Dragon isn’t sure what to make of his life currently, every meal time he is on the sunny, bow to Elbow with his sons crew. Sabo seems to be operating the revs out of his spare bedroom and now red hair shanks is handing him a bottle of what he assumes is hard liquor.

It’s been a long week

That’s mostly the reason he takes the bottle and without much thought puts his lips to the rim and swallows several long pulls.

Shanks looks delighted.

Makino less so.

The tiny bartender gives a Dragon a wap with her broom. “Dragon, you aren’t supposed to be mixing alcohol with your medications. You know that.”

Dragon tried and failed to look repentant

This didn’t even make the top three of the worst things he had done to his body

“Leave him be makino.” Shank laughs. “If a man wishes to spend the last of his time enjoying life’s pleasures then we should let him.”

“You consider this one of life’s pleasures?” Dragon scoffs, his voice echoing around the small bar.

Shanks takes his scorn as an invitation and slides into the stool beside him. He leans in his hair gleaming with the telltale sign of a sailor who’s gonna perhaps a tad too long without a bath. “You don’t?”

His voice is low smooth, like a wooden flute of a snake charmer.

Dragon takes another drink. “No.”

He content to let the conversation die there but Shanks hasn’t received the message.

“So what would you consider life’s pleasures.”

He’s even closer and Dragon has no idea why shanks wants his attention so bad.

He may not mind it as much if the man didn’t smell like stale air and salt brine.

“Love, companionship,” a pause. “Regular bathing.”

“Are you trying to tell me I smell?”

Dragon looks the redhead dead in the eyes. “Yes.”

Shanks throws back his head in laughter. “Alright alright I can take a hint.”

What hint, I told you directly you smell. Thought Dragon a tad concerned for shanks mental performance.

But the redheads attention is no longer on him, instead he seems more focused on fixing a room for himself to stay at.

Dragon leaves the bar (taking the bottle of what seems to be moonshine judging by the burn) with him.

He also makes some vague promise to see Shanks at dinner on the Sunny.

He finds himself making a path down to the beach, not for the death thing, he just wants to see the sunset.

He’s suicidal not stupid enough to kill himself while his sons are here.

He plops down on a piece of softer looking driftwood, and looks out at the water.

After a few minutes and a few more sips, he pulls out the folded photo from his breast pocket.

The photo isn’t that old realistically but looking at it he feels ancient. The picture is stained by time. By the slow crawl of weeks stretching into years merging into decades that now mark lines on Dragons face.

It was a beautiful photo once, Dragon thinks it still is in a way.

Two youthful faces peer out at him full of hope and joy. One is his own, though seemingly unrecognizable to even him at this point. The other..

He sighs and fold the photo with care back into his breast pocket.

“Dad?”

Sabo was coming towards him, his face concerningly calm and neutral.

Dragon could already tell where this conversation was heading and raised a hand. “Not tryin to kill myself.” He grunted, right now at least he mentally added.

But the look on his adoptive kids face said that if dragon so much as whispered that sort of thing. There would be hell to pay.

As much as Dragon loved his kid he worried for how Sabo acted when it came to the sort of thing. He didn’t seem to understand. Not that Dragon would ever want him to experience this.

But Sabo seemed to operate on the notion that he had to whatever it be.

Getting up, eating, running missions. Sabo did not have a choice, even on days where his eyes were blank.

Who was he kidding, Sabo knew exactly what Dragon was going through because, Dragon had done the exact same thing for years.

The only difference is Dragon couldn’t do it anymore.

“Iva needs you to hold out till April.” Sabo states.

Dragon is nonplussed “April?“

“They can’t visit sooner.”

Well then he was sticking round till April, he owed his oldest and dearest friend that much. But Dragon couldn’t help but wonder why it would take several months.

dvd ask meme; nobody is asking about impel downer so clearly i have to. i think i’ve read this fic in it’s entirely three times so i’d wanna interrogate you about every chapter, but I’ll pick ch8 times up. there’s a lot i like in here, sybil and akainu’s “fight”, sybil’s last prophecy to akainu as they think they’re about to die (is it a prophecy, a threat, a hope, or. last fuck you, all of the above), canonizing oars death in a heartbreaking way that fits into your plot, more hints at sybil’s backstory (which i’m always dying over will we learn more) in her conversation with shanks and the doctor and their awkard silence reaction to just casual mention of how excessively fucked over sybil has been by the world government

ch8 of impel downer, Time's Up! what a throwback. i loved writing this chapter. now let's see what i remember of something i wrote (checks date) over two years ago lol.

one of my favorite things of shifting between povs in this chapter is that nobody is happy. not garp, not shanks, nobody. not a single person in this war except for blackbeard gained more than they lost.

