Claywyrm

A small creature, usually found at riverbanks. The claywyrm is a long and thin creature that inhabits large golems of clay that they form themself from a riverbed. They creep inside the golem, twisting and turning, and are capable of giving it slow locomotion. The older the wyrm, the longer it will be - the older the golem, the more polished and perfected it will be. An older, longer, thicker claywyrm will be able to move with more power, and a more perfected golem will be swifter. They are very rarely a threat, and can be taken out by most combatants. They are sometimes used in training fields, due to their low danger level and ability to regenerate. The claywyrm reproduces when it is split in two by an external force, or when its golem breaks and it cannot find new clay (in which case it splits into hundreds of tiny claywyrms). 

The claywyrm can live off merely water and nutrients from the clay, but without an influx of new clay every few years they will likely meet their demise.

Mountainwyrm

A claywyrm that never split, nor lost its golem. A claywyrm that grew and grew, until it had strength enough to split stone, thirst enough to drain rivers. It twists its way through an entire mountain, plaguing the surrounding area with earthquakes and rockfalls. Its coils are the living, breathing, veins of the mountain, and will defend its home from all those it deems a threat. 

Fleshwyrm

Legends tell of a variant of claywyrm that seeks not for clay, but to puppet a living body. Capable of taking on the mannerisms of that which came before it, and slotting into their place, oft the only way to learn of the change is the lack of growth experienced by the subject. Capable of possessing humans and monsters alike, entire towns have been put to the torch from mere allegations of fleshwyrm activity.

DQM3 - Monster Lore

Getting back into Dragon Quest Monsters 3: The Dark Prince. I've been training newly synthesized monsters extremely slowly, which isn't working, so I think I'll try farming metal slimes. I like to read all the Monsterpedia entries as I acquire new monsters; they're always full of surprises!

Several entries hint at the differences between "monsters" and "animals". Fat rat obviously has an "animal counterpart", while drohl drone apparently could have gone either way. Meanwhile, bludgerigar's entry details how to COOK AND EAT IT.

Wait, I had no idea budgie was short for budgerigar! The localization team really put an immense amount of effort into the punny monster names. But... I still wish they were closer to the original Japanese names. Bludgerigar is "pikkii", how cute is that!

Sometimes the monster names do make me smile. I hatched an egg and asked, "Who's this fella?" Why, a tree feller!

I know it's all in fun, but it's kind of disturbing how many monsters are described as having once been human. We see references to this in the main series as well (like Nimzo in DQV). The hubris of one evil human is one thing, but it's just too unsettling to apply this origin story to a whole species of monster. I prefer to interpret these stories as dubious myths about the creation of the FIRST togre or morphean mushroom.

When Rider finally joins with the Monsties, the Science Department will be all over them studying everything about Rider's Monstie companions. The Monsterpedia being a goldmine of information for them to study and even make innovations for the Defense Force Officers.

Cue Kafka just jumping in as he rather not have his whelps get overwhelmed by the Science Department's curiosity. Like any parent, he works out a schedule with them for stuff like examinations and check ups. Kafka actually been making a copy of the Monsterpedia that includes personal notes so it's easier to access than constantly borrowing Rider's own.

You can bet they had fun designing a nest for the unhatched Monster Eggs and a cozy stable for the Monsties. Also someone always has a camera on them. This mainly cause Kafka tends to sneak in the incubator room to snuggle amongst the eggs, the casual Monstie cuddle pile or newborn Monstie baby pics.

And another book complete! Tied up in a bow and shipped. There's a bit of relief there. But I feel I also learned stuff. And I've got a plan on what I'm doing next.

For those not interested in going through 200k+ words to get to that I'll toss them up here too.

"The big thing I noticed is that a lot of what people love is world and character building. Probably why litrpg does so well, because it's a hefty dose of crack for both. But there's a great deal of desire for non standard building. The response the monsterpedias got was far above and beyond what I expected for filler (even with cute slime Fili as a cheat). The problem that I (and a lot of authors have) is that at some point your world is built. You either start going so deep into the weeds that the flaws show, or you run out of ideas. Especially if you're centered in a fixed city.

(Big secondary problem : World building and plot advancing don't always play together and you need to maintain the balance between 'what people came here for' and 'having a story worth caring about.)

Another thing I noticed is I am easily hit by character bloat. I can't write characters out easily. That's partly a me problem and partly a story design problem. If people stick around why wouldn't they get to know each other and rely on them for help?

Next personal issue : I'm terrible at responding to readers as webfictions usually do. Now I know I'm never gonna be the type of writer who has a discord to jabber about stuff 24/7, but I do think I can cater my extras more to things that interested commentators.

