The Ficus
Currently, I have a variegated Weeping Fig, fiddle leaf fig, variegated rubber tree and what I suspect is a Ficus Aubrey though it was given to me and labeled Ficus Altisima. I can't be sure on the last ones ID until it fills in a bit more and the previous owner had chopped it back quite a bit so it only has a few leaves. Hence why I haven't bothered really taking any pictures. If you look closely in my more recent pictures, you'll probably see it. It has a ton of new growth so I'll share more about it down the road I'm sure.
All my Ficus seem to be pretty happy right now though.. For some reason ficus typically hate me lol. We'll see if now that I have some artificial lights, they do a little better. So far so good. I think I would like to buy a larger Aubrey to sit on the floor beside one of my shelves but no other specific Ficus goals right now.
My main wish list plants right now (at least the more expensive ones) are Philo Florida ghost and Thai Monstera. Now that I have my Albo, I'd love to get a Monstera with more stable variegation.
On a side note. I went to my local SharKare today to see if they had any of the things I needed to make my own potting mix and the store employees ended up asking what I needed and why. When I explained my collection/showed them some pictures and got into discussing plant care, one of the employees said I was "very knowledgeable" and asked if I wanted a job "like, right now." 🤣 I was like nahhhh, my plant knowledge only really goes as far as tropicals... Not sustainable plants. It was pretty cool though.

It’s true that the houseplant collection has been doing a lot of heavy lifting in terms of keeping me floating through all this mess. It’s also true that some have not been doing great (looking at you, mealybugs on succulents). At least my cacti don’t seem affected (yet?)
Victories lie in both jewel orchids doing quite well (both the macodes petola and the ludisia discolor, which I didn’t get a photo of to fit in here) as well as the first monstera Thai constellation leaf in my care (the cutting was a generous gift from a friend). Also the Hoya collection is growing, and the oldest plants in my collection are doing great, including the likely 10 year old Hoya compacta in the 6th photo. I remember when I bought her in 2013 for maaaaaybe $20? Damn, Hoya prices have SKYROCKETED these last two or so years. Anyway I think I’ve really latched onto hoyas as MY plants: I’ve never killed one and I’m finding success with each new one I bring in. Also THE BLOOMS.
Frank, my 8+ year old monstera, got a much needed pruning. Hopefully his pruned vines will propagate successfully and be a new plant for a friend.
Also someone stop the ficus elasticas: they are getting TOO POWERFUL. Last photo shows staghorn the third, who should have a name by now, after 3 months and 5+ new fronds. Maybe it’ll earn a name if it ever grows a basal/shield frond…
I should make a post with just my hoyas: sorry, not sorry.

Plant of the day: Monstera deliciosa ‘Thai Constellation’
This absolutely stunning aroid is my favorite plant in my collection. Its leaves are painted like a beautiful, clear night sky; hence the name. Don’t get it twisted though - the Thai Constellation is much more high-maintenance than a regular Monstera deliciosa. Due to its variegated leaves (lack of chlorophyll causes a pigment mutation), this plant is much more sensitive. Regardless, this is one of the most beautiful plants in the world!
Difficulty Level: Expert
Pet Friendly: No
Water: when the top few inches of the soil are dry, Thai Constellations can be very finicky with how they are watered so you will have to find its “sweet spot” on how moist it likes to stay in your environment
Fertilizer: once a month in spring and summer, I like this fertilizer
Soil: needs chunky, well draining soil, I like this soil mixed with a generous amount of orchid bark, horticultural charcoal, and extra perlite. A pot with drainage holes is a must!
Light: indirect, bright light. This plant is very sensitive and burns easily, do not expose it to direct sun or hot grow lights! It may take some time to figure out how to keep the white variegation from browning in your care.
Humidity: this plant likes a lot of humidity! Be careful not to mist too much as the Thai Constellation is very sensitive. Having a humidifier in the same room can benefit greatly!
Fun Fact: While the Thai Constellation is compared to the Monstera Albo a lot, they are a lot more different than meets the eye. While the Thai Con usually has cream or off-white variegation in splotches and speckles, the Albo has white variegation in larger sections; but that’s not all that’s different about them! The variegation in an Albo is naturally occurring. However, the Thai Con was actually first created in a lab via tissue culture!