shanks negotiations. the thing is, he doesn't want to fight. he's not actually interested in swinging the balance of the world any further, but he's also not willing to back down-- he wont let them have whitebeard's body. he won't abandon sybil to marine custody just because it would be "easier".

garp is actually helping him with the offer. but who knows if he'd actually go along with it if sybil hadnt broken their time clock while the arguement was still ongoing.

sybil and akainu. sybil has the strength of a properly made paramecia-- if you make the right circumstances, they can hit way above their level. but there's no way for them to actually hurt him, lol. sybil doesn't really have offensive skills. well, they could probably develop them, but they don't have them. so its a cat and mouse game where the most important things are this

they want to live

akainu wants them to die; its unthinkable to let someone ruin a marine admirals rep like that and live. the problem isn't that they didn't get clobbered but that they did in a way that made him look really bad and ineffective. Lol

sybil's got a lot of stuff their unsure of. a lot of memory problems. inconsistent recall. so maybe they don't know for sure, /memory wise/, that that will happen. but because they believe that they live in a world where Monkey D Luffy will become Pirate King, it's a prophecy. they say it and they believe it.

you know, i write a lot of tragedies, but i don't actually write a lot of death scenes. im the type of person who kills people off screen and then writes reactions. so, this one...

i hate when i kill off a character and its less impactful than the original canon. so i thought, this has to be at least as sad as when Oars died in marineford, and that scene was AWFUL.

but i was genuinely sad, you know. i saw the pieces come together, realized how sybil was going to get out, and i, the author, had to realize that oars wasn't going to live. even though i'd half thought he might. thats what happens when you put the puzzle together and then realize what it shows.

you can't save someone like ace and not lose /anything/. and not lose almost everything. you just have to think its worth it.

so, sybil's backstory. this is the first time they even lay most of it out-- we've met them at the start of their adventures in the grand line, but theyve been having a rough decade or so

a watchmaker in west blue, a bad, unlucky run in with a celestial dragon, a failure to pay the Heavenly Tribute dominoed off the original bad run in, a stay in Impel Down dominoed off that. and then, the part they've failed to explain after that of how a civilian who should have been floor 1 had ended up at floor 5.5. the circumstances around their devil fruit. a lot of stuff..

Smoker sighed. He was asked -and told- the same thing every single time. Smoker waved her off.

"Stand down Tashigi. Portgas acts like any other old reckless youngster, there is no need to get rash." Sergeant Smoker seriously needed a break. He already gained a headache trying to apprehend Portgas. He didn't need this extra addition. But, it seems Tashigi didn't get the memo.

"But sir! Portgas D. Ace is the eldest of the infamous ASL brothers! Those three terrorize any store they find! And just for food?!?! He's also allies with Whitebeard and Roger! He needs to be apprehended immediately before his entire posse raid this whole town!" The woman screeched as she tried to get her point across.

"I said stand down cadet!" He barked. "I am aware of Portgas' affiliations, I am aware of his younger brothers, and I am very much aware of the consequences of him continuing to run free." It's like the people in this damned department didn't understand.

"Please stop rambling nonsense around my head and move on from this subject. To be quite frank, I'm done with Portgas and his case. So if you want to capture him so bad, why don't you go and do it?" Smoker sneered as he has gotten fed up with Tashigi and her screeching.

"But Sergeant Smoker-.." She tried to reason but never got to finish her sentence. Smoker upped and left the room.

"Damned people. I don't know how many times they want me to repeat the same words over and over again." He grumbled as he stomped his way to his office.

"That damn brat is growing on me. Without him, these calls won't be challenging at all."

He sighed, entering his office. Sitting down on the slightly worn out chair, he gazed upon his achievements that were mounted on the wall.

'Soon, I won't have a job if I keep this up.' He thought with a sigh. This whole situation was troublesome.

Suddenly, a knock was heard.

"Enter." The tired male spoke. He waited to see who would be on the other side of his door. Surprisingly, it was Monkey D. Garp, the retired chief of police. Smoker stood up, as a sign of respect.

"G-Garp-San," He hesitated. "To what do I owe this visit? More so, why have you came to visit me?" Smoker was puzzled. Why was the greatest chief of police that ever resided in this town, here in his office?

Garp stood as strong as ever. Dressed down in his white button up and some white dress pants.

"Well, Sergeant," Garp began. " a little birdy...more-so...your assistant Tashigi, seemed to be in distress. I asked her, and she told me that you keep letting a certain freckled faced fellow go." Smoker kept his composure, but inwardly groaned. That woman could never keep her mouth shut.

"Mind explaining why you are releasing my grandson only to capture him again later on?" Garp questioned as he looked at Smoker with curious amusement.

