Lately I have been noticing myself more often.

When I say that I guess I mean I’ve been more conscious of myself, but I’m not sure if that’s really the right word. It’s not really a “becoming aware” like being conscious is, it’s just a noticing like you notice your friend is wearing red shoes.

Not that you notice they’re wearing NEW red shoes, mind you. Just taking note of their outfit, is all.

I live in a smaller town area where Christianity is a big thing, mostly Baptist. You can imagine how conservative it is. We don’t get a lot of “alternative” kids, but when we find each other, we stick to each other. I didn’t grow up here. I grew up in a bigger city where you’d see alternative kids at least twice a day. But I was still in a very Christian and conservative environment, mostly at school (my parents were and still are very lax and not super conservative like some might think), so I got used to being the odd one out. The only one with leather jackets and battered Chucks and Docs in a sea of kids whose parents wouldn’t even let them get their ears pierced or read Harry Potter.

(And I understand “alternative” is a very broad term, I know it’s nuanced. But you get the point. Also, I don’t mean conservative in the political sense, not really; mostly just conservative values.)

Maybe two weeks ago I was walking across the street downtown, thinking about how cool I must look right now with my new leather overcoat and the platform Doctor Martens I bought off a coworker. I was on my way to see Monty Python and the Holy Grail with my cousin. Then I noticed that the people in their cars were probably watching me cross the street the way I watch pedestrians crossing the street when I’m first in the line of cars.

A couple days ago I went to Walmart. I don’t remember what I was there for, maybe some sort of office supply? Doesn’t matter. I got out of my car and saw two women leaving the store as I was walking through the parking lot. The two women didn’t say anything, I don’t even think they really looked at me, but it made me notice myself. I was wearing a new Metallica shirt, my work-in-progress patch pants, Doc Martens on my feet. I do remember that, what I was wearing. Because it made me think, “it must be so strange to these women to see a person dressed like this”.

Today I went to Target to buy Fall Out Boy’s new album and the same thing happened. Today I was wearing my jean vest (complete with pins and a mural on the back dedicated to Suicidal Tendencies’s song Institutionalized), my trusty loose black pants, two chains hanging from the belt loops, same black Doc Martens. As I passed a woman on the phone, I thought, “how often do these people see someone like myself?”

It’s not that I’m wondering if they’re judging me. I’m well past that. I got past that in 5th grade. In fact, I haven’t really gotten any nasty comments or judgmental stares thrown at me, mostly just my parents wanting me to show their friends my battle jacket.

But I’ve heard stories. The threat is always there. I just don’t care enough to heed the warning.

I’m just noticing how I look to other people. I’m the girl on the street that the older, more conservative generations (boomers) pray for, hoping I’ll find Jesus, when the reality is He found me and now we talk every night before bed.

I don’t want this to be a story about my experiences as the alt kid in a conservative circle, that’s for another post.

But I have been noticing myself lately.

Sirius Black felt powerful. For the first time in his life, he felt like he could control everyone. The looks people were shooting at him. . . awe and fear rolled into one. . . he thrived on it. It was like a drug; he knew he shouldn't like that they were scared of him, but he couldn't help it. Ever since he'd run away to James', bloodied and bruised and begging for a place to stay, he'd loved feeling power over others.

James didn't know about his new look, of course — he would've gone batshit crazy. As much as he loved Effie and Monty, they would not have approved. And that was why he'd snuck away to do it. His parents, evidently, cared very much about his new look. Orion had recoiled in disgust, Walburga's hand had flown to her mouth in horror and Regulus had just stared, mouth agape. He smirked, flipping them the V's as he boarded the train.

People scuttled out of his way as he made his way to his friends' usual compartment. A few people in his year glanced at him before doing a double-take, eyes practically popping out of their heads. A few of the girls looked him up and down appreciatively and one Hufflepuff boy winked at him, biting his lip. Sirius blushed, surprised at how flustered the boy had made him.

