Monster Hunter Rating 39: Silver Rathalos, the Silver Sun
I got Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin for Christmas, and that was the spark I needed to start working on these again. With how long it’s been and with how much more experience I have with the games (I hadn’t even played Rise outside the demo when writing the previous ratings, and since then I’ve beaten Magnamalo in Rise), don’t expect my opinions to necessarily stay consistent with the reviews I’ve posted thus far. Other than that, though, these’ll be more of the same reviews you saw before, so I hope you enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you didn’t think Rathalos would get a second subspecies after Rathian did, then I don’t even know what to say. I mean, that might have been a possibility if Rathalos wasn’t basically the series mascot, but we don’t live in that timeline. I’m getting off track, so let’s just move on to talking about Silver Rathalos!
Tumblr media
(How it appears in Monster Hunter Freedom 1)
Tumblr media
(How it appears in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne)
Tumblr media
(How it appears in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak)
Appearance: The problem with silver as a color is that unless you deliberately make it look metallic, it just looks like grey, and what should be flashy then becomes boring. From what I’ve seen, whether this is the case with Silver Rathalos or not depends on the game. Unfortunately, not only does it compete with Gold Rathian’s impressive appearance, it also competes with Azure Rathalos, which, in my opinion, beats it without even trying. Even the regular variety of Rathalos looks better than the silver kind unless the latter is shiny enough, so I’m going to give this a 7/10.
Behavior/Lore: Much like Gold Rathian, Silver Rathalos are the apex predators of any habitat that doesn’t have Elder Dragons in it, and even then, they’ll fight such godlike beasts without fear, and sometimes even to a draw--and that’s just when they’re fighting on their own! Silver Rathalos can call their golden mates to their side with a single roar, and the two together can send an Elder Dragon running for its life--if it hasn’t lost it, that is.
It’s not surprising that Silver Rathalos are such a threat--they’re not only stronger and more aggressive than other Rath subspecies, they’re smarter, too; they kinda have to be, considering the monsters they compete with for living space. Yet, for some reason, the Hunter’s Guild (of which region, I don’t know) looked at such a dominant beast and decided “hey, we can make a killing by making people fight these things in special events,” so they go out and capture Silver Rathalos to make Hunters fight them in an Arena. Now, all this is coming from a single sentence on the Silver Rathalos’ wiki page, so its credibility is dubious, but if it’s true. then the people who decided on this course of action are either dumb as dirt or very, very prepared for a dragonic tantrum.
Normally I wouldn’t be a big fan of a subspecies just being “the monster you know but stronger and meaner,” but the fact that Silver Rathalos can hold off Elder Dragons, the legendary Pokemon of the MH world, leaves an impression that earns it some points. The guild’s potential dragon-napping is also interesting, though I still have some doubts about it. I’m giving this category a 7/10.
Abilities: Like the Azure Rathalos, Silver Rathalos have stronger versions of the normal variety’s attacks, but their attack patterns are unique; they prefer to use their tail for grounded attacks rather than bites or tackles, but prefer to attack from the air with agility that their red and blue versions can’t match. This allows them to corner their prey/opponents very quickly before unleashing a triad of fireballs. Interestingly, they can also use an ability once thought unique to Rathans: fiery explosions--though obviously the ones created by Silver Rathalos’ are much more powerful.
Thought they are intelligent, their aggressive temperament leads them to enter a rage more often than the other varieties, but they can also go even further and enter a mode called the “incandescent state,” which is marked by even more heightened aggression in their attacks. While this should leave them more open to attacks from smart opponents, the scales on a Silver Rathalos are incredibly tough--perhaps even metallic--so they can afford to get a bit sloppy. As durable as these scales are, they ironically may be responsible for the Silver Rathalos’ one shortcoming compared to the other subspecies (at least in the earlier titles): a heightened weakness to Thunder-element attacks, especially on their wings. God help this thing if it ticks off a Rajang (which is unfortunately very easy to do, to my knowledge).
As I said with the Azure Rathalos in this department, I appreciate how Silver Rathalos’ attacks aren’t so similar to regular Rathalos’ as to be identical. Their better understanding of tactics allows them to more effectively use the tools at their disposal, and said tools were already impressive; their specialized rage state and superior defense doesn’t hurt either. 7/10.