This is a free coupon/excuse for you to infodump on the current topic you’re obsessed with. Take some time away from internet discourse and share with us something you find interesting. ✨
Hi Mana! 💖 Thank you for this ask haha!
I don't really know what else to talk about but one thing that makes me happy is plants, so I'm just gonna talk about plants for a bit. Nothing really specific about them though...
I think some of y'all know that I've always loved plants but over the past 3 years or so (???) my collection has grown SIGNIFICANTLY. I haven't done a head count in a while but I'd say I have around 100 plants, a lot of them have been gifts or cuttings from my mum's garden (if you think I'm obsessed with plants then you have not met my mum or seen any photos of her house). I probably got my interest in them from her 😅 so whenever I visit her for a few days at a time we always go to all the garden centres in the outer Edinburgh area.
I'm, unfortunately, having to crash at my friend's flat at the moment but hopefully I'm able to get nice new flat with my own space, which will be really nice, so one of my plant goals is to start expanding my kitchen garden. I'm currently growing lemons and calamansi, but I would also like to grow my own herbs like parsley, chives, basil, coriander etc. and also want to get a kaffir limes, tomatos and chillies! I also want to make a better set up for my carnivorous plants, like, make them some nicely decorated terrariums that will keep them nice and humid.
Some wish list plants of mine are caladiums, dragon scale alocasia, hoya compacta and, last but not least, Thai constellation monstera. Thai constellation monsteras are so highly sought after that they can cost thousands of dollars! It's crazy! They're so hard to find and a lot of people claiming to sell cuttings of them online just end up scamming you. Maybe one day...
I didn't say anything really interesting but it was nice to write some of my thoughts, so thank you! If anyone wants to see photos of my plants or general nature shots then you can see them on my Instagram which is just thecynicalartist as well! 🌱

8, 27, 29, if you want to :')
YAY! Thank you!!!!! I had SO much fun answering these! ❤️❤️❤️
8. if you were going to write a non-fiction book on any topic, what would it be?
PLANTS. Specifically on the phenomena of variegated tropical varieties: the genetic mechanism behind them, investigations into the rate of natural occurrence in the wild, best care/soil medium, how best to clone/propagate them, etc. I already talk about this to a nearly fanatical degree over on my Instagram (so many people are spending hundreds of dollars on these plants and don’t understand the basic principles behind them! I feel like it’s my duty to educate!) so I feel like a book would be the logical next step. I’ve met the person who first made the Thai Constellation monstera available commercially in the united states and know a lot of other people who have far more experience than I do, so the book would probably be more like a collection of advice from various enthusiasts sprinkled with some scientific research I conduct on my own on the side :)
Tumblr media
I actually desperately want to start a podcast called “Eclectic Eccentrics” where each week, I’d invite a new and super cool neurodivergent person in to teach me about their latest hyper fixation. I want to highlight and celebrate some of the joys of being adhd/autistic and the amazing variety of things that you can learn from it when you stop viewing it as only a negative that needs to be fixed. I’d spend the first episode talking about plants to start us off and go wherever from there!
27. your favourite flavour and brand of tea
I was actually never a big tea drinker until recently. I always have about 5 boxes of tazo Passion tea available at any given time because it is the only tea that comes in a bag that I will voluntarily make for myself. I will drink earl grey and english breakfast but only if other people are drinking it too and it would bee too much effort to make myself a separate cup. Love matcha and chai lattes though. Can’t get enough of that stuff.
29. a favourite easy recipe: 5 ingredients or less, or takes less than 30 min to make
Rich Baked Chocolate Puddings - Five ingredients if you subtract the garnish, 25 minutes of ACTIVE prep time, but it takes 40 minutes total. Obsessed with these, I make them all the time. Never actually in a jam jar though.
Eeeee, thank you so much again!!!
a soft, stay at home ask game 💕

