I went with the toxic meltdown theme (as you can see with the toxic goop lol) I tried doing some kind of zombie theme too but it didn't look good so I ended up with this design. The other image just shows what they can do and their abilities :)

A creature I created for @catmask/@frogcroaks Monster Mayhem contest!

Meet the Mirage Gryphon! This trickster lives in the desert, and has the ability to create illusions! It uses this power to trick its prey by creating illusory oases, and also to prank unsuspecting travelers.

Ma monster guy lil wisp lil willow for a certain monster contest!

Willow Wisps don’t tend to be seen in their full form, since they’re usually pretty shy/spooked/wary of danger. To get rid of a potential threat, they’ll “flame on” their disguise and work together to lure the threat away from their home. When their not at home however, they’ll keep the flame on to look “scarier” to make the threat avoid them, otherwise they’ll prance away (which looks more like a bouncing flame all haha)

The common wisp live amongst willow trees, as to blend in more easily with the leaf type. But there are different kinds of wisps according to the kinds of trees they’ve evolved with (spruce wisp, oak wisp, ever wisp, maple wisp?)

They’re nocturnal, omnivores (bugs, small animals, dead stuff, leaves), and facultatively bipedal (like a parasaurolophus).

They’re light and fluffy, leaving them able to float off a surface. This also makes them prone to being blown away probably—

The fluffy stuff is fur like the mammals they are, but their bone and meat structure is probably closer to that of a bird.

They’re an older species, originating from somewhere in the dino times, but like most dino evolutions, they are tinier than they once were

An ambush like monster that buries most of itself under the warm sandy deserts. It oozes an addictive secretion which attracts prey of all kinds looking for water sources. While drunk off the substance, Fauxaven will emerge from the ground and grab its victims. Those that try to escape will be given an extra dosage of poison from its stinger [:

FOR THIS CONTEST, YOU HAVE TO DESIGN A MONSTER WITH ONE OF THESE THREE THEMES...

TOXIC MELTDOWN, WYSTERIA WILLO-WHISP, or DESERT OASIS!

SO HERE ARE THE RULES...

the piece displaying your monster design can be any art medium, though it must be your own original design, and it must show the monster's full body at least once!

designs with offensive undertones—such as racism/cultural appropriation—will not be accepted. please research your design's origin and meanings, and be respectful.

you can only submit to one theme, so there is one entry per contestant!

failure to adhere to these rules will result in disqualification.

after the event ends on the 25th of october, 3 WINNERS (one from each category) will be selected by the two judges and announced on the 31st (HALLOWEEN)!

THE PRIZES...

1st place in each category will receive - two artworks of your monster design - one by myself, and one by lemmy!

honorable mention/judges pick - lemmy and i will also select our favorite designs from each of the three categories, and do a chibi drawing of those selected winners!

Finally finished my Monster Mayhem contest submission! I figured I'd make a post here to share it with everyone ^-^ I chose the "Desert Oasis" theme!

My monster is called a "Sabroonor", a mash-up of three Michif words! I had a lot of fun designing it and figuring out how it'd fit into its environment, and I also took this as a fun opportunity (progress photo post linked) to get back into needlefelting after not doing any for a year or two!

I chose the theme Wisteria Will-O-Wisp for flower symbolism and will-o'-the-wisp folklore. Also because of the color purple ← My favourite color 💜

Posting this at a very interaction unfriendly time, but I finished my design for @catmask and @frogcroaks monster mayhem contest!!! I never get around to actually completing entries for contests im interested in, so I couldn’t be happier!!

All that said, here’s The Sandwaste Harpy! I love her a lot and prooooobably should have linked this tumblr post for my submission cause I’m about to give even more design context and such, but. Oops. 😭 I was very excited and impatient. But yeah! More info below :]

So I almost immediately knew I wanted to draw a weird half-woman siren/harpy sort of design, as that is just my guilty pleasure and comfort zone. And I really needed a comfort zone cause I am so busy with school and my hand is HURTING. Back on track though, from there I wanted to make a creature that lures weary travelers to oasis to drown and eat them

These were some of my main inspirations, some got more attention than others. The sandfish was surprisingly my biggest inspiration though, despite how things turned out. I also took some inspiration from general reptilian and more specifically snake-like features. As well as taking the idea of upper and lower body coloring from sea creatures as a means to better camouflage with the light from above or darkness from below.

I was struggling with inspiration from there though, before I saw an unrelated monster design that leaned into the more monster woman design, with many heads at the front of it’s more monster parts chest. Which inspired me to design chicks and have them latch onto the plume, akin to how mother opossums look with all their babies. It made the design go from appealing to completely endearing to me in moments.

I imagine they are also similar to opossums in many ways involving caring for their young. One thing I note is how when an opossum mothers den is unsafe, she will leave her children and return at night/when it’s quiet and try to retrieve them when it’s safe. I’ve had that happen with an opossum mom who left around 12 of her babies in my garage in a soda can box and they were all so cute and I made sure they were left alone. BACK ON TOPIC THOUGH.

I did mess around with speckling in the design, but couldn’t find a way to convey that in a way I enjoyed, hopefully the sand coloring carries this on its own. She also originally had black hair but I accidentally made her blonde and realized how much i enjoyed that in her palette anyway and how it would better camouflage too.

Camouflage is not my favorite word to spell.

But yeah otherwise this piece also acted as a means to try out a new approach to line art. No pen pressure. I realized most artists who use defined line art I enjoy, do not use pen pressure and I often don’t enjoy the looks of high pen pressure inking in my own works so why. Was I using pen pressure. I don’t know. Anyway I love how this looks and it was so easy on my pained wrists so I will have to do more of this :]!!!

First things first, this thang went through a couple concepts before I settled on this! My initial idea was some slime creature in a hazmat suit, and then a more classic T. rex skeleton covered in goo, before settling on a chameleon-and-pterosaur-inspired kaiju!

This design has a lot of elements that I love using, such as striped tails and freckles, but also a lot of things outside of my usual comfort zone (namely, the bullet-shaped head and wing hands!)

i went with the desert oasis prompt and came up with a silly bearded dragon lookin thing that keeps water on its back by mixing it with some kinda mucus . idk . fish probably end up in there every now and then