Smoker stayed silent. It wasn't that he didn't know how to answer the question, it was more of him in denial.

"To be honest with you Chief...I'm not sure why I do that." He said scratching the back of his neck. A sign that Garp picked up from past visits, indicating he was nervous.

"Portgas brings...life to the chases we do-" Smoker paused. "him and his brothers." He continues. "So taking them in would diminish all the fun." Garp stared at him for a minute before answering.

"But you do know that even if they do rob stores for food, they have very strong and dangerous allies." He stated. "Ace with Whitebeard and Roger, Sabo with Dragon, and Luffy with Shanks. Not to mention they have their own crews. For example, Luffy and his Straw hat brats." Garp concluded as fixed Smoker with a stare.

"Though I am assuming- and hoping that this isn't the case-" Garp straightens to his full height. "Could it be that you are starting to harbor feelings for the brat?" Garp asked.

The male in question thought about the elders statement. 'Do I like Portgas? No....no I can't do that. There's no way. Unless...?' Smoker thought as he racked through his brain for answers.

Garp sighed. "Well, I've got to go. Even though they are criminals, they're still my grandkids. However, they are gonna get a rude awakening when I return back home from the holidays." He said with a menacing smile as he cracked his knuckles. He looked at Smoker then smirked at him before exited out of his office.

'That was weird.' The white haired male said as he lit up a cigar. He sat down and took a puff. He sighed out a breath as he wondered.

'What am I going to do?'

(Ace's POV)

"LUFFY! ACE! LET'S GO!" Sabo shouted. We just raided one of our favorite restaurants. We dodged a couple of frying pans, cutting boards, and a few stray eating utensils along the way. We finally arrive to our usual little hiding spot. We're here just until things die down, then we normally make our way home. Fuck I'm tired. I focus on catching my breath as Luffy starts laughing.

"Shishishi~ I got all the meat!" My idiot of a little brother exclaims.

"Lies! I got some meat too- and I aint sharing so don't give me that face." I said as my straw hat wearing brother pouts.

"You idiots argue for the most simplest things," Sabo rolled his eyes. "it's unbelievable sometimes." He sighed as he looked down in embarrassment.

"WHO YOU CALLING AN IDIOT, BARBIE DOLL?!?" I snap.

"EH!? YOU WANNA FIGHT?!" Sabo shouts back. Oh ho hooo I am not backing down bitch.

"BRING IT ON YOU SMURF!"

Sabo and I were head to head and I could see the electricity between us. "Shishishi~ usually it's me and Ace or Ace and Smokey." Luffy said as he munched on a bag of chips.

"Speaking of Smokey, he always catches you and then lets you go 5 hours later. Wanna explain?" Sabo said as he looked at me with a smirk on his face. I felt my cheeks heat up as I look the other way.

"There's nothing to explain. He catches me, we talk, then he lets me go. Nothing else." I mumbled, hoping Sabo wouldn't press into the situation more.

"Judging by your face I think you have some attraction for him." Apparently, he didn't get the hint or he got it and just didn't care.

"Ugh just drop it Sabo. Even if I DID like him there is absolutely NO POSSIBLE WAY Oyaji or that old bastard would approve." I sulk.

Sabo walks up to me and grabs my shoulders. "Wouldn't approve of what? You being gay?"

"Hmm? Oh, No, I told them my preference before and they didn't have a problem. I think they wouldn't approve because of who I chose to like. Remember," I sigh. "He's a cop. I'm a thief. Not to mention my stupid old man. It isn't gonna work."

I turn away from him as my shoulders droop. 'Besides..I think he likes that little assistant of his...despite how annoying she is.' I thought as a I succumb to my inner thoughts.

"Eh, Ace, I know you're worried about their opinion, but, if you really like him, you gotta face your fears and tell him. Rejection is always better than regret." Luffy said with a serious expression.

Sabo and I looked at him shocked. He tilts his head in confusion. 'Luffy....has a brain?' I stare at him.

"What? Is there something on my face?" He picks his nose.

'Well nevermind he's back to being an idiot.' I sweatdrop.

"Well, we should get going. Thatch needs to cook the food." Sabo said and as soon as he did, Luffy and I race back to the house.

"Hey! Wait for me! Guys!" I hear Sabo shout.

"Why...did you guys..run of like that?" Sabo panted as he finally caught up with us.

"You've gotten slow Sabo..need to fix that." I say as I smirk mischievously at him. He pales at my sentence and begins to mumble something before Luffy's voice is heard, shouting so the whole block hears him. "WE'RE HOME!"

He then turns towards us, "Let's go, I want FOOODD!" and dashes inside.

Sabo and I stare at him for a second before his words fully register in my mind. "DON'T EAT ALL THE MEAT LUFFY!" I shout. I dash inside, leaving Sabo in the dust.