Equipment: As you’d expect, many of the weapons made from Silver Rathalos parts also have some Gold Rathian in them. Since I’m biased, we’ll start with the Insect Glaive from MHG/U--the Blossomajesty:
Tumblr media
This makes good use of the gold and silver parts. I like how the “blunt” end of the glaive looks like a Gold Rathian’s tail, and the fact that the blade has little silver dragon wings is a cute touch to a weapon made from some of the most dangerous monsters in the series. The description reads “A legendary Fire Wyvern Insect Glaive. Fly through the air on golden wings of fire,” and with how the Insect Glaive plays, I think that tracks. Next up is another example of a gold and silver weapon, the Expert Hammer, also from MHG/U:
Tumblr media
Okay, so there’s more Gold Rathian than Silver Rathalos in this, but still. I question why the chains are there, considering the halves of the hammer are screwed into the handle and the chains don’t look like they do anything stability-wise, but the weapon overall still looks cool. Finally, it’s about time I show off a weapon made from only Silver Rathalos parts, but since I like to have at least one really weird weapon in these things, you get the Hunting Horn from Frontier. The Rathians had bells on a flute, while the Rathalos’ have:
Tumblr media
A saxophone. A freakin’ saxophone made out of the scales of the MH mascot’s ultimate incarnation (to my knowledge, anyway). It even has parts of it that are directly modeled after Silver Rathalos just to hammer that fact in. God, I love this series sometimes. Onto the armor, let’s start with the Blademaster set from Freedom Unite:
Tumblr media
It’s okay to make comparisons to Shredder, we all thought it too. These are both cool, and really let the wearer give off the powerful vibe you’d expect from someone who killed a massively powerful dragon to make them. I guess I also can’t complain about the chestpiece the woman’s wearing, since it doesn’t stick out much farther than the one the man’s wearing, so overall, these are a success. As for the Gunner set:
Tumblr media
It’s... alright, I guess. It just doesn’t look as imposing as the Blademaster set. I actually can’t think of much more to say than that. The colors remind me too much of the standard knight armor to really help here.
Admittedly, rating these all is hard. The standard and azure equipment all look cool in their own ways, and to be fair, so do these! But the colors just don’t work for me as well as the others do. I feel like I’m supposed to like the equipment more than at least the ones for normal Rathalos, but I just...don’t. It’s not bad, it’s just not as good. It still gets a 7/10.
Final Thoughts and Tally: For something that’s so much more powerful than the garden-variety Rathalos, my feelings on the Silver kind aren’t very different. I guess that’s to be expected from something so similar, but I feel like I’m wrong to not be more awed by these guys. Guess that’s an ish-me and not an issue, though; there’s nothing wrong with being a different flavor of the same cool. 7/10.
Alright, so while ago, I found a thread in FRD about this mobile dragon collecting game called Dragon's World that needs to be talked about again it's been like 3 years since it was last posted in.
The main problem this game has is literal design theft. It's not even sly about it too and it's painfully obvious.
This game stole Arcanist's design and it's hilarious.
Tumblr media
image link
The game calls it the Deja Vu ironically. All the comments on it in the fandom wiki are all just about how it's the Arcanist.
There's also another dragon called the Courtly dragon.
Tumblr media
Image link
Seem familiar to a tundra? That's because it's taken from this drawing a tumblr user posted.
Plus all the other rip-offs I managed to find, which I'll include their names in this game so you can find them in the wiki to see for yourself.
Effulgent Dragon - Potentially a rip off of FR's Guardians?
Galvanic Dragon - Potentially a rip off of FR's Coatls, but not really, has it's own differences.
Fire Lizard - Charizard (maybe Mega Y evolution?) from Pokemon
Underwater Mountain Dragon - Zinogr from Monster Hunter
Brightwing Dragon - Great Leonopteryx from Avatar (the one with the weird blue people, not ATLA, same with the next two)
Jungle Dragon - Seze the Mountain Banshee from Avatar
Blue-winged Dragon - Forest Banshee from Avatar
There's probably more that I've missed. Idk if FR knows about this, so if anybody wants to contact them through the Contact Us or something about this, go for it.
Oh i am glad you are willing to talk about monHun biology. Monster hunter stories is peculiar because due to mechanic even mammalian monster come out of the eggs, but its a good way to approach the series and get a good look at the creatures.
I am sure you have been informed of several dangerous insectivores and herbivores in this game, but did you there are also many who eat minerals? Uragaan is one of them and its dentature does look freaky when seen up close, but make lots of sense for the diet it has.
Although i am puzzled at how it can eat in the first place. Chin.
Other mineral eaters are Gravios and its juvenile form Basarios (but stories? Puts them as different monsters? So you can get a gravious straight from an egg?) But they don't seem to posses any peculiar dentature for it.
aren't there also egg-stealing quests in the main games though? do they actually restrict those to the ones that would more sensibly come from eggs??? at any rate eggs are whatever to me just 'cause that's like, the goto handwavey thing for games and stuff to do to be simple and Not Weird about reproduction. pokemon does it, flightrising does it, etc. it's not a Design Thing they put much thought or emphasis on yknow
i have not actually been informed of much! even so i would not mind being informed again lol. but yeah i heard there's geovorous[?] guys, dodogama apparently too. good for him. uruugan's teeth are hmmmm. flatt... i think there's like some kind of irl whale or ray that has Plates sorta like that but i don't remember right off. i didn't know that about gravios/basiros in stories though that's funky. i guess it falls under the same thing as getting the -drome guys direct from eggs too?? even without main-series knowledge i'm realizing stories is making a lot of.....odd choices with some stuff. anyways i'm willing to pass them off as a thing of like, they're already so huge and heavy and hard that the jaw doesn't need much additional reinforcement; its teeth looks pretty sturdily Set in there. or maybe they could just bash the rocks up with their tails idk.
