Black history fact: Marley Dias launched the #1000BlackGirlBooks drive in November of 2015, leveraging the power of social media to reach a larger audience. The goal was to collect 1,000 books featuring Black female protagonists by February 2016. The story went viral and was picked up by media outlets around the world as well as bloggers, schools, youth-focused organizations and millions of individuals who wanted to participate in the project. “I was only 11 years old, and admittedly I didn’t know what this spotlight would mean for my life,” she said, later adding: Looking back now, I realize that I was almost numb to the experience. I focused on making sure that the world understood racial and gender exclusion issues that I didn’t take any time to enjoy these special moments. While I wish I had soaked up more of the perks along the way, I am proud of my unrelenting focus and hard work. I want our society to see, hear, and value those often excluded, starting with girls like me. I began by aiming to collect 1,000 books where Black girls were the main character because I am a Black girl, and I knew what exclusion felt for Black girls. I always try my best to be clear that I want us to create space for ALL of us, that’s why I support campaigns led by other kids with entirely different experiences than mine...I have now collected over 13,000 books where Black girls are the main character. With the right encouragement and resources, a story of activism like mine will become the norm rather than an exception. Black women just be out here saving lives. Ya welcome! ✊🏾 A Black woman from North Carolina will go down in history for leading the effort to solve the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, a research fellow and scientific lead at the National Institute of Health, is on the frontlines working with a team of scientists, studying Moderna's vaccine, one of the two COVID-19 vaccines shown to be effective by more than 90 percent. Posted @withregram • @kizzyphd The guy in the back was running outside to tell me that the steps were private property and I needed to take my picture from the sidewalk. *poses & snaps photo anyway* Today, people will get vaccinated with a vaccine that I woke up on Jan. 11th to frantically help design. I remember the day, in February, when mRNA-1273 arrived to our lab at NIAID Vaccine Research Center, and mice awaited in the basement for their injections. At the time, we just had our sights on a phase 1 clinical trial by 100 days, with no idea the virus would spread into a pandemic. 66 days passed from the viral sequence release, and the first human was injected with the vaccine in a phase 1 trial. 9 months later, today, after 76,000,000 COVID cases globally... people in the US will receive the vaccine under emergency use authorization. Lives are about to be saved. Hospitals will become less overwhelmed. Normal times will slowly begin again. And, I might rent out these steps and throw a party. @jeezy on the entertainment. *cues “Put on”* #blackbookstagram #maddblackreads #blackbibliophile #wellreadblackgirl #blackreaders #moodreadersclub #goodreads #ireadya #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #becauseofblackreaders #diversifybookstagram #readersofinstagram #fortheloveofreading #blackgirlsread #lovetoread #blackwomenread #blackandbookish #bookreview #blackbookblogger #becauseofreading #readblackauthors #goodblackreads #bookrecommendation #moodreader #readallthebooks #blackwomenwedabest https://www.instagram.com/p/CK4VIjygUnd/?igshid=gdjhhm122y3p

Did you know? Author Ann Petry (1908 – 1997) was an American writer who became the first black woman author that achieved book sales of over 1 million copies for the novel, “The Street” published in 1946. Her book, The Street, is one that's on my list to read this year. Have you read any of Ann Petry? She is also an author listed in the Zora Canon (@zora) of 100 best books of Black Women. #blackbookstagram #maddblackreads #blackbibliophile #wellreadblackgirl #blackreaders #moodreadersclub #goodreads #ireadya #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #becauseofblackreaders #diversifybookstagram #readersofinstagram #fortheloveofreading #blackgirlsread #lovetoread #blackwomenread #blackandbookish #bookreview #blackbookblogger #becauseofreading #readblackauthors #goodblackreads #bookrecommendation #moodreader #readallthebooks #zoracanon #annpetry https://www.instagram.com/p/CKroE6Zg9TJ/?igshid=ka8qv6siqe5l

“We mean business now and we are determined to gain our rightful place in God's world. And that's all this whole thing is about. We aren't engaged in any negative protest and in any negative arguments with anybody. We are saying that we are determined to be men. We are determined to be people. We are saying, that we are God's children. And if we are God's children, we don't have to live like we are forced to live.” - Rev. A lil' James Baldwin for your timeline. "People who treat other people as less than human must not be surprised when the bread they have cast on the waters comes floating back to them, poisoned." The Green Book was used exclusively for travel during the journey for Kezi in the novel, "One of the Good Ones" by Maika Moulite and Maritza Moulite. Named after its creator Victor H. Green, a postal worker in New York, the Green Books were published between the 1930s and the 1960s, halting when the Civil Rights Act finally ended the legal practice of segregation. The original Green Book, published in 1937, is fairly limited, with only 16 pages. But by the 1960s the publication was around 100 pages filled with hotels, restaurants, attractions, and homes that black travelers could safely visit. "The ‘Green Book’ tried to provide a tool to deal with those situations,” he said. “It also allowed families to protect their children, to help them ward off those horrible points at which they might be thrown out or not permitted to sit somewhere. It was both a defensive and a proactive mechanism.”(Lonnie Bunch) “You think about the things that most travelers take for granted, or most people today take for granted. If you go to New York City and want a haircut, it’s pretty easy for me to find a place where that can happen, but it wasn’t easy then. White barbers would not cut black people’s hair. White beauty parlors would not take black women as customers—hotels and so on, down the line,” he said. “You needed the ‘Green Book’ to tell you where you can go without having doors slammed in your face.” (Julian Bond) #blackbookstagram #maddblackreads #blackbibliophile #wellreadblackgirl #blackreaders #moodreadersclub #goodreads #ireadya #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #becauseofblackreaders #booknerdigan #readersofinstagram #fortheloveofreading #blackgirlsread #lovetoread #blackwomenread #blackandbookish #blackbookblogger #becauseofreading #readingrainbow #goodblackreads #negromotoristgreenbook https://www.instagram.com/p/CJUQXIMAUFR/?igshid=1irgen8ktl0qn
