The Panama hat originated in Montecristi, Ecuador, as the Monument to the Manabita Weaver proclaims. They are called "Panama" hats due to a famous photo of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt wearing one during a 1906 visit to the site of the Panama Canal.

THE DESCRIPTION OF OUR LADY OF MONTSERRAT (aka La Moreneta) Feast Day: April 27
The Catholic Church will observe the feast day of Our Lady of Montserrat, the popular Black Madonna of Spain.
Widely venerated in Catalonia, Spain, where devotion to the La Moreneta (Black Madonna) originated, as well as in Puerto Rico and Ecuador, Our Lady of Montserrat is well known for her miraculous intercessory powers.
Hundreds of pilgrims and devotees visit her major shrine at the foot of Montecristi Hill in Ecuador every year.
In Catalonia, Spain, where Our Lady has been widely venerated since the 12th century, the Shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat is a popular pilgrimage site. She is the Patron Saint of Catalonia, an honor she shares with Saint George.
In the country, the Our Lady of Montserrat Church in San Beda College, Manila was built in honor of the patroness of the Benedictine monks of Manila. Devotion to her is also widespread in Jaro, Iloilo City where a parish church has been erected in her honor.
According to tradition, the image of the Black Madonna with the Child Jesus was carved by St. Luke the Evangelist around 50 A.D. and was brought to Spain. An 18th century polychrome statue of the same image that was gifted by former president João Goulart of Brazil on the Papal election of Pope Paul VI in 1963, is also displayed in Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy. Previously stored in the Vatican Museums, the image has been on display for Papal masses since the Pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI.
On September 11, 1881, the image was canonically crowned in accordance with Canon Law and was proclaimed as the patroness of Catalonia by Pope Leo XIII. Many pilgrims paid homage to her including Saints Vincent Ferrer, Ignatius of Loyola, Aloysius Gonzaga, Peter Claver, and Anthony Mary Claret.
The Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat in Barcelona is the founding monastery of the Benedictines in the Philippines. The first Benedictine monks arrived in the country in 1895.

Marty / マーティ and Gomez / ゴメス
Marty (JP: マーティ; rōmaji: māti) is a member of Dagdar's band of ex-bandits on Mount Violdrake in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. His name likely comes from José Martí (JP: ホセ・マルティ; rōmaji: maruti), a Cuban poet, philosopher, and one of the leading figures in Cuba's war for independence from Spain. He founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party and organized much of the efforts against the Spanish Empire. He had strained relations with the more militant members of the movement, fearing that some would seize an opportunity to make Cuba a military dictatorship. Martí was killed in action in the Battle of Dos Ríos, serving as a massive blow to the revolutionaries' morale.
Gomez (JP: ゴメス; rōmaji: gomesu) is a member of Dagdar's former mountain bandits, who rises against his boss and returns to banditry when things turn south. He is most likely named after Máximo Gómez (JP: マクシモ・ゴメス; rōmaji: makushimo gomesu), a Dominican and Cuban general during the War of Independence, and thought by Martí to have intentions to convert Cuba to a military dictatorship. Despite their misgivings, after thorough planning Martí and Gómez came together to commence their uprising and signed the Manifesto de Montecristi, announcing their goal to rid the yoke of the regime over Cuba. Gómez was a very controversial figure, as he employed an intense scorched-earth policy, targetting the property of both Cubans still loyal to Spain and Americans, and was not afraid to use torture to get loyalists to talk.
References to revolutionary figures in general are appropriate for Thracia 776, but aspects of José Martí and Máximo Gómez seem to be reflected in-game. Marty places his loyalties in Dagdar, only briefly allying with Gomez out of fear for his life. This could be indicative of Martí's loyalty to his home of Cuba, though he could not personally instigate change within for a long time due to exile. Marty's lack of enthusiasm in combat could also be based upon Martí strained relations with the Cuban military, and his rare appearances on the battlefield. Gomez, on the other hand, rebels with understandable reasoning but with the intent of taking leadership, possibly based on Martí's concerns about Gómez forming a dictatorship. He also targets the commonfolk and their resources for self-preservation, similar to the extent of Gómez's scorched-earth policy.

January 29, 2023 - Day 33
Manta, Equinor - San Pablo de Manta is a seaport on Equinor’s central coast. It has a large tuna-fishing industry. There were at least 30 tuna boats close to where we docked including several very large commercial boats that were unloading thousands of pounds of tuna. There is a very nice promenade along a beach that was full of people. Also a very modern shopping center with many young adults walking around just like in the States.
We took a tour up to Montecristi, Equinor which is famous for its Panama hats. They told us they are called Panama hats because Teddy Roosevelt was wearing one when he dedicated the Panama Canal and the name stuck. I put several videos below of women hand weaving the hats. They are made of very thin straw hand separated from fronds of the toquilla palm which grows in the tropical coastal area of Ecuador. There are four grades of hats depending on the number of weaves per square inch and they range in price from $60 to over $4000 for the very best.
We also stopped by a shop that uses the leaves of the green agave to manufacture a thread that is used to make all kinds of bags and baskets. I posted a few videos of the process below.