I'M curious what dalamadur eats, and the wiki doesn't seem to say anythng about it. it's definitely, like A Snake, but there's no way anything that huge can reliably sustain on meat. i want 2 believe in my heart that it's a big funny worm that eats sand and shit as it burrows around, but those thin fangs would snap right off if it tried to do anything with rocks [neither are they much use for if it ate plants :pensive:]
The difference Between JRPG’s and WRPG’s, and why we should stop comparing them
If you’re like me, you love RPG’s of many different genre’s. Whether they cover fantastical realms like Skyrim and Final Fantasy, or more technologically advanced ones like Borderlands or Star Ocean.
Like all genre’s most RPG’s of different genre’s also suffer from different problems because of tropes and reused settings that people can grow tired of, but talking about RPG’s from two different parts of the world, is a whole other problem. Japan for example, is mostly marketing itself to Western players, while Western RPG’s, are mostly marketing themselves to Western players...uh wait, why does that make them different?
It’s all because of style choices. See, Japan like most countries, has a lot of traditions that make a lot of it’s products fairly same-y. As I said that happens with everyone, but Japan has to try harder with smaller series to get western appeal, which is required to have a successful selling game, unless it’s a mobile title, since those all do really well in Japan, because people can just game on their way to and from work. I digress, but Japan is so rooted in tradition, that you can watch an episode of Gigantor, the anime that is considered by many to be the first anime ever created, and Demon Slayer, and notice a lot of similarities in the way the characters are speaking, because Japan has always made their shows where actors talk like they would in real life, which isn’t always true in other acting platforms around the world, which of course means, this translates to video games.
Specifically what it means, is that Japan has to hop a cultural barrier that Western games don’t, and they have to rely on a lot more tropes, because there are only so many ways to translate the same basic plot of a JRPG, for Western audiences, before things become too cliché. A lot of RPG’s are successful in doing this, like the aforementioned Final Fantasy, and other JRPG’s are coming through with successful games to, like Fire Emblem. Persona and Shin Megami Tensei, Atelier, and several others. All of the games coming through lately, lead people to believe that JRPG’s are a thriving genre in the west, but that’s not really true.
If you were to ask any random person what the most successful JRPG of all time was, a lot of people would probably think of a Final Fantasy game, but not even Final Fantasy 7, has come close. In fact the only JRPG that even made it to the top 10 best selling games ever, is Pokemon Red/Blue/Green/Yellow as a collective, with four different versions. The next best selling one is Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal, and in fact, only 11 of the top 49 best selling games of all time, are RPG’s, and all of the JRPG’s are Pokemon titles. Final Fantasy 7 has still been wildly successful, as the original has sold over 11.8 million units, and the remake over 5 million, but the fact of the matter is, that even though RPG’s as a whole are the biggest genre of the top 49, the few that made it are exceptions to the rules. In fact, of the top 10 best selling games of all time, 6 of them are by Nintendo. The other 5 excluding Pokemon, are Wii Sports, Super Mario Bros. Mario Kart 8/Deluxe, Wii Fit/Plus and the original Gameboy version of Tetris, which itself is on there twice because EA’s version is number 3. so you’re actually better off in Japan, not making a JRPG.
There’s a lot more that can be gleamed from looking at the list, so you can check it out here if you want: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games
The point is that JRPG’s, aren’t always as successful as people think they are. I mean sure, you don’t have to be on the top best selling games list to be successful, but Persona 4 Golden on PC is considered a massive success for selling only just over a million units since it’s release, and the Tales of Series, which is one of the longest running in gaming, as recently as April of this year, had it’s sales numbers made public, and Tales of Symphonia, the undeniable Final Fantasy 7 of the series, sold a total of 940,000 units in the United States, and the game, easily the most successful title from Tales of, only managed 2.4 million in total. None of this is to say, that JRPG’s are struggling, because most of the ones I brought up are shining examples that they aren’t, but going back to that top 10 list, Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V,  just the top two of that list, have sold 345,000,000 total units. That not only beats the entire mainline series of Pokemon, it’s only about 2.5 million short extra, of beating the original 151′s total sales, with how many spare units the two games over Pokemon’s  300,000,000 million total sales mainline games, which means likely, the two of them will beat the series out at some point in the future.
