiful moment he shared with his mom), something he had all the right to know, so Arthur wouldn't kill Uther and hate himself for it for the rest of his life.
6. He took Arthur's free will away from him so he would agree to everything Merlin said and he could take him out of the castle and save his life when Morgana and Agravaine attacked.
And I could go on, honestly, but I won't because I fear some people might take this as a hating post towards Merlin, which it definitely is not lol. Quite the contrary, actually! I understand and, to a certain point even love, all the decisions Merlin took because it just proved the inmensity of his love for Arthur.
So if I mention all this is because, despite having honorable goals —as saving someone's life (Arthur's) or sparing them the possibility of feeling irrevocably guilty for taking a life-altering decision when their heads were clouded by anger, sadness and fear— the means he used to do all that were highly questionable to say the least: lies, deceiving, manipulation, mind-control and so on are, in no way, justifiable.
They are just not.
But we fans decide to brush those aside and accept them because we understand that it all came out from a place of love. Pure, huge, raw and unwavering love. Although, that still doesn't make it right. Not really.
I will dare to say it actually makes it worse.
Love is a complicated and, may I say, dangerous feeling. It can make us feel happier, confident with oursleves, adventurous and giddy. But it can also make us stupid, blind and selfish.
And that's exactly what it did to Merlin.
He came to a point where he stopped caring about his destiny and focused only on saving Arthur's life, others be damned, just because he loved him too much and he couldn't bare to lose him.
And unfortunately at the end, it was that love, and the King's complete and blind trust in Merlin, that got Arthur dead.
To sum it up, I don't think there's a better way to describe Merlin than to say he was a whole spectrum of greys. A constant paradox of selflessness and selfishness. Another victim of love.
Anyway, he was far from perfect but that's exactly why I love him! He could come as the most selfless person at first glance (and to a certain degree, he was; although I think the word sacrificial suits him even better) but if you really look at it, specially from a canon era outsider POV, he could rather come as a selfish, powerful man that wouldn't hesitate in destroying you if it means he can save Arthur's life with that.
He was truly unhinged when it came to his other half and that's exactly why he's my second most favorite fictional character ever created!
**The first one being Dean Winchester, another unhinged man that couldn't live without his baby brother and would burn the whole world willingly only to keep Sammy safe!
Huh.
Now that I think about it.
Maybe I have a type?