"Thatch! Marco! Oyaji! How are you guys?" I ask as we all sit at the table. Well Oyaji stood, but that doesn't make much of a difference.

"We're fine." Thatch hummed, "-but mind telling why you got captured today?" he questions as he glances behind him, amused.

"Oh, um...how'd you know about that?" I laugh nervously with an uneasy feeling in my chest.

"Gurararara~ We know everything around here, brat. Did you forget already?" Oyaji says, with his signature laugh.

I facepalm because of my stupidity. 'Of course Oyaji would know the smoking Sargeant.'

"Shishishi~ Ace got captured by Smokey! But their fight was..weird." Luffy's shine like literal stars as Thatch sets a plate full of meat in front of him. "Weird like how yoi?" Marco spoke, leaning on the table with a lazy smirk.

"They were saying weird stuff to each other. Like when Ace said that if Smokey has this much energy fighting, how much energy would he have in-" Luffy didn't get to finish before I shoved a piece of meat in his mouth. "OKAYY," I chuckle nervously, "we don't need to hear anymore a that, right Sabo?" I force a smile, praying that Sabo would be on my side.

Sabo looks at me before smirking. 'Oh no'

"I don't know, Ace...you were kinda..touchy with him today." He teased. "Any reason why?" I look at him with the most hateful gaze ever, but he just brushes it off. 'Damnit Sabo! You're gonna make Oyaji kill him you overgrown barbie doll!'

Everyone at the table looked at me with a face of interest. Even Izo, Vista and Haruta.

'When the hell did they get here?'

The only one who didn't had a readable expression was Oyaji. 'Fuck...he's gonna kill me'

"Were you flirting- with Sergeant Smoker, Ace?" Izo questioned me with a large smirk on his rose colored lips. Before I even had the chance to answer, the overgrown, knock-off barbie doll on the right of me spoke up.

"Flirting? It was like watching sex happen in front of my eyes-" He didn't get to finish as I slammed my fist on top of his head.

"Damnit Sabo! Are you trying to get me killed?!" I yelled as I stood up from my seat, meat on my plate forgotten.

"I mean you needed a push and I'm there to help." He winced as he rubbed the top of his head. Before I said anything, I was cut of again.

'Why the fuck do I keep getting interrupted!? I'm running out of patience.'

"Ace.." Oyaji started as he looked at me with a glare, some haki leaking through. "Are you interested in this...Sergeant?" He finished. The whole table went down in silence and Sabo looks away from me, I don't have to look at him to know he feels full of guilt.

"No Oyaji.....what gave you that idea?" I say, not looking at Oyaji in the eye.

"Ace..you know that relationship will not work. He's a Sergeant, a cop," He emphasizes. "...and you. You're a thief." He says firmly, staring into my being.

"Your relationship is gonna end up in two ways. One, he continues to set you free after every chase and loses his rank- or worse, his job-"

'I don't want to be the reason he loses his job.' I clench my fist.

"Or two, you get caught and thrown in jail." Oyaji speaks. I know what he's saying. I know what he's trying to get into my head.

"Either he's gone or your life is over."

'I know the risks....I know I don't have a chance. But why does it hurt so much hearing it from you, Oyaji?'

I thought as I bit my bottom lip.

"Honestly," He grunts. "I don't care who you date. Your father, however, is the problem." I tch. That stupid old man.

"You know he has issues trusting the police. Ever since the incident with your mother." He continued. "Of course she's alive and well, but he almost lost her, Ace. He almost lost you.

I put my head down in shame.

'I knew it. They wouldn't approve. They wouldn't accept it. Damn it.'

"I know that Oyaji..that's why I said I don't like him you know." I bark a laugh. It sounded so mechanic that Luffy had stopped eating.

"...Sabo and Luffy were just messing with me." I say flashing a pained smile, a vain attempt to seem unfazed.

"Ace.." Thatch calls. I don't answer.

"Well, that settles that. I'm going to be in my room. I'm not hungry." I slide the plate over in between Sabo and Luffy, signaling that they can have my share.

I walk out of the dining room and head to my room. 'Nothing is ever fair anymore.'

I open the door to my room and slam it closed, locking it behind me. I huff. For fuck's sake.

'I need to cool down...I don't need another lecture from Marco about burning holes into my bedroom walls again.'

Shuffling around in my room, trying to calm down- though I'm unsuccessful-, something clicks.

What if....?

I rush and throw on a shirt. I don't bother to button it up cause why not. Opening my window and climbing out, I breathe in slight anticipation.

'Maybe he's on duty tonight...'

(Sabo's POV)

I watch Ace leave the dining room with a hurt look in his eyes. 'I over did it.' I can't help but think. Pops sighs before he took a sip of his sake.