Western RPG’s, don’t often suffer from as many problems, because they don’t have a border to hop, and it shows with Elder Scrolls, which has sold 58 million total copies with only five mainline games, and 30 million of those came from Skyrim alone. It took Pokemon, the undisputed champion of JRPG sales, 20 mainline games to reach 300 million, which means arguably, by the time Elder Scrolls reaches it’s 10th installment, it will have caught up to Pokemon’s first 20 games total sales. Borderlands, which is arguably the Tales of to Western RPG’s in most people’s eyes, has actually outsold Elder Scrolls with only 4 mainline entries, one of which is considered bad by many, with a total of 60 million total units sold. The better comparison, surprising for many I’m sure, for a Tales of comparison, is actually Fallout, which has sold 13.51 million units, to Tales of 23.5 million units.
Enough about numbers for a few minutes, 3 paragraphs about it is a bit much, but the fact of the matter is, Japan struggles more overall to make successful RPG’s in the West, than the West does in the West, and it’s all due to how much of a challenge it is to hop that border.
Outside of sales numbers, the other major difference between JRPG’s vs Western RPG’s is how they are classified. Generally, when someone thinks of a JRPG, they think of a fantasy world, with leveling, where rare items can be won off bosses, but your main way of improving stats is to level up, and have enough money to buy the best equipment at each new town you enter with a shop. However, a lot of games have been getting that label slapped on them by their marketing teams or fans, and some of it is just wrong. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one such game, despite the drops from enemies being the only correlation between BoTW and JRPG’s. The correlation was made by fans, which might seem like an innocent mistakes, and in fact could be nothing but that, but then there’s Monster Hunter, which actually does have two JRPG’s attached to it, in the Stories 1 and 2 games, but who took the reigns of JRPG to market, calling Monster Hunter World, a JRPG. despite it having few differences from other Monster Hunter action games, outside of having a story, and having nothing more to do with JRPG’s than Zelda. A lot of fans of Japanese games will classify simply playing as a fake character an RPG, which normally would be fine, but in games, that’s not how genres are defined. If that were the case, all of Yakuza’s games would be JRPG’s, instead of just Like a Dragon, and in fact most games would be RPG’s, and they obviously aren’t. Bubsy 3D RPG anyone? No? Ya sure? Yeah I didn’t think so.
The west has the exact opposite problem of under classifying it’s games as RPGs. While sure, you wouldn’t call Halo an RPG, unless you know, Master Chief was shooting an RPG, you absolutely should call Ratchet and Clank one. Think about it, your main playable characters all have HP, most of them have weapons that can level up, and the action setting of these games, basically should make Ratchet, a response to Level 5′s Dark Cloud series, which did all the same things for combat. However, it’s just seen as series of action games, despite it also being a lot like Borderlands.
The point is, there are a lot of things that differ JRPG’s and WRPG’s from sales, to marketing, to style and so many other factors, I would run out of characters available to me, before I get through them all. There’s nothing wrong with these genre’s being different, but people classifying them as similar, could harm either since they don’t often jell that well together. So please, think before you compare, and for those rare RPG’s, where you can’t tell the difference, makes sure you find out where they were developed, because a lot of games you might think are JRPG’s, could in fact be Korean or Chinese.
WW - S06 E04 Weekend At Bobby's 😘
(Weird Wednesdays are brought to by bastardizing the wiki)
One year ago and shortly after trapping Lucifer and Michael in Lucifer's Cage, Bobby summons Crowley and demands the return of his soul. Crowley refuses and smugly quotes his contract, which states that he only has to "make best efforts" to give Bobby his soul back. He agrees to give Bobby ten years of life, but that is all. Bobby then reveals he has trapped Crowley in a devil's trap made with black light paint, but Crowley threatens him with his hellhound until Bobby releases him.
Bobby’s junkyard dog, Rumsfeld, who everyone forgot about, perks up at the sound of a new friend and Crowley relents and summons Juliet for a playdate. The dogs run the perimeter of the salvage yard and the owner’s discuss training and stories of when they were pups. Bobby brings out some glasses and Crowley falls for the holy water in his scotch. Eventually, they laugh it off.
In the present day, Sam and Dean are in Wisconsin (namely Kenosha, where my husband was born) on the trail of a monster that cracks open the bodies of its victims. It leaves a large black claw in the chest cavity of the latest victim, and they call Bobby for help. Even though Bobby says that he's busy. And Sam always has wifi. Bobby steps up and spends hours researching, going so far as to break into a University library to find a book that he needs. I mean, they’re his kids, who else would he go to jail for?
And we wonder why he was the one with all the drunk and disorderlies...
It's early morning the next day when he calls Dean to tell him that they're hunting a lamia. Usually only in Greece, a lamia "juices hearts and chugs the blood." Which Sam quickly jots down, because that could be the next step in his smoothie fixation. Bobby tells them it can be killed by a silver knife blessed by a priest. What kind of priest? Who knows, who cares. Probably an acolyte of Apollo or some shit. But, they can do their own research now, moochers.