Lastly I find I have issues with deadlines. Not hitting them specifically. A deadline is a great way to force me to write 9 times out of 10. But in terms of quality I think there's an impact. And especially in terms of setup / payoff. I need to find a deadline balance to properly push stories out while not getting locked up purely in delivery mode.

So what do all these words mean?

For my Helena books? Nothing, I'm gonna keep at it making solid medium length fiction. Hoping to have another one edited and out sometime next year.

For more webnovel style fiction? I'm going to play to strengths. Traveling adventurers, unique viewpoint character, episodic regional plots, and a deliberate focus on interesting locale details. I've already got a new story started, and with this one done I hope to increase the speed of writing. My goal is ~100k ready before starting to post giving me a solid starter for people to enjoy, while leaving gaps in the extra sets to flesh out setting details readers are interested in. And also get some art commissioned and in hand.

a demon case had the nightmares involving brady back in full swing. it wasn't easy to talk about, especially after when they twisted into images of her entire family slain in her childhood home. while jessica tried to push the winchesters as much as possible to open up and talk about their own things, she always seemed to fall back in the cycle of not wanting to add to sam's plate with her old and rehashed trauma.

it's been about five days since and she's not had more than two hours of sleep at a time, brought on by her body pulling her under -- only to wake her up in a cold sweat once again. each night, she had carefully extricated herself from the motel bed beside sam, and usually passed the time by carefully crafting her own version of a 'monsterpedia', similar to john's journal but without the personal information or adding to her heavily guarded sketchbook, charcoal pencils in hand.

in the mornings, she had been brushing it off with white lies that she'd woken up shortly before sam and started a pot of coffee, rather than admitting that she's been sipping on hers since two am. tonight she had needed a distraction. she had fallen asleep beside him for a couple of hours, but had woken up with a racing heart and an image burned into her eyelids of the demon's cruel sneer with one of their kitchen knives embedded in brady's chest.

sam's laptop in tow, she sat at the table of the kitchenette of the motel room, separated from the beds by an open doorway. volume on the lowest possible setting, she was researching popular songs she'd missed out on while she was dead. trying to become familiar with the lyrics. in this respect, she had gotten more interested in rap than she would be otherwise, simply because it had more words for her to memorize. something to focus on longer, distracting her mind to quell the anxiety coursing through her veins.

tonight, though, she had discovered that they had made the musical mamma mia! into a movie and was hunting for all clips she could get her hands on. when sam finds her, she's passed out with her head resting on her arm and the muffled sounds of the waterloo credit scene playing from a pirated website. when he hoists her up from the table, she wakes up briefly, a wild look in her eyes as her hand clasps his shirt. a few seconds later her mind catches up to remind her she isn't in danger and it's only sam.

she's too tired to string a sentence together, letting her hand drop to her stomach. a sheepish smile serving as an apology stretches across her face as she snuggles into his chest. her hand finds his shirt again as he leans down to pull the covers over her frame. she's struggling to keep her eyes open as they search for his face in the dark above her. ❝ stay. ❞she manages to whisper as she gives the front of his shirt a weak tug. she doesn't know what time it is, but even in her half asleep state -- she doesn't want to be in the bed alone.

random things that have happened in the 6+ months i have been running my dnd campaign

sent out a poll asking players to pick some monsters they wanted to fight and one of them missed the link to the monsterpedia so all of his answers were like "big spider" and "ice guy"

player ate a golden apple, turned into a goat, and successfully ripped open another player's bag to reveal more stolen golden apples that she then had to throw away

party broke into a farm and realized that the barn dogs were based on the host's IRL dogs and everyone lost their minds

player had a pseudodragon with one attack (bite) and insisted she had finally written down how the attack worked, only to discover that she had just written down the word "bite" and nothing else

party watched said pseudodragon fly into a gelatinous cube and get Dissolved (he can be resurrected he fine)

players insisted on going thru a danger swamp and one of them got dragged into a lake by an alligator and everyone had to wait while i looked up how drowning worked

our most innocent character met a prostitute and the rest of the party had to explain the world's oldest profession to a being who was like a year old

players spent an entire session hunting down a missing general in a Hangover-esque hunt until they finally found him and it was Jamie Fraser, causing our jamie fraser fan to start hysterically screaming

player was trying to sneak into a town under an invisibility spell, the spell failed and wore off, so in a panic she shouted "I DROP TO THE GROUND UNDER MY CLOAK AND PRETEND TO BE A ROCK" and she got a nat 20 and it worked and i was so proud and mad

two players were the final two in a tournament and they are irl husband and wife and when the husband won no one cheered for him bc we thought we were about to witness his divorce