"I know the brat likes that Sergeant and frankly, I would like to see them together, but Roger wouldn't allow it."

Ah, speaking of the devil. Said man enters the house with Aunt Rouge and Uncle Rayleigh following behind him.

'Just how many people live here?' I sweatdropped.

"Ahaaa Newgate! Pass over the sake you old geezer!" Roger exclaimed, dismissing the tense atmosphere in the room. 'He either doesn't notice it, or he notices and doesn't care. Probably the latter.'

"Gurararara~ Go get your own, this one's mine." Pops said as he hogged up the rest of the sake on the table.

"Aww cmon, you drinked the rest of the booze ya old bastard." Roger complained as he took a seat next to Pops.

"For an old man he really asks like a kid yoi." Marco mumbles. "Tell me about it, and I'm married to him." Aunt Rouge added as she put two fingers on the bridge of her nose.

"Oiii!" Roger exclaimed with a pout. 'He really is a man baby'

"Roger.. Rouge.. there is something we need to...discuss." Pops says as his smile drops.

Sensing the tension in the room, Roger stopped smiling and gave a blank stare. "About what Newgate?" He questioned. "It's about Ace." Pops said.

As if the room dropped below freezing point, Roger gave Pops a ice cold stare as his haki started to leak out.

"What happened to my son?" He asked as he stood up. Marco and Thatch stood next to Pops just in case something happens.

'Now I see why Ace doesn't tell you things, Roger. You're overprotective.' I thought as I made my way over to Luffy.

"Nothing happened to him Roger..." Oyaji paused. "He's just.....experiencing feelings for someone, is all." Pops concluded.

Roger visibly relaxed and smiled "Then what's the problem? You got me all tense for nothing!" He exclaimed as he laugh, but Pops only chuckled. "Ah but wait, he's interested in an officer. Down at the GPD, there's a smokey Sergeant that's caught Ace's attention." Pops said

Roger's smile disappeared and was replaced with an angry scowl almost immediately.

"Absolutely not. There's NO WAY I'm letting my only son date an officer. After what they did to us?! No way." He said as he threw his hands up. Roger only looked away in anger and slight disbelief.

"If I may ask...what happened exactly yoi?" Marco questioned. Though, this is the first time I've seen Marco flinch when someone answered his questions.

'Now I reallyyyy understand why Ace don't tell him anything.'

"When Rouge was pregnant with Ace, I was on the run from the government. I was caught and my execution was planned, but they didn't go through with it." He started. "Because it was unsafe, Rouge was forced to hold Ace for 20 months. Thus causing his birth to be heavily delayed. When it was time for Rouge to give birth, I broke out of the prison they kept me in."

As Roger talked, I could feel the raw hatred, and bits of Haki begin to pour out into the room. ~To be continued~

I don’t know why I’m writing this. It’s weird as hell. Lots of this shit can’t even go into words right, so lots of it won’t. But I’m gonna put all this down, just so some other fucker can go insane trying to figure all this out.

So, first thing’s first; dragons, those fantasy Lord of the Rings things, with the giant wings and fire bellies or throats or magic or whatever, those aren’t real. You follow?

But I don’t know what you wanna call Shouto, some mutant-lizard with bat wings and weird leathery skin where you’d want scales and scales where you’d want weird leathery skin and the ability to turn human - you can call him whatever. I’m gonna call him a dragon, because what else am I gonna call him? You see him flying, your basic monkey brain goes flight-or-flight, “Oh shit, I’m gonna die, that thing is huge and dangerous.” and then your smartass I-think-therefore-I-am center goes, “Dragon.” You probably understood when you heard about him from your buddies or whatever. (At least, I think people talk about him. He doesn’t make people faint when he shows up now, so, y’know, I assume a lot of people already know about him now.) You probably went along with the brainless crowd and call him a dragon, even though common sense and science and having half a brain means that you shouldn’t. Rhinos aren’t unicorns. So why the hell should you call Shouto a dragon? (Aside from the fact that Shouto, y’know, actually looks like a dragon, and isn’t come weird medieval Telephone-d version of it. Point is, just because he looks like a mythical creature, that doesn’t mean he is.)

So Shouto’s not a dragon, but he sure as hell looks like it. And, y’know, he breathes fire. And if that isn’t enough of a mind fuck, he breathes ice, too. You still with me here? And he has friends. Shit like this is a lot easier to get away with since the world fell apart.

So uh, yeah. This is how I met him. Fucking Deku said that if I don’t write it, he will, and he wasn’t even here for half of it. If it’s gonna be done, it’s gonna be done right. So I’m gonna do it. Duh.

