So it certainly is possible i’m looking to much at the subtext of “the horror of hormak”, so I pulled out my copy. And yeah, nothing beyond heavily implied subtext.
The smell of seawater coming deep from in a cave. In a landlocked Nevarran forest? Knowing pride had asked her to drive monsters into the depths of the sea? The “priestesses” face from the fresco’s turning more and more cruel. The description of the Elven architecture.
And this: “On the topmost band, stately Elvhen kings and queens held court, their people kneeling before them in respectful supplication. On the middle, scene’s of healing and succor, of disease and injury being drawn forth from the sick and dying by elvhen mages. And on the bottom, aravels, far mor elaborate and grandiose then any that Ramesh had ever seen, pulled by armies of halla towards distant mountains— one of which, he realized with a start, was that same mountain that they were now beneath, the three jagged peaks twisted around each other easily distinguishable in the detailed carvings. [….] the same symbol—the horns of a halla—repeated on each column.”
See? Horns of the halla. Which ghillan’nain is famous for creating.
Its subtext, but heavy one. It goes on to say the aravels started to look like prison—ships. And elvhen rulers betrayed a contempt on closer inspection. The people not kneeling in praise, but cowering in terror. The temple or workplace or whatever, is a twisted variation of the Well of Sorrows, still doing what it has been ordered to. To make monsters.
It is also i think heavily implied that maybe this is the origine of the darkspawn. And there are still 11 other places like this to find.
Like yeah, I could be wrong. But it is likely, Ghillan’nain’s monsters are still being made.

The fate of the Evanuris
Veilguard, and the artbook too, leave little room to this topic but I have a thing or two to add anyway. The Evanuris are gone; Ghilan'nain and Elgar'nan both killed by the Veilguard, Flemythal gone since Inquisition, and as we learned now the others still in the prison possibly dead or too far gone from the Blight to count as living. Oh, and Solas trapped in the Fade for eternity. But are all of them truly lost and gone?
In Inquisition Solas is very much against the Warden’s plan of preemptively killing the Archdemons to prevent future Blights, he’s very vocal about it but somehow not worried enough, if that makes sense. As if killing the archdemons beforehand is something he’d lament for the creatures themselves, and not for something more. Veilguard shows us the Old Gods, the “archdemons” were the Evanuris’ “dragon thralls”, a thrall is someone bound in service, under someone else’s power. The Evanuris bound powerful dragons to themselves. I was right about it, the Old Gods were the Evanuris draconic mounts or vessels as I called them, sort of like their pets, but bigger and adding to their power with their own. It’s implied very subtly that the reason why the Evanuris were immortal was because of these dragons, much like how an Archdemon’s soul can jump into the nearest blighted creature and live on, the same applied to the Evanuris; if slain, they could use their dragons to keep going. An archdemon is a lesser creature by comparison so that might explain why their souls could use any other blighted creature, or a Warden, but an Evanuris spirit must be very loaded, too much to contain, which would be the reason why they had dragons as vessels, should they need them.
Solas points out in order to defeat these two Rook had to first get rid of their dragons, to make them mortal. It isn’t until Razikale is slained that Ghilan’nain learns she can bleed, and later be killed. It isn’t until Solas defeats Lusacan that Elgar’nan can be defeated. Through the Blight and all their magic the Evanuris had linked their immortality to their dragons, but failed to consider making their dragons immortal as well.
So what does this mean to the other Evanuris? Where are they? Solas’ reaction in Inquisition, in retrospective, doesn’t strike me as that of someone who knows killing their thralls kills them too. But if they’re all blighted, and the worst of the Blight is contained in the same prison they were in for millennia, and killing their dragons makes them mortal….could it be the other Evanuris died from the Blight itself? Once their dragons were slained they became mortal, and nothing else was there to protect them from the Blight, and that’s why Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain whose dragons still remained where the ones to survive this long, and therefore the only ones left standing when Solas opened the Veil. In a letter to Elgar’nan once they got out Ghilan’nain expresses her wishes of building a monument to Andruil in their new empire, because she’s dead. Now I wonder was Andruil dead before or did she die while in the black city, after her dragon Andoral was slained, leaving her susceptible to the Blight? If she was the one who first caught the Blight, made herself an armor of it, went mad from it...when exactly did she pass? From Solas’ regret murals she’s inlcuded in the imprisonment, so this is a bit confusing.
