Being a travelling bard is a lonelier existence than one might imagine. There are no concrete places, only the misty morning road with brief, warm stops along the way, singing words of praise to people Martin can’t know well enough to decide if they’re worthy to earn his supper

Martin thinks, or hopes, or hopes he thinks, that he could compose for the Ward of Magnus Keep forever. Maybe he’s not good enough to earn Jon’s love forever, to earn the right to stay, but he works harder each season, to express sincere love. More and more of his poems and songs speak of longing for a sombre eyed, moonhaired love, out of reach.

Jon takes some seasons to realise that he is the remote, serious, illuminating beauty in Martin’s songs, his reason to sing, and had been hopelessly pining, chastely, using the laws of courtly love his grandmother taught him. Martin, who never really spent much time with people older than his own mother, does not in his turn understand why Jon owns so many diaphanous scarves, or how he keeps losing them and Martin keeps finding them. They work it out.

Jon is fated for the cloister. He’s known that since he was old enough to know anything at all. He was orphaned, and Jonah took pity on his plight. Jonah has no heirs, and a claimed bastard is better than nothing (everyone knows Jon isn’t Jonah’s blood. Everyone knows he is nonetheless Jonah’s creature.)

There was once a wizard named Elias Bouchard, a braggart and no scholar. He was made Jonah’s creature, too, hollowed out and claimed. If Jonah makes enough, perhaps, perhaps, he can make the very beast of death his pet as well. Be king of the world, undying, in an endless war of attrition.

Kai snorts at the comparison, he doesn’t consider himself to be like their father in the slightest. He’s a good and kind man, but there’s not a lot of brains in his skull. He’d like to think he has more common sense than him. “ Nah, but I thought I’d come in here before you faced mom’s wrath. “ The elder sibling quietly chuckles, rubbing his hand against her hair, the static causing it to frizz up. 

He gets settled at the foot of her bed, crossing his legs as he sits. A frown forms on his lips when she mentions her lack of being able to sleep. It seems like ever since she came back Emily has been having a difficult time getting to bed. Not that Kai could blame her, what she went through was almost impossible to imagine. He was just thankful she was back at home, alive and well. 

“ I dunno, I can’t really get to sleep either I guess, “ Kai admits. The amount of stress and effort he’d experienced to attempt and save his sister had been rough on both his mind and body. If there had been any sleep schedule in the young man’s life, it was nonexistent now. He’d sometimes have their mother or father waking him up in the early afternoon for him to do his chores. “ You know, I keep thinking...’bout how if I was with you guys on that trip, maybe I would’ve been able to keep you outta danger. “

          Though perhaps not nearly as ghastly as some ghouls he knew to walk the earth, Marley knew that he was hardly a pleasant sight, bound in iron like he was. That made it that much harder for him to believe that anyone would even think of approaching him. And yet, with his own eyes he could see her coming toward him. Surely she must not have been able to see him, that was the only explanation...or it would be if she wasn’t looking directly at him.

          The ghost shrank back slightly, not out of fear but with no small amount of distrust. One never knew how those that could see spirits reacted to them. “Don’t you think it’s a bit of an odd night to be out wandering in the dark?” Jacob attempted to sound casual, but he was rusty, out of the habit of talking to strangers. She was closer now, a fair-haired thing whose age Marley couldn’t quite place, though whether that was due to his own age or the dimness of the light he wasn’t sure. Regardless, she seemed young, which put his mind somewhat at ease. “A graveyard is not where most people spend Christmas Eve.”

Mary had come out into the alley to smoke; she had been pushing her luck with Penguin’s patience enough recently, and wasn’t in the mood to get thrown out on her ass. She sat, cigarette glowing between her fingertips, on the little set of stairs. The EXIT sign glowing high above her head made her look green and sickly.

“I mean it, you walking cavity. I’m not in the mood.”

it’s supposed to be a time for warmth. a time for lightness and peace and ease. magic twinkles around in the lights- in the eyes of children as soon as the first snow falls. she can remember that light around the holidays so fondly though now all she feels is stress, a never ending list of things that have to get done and now with news of this blizzard-- well nell could not quite stop her face from paling or her mouth dropping. 

“ do... do you really think it’ll be that bad? “ she swallowed, putting on a smile though it might not have been all too convincing. “ i’m supposed to pick up my brother. drive him here for the weekend... “

Zoey’s guilty pleasure was consuming any form of media that involved true crime; podcasts, documentaries, twitter threads, she ate it all up! She couldn’t help it! She fit the description of the kind of girl who could be a victim, so she wanted to know everything she could to keep her safe! She wanted to know why they did it, who the victims were them, and what the patterns were. She couldn’t get enough; she liked to know why, but it made her feel gross when people she talked to in forums and even on her tumblr would try to romanticize killers. 

Like, ew, no. Not even a little hot.

This wasn’t like a hot cowboy, pirate, prince, or rich-boy-who-liked-green-lights type deal. This wasn’t fantasy. This boy wasn’t going to be a sexy Tom Hiddleston in a long black wig who had a penchant for chaos, these were killers! This was reality. And it was gross.