Uh, fuck, where do I start? It didn’t just start with that dumbass trip into the forest, it fucking went downhill from there. Shouto wasn’t the beginning. So, uh, I’ll just start from the top.

So, y’know, the world’s a dystopia now. All that shit those philosophers and scientists yammered on about for centuries, the end of the world, the blink-and-whoops-the-world’s-resources-are-gone worrywart scientists, the naturalist wackjobs, the bootlickers who said that if the government fucked off the Purge would start,the tinfoil Bear Grylls’ of the world? Yeah, long story short, for reasons I don’t give a shit about, that happened.

And if you’re reading from some luxury utopia, sitting in some comfy soft plastic chair in your city that stays warm inside and keeps the cold outside like with some weird future science, you’re probably like, “wait, what happened?” and to that I say, fuck you, you’re the one reading this, so listen when I say that I’m not gonna tell you. No one knows all the way, anyway. There’s no real 24-hour news like when my mom was younger. It just happened.

It’s not all that hard, luxury-utopia citizen. You live in some world that has crime as some, like distant memory, right? You don’t make every move with the expectation that someone’ll kill you if you move the wrong way? You don’t worry about the werid-ass boundary five inches from your front door, where the world changes from “okay” to “wait back up you’re EXPOSED” once you cross it? You’re living pretty good.

I live in a community, which is really lucky. A lot of the old fucks like my mom call it a tribe, like a joke. It’s, like, ten houses on a dead-end street they blocked off, with a forest on one end and the Wall on the other. I’ve read books. It’s shit.

The forest is live and huntable and scavengeable. And occasionally houses machete-wielding fuckos. Me and the boys went out in it anyway, because why the fuck not? We were born in this world. Machete-wielding fuckos can fuck right off. Got my first kill at seven, but I don’t usually count it because the guy was probably drunk. Where he got alcohol nowadays, I dunno.

Anyway. This is where Deku starts. That annoying bitch you can hear for miles when he so much as sneezes. Yeah. We were born and raised in that community, and he’s never stopped pestering me for a single day. What it’s about doesn’t matter - he’s so uppity about everything that anything he says rubs me the wrong way. He says he isn’t, but you can fucking tell, if you have a crumb of intelligence. He thinks he’s the shit, that the world revolves around him. Well, fuck off with that shit. Fuck right off with that.

The forest was huge. Probably went on for forever, into the mountains. Surrounded some kind of bamboo glade in the middle. All kinds of wild shit. The adults stuck to the hunting and general-providing-for-the-community and the kids fucked around and flirted with death like we were best mates. It was pretty easy, right out the womb, popped fresh from the void, like “oh, yeah I just came from you, but I’ve already lived this long, you’re gonna try to take me back now?” all coy like that. Kids are dumbasses.

Hunting is whatever. We get bows, mostly, because guns are hard to find and maintain and we got, like, fifty bullets in a semiautomatic for real emergency situations, and that’s it. So we go back to the stone age, we get bows, blades. One family has a family heirloom katana they use to slice off animal heads and divvy up meat and organ sections. Adaptability, that’s survival.

Bamboo, that’s Japan’s rock-solid foundation. Bamboo and wood. We make everything from that shit. Everything. I’m sick of it, honestly, but what else can you make into a bowl, floor panels, chopsticks, paperweights, shoes, baskets, etc? Nothing as accessible, that’s what. You bring up anything else, I’ll call bullshit. Makes a rad bokken, too. Deku carves the shit out of his until he’s got more fancy swirls than actual wood to swing with. Idiot.

3. if you could be one fictional character for a day, who would it be and why? Oh my god, that’s such a hard question ashdksglgf.. I think I’d want to be  Yaoyorozu Momo (from BnHA) for a day because her quirk is just hella cool and I wanna make lots of cool things with it and all lol

I have the most songs in my library from Die Ärzte (a German band), but I doubt they’re the most popular. And of course, the hate some (of my favourite) Haikyuu!! ships are getting is making me super angry too, but I’m pretty used to it by now unfortunately. It’s just as fucking awkward as dragon feared

Robin is the first to greet him, “you are skinny without the cloak.” She smiles “sanji will fix that.”

Dragon can’t help but let out a snort. If god knows how many years of what essentially boiled down to food therapy. He had doubts that a pirate chef could make him less underweight than he was.

The rest of the crew stand in an obvious guarded circle. Luffy slowly steps into view.

His curly hair is longer now, an errant braid or two stick out. He stands taller and his face is serious. He looks like..

“Did grandpa also throw you into the jungle with tigers?”

Yup he’s definitely dragons alright.

“From the minute I could walk.”

Luffy cocks his head those wide eyes catching the weak sun, there’s a red tinge to his eyes now that dragon suspects is nikas influence.