Tumblr media
Also, was Ghil always so tentacly and limby? If making creatures and enhancing them is her one true passion, did she, perhaps, add limbs and tentacles enhancing herself with the remains of the fallen Evanuris? Are her extra arms and extended torso contributions from Andruil’s corpse?? She makes no mention of having her added to herself, but the sickening love was there, and she’s very cold when it comes to materials; maybe she identified the Andruil she loved was no longer in that body, and took the body for parts. I feel somehow someone so obssessed with enhancing and monstermaking could not spend millennia trapped in a bubble without doing something. And if the people around her continued to just drop dead, maybe she did do something...She wouldn’t do it to Elgar’nan though, so she did it to herself. She’s ...very much capable of it.
But then, where does this dying with no dragon while imprisoned leave June? The soul of his dragon could be preserved, through the OGB ritual, and we see Flemythal passing a soul through an Eluvian, to where? If Urthemiel’s soul persists, could it be possible June’s does too? They were spirits first, and when spirits die they become fragments of a whole. Is Urthemiel’s soul just chilling in the Fade, oblivious to it all, or did Mythal send it elsewhere? One of her daughters had a dragon sanctuary, what if that’s where it went? What if Mythal granted Urthemiel a new body, therefore perhaps saving June’s spirit?
I suspect the reason June got all those mentions in Veilguard all of a sudden may be related to that scene in Inquisition, to Urthemiel's soul retrieved from OGB Kieran and presumably sent away by Flemythal. And maybe, just maybe, however small, there's a chance June is the last remaining Evanuris, still in slumber in the original prison, and if Solas is now on the same side of the Veil doing his best to calm the Blight, what if he wakes up?
I'm ready for Dragon Age 5: Arts&Crafts with June, i'd play the hell out of that.

Look I'm not a monsterfucker. I'm a monstersnuggler, a monsterkisser, a monsterdater at best.
But the monsterfuckers and the monstermakers need their joy too.
Let them have it. Do not kinkshame the monsterfuckers, you guys. These folks deserve to spend their hard earned money on artisanal haldcrafted monster porn if they want. And the monstermakers deserve to get payed for their artisanal handmade monster porn. They worked hard on it. Don't shame people who are willing to pony up for it.
being an adult and trying to be "responsible with my money" is so hard like literally what corners am I supposed to be cutting on this budget. what am I supposed to stop spending money on. my anxiety meds? food for my cats? impulsive takeout orders? spotify premium? patreon artists who draw huge throbbing monster dicks? all of these are completely necessary to maintain my quality of life.

Alright, so this is gonna be a bit of a longer post, I'm gonna give some how to use info as we go as well as a bit of my philosophy when it comes to design.
At my table, my players tend to be more combat-driven. They dip into roleplay a bit, and we've had some fun sessions without any combat, but in the end they love to optimize their characters and absolutely fuck shit up. To them, combat is the focus.
When I look to make an enemy or encounter, my goal is always to challenge the players and prevent them from getting locked into 5v1s with the monster, overpowering the enemy with their sheer number of attacks. This means that a monster needs some sort of ability that keeps them either able to move or able to force the players to move such as a shove, an alternate target to take out, or just general overwhelming melee power. This does an amazing job of keeping combat fun for them, forcing them to treat it like a puzzle and prioritize different targets based on their own strengths.
Pretty much all of my statblocks are custom-made (the ones in the books tend to be both limited and really underpowered- my players just blaze right through them). My favorite statblock maker that I've used so far is Giffyglyph's Monster Maker (https://www.giffyglyph.com/monstermaker/app), it's got some cool themes and does everything I need it to without being annoying.