After he's off the phone, Bobby goes down to his basement, where he has a crossroads demon tied up and caught in a devil's trap. He wants to know Crowley's true name - the name he had as a human before he died and became a demon in Hell - so he tortures the demon by using a blowtorch to singe its bones. Finally, she admits that Crowley, who is now the King of Hell, was a Scottish man named Fergus MacLeod in life. The other demons call him "Lucky the Leprechaun" behind his back.
Which just goes to prove that demons are stupid and unofficially most Scots and Irish end up in heaven, because there is no way it was that funny of a joke.
Once Bobby has the information he needs, he burns the demon's bones, killing it and its host. And no one is really surprised, we are only allowed to worry about vessels when it’s a recurring character.
After killing the demon, Bobby answers phones and backs up other hunters posing as various law enforcement officials until Rufus knocks on his door. Rufus has the police on his tail and needs Bobby's help burying the body of a Snorlax, a monster usually only seen in Japan. They bury the body on Bobby's property and Rufus leaves just before Sheriff Jody Mills shows up with an FBI agent, Agent Adams. Agent Adams is looking for Rufus.
And as exhausting as this episode is, it just shows what Bobby Singer’s life really is like. It wasn’t a single week of annoyance, it was always like that. He’s a goddamn saint in a cantankerous facade. Bobby is a fucking hero.
Dean calls while the FBI agent is there and asks for help killing the lamia because they couldn't kill it with a silver knife blessed by a priest. Bobby tells him to find salt and rosemary and "blend the herbs, saute over a high heat, and cook well," and hangs up when Dean finishes his audition for Cutthroat Kitchen and flambes the lamia. Agent Adams is persistent, and Sheriff Jody Mills tries to distract him, but Adams finds the spot where the Snorlax was buried. Fortunately, there is no longer any evidence of a crime because the damn thing is gone. Unfortunately, Rufus didn't stab it enough times to kill it, and it has been feeding on single white gamers while they sleep.
Rufus and Bobby deserved a fucking spin off for this episode alone. Jesus these two were perfect.
While Bobby was interrogating the crossroads demon, Marcy Ward rang his doorbell with a homemade peach cobbler. She has been his neighbor for six months now, and seems to be interested in him romantically, asking him over for dinner and a movie and then, when he seemed hesitant, asking him to come over and take a look at her wood chipper, which has broken down. When he learns that the Snorlax might be after her, he breaks down her door with a shotgun, scaring her, but drawing out the Snorlax, which had been waiting in her bedroom to kill her. Her playstation still paused to the final boss.
When the Snorlax is killed in Marcy's (obviously functioning) wood chipper, she is covered in blood. Bobby still tries to salvage a relationship with her, but she turns him down. He never was as cavalier as he wanted to be and victims are rarely as grateful as they are in fanfic.
Rufus thanks Bobby for helping him with the pokemon, and tells him what his contacts in Scotland have learned about Fergus MacLeod, aka Crowley. Crowley had a son named Gavin MacLeod, whose signet ring is now on display in a maritime museum in Andover, Massachusetts. Rufus is already there willing to steal the ring for Bobby. Because, that’s what friends do. And no matter how annoying or argumentative they are, both of those ornery bastards listen when the other is talking or dealing with their own problems.
Dean calls to talk about Sam and how he's changed in the past year, Dean can’t stand his new manscaping regimen especially, but when Bobby puts Dean on hold to talk to Rufus (who is fleeing law enforcement after stealing the ring), Dean accuses him of being selfish.
I have seen people go off on Bobby for this rant and I just want you all to know, FUCK OFF. Bobby had every right to say what he did in this episode. We all knew Sam was “WRONG”, Dean should have picked a different way to unload on Bobby about it.
Bobby asks for Sam and he yells at the brothers over speakerphone, calling them "whiny, self-absorbed, sons-of-bitches" that he does everything for without a word of thanks. He reminds them Crowley still has his soul and tells them to "sack up" and help him for once. Sam says all Bobby had to do was ask. While Dean pouts in the corner because he didn’t want to talk TO SAM about SAM. He wanted to gossip.
As a favor to Bobby, Sheriff Mills extradites Rufus and allows him to "escape custody" so that Rufus can deliver the signet ring to Bobby. You just gonna gloss over how he got it to South Dakota safely? Really? That level of dedication is just overlooked these days.
Bobby uses the ring to summon Gavin's ghost, and they "have a chat." He then summons Crowley, who arrives and discovers he is trapped in another devil's trap. Which, why isn’t he always at this point? Summon him constantly gents, it’s like a round of musical Crowley. No? Too much? Eh, what do you know.
Crowley repeats his position that he won't give Bobby his soul, but Bobby counters by revealing his son Gavin's ghost. Fergus, aka Crowley, and Gavin hated each other so Gavin is useless as a bargaining chip, but he gave Bobby all the information he wanted about Crowley, including where his bowling shoes were buried. Which I don’t think Gavin would have known, but that’s just more confusing shit for a later episode where we time travel to find the real Gavin and not just a bitter old spirit.