But there’s also amber flecks.

“I’m the pirate King.”

“Good.” Dragon says a little hoarsely.

Luffy cocks his head to the other side now, he’s examining a bug. “Do you want a tour of my ship.”

Dragon thinks his lips twitch into some approximation of a smile. “Sure.”

It’s still awkward. The crew mill in the background as luffy leads dragon around. Sharp eyes cautious, ready to take their captain back if needed.

Luffy talks most of the time, and Dragon listens soaking in the stories he heard third and fourth hand or god forbid through Morgan’s

His son shines so brightly, he almost needs to squint.

“Oh and I want you to meet shanks!”

The noise that emerges from dragons throat surprises even him.

Luffy stops and turns his eyes big with questions or maybe concern.

Dragon clears his throat perhaps a little too hard and winces, “I uh, I used to babysit shanks when he was little.” He says rather lamely.

“Woah, that’s so cool! Does that mean you can marry shanks?”

“What?!” Dragons voice came out in an octave he thought was no longer physically possible for him to reach. “I- I don’t- he’s kinda young? Isn’t he?

His son hummed eyes looking inconspicuously off into the distance. “I suppose.. are you really bothered by something like that?”

Am I? Thought Dragon who couldn’t say one way or the other without being a massive hypocrite. The last time he’d seen shanks he’d been a pimply preteen.

“I- guess I wouldn’t marry someone unless I knew them very well.” He settles on.

“Like if you were in an alliance?” Asks Luffy.

“Sure?” He still has no idea what his son seems to be skirting around but that seems to be the right thing to say.

Luffy breaks out a huge smile and Dragon feels a tentative push to smile back.

Dinner time is where things go to shit, Dragon stares at the mountains of food and feels the anxiety crawling up into his throat.

The smell of chicken is making his stomach churn.

“Is everything ok?”

Of fucking course it’s his son who asks and Dragon would lie, he would. But he can’t because the last time he did he nearly chocked on his own vomit and every single person is staring at him..

“I can’t eat this.”

You could hear a pin drop.

Dragon can hear the sound of a sword being popped from its sheath.

“Oh Dragon san forgive me.” Robins voice breaks through, cleaning, sprouting, washing away tension. “I had forgotten that you had dietary restrictions.”

“Restrictions?” The chef with the swirling brow, stared Dragon down with the same intensity a wolf would a sheep. “What are they?”

“Dragon san suffered trauma to his trachea many years ago” , Robin interjected smoothly. “He struggles with completely solid foods, and developed aversions to others during his recovery.”

The chef, sanji. Dragon reminded himself looked back and forth between him and Robin.

“Lemme guess.” He drawled, his mouth quirking. “Chicken noodle soup.”

Dragon couldn’t stop himself from making a face and Sanji gave a low chuckle.

“You got anything against northern spices?” He asked and Dragon shook his head.

“Alright, gimme 10 and I’ll whip up something palatable for you.” Sanji called as he bustled back into the kitchen.

Luffy took Dragons hand, “don’t worry, Sanjis cooking is the best!”

Dragon could only nod as his son led him to a seat by jinbei and Robin. A small blessing or maybe planned.. which ever Drgaon was just glad he wasn’t sitting by the cat burglar. 

He wasn’t sure if he wanted her to nab what he had in his pockets. Even if he was gonna die, there were things he wished to keep with him till the end.

“Mr dragon sir,” came the squeaky, cracking voice.

The tiny reindeer who was the doctor was looking at him in awe and curiosity. “Could I take a look at your throat after dinner? I am curious to see how the muscles healed.”

Dragon hesitated. “Can you do it without touching?”

There was an all to knowing look in the youngsters eyes as he nodded.

“Ok.” Dragon exhaled.

Sanji chose that moment to bring him a bowl of northern bean stew alongside a small pot of melted cheese with bits of meat and vegetables to dip.

Dragon very mindfully did not moan with his first bite.

If he had he might have to take himself overboard before dessert.

He got about half way through the soup and a quarter through the cheese before his stomach couldn’t handle anymore.

“It was a side effect.” He tells sanji when he catches the inquisitive look. “My stomach shrank during recovery, I just can’t handle as much food.”

The chef smiles politely but Dragon can see the gears turning in his head.

After the dinner Dragon goes to the infirmary with the little doctor.

He patiently tilts his neck this way and that, swallowing, talking a coughing after pushing a tad too far.

Chopper scribbles on his clipboard. “Do you take any medication?” He asks.

“Shit ton of Zoloft, concerta or vyvanse when I can get my hands on it, adderall when I can’t.”

“I see.” More scribbling “and how do you feel taking all of those medications?”

“I feel like I would’ve killed myself before Luffy turned 4 if I didn’t.”

