Dex has many titles in the Haus; mechanic, plumber, runner up in the Mario Kart debacle of 2016, Eric Bittle’s baking protege and the unlikeliest friend Nursey ever expected to find at Samwell. Nursey never expected to add ‘resident ghost whisperer’ to the list.

Derek remembers the first time he visited the Haus and the full body shiver that came with it. The paint was - and still is - curling off the walls, colours peeling away from each other to reveal the pockmarked brick underneath. The sagging porch roof gave the idea of despairing brows, decorated obnoxiously with a sun lounger and a duckling pool floatie that has long since disappeared. If he were back in New York, he would have crossed to the other side of the street and went on his way without a second glance. He even remembers the photo he sent to his family group chat with the text, ‘can’t wait to move in :)’ and the ensuing uproar on both of his moms parts. It's been two years and he thinks fondly of bumping into every corner, drunken nights spent on questionable floors and days spent in the living room. Every room feels like a blanket that he's never learned to settle under, because the Haus changes every year, whether its appearance or occupants. Nurse only feels he’s beginning to learn this now, halfway through October of junior year and wishes he could escape the churning of time. Instead, he focuses on the residual fondness as he and Chow walk back from classes, each holding a cup of Annie’s coffee and him holding a third.

“Hey, remember when we first saw the Haus? What did you think?” He asks.

“Haunted,” Chowder immediately responds, “Have you ever watched Monster House? I thought every house on the east coast was like that for years.”

Nursey nods, grinning widely. “Great fucking movie-” He’s cut off when Chowder kicks at him and he narrowly avoids a stumble, throwing a glare, “Dude. Not with the coffees.”

“That shit gave me nightmares for weeks as a kid,” Chowder scolds him, a pinch between his brow that deepens when Nursey laughs and he hikes his backpack higher, clearly affronted. “Not like the Haus isn’t haunted anyway, so I wasn’t even wrong.”

“Chow, I’m gonna question our friendship if you actually put some faith in Rans & Holster’s ghost stories.”

“Look I swear-”

“No. Don’t say another word or I'll sic Dex on you. You know how he is with this shit.” 

“He’s not superstitious,” Chow ignores Nursey’s chants calling bullshit remarkably well and continues, “But he definitely believes the Haus is haunted.”

i guess it'd be hard for a yokai romance a human w/o keeping their real species a secret. can yokai and humans naturally interbreed?

I'm assuming there was some Yokai who got up and screamed "LEAVE LOU JITSU ALOOOOONE" in the middle of a town square at some point. There were probably tons of weird assumptions and conspiracy theories, and everyone debated on whether he was there willingly or if they should call the human president. "Of course he doesn't want to be there, he's a human fighting monsters six times his size!" "He loves that shit though, haven't you seen his human movies? He's constantly fighting stuff!" "Uh, you know humans don't like...actually hit each other in their movies, right?" "...For real?" "Yeah, they pull their punches and edit it to make it look like they did." "...Oh." "Did...did you think he actually killed those guys in Punch Chowder?"

I don't think it's that weird, just considering the sheer variety of Yokai appearances and body types. Not to mention there's plenty of human-shaped Yokai, those would be seen as more akin to Neanderthals to their Homo Sapiens in that they're not exactly like them, but close enough. (oh, for people not in the know-we fucked the Neanderthals out of existence. They didn't go extinct so much as they bred with us so much that there were eventually no pure Neanderthals left. We found them extremely hot and just kept fucking them. A lot of people today, primarily Europeans, have trace amounts of Neanderthal DNA)

The bigger issue would be the lifespans. Humans on average live like 70-80 years. Yokai can easily live to be a thousand. And Yokai ages are socialized very differently. A hundred-year-old Yokai is still very young, basically just crossing the threshold into true adulthood. A hundred-year-old human is evading the reaper. So this means that for a Yokai to meet and settle down with a human that's not a fraction of their age, they would have to do it in their young adult years-and most of them aren't doing that, because Yokai aren't pressured to get married and have kids young the same way humans are.

Like. I don't have a concrete age for Draxum, but I've been assuming he's 600-800 years old. His sister was the same age. Her husband was in his forties when Bella was born forty-five years ago.

It works because like-mentally and socially, the Draxum sibs were the equivalent of 50 or so in Yokai years, but that's still a lot of years and experience she had on him.