Bobby hands Crowley the phone so that he can talk to Dean, who tells him that he and Sam are standing over Crowley's comical size sevens in Scotland. Bobby makes Crowley an offer: his beloved shoes in exchange for Bobby's soul, and Crowley agrees. Bobby makes sure that he will still have the use of his legs before releasing him from the devil's trap, with a pat on the ass for good measure.
Crowley appears in Scotland moments later, where Sam and Dean are still standing over his supposed grave. Dean threatens to burn the lucky bowling shoes anyway, but Sam tells him to stand down, saying "a deal's a deal." Crowley picks up his personalized bag and disappears, and Bobby thanks Sam and Dean for flying to Scotland and helping him get his soul back.
Dean was on a plane for 8 hours? Sam must have given him that good shit, because aint no other way that was happening....
Pokémon Crash, Beetles & Fox Movies
Hello and welcome to another illuminating episode of fun and frivolity with those goofballs from Nerds Amalgamated. First up we have a story about how Nintendo are crashing Roku devices. That’s right, Nintendo have an issue with Pokémon Sword and Shield that is causing Roku to crash and shut down. Now if you want to know more you will need to listen in and then you can tell us what you think in our Facebook group if you think Buck is being to grumpy.
Next up we have the start of Jurassic Park with a beetle trapped in amber. That’s right, a real beetle trapped in amber. This one in particular is historical due to a few important factors, such as the age of the beetle. Would you believe it was around almost 100 million years ago? That’s right and it played an important part in the local ecology. Want to know how the listen in for our second story and then tell us what was your favourite part of the Jurassic Park movies?
Last up we have those poor people at Disney having to vault movies to try and increase the value and increase the margins. That’s right, since Disney the evil organization seeing world domination have bought Fox media they have begun to reduce access to Fox movies to create a false scarcity. This is only one of the underhanded things that they are doing, if you want to know more you know what to do. Also let us know what you think about these dirty tricks by Disney in our group.
Shoutouts
16 Nov 1902 - Brooklyn toymaker Morris Michtom named the teddy bear after US President Teddy Roosevelt. It was named in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt, after he refused to shoot a bear during a Mississippi hunting trip in November 1902. During the trip, guides clubbed a bear and tied it to a tree then invited the president to shoot it; instead, Roosevelt, an avid outdoorsman and hunter, declined, saying it would be unsportsmanlike to kill a defenseless animal that way. - https://www.nps.gov/thrb/learn/historyculture/storyofteddybear.htm
18 Nov 1926 - Writer and playwright George Bernard Shaw refused to accept money from the Nobel Prize. Shaw initially wanted to refuse the Nobel Prize in general, in line with his principle of not receiving public recognition, but his wife convinced him to receive the award. - https://history.info/on-this-day/1926-why-did-george-bernard-shaw-refuse-the-money-from-the-nobel-prize/
20 Nov 2019 - Dr Karl Kruszelnicki is being awarded the 2019 UNESCO Kalinga Prize for the Popularisation of Science. Dr Karl is the first Australian to win the prize, which he received in recognition of his "longstanding commitment to fire up people's curiosity for science and share his passion for the subject". He prides himself on being able to explain in minutes concepts or ideas that take him hours to research and understand. - https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2019-11-20/dr-karl-kruszelnicki-unesco-award-science-communication/11717044
Young and the other members of AC/DC were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. Malcolm was described as the driving force and the leader of the band. In 2014, he stated that despite his retirement from the band, AC/DC was determined to continue making music with his blessing. As the rhythm guitarist, he was responsible for the broad sweep of the band's sound, developing many of their guitar riffs and co-writing the band's material with Angus. Wolf’s Fantasy Notes: D&D Fantasy
Hello all! I am here with my final post: Dungeons and Dragons (DnD)! So, I am not going to delve too deeply into this one. I could do daily posts for months on the different aspects of DnD’s world and mythos alone! So instead I am going to talk about what DnD can offer you as a writer and provide some resources. The reason I won’t talk about stories running on pure DnD background is because I am assuming that anyone who has decided to write one has a good working knowledge of it. But, for curious new folks I will give a quick overview.
So what is it?
Dungeons and Dragons is a fantasy Tabletop Roleplaying Game that was started in 1972 in the basement of two friends. Over the years, it has grown into a cultural phenomenon that has influenced the way fantasy has looked going forward.
The most basic premise to a game of Dungeons and Dragons is usually a group of adventurers go on either a quest or treasure hunting in elaborate dungeons or worlds that are full of traps and monsters. The dungeon crawling came first, hence the name. Over the years, however, the world and mythos has evolved to include questing and story driven campaigns in addition to pre-made and custom dungeon crawling sessions.
The players are allowed to build their characters from classes of characters with different skill sets and characteristics, along with different races.