When I approach making an enemy, I mostly focus on the "gimmick" of said enemy and how it can play into the puzzle side of a combat. One of my best examples is a (hastily named) enemy called the Slippery Ghoul.
Tumblr media
The Slippery Ghoul's fast, and it's supposed to get in, do some damage, and get out. It's got 50 ft. of movement, but I also gave it Cunning Action, so it can dash twice (150 ft. of movement) or disengage and dash (100 ft. of movement and is able to nope out of combat basically for free). I even gave it a climbing speed so that it could scale walls and disappear in any environment, giving it crazy hit and run potential. This forces the players to ready actions, engaging with it as it returns. It's best run with a couple standard enemies mixed in, giving them a constant threat to worry about as well as forcing them to shift their priorities and balance the front line of combat with having actions ready to take out the Ghoul as it comes around.
Another example of a good "gimmick" enemy is the Cultist Handler and his puppy, the Magmahound.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Handler and the Magmahound are a duo, so where there is a Handler there is a Magmahound. These guys also travel in a group with regular Hellhounds, forming a pack that keeps the players away from the squishy Handler.
The Handler's got low health as a means of preventing it from spamming the Hounds non-stop. It's supposed to hang back, dealing damage through the Hound, its scimitar reserved for if someone gets within melee range (which usually means death anyways). Meanwhile, the Hound is very adept in spotting players and dealing some damage, working with its' allies to dish out some very consistent juicy damage. Its Burrow gives it some flexibility in who it can engage and when, allowing it to break free of engagements and slip to allies who need some help to back up their opponents. These guys like to mess up players plans, forcing them to shift around to avoid getting shredded. Just make sure they're properly backed up; if the Handler goes down, the Magmahound will attack anything, so giving the Handler some friends can help to mitigate that problem.
Alright, one more special one. This one was a boss I made who uses the Bladesinger Wizard as a base:
Tumblr media
One of my favorite ways of making a fun statblock is using player classes or subclasses a base for the statblock. The abilities are usually fairly balanced and very flavorful, though health numbers should generally be scaled up, especially with spellcaster enemies.
By this point in the campaign my players were around level 9 or 10, and this guy served as the right hand man for our big bad. He was supposed to be intimidating and really hard to deal with. He had a bunch of spells focused around an elemental/evocation theme, and he could deal a massive amount of damage while being able to stay mobile. His melee is very good as well, using the spell Shadow Blade as his main weapon. He absolutely wrecks house, with a buttload of counterspells to be a massive nuisance and a handful of teleportation spells to mix up the battlefield. His power came from the fact that he was incredibly versatile forcing the players to focus on him over any other enemy. However, his real power came from his Honor Guard reaction.
He had a few guards with him, called his Metallic Honor Guard. He could swap places with as a reaction to save himself as well as use them for protection. This is their statblock:
Tumblr media
These guys are a bunch of Constructs that would follow him around, tanking hits for him and preventing him from getting swarmed. In the final boss fight, I even had the real big bad resurrect these guys. My players loved it (I think), and it was probably one of the most fun combat sessions we've had.
(Also, yes I know there are spelling errors within the statblocks. These were originally for my eyes only, made between classes or in whatever spare time I had. That being said, feel absolutely free to run them or do whatever else you want with them).
Honestly, combat at this level can be super fun and really challenges min-maxxers to stop relying on their build to do everything by themselves. I'd recommend trying it at least once to see if your players like this style. Adios, and happy adventuring!
Also what are the names of your short stories? I wanna read em
Yeah! So, my one short story is "Sofia Serrento's Flying Circus and the Sky Pirates of Shanghai," which is published in the anthology Hell Hath No Fury: New Pulp Heroines. The other one is titled "The Godkings' Tomb," and it is published in Broadswords and Blasters Presents...Futures That Never Were. These and my standalone 5e adventure can be found linked here