He has to give it to the young doctors level of professionalism, because there’s only a skip of unwanted movement before the pen is smoothly rolling again.

Dragon makes the decision one night, if he is still alive at the end. He will take a midnight swim.

He wants a peaceful end.

The end comes, Dragon survives (ofc he does, it’s fucking awful) he loses all sight in one eye and has nerve damage through his left arm.

It takes time because he can’t just leave, it’s several months before he can slip away back to foosha. Leaving those who still had a spark in charge.

Sabo doesn’t stop him and Dragon tries to articulate a way of “I’d let you kill me” that doesn’t sound so morbid and instead like the trust he has in his not son.

He never comes up with anything and Sabo doesn’t bother to stay long enough for the fumbling words he does have.

Foosha is the same yet not, he steps through it like a child in an adults body.

There’s a cabin of sorts on the far far side, tucked away from everything and everyone. Dragon thinks it was for hunting at one point but it’s now abandoned.

The water calls in gentle waves, but he can’t step into just yet.

He has a letter to write and a cabin to restore.

‘Dear luffy,

I know you do not know me and that’s ok, I cannot expect you to remember things from when you were the size of my hand.

I don’t know if you have questions, but I will try to answer each I can think of.

I am not going to be here once you get this letter, but I haven’t been in you life since you were 2 so I believe you will be just fine without me.

I leave you two things, this cabin, a place to call home if you ever want it and a book filled with every memory and story of you, of me, mostly of my regrets I suppose.

Dragon

He sends the letter, and continues work on the house.

The cabin doesn’t take him nearly as long as he thought. The book however takes considerably longer.

A couple of dogeared photos, a scrap of blanket. Page upon page littered with tiny edits and notes in the margins.

He deliberates for long time on one photo in particular, before tucking it back into his chest pocket.

Perhaps some things are better left unsaid.

It’s late fall when he finally closes the book. Not completely satisfied but content enough with the results.

Of course that’s when the side of his house blows up

Dragon blinks slowly, haki flickering to life as a shadowy figure picks its way inside.

He blames the shock and anger on his next words

“Sabo what the fuck.”

“Me what the fuck!” Screams the boy “how about You WAHT THE FUCK?”

Dragon stares at the blonde then back at the smouldering cavernous opening of his current home.

“I’m not drilling through ice for death.” He says out loud (mainly because he had gotten way too used to talking to himself.)

Sabo is on him like a dog on a bone, shaking his shoulders and yelling. “WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU THINKING?”

Dragon sighs god this was exhausting, he really should’ve gotten dead before people would show.

“Sabo, I did what I set out to do. There’s nothing more for me.”

He wasn’t sure what he was expecting a punch to the face, more yelling, tears.

Not sabo throwing his arms around him like he did when he was small and had nightmares.

It took Dragon a moment to respond and hug back.

“you have me.” Sabo sniffed, his voice cracking “and koala and Iva and hack and everyone at base and and”

He swallowed hard “and you have luffy.”

Dragon stilled “what?”

“He wants to meet you.”

“Why.”

“Fucking hell, because you sent him a letter that basically said. Hey I’m gonna kill myself.”

Dragon paused, pacing through his words. “I don’t think I ever used the words suicide.”

“Luffy isn’t an idiot.” Sabo pulled back and made a face “well he is but not about this.”

“What could I give him by being here?” Dragon asked more to himself, his hands were shaking. “I don’t- I’m not.”

“D- dad.” Two hands one scarred one not came to rest over his own. “I think whatever you could tell him, he’d like to hear from you.”

It took awhile for the older man to collect himself. “I’ll stay for luffys visit, but.”

Sabos face fell.

“I can’t- I won’t promise anything after that.”

“Dad-“

“Sabo” Dragon cut him off gently. “Sabo have been fighting this for a long long time and I am tired. I am so tired.”

“But-“

“I have made up my mind, I’ll stay till spring. But after I want to die.”

Dragon could feel his shirt dampening as sabo cried and clung to him. And dragon clung back though he had no tears to give. He tried to express the love and pride he had in Sabo, he most likely failed but who cares, it wouldn’t matter come spring.

Monkey D Dragon and the auDHD/depression/vocal cord paralysis induced curse of “I need to eat, but I don’t want to”.

Oh it’s the worst, the only effective method they have found is if Sabo or one of the younger members asks him if he can make some food

Then he’ll wander into the kitchen and make something and end up joining in the eating out of habit.

At his worst kuma had to hold him down while Iva shoved a tube down his throat (it only happened a couple times but still those weren’t good times)

Dragon had been brought kicking and screaming back from near death multiple times and it is the biggest tragedy that it doesn’t bother him whatsoever