So… how can it help you?
It can help on the big levels and small levels!
1: Worldbuilding
Not every writer is a JK Rowling or JRR Tolkein or George RR Martin… worldbuilding takes time and effort!
DnD has tomes full of myths, histories, languages, races, religions and other world tibits for you to sample and make use of! There are several websites and even youtube videos devoted to all of that!
2: Classes and Races
Classes are great for designing your characters around. There are easily accessible tables and breakdowns of classes for you to make use of! Reddit has many!
I know this from personal experience! In a Kingdom Hearts fic I am writing, I used DnD classes to design my characters’ fighting styles around. This gave me plenty more options for movement and power in fight scenes and individuating each character from one another… even if they had similar weapons like Keyblades!
And it doesn’t even have to be related to fighting! Classes come with built in behaviors that are necessary for things to work.
For example:
A ranger is likely to have studied archery and they tend to be a dexterity class because of that. They may be a hunter which brings additional skills for things like scavenging and cooking.
While a wizard would be able to cast magic they have to be well read, given they study magic and gain their skills that way. So your wizard may have come from a richer area to have access to arcane tomes or maybe they were from a family of wizards? Or perhaps they found a tome by accident and are looking for more?
Each class has something unique to add! If you add a race to it, the opportunities practically double!
Races in DnD come with their own drawbacks and advantages! They also come with their own baggage conflicts or backstories due to them!
Fairies, for example, can charm people, but are immune to being charmed or persuaded. However, they are tiny and don’t handle weapons well!
Tieflings are half-demonic creatures that were born of peoples that bargained with dark beings for power. So they are able to read daemonic languages and have some resistance to certain types of attacks. But they often have chips on their shoulders because of people’s wariness and dislike of them.
Also, examples of names are also found with Race descriptions so you can use them for OCs or aliases for your characters!
3: Magic and Curses
This goes without saying! There are entire books devoted to the magic and curses that are found in the DnD realms! You can browse them for ideas on attacks and curses! Most magic is tied to something whether nature or a god or elves or fairies or Patrons, powerful beings that grant power in exchange for service!
4: Campaigns
There are plenty of pre-made campaigns that people can use to play a quick game or design their own thing around! These can be great starting points for the author that has a vague idea of characters and what they want them to do but are stumped on how to go about it!
5: Homebrews
Homebrew is a term meaning made from scratch information for a game. Usually they have their own rules, races, classes, and even mythologies!
Another game I play is literally a homebrew Pokemon Tabletop RPG. It has its own rules, classes and everything!
DnD has entire websites devoted to these! People create races, attacks, branches of magic, and mythologies! If you want something specific you could probably find it after a quick Google search.
For example, one of my characters will be a Concubus! A half demon born of a Incubus/Sucubus union with a human! This is a homebrew race with an interesting skill set!
I found a blood based transfer spell too that I plan to tweak for a plot point!
All in All, DnD is a great place to search for inspiration whether you want your story to take place there or not!
I recommend Dnd Beyond and DnD wiki for information!
D&DBeyond is an official site that hosts some basic info for folks to use and homebrew stuff too! There is a paywall. Basic info under the rules tables is free as is the homebrew. The detailed stuff is behind a paywall!
DnD wiki is a fan run encyclopedia that house a bunch of homebrew and more detailed info on the basics without the pay wall!
Just searching for things in Google or YouTube can bring up a ton of videos and other information! Don’t be afraid to use them!
I am happy that you all liked these little posts! A master list will be posted soon! Have any other questions about fantasy or something you would like me to answer about writing in general? Hit me up in my ask box here!
May the magic be with you and fare thee well on your writing journeys!
Switching Gears: 2017 and Why Video Games Worry People
Tumblr media
My oldest son the first time he turned on Mario by himself.
Nintendo games have been a part of my life for most of what I remember of it. One of the first things I remember is playing Super Mario Brothers with my dad.  I had to have been ...3? 4 at the oldest?  I jokingly told a friend while we were discussing our most impactful Christmas & Birthday presents that the introduction of the NES altered the trajectory of my life forever from that point forward, but that isn't a joke.
There are people that contend that games rot your mind.  This isn't true for me, and wasn't true for my friends growing up.  I was friends with "the smart kids" all through my school years.  I identified as "smart." My friends and I all played games to some extent.  I admit that my desire and capacity to obtain and consume new games far outstripped many of my peers.
Nintendo's presentation of its new console, the Switch, has me at a crossroads. For the first time I've found myself considering the implications of continuing down the road I've been on literally as long as I can remember.  It's not the quality of Nintendo's offering that has me thinking, but the stage of life I currently find myself occupying.
Video games have changed a lot since the 80's.  Big budget AAA games have become an arms race of who can push the envelope even closer to photo-realism in both appearance and in actual interactions between the player and the game world.  Games exist today that surpass 8-year-old  Bill's wildest dreams. But instead of being filled with wonder, there is an undercurrent of obligation.
