That next morning, I woke up with a knife two inches from my face, where I dropped it. Nothing had changed. After patrolling the house, I was still alone, and beginning to learn my way around. There was what felt like a black hole in my stomach, I hadn’t eaten in at least 24 hours, probably more. It was time to suck it up and venture into the food that was in the fridge.

“I mean, it must be safe to say the food is clean.” I can’t wait to be with you, replayed in my head. “Then I’d have to stay alive until then.” I reasoned with myself.

Yesterday I had tried to keep the talking to a minimum but gave up last night while I was shaking from the anxiety. “And even if it is poisonous, maybe it will kill me quick.”

“So,” I sighed, staring at the contents of the fridge. “This is an ingredients household.” Cereal, I decided, letting the doors of the refrigerator fall closed.

Sitting alone in a cold, empty, silent house was too much. So I cautiously turned on the TV. I was apprehensive. What if it was just false hope the No Signal message would blink back at me? Or what if I turned it on and it ended up being live footage of me like in some horror movie? To my excitement, the TV turned on. Flipping through the channels, most of them were Korean. Some were in English, like some news channels. On instinct, I plopped down on the couch and watched, would I appear on the news? Someone has to have noticed that I was gone, right? Or at least, they would sometime soon, right? Eventually my stomach growled, so I left the news on and watched while I ate. A missing persons report never made an appearance.

After breakfast, I took another lap around the house to engrain every step into my brain. I never stopped looking for a way out, but every window was barred every time I looked. No matter what I threw at the back wall, it never shattered, not so much as a scratch. These activities continued until lunch rolled around. Then I explored the kitchen cupboards and found a recipe book, my recipes. Despite being fully weirded out again, I managed to make something small.

Afterwards, I explored the books in the library more, crossing my fingers I’d find a false book with a key in it like in a TV show. That never happened. For dinner, I cooked something more complex, anything to spend my time on that could distract me from this eerie house. Ending the day with a long shower to wash off the distress. To close out my day I stole a notebook from the library and kept it like a diary, to record everything I could. When I got out of this place, I could show it to the public. Or maybe... If I died here someone could find it one day.

I carried on with this routine for several days. Eventually, after scouring through the library for hours, I found a single CD in a clear case in the desk. There was nothing written on it, but who keeps a single blank CD around, it has to have something on it. I hurried to play it on the living room TV. Somewhere along the line, I had become comfortable treating the house like my own.

While this Changkyun definitely didn’t deserve to be respected, for so long I was scared to so much as disturb the carpet. However, currently I was starting to treat things as if they were mine. Was I becoming too comfortable? I was alone after all and haven’t run into any threats in the house.

I stuck the CD into the player and loaded it. It was music. Music. I haven’t heard music outside of a TV commercial in days. In short, I was ecstatic. I’d never heard any of the songs before, but the singer was a man with a deep and soothing voice. I wasn’t at the point to let my guard down yet, but having music to listen to undeniably calmed my nerves. There were only a handful of songs on the CD and most of them were Korean; I played them on loop all day.

Today was day nine.

The routine I fell into became easy and I was glad to have some sort of structure. Although, I began to re-entertain the idea of being left here to die. Would Changkyun ever actually come? Or was the note just a ploy, a fake hint. Maybe I was doomed to live here until the food ran out and I simply disappeared. I tried not to entertain these ideas letting the music play in the background and drown out my thoughts, relax my nerves. Surprisingly the music grew on me, maybe when I ran away from here, I could take it with me? Now it was time to prepare lunch. I took a sip from a cup of hot tea and got to work.

Then I heard it. The unmistakable sound of a door opening.

My whole body tensed; I couldn’t move. What can I use? I placed the cup of tea on the hot stove, maybe I could burn him, and grabbed a knife. I couldn’t breathe, I’d tried to prepare myself for this, but now that the time has finally come, I just wanted to hide.

It was hard to hear footsteps over the music, but I did hear a voice calling out my name. “I’m home! Come out and greet me!”

No. His voice sounded familiar. Unmistakably, his was the voice on the CD. For a week, I’d been listening to and becoming accustomed to–no, begun to enjoy–Changkyun’s voice. Naturally, he followed the sound of the music and waltzed happily into the kitchen. Oh no. I know I shouldn’t think like this, but Changkyun is really attractive.

1. introduction