What are your favorite online planty boy shops?
I did a post about generally all places I’d found to buy plants online which folks made some very lovely additions to. Some of those in my original post I wouldn’t necessarily recommend because there are way cheaper/better places to shop, but that was more of a “here’s what’s out there and is most popular” type post that I really need to do an updated version of someday. But anyway here are some of the places I’ve ordered from that I had a good experience with or seen people order from that I would really like to attempt to order from.
Glasshouse Works - this place has a huge selection and some very old stock plants and does not.... necessarily keep up with current trends and price markups so you can find some cool stuff here for relatively low prices (and low resolution lol). Also, their “collections” are very cool and cost effective. I have ordered twice from them, once in the spring and once in the fall and was very happy with my orders. They also regularly throw in a free “extra” if one fits in your box which is my favorite.
Steve’s Leaves - this place is a wee bit pricier than I’d like but in the end, I think it’s worth it because they ship big and healthy plants. they have a huge stock of begonias and tradescantia and peperomia, if you’re into that and their catalog changes frequently. they do a weekly email special which is fun! I’ve only ordered once from them (got my West Texas Blizzard begonia) but I see loads of people consistently having good experiences with them.
Etsy - I don’t really have a favorite specific shop but etsy is a great place to find a lot of different plants, especially cuttings. definitely look into the reviews of the shop before purchasing though.
Logee’s - tbh this place barely makes it on my list of favorites, just because I have only ordered there once and they tend to be... overpriced and overhyped for the plant you get/what they stock. but they also have a cool catalog and frequent email specials that are lots of fun to look through. I ordered my Begonia maculata wightii from them last year and have been pleased with it, though it was definitely overpriced for a plant so easy to propagate.
Arid Lands Greenhouse -disclaimer here that I have placed an order but not received it yet because I asked them to hold if they felt the weather was bad (which it has been), but they have an absolutely huge catalog of less frequently offered succulents and seem very much geared toward serious hobbyists rather than gimmicks and are very knowledgable. they’re located in arizona and grow a lot of their stuff from seed.
The People’s Plants - is one I am including here only because this is the website where I recently preordered my Thai Constellation Monstera. This is I think their second or third preorder run and I have seen several people very happy with the plants they received, so I feel comfortable linking them. They have some other cool tropicals in and out of stock from time to time it seems but I don’t know how they compare to other shops.
NSE Tropicals - is one I enjoy seeing instagram updates from but probably wouldn’t order from just because giant aroids aren’t my thing. They have some really awesome beautiful stock plants (almost nothing is in stock currently because winter).
Taylor Greenhouses - this one is similar to Glasshouse Works where it’s owned by some older folks who can barely run a web page. But does have some cool plants (especially begonias) hidden in there and free shipping on orders over $85. I’ve watched a few unboxing videos from folks and not been overly impressed by the size of the plants for the price but still a cool place to poke around.
Josh’s Frogs - I’ve never ordered plants from here (maybe ordered water plants I can’t remember) but if you’re looking for terrarium/vivarium plants and supplies, they’re a great website. They sometimes have some pretty cool plants for cheap, though they’re vivarium sized so pretty small.
PA Orchid Exchange - I have not looked too deeply into this one and haven’t seen any unboxing videos but they’re the newest plant place that’s caught me eye, especially if you’re after some Trendy Boys for what looks like relatively affordable prices?

Is there anything more beautiful than the Variegated Monstera 🤤 This beauty is a Thai Constellation. Added to my collection about a month ago. This picture was taken about a week ago & as you can just see there’s a teeeny leaf popping through 🌿 Today it is just about ready to unfurl & I am bloody excited 🙌🏼 Hallelujah ~ the plant gods are sending the love my way 🍃
💖 HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THIS BABY 💖
• Bright, Bright light baby 💡 Otherwise you will end up with a leaning Lenny & nobody likes that! I have mine sitting on a shelf next to a big North facing window. That gets sun for most of the day but he only gets sunlight through the window for a couple of hours so he never gets crispy or burns 🔥.
• Well draining, aerated soil mix! Orchid mix is best for this, with added perlite & charcoal.
• Water consistently with filtered water or rain water 💧 We don’t want those minerals in the tap water damaging our Monsteras 😢 Water around the edges of the pot ALWAYS so the base/stem of your plant isn’t left sitting in water & starts rotting. Let the soil dry out a little between watering but never ever completely. I mist unfurling leaves to help them along a little.
• Fertilising 🌱 I use Searles, Flourish ~ Green & Growth. It’s a soluble powder for foliage plants, I dilute it to half the recommenced strength and soak the soil.
It really is quite an easy job to take care of one of these babies, when it gets bigger stake it to keep it from leaning over. Wipe the leaves often to get all that dust off them ( you will be surprised how dirty the leaves can get ) And always jump with joy when a new leaf starts unfurling 🌿

When I first embarked on my houseplanting journey, I really had no idea what I liked except that I wanted something planty. So, like many others, I started with those it plants. However, as I’ve been slowing learning about plants and also about myself, I began to have a better idea of how to build a collection that has my name on it. Recently I’ve decided to part with my big Monstera babies including a Thai Constellation and it’s regular green siblings. It was a difficult decision to make and I’ve been back and forth about this so many times as they have both been my oldest plants and have been super easy to care for, but I guess it’d be better to say good bye before the joy of caring for them completely fades away so that at least now I still have some happy memories to treasure 🧡 (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1WrjQrA5zc/?igshid=89xow4zasm85