Plus then even if you find someone and you're able to get over the age gap-you have, what, fifty years with them? At most?

There are laws in the Hidden City that allow humans to be mutated legally, and as the spouse of a Yokai Draxum's brother-in-law would have been pretty much automatically approved. And he had applied, but the paperwork takes a few years to push through. And unfortunately we know what happened before that.

At least in my canon, Yokai and humans aren't reproductively compatible. Splinter actually got a vasectomy when he was young (generational trauma+Hollywood manwhore lifestyle, he did not want any surprises) and Big Mama just let him do that without telling him that he couldn't get her pregnant. Because she's an asshole like that. Bella and Pax are technically half-human and half-Yokai, though in practice they're really just Yokai with more obvious human characteristics, and Draxum had to make them by basically doing IVF and combining it with his ooze nonsense. And Pax has a lot of health issues stemming from his origins and unhealthy genes, which is the reason he still lives in a house owned by Draxum and does odd jobs for his uncle instead of working. The procedure was technically successful but it was deemed too costly and unreliable to serve as a solution to the Yokai's issue of an imminent genetic diversity crisis. Especially since the children it produced were sterile themselves.

propaganda: The movie she comes from is good and underrated, but a can’t help but feel a bit annoyed of the main character ("DJ" Walterson) and his friend (Chowder) straight-up simping over her throughout the movie. And her feelings towards both of them honestly kind of felt like they were forced or came out of nowhere in the movie. Like, I get it. They’re all young teenagers (DJ is 12 and Chowder is 13; Jenny is 13), and I know it’s possibly a trope that occurred at the time the movie was made, but I can’t help but be a bit irritated by it regardless. I like the idea of Jenny being “into” both of them because she likes the IDEA of being into and/or in love with them, and then she grows up later and finds out that she’s actually likes girls instead. Idk lol.

What are your Dalv and Anyone Other Than Starlo dynamic headcanons

OK SO!!!!! DALV FRIENDSHIPS…… what a world it would be if I had two whole friends……….. so criminally underrepresented in this fanbase but I guess I have to be the change I want to see in the world..

So in marts case, I like to think they hang out the most given their close distance. It’s good to have someone much more outgoing than him to assist with his reintegration into monster society; she helps him reintroduce himself to the locals and gets his name out there, like by hanging up posters for his organ concerts all around snowdin and such. They’re both creatives at heart too, I think they’d always talk about and share progress on their projects with each other. Mart helps fill up his new house with little wooden trinkets she made (maybe even bigger stuff like furniture… it would be a nice way to show how much she’s learnt and improved since becoming chujins apprentice all those years ago) and Dalv returns the gesture by showing her early drafts of his books and organ performances. They also would probably talk about clover a lot, too. Starlo and Ceroba have each other, but neither martlet nor dalv were already close to anyone else Clover bonded with. Definitely a lot of reminiscing on how they changed both of their lives for the better. There’s maybe even some shared feelings of guilt from both of them, that they let this human who affected them so deeply sacrifice themself for the good of their people… Maybe they use their combined creative talents to create another little memorial for them…

And ceroba aughhhhhh dalv and ceroba. Do you ever think about how similar they are. They’ve both dealt with an absurd amount of trauma and regret, and perhaps not dealing with it in the best way for a long time. They would be able to connect with each other through that, I think. Knowing what it’s like to be trapped in that spiral of depression, isolating themselves from those who try to reach out to them and lashing out at clover in the hopes that it would fix their problems. They’d also enjoy hanging out in general, of course. Ceroba “they’re a bit too rowdy for my tastes” and Dalv “wants to be left alone” would appreciate each others more relaxed company on occasion. Ceroba brings him corn in the credits, I like to think it’s a weekly thing of sorts. She takes it from the weekly markets and then they share a nice dinner using it as the main ingredient. Maybe she shares the corn chowder recipe she used to make for her family? Dalv is still used to literally only eating corn that it’s nice to have a little more variety, even if it’s still just corn in some way. Oh and of course ceroba is the one who finally lets dalv know what happened to his friend. Why they stopped leaving corn at his door. There were a lot of tears that day, but it was definitely good for both of them: ceroba telling the truth to people after hiding it all for so long, and dalv finally getting closure, knowing why his friend never returned, but perhaps he will still be able to see her again one day…