Sirius pulled the compartment door open, flinching at how fast James jumped up. He opened his mouth to say something but closed his mouth almost instantly, then opened it again; he looked like a very messy-haired fish. James' eyes trailed up and down his body, a pink flush adorning his cheeks.

"You. . . what. . .?" He muttered, eyes returning to Sirius' face. The new piercings in his ear swung back and forth as Sirius tilted his head to the side, grinning at James. His tongue darted out to flick his new lip ring and suddenly James was lunging for him.

"Thames, wot the thuck?"

Sirius staggered as the taller boy grabbed his tongue. He felt James prod at the silver ball pierced through his tongue before angry hazel eyes were fixed on him. James took in the dark eyeliner, black-painted nails, thuggish Dr Martens, leather jacket and too many rings before grabbing Sirius' arm, dragging him out of their compartment into a different one.

"What else did you do, idiot?" He demanded, angrily running his hands through his thick, curly hair. Sirius tugged on his lip ring before shrugging off his jacket and lifting his t-shirt up.

If James wasn't red before, he definitely was now.

Tattooed on Sirius' left peck was the constellation Canis Major, the Gryffindor lion was tattooed across his ribs and an assortment of runes were inked into his chest. Sirius held his shirt between his teeth as he tugged his black ripped jeans lower, showing his final tattoo; just two words, stamped across his v-line.

1. Nicknames: well, my name is Harriet, so there are the obvious ones like Hattie and Harry, but also Yorkie bc I'm fucking obsessed with The Bill and don't my friends know it.

2. Zodiac: Pisces (and I really do love pizza).

3. Height: 5′7” or 5'8", I'm not really sure. Maybe I'll just go down the middle and say 5'7½"

4. Last thing I Googled: "Do blue and brown go together?" I was trying to style a pair of flares with a tank top that had navy in it, but it kept giving me tips on how to decorate my living room.

5. Song Stuck in My Head: Well, there are two stuck in there simultaneously and it's very annoying, especially since one of them is 'I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major General' (yes, still) and the other is 'Any Dream Will Do' from Joseph.

6. Number of Followers: 132

7. Amount of sleep I got: About 8 hours, but that was from about 2am bc I was working until midnight and then I couldn't stop reading fanfiction. That did mean I missed my first lecture type thing, but I am a student, so it wouldn't be right if I didn't miss something.

Lucky Number: 24 bc it's the date of Stephen Fry's birthday and I'm a creep, but also bc it reminds me of when I had a massive obsession with him when I was about 14 (not that I don't still) and I used the name Stephen in a story I was writing in English club and the teacher came and asked me if I knew that "he bats for the other team." Um, yes I fucking know, this is my young closeted bisexual self begging for help. She was a bitch though, so...

9. Favorite song: That is a very hard question. Um, idk, I want to say 'Home In The Morning' by Tom Robinson bc it's beautiful and definitely worth listening to, but it could also be anything by Billy Joel or Monty Python's Galaxy Song. It really depends on my mood.

10. Favourite instrument: the violin bc I'm basic and also obsessed with Sherlock Holmes (but Jeremy Brett's version bc he is superior in every way and you can't convince me otherwise).

11. Dream Job: Blue Peter presenter. Or comedian. Realistically though, teacher.

12. Aesthetic: Again, idek. Sometimes 70s, which is probably my favourite. Usually a lot of black, hoodies and a load of obscure, nerdy t-shirts. Sometimes middle aged woman (I shop in White Stuff, I'm literally a 50 year old English teacher) and sometimes James May. I almost always wear Doc Martens though, so at least there's some consistency. I've gone through so many pairs of the shoes and I have at least 3 pairs of the boots. Idek if that answer works, but fuck it, I literally can't give anything more concrete than that.

13. Favorite Author: Another difficult question bc I much prefer non fiction (autobiographies), and if I do read fiction, it's usually fanfiction or television books (books adapted from TV like the Doctor Who novels, the Shoestring novels, The Bill novels, the Red Dwarf novels and probably any others you can think of). Probably Roald Dahl though because I loved his children's books when I was little and I love his adult stories now. I even used him as a style model for my A-Level English Language coursework.