When I was 14 years old, a game that boasted hundreds of hours of gameplay would have blown me away.  I would scramble to get a copy and play blissfully for hours and hours.  And such a game would be rare.  Today games are designed to be services that last as long as you are interested in them.  Games like World of Warcraft, Destiny, Monster Hunter, Call of Duty, mobile Skinner-box style games, and even evolutions of old games like the latest Pokemon have systems in place to keep you coming back to that specific game.  Player retention is a huge metric.  While I may have played the games of my teenage years multiple times, it felt like re-reading a favorite book, or re-watching a favorite movie.  Games today are more like years long spanning soap operas that give you just enough progress in each play session to keep you coming back again day after day after day.
Developers are getting really good at making you want to stick around! There's so much to fuss over that if I am really into an addicting game, I find myself thinking about it in the shower, sneaking some time searching a wiki or FAQ between meetings, and spending time away from the game planning what I want to do during my next play session.  I used to think of this as a great feature of modern games.  Today, one game  can be so complicated that you could spend literally hundreds of hours on a single purchase.  There was so much to do and think about that I didn't need to buy new games as often, generally spent less money on other forms of entertainment, and often could put the console to play these games (3DS, phone) in my bag and take it wherever I want to go.
Catching Pokemon with my daughter the day of the Pokemon Go launch
Then I started growing my family.  Adopting my daughter when she was nine years old didn't do much to change my habits, and we often played games together.  She could already make her own cereal and knew not to stick her finger in an electrical outlet.  Adding two more boys to the mix really put some things in perspective that I didn't understand when I was a kid.
I have a handful of personal goals that I want to achieve sometime in my life.  Some of them are far off dreams, but require daily practice to manifest anything worthwhile.  Sometimes it is studying Japanese.  Lately, it has been reconnecting with drawing and art.  Every piece of advice I read on how to improve is to prioritize daily practice and keep pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.
Once you have a handful of kids, your days get pretty crazy.  After volleyball, music class, dinner, bath time, and story time, bed time, you're left with 1-2 hours a day of personal time to accomplish everything you must and want to accomplish.   After cleaning up the messes of the toddlers (and the now teenagers), you're usually talking an hour tops.
So how do you spend that hour?  Obviously you could play games, and that hour would go by really fast.  But what about that nagging voice that says "hey, didn't you want to put out another comic?" or "how long has it been since you studied new Kanji?"  This feeling shows up in quiet moments alone: the shower, long drives, standing in line, or waiting to fall asleep. I've found that you can ignore the voice for awhile with new games or tv shows, but eventually the gentle reminder becomes a deafening chorus.  Cynicism seeps into your entire outlook and makes everything you do feel like a futile, pointless waste of hours you will never get back. When I get bored of a super complicated game, I start to beat myself up for obsessing over something “trivial” and ignoring all the other development I said I wanted to pursue.
Tumblr media
My youngest son rocking the PS4 gear
Now, let me go on record: games are not “bad.”  I love games.  I will never stop playing games. But I recognize that when I am actively playing games, my brain focuses on every minute detail of every system to crowd out the unease I feel about not making progress towards dreams I've had my whole life.  Having kids wakes you up to the fact that "the rest of your life" is finite and very short. My youngest is one, and he was only a little new born baby for the first few months of his existence.  He's already starting to piece a few words together.  In a few months he will be more himself, more independent, and that 1-year-old toddler will never be the same again.  Today matters.  And if enough todays go by without change you will continue on the same path "for the rest of your life."
I love my family and want to be an active part of it, but I still have my own personal ambitions.  That means, if they’re awake, I try not play games unless they're playing too.  It also means that  if I want to continue to grow my personal dreams and ambitions outside of family, I have to do it when they're asleep, while also getting enough rest myself that I don't get fired at work.  I'm starting to wrap my head around the idea that, in the long term, I beat myself up less if I use that spare hour every day towards my dreams and ambitions instead of retrieving magical rocks for characters inside computer simulations.
All that said, I pre-ordered a Switch because I know that my kids and I are going to have a blast with Super Mario Odyssey, or 1-2-Switch, or, when they're old enough, Zelda.  Just like playing with my dad in the late 80’s/early 90’s, Nintendo time is family time.  But I have become increasingly critical of purchasing new games that only I will play.  It's not that games are a waste of time, it's that if I ever want to create the things I've told myself I will make time for someday, someday must be today, or it will never happen.  The last year slipped through my fingers faster than I ever thought possible.  I vividly remember moments from 18 months ago that feel like yesterday.  Playing games by myself in my free time accelerates the pace of time slipping by.  If I don't use my time now, today, in a way that directs me towards the future I want, it will never happen.  In 2017, my goal is to slowly course correct the ship that is my career, goals, and ambitions, even if it’s only an hour at a time.
