has your life changed much since publishing A Marvellous Light?
the deadlines for books 2 and 3, which had seemed like ludicrous far-off nevertimes, are suddenly VERY REAL
occasional bouts of paralysing anxiety about what I put on twitter, alternating with guilt that I barely use instagram and looked at tiktok once before running away
I have had a series of carefully-navigated conversations with my LOVELY and WELL-MEANING coworkers at both of my dayjobs, in which they tell me all about their intent to buy the book to support me and visions of all the sex scenes flash luridly behind my eyelids, and then I remember that plausible deniablity exists and there's no fucking way they'll ever bring it up first, and a sale is a sale, and I thank them courteously for their support
but mostly, and truthfully, it's been amazing. I feel incredibly lucky.
(and don't worry: book 2's all done and handed in)

so a while ago @moosii sent me an ask about what kind of relationship dynamics I like in fiction, and I promised I’d mull over it for a bit
and over this weekend I watched season two of the umbrella academy, which I think is quite possibly the only piece of fiction I’ve consumed since answering that ask
so this is not even remotely exhaustive, but a dynamic I noticed myself enjoying a lot is this kind of, interactions between characters that don’t otherwise interact much
in the case of tua, the pair that stuck out to me were klaus and allison, whose arcs are kind of isolated for each other for a good chunk of the beginning of the season, but occasionally meet up to converse about where they’re at (the scene where they’re drinking together sticks out to me particularly)
but some examples from other fiction:
toph and iroh’s conversation in atla - two characters that we spend a long time following independently meeting for the first time with no context for who the other is
every time we get someone else’s pov about what skitter is like in worm, feels like a similar dynamic.  and this does happen quite a bit in worm, because they’re are just so many characters
in bakemonogatari, whenever characters other than araragi interact with each other lol
I think this works particularly well with big ensemble casts, so it’s a shame I don’t tend to go for those so much

Quarantine Questionnaire
@moosii tagged me in this post. (I appreciate the interest!)
ARE YOU STAYING HOME FROM WORK OR SCHOOL?
I'm working from home which I've been doing for years. The only difference is all of my teammates are now working from home too. We've been encouraged to use webcams during our meetings which I was initially hesitant to do but I'm fine with it now and think it adds a bit of personal connection. The webcam I'm using is one I bought at least fifteen years ago but it works fine. The focus is controlled by physically twisting the lens bezel.
IF YOU’RE STAYING HOME, WHO IS THERE WITH YOU?
My mom, who I've lived with since late 2015.
ARE YOU A HOMEBODY?
Kind of. When I lived in the suburbs I went out and did stuff more often but since moving to the country I mostly stay at home (apart from traveling out-of-state for work or personal reasons every month or three). We live in the sticks in Kentucky and have a big piece of property so I run and walk a lot.
AN EVENT THAT YOU WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT GOT CANCELLED?
One of my favorite musicians, Anna Meredith, was going to play some dates in the United States. Had the virus not already been on the horizon when she announced, I would have made plans to see her live for the first time in Chicago (a seven-hour drive).
WHAT MOVIES HAVE YOU WATCHED RECENTLY?
A very incomplete list:
Contagion (2011)
Hobbs & Shaw (2019)
Little Women (2019)
The Terminator (1984) (rewatch)
That Thing You Do! (1996) (rewatch)
WHAT SHOWS ARE YOU WATCHING?
Adventure Time (rewatching from the beginning)
Better Call Saul (so great!)
Devs
Superstore
What We Do in the Shadows
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU LISTENING TO?
Old and semi-old faves:
Anna Meredith
Genesis
Gentle Giant
J.S. Bach
Naomi Elizabeth
Yes
WHAT ARE YOU READING?
I'm not so great at reading long-form stuff lately; I have a few things I've started but haven't picked up in a while (e.g. Kernighan's Unix memoir) or have not yet started (Bach and Tuning) but the thing I'm making progress on is Bill Bruford's Uncharted: Creativity and the Expert Drummer, which is based on his doctoral dissertation. Bruford is my favorite drummer and it turns out after he retired from performing a few years ago he got a Ph.D. in music!
WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR SELF CARE?
Running and walking.
Cuddling with Cassandra.
Got a foot massage machine.
Hot baths (in our unfortunately tiny bathtub).
Musical noodling.
Haven't been playing the harpsichord as much lately because a string broke (D above middle C) and I haven't successfully replaced it yet. (There are several difficulties, e.g. winding it onto the tuning peg is much more difficult than the guitar equivalent and if you mess it up then the string—made of brass—is too metal-fatigued to reuse on the next try).
Not really into tagging people but if you’re reading this and would like to answer these questions consider yourself tagged.

Hi. First of all: I've followed your work for ages (since ouran fic) and I love it. Secondly: I read that you went to ANU! I go there!! (and I have a midsem tomorrow but can't sleep). Opinions/memories, fond or otherwise, on my hometown/ANU?
this landed in my inbox JUST as I jetted off to a conference, but I have been thinking about it all week. I suspect -- I know! -- that the campus looks different these days, there’s been a lot of construction work, new buildings, new food places. etc. nostalgia, wah wah wah.
a list, in no particular order, of memories of my undergrad years at ANU:
attending the queer soc champagne breakfast in o week, getting frankly and cheerfully pissed on mimosas by 11am, and then sleeping it off in the sun on the lawns of union court
the warm, gooey choc croissants that you could get from the bakery if you turned up at 7:30am, grimly armed for a first year psych stats lecture with pastry and coffee (which you were still teaching yourself to like)
in later years, the warm, gooey white choc and raspberry muffins you could get from the as-you-like-it cafe at the street theatre, if you turned up at 7:30am in order to get a good parking space and needed somewhere to sit and read until lectures started
the sheer outrage at being asked to walk to any lecture theatre further from manning clark than the physics building
those damn poster sales that took over the food court
discovering that the medical school computer labs were much nicer and much less likely to be full than the ones in hancock library, and nobody actually checked to see if you were a medical student
as a science student, getting abso-fucken-lutely lost somewhere in the wilderness of the arts precinct attempting to hand in a first year sociology essay
eating teriyaki noodles and studying physiology notes while waiting for choir rehearsal to start
memorising down to the damn MINUTE the time you would have to leave campus to walk into the city and catch your bus back home, allowing for the inevitable fifteen minutes you would spend getting distracted by the two book shops on the way
copies of honi soit left out on the union court lawns, rained on, and turning to papery mush
THURSDAY MARKETS, THAT MOST JOYFUL TIME OF THE WEEK
that one parasitology prac where she dumped a dead kangaroo on a pile of sawdust in the middle of the lab and announced that we were going to dissect it
caramel slice from the gods cafe (which I have actually gone back and eaten again, twice, since graduating; it is not as good as it was and I will die defending that truth)
in retrospect I seem to have spent a lot of time eating at uni
(A CORRECT ASSERTION)
(did I mention the white choc and raspberry muffins, I’m going to mention them again, best fucking muffin experience of my life to date)
(the end)
